The Ultimate Mount Rinjani Trekking Guide (2024 Update)

Jane And Stephen

  • Last Updated: December 12, 2023

A Mount Rinjani trekking tour is not for novice hikers or casual travellers. But if you’re ready for an epic 3-day journey to the summit of the second highest volcano in Indonesia, here’s everything you need to know before you go in our guide.

At 3,726 metres above sea level, Mount Rinjani looms large over the entire island of Lombok in Indonesia.

Of the 130 volcanoes in the country, Rinjani is the second-highest (topped only by Mount Kerinci on Sumatra).

Rinjani’s ominous silhouette is a constant reminder of the powerful forces rumbling just beneath the surface of the earth.

That power is what draws hundreds of intrepid hikers to Rinjani every day.

Why Do a Rinjani Trek?

Could you handle a rinjani trek, sembalun or senaru: where to start, how many nights on rinjani, what’s the food like on a rinjani trek, where do you sleep on rinjani, what does a rinjani trekking tour cost, how to choose the best rinjani trekking service, what’s included on a mount rinjani tour, tips for trekking mount rinjani, rinjani trekking packing list, save this pin for later.

The tough hike to the crater rim is rewarded by absolutely magnificent views.

Rocky black soil at the summit drops off into a lush valley filled with purples so deep and greens so bright they don’t look like they should exist in nature.

Lake Segara Anak, nestled in the bottom of the gaping crater, is a deep turquoise, echoing the spectacular colour of Lombok’s seas.

On the edge of the lake sits an active volcano, Mount Barujari, which steadily spews threatening clouds of smoke into the air.

Mount Rinjani Trekking

And at night, the sky is blanketed with stars so thick they look painted on.

While the views inspire awe, the most compelling reason to trek Mount Rinjani is to challenge your body and your mind, leap firmly out of your comfort zone, and be able to shout “Hell yes, I did it!”

If that sounds good to you, read on for everything you need about…

How to Plan Your Epic Mount Rinjani Trekking Adventure

I’ll admit, we went into the Mount Rinjani trek with a bit of a cavalier attitude. Sure, we’d read the stories about how hard it was supposed to be, but we’re experienced trekkers with decades of challenging mountain hikes behind us.

We’ve trekked all over Canada, Europe, and even in Vietnam .

How much harder could trekking Mount Rinjani possibly be?

As it turns out, trekking Rinjani is hard. Really freaking hard.

The Rinjani trek starts with a climb of 1500 m over 8 km. Most of that elevation change takes place during in the final 4 km, which take about 4 hours.

Yep, that’s just one measly kilometre an hour.

To make matters more difficult, there is next to no trail maintenance, so the route is sandy, slippery, and ridiculously steep.

Unless you’re a trail running hero or an actual superhero, be prepared to have your will and your body pushed to their limits on your way up Mount Rinjani.

And that’s just the first day.

The second day starts in the middle of the night, so hikers can summit for sunrise. To get the summit, there’s another 1000 m of elevation gain, along a narrow trail of slippery loose scree.

It’s cold up there, too. Even in August, the temperature hovers around freezing.

After all the climbing, the descent should be a relief. Instead, it seems to go on for days, requiring every ounce of hamstring strength you can muster, plus knees of steel, and an excellent sense of humour.

Trekking Mount Rinjani

If you come away without any scraped knees or sore muscles, you’re definitely part mountain goat!

So, could you handle trekking Rinjani?

If you’ve read all of this and you’re thinking “Hell, yeah! Bring it on!” then keep reading.

If you’re still not sure, check out my 7 Essential Tips For Surviving A Mount Rinjani Trek →

What Are The Options For a Rinjani Trekking Tour?

There are two main points of entry to Rinjani National Park.

You can ascend from the village of Sembalun or from Senaru. On three- and four-day hikes, you depart from one village and descend to the other.

We highly recommend starting in Sembalun because of the way the trails are configured.

The first day of ascent from Sembalun is steep and sandy. It looks like it would be absolutely brutal going in the opposite direction.

Likewise, the descent to the crater lake is so steep and rugged, that it would be a real leg-breaker going the other way.

