So, come join us and uncover the untold stories of this legendary figure!
- Poenari Castle - the real castle of Dracula
- Snagov monastery - Dracula's grave
- Bran Castle
If you arrive on DAY 1 of the tour we can pick you up from Bucharest Airport. Explore Bucharest – the city became the capital of Wallachia during the reign of Vlad the Impaler, AKA Dracula
Visit the ruins of the Old Court of Bucharest – the real residence of our famous prince – Vlad Dracula
Dinner in the historic center of Bucharest
Overnight in 4**** Hotel in Bucharest.
As proof that Dracula’s spirit still lives in Romania, we will visit the Parliament Palace – a megalomaniac’s work of art. This is the second largest building in the world erected by the Communist leader Ceausescu
Drive to Targoviste, the royal court of Wallachia, until 1459 when Dracula decided to set his royal court in Bucharest. The noblemen of Targoviste supported a different prince on the country's throne, therefore, being hostile to Dracula. This was punished by the newly crowned prince Dracula. All his opponents from Targoviste were arrested on Easter day of 1457 and forced to work as slaves on the construction of the Poenari Fortress – the one we will see on day 3 of the tour.
Spend the night in the little town of Curtea de Arges a few minutes away from the most spectacular castle of Dracula – Poenari
Visit the ruins of Poienari Castle – perched high on a rugged crag over the Arges river gorge. The 1480 stairs lead us to Dracula’s “vulture nest” fortress.
In 1462 Prince Vlad was besieged here by the Turks. He sent to the village of Arefu across the hill for help but his wife, fearful of capture, threw herself into the river far below.
The villagers came at night and smuggled the Prince across the high Carpathian Mountains to Transylvania's safety. In return, he gave them 16 mountains as pastureland, a reward they still remember, more than 500 years later!
Transfagarasan Highway – on our way to Sibiu we will make a 1.5 hours detour on the most spectacular road in Romania, the Transfagarasan highway. The breathtaking road was built in the ’80s by the communists, using over 4000 tons of dynamite in just 4 years. (please note that the road is only open from July to October)
In the evening we arrive in Sighisoara a magnificent living medieval fortress, UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is where Vlad Dracul (the father) lived in exile when his son Vlad Dracula was born.
Dinner at Dracula’s House The very house where the prince was born still exists, and we will have the chance to dine there
We spend the night in the old citadel of Sighisoara in a 400 years old hotel, across the street from Dracula’s birth house.
Explore Sighisoara, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe Vlad Dracul – the father – was appointed governor of Transylvania in 1452 and he based himself in the prosperous citadel of Sighisoara. The princely family is lodged in a large house next to the Clock Tower, and a fresco depicting Vlad Dracul and Sighisoara's major at the time is still visible in the main saloon of the house. This is where our hero, Vlad, is born. You will walk the tiny cobbled streets of Sighisoara. Discover the stories of the 9 towers that still guard the old Sighisoara. Don’t miss the superb panorama from the Clock Tower and the quaint little shops and cafes hidden in centuries-old houses The next stop is the impressive Rasnov Fortress. Erected on a commanding hilltop, 700 years ago, by the Teutonic Knights, the fortress was featured among the 10 snow castles in the world by the prestigious Conde Nast Traveler Overnight in Bran, in a picturesque location.
Visit Bran Castle (1377), the Castle where Bram Stoker placed Count Dracula in his novel – a castle in a pass in the Carpathian Mountains. Legends say that Dracula was imprisoned in this castle after being captured by the Hungarians in 1462. Nevertheless, Bran Castle was a strategic point in that era, and Dracula might have passed many times through the castle, but for sure, it was never his castle.
Brasov a medieval town. As a young fugitive prince, Dracula spent several years in Brasov, an important community whose support was crucial to his return to the throne of the neighboring country, Wallachia (at that time Wallachia and Transylvania were separate countries)
We will explore the main landmarks of Brasov: the impressive Black Church, the narrowest street ever “Rope Street”, the superb Council Square, and the fairy tale Ecaterina Gate. Outside of the city walls, we get to the Black Tower for an amazing view over the old Brasov.
Return to the hotel in Bran.
Snagov Monastery – in 1476 Price Vlad Dracula was killed near Bucharest. The Monks of Snagov Monastery recovered his headless body and buried it inside their church on the little island of Snagov.
