This is a beautiful English city that’s rich in history, and with its medieval city walls, museums, shops, and a renowned racecourse, it’s no wonder that visitors flock to York. Things to do and see are in abundant supply, and York tourist attractions are plentiful.

By day, you can visit the majestic York Minster or stroll along the River Ouse (or take the sightseeing bus if you prefer). By night, dine out in one of the many restaurants, and enjoy a tipple at one of the traditional pubs that line the streets.

Things to do in York

Fancy a stroll along the longest walls in England? York is famed for its 13 th century City Walls (also known as the Bar Walls and Roman Walls). Originally built by the Romans to defend the city, York City Walls are now an attraction in their own right.

If you want to walk the whole way around, you’re looking at a two-hour stroll – if that seems too long-winded, you can just walk part of it. The walls are elevated, so you get to take in pleasant views over the city and discover the main characteristics of the stone fortifications at the same time.

Of all the places of interest in York, Clifford’s Tower has to be high on the list. An imposing structure, commanding eye-catching views of the city beyond, Clifford’s Tower is the largest remaining portion of York Castle.

In the past, the tower served as a Royal Mint and also as a prison, playing host to a number of criminals. There’s some debate as to how the tower obtained its name – some believe the Clifford family laid claim to the structure, giving it their name.

Others deem that the tower adopted the name to mark the hanging of Roger de Clifford (hanged in 1322 for his opposition of Edward II). Whichever story you believe, Clifford’s Tower is certainly worth a look.

An edifice celebrating the reign of England’s kings, the tower is an important historical monument, and it also provides extensive panoramic vistas of York.

There are plenty of places to go in York, but there’s something magical about the Shambles. Nooks and crannies, alcoves and secret alleyways, the winding, narrow Shambles used to be home to neighbouring butcher’s shops.

Nowadays, the 14 th -century timber buildings play host to cheerful cafes and upmarket boutiques. There’s a buzzing atmosphere here – look out for the market at the end of the street, and keep an eye out for the talented street performers.

If you are a Harry Potter fan don’t miss ‘The Shop That Must Not Be Named” along the Shambles. Broomsticks can be parked outside if necessary!

As far as buildings go, York Minster is nothing short of magnificent. Dating back to 627 AD and a spectacular example of gothic architecture, the cathedral has an imposing presence.

History oozes from its very pores, and the medieval stained-glass windows, including the Great East Window, catch your imagination as well as the light.  The on-site Undercroft Museum provides a glimpse into the history beneath the cathedral, and there are guides on hand providing free tours of York Minster.

• Open daily for services and prayer (7:00 to 18:30). For sightseeing, opening hours are Monday – Saturday 9:00 to 17:30, and Sunday from 12:45. Occasionally, parts of the cathedral are closed in preparation for evensong or special events during general opening hours.

Infamous invaders Ivar the Boneless, King Halfdon and their Viking throng laid siege to York in 866 AD. You can discover the story behind the invasion at the Jorvik Viking Museum.

It’s no surprise to learn that a visit to the museum is considered one of top things to do in York. You can expect a fully immersive experience – climb into a carriage and prepare to be transported through 10 th century York.

The journey provides a glimpse into Jorvik of old, the sights, the sounds, and even the smells! You will also get to take a close-up look at genuine Viking relics, which were all discovered in the vicinity of the museum.

The York Castle Museum is another museum in York worth visiting.

There are lots of fun things to do in York, one being a visit to the York Chocolate Story. Here you can and find out more about iconic chocolate brands synonymous with the city – Rowntree’s, Terry’s and Craven’s.

Learn more about how chocolate is made and how to savour it like a pro. Marvel at the skills of the expert chocolatiers and indulge in a few tasty treats on the tour.

Days out in York are fun, but they can be costly – here we have a treat that costs nothing at all!

The National Railway Museum is a great day out for the family, and history buffs and train enthusiasts will be particularly at home here.

Browse the notable collection of rolling train stock and marvel at the locomotive and railway exhibits on show. There are picnic areas on-site too, so you can take the weight off your feet and enjoy a leisurely lunch.

Boat Rides Along the River

The River Ouse flows through the city of York. In the past, it provided passage to Viking invaders and helped bring the Black Death. Thankfully, nowadays, the river offers leisure opportunities instead of danger!

If you prefer to stay on dry land, you can stroll along the bank, look at the striking scenery and join in the York River Festival. Take to the water and you can participate in a spot of canoeing, rowing, fishing and boating. Hire your own boat or climb aboard a cruiser and enjoy a cruise.

Hire one of the fourteen red motorboats from York Self-Drive Boat Hire , and you can try your hand at being a skipper.

You can hire a boat (choose from Josephine, Angie, Leonie, Sarah, Yvette, Kathryn, Alice-May, Lucy, Tina, Heather, Ellen, Rebecca, Emma or Penny) for 30 minutes or a full hour, depending on how much messing about you want to do on the river!

30-minute self-drive (up to eight people) costs between £20 and £40.

One-hour self-drive (up to eight people) costs between £30 and £50.

City Cruises offers a number of sightseeing tours. Choose a daytime trip which includes lunch and allows you to escape the hubbub of the city.

Grab your camera and sail along the River Ouse, snapping pics of historic buildings, bridges and striking views as you go (keep your eyes open for the Kingfishers as they flitter by). The cruise lasts around an hour.

Alternatively, there’s an evening sightseeing cruise . This one-hour trip takes in the sights and sounds of the city. You’ll hear all sorts of interesting stories about York (and its colourful history).

• Daytime cruises: May to November – four departures a day from each standing: 10:30 until at least 15:00 (King’s Staith Landing) and 10:40 until at least 15:10 (Lendal Bridge Landing).
• Evening Cruises: May to September – sailing at 19:30 and 26 th September – 20th November – sailing at 18:00.

City Cruises also offer an afternoon tea cruise , lunch cruise (two-course meal included), evening dinne r cruise , and party cruises complete with disco and buffet.

Plan your visit to York – FAQs for visiting York

York is a UK travel destination that can be visited all year round. There are lots of things to do in York even if it is raining as many of York’s attractions are indoors.

The York Christmas festival is a great time to visit with a Christmas market and festive decorations throughout the city.

York can be visited in a day so is the perfect stop off if you are travelling to Edinburgh from London by train. (One of our top 10 rail journeys to take in Britain )

If you have time I would recommend a couple of days in York – it is the perfect weekend break destination. York is also a great base if you plan to take day trips to popular Yorkshire destinations such as Saltaire, Fountains Abbey, and Studley Royal or Whitby.

York is a walkable city with many of the main attractions of the city in close proximity.

If you prefer there is a City Sightseeing York Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour or guided cycling tour of York you could join.

It takes only takes approximately 2 hours 45 minutes by train direct from Edinburgh Waverley Station to York.

Catch the train from London Kings Cross for the 2-hour trip direct to York.

If you are planning a UK road trip and want to include York in your itinerary there are a few options for parking.

If you are visiting for the day York has a Park and Ride scheme – park at one of the 6 designated car parks located and catch a bus into the city. Fees apply.

There are also 15 public car parks operated by the City of York. On-street parking is available but limited to up to 2 hours until 3 pm. Fees vary depending on the length of time you plan to park.