If you want a more off-the-beaten track experience, book a private tour and ask about one of the less-used routes, like the trails from Aik Berik or Torean. We wish we had known about them before our trek!

Three Days, Two Nights

The most popular option (and the one we recommend) is the 3-day, 2-night trek . This gives you just enough time to climb to the summit and also visit the crater lake and hot springs.

If you’re in no rush, consider the 4-day, 3-night option , which goes to the same locations but provides a little more free time to relax and enjoy Mount Rinjani.

Two Days, One Night

The 2-day, 1-night tour from Sembalun includes the option to summit at sunrise. If you’re in amazing shape and love to punish your machine, go for it!

Otherwise, take pity on your poor body and give yourself more time on the mountain.

The 2-day, 1-night trek from Senbaru takes trekkers to the crater rim opposite the summit. This is the easiest (not to say that it’s easy) of the Mount Rinjani trekking options.

You don’t get near the summit or the lake but it does provide incredible views of the crater. If you think you can’t handle a longer trek but still want to experience Rinjani, this is probably the best option.

If you book the full 2-day, 1-night tour on Klook they will pick you up from anywhere in Lombok and provide everything for you.

BONUS –  Booking ahead of time ensures you won’t miss out on the tour, and get the best price too! And just for NOMADasaurus readers, if you use the Klook discount code  “NOMADS10”  on the website when checking out, you’ll get $10 off your first booking!

Mount Rinjani Trekking

Be aware that “one night” or “two nights” refers to number of nights on the mountain. Most Rinjani trekking companies encourage you to spend a night in Senbaru before the tour to get an early start. This hotel is often included in the price, but be sure to check!

Private Tours and Hiking Rinjani Without A Guide

While it is technically possible to trek Mount Rinjani without a tour or a guide, it is actively discouraged both by the government and the community. Unless you are an extremely experienced hiker and have hiked in the tropics before, don’t even consider it. If you’re injured on the mountain without a guide or porters, you’ll be in some serious trouble.

If you do decide to trek Rinjani independently, please sign in at the park office and pay the entrance fee. Though it’s questionable whether the fees are used to maintain Rinjani, signing in is for your own safety.

On our day-one lunch break, we were astonished to see full-on camp kitchens being set up by all the guides and porters on the mountain.

In Canada, you’re lucky to get a squashed peanut butter sandwich for lunch on a long hike.

On Rinjani, you get a heaping plate of fried vegetables, tofu and tempeh, a pile of freshly cooked rice crackers, all the rice you can eat, plus a massive fruit plate for dessert. And that’s just the vegetarian option!

Mount Rinjani Trekking Meals

This meal was not unusual. Everything we ate on Rinjani, and everything we saw being served to fellow trekkers, was freshly cooked and plentiful. There was so much food, we were rarely able to finish our meals.

You’ll sleep snuggled in a tent at a campsite on the crater rim or by the lake.

Our tent was clean and modern, if a little bit short for our long bodies! The sleeping bags had been freshly laundered and the camp pillows were also clean.

You won’t find much solitude at your campsite though, since hundreds of other trekkers will be camping right alongside you.

There’s a huge range of prices for trekking Rinjani, depending on which company you go with, where and when you book, and which tour option you choose. I saw prices quoted anywhere between $80 and $450 US for similar tours.

Avoid the cheapest companies, as many don’t provide essential services like an experienced guide, good sleeping bags, garbage pack-out, and a toilet tent.

You can save money by booking once you’re already on Lombok. Just make sure you know which Rinjani trekking company you’re going with so you can ask the essential questions and check their reviews.

If you don’t have time to wait around on Lombok looking for a tour with availability, it is best to book ahead . Check out some of the tours I’ve linked to on this page.

Rinjani Trekking Porters

Budget a little extra for tipping. After you see how hard your porters and guide work, you will be happy to supplement their incomes.

A minimum of 100,000 IDR (around $8 US) per guide/porter from each hiker is a good guideline.

Choose your Mount Rinjani trekking package carefully. Yes, you can pick up el cheapo tours after you arrive in Lombok but you tend to get what you pay for on Mount Rinjani.

I recommend ignoring the cheapest options and spending a little more to ensure you are comfortable and safe on the mountain.