Dracula was controversial even after his death. His death is still an enigma, where some sources indicate he was assassinated by the Turks, while others claim that Dracula was killed in a “friendly fire” (complicated story, but you will learn it on the tour)
The tour ends in Bucharest at about 2 PM

Annapurna Base Camp is a Grade B or a moderately difficult trekking route. So any fit person can do this trek, even if you do not have any previous experience. You should be aware of what to expect and mentally prepare for it. Then, as long as you will too, you can.
On average, you walk about 4 to 6 hours per day. One or two days can be as less as 3hrs and one or two days can be as long as 7hrs.
The highest altitude reached is 4190m. This is the elevation of Annapurna Base Camp. ABC is the highest we will climb in this trek.
Yes, you can charge batteries en route. Charger should be brought. There are hot shower facilities as well. You may have to pay a certain amount for both ($1-$2). Negotiate. Also, a hot water facility could be free at a lower elevation.
No. There are no ATMs on this trek route. You will have to draw enough cash in Pokhara or Kathmandu. There are a number of ATMs in these cities. Everything is paid in Nepali rupees. So money should be exchanged before the start of the trek.
Yes. The Internet can be accessed in most places. Sometimes, there might be some technical problems. The Internet in Nepal is not as fast as you are used to and at times you can just lose connection.
Not really. It depends on you. If you want, ABC trekking can be done independently. You could hire a guide and a porter by yourself instead of going through an agency or not hire a guide at all. Although, not having a guide can be a little problematic during the offseason.
It really depends on you. Is it your first time in Nepal? How confident are you of being able to find your way around? How pressed on time are you? If you go through an agency, it will be costlier but everything will be planned. You will only have to come, trek and return.

Reviews from dracula tour goers.
Really enjoyed the Sighisoara party over the Bran castle party on which we participated last year. Great guide, fun trip, great food! Sighisoara hotel was great, but the one at Bran castle was very dated and in need of updates. Overall would give it a 5 rating from 5 possible, loved our trip!
Best Halloween I’ve ever had During the Halloween tour we had 3 different parties in 3 different locations across Transylvania. I highly recommend this tour if you want to learn more about Dracula. Best Halloween ever, and I think the people that I met made it even greater!
I honestly could not have imagined how amazing studying Dracula in Romania would be. Of course, I knew a lot about the literary Dracula and I loved being immersed in the world of the novel. But I had no idea how much I would enjoy the history behind Vlad the Impaler. That was really fascinating for me. I loved going to all the different cities and being immersed in the culture, and it definitely made me much more interested in and open to the information and the stories Stefan was telling us. My favorite part was eating in the house where Dracula was born and Stefan telling us the stories of Vlad the Impaler’s deeds in that room. We did so much in so short a time, and I loved it. Also, Stefan was absolutely amazing and we all adored him. He really made the trip more than we could have ever asked for and he went above and beyond for us at every turn. We’re really thankful to both of you for making this experience so fantastic.

Bucharest City Tour
Breakfast: -
On the first day of your Dracula tour, our tour guide will pick you up at 09:00 AM from your place for a city tour of Bucharest. Our capital is the place where the cultures of Western and Eastern Europe merge beautifully. Beyond this exotic mix, one can undoubtedly feel the inescapable influence of the communist regime.
Your day tour of Bucharest begins with the most distinctive building in the city, dating back to the communist period, the Palace of the Parliament. Also known as the House of the People, the impressive edifice entered the Guinness World Records as the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon. As you step through imposing marble rooms, your tour guide will share with you the grim details that enabled its construction.
Lunch: At your expense
Your day in Bucharest continues with a sightseeing tour of Bucharest's Old Town, which shelters several historical sites, architectural gems and representative buildings. In the surroundings, you can sightsee Curtea Veche (the Old Court), the first royal court in Bucharest and one of Vlad Tepes's residential place. In the middle of the ruins, you can see the bust of Vlad the Impaler.