Alternatively, look for accommodation that has free car parking included.

Where to Eat and Drink in York

With so many things to do in York you’re going to be very busy, but don’t forget to take a moment to eat, drink and make merry. There are plenty of cafes, eateries, restaurants, pubs and bars.

Just a short stroll from the train station, Partisan is a cosy café with a top-notch reputation, good service and even better brunch. With offerings such as eggs benedict and a full veggie English, you certainly won’t go hungry.

The birthplace of Guy Fawkes the medieval Inn is located in the shadow of York Minster. The Inn retains many of its original features such as gas-lighting and timber staircase which all add to its character and atmosphere.

Enjoy classic British food in the restaurant or bar. The Guy Fawkes steak and ale pie is highly recommended! Pair with a pint of Black Sheep Best Bitter or another from a wide selection of real ales.

If you choose to book a stay in one of the Inn’s 13 en-suite bedrooms there is the added perk of a free 2-hour walking tour of York.

• The Inn offers a variety of menus including A La Carte, Sunday Lunch, and a special Conspirator’s menu served Monday – Friday 12 pm – 6 pm.

How about a tipple at a traditional pub that dates back to 1873? The Old White Swan is a charming place, jammed full of character and atmosphere.

As well as the usual spirits – vodka, brandy and whiskey – there’s another one, the Old White Swan’s resident ghost!

The pub grub here is good, with classics such as toad in the hole, fish n’ chips and apple pie on the menu, and there are lots of cask ales to enjoy too.

Fluffy pancakes and a chocolate orange hot chocolate, anyone? Head to Brew & Brownie to enjoy both. The treats here are Instagram worthy, and they taste divine.

Brew & Brownie proved to be so popular that the owners opened another venue (The Bakeshop) just two doors along!

Jalou is big on cocktails, and offers RnB with a chilled-out, stylish vibe. There’s a resident DJ and a buzzing atmosphere.

The bar is located near to the train station, and the building itself is pretty special too. Jalou sits in a Grade II listed church, and it boasts period gothic features.

How could you visit York without popping into the legendary Bettys Tea Room ?

The famous café has been trading since 1936 and has strikingly beautiful interiors, inspired by none other than the Queen Mary Ocean Liner. Enjoy one of the tasty teas (sourced from around the world by expert buyers), or a delicious coffee (and a plump fruity scone whilst you’re at it) – yum!

Although Yorkshire has long been divided into four counties, York is still considered the capital of this lovely corner of Northern England.

The city is filled with fun things to do and attractions that reveal the many layers of its long history. York boasts the country's longest circuit of medieval city walls , stretching over two miles and offering marvelous views of the city. It is also home to York Minster , the largest medieval church in England.

Imposing York Minster, known in full as the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York, is a must-visit. It was built to commemorate the monks who converted those living in the surrounding countryside to Christianity. You'll spot its spires from pretty much every corner of the city, making it an easy attraction to find.

Dedicated to St. Peter, York Minster's bishops even sat on the council at Arles in 314 CE. After this, little is known until 627 CE, when the oldest documented wooden church was built here for the baptism of King Edwin of Northumbria. Succeeding Saxon and Norman constructions were destroyed, and the present cathedral was built in the Gothic style in the 13th century.

A highlight of a tour is seeing the Minster's impressive stained-glass windows, most notably the Pilgrimage Window . Dating from about 1312 and positioned above a stunning golden dragon's head that stares up at it, the window depicts Peter surrounded by pilgrims along with a few unusual details, such as the funeral of a monkey.

Also of interest is the Cathedral Treasury, with its interactive galleries portraying the building's colorful history from its Roman roots to today. Displays include more than 2,000 years of remarkable artifacts found nearby that provide an insight into the cathedral's important role over the centuries.

And if you've got a head for heights, York Minster's spectacular medieval Central Tower , the highest point in the city, is a must-do. But be warned: it does involve a climb of 230 feet up 275 steps, so be prepared to expend some energy.

Along the way, you'll enjoy close-up views of some of the cathedral's most interesting decorative features, including its pinnacles and gargoyles. Once outside, all that hard work will be rewarded with superb views of York's historic city center, so have your camera ready.

Located just a short walk away from York railway station, the National Railway Museum has an impressive array of locomotives and carriages dating from 1820 to the present day. You'll want to begin your adventure exploring the many exhibits in the Great Hall. Here, you'll find displays and engines related to the early days of steam, from the famous Stephenson's Rocket , which pulled Britain's first passengers, to the exquisite Mallard , the world's fastest steam engine.

The Great Hall also houses an impressive collection of modern diesel and electric engines, including a Japanese bullet train. Other fun things to do here include climbing over a replica pedestrian bridge for a bird's-eye view of the engines, and taking a fast virtual ride aboard the Mallard Experience.

Over in Station Hall, preserved railway platforms and their parked engines offer an authentic peek into the workings of a Victorian-era train station. Highlights include a Victorian mail train from 1838, turn-of-the-century freight and steam trains, and luxurious Edwardian Pullman carriages.

Also on display is a collection of Royal Trains, including carriages once used by Queen Victoria . If possible, try to time your visit to coincide with one of the regular demonstrations of the facility's vintage turntable for an up-close look at how these massive machines were turned around (check the museum's official website below for details).

The museum also boasts more than a million artifacts. The collection includes everything from posters to paintings, along with more than 1,000 hours of unique recordings relating to Britain's rich railway history. A reference library, known as the "Search Engine," is also available for those wanting to dig a little deeper.

No-cost admission undoubtedly makes this attraction the best thing to do for free in York. Guided tours are available for a fee. A great York afternoon tea experience can also be enjoyed in the historic Countess of York carriage (advance bookings recommended).

A walk along York's medieval city walls leaves a lasting impression of this beautiful city. Built mainly in the 14th century, the walls incorporate some of the city's original Roman structures and total over two miles (3.4 kilometers) in length.

Adding to the fun is the chance to explore four of the old gates , all of them well-preserved. These include Walmgate Bar, Monk Bar, and Bootham Bar, all with their original portcullis, and Micklegate Bar with its three knights.

If you've only got time to tackle part of the wall, the stretch of wall between Bootham Bar and Monk Bar offers excellent views of York Minster.

One of York's biggest tourist attractions is the Shambles, a narrow 14th-century thoroughfare with lovely overhanging timber-framed buildings.

Once known as "The Great Flesh Shambles" for its numerous butcher shops and stalls, the area is now an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, tearooms, and boutiques. Look up as you stroll, and you can still spot the meat hooks outside many of these old shop fronts.

The Shambles is also where you'll find five of York's fascinating Snickelways . This collection of small streets and winding footpaths connects the old city and is a treat to explore. The area is especially fun to explore in early winter, when the streets are lit as part of the city's annual Christmas Festival.

Built on the site of the original castle, York Castle Museum offers a marvelous insight into the English way of life throughout the centuries. Highlights include Kirkgate , a perfect recreation of a Victorian street, complete with shops; Toy Stories , a history of children's toys; and a Victorian parlor and 17th-century dining room.