Hajar Trekking took excellent care of us during our Mount Rinjani tour. We can enthusiastically recommend them.*

Hajar grew up in Senbaru and he cares deeply about the mountain and the future of tourism there. Our guide, Adi, was funny, informative, and always put our safety first.

He has been up the mountain hundreds of times, knows every rock and tree root on the trail, and was patient with our endless stops for photos and videos.

Mount Rinjani Trekking

The two porters who took care of us were just amazing, too, working their butts off to lug our camping gear and food up the mountain and to get our campsite set up and perfect before we arrived.

These are the things that should be included in your Rinjani trekking package. If they aren’t, look for another company.

  • One English-speaking, licensed, experienced guide
  • One porter per person in your group
  • Meals, snacks, soft drinks and water
  • Tent and sleeping bag
  • Transportation to and from any town on Lombok
  • Transportation between Senbaru and Sembalun
  • Hotel stay in Senbaru the night before the trek

Some companies provide a few nice-to-have extras. This is what we got:

A toilet tent allowed us to do our business in private and to bury our waste. Without a toilet tent, you take your chances in the bushes where privacy is very hard to come by.

A camping pillow which helped us get a better night’s sleep.

Two camping chairs that kept us out of the thick Rinjani dust at mealtimes.

Winter jackets to keep us warm at the top of the mountain. Even in August, the summit was around 5 degrees celsius! Brrrr.

We recommend having a good backpack for hiking as well .

Rinjani Trekking

Headlamps to make the ascent to the Rinjani summit possible. A headlamp leaves your hands free to carry trekking poles or help you scramble up the steepest sections.

Trekking poles to save your knees on the steep descents and give you extra ability to balance on the often treacherous trails.

Other Essential Questions To Ask About Your Rinjani Trekking Package

What do the porters carry? Usually, hikers carry all their personal items (clothes, toiletries etc) and the porters carry food, water and camping equipment.

What is the group size? We were on a private tour, but if you go with a group, be sure to ask about the group size. The larger groups on the trail tended to be noisy and experience more delays.

What do they do with garbage? You are going to go through a lot of food and water on the trail. Make sure your tour company pays their porters to carry your garbage out, instead of dumping it or burning it on the mountain. There is a lot of garbage on Rinjani – please don’t add to it!

Who runs the company? What is their story? We love to travel with private companies run by local people. They tend to care deeply about the environment and the longevity of their business and less about earning a quick buck.

Request trekking poles. We had never trekked with poles before but they were indispensable for this trip. They’ll help keep you upright through the sandy, slippery slopes and will save your knees after hours of steep descents.

Be prepared. The trail will probably be harder than you think. Take your time, stopping every few steps to catch your breath if you need to. If you just keeping taking the next step and then the next, you will eventually make it to the top. Read up on our top hiking tips for beginners for more help.

Be OK with not summiting. Don’t be ashamed to say “no” to the sunrise summit trek. Plenty of people don’t go up! If the first day nearly killed you, stay in your tent and rest. There is plenty of exciting hiking to come without risking injury or exhaustion just to see the summit.

Don’t get too cocky on the descent. The trail down is steep and precarious. It’s easy to slip and fall and even easier to injure your knees. Just because the porters are running down the trail in flip-flops doesn’t mean you have to do it too!

Be respectful. Try to stay aware on the trail, even when you’re exhausted. Let faster hikers go by you and always move over for porters. Remember, they are working while you are there for fun!

Don’t add to the Rinjani litter problem. It’s no secret that there is a lot of garbage on Mount Rinjani. Bring a ziplock bag with you and please pack out your own toilet paper, baby wipes, cigarette butts and other personal garbage. If you want to do more, bring a garbage bag and pick up rubbish along the trail.

Bring as little as possible. If you think you’ll survive without something, leave it behind! You’ll regret the extra weight when you’re on your 1200th metre of ascent for the day!