Dinner: At your expense
Evening: You have the freedom to spend the rest of your evening as you wish
Overnight in Bucharest
Bucharest – Targoviste Royal Court – Poenari Castle - Transfagarasan Highway
Breakfast: At the hotel
The tour from Bucharest continues with a trip to Targoviste, the former capital of Wallachia . Targoviste served as a Saxon colony throughout the 13th century, and due to its economic growth, it became a secondary residence for Wallachian princes during the 14th century.
The Royal court was moved from Curtea de Arges to Târgoviște in 1431, and it was refurbished continuously over the years. The princely court was rather small before Vlad the Impaler restructured it to stand against enemy attacks, later on constructing the Tower of Chindia. In 1395, the city was attacked and set on fire by Bayezid I, and in 1462 the Ottoman invasion was only stopped from reaching the town by Vlad the Impaler's Night Attack.
Targoviste city tour, together with Princely Church and Chindia Tower, is an introduction into the life and background of Vlad Tepes.
*In the wintertime (November to July), the trip to Poenari Castle and Transfagarasan Highway will be replaced with a visit to Curtea de Arges Monastery and overnight in Sibiu.
Next on, you will head to Poenari Fortress built in the 13th century.
It was restored by Vlad the Impaler and became one of his main fortresses. The citadel is located at an altitude of over 800 m, and to reach it, there are more than 1400 steps to climb. Often called Vlad Tepes’s "Eagle's Nest," the fortress has been a strategic point thanks to its location.
*Due to renovations, Poienari Fortress is closed and cannot be visited until 2024
At the end of your day you can admire some stunning landscapes as you travel across the Carpathian Mountains. Transfagarasan Highway goes across Fagaras Mountains, the tallest mountains in Romania, reaching 2042m. From there, spectacular sceneries are visible, and some unique photographs can be taken as there are enchanting landscapes all around.
Your day concludes with arriving at your accommodation in Sibiu. There you can relax and get ready for a new day of you Dracula Tour.
Dinner: At your expense
Overnight in Sibiu
Sibiu City Tour
Sibiu is one of the medieval cities that, more than 600 years ago, the story of Dracula started to spread through the noblemen and merchants that inhabited the city. Meanwhile there, you will visit Astra Museum , an open-air museum that is home to original Romanian monuments. There you can take a ride with a traditional wooden carriage as well. The museum is home to more than 300 traditional buildings and thousands of classic household objects, structured in five large sectors.
For the rest of the day, you will take a Sibiu walking tour to see how the city beautifully blends tradition with multicultural and modern elements. The journey begins in the Main Square of the town and continues with visiting some of the most famous landmarks in Sibiu: Brukenthal Museum, the "Holy Trinity" Roman Catholic Cathedral, and the Huet Square with its Evangelical Church. You will then have a couple of hours to explore the city by yourself to immerse with this gorgeous, historic city. For your free time in Sibiu, we prepared a list of things to do .
Sibiu – Corvin Castle – Sarmizegetusa Regia – Densus – Deva
The fourth day of your Dracula Tour will begin with visiting one of Dracula's castle in Transylvania, Corvin Castle (or Hunyadi Castle). According to the legend, Vlad the Impaler was imprisoned here for seven years. Corvin Castle is one of the largest medieval castles in Eastern Europe. It displays an impressive Renaissance-Gothic architecture, an inner courtyard, and gorgeous soaring towers and bastions. Vlad the Impaler spent his childhood with the future king of Hungary, Mathias Corvin and, Corvin Castle was their home while getting their military education.
You will then head on to Orastie Mountains to visit the ruins of Sarmizegetusa Regia, a famous Dacian fortress. Sarmizegetusa Regia was the leading military, religious and political center of the Dacian Empire 2000 years ago. The fort had residential areas, workshops, and a sacred zone. The sacred zone is one of the most significant Dacian Sanctuaries, its layout being similar to Stonehenge. On the site were discovered seven temples: two round and five rectangular temples and an andesite altar. However, only the foundations of these monuments have been preserved until today.
The guided tour continues with a trip to Densus village. Once there, you will visit Densus Church, considered one of the oldest churches in Romania. The church is supposedly constructed sometimes in the 7th century and the murals inside date from back in the 15th century, portraying Jesus Christ wearing traditional Romanian clothing.
One hypothesis claims that Densus Church was a pagan temple because of the altar that is closer to South than East, the roof that is shaped like a dove, and the lion statues that are united by their tails. Another hypothesis is that the church was built as a mausoleum to the Roman general Longinus Maximus.