Another fascinating exhibit is The Cells in the old Debtors Prison. A highlight of a visit is seeing the former Condemned Cell once occupied by highwayman Dick Turpin. The site has in fact been a place of incarceration for more than 1,000 years, with the York Crown Court still holding those accused of serious crimes.

Afterwards, be sure to check out the museum's database of former prisoners and victims going back hundreds of years for mention of any relatives! Picnic facilities are available, along with a gift shop.

Located between Fishergate and Skeldergate Bridge and overlooking York Castle Museum, Clifford's Tower was originally built of wood by the Normans in 1068. What you see towering above you today, however, was constructed in the 13th century as a replacement for the original wooden fortress, and is the oldest remaining part of York Castle.

Named after Roger de Clifford, who was executed here in 1322 as leader of the Lancastrian party, the tower was also infamous as the place where the king would put those he had executed on display.

Recently upgraded and renovated with large wood beams and steel stairways, the tower is popular today for its stunning panoramic views over the city.

The Jorvik Viking Centre in Coppergate documents the daily lives of the Vikings in 9th-century York, or "Jorvik." The site includes reconstructions of Viking dwellings and medieval workshops and is built above the remains of 1,000-year-old wooden houses.

The museum also hosts on- and off-site reenactments , as well as opportunities for young and old alike to dress up and play Vikings – without, of course, any of the pillaging. If possible, try to plan your visit to coincide with the center's annual Viking Festival, held each February.

An easy 30-minute drive northeast of York is majestic Castle Howard. Set amid 1,000 acres of parkland and richly furnished with antiquities and treasures, family-owned Castle Howard is undoubtedly one of England's most spectacular country estates.

This magnificent Palladian mansion, famous as the backdrop for acclaimed TV drama Brideshead Revisited , was built for the third Earl of Carlisle by dramatist-turned-architect John Vanbrugh. Its many elegant rooms contain paintings and carvings, period furniture, and costumes, as well as valuable vases and statues.

The grounds are on a scale to match the house, with an impressive family mausoleum, an obelisk, a pyramid, and the lovely Temple of the Four Winds . And, of course, there's the spectacular fountain at the front of the mansion, perfect for the ultimate "selfie."

Feeling peckish? There are no less than three great cafés on-site, each serving a wonderful afternoon tea, plus a coffee shop and ice-cream parlor. Be sure to check the official website for news of concerts and events, including the popular Festival of Dogs , a fun gathering of pet-owners from far and wide, with their pups, of course.

Along with its superb geological and natural history collections, the Yorkshire Museum contains many important Roman and Anglo-Saxon archaeological artifacts. It's also where you'll find the 1,000-year-old Cawood Sword , the best preserved such Viking weapon in the world. Medieval sculptures and utensils are exhibited in St. Mary's Abbey.

Be sure to spend time in the lovely, and free to enter, Museum Gardens . Extending across some 10 acres in the heart of the old city, this beautiful garden is home to more than 40 species of birds, as well as trees, shrubs, and flowers under the ruined walls and arches of the medieval St. Mary's Abbey.

Recently expanded, the gardens now include an Edible Wood and an Artists Garden, an outdoor gallery with rotating exhibits.

The area between Coney Street and King's Square near York Minster is a bustling pedestrianized shopping quarter famous for its narrow cobbled streets and charming shops and cafés. It's where you'll find old St. Helen's Church, named in honor of the mother of Emperor Constantine, with its 15th-century stained glass windows.

It's also where you'll find the Mansion House, designed by Lord Burlington. Built in 1725, it's now the official residence of the Lord Mayor. Also worthy of a visit in Stonegate is Barley Hall , a 14th-century townhouse that aims to provide an authentic look at life during medieval times.

Spend time exploring the banks of the River Ouse, which splits York in two. In addition to its numerous lovely gardens, you can see wonderful examples of riverside architecture, such as the majestic 15th-century Guildhall .

Another great view of York can be enjoyed from a cruise on the river, either on an all-weather passenger boat or on a self-drive motor boat. In the summer, cruises also go to Bishopthorpe Palace , the riverside residence of the Archbishop of York. And don't forget to stop for a sweet treat from the Solar Ice Cream Boat .

Two of York's prettiest churches are St. Martin-le-Grand in Coney Street, a charming mix of medieval and modern architecture, and St. Michael's in Spurriergate, with its 12th-century arcades, glass paintings, and impressive 18th-century altarpiece.

Other churches of note include St. Mary's in Bishophill Junior, with its Saxon tower and an altar by Temple Moore; St. Denys' in Walmgate, with 14th-century stained-glass windows; St. Margaret's (also in Walmgate) with its Roman doorway and tower; and attractive little Trinity Church (14th century) in Goodramgate, with its small garden.

The 15th-century All Saints Church in North Street is also worth visiting, and is notable for its stained-glass windows, and the Oratory Church of Saint Wilfrid, York, usually just called York Oratory, is known as the "Mother Church of the city of York."

Just 29 miles from York, the attractive old market town of Beverley lies in the foothills of the East Yorkshire Wolds. Its best-known landmark is the impressive Beverley Minster , a 334-foot-long cathedral made even more famous for its starring role as a stand-in for London's Westminster Abbey in the hit TV series, Queen Victoria .

Notable highlights include its lovely Romanesque marble font and the Maiden's Tomb . The choir is a magnificent example of Early English architecture, and its choir-stalls (1520) have the largest number of misericords in England (68).

Other fun things to do in Beverley include visiting St. Mary's , a cross-shaped church begun in the 12th century, and attending the Beverley Early Music Festival in May, which highlights both early music and the architectural heritage of the town.

Part of the National Trail Network, Yorkshire Wolds Way passes through the delightful scenery of the North Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds , which in places rises to heights of up to 800 feet.

This nearly 80-mile trail runs from Filey near Scarborough on the North East Coast south to Hull . Along the way, you can stop off at quaint B&Bs or well-equipped campsites (the full trail takes six days to complete), or simply tackle one or two highlights such as the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy.

Just 20 minutes' drive east of historic downtown York, the Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial makes a pleasant outing for those interested in the machinery and the history of war. Established in RAF Elvington, a former WWII bomber base, the museum encompasses the largest independently owned collections of aircraft in the country.

Highlights include exhibits focusing on the history of flight, along with a variety of static displays of vintage aircraft and vehicles. Of the 50 planes owned by the museum, many are still operational and are put through their paces during special "Thunder Day" events held throughout the year.

The weeklong York Early Music Festival (NCEM) takes place each July and focuses on a different composer and theme each year. Events include choral and chamber concerts and recitals as well as larger symphonic performances in some of York's most popular music venues.

There are also lectures related to featured composers. Another annual event is the York Food Festival held in the autumn, an excellent chance to sample some of the best food and drink from the city and its surrounds.

York's top tourist attractions lie within or just outside its irregular ring of ancient walls. Less than two kilometers across, this area is best explored on foot, so any address inside is a perfect location for sightseeing. This old city center is divided by the River Ouse, with most major sights on the northeast side. The rail station is just outside the walls on the west. Here are some highly-rated hotels in York:

Luxury Hotels :

• On the side of the old town near the rail station, The Grand Hotel & Spa has a pool, a restaurant, and superb service.
• Just outside the walls and only a two-minute walk from the station and boasting its own entrance from this transportation hub, the opulently restored The Principal York has a pool and rooms with lovely views over the gardens and York Minster, an easy 10-minute walk away.
• The well-located boutique The Parisi Hotel and Townhouse has characterful rooms, some overlooking the courtyard, along with complimentary breakfast and parking.