  • Hat, gloves & scarf (it’s very cold at the top)
  • Good hiking shoes (running shoes are not grippy enough)
  • Headlamp (for the night hike to the summit)
  • One/two sweat-wicking t-shirts
  • One pair of shorts
  • One pair of long pants
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Sun hat (if you don’t have one make this easy DIY hat )
  • Lip sunscreen (our lips got burned – not a good look)
  • Socks & undies
  • ID and cash for tipping

Optional items:

  • Base layer (it gets freaking cold at the summit)
  • Baby wipes (if you pack them in, pack them out)
  • Soap or hand sanitizer

That’s everything you need to know before you book your Rinjani trekking tour. If we missed something or if you have questions, ask away in the comments section below!

Wow, this guide is incredibly detailed and informative! I’m planning to tackle Mount Rinjani in 2024 and this guide has already helped me so much in planning my trip. The route descriptions and tips on acclimatization are especially useful. Thank you for sharing your expertise!

The track to Rinjani is getting more and more difficult, bro, after a fairly large earthquake in Lombok, several trekking routes, especially from the lake to the Senaru Crater, were damaged and you need to be careful when climbing because rocks often fall.

thank you for promotion mount rinjani in lombok we hope many hiker come to rinjani.

We are currently in Lombok to do the hike. We went to the park office without guide, they refused to sell tickets. At least now you have to book a guide to enter.

Great post! I did the 27K race of the Rinjani 100 a few months ago. It’s pretty much the same thing only that you race up from Sembalun all the way to the crater rim and back with a cut-off time of 9 hours. It was one tough but incredible adventure! Love the blog, keep it up, guys.

Great article. Having hiked Gunung Rinjani back in my twenties (late 1990’s) with 4 experienced local friends it was interesting to read this report. Back then , we did not encounter a single “western” tourist (only 3 or 4 groups of religious pilgrims) or a single piece of rubbish throughout the 4 days (it was probably off season). We carried all the cooking gear and basic fishing equipment ourselves and had to rely on our most experienced group member to find the few scatterered water holes for our drinking water. Most of us were wearing flipflops though I think – and yes it was pretty hard, but youthful enthousiasm and maybe some guardian angels, made that everything went well and the sore muscles just ignored. With one of the guys I even made the sunrise summit hike, barefoot – too slippery for anything else. We spent a day or two resting and fishing carp until we couldn’t eat any more. The lake is considered sacred and so is a nearby mystic cave – I dearly hope they are still being taken care of….and it has not drowned in rubbish and disrespect. On the end of the last day, we did get a big scare: one of our friends had disappeared – with the owner of the very first and lonely litlle warung, I headed straight back to look for him as it was getting dark. Luckily we found him after about half an our, resting next to the path and suffering from exhaustion. In the end everything turned out fine. I have not been since, but reading this article, I would strongly recommend sticking to the recommendations of the article and please be respectful of this place – it is still considered a sacred place by many and who knows, leaving a silent private little prayer just for yourself will pay off more than leaving rubbish or nad vibes.

P.S. Unfortunately I have lost contact with my Chinese/Indonesian friends from Mataram – IF you are reading this by some huge coincidence, PLEASE contact me by email….

This article very helping. Thank you very much for share

We as Lombok people are very grateful for your advice to give tips to the porters. Their task is very heavy not comparable to their daily wages.

Hi JP, thanks for your comment. This is a guest post from our friends over at My Five Acres.

I am gathering that is what happens. You can arrange for you luggage to be stored there as long as you book a night there when you return from the hike. This is what has happened with other hikes we have done in other places. Sorry we can not help you more. Please let us know what your outcome is.

All the best.

I hope I will be there some day.

We hope so too. 🙂

This is Really Help full for me thanks A million

Glad the article was helpful. 🙂

Hi, any idea if mt rinjani is open to climb this year particularly in june?

Hi Joven, we are not too sure. Please contact the tour companies. They will be able to assist you. All the best

hi, have you got the certain information for rinjani open day, our schedule is June 1

Hi Sky, we are not too sure. Please contact the tour companies. They will be able to assist you. All the best

Wow, I did not know this place until I read this article. It makes me want to try.

Glad Jane and Stephen could help. 🙂

I plan to climb Rinjani this April, but I check the National Park website, they say they are still closing the climb until the time that has not been determined, I think this has something to do with the earthquake last July.

