Wicked

Even if you don’t consider yourself to be very well-versed in the world of musical theatre, chances are you will have heard of Wicked. Inspired by Gregory Maguire’s novel of the same name, which was published in 1995, it premiered on Broadway on October 30th, 2003, after a successful run in San Francisco earlier in the year. The original Broadway cast was made up of musical legends: Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, and Idina Menzel – of Frozen fame – starring as Elphaba.

Wicked is a Broadway musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. It is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, itself a retelling of the classic 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and the 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film The Wizard of Oz.

One of the reasons that Wicked is so popular is the sheer scale of its production. It has been at the  Gershwin Theatre  on West 51st Street in the Paramount Plaza building in midtown Manhattan since its Broadway debut in 2003. The theatre has the largest seating capacity on Broadway with almost two thousand seats, and Wicked is regularly sold out thanks to its international reputation as one of the top shows to see in NYC. The theatre was designed in an art nouveau style by Ralph Alswang and opened in 1972 as the Uris Theatre before being renamed to honor the Gershwins in 1983. The set is bold, bright – and very, very green.

Gershwin-Theater-stage

Wicked is a retelling of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L Frank Baum, from the point of view of the witches who live in the Land of Oz. It follows Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda, later known as Glinda the Good Witch, and tells the story of how they met at school, their initial rivalry and dislike of each other, and their eventual friendship before Elphaba’s fall from grace. Although Elphaba and Galinda have a love interest in common, Fiyero, the musical is more interested in themes of friendship, what being ‘wicked’ really means, and understanding other people’s perspectives and motivations.

Wicked The Musical

The original cast album won a  Grammy Award  and was nominated for ten  Tony Awards , eventually winning three, including Best Actress for Menzel. Composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz bought the rights to Maguire’s novel in 1998; although it isn’t an entirely faithful adaptation, Schwartz collaborated with writer  Winnie Holzman  to create a plot that worked onstage. The musical developed through a series of readings with Chenoweth alongside Stephanie J Block as Elphaba. Menzel joined the production in 2000 along with Joe Mantello as director. Wicked is one of Broadway’s most beloved productions: its scope is epic and its production is huge, glittering, and mesmerizing, but more than that, it is a story that is at its heart about love, truth, and friendship – and those are qualities that audiences will always respond to.

Wicked On Broadway

The first act begins as the people of Oz rejoice after the death of Elphaba as Glinda the Good Witch takes center stage. Then the show moves back in time to depict Elphaba’s birth, her relationship with her disabled sister Nessarose and her time at school with Galinda, where they were roommates and rivals. Elphaba’s magical talent is discovered, Prince Fiyero appears, and Galinda and Elphaba become friends before traveling together to meet the Wizard of Oz. There, they discover corruption on an epic scale, and Elphaba runs away after swearing to take her revenge on the Wizard. In the second act, we discover she has been nicknamed the Wicked Witch of the West, while Galinda – now Glinda – has been placed in public opposition to her. When Dorothy reaches the land of Oz, things get even more complicated…

Wicked Acts

Wicked is packed with catchy melodies and onstage antics, but it is hard to argue that the heart of the story lies with the development of the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, from What Is This Feeling? too Popular to their last duet, For Good, arguably the most tear-jerking and emotional part of the entire show. The musical is full of spectacle, color, vibrant costumes, and funny lines, but the end of the first act is probably the most visually stunning as Elphaba sings Defying Gravity, the most famous song in the show, and rises slowly into the air. The high notes will send a shiver down your spine.

Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo 'poured our hearts' into the musical movie magic of 'Wicked'

wicked in tour

LAS VEGAS – Ariana Grande was obviously bedecked in pink, Cynthia Erivo wore green and the two stars of "Wicked" worked their magic on a bunch of theater owners for what could be this year's biggest holiday movie.

"This whole experience is absolutely impossible to put into words," Grande said Wednesday during a presentation for "Wicked" (in theaters Nov. 27) at CinemaCon , the conference for movie theaters and studios.

Director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt introduced a four-minute extended trailer for the highly anticipated Broadway stage adaptation and "Wizard of Oz" prequel. Elphaba (Erivo), aka the woman who's not yet the Wicked Witch of the West, comes to Shiz University and butts heads with popular girl Glinda (Grande).

A social misfit because of her green skin, Elphaba has a ton of potential when it comes to magic, the two very different youngsters foster a budding friendship, and Elphaba takes Glinda with her to Oz when she's summoned by the not-so-wonderful Wizard (Jeff Goldblum). But that's just the beginning of their story, which will be told over two big-budget musical films. The second "Wicked" chapter is scheduled for Nov. 26, 2025.