Mid-Range Hotels:

• Close to several restaurants and a short walk from attractions, Hotel Indigo York has individually decorated rooms and an intimate boutique feel.
• Locations don't get any better than Dean Court Hotel, BW Premier Collection , overlooking York Minster, surrounded by restaurants and shops, and about one minute from the Shambles and three minutes from access to walking around the wall.
• Just across the river from York Castle Museum and Tower Gardens, Middletons York is set in well-kept grounds with a pool and gym.

Budget Hotels:

• Novotel York Centre overlooks the river near York Castle Museum and Tower Gardens and has an indoor pool.
• Also overlooking the river, Park Inn by Radisson York has rooms with views of York Minster, a short walk away.
• Just across the bridge from the old center and the Jorvik Viking Center, The Queens Hotel has on-site parking.

Sightseeing :

• If you're planning on cramming in as many places to see as you can, consider a handy City Sightseeing York Hop-on, Hop-off Bus Tour . This sightseeing bus takes in most of the major tourist attractions and is valid for 24 hours.
• The Best of York on Foot in a Small Group tour is another way to see the city while getting a little exercise. This allows you to see some of the major sites as you wander the streets with a guide. The tour takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Most tourists visiting York want to see a bit more of northern England, too. Several interesting choices are not far away. Leeds , a short distance to the southeast, is a cultural center known for annual events such as the Leeds Festival, the Leeds International Film Festival, and the Leeds International Concert Season.

To the southeast is the university town of Hull , named the UK City of Culture for 2017. North of York is Durham , with its magnificent cathedral, and not far beyond is Newcastle-upon-Tyne , with the Theatre Royal and City Hall, which make the city a magnet for rock and pop concert goers.

Those planning to visit the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park should consider traveling a bit farther into the Lake District , where another national park protects 16 glacial lakes surrounded by fells, moors, and mountains.

York in a Day: The Perfect One-Day Itinerary for York, England

Today we have a guest post from Kelsey from Sights Better Seen on the perfect one-day itinerary for York. Kelsey studied abroad in York, so she has lots of great travel tips and photos to share. Without further ado!

Anytime someone tells me they’re going to England, I tell them to head straight to York. Founded by the Romans in 71 AD, York is one of England’s oldest and most beautiful cities. Around every corner, you’ll find medieval architecture, half-timbered houses, or boxes of colorful flowers. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

Why you should take a day trip to York

Here’s why I fell head over heels in love with this medieval English city and why you probably will, too:

• It’s super haunted – York is hailed as the most haunted city in Europe – some even argue it’s the most haunted city in the world . With 140 ghosts and more than 500 hauntings, they might be right.
• It’s easily walkable – York is a small city, so you don’t have to bother with public transportation. The city center is just a 15-minute walk from the train station.
• It’s safe – As a solo female traveler, I found York to be an extremely safe and welcoming place to visit.

Getting to York

York is located in Northern England; it’s 3.5 hours north of London by car . If you travel by train, it takes about 2 hours, making a day trip to York from London totally doable.

Your one day in York itinerary: What to do, see, eat, and drink

Have a full english breakfast at partisan.

Only a five-minute walk from the train station, Partisan is a great place to start your day trip to York. I recommend trying Partisan’s full English breakfast which consists of fried eggs, sausages, back bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, toast, beans, and black pudding. It’s absolutely delicious. If you’re not a meat-eater, Partisan also offers vegetarian and vegan versions of the full English breakfast.

Walk the City Walls

Originally built by the Romans, York is encircled by medieval city walls (they’re actually the longest medieval town walls in England !). What’s neat is you can walk on top of the walls, which offer stunning views of the city. It takes an hour or so to walk the complete loop, which is about 2 miles long.

The walls can be a little crowded, so I recommend visiting them right when they open (8 a.m.) or just before they close (dusk). They’re free to visit, so I suggest hopping on and off the wall as you explore York. You can do a free self-guided tour — click here to read more . Marvel at the city’s gatehouses (known as “bars”)

The wall is punctuated by “bars”, meaning gatehouses, which were used in medieval times to collect tolls. There are four main bars meaning in York: Bootham Bar, Monk Bar, Walmgate Bar, and Micklegate Bar. I recommend seeing all of them!

See a museum (or five)

York is home to many excellent museums. My personal favorite is the York Castle Museum. Though it’s no longer a castle, it’s a former prison that has been converted into a quirky mixture of exhibits: You can walk down an old Victorian street, visit an 18th-century debtor’s prison, step back into the 1960s, and so much more.

Here are some other unique museums to see while in York:

• Vikings at JORVIK Viking Centre : A museum dedicated to all things Viking, featuring reconstructions of old Viking settlements. £12.50 for adults.
• National Railway Museum : If you love trains, you’ll be enamored with this museum. It’s also free!
• York’s Chocolate Story : Do I really have to convince you to go to a chocolate museum? You get to make your own chocolate bar and learn all about the history of this delicious sweet. £12.95 for adults.
• York Art Gallery : A public art gallery with a collection dating back to the 14th century. £7.27 for adults.

Enjoy afternoon tea at Betty’s

In operation since 1936, Betty’s is THE place to have afternoon tea in York. I recommend ordering the Traditional Afternoon Tea that comes with tea sandwiches, scones with clotted cream, and a pot of tea. It costs £20 per person. If you’re on a budget, you can get the abbreviated version for £10 per person, which comes with tea and two scones.

Stroll through the Shambles

The Shambles is a small, narrow street that dates back to the Middle Ages. Walking down the street, you’ll wonder if you’ve just teleported straight into Hogwarts. Funnily enough, the Shambles is one of the locations that reportedly inspired Diagon Alley. You’ll even find several Harry Potter-themed stores there.

Along with the Harry Potter-themed stores, you’ll find all kinds of quirky and fun shops: chocolate shops, a cheese store, craft beer sellers, bakeries, to name a few. There’s a lot to do on the Shambles, so be sure to leave some time to explore.

Try a pasty at The Cornish Bakery

If you’re feeling peckish, stop by the Cornish Bakery for a pasty. A pasty is a traditional baked good that originated in the southwest of England; It’s basically a folded pie that’s filled with meat, cheese, and/or vegetables.

If you’re a vegetarian, I highly recommend trying the sweet potato and feta pasty at the Cornish Bakery — it’s amazing!

Visit the York Minster, York’s beautiful cathedral

Next, stop by the York Minster . Locally known as “The Minster”, this enormous Gothic cathedral is arguably York’s most famous landmark. I recommend paying to see inside the cathedral, as the interior is just as beautiful as the outside. An adult ticket costs £16.50, which includes both a church and a tower visit. The tower provides beautiful views of the city, so I highly recommend paying to go up.

Tip – if you visit an hour or two before the Minster closes, you’ll hear the choir singing the Evensong, which is the evening service. It’s also much less crowded at this time, which is always a plus in my book.