Dinner: At the hotel at your expense
Overnight in Deva
Deva – Alba Carolina – Turda Salt Mine – Cluj-Napoca
Your day will begin with a guided tour of Alba Iulia, a city situated at the center of Romania. A famous landmark is Alba Carolina Citadel, the largest medieval citadel in Romania, built between 1715 and 1738. The site was previously home to the other two fortifications: the Roman Castle of Legio XIII Gemina and the Bălgrad Medieval Citadel.
The medieval fortress was part of a fortification system created by Prince Eugene of Savoy designed to ensure the defenses of the newly conquered provinces of the Habsburg Empire. Alba Carolina Citadel is, therefore, one of the most representative Vauban bastion fortifications in Transylvania. It is one of the Roman Empire's main fortifications in the area as well.
The next stop will be at Turda, where you will visit the salt mine that covers an area of almost 45 kilometers. Turda has been used for salt mining for hundreds of years, mentioned for the first time in 1075. Today Turda Salt Mine is a touristic destination being one of the most fascinating underground places in the world. The mine is the perfect location for a fun family trip. Mini-golf, ping pong, bowling, Ferris Wheel rides, boat rides on the underground lake, all these entertainment activities are available at Turda Mine.
Overnight in Cluj Napoca
Cluj-Napoca – Biertan church – Sighisoara
You will depart from Cluj and head to Biertan Fortified Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is located in a nearby Saxon village. Surrounded by three tall defensive walls, the church dates back from the 13th century and features a late-gothic architecture, representing a stunning medieval masterpiece.
The guided tour continues with the medieval citadel of Sighisoara, the only inhabited medieval fortress in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Take a walk along the fortress's winding cobblestone streets lined with historical buildings until you reach the Clock Tower, the symbol of the city. The tower is home to a well preserved medieval weapon museum and a torture chamber. The citadel was built in the 12th century and further fortified in the 15th century.
For those interested in Dracula's birth, Sighisoara medieval citadel is known to be the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. In this small town of Transylvania, in the house of Vlad Dracul, his son Vlad spent the first years of his life. Therefore, you will have time to visit the place where the ruthless Wallachian ruler lived the first years of his life.
Overnight in Sighisoara
Sighisoara – Brasov – Bran Castle – Snagov Monastery
The first destination for the day is the city of Brasov . Once there, you will take a city tour to discover some of Brasov's numerous attractions. You will go on a walk on one of the narrowest streets in Eastern Europe, Rope Street, explore the Council Square, and delve into the secrets of the gothic style church, the Black Church. The city of Brasov was one of the wealthiest medieval cities in Transylvania and today one of the main touristic sites in Transylvania.
The tour continues with visiting the world famous Bran Castle, or Dracula's Castle. It is one of the spookiest medieval castles in Europe - often referred to as the home of Dracula. Bran Castle was built in the 13th century on a 60-meter cliff, guarding the most important access route into Transylvania. Here will find out more about the Romanian royal family, the connection with the Queen Mary, and the new age stories about the castle. You will depart from the Castle of Dracula and head back to the historical region of Wallachia - the land reigned by Vlad the Impaler.
If the time allows, will see on the way to the "Dracula castle," another fortress that dominates the surroundings: Rasnov fortress, first dated in medieval documents in 1335. A Hollywood sign marks the hill where the fortress is today, and invite the tourists to a castle tour.
The final stop for the day is Snagov Monastery , located on the small Snagov Island, where Vlad the Impaler is supposedly buried. *The place where Vlad was buried is uncertain, and many stories and legends are hovering around. According to the legend, Vlad the Impaler was not killed by the Otomans, but he was freed by his daughter and brought to Italy.
The most widely accepted legend depicts that Vlad the Impaler could not be Christianly buried after his assassination because of the rival aristocratic families. As a consequence, the monks from Snagov Monastery stole his body in secret, to bury him in a proper traditional way.

The airport transfer will take place according to schedule and your Classic Romania Tour will end.

We are three generations who have worked continuously for life.

Advice for Australians traveling abroad
According with Australian government the following advice are to be followed:
Before you go
- Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
- Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
- Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
- See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
- Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
- Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.