A dapper Goldblum kicked off the festivities after an opening segment with his giant Oz head. "I’ll be a ring-tailed flying monkey if that’s not the biggest talking cranium that I've seen in all my days," he said. Over his "longish" career, he has been chased by dinosaurs, turned into a fly and gone into the belly of an alien spaceship, "but I've never been part of the particular flavor of magic as this movie."

Michelle Yeoh, who plays Shiz headmistress Madame Morrible, reunited with her "Crazy Rich Asians" director Chu for "Wicked." "Jon even got me to sing in this movie. It was terrifying," Yeoh confessed. Chu responded, "You played a literal rock in a movie, so I had to give you some challenge."

But Grande and Erivo get the cowardly lion's share of belting in this movie, including favorites like "Popular" and the showstopper "Defying Gravity." The two reminisced about when they first were exposed to "Wicked": Grande was 10 when she first saw it on Broadway, and Erivo said she took herself on a "date" to see it, "and I couldn’t fathom actually getting to play the Wicked Witch."

Elphaba and Glinda are "two roles that have been so pivotal in our lives and meant the most to us," Erivo said. Grande added that both felt the responsibility and “poured our hearts, our souls, so many lashes, wands, and we gave it all we possibly could."

Platt, a producer on the original stage production of "Wicked" that debuted in 2003, feels the characters will have an "indelible and profound impact on audiences for years to come." Chu added that his two stars "more than lived up to every demand. You, your kids and your kids' kids will adore them from now on."

Peter Dinklage cast as the voice of Doctor Dillamond in 'Wicked'

One other "Wicked" note: "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage was revealed as the voice of Doctor Dillamond in the movie musical. His voice was heard during the extended trailer that played during the CinemaCon presentation. Other supporting actors in the cast include Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James and Keala Settle.

In the movie (and the Broadway stage production), Dillamond is a goat and professor of history at Shiz University who warns Elphaba of gathering dark forces conspiring against talking animals in Oz.

In the film adaptation of the Broadway musical phenomenon, Dr. Dillamond, a goat, is a professor of history at Shiz University who warns Elphaba about rising dark forces that threaten the speaking animals of Oz, including himself.

Wicked will be released in two parts as Thanksgiving events on November 27, 2024, and Noember 26, 2025.

The Jon M. Chu-directed, Marc Platt-produced movie follows the untold story of the young witches of Oz. Elphaba is misunderstood because of her unusual green skin and has yet to discover her true power, while Glinda, who is quite popular and gilded by privilege and ambition, has yet to discover her true heart.

The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz ultimately will see them fulfill their respective destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Read the conversation Grande herself posted on her Instagram Stories about her latest album.

Grande capped off 2023 by reflecting on Instagram about how much playing Glinda (originally Galinda) in the film changed her life. Grande spent most of the year filming Wicked .

The last year was “one of the most transformative, most challenging, and yet happiest and most special years of my life,” she said. “There were so many beautiful and yet polarized feelings. I’ve never felt more at the mercy of and in acceptance of what life was screaming to teach me. I’ve never felt more fulfilled by or present in my work, being able to cherish every moment.”

She added, “I have everything I could have possibly given of my heart and of myself to the projects I was fortunate enough to be a part of and learned so much from every brilliant, beautiful, soul that I had the privilege of creating art with and crossing paths with...I have never felt more pride or joy or love while simultaneously feeling so deeply misunderstood by people who don't know me, who piece whispers together and make what they want out of me and their assumptions of my life.”

“I am so eternally grateful for all of the feelings I was lucky enough to feel so deeply this year. Mine and Galinda’s alike,” she wrote toward the end of her Instagram Story. “The unfathomably hard ones and the inexplicably happy ones. I feel more human than ever. I feel more deeply than ever. I feel softer and stronger, all at once.”

Wicked Reveals the Big Riff

Portrait of Jason P. Frank

Good news! She’s deaaaaaaaad actually alive. Over a decade after the production team on the freakishly successful Broadway musical began meeting with filmmakers back in 2010 , a Wicked movie is actually being released in 2024. While those early meetings reportedly included potential directors like Rob Marshall (boring!), Ryan Murphy (but he would want Lea Michele ), and J.J. Abrams (the sci-fi boy?), Stephen Daldry was officially hired, with a December 2019 release date set back in 2016 . Obviously, this did not occur. Cats got that release date instead, and that went great . Then, Jon M. Chu of Crazy Rich Asians , Step Up 2: The Streets , and In the Heights fame took over as director in 2021. Since then, the film has been positively dancing through life, releasing new cast updates regularly and starting production to be not just one but two films that actually exist, against all odds. And thanks to the Super Bowl, we have our first look at an official first look. Below, everything you need to know about these soon-to-be popular movies, coming out in 2024 and 2025.