Have dinner at The Golden Fleece

The Golden Fleece is a traditional English pub that’s also the most haunted pub in York. Fifteen different ghosts “live” in the hotel! The most commonly seen ghost is Lady Alice Peckett, whose husband, John Peckett, owned the hotel and was mayor of York.

Foodwise, the Golden Fleece serves traditional pub food but offers vegetarian options, too. If you stay for dessert, be sure to get the sticky toffee pudding – it’s amazing!

Go on a ghost tour

If you stay later in the evening, you HAVE to go on a ghost tour in York. I recommend the Shadows of York Ghost Walk which costs £6 for adults. The Original Ghost Walk of York also comes highly recommended and costs £5 for adults. You can also book the York ghost bus tour here , which lasts 75 minutes and includes a comedy show.

Sip cocktails at Evil Eye

This quirky, dimly lit bar has a brightly painted interior that’s the perfect place to escape the rainy English weather. Evil Eye is known for its impressive selection of gin but serves an array of creative cocktails with many other spirits as well. You can even book a gin tasting or learn to make cocktails!

When to visit York

November & December – In November and December, get into the Christmas spirit by visiting the York Christmas Festival, where you can enjoy warm cups of gluhwein, delicious baked goods, and fun activities.

February – In February, visit York to see the Yorvik Viking festival, which is an entire week of all things Viking. You’ll see reenactments (and even some battles!) and learn all about York’s Viking history.

March – In March, York hosts Restaurant Week, where you can dine at pricey restaurants at steeply discounted prices.

July – In July, York hosts the Great Yorkshire Fringe, which is ten days of theater, song, and dance productions. Similar to the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival, this festival is fun and enjoyable for all.

August – On a weekend in August, stop by the York Walls Festival to discover York’s heritage related to the City Walls.

Where to stay in York:

The Golden Fleece -Not only does this pub serve delicious food, but you can also stay the night. It’s also located in the city center, which is quite convenient. You’ll literally have The Shambles at your doorstep.

The Lawrence Luxury Aparthotel – At the Lawrence, you can have your own little apartment situated in the heart of York. If you like to cook, you’re in luck – these apartments come with fully equipped kitchens.

Moxy York – This is a mid-range modern hotel with a quirky feel. All rooms and common areas are accented with bright purple, giving it a funky vibe. While the Moxy isn’t directly in the city center, it’s only a 5-10 minute walk to the center of town.

Safestay York – Located in a 16th-century Georgian townhouse, this hostel has an elegant and funky vibe. They offer mixed bed dorms, female-only dorms, or private rooms. It’s located right next to the train station.

YHA York – YHA York is a budget hostel that offers female-only, male-only, and private group rooms. This hostel is about a 25-minute walk to the center but is located on the River Ouse, making for a pretty setting. I’d suggest walking along the river into town!

And there you have it – all my suggestions for spending one day in York! As you now know, it’s a fantastic city with tons to do. I’m already trying to plan my next visit – I’m thinking December as I’m a sucker for Christmas markets.

What can I expect on my visit?

During the school year, our campus visits begin at 9:15 a.m. During the summer, our campus visits start at 10:00 a.m.  One of our enrollment counselors will be your personal guide for the day and your schedule will be customized to include the items you care about most.  Visits range from just a few hours to a full day depending on what you've selected. Those planning on trying out for a sport should plan on a full day.  When you set up your visit, you can choose to include the following activities:

York is an ancient city in Yorkshire which has experienced and been influenced by many centuries of history. This makes for a city centre that is full of quirks and different architectural styles. York is a great place just to walk the streets because it’s so beautiful and a wonderful place to photograph so check out these 8 prettiest streets in this extraordinary city and be transported through time.

1. The Shambles

The Shambles is undoubtedly one of the prettiest streets in York and it could be argued within the whole of England! It’s one of the best preserved medieval streets in the world and coming early in the morning without any other tourists for distraction makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time expecting someone to call out asking what wares you’re after today!

The higgledy piggledy buildings and cobbled path are really what makes this street so unique to look at on first glance (and make for a great photo shot). BUT look closer and you’ll notice even more details that add to its intrigue. Notice the dip in the middle of the path, this was where shop keepers would wash away their waste (imagine the smell 😬). Notice the hooks in the walls and the benches on the windows where butchers would hang out their produce for their customers to view.

2. Fossgate

For the Romans, Fossgate was the South Easterly entrance to the city of York but it was the Vikings that turned it into a street. This is also where the Rowntree’s chocolate empire began (now under Nestle’s ownership) when they purchased a small chocolate business on the street. There are a number of chocolate and sweet shops on this street which nod to its history. My favourite spot along Fossgate is The Hairy Fig and Merchants Hall facade which come together as a quirky picture. Duck under the archway to find the Merchant Adventurers Hall (a 14th century guildhall).

3. Low Petergate

Low Petergate is a beautiful street that runs parallel to the Minster and turns into High Petergate which you can find later on in this list! Both Low & High Petergate are named after Saint Peter. Low Petergate has some wonderful cafes and restaurants to enjoy as well as lovely orange bricked buildings and a stellar view to the towers of the Minster for a beautiful Instagram shot!

As you walk along Low Petergate look out for some of the little snickelways that stray off from the main street! These are curious narrow alleyways that are dotted through York’s city centre. How many can you find?!

4. Grape Lane

Grape Lane is actually just off Low Petergate so another easy street to see whilst walking through York’s city centre. It looks beautiful in the early morning light and with the lamps still on (although let’s be honest everyone’s really looking at the Cheese Trader shop sign 🤤). If you search for Grape’s Lane you may get a surprise; it’s original name was common in the Middle Ages and based on it being an area of the city known for prostitution. Well, now it’s home to some lovely cafes and shops as well as this lovely view to the top of the Minster and striking buildings at the end!

5. Chapter House Street

Chapter House Street is an intriguing lane that runs beside the Treasurer’s House – a National Trust property with a gorgeous garden. I love the cobbled stones down here and just as it turns into Goodramgate you can find the well known Grays Court (alleged to be one of the most continuously inhabited houses in the UK). I’m still intrigued by the number 72 on the building on the left!

You have to make sure to turn around on Chapter House Street to get this stunning view back to York Minster. The light coloured stone of the Minster contrasts wonderfully with the red brick of the wall of the Treasurer’s House.

6. High Petergate

High Petergate leads up to the Minster from Bootham Bar and provides a spectacular entrance into the city centre of York. The impressive Minster rises up to its full 72m height ahead of you and the street itself is lined with historic buildings and pubs. Bootham Bar is York’s oldest city gate and was used as the route into York from the north in the medieval period. Take the walls from Bootham Bar to Monk Bar for a great perspective of the Minster.

7. Stonegate

Stonegate would have been the most direct for transporting the limestone used to build the Minster but was also the first road in York to be paved in stone so its name could originate from either of these places! Today, it is one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city centre with a host of vibrant shops, cafes and pubs to enjoy. It has plenty of unusual buildings and detailed shop fronts that make it a charming sight to behold. On Stonegate you can find one of the two Betty’s cafes in York, a great place to refuel with a cake and a coffee as well as the peculiar tiny pub House of the Trembling Madness!