- If you’ll drive overseas check out the local traffic laws and practices. You’re likely to need an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well as your Australian driver’s licence.
- Share your itinerary with friends or family members. Give them copies of your passport
Travel insurance
Holidays don’t always go as planned. If you’re going overseas, travel insurance is as important as a passport. Without it, you or your family could suffer financially if things go wrong. No matter who you are, where you’re going and what you’re doing, get insurance.
Travel insurance is especially important if you need medical assistance. Healthcare overseas can be very expensive. Most countries won’t give you free care, or subsidise the cost of your care. You, or your insurer, must usually pay full price.

Foreign currencies may be exchanged at banks or authorized exchange offices. International airports and larger hotels also offer currency exchange services. The tour guide is also responsible for helping clients with money exchange; recommend the exchange offices which charge the lowest commission.

What is the voltage of the electric power system in Romania?
In Romania electric power in use is of 220 voltages, AC, usually 2 pronged.
What’s the climate like in Romania, what clothes should I wear?
Romania enjoys warm summers and cold winters. In summer, cool cottons are best and in the winter a warm jacket or alike is recommended. Autumn is dry and cool, with fields and trees producing beautifully colored foliage. The weather in October-November is very unpredictable, with daytime temperatures between 6°-17° Celsius (42.80 - 62.60 Fahrenheit), and night time temperatures between 3° - 10°Celsius (37.40 - 50 Fahrenheit); but it is very much possible that you will see some snowfall especially in the mountain areas.
What is the time zone for Romania?
Romanian time is EET (Eastern European Time, two hours ahead of GMT, seven hours ahead of New York and ten hours ahead of Los Angeles. Check right now what time is in Bucharest, the capital city of Romania: https://time.is/Bucharest
What clothes should we pack? Will we be OK with jeans for the tour? How should we plan to dress for dinner? What is the dress code? Could we shop for clothes?
The dress code in Romania is the same as all over Europe (think France, Germany, UK or Italy). Wearing jeans, t-shirts/sweatshirts and athletic shoes is standard casual in Romanian. Plenty of designers’ shops are to be found in major cities: Bucharest, Cluj, Brasov, Sibiu, where people are a bit too pretentious when it comes to their outfits. Dorobanti Boulevard in Bucharest can easily be compared to Chaps Elysees in Paris when it comes to “fashionists” (costs are similar too). The malls are well supplied with designers’ clothes and with respect to the prices, a great deal of our clients found the Romanian costs to be more acceptable then the ones in US. With regards to the restaurants’ dress code, something casual is sufficient. You can wear whatever you would wear at home. To satisfy dress codes for churches and monasteries, men and women are requested to cover their arms and legs (no shorts above the knees or sleeveless garments).

Advice for US citizens traveling in Romania
Before you go write down contact details for the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to carry with you in case of emergency while traveling. US Embassy in Romania 4-6, Dr. Liviu Librescu Blvd. District 1, Bucharest 015118 Romania Telephone: (+40) 21 200-3300 https://ro.usembassy.gov/
Notify your bank and credit card companies of your travel, and check exchange rates. Some banks are blocking your credit card payment when a transaction occur from abroad.
Safeguard Your Documents!
Make two copies of all your travel documents in case of emergency. Leave one copy with a trusted friend or relative at home and carry the other separately from your original documents. To help prevent theft, do not carry your passport in your back pocket, and keep it separate from your money.
Passport Validity Three months beyond departure date. We recommend a minimum of six months validity after entry date
• Children’s passports: Passports issued for children under age 16 are valid for only five years, not 10 years like adult passports. Check passport expiration dates carefully and renew early.
Visas Not required for stays under 90 days
Consent for Travel with Minors If you are traveling alone with children, foreign border officials may require custody documents or notarized written consent from the other parent. Health Insurance: Many foreign medical facilities and providers require cash payment up front and do not accept U.S. insurance plans. Medicare does not provide coverage outside of the United States. Check your U.S. health care policy to see if it will cover you overseas. If not, consider buying supplemental insurance. Make sure the insurance you purchase covers any special medical needs or risks you anticipate on your trip.
