Stay Classy, San Diego: Explore the Locations of Anchorman 2 and Other Film Classics
From Anchorman to Top Gun to Some Like It Hot, San Diego has been the backdrop for many classic films and offers great locations for film buffs to explore.
Funnyman Will Ferrell's return as the fictional, yet legendary, San Diego news reporter Ron Burgundy is sure to have audiences in stitches in December 2013 when Anchorman: The Legend Continues opens in movie theaters nationwide. In the original Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy , the city of San Diego starred as the playground for Burgundy and his Channel 4 news crew, and Ron's hometown is happy to welcome him back in this new sequel.
Fortunately for film buffs, many San Diego locations have played important roles in film history from Anchorman to Top Gun to Some Like It Hot . The following are just a few of the film classics featuring San Diego settings where visitors can walk in the footsteps of Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise, Marilyn Monroe and the master filmmaker Orson Welles.
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) / Anchorman: The Legend Continues (2013)
Fans of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy know the importance of the "Panda Watch," so visitors to San Diego who want to follow in Ron's footsteps won't want to miss the world-famous San Diego Zoo and their equally famous cast of endangered pandas. Other San Diego sites in the original Anchorman to visit include Balboa Park, which has been seen in a number of notable films, and downtown's picturesque waterfront. SeaWorld San Diego, another of the area's most popular attractions, will make a big splash in the sequel according to insider sources.
Almost Famous (2000)
San Diego's laid-back community of Ocean Beach with its 1970s hippie attitude and the San Diego Sports Arena, where some of the nation's top musical acts toured in years past, play leading roles in Almost Famous , a comedy-drama written by former San Diegan Cameron Crowe. This semi-autographical, coming-of-age story is about a teenage journalist who writes for Rolling Stone magazine while covering a fictitious rock band; Crowe himself had been a teenage writer for Rolling Stone as well as a former music critic for the San Diego Union daily newspaper.
Top Gun (1986)
Inspired by a magazine article that highlighted the TOPGUN fighter pilots at the Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, movie producers were intrigued by the fast-paced Navy pilot lifestyle in a laid-back Southern California beach town and set up shop in San Diego to film the blockbuster hit Top Gun . Guests can visit the home where Kelly McGillis' character, Charlie, lived, located in Oceanside in San Diego's North County and known locally as the famous " Top Gun House." Kansas City Barbecue in downtown San Diego is a must-see for any Top Gun fan; it served as the backdrop for some of the movie's popular bar scenes. Chances are visitors won't spot Tom Cruise or Kelly McGillis flirting by the jukebox or belting out "That Loving Feeling" at the piano, but mementos, autographed posters and photos from the film are proudly on display.
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! (1978)
This goofy cult classic about mutant tomatoes that eat people was filmed entirely in San Diego at locations ranging from SDCCU Stadium, home of the San Diego Chargers, to a local high school. When a few scenes filmed on the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) campus called for the movie's scientists to wear lab coats, filmmakers "borrowed" lab coats from some of the empty UCSD offices. The majestic Star of India, the world's oldest merchant sailing vessel still in operation, also played a role in the movie; today, visitors can walk the decks of this historic ship at the Maritime Museum of San Diego, set along downtown's picturesque waterfront.
Some Like It Hot (1959)
Since 1888, the landmark Hotel del Coronado, located on the "island" of Coronado just across from downtown San Diego, has attracted numerous world dignitaries, Hollywood stars and discriminating, affluent travelers with its unique red-peaked roof, stunning Victorian architecture and serene ocean vistas. Many film buffs know the iconic property as the backdrop for the wildly popular Billy Wilder comedy classic Some Like it Hot , featuring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. The hotel also was seen in a variety of other popular films like The Stunt Man (1980) starring Peter O'Toole and Barbara Hershey and My Blue Heaven (1990) with Steve Martin and Rick Moranis.
Citizen Kane (1941)
Often referred to as the "Smithsonian of the West" for its 16 museums and numerous cultural offerings, Balboa Park's beautiful gardens and striking Spanish Colonial Revival architecture have made appearances in a number of popular movies over the decades. Most notable is its part in Orson Welles' film masterpiece Citizen Kane , where the Spanish Colonial Revival buildings served as Charles Kane's magnificent mansion, "Xanadu." In Almost Famous , the beautiful California Bell Tower, located above the San Diego Museum of Man in Balboa Park, turns up in the San Diego-based film, while the park's historic Organ Pavilion was used to stage an explosion during the film Top Dog (1995) starring action star Chuck Norris.
Happiness is calling in San Diego. For more information on San Diego's offerings, including exciting vacation packages and valuable coupons for attractions, restaurants and more, visit the San Diego Tourism Authority's website at www.sandiego.org or call 619-236-1212.