8. College Street

College Street has become one of my favourite locations in York to photograph, mainly because of the striking features of St William’s College, with its elegant black and white Tudor beams and contrasting dainty blue shutters! But also because of that amazing view to the back of the Minster where you can really gain an impression of its size.

You can also find some lovely cafes along this stretch of road (I follow Crumbs Cupcakery on Instagram and I NEED to try one). Plus, did you know York is well known for its ghost stories and 5 College Street is where The Crying Girl is alleged to have been seen looking out of the upper window on the ancient building at the end…spooky! But there’s a lot to see and it can be confusing to decide how to plan your trip to these must-see memorials. Ground Zero and 9/11 Memorials: What We’ll Cover

Ground Zero is a large area that’s known as the area where the World Trade Center towers collapsed and many months of cleanup occurred. Here you’ll find the National September 11 Memorial Museum, the 9/11 Memorial Pools, the FDNY Memorial Wall, and the One World Trade Center where you can explore their observation deck at the top of the building. One World Trade Center: Hours, Tickets, and Directions

One World Trade Center remembers those who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It is not only the tallest building in the World Trade Center Complex but also in the nation. It’s an impressive sight to view from the outside at 1,776 feet high. However, the inside is also something to see. Here, you’ll find the Oculus subway, Westfield Shops, and restaurants.

While here, check out One World Observatory. It sits at the top of One World Trade Center boasting city views at 102 stories high. And you can try an interactive tour and food from the restaurant and bar.

Admission fee to One World Trade Center: There is no fee to enter the World Trade Center Westfield Shops or Oculus.

Hours: Westfield Shops at the Oculus are open daily, Monday-Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm. Sunday hours are from 11 am to 6 pm.

Admission fee to the One World Observatory: General admission starts at $44 per person.

Hours: The Observatory is currently open Thursday through Monday from 10 am to 9 pm.

Directions: Get here by subway taking the 1 to WTC Cortlandt, the E to World Trade Center, or the R W to Cortlandt. One World Trade Center will be less than a 5-minute walk from the subway station.

9/11 Memorial: Hours, Tickets, and Directions

The 9/11 Memorial opened ten years after the September 11th terror attacks as a place for healing. You’ll find the Memorial Pools, Memorial Glade, and Survivor Tree here to visit quietly and reflect on their meaning for this special area.

Admission fee: There is no fee to visit the 9/11 Memorial.

The 9/11 Memorial Museum reflects on the terror attacks on September 11th and the World Trade Center bombing in 1993. The 110,000 square feet space hosts artifacts and images that tell personal stories of victims, rescue workers, and others impacted.

One World Trade Center

9/11 Memorial

• The two Memorial Pools are at the site of the former North and South Towers. Both have two of the largest man-made waterfalls that descend 50 feet. The name of the victims from both 1993 and 2001 (including Flight 93 and the Pentagon) are etched in the bronze wall found alongside the pools.
• The Memorial Glade represents rescue workers and others who were exposed to toxins after the attack and during the long months of cleanup.
• There is also the Callery pear tree that survived the attacks. It was later replanted at the Memorial and named the Survivor Tree.
• The bronze FDNY Memorial Wall, which honors the firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. It is not in the Memorial but just a short two-minute walk away.

9/11 Memorial Museum

• The FDNY Ladder 3 firetruck   that was recovered from the World Trade Center site.
• The memorial exhibition featuring a floor-to-ceiling photo showcase of the victims.
• Artifacts from victims that help shed light on their lives before the bombings.

Ground Zero and 9/11 Memorial Tours

All the guided in-person tours are led by New Yorkers with a connection to 9/11. There are several tours to choose from , including the 90-minute All Access Ground Zero Tour with museum and One World Observatory entry for $109 per adult. Other options include only a guided tour of Ground Zero ($39 per adult), or a tour and entrance to either the museum or One World Observatory ($79 per adult).

There is also the official 9/11 Memorial Audio Guide app ($1.99) with a 40-minute tour discussing the attacks and Memorial design. The audio guide is narrated by a New Yorker who lost a family member on 9/11.

Facts About Ground Zero and the 9/11 Memorials

Though many tourists might be familiar with the events of September 11th, some may not know these important facts about Ground Zero and the 9/11 museum, thanks to the official 9/11 Memorial website and History.com.

• Before the Twin Towers fell they were both over 1,300 feet in height. The North Tower was 1,368 feet high while the South Tower reached 1,362 feet.
• The first plane hit the first tower at 8:45 am at approximately the 80th floor, and the second plane hit the South Tower at 9:03 am at approximately the 60th floor.
• The buildings took roughly ten seconds to collapse to the ground bringing with them about 300,000 tons of steel.
• Almost 3,000 people died in the 9/11 attacks (2,983 total), and 343 of those were firefighters who are also honored at the FDNY Memorial Wall.
• To create the 9/11 Memorial there was an international competition that took place In 2003. The following year, architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker were announced the winners with their design titled Reflecting Absence which featured the two pools and white oak trees we see today.
• The Memorial Pools are about the size of one acre each and took ten years to build. The National September 11 Museum opened its doors three years later and continues to be one of the most popular museums to visit in NYC.

President Biden and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan reaffirmed on Wednesday the decades-old bond between their two countries, declaring a unity of military and economic purpose as they struggle to confront the actions of an increasingly hostile Chinese government.

Mr. Kishida’s daylong visit at the White House culminated with a lengthy joint statement from the two leaders listing dozens of new agreements. Here is a partial list of some of the major announcements.

Military cooperation

The United States and Japan announced a plan to upgrade their military command and control functions to better coordinate and work together. “More effective U.S.-Japan Alliance command and control provides strengthened deterrence and promotes a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the two leaders announced in a statement released hours after their meeting.

The two countries said they would increasingly partner to produce military equipment. “We announce our intention to explore co-production of advanced and interoperable missiles for air defense and other purposes to further bolster the Alliance deterrence posture,” the statement said.

The Biden administration said it would ask Congress for authorization to use private companies in Japan to do some repairs on U.S. naval ships. The two countries also announced that they would “explore the possibility of conducting maintenance and repair on engines of Japan-based U.S. Air Force aircrafts, including fourth-generation fighters.”

The two countries revealed that the United States, Britain and Australia, which agreed to join forces last year to construct and deploy advanced nuclear submarines, are “considering cooperation with Japan” in the partnership, known as Aukus.

Space exploration

The two countries agreed that two Japanese astronauts would be among those to travel to the moon on future American Artemis missions. “Japan will provide and maintain a pressurized rover to support astronauts living and working on the moon, while the United States will allocate two astronaut flight opportunities to the lunar surface for Japan on future Artemis missions,” the statement said.

Japan will participate in a NASA mission known as Dragonfly, bound for the Saturn moon Titan, and collaborate on the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, a next-generation observatory.

Economic cooperation

The two countries announced several major economic deals involving private company investments, including a plan by Microsoft to invest $2.9 billion over the next two years in Japan in artificial intelligence; a $1 billion Google investment to improve digital communications infrastructure; and an investment by Toyota of nearly $8 billion for electric car battery production in Greensboro, N.C., which is expected to create 3,000 jobs.

