Have been going to the Traveller’s Rest for many years. Always lovely food and a great cosy pub atmosphere. Beautiful refurb and some nice touches with blankets and a table with dog treats etc. Our server Darren was very efficient and helpful, thanks very much! We’ll be back soon :)

Seven of us went for Sunday lunch for a birthday celebration, food was plentiful, warm and very tasty. The gravy was lovely homemade beef dripping gravy. If I had to criticise something it would be a very slight criticism the roast potatoes would finish the dinner off perfectly if just cooked a little bit longer for a crispier roast but other than that beautiful. Desserts were tasty but small in portion for the price. Will definitely recommend this place and will be returning soon. Thank you to all the staff.

We live in Caerphilly and have recently started visiting The Traveller’s Rest again. We went in December and again last week and our experience was 5*. Food was delicious and so fresh. The turkey we had in December was probably the best I’ve ever tasted. Veg absolutely delicious and fresh. I had pie last week which again was delicious. Comfortable, friendly and excellent food. So lucky to have such a lovely place 5 minutes from where we live. Will definitely visit more regularly from now on.

We visited The Travellers Rest this lunch-time, our first visit since the premises re-opened following lockdown. We felt a little apprehensive, not knowing what to expect, but our worries were soon laid to rest. The landlord has put in plenty of safety measures, but they... are all discreet and do not take anything away from the ambience. The tables have been spaced to allow social distancing, plastic screens have been placed at the bar and in some key areas, and sanitiser dispensers are placed in several locations. A member of staff came to take our drinks and food order, as it is now all table service, as standing at the bar is no longer allowed. We noticed that the staff were sanitising the trays after each use, and as soon as a table was vacated it was cleared and sanitised. Very reassuring to see. We enjoyed our lunch-time drink and meal, and certainly felt that every precaution for our safety had been implemented. We look forward to our next visit. More

The most recent visit was yesterday and as normal the service and food was excellent. The portion size is brilliant especially with the specials. Plenty of vegetables as a side to your meal. My Nan says she always feels like she has been out for... a meal as it’s so nice compared to the normal sit eat and out places. More

Came here on a recommend, really pleased we came. Cosy, warm welcome and very good menu to choose from. Lamb chops and the three meat dinner was first class and very much not overpriced. Will be back

Having visited here on numerous occasions over the years but of late we are finding the service is not as good as normal. Especially tonite we had a table for 630 ordered our food 10 minutes earlier at 6.20 pm only to be served at... 745.not only a late service but a table of 6 came in after us and were served before us. When this was mentioned to the staff of 26 yrs we were told to mention it to the manager. Not a good service at all. More

Ate here as quite local to us. Covid measures were excellent and felt safe. Staff were great. No Track and Trace code though. Ordered 2 steak pies and home cooked chips. The pie came as a slice, chips looked like they were out of a... bag, ready gravy. Presented well but very average food. Don’t think we will return, better food elsewhere. More

Just been for the Pie Night, 2 pies for £11, absolutely superb food, for the price we thought it would be a small portion , how wrong can you be, nice big slice of juicy meat and light pastry, accompanied by chops and garden or... mushy peas. So very tasty. The pub itself, is a proper country pub, warm and welcoming, with very friendly staff, we were shown straight away to our table, and the service was quick and friendly. Was so good, we have booked again, and it’s probably a good idea to book, as it got busy, but that didn’t slow things down at all! Can’t believe we have lived here 4 years, and only just discovered this place. Can’t wAit to go back! More

This was our 1st visit to The Travellers Rest. I booked a table over the phone with a lady who didn’t seem to have the time to answer my questions. We arrived for a birthday meal with 4 other guests. The food was bland and... with social distancing to be adhered too I felt putting other guests on the table next to us (literally back to back) was not acceptable. We finished our mains and left. When we went there was supposed to be 20% discount, but the waitress told me you had to ask for it was not automatic.m More

This place used to be our favourite pub to visit for a family meal. This is the first time we have been in over a year due to Covid and I have to say, we won’t be returning. I had the braising steak which was... riddled with fat and my wife had steak and ale pie which had hardly any meat in but what meat Iwas there was again very fatty. My wife then ordered Apple pie which came as cherry pie (she doesn’t like cherry) so had to be sent back once we were finally able to get the waitresses attention. My daughter ordered chocolate brownies with ice cream for dessert which came with raspberry’s all over it and a raspberry sauce (it doesn’t state raspberry anywhere on the menu) she doesn’t like raspberry so again had to be sent back. Overall very disappointed not only with the food but also the service was a little slow More