Maybe it might be or for the rainy season. Hope you get to climb Rinjani another time. 🙂

THANKS TO THIS POST I was able to do my hike to Mount Rinjani, I recently did a 2 days 1-night hike from the aik berik route(1 of the 4 legal routes), it was only a crater rim trek but its worth every second of it. it was a really spectacular experience!

We got the track and cloud forest waterfalls for ourselves because everyone still doesn’t know about it! the Aik Berik route is still ‘virgin’, clean, and not crowded.

Note: Aik Berik Village is the only available route until 2020, and the route will be closed from January to March, so you only have ONE MONTH to go before the mountain closed due to heavy rains.

FYI Aik berik is the only route you can enjoy on mount Rinjani, it’s not possible to reach the summit and the lake but still, you can enjoy Rinjani from a completely different angle. it is already opened on 19th November 2018 and I suggest you go trekking with an eco-friendly company such as RinjaniFoundation.com since this new company has a mission to alleviate poverty around mount Rinjani. They took care of me and my friends from start to finish, they cook the most delicious Indonesian food! check them out.

Thank you so much for sharing. It sounds like you have a blast. Thanks for all the information.

Thank you very much for share the great article for Mount rinjani Trekking Information, Is very helpful and informative.

Glad the article was helpful. Thank you. 🙂

is the trek open at the begining of october?

Sorry not too sure Alina. You will have to contact the companies. This is a review on a tour one of our writers went on. All the best

Hi there, thanks for the informative article! I’m thinking of doing the Mt Rinjani hike in late October, would it be too cold up there? Also, I’m arriving in Bali on a Wednesday and leaving again on a Sunday. Would that be too little time to get to Lombok, do the trek and get back to Denpasar? Cheers, Angie

Hi Angie, That is exciting for your up coming trip. We are not to sure as we have not done this hike. Please contact Jane over at My Five Acres and she’ll be able to help. Thanks. https://www.myfiveacres.com/

I appreciate your post – it really helped me prepare for doing it. I just got back, and while this is fresh in my mind, here are a few things you left out/glimpsed past that may help others:

-Bring a gaiter/handkerchief/face mask if you can – its lightweight but will protect against the insane amount of dust that will get into your mouth/eyes. I had black boogers every night, someone in my group got a piece of debris in her eye, and my throat was perpetually dry from all of the dust. I’d recommend the gaiter+handkerchief combo to battle sweat and dust. -The porters work so hard. I only know the figure for the guides – 35€/trip (3D/2N). The porters definitely make less. TIP YOUR PORTERS AND GUIDES. Yes, I get it, “well, I paid 1.X million and that should be enough”, and “well, they’re used to this”, is bullshit. The money means so much more to them than it does to you – back at home you’d not flinch at the idea of ordering a cup of coffee for 5€, so why not help a human being who is keeping you safe? -Bring a plastic bag to carry your/other rubbish with you. Especially the last day of the 3D/2B you’re only going down and it’s relatively easy (after your legs are jelly, granted) – if we all pitched in and helped pick up stuff and bring it down, the mountain would be so much cleaner. -Take your time and POUND water. For altitude poisoning, you usually take acetazilomide (diamox) to combat it (that’s what I did for my salkantay trek to machu picchu) but the Indonesians are not as aware – I couldn’t find it anywhere in the country. A natural way to help is to breathe deeply, take your time, and drink water like there’s no tomorrow. It’s not a race – it’s a test of will power!

Thank you so much for your tips and advice for future trekkers. 🙂

hi, thanks for the blog, loved to read it 🙂 I did the 4 day/3 night in 2006, just me and a guide plus a porter, starting from senaru going up the rain forest and coming down again through the savana to sembalun. It was an absolute awesome experience but I wish I had prepared better lol It was early in may and def the wrong time as the nights were brutally cold and the sleeping bag to thin to sleep on the bare ground of the tent. Luckily, I had brought some small heating pads which I put on my belly at night and a survival silver foil, otherwise I would not have made it. Another thing I didn’t know was the heavy rainfall up there at that time of the year, meaning being soaked was the norm starting on day 2 on the climb down the crater… it was always a big challenge to get my sneakers dry again and on the final descent on day 4, I simply gave up and did it in my flip flops like the guys. It rained and I had walk very carefully on the slippery grass that’s why it took us 7 hours to get down! Anyhow, it was a worthwhile experience and I hope to do it again, only this time better prepared. What worries me a bit is that there seems to be a run on rinjani in these days… that’s really bad news, when I went there were hardly any other people… so maybe the wrong time was the right time in the end 🙂