They announced a $110 million artificial intelligence joint venture by the University of Washington, University of Tsukuba, Carnegie Mellon University and Keio University. It will be funded by Nvidia, Arm, Amazon, Microsoft and several Japanese companies.

The leaders announced the creation of the Japan Innovation Campus, which will aim to help Japanese startups in Silicon Valley, and the Global Startup Campus in Tokyo. Both projects have a goal of accelerating innovation.

Climate cooperation

The two countries pledged to work more closely to reduce the effects of climate change and to accelerate the transition to clean energy. They announced the creation of a “new high-level dialogue” on the implementation of their own domestic measures to maximize the effectiveness of their policies.

The two countries pledged to work toward modernization of power grids and to share best practices in that area.

The United States praised Japan’s move to resume nuclear power generation. “In pursuit of this vision, the United States applauds the prime minister’s plan to restart nuclear reactors to meet its 2030 decarbonization goals,” the statement said.

People-to-people ties

The two countries announced the creation of a Mineta Ambassadors Program named after Norman Y. Mineta , a former member of Congress and transportation secretary who was the first Japanese American cabinet member. The $12 million program will involve U.S. and Japanese high school and university students.

Japan will become a full member of the U.S. Global Entry program, which allows faster clearance for people who are preapproved to travel from foreign airports into the United States with less hassle.

NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden is expected to give a live virtual keynote address to the Rev. Al Sharpton’s racial justice conference in New York on Friday, organizers said.

Biden, who is ramping up his Democratic reelection pitch to Black voters ahead of a rematch with Republican former President Donald Trump this fall, will tout his accomplishments and highlight policies enacted to address entrenched racial inequity when he addresses the annual National Action Network Convention, the White House said Thursday.

The announcement, first shared with The Associated Press, caps a week of appearances from Biden administration officials and other prominent local and national politicians. Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the convention in person last year.

Biden is not expected to take questions from attendees after his remarks on Friday. Sharpton, who has regularly convened a small group of civil rights leaders at the White House on issues affecting Black Americans, will lead a discussion with attendees following the president’s address.

Although Biden historically enjoys high support and approval from Black Democrats, 45% of Black Americans said they disapprove of the way he is handling his job as president in March, according to polling by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research . Just over half said they approve.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

Solar eclipse path of totality map for 2024

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

• Pennsylvania
• New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

• Austin, Texas
• Waco, Texas
• Dallas, Texas
• Little Rock, Arkansas
• Indianapolis, Indiana

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA. 

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.

The Jack Birch Unit were visited by Dr David McConkey, the Director of the Johns Hopkins Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute and Professor in the Department of Urology at Johns Hopkins Medical School.

Research in Dr. McConkey’s laboratory is focused on using genomics to define the molecular mechanisms involved in bladder cancer progression and developing novel therapies for muscle-invasive and metastatic disease. His mission is to make the Johns Hopkins Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute a hub of an international community of researchers who share a commitment to advancing the scientific understanding of bladder cancer and improving its treatment. On Wednesday 10th April 2024, David participated in a workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning run by the York Biomedical Research Institute, where Vlad Ungureanu of the Jack Birch Unit presented his PhD research on bladder cancer.  David then attended the JBU's weekly lab meeting on Thursday 11th April 2024 to discuss areas of collaboration in bladder cancer research and followed by a wrap-up session on the Friday 12th April, including a tour of the JBU laboratories. Judge in Trump’s hush money case allows prosecutors to discuss 'Access Hollywood' tape and affairs as watershed trial begins

Donald Trump made history Monday as the first former president to stand trial on criminal charges — and the official start of jury selection quickly highlighted his polarizing impact on the public.

After the first 96 prospective jurors were brought into a New York courtroom, Judge Juan Merchan asked whether any of those assembled could not be "fair and impartial." More than half raised their hands and were excused from serving on the jury.

The watershed moment for American politics, the presidential election and Trump himself comes as Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee for president. He has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records, a low-level felony punishable by up to four years in prison.

“The name of this case is the People of the State of New York versus Donald Trump,” Merchan told the initial pool of jurors in the afternoon. Trump stood and turned around when he was introduced as the defendant and gave the prospective jurors — some of whom were staring at him intently — a little tight-lipped smirk. 

Trump had his eyes closed for a period of time as the judge was reading the potential jurors his instructions, and his eyes looked red and bloodshot when he opened them and peered at the judge.

After the court day concluded, Trump told reporters in a hallway the case is "a scam. It’s a political witch hunt. It continues, and it continues forever, and we’re not going to be given a fair job. It’s a very, very sad thing."

The jury selection process started slowly — the pool wasn't brought in until the afternoon, and after the initial group of those who said they couldn't be fair were excused, another nine were excused after saying they couldn't serve for other reasons. By the end of the day, nine other jurors had answered preliminary questions — although one wound up being excused — and were scheduled to face follow-up questions on Tuesday morning.

The process also got off to a slow start because lawyers from both sides argued over some of the more sensational evidence that prosecutors from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office hope to use to show why Trump was eager to bury negative stories about him during the 2016 presidential election.

Prosecutors allege then-candidate Trump took part in a scheme with his then-lawyer Michael Cohen and the publisher of the National Enquirer to suppress scandalous stories about him in the run-up to Election Day.

One of those stories involved porn star Stormy Daniels , who alleged she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Trump has denied the claim, and Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 in October 2016 to keep quiet about the allegation. After he was elected, Trump repaid Cohen in payments recorded as legal fees at his company —documents the DA alleges were falsified to keep the hush money payments secret.

The trial is an opportunity for the former president to face off with Merchan, whom Trump has frequently attacked publicly in the run-up to the trial. The judge addressed Trump directly at one point, issuing him standard court warnings that were made more dramatic by Trump's status as a former president, his frequent public attacks on the judge and his many disruptions in his civil trials last year. "If you disrupt the proceedings we can proceed with the trial in your absence. … Do you understand?" the judge asked. "I do," Trump replied.

Merchan also warned Trump that if he fails to show up in court without any explanation, a warrant would be issued for his arrest. 

The back and forth came after Merchan had heard arguments about the alleged “catch and kill” scheme, the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape and the allegations of sexual assault from various women that came out during the campaign — all while Trump sat at counsel table with little visible reaction.

Merchan greenlighted a request from prosecutor Joshua Steinglass to show jurors during the trial some headlines from the Enquirer from the 2016 Republican presidential primary campaign that they contend were part of the overall scheme to boost Trump, including stories trashing then-Trump rivals Ben Carson and Sens. Marco Rubio, of Florida, and Ted Cruz, of Texas.

The prosecutor said he also hoped to elicit information about the timing of Trump's alleged affair with another woman whom the Enquirer paid to keep quiet ahead of the election, former Playboy model Karen McDougal . Steinglass said they didn't plan to elicit "salacious details," but did want to note that the timing of the alleged affair was while Melania Trump was pregnant with Trump's child and the baby was a newborn. He said the information was relevant because it showed why Trump wanted to suppress it ahead of the election.