Currency restrictions Entry: Amounts over 10,000 Euros or equivalent must be declared For exit: Amounts over 10,000 Euros or equivalent must be declared
Safety There were no terrorist acts in Romania. However credible information indicates terrorist groups continue plotting attacks in Europe. All European countries remain potentially vulnerable to attacks from transnational terrorist organizations.
The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules [with regards to best practices and safety inspections] are regularly enforced, though some tourism-related activities (such as rock climbing and extreme sports) are less regulated than in the U.S. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available in near major cities.
Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. Medical treatment in Romania is not up to western standards. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance
Reported types of crime include: • Robbery, pick pocketing, internet scams, and credit card fraud are the most commonly reported crimes. • Organized groups of criminals, sometimes including minors, operate in train stations, trains, subways, and busses. • Money exchange schemes often involve individuals posing as plainclothes policemen who approach you, flash a badge, and ask for your passport and wallet. Insist on the presence of a uniformed police officer and request that any issues be resolved at the police station. • If traveling on an overnight train, travel with a companion and in the highest class available. • Do not leave your personal belongings unattended; stow them securely out of sight. • Use ATMs located inside banks. You should check ATM machines for any evidence of tampering before use. • Be extra cautious of your surroundings if using an internet café. • Use cash wherever possible in lieu of credit cards.
Laws Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. Special Circumstances: • Romania is situated in a seismically active region and has a history of devastating earthquakes, with the greatest risk occurring in Bucharest. • Mountainous areas of the country can be subject to torrential rains and flash floods, especially in the spring and summer months. • Streets and sidewalks are often icy and hazardous during winter. • Avoid contact with stray dogs. • Travelers’ checks are of limited use, but ATMs (“bancomats” in Romanian) are widely available.
LGBT Travelers There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Romania. However, the annual gay pride parades in Bucharest have been the scene of violent protests in past years.
Health Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas.
Medical Insurance Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription. • Basic medical supplies are limited in Romania, especially outside of major cities. • Hospitals often lack nursing care and assistance for the elderly. • Most prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications are available in Romania but are often sold under different names. • Response times for emergency services vary widely depending on the region of the country and nature of emergency. It is strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.
Road Conditions and Safety Though Romanian traffic laws are very strict, road accidents are a real and dangerous threat for U.S. citizens visiting Romania. According to the European Union Road Federation, Romania has the highest per-vehicle rate of road fatalities of any country in the EU, a rate similar with USA.
If you chose to drive in Romania, practice defensive driving techniques. While major streets in larger cities and major inter-city roads are generally in fair to good condition, many secondary roads are in poor repair, unpaved, poorly lit, narrow, and lacking marked lanes. • Mountain roads are particularly dangerous when wet or covered with snow or ice. Winter snow removal is intermittent. • It is common for pedestrians, animals, cyclists, and horse-drawn carts to share a road with motor vehicles, especially in rural areas. • Parked vehicles often block sidewalks, forcing pedestrians to walk in the streets. • Cross only at crosswalks and exercise vigilance as crosswalks are generally poorly marked. • Local drivers often ignore traffic lights and crosswalk signs. Maintain vigilance when driving to avoid hitting pedestrians in the streets. Traffic Laws: Romanian traffic laws are very strict. • The traffic police can confiscate any form of a driver’s license or permit for 1-3 months and request payment of fines at the time of the infraction. • Police are required to give all drivers involved in an accident a breathalyzer test on the scene. • Refusal to take a breathalyzer test may result in criminal penalties regardless of whether or not alcohol was involved. • Wearing a seat belt is mandatory. • Children under 12 years of age may not be transported in the front seat. • Use of mobile phones while driving is banned, with exception of hands free systems.
U.S. citizens arriving in Romania for stays up to 90 days may use their U.S. state drivers’ licenses (DL) along with an International Driving Permit. The U.S. Department of State has authorized two organizations to issue international permits to those who hold valid U.S. driver’s licenses: the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance.
If entering Romania by vehicle you need to purchase a road tax badge known as “rovinieta” at the border crossing point. Proof of insurance and a car registration document are required when purchasing the “rovinieta.” Drivers of vehicles registered abroad who are not in possession of a valid international insurance document must buy short-term insurance at the border.
Roadside help, vehicle assistance, towing services: Dial 9271 Ambulance, fire brigade, police: Dial 112 .