Let’s start with the official first look for Wicked .

Our first look at the first of two Wicked films is only one minute long, but it still manages to show us: Ariana Grande being scared, Cynthia Erivo’s incredible manicure, flying monkeys, literal yellow bricks, a bubble, Michelle Yeoh, and one big riff.

Wait, films, as in plural?

Yeah, films . After years of no Wicked movie, we’re getting two Wicked movies. Wickeds ? Wicki ? Wickeople ? “As we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of WICKED into a single film without doing some real damage to it,” Chu said in a statement posted to social media on April 26, 2022. “So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one WICKED movie but TWO!!!!” Okay, so … why? “We found it very difficult to get past ‘Defying Gravity’ without a break,” Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz said in an email newsletter in June of 2022 . “That song is written specifically to bring a curtain down, and whatever scene to follow it without a break just seemed hugely anti-climactic.” Plus, it was going to be very long, and “it required us cutting or omitting things that we wanted to include and that we think fans of the show and the story will appreciate.” Look, if it means that the Act Two opener “No One Mourns the Wicked (Reprise)” will actually get a track after it was tacked onto “Thank Goodness” in the original cast recording, then we will take it! Or, as Ben Affleck, king of Boston, would say: That would be wicked.

Who’s in the cast?

Well, here’s the goooood newwwwwsss. Our “Dear Old Shiz” alumni will be played by Tony winner Cynthia Erivo and Grammy winner and theater-geek-at-large Ariana Grande, playing Elphaba and Glinda (formerly Galinda), respectively. Also in the cast are Bridgerton star and Olivier Award winner Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero and Tony nominee Ethan Slater as Boq. Michelle Yeoh will be the film’s Madame Morrible. Marissa Bode will be playing Elphaba’s sister Nessarose, a notable departure from the stage version, as Bode is a person with a disability. The Broadway version of the show has solely cast non-disabled actors for the wheelchair-bound role. SNL star and Emmy nominee Bowen Yang will play Pfannee, one of Galinda’s friends, alongside Bronwyn James as ShenShen. Tony nominee Keala Settle, Aaron Teoh, and Colin Michael Carmichael are playing Miss Coddle, Avaric, and Nikidik, respectively. Jeff Goldblum is set to play the Wizard. Until recently Dr. Dillamond, adult goat and singer of “Something Bad,” was without an actor. Instead, the role is currently being played by a puppeteer, Yang revealed on an episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen . The puppeteer (named Louisa) “has been doing amazing line reads,” according to Yang. After much speculation , the GOAT goat was revealed to be Peter Dinklage . Moving forward, we must say to Mr. Jon M. Chu that, as long as you stay away from casting the enemy of restaurateurs , we’re happy.

What does it look like?

You don’t need to have a vision almost like a prophecy to see what the Wicked movie is going to look like. Instead, we have a few first look images to choose from that can foretell all kinds of different looks for the film, depending on what you want to see. The most official of the group were a set of character pics tweeted out by Chu, showing Elphaba and Galinda with shrouded backdrops. Some people on Twitter made fun of these pics for the cinematography being too dark , but Chu himself responded, saying , “Don’t worry, color is in my DNA … this is just the first tease. Plenty of time to show more … stay tuned.”

Other on-set shots already look, to quote a different former Chenoweth vehicle, a whole lot brighter . Shots from the set that weren’t technically released through official sources show brightly colored sets and a pretty-in-pink Ari walking through Munchkinland. This even included a video shared by Entertainment Tonight, in which you can see and hear a ponytail-less Grande in full pink getup singing her high notes from the opening song. What the cinematography will look like, no one can say. But it would be a shame not to show off the vibrant colors they’ve got going on.

When’s the release date?

Originally, both films were going to be released on Christmas Days. However, Chu tweeted out on March 14 that the first film is defying gravity, because the release date was actually moved up . “We are deep into production on WICKED and everyday we get more and more excited to share with u the mischief we’ve been up to,” the director said. “So … We’ve decided to get it to you all a little earlier than planned. OUR NEW RELEASE Date is NOV 27th 2024! A little Thanksgiving treat!” The second film was originally scheduled for release on Christmas 2025, but now it’s being bumped up. On June 20, Warner Bros. revealed that, in line with the first film, the sequel will be out over Thanksgiving 2025 (specifically, November 26), according to The Hollywood Reporter . That’s less than two short years before we get a Wicked film, and we might as well start yelling about it now. AAAAAAAAH!
