For 2020, the Dodge Journey is sent once more unto the breach in an attempt to woo you over with its low price and ... well, not much else. This small seven-seat SUV was once available in a multitude of trim levels and offered a strong optional V6 engine and available all-wheel drive. Now Dodge has stripped the Journey down and simplified it to only two trim levels and one available engine and transmission. It also can only be had in front-wheel drive.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2020 Dodge Journey SE Value 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.42 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Briefly ahead of its time, the Journey has been largely forgotten by Dodge and left with a low-budget interior, an underpowered engine and subpar driving dynamics. Even its low starting price isn't enough to make much of a case for the Journey since most of its main competitors can be had for similar money.

In its class, the Kia Sorento leads the way with more space, an abundance of features and an excellent warranty, with the stylish Volkswagen Tiguan coming in second thanks to its safety features and user-friendly tech interface. The recently rehabilitated Mitsubishi Outlander is a more distant third but is still a considerably better option than the Journey.

All Journeys are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (173 horsepower, 166 lb-ft) mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive has been available in the past, but all 2020 Journeys are front-wheel-drive.

Selecting the SE Value trim delivers a bare-bones experience, with manually adjustable cloth seats, 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, and a basic six-speaker audio system with a 4.3-inch touchscreen. Available to the SE Value trim exclusively are the Blacktop Package , which adds black exterior accents and black aluminum wheels, and the SE Value Popular Equipment Group , which includes a power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, satellite radio and three-zone climate control.

The Crossroad upgrades the seating surfaces to leather and brings a power-adjustable driver's seat. It also adds a sunroof and a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system and dresses up the exterior with body-colored mirrors and 19-inch alloy wheels. The Crossroad's Popular Equipment Group includes navigation, a more powerful audio system, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

The Journey I purchased has all wheel drive and drives great in the snow. Its very roomy and has plenty of storage even in the floor. I really like the heated seats and steering wheel.

These Are The Best Features Of The 2022 Dodge Journey

The 2022 Dodge Journey has several appealing features.

The Dodge Durango Hellcat and Durango SRT were on display at the Chicago Auto show and the New York International Autoshow for the production year 2020, but there was no sighting of a new Dodge Journey. Both the Journey and Grand Caravan (now Voyager) were born in the same year, 2008, and accounted for 38 percent of the company’s sales. Both models received major alterations in 2011, but the thousands of Canadian and U.S. families that have fallen in love with the Journey only 'journeyed' more.

Fans were disappointed, but they were not left in suspense about the absence of the Ryan Nagode -designed mid-size crossover SUV that first went into production in 2008. Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announced they were axing production of the 3-row crossover utility vehicle (CUV) along with the Dodge Grand Caravan, with no plans for a replacement. However, there were rumors of a revamped Dodge Journey even before the announcement. So, fans were sure of the Journey’s return, even if it did so wearing a different badge.

As it turned out, the rumors were true. Indeed, the Journey was on a return trip, and it wasn't trailed by its predecessors. The 2022 Dodge Journey is something very different. Its design is based on the GAC-made compact crossover - the Trumpchi GS5 . Behold the all-new, redesigned 2022 Dodge Journey, specially built for passenger comfort and safety until the journey is over. Do you wonder why FCA quit the Journey in the first place? Here’s a glaring one. With features like a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine churning out a boring 173hp in what is supposed to be a 7-passenger, long trip vehicle, the Journey couldn't keep up with the competition for at least the past ten years. So, what does it look like under the hood of the reborn 2022 Journey? Let’s start from there.

The 2022 Dodge Journey Offers Great Power And Performance

Beneath the hood of the Journey sits a 1.5L turbo 4-cylinder engine. What does this mean for the power and performance of the 2022 Dodge Journey?

It seems not such a thrilling improvement on the 2019 Dodge Journey, except that the 1.5L comes with the BorgWarner electronically controlled actuator alongside the 2nd-gen Bosch high-pressure injection system. The result of this combo is a Dodge Journey with improved fuel economy, combustion stability, and lower emission.