Interview with judd apatow on anchorman: the legend of ron burgundy.
By RON DONOHO
Photo of Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann
Judd Apatow with wife Leslie Mann at the Berlin premiere of So This is 40, earlier this year.
Producer/director/screenwriter Judd Apatow makes sidesplitting, occasionally raunchy Hollywood movies: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad, Pineapple Express, Bridesmaids,
and more. He’ll receive the Visionary Filmmaker award during the San Diego Film Festival (October 2–6). He chats with San Diego Magazine about coming to Comic-Con, his favorite Anchorman one-liners, and which famous friends might show up with him.
How were you persuaded to appear at the San Diego Film Festival? Jeffrey Lyons asked me to do it. I’m a longtime admirer of his movie reviews. We’ll do a Q&A, and talk about my ridiculous work.
How often do you come down here from L.A.? I’ve been down for Comic-Con a few times. I’ve vacationed with the family at the Hotel del Coronado. And I performed at The Improv in San Diego when I started out as a comedian in the late 1980s.
Do you dress up as a superhero when you come for Comic-Con? I haven’t had to dress up. I feel bad for famous people I know who can’t wander around without wearing a mask. We’ve done movie panels at Comic-Con. I’m in heaven at a place like that. I was into the comic-book culture as a kid and didn’t have anybody to share it with.
Will your wife, Leslie Mann, who played the lovely puking drunk lady in The Forty-Year-Old Virgin , come to the festival with you? That’s a good question. It depends what the family is up to. Sometimes they get very interested in what I’m doing and sometimes they don’t care at all.
What do your daughters, Maude and Iris, who were in So This Is 40 , Funny People , and Knocked Up , like about San Diego? There is a famous ghost who lives in the Hotel Del. That seems to be their primary focus.
Will you persuade film industry friends (hint: Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd) to come to our film festival? It’s like every time Scorcese does a speech for De Niro, you know De Niro has to do a speech for Scorcese. You never know who will show up to these things. We’ll see who’s around.
Why was Anchorman set in San Diego? Will Ferrell and Adam McKay wrote that movie. They wanted a friendly city that wasn’t enormous like New York. An interesting, medium-sized market for Ron Burgundy to work in. And, of course, Simon & Simon was shot in San Diego, which is important.
In Anchorman, Will Ferrell’s title character explains that San Diego means “a whale’s vagina.” Who came up with that line? They do improvise quite a bit, but I think that joke was in Will and Adam’s original script.
What’s your favorite line or scene from Anchorman ? I like when Will says, “Milk was a bad choice.” I’m also par- tial to: “I’m in a glass case of emotions.”
The sequel comes out in December. Does San Diego just get the one SeaWorld scene? I can’t give away any secrets.
If there’s an Anchorman 3 , can you have Ron Burgundy come home to San Diego? We could make these movies when the characters are 50, 60, 70, or 80 years old. Anchor people hold on for a long time. I’d be surprised if this is the last time for Ron Burgundy and his crew.
Are you expecting a ceremonial key to the city from the mayor when you get here? I would not turn that down. I hope somebody’s fighting for that right now.
I hope you get the key, but we’ve had may- oral issues this summer. Maybe Anthony Weiner will be the mayor of San Diego.

Set in a dimly-remembered past, before cable (and before Steve Carell was famous), San Diego newsreader Ron Burgundy ( Will Ferrell ) finds his position threatened by the new-fangled concept of diversity, in the form of a woman newsreader, Veronica Corningstone ( Christina Applegate ).
Although it’s set in San Diego – and there’s a scattering of establishing shots throughout – there’s very little of the actual city. Most of the film was shot in Los Angeles , mainly to the south of the city around the around the Long Beach area. The Channel 4 news station, though, was a set built up in the Valley, inside Seeley Furniture Warehouse, 1800 South Brand Avenue , in Glendale .
The opening shot of Burgundy’s ’copter touching down in front of the (fictitious) ‘Esquire Hotel’ shows the cylindrical International Tower, Long Beach (which you’ll probably recognise from Lethal Weapon and both versions of Gone In 60 Seconds ).
The C4 news team confront their hated rivals from Channel 9, led by Wes Mantooth ( Vince Vaughn ) in Shoreline Aquatic Park , Shoreline Way at Aquarium Way in Long Beach . To be fair, the Shoreline Village complex in the background does look a little bit like San Diego ’s Hotel Del Coronado (the hotel seen in Some Like It Hot ). On their way to cheer themselves up with new suits, the team makes the mistake of taking a short cut through a bad part of town. Waylaid by four rival news teams, they fight a bloody battle on Mateo Street at East 4th Place , beneath the western end of the 4th Street Bridge , east of downtown Los Angeles .
Ron misses a broadcast after an irate biker ( Jack Black ) kicks his beloved doggy Baxter into the sea. The bridge from which the unfortunate pooch gets launched is supposed to be the 1.2 mile San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge , linking San Diego to Coronado Island . This is seen in long shot, but the scene is actually staged south of Long Beach , on Queens Way Bridge , at the end of Magnolia Avenue .
Ron finds himself sacked after Veronica tampers with his teleprompter and, for a moment, we really are in San Diego as he walks disconsolately in Balboa Park , 1549 El Prado .
The park’s ornate buildings can be seen in Orson Welles ’s Citizen Kane (as part of Kane’s Xanadu estate) and in the opening San Diego scenes of Cameron Crowe ’s Almost Famous . Going off the rails, Ron hits the milk, and gets snubbed by his old chums on West 6th Street , between South Mesa and South Centre Streets, in San Pedro .
Incidentally, this this is the street that was turned into downtown ‘Honolulu’ for Michael Bay ’s Pearl Harbor .
‘San Diego Zoo’, where panda Ling Wong gives birth and Ron is finally redeemed, is the old Los Angeles zoo on Crystal Springs Drive in Griffith Park , about a mile south of the current zoological park.
When the current Los Angeles Zoo opened in the 1960s about a mile to the north, the former zoo was abandoned and later converted into a picnic area. It’s located in a canyon just north of the merry-go-round, on the east side of Griffith Park .