The judge said he'd allow testimony about the alleged affair, but not the information about Melania Trump.

Steinglass also asked Merchan to reconsider his earlier ruling that the jury not hear the notorious " Access Hollywood " tape, on which Trump was caught on a hot mic saying he can grope women without their consent because "when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything."

Audio from the 2005 hot mic moment became public in October 2016, and prosecutors contend that's why Trump was eager to silence Daniels. Steinglass also asked the judge to allow in a snippet from Trump's deposition in writer E. Jean Carroll's defamation case against him, where he defended the comment, saying, "Historically, that's true with stars."

Merchan said he still believes the tape itself is "prejudicial" and "should not come in" to evidence, but he said he would allow prosecutors to use a transcript of the tape. “The testimony from the E. Jean Carroll deposition should not come in either,” the judge added. 

The judge also shot down prosecutors' suggestion that they may try to mention other women who came forward after the "Access Hollywood" tape became public to accuse Trump of assault, calling it "complete hearsay."

Later, prosecutors asked the judge to sanction Trump for posts they said violated a gag order barring him from publicly attacking witnesses. Prosecutor Christopher Conroy argued Trump should be fined $3,000 for three social media posts that were critical of Cohen and Daniels. “Not included is another post from this morning,” Conroy said, asking the judge to “remind” Trump that “he is a criminal defendant, and like all criminal defendants he is subject to court supervision.” 

Blanche argued that the posts did not violate the gag order, and said Trump was “responding to salacious, repeated, vehement attacks by these witnesses.” 

The judge did not immediately issue a ruling, and said he’d hear arguments on the issue on April 23.

Cohen told NBC News in a statement afterward that the proposed penalty was not severe enough. “Donald knows the damage his posts inflict on targeted individuals. A $1,000 per post fine will do nothing to curtail future violations,” he said.

In a ruling later in the day, the judge sided with the prosecution by giving Trump's lawyers 24 hours to produce the exhibits and evidence they plan to use at trial. “You have 24 hours. Whatever you don’t identify in the next 24 hours, you will be precluded from using,” the judge told Blanche. 

Trump maintains the DA's case is part of a Democratic conspiracy against him, a claim he has used to galvanize his supporters and rake in millions of dollars in fundraising for his campaign. Bragg, the Manhattan DA, is a Democrat, and Trump has falsely claimed that he's doing the bidding of President Joe Biden.

The criminal case was the f irst o f fo ur brought against Trump in four different jurisdictions and is the only case definitively set to go to trial before the election.

Because Trump is required to be in court four days a week (the trial does not take place on Wednesdays), his ability to campaign in person is limited to times the court is not in session.

The jury selection process is expected to take one to two weeks. Two sources with direct knowledge of the situation told NBC News that 6,000 jurors have been called to the Manhattan criminal courts this week — 2,000 more than in a typical week.

During jury selection, eighteen jurors are put in the jury box at a time, and each one in succession reads out loud his or her answers to a series of 42 questions.  The questions include inquiries about what news sources they follow, whether they’ve ever attended any Trump rallies or anti-Trump protests and whether they’ve ever supported the QAnon movement or antifa.

The form does not ask about party affiliation, political contributions or voting history, but the judge said answers to those questions “may easily be gleaned from the responses to other questions.” After the 42 questions are answered, prosecutors can ask the jurors a series of follow-up questions, and then Trump’s attorneys can ask their own follow-ups.

In court Monday, the judge told both sides the list of questions is “by far the most exhaustive questionnaire this court has ever used.”

“There will be no doubt how a prospective juror feels about Mr. Trump, the district attorney or the court” when the jurors are done answering, he added.

The trial will have an anonymous jury , meaning the jurors’ identities and addresses will not be made public. The judge said the move was necessary because of “a likelihood of bribery, jury tampering, or of physical injury or harassment of juror(s).”

While the trial is the first criminal trial involving a former president, it’s the fourth trial in New York involving Trump as a defendant since he left office. He was sued twice by writer E. Jean Carroll for sexual abuse and defamation and he and his company were accused of fraud in a civil case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The verdicts against him in the three cases — all of which he is appealing — total about $550 million.

The highly anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , giving millions of sky-gazers the chance to see a rare cosmic event that won't be viewable again for 20 years.

The eclipse's  path of totality  will travel over a portion of northern Mexico before entering the U.S. It then it will cross 13 states  from Texas to Maine, where the spectacle is expected to attract huge crowds.

If you aren't lucky enough to be in the path of totality this time around, you will have another chance - you'll just have to wait until the 2040s.

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse.

The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach, and political space advocacy.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

2045 solar eclipse

While the 2044 total eclipse will only touch three states, a 2045 eclipse will have a more robust path across the U.S.

Expected to occur on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, this solar eclipse will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

A partial solar eclipse will also be viewable in 35 other states, according to National Eclipse.com

What is a total solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

In the event of a solar eclipse, the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching a small part of our planet. Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight to behold.

Total eclipses can lead to a period of darkness lasting for several minutes, during which time nocturnal animals stir while confused birds and insects may fall silent, NASA says.

When a solar eclipse reaches totality, people are able to see the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona, which is usually obscured by the sun's bright surface. This offers scientists an uncommon opportunity  to study the corona .

Totality also offers spectators a chance to gaze upon the spectacular sight with the naked eye, though  proper  safety  glasses  are still required for the rest of the time.

What states are on the 2024 eclipse path of totality?

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which is expected to occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow will northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The path will then cut diagonally across the country, traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The eclipse's path is expected to end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT before visiting the maritime provinces of Canada, according to estimates.

The NBA playoffs are set to begin Tuesday, with the play-in tournament featuring some of the league’s more interesting teams.

These matchups feature intriguing teams in the Lakers, Pelicans, Warriors and Kings in the Western Conference, while the Sixers and Heat clash in the Eastern Conference.

However, none of these teams are likely to win the title, despite the Heat making the NBA Finals as a play-in No. 8 seed last season.

The Eastern Conference is much stronger than last year, with the Boston Celtics completely reloaded to new heights this year.

Meanwhile, the Jalen Brunson-led Knicks added OG Anunoby, Donte DiVincenzo and more to a stronger roster than the one the Heat saw last season, albeit one without an injured Julius Randle.

It’s all about the Boston Celtics winning the Finals these days, with wild +180 odds before they even start Round One, where they could easily face the Miami Heat, who eliminated them last year.

It’s incredibly difficult to argue against the Celtics, who, in theory, would have a first-round matchup against the Heat/76ers, and the Cavaliers/Magic winner in the No. 4 vs. No. 5 series.

With relative ease, you can look at that side of the bracket and pencil the Celtics into the Eastern Conference Finals.

The other side of that bracket is brutal, with the Knicks, Bucks and Sixers/Heat setting up a painful go-around.

Whoever emerges from that slog will be beaten and battered heading into a possible showdown with the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals.

We’re making a lot of projections here, but should the Celtics indeed avoid Philadelphia in the first round, they are looking at a much stronger case at covering these wild +180 odds.

The Celtics have the lowest odds of winning the NBA Finals entering the playoffs since the 2019 Golden State Warriors (-178), according to SportsOddsHistory.com.