The BorgWarner is a low-inertia turbocharger specifically built to assist low viscosity oil while operating at low noise and vibration. So, what this means for the Journey’s performance is that the prayers of fans who wished for an end to the boredom of a slower-than-expected crossover utility vehicle have been answered.

The turbo-rated gas-powered engine ensures more boost when throttled while also delivering better fuel economy than its predecessor with a 2.4L engine. The 1.5L engine is tied to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission. The Aisin lends its prowess to fuel efficiency, adaptive intelligence control, and fast reaction shifting.

The motor is capable of 169 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Honestly, the absence of a V6 engine in the 2022 Journey makes one wonder if this China-built CUV is meant to have children, or will the Journey be discontinued again? The most-likely prediction is that the rumors of an in-development model based on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio are true.

The 2022 Journey is not targeted at the US market. The GAC/Stellantis partnership exports the rebadged vehicle to the Mexican market. We know the market gets the Journey in three trims- SXT, Sport, and GT. These three offer enough options for the various customer driving needs.

With the GT, customers can expect a Journey with enhanced speeding and endurance capabilities for long-distance driving. While the "Sport" speaks for itself, the consensus on the SXT is Standard eXTra, which means the SXT trim is right there between entry-level and frontline capabilities.

The 2022 Dodge Journey Has Great Design Upgrades

"It's about time," is your first thought the first time you see the 2022 Dodge Journey, we guarantee it. The Journey was the brand's best-selling vehicle In Mexico for December 2021. It’s like they say, leave it to the Chinese. The China-built 2022 Dodge Journey is significantly better looking than the previous one.

You’re looking at a modernized and future-proofed front fascia. The grille is larger, even larger than the Trumpchi GS5's the new Dodge is based on. The grille also sports a sleeker aesthetic. The interior is fitted with high-quality, soft-touch materials with an overall look that outmatches the Journey's predecessor.

You can get the new Journey in bright blue, shiny copper, silver, white, glossy black, and granite colors. That’s a lot of color palettes to pick from.

Should we whine over the lack of a V6 engine when it's obvious the makers of this vehicle went all out on passenger safety and affordability? Affordability has always been the Journey's selling point, and the 2022 model does not veer off that road.

On top of that, the vehicle features plenty of bells and whistles like a rearview camera display in the upgraded infotainment system, anti-lock brakes, 360 degreescamera, remote start, skid control, and stability control. The infotainment display comes in different sizes depending on the trim; 7-inch in the SXT/Sport trims and 12.3-inch in the GT trim level. The 2022 Journey GT is actually the first Dodge to field a display screen of that size and techno-ambiance.

The GT also sports a digital instrument cluster, while the SXT and Sport trims get an analog instrument cluster with a digital LCD screen. All trim levels get an 8-inch central touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capabilities.

Now, for cargo space, you get plenty of storage room in the new Journey; It's a bonafide family car. We hear the Journey goes for $555,900 MXN (approx. $28,250 USD) to $645,900 MXN (approx. $32,825 USD) in Mexico depending on the trim.

After more than a decade on the US market, the Dodge Journey is still playing the same old song, with very few new notes added during that time. While this does set it quite a bit behind more modern rival midsize SUVs, it also means that the Dodge doesn't ask for as much of an investment, making it very appealing to budget shoppers. However, those with value in mind will be put off by the lack of smartphone integration or advanced safety features like blind spot monitoring. Where the Journey does manage to remain competitive is its passenger space and affordability, but this is offset by terrible cargo space and subpar fuel economy. Against extremely capable competitors like the Kia Sorento and Honda Pilot , the Dodge Journey just doesn't have the kind of appeal it needs to survive the new decade, especially now that it only offers the weaker 173-horsepower four-cylinder engine.

What’s the Price of the Dodge Journey?

With the simplification of the available trim and equipment levels on the 2020 Journey, shopping around has become a lot simpler. The SE Value remains the base model, now at a starting MSRP of $23,495. The only remaining upgrade is the Crossroad, which pushes the price up to $28,595. The all-wheel drivetrain is no longer offered, so this is where the base-level options end. There are still a number of available packages, but any way you look at it, the Dodge Journey is one of the most affordable SUVs on the market. These prices exclude tax, registration, licensing, and Dodge's $1,495 destination charge.