So glad you had a great time. Sounds like you had a great adventure. 🙂

I am going to this Mt. Rinjani trekking on this Saturday, 7th July 18 and this is my first time on trekking. Thanks for your useful information and would prepare for it. Anybody can advice, is there any telecom service provider (mobile phone line) during the journey to the summit?

Glad we could help. Jane wrote a great article for us. Not too sure about the telecom service. Maybe drop Jane any email over at My Five Acres. All the best https://www.facebook.com/myfiveacres https://www.myfiveacres.com/

Extremely helpful article, many thanks guys.

I am traveling in August to Lombok and for sure will try with Mt Rinjani, and will definitely contact Hajar.

The only thing we’ve been told it’s full of trash….such a pity

Hi Alvin, could you please let us know how it was at this time of the year? I like to know about temperatures at night and how many people there were. Thanks in advance

Thanks for the information! I am traveling through Indonesia for two months (so my bagpack is VERY big!). Do you know if it is possible to leave some things at the hostel in Sembalun or I will have to carry my entire bagpack to Mt Rinjani?!?!

There definitely would be Maria. If not at your accommodation, I am sure you will be able to leave it at the tour company’s shop.

KINGS of the MOUNTAIN! Rinjani Trekking Club recently experienced the challenging climb to the top of the Rinjani mountain and would like to salute the fantastic supports extended by porter who help tourist and visitor achieve new heights.

Their incredible fitness allows them to climb, bare feet or with flip flops, and even sometimes run, with heavy loads of equipment and food to ensure the best comfort for visitors. When in difficulty in the last few hundred meters to the top, they patiently wait for you; when hungry, they cook for you; when tired they prepare your camp so that you can rest.

When you came across some groups of courageous climbers not using the support of the porter, you can be assured that their experience of the Mount Rinjani is much more demanding and somehow less enjoyable, since they do not have the comfort of climbing unloaded nor the company of truly warm and welcoming sasak people.

Hello, I’m Jamal

Thank you so much for your information for the trekking , its was helpful article for other climbers ,

Thanks again hope you’re well and good day

Glad we could help. Thanks

Very helpful article. Thank you so much Alesha & Jarryd 🙂 I’m going on 23-28 JUNE 2018. Coming sooooon~so nervous and excited now!!

So awesome. Have a great time. 🙂

Nice information on Rinjani. I don’t think you can get 80 USD for a 3D2N trek in Rinjani, maybe 2D1N to crater rim or something is possible.

Lovely article, very helpful!!

I’m dying to this hike; hopefully I’ll get to it this spring.

What do you reckon is the earliest the hike can be done after the rainy season?

Thanks so much for ready Ester. Our friend Jane wrote this article for us. It does sound like a wonderful hike. Your best option is to message her on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/myfiveacres/ . She’ll be happy to answer you questions. Happy travels. 🙂

Hi I’m Ronie From Rinjani – Lombok Mount Rinjani, Lombok’s highest peak ( 3726 m asl or 12,200 ft. ), draws religious pilgrim and adventure tourist alike. its crater frames a lake, which is 5 miles wide and known as segara anak, which means the lake of child. this crater also contains an active volcano, Gunung Baru.

Thank you for the information Ronie. 🙂

I was lucky enough to hike it in 1997 before the hoards of tourists discovered it. Spent one night in Senaru and went up from there. With no previous hiking experience, just a friend and one guide that we hired, it was physically challenging but SO worth it! I was lucky enough to hardly see many people on the mountain. I don’t think I’d like to do it now.

Wow Julie, what an experience. So happy you got there in the early years. Thank you for your comment. 🙂

Thanks you for sharing your experience. One day I will hike mount rinjani too.