Are you sure that it was our pub that you visited as we do not and have not had Apple Pie for a long time. If there was a mix up we apologise and regarding the raspberries that would have been added for decoration purposes... More

I often visit the Travellers whilst I'm down from Scotland to meet up with Family and Friends. From the minute you walk in you're always given a warm welcome by all of the staff and Management. Excellent selection of both hot and cold drinks available.... I have eaten here on numerous occasions and being an ex Chef myself, I would highly recommend the food both for the quality and value for money. It is understandable that some folks like to complain about even the most trivial of matters, ask any one that has worked in the Hospitality business and they will agree, however it is the way that these complaints are dealt with that makes a visit here the better for it. The Landlord has trained his team to an excellent level of both quality service and standards. Personally I would highly recommend visiting the Travellers, whether it's for an informal drink or entertaining Family and Friends in the Restaurant. More

We arrived at Travellers Rest with a warm greeting from staff. We sat on the front with a fantastic view of the city and the staff were more than helpful. The food was impeccable, staff checked on us to see if the food was OK,... it was delicious. The desserts were catered to perfection especially the chocolate brownie. We felt so relaxed and at home we didn't want to leave. 5* rating all round. More

We have just returned from our second stay with family at Steve's fabulous cottages. Weather was truly awful for May but the friendly welcome from Steve, his team and the locals was as usual second to none. Lots of nearby venues closed for outside dining... but unlike the weather The food and hospitality at The Travellers Rest did not let us down. The cottages are so clean, modern and cosy with excellent covid safety measures in place. Thank you all so much, we will be back again...soon ! More

Went to the Travellers Rest Stanley tonight. I can honestly say I was very disappointed it's always been my favourite restaurant as they have the best home made chips. Tonight they were worse than the chippy warm ups. The chocolate fudge cake was also very... cheap looking and tasting and the cream was very thin. I know we have just been through covid and I understand that you need to recoup some money, but what I had tonight was very poor. Even the waitress forgot to give us our change. Not sure I'll return !! More

Visited for Sunday lunch. On arrival we were seated really quickly and had our orders taken. When our starters arrived they were both burned, as though they had been cooked previously and then sat under a heat lamp for a long time, mine was so... burned that the pastry was rock hard and inedible. No waitress came to check on our meals and we were left waiting for around 30 minutes before our starter plates were even cleared and even then I had to get up and ask a waitress where our mains were. I tried multiple times to get the attention of someone but was repeatedly ignored while the waitresses stood around chatting and the waitress looking after us wouldn’t even make eye contact. The Sunday roast itself was nice but unfortunately couldn’t redeem the bad service we received. Left feeling really disappointed as I really wanted to like this place. More

We booked a table for 3 people. The food was good, but when we had just finished eating a rude waitress came over to us and said we had 15 minutes left to sit at the table. We carried on drinking our drinks, then 10... minutes later we were asked to leave by another rude waitress. More

I have heard so many great reviews about The Travellers Rest from my friends and family and I decided to take my Mum and Dad for a early Mother's day meal on Saturday 2nd March. We arrived a little earlier than our table was booked... for and we were warmly greeted, we had drink in the bar area beforehand, my dad was spoilt for choice from the range of beers and larger. The bar was busy with a lovely warm country pub atmosphere. When our time was ready to go through to the restaurant one of the waitresses took us to the table where we were given our menus. After a few minutes our order was taken. We went straight in for the mains instead of any starters, my dad had a steak, myself hunters chicken and my mum the homemade lasagne. The restaurant was very busy but there was still a warm and welcoming atmosphere with people chatting and having a good time. After 15mins our main meals arrived all pipping hot and with plenty on the plates for the money :) All 3 of us really enjoyed our meals, dad said his steak was cooked perfectly, and mums lasagne was amazing (proper home cooked meals done well!) My hunters chicken was fantastic as I usually have something like this if I go any other pub, but here there was plenty of it and tasted great :). Myself and my mum couldn't fit a desert in which she was disappointed because some of her favourites were on there, but my dad had the cheesecake which was really tasty :) we finished off with 3 coffees to end the night :) Absolutely fantastic service all though the pub and restaurant from owner to waiting on staff... keep up the good work!. So glad we went to the T.Rest as it was a special Mother's day and it was finished off with a great meal to top our great day out! We will definitely be back and we will definitely recommend to our friends and family :) More