Handling and Driving Impressions

Few vehicles age very well, with most undergoing midlife updates just three or four years into their production cycle. The Journey is now more than ten years old, and it really feels its age. It handles like a rickety old man on roller skates when on the move, to be honest. The steering is imprecise and uncommunicative, with terrible on-center feel. Combine this with the SUV's extreme weight, and it certainly isn't designed to take a corner faster than a Rascal. At low speed or around parking lots, the Journey actually feels manageable.

The brakes follow the same trend as the steering, being quite effective at lower speeds around town, but they struggle to get traction at top speed. But as disconcerting as this may be, the Journey's handling is even more unsettling. Body roll is a serious issue, and the Dodge simply doesn't grip the road as firmly as it needs to.

All-in-all, maybe we should be grateful that the Journey only has the puny four-cylinder engine available. At low speeds around town, the crossover doesn't feel as horribly incompetent as it is, but go any faster, and it delivers a harrowing experience. And you can't even take comfort in the seats, as ride comfort is mediocre at best, and unpleasant most of the time.

Verdict: Is the new Dodge Journey A Good crossover?

Some people say the journey is more important than the destination, but in the case of the Dodge Journey, that simply isn't the case. Looking back to a time when Oprah was still telling us her favorite things, maybe this SUV would have made her list, but it's well past its prime now. Over more than 10 years, very few changes have been made to keep it relevant, so against ultra-modern crossovers like the Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander, the Dodge simply can't compete.

Yes, the Journey is quite spacious inside, at least where passengers are concerned, but the sub-par materials and poor ride quality mean that no amount of space will actually make you comfortable. When you then consider that the standard trunk space is abysmal, the SUV just doesn't feel like a good family-centric daily driver.

The Dodge may have a low base price, but most rivals ask for just a few thousand dollars more and give you a lot more. The Journey has no smartphone integration, onboard Wi-Fi, or any advanced driver-assistance features worth mentioning. Add to this the now almost antique engine under the hood, and the crossover simply doesn't look like a good value proposition. So, no, we don't think that the Dodge Journey is a good car.

What Dodge Journey Model Should I Buy?

With even fewer choices this year, it really comes down to whether you want the most economical or the most well-equipped of the two very basic specs. But when you look at just how bare-bones the SE Value is, even with its Popular Equipment Group, it's hard to justify the purchase for how much you get. The automatic climate control, six-way power front seats, and larger infotainment display on the Crossroad are hard to pass up. You may still want to spring for the Popular Equipment Group for the navigation and heated front seats, but if you want to keep your final price below $30k, then you can probably do without it, especially since rear park assist is now standard on all configurations.

2020 Dodge Journey Comparisons

Only slightly younger than the Journey, the Dodge Durango occupies a segment one position higher than its little brother. It still offers seating for seven passengers, but it has quite a bit more cargo space in the 17.2-cubic-foot trunk. It also gets a far more competent powertrain lineup with the standard V6 engine delivering 293 hp and 260 lb-ft, while the available V8 puts out 360 hp and a whopping 390 lb-ft. It certainly feels sprier on the road, getting up to speed in around six seconds. The Durango has also made more effort to stay modern, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto coming standard, while blind spot monitoring, forward collision alert, and rear cross-traffic alert are available. It may cost a bit more than the Journey, but with all this extra value, the Durango is still the better deal at $30,495 MSRP.

2020 Dodge Journey vs Kia Sorento

Another seven-seater SUV in the midsize segment, the Kia Sorento is a capable and affordable rival to the Journey. And while the Kia may be a little smaller, it still supplies usable second-row seats and a slightly larger 11.3-cubic-foot trunk. But this is the only area where it is actually comparable to the Dodge Journey. When it comes to standard tech, the Sorento is in a whole other league, with a modern infotainment suite that supports smartphone integration, and plenty of available safety features like forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and a surround-view camera. Add to this a choice of two engines, including a very capable 290-hp V6, and the Kia Sorento leaves the Dodge Journey in the dust like the fossil it is.