Us too Mickel. It looks amazing. Jane and Stephen wrote a great article for us.

wooow….!That is a wonderfull experienced trek in rinjani Mountain and is a perfect information about All of Rinjani Trekking activity.

I’ve read all the climbers blogs that have been to Rinjani but the most complete info I’ve seen is on this blog. congratulations and success for you.

Thank you so much. Glad this post could help Herman. Jane and Stephen had a great time. Happy travels

Waow really nice article and good experienced. Thank you for your sharing

This looks like a great hike. I recently did a fantastic hike around the crater lake of Quitaloa in Ecuador; an exhilarating adventure in which I also had the chance to soak up plenty of local culture and knowledge.

It does doesn’t it. Jane and Stephen had a blast. We can not wait to trek it now. Your hike in Ecuador sounds amazing. We were in South America for most of the year but unfortunately didn’t see anything of Ecuador. We will have to go back. Happy travels Mark.

This was a brutal hike, but definitely worth it. I actually got a black eye on the hike down. 🙁 It was also before a 3-day music festival, so not a good look! haha

Oh no. How did you get a black eye? We are looking forward to trekking Mt Rinjani one day. Hope you had a blast at the music festival. Lest the trek wasn’t after the festival. 🙂

Best Time to Trek Mount Rinjani

Choosing the right time to embark on your Mount Rinjani trek is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience. The weather conditions, trail accessibility, and crowd levels can vary throughout the year. Here’s a breakdown of the different seasons:

Dry Season (April-October): The dry season is generally considered the best time to trek Mount Rinjani. The weather is relatively dry, with clear skies and pleasant temperatures. This makes for excellent visibility and stunning views during your ascent to the summit. However, keep in mind that this is also the peak season, and the trails can be crowded, especially between July and August.

Wet Season (November-March): The wet season in Lombok brings heavy rainfall and increased cloud cover, which can make trekking more challenging and potentially dangerous. The trails can become slippery and muddy, and the visibility may be limited. It’s important to be prepared for these conditions if you choose to trek during the wet season. Although less popular, trekking during this time allows you to experience a quieter and more serene atmosphere on the mountain.

It’s crucial to monitor weather forecasts and trail conditions before embarking on your trek, as weather patterns can be unpredictable. If there are any warnings or alerts from the National Park authorities, it’s advisable to postpone your trek for safety reasons.

While the dry season offers the best weather for trekking, it’s important to note that Mount Rinjani is a popular destination, and the trails can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider trekking during the shoulder months of April, May, September, or October, when the weather is still favorable, and the crowd levels are lower.

Now that you know the best time to trek Mount Rinjani, let’s explore the difficulty level of the trek and the fitness requirements.

Difficulty Level and Fitness Requirements

Trekking Mount Rinjani is a challenging endeavor that requires a certain level of physical fitness and mental preparedness. It’s important to assess your own capabilities and ensure you are adequately prepared before embarking on the trek. Here’s what you need to know about the difficulty level and fitness requirements:

Difficulty Level: The trek to the summit of Mount Rinjani is rated as difficult due to its steep and rugged terrain. The trail involves long and strenuous ascents and descents, often on uneven surfaces. The final push to the summit involves scaling loose scree and boulders. The altitude gain is significant, and the air becomes thinner as you ascend, which can make breathing more challenging.

Fitness Requirements: A good level of fitness is essential for a successful Mount Rinjani trek. You should be comfortable with walking long distances for consecutive days and be prepared for uphill climbs and steep descents. Regular cardiovascular exercises such as hiking, jogging, or cycling can help improve your stamina and endurance. Strength exercises targeting the legs, core, and upper body will also be beneficial. It’s recommended to start a training program at least a few months before your planned trek to build up your fitness levels.

Altitude Considerations: Mount Rinjani reaches an elevation of 3,726 meters (12,224 feet), and altitude sickness can be a risk. It’s important to ascend slowly, allowing your body enough time to acclimatize. Adequate hydration, proper nutrition, and getting enough rest during the trek are crucial. If you experience severe symptoms of altitude sickness, such as severe headaches, dizziness, nausea, or difficulty breathing, descend to lower altitudes immediately and seek medical attention if necessary.