Padres introduce 'Anchorman' race at Petco Park, Ron Burgundy wins inaugural running
Channel 4 news team assemble.
We know about the racing sausages in Milwaukee and racing presidents in D.C., and now it's time to add perhaps the best race in MLB to the list: The Anchorman race in San Diego.
The Padres , in collaboration with Paramount pictures and the actors from "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," have created the Anchorman race. So great. As fans of the movie know, it's set in San Diego and we'll just let it so unsaid what Ron thinks the name of the city means.
We've got Ron Burgundy himself, sports anchor Champ Kind, field reporter Brian Fantana and weatherman Brick Tamland. The inaugural race:
NEWS TEAM ASSEMBLE! Introducing Anchorman races at @PetcoPark with the Channel 4 news team: Ron Burgundy, Champ Kind, Brian Fantana and Brick Tamland! pic.twitter.com/gShWiohnhX — San Diego Padres (@Padres) March 30, 2019
Ron definitely had to win the first one. It feels like there's potential for a long drought for Brick here, no? It would be cool to mix in him getting distracted easily by nondescript things, too.
Per the Padres, this race won't be every single home game. It will "primarily take place on the weekends and special games."
This is all well and good and I love the idea, but where is Veronica Corningstone? Maybe after Brick has gone 0 for something like three years, Veronica appears to take out the rest of the field and free Brick? That's the direction if I'm in charge, but she has to make an appearance at some point, even if Champ might have some thoughts about it .

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, or simply Anchorman, is a 2004 comedy film directed by Adam McKay, produced by Judd Apatow, starring Will Ferrell, and written by McKay and Ferrell. The film is a tongue-in-cheek take on the culture of the 1970s, particularly the news Action News format. It portrays a San Diego TV station where Ferrell's title character clashes with his new female counterpart. A companion film assembled from outtakes and abandoned subplots, titled Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie, was released straight-to-DVD in late 2004. A sequel, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, was released on December 18, 2013.

Tour of Romandie win is career-best title for Carlos Rodriguez through rain-slicked final stage

Carlos Rodriguez protected his yellow jersey through a rain-soaked final stage Sunday to win the six-day Tour of Romandie for the biggest race victory of his career.
Four previous winners in the French-speaking region of Switzerland went on to win that season’s Tour de France, including Chris Froome in 2013. Rodriguez placed fifth in cycling’s marquee event last year and won a stage.
Rodriguez started Sunday’s flat stage that looped round the suburbs of Geneva — won in a sprint finish by Dorian Godon — with a seven-second lead he took by placing third in a mountain stage Saturday.
The 23-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider kept that winning margin over runner-up Aleksandr Vlasov, the 2022 Romandie winner. Third-placed Florian Lipowitz was third, trailing Rodriquez by nine seconds.
Godon sealed his second stage win this week, edging Simone Consonni with Dion Smith third.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A pair of giant pandas will soon make the journey from China to the U.S., where they will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo as part of an ongoing conservation partnership between the two nations, officials said Monday.
The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said its caretakers recently visited China to meet the giant pandas, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, ahead of their planned trip to Southern California. An exact date for the handoff hasn’t been set.
Yun Chuan, a mild-mannered male who’s nearly 5 years old, has “deep connections” to California, the wildlife alliance said. His mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at the San Diego Zoo in 2007 to parents Bai Yun and Gao Gao.
Xin Bao is a nearly 4-year-old female described as “a gentle and witty introvert with a sweet round face and big ears.”
“Our conservation partners in China shared photographs and personality traits of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, but meeting them in person was so special,” said Dr. Megan Owen, the alliance’s vice president of conservation science. “It’s inspiring as people from around the world come together to conserve, protect, and care for these special bears, and we can’t wait to welcome them to San Diego.”
The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has a nearly 30-year partnership with leading conservation institutions in China focused on protecting and recovering giant pandas and the bamboo forests they depend on.