Previous Trekking Experience: While previous trekking experience is not a requirement, it can certainly be beneficial. Having experience with multi-day hikes, camping, and endurance activities will help you better anticipate the challenges and understand the demands of trekking Mount Rinjani.

It’s important to listen to your body throughout the trek and communicate with your guide about any concerns or difficulties you may be experiencing. Remember to pace yourself, take regular breaks, and stay well-hydrated.

1) Rinjani Trekking Routes

To start, I want to lay out the various Rinjani trekking routes to choose from. Depending on your preference, hiking ability, and time availability will better help pick the right route for you.

Note : several years ago there was a very damaging earthquake on Lombok, which closed many trekking routes. All routes should be open now but please double check with tour operators to get the latest information.

When it comes to Rinjani hiking options, there are several to consider. Below are the main hiking tours that you can decide to join:

Rinjani Summit Hike ( 2 Day / 1 Night )

  • Day 1 : Sembalun to Sembalun Crater Rim (Overnight: Sembalun Crater Rim)
  • Day 2 : Sembalun Crater Rim to Rinjani Summit; back down to Sembalun Crater Rim and then down to Sembalun

The quickest way to reach the summit is to do a 2 day / 1 night option from Sembalun. This route takes you to the Sembalun Crater Rim for the night before heading up to the summit of day 2.

Once at the summit you would head all the way back down to Sembalun to end the trek.

Rinjani Summit Hike ( 3 Day / 2 Night )

  • Day 2 : Sembalun Crater Rim to Rinjani Summit; back down to Sembalun Crater Rim; down to Crater Lake; up to Senaru Crater Rim (Overnight: Senaru Crater Rim)
  • Day 3 : Senaru Crater Rim to Senaru

This is the normal route for those that want to go to the summit. On day 1 you start from the town of Sembalun and head on up to the Sembalun Crater Rim, where you enjoy sunset and stay overnight.

On day 2 you hike up to the summit for sunrise before returning to camp and then heading down into the crater lake.

Once you enjoy lunch at the lake, you would head up to the Senaru Crater Rim, where you will stay the night. On day 3 you will head down to Senaru to end your trek.

Rinjani Summit Hike ( 4 Day / 3 Night )

  • Day 2 : Sembalun Crater Rim to Rinjani Summit; back down to Sembalun Crater Rim; down to Crater Lake (Overnight: Crater Lake)
  • Day 3 : Crater Lake to Senaru Crater Rim (Overnight Senaru Crater Rim)
  • Day 4 : Senaru Crater Rim to Senaru

For those that want to split up the days a bit more, there is also a 4 day option.

Essentially days 1 and 4 are identical to days 1 and 3 of the 3 Day / 2 Night hike. However, on day 2 you will head up to the summit for sunrise and then head down to the crater lake, where you will stay the night.

On day 3 you will enjoy the lake and then hike up to the Senaru Crater Rim, where you will spend night 3. And finally, on day 4 you will head back down to Senaru.

Senaru Crater Rim Hike ( 2 Day / 1 Night )

  • Day 1 : Senaru to Senaru Crater Rim (Overnight: Senaru Crater Rim)
  • Day 2 : Senaru Crater Rim to Senaru

This hike starts in the town of Senaru on day 1 as you climb all the way to the Senaru Crater Rim. You will enjoy a sunset on the crater rim, sleep overnight, enjoy a sunrise, and then head down to Senaru on day 2.

Note that there is no summit with this option!

2) Mount Rinjani Map

Below is a map of the Mount Rinjani trekking options from Senaru and Sembalun. You can see the two blue triangles, which would be camping spots on the Sembalum and Senaru crater rims.

Feel free to also check out the interactive Google Maps a few section down that shows the route.

3) Quick Rinjani Facts

» All routes up Rinjani are closed from January 1 to March 31  due to the rainy season and to recover its ecosystem. Climbing reopens in April but be sure to double check with trekking companies before setting your plans in stone.

» There is a 150 person limit to leave from each Senaru and Sembalun per day  in order to deal with any overcrowding issues at the campsites and during the trek.

» You cannot hike Mount Rinjani on your own. You must be with a certified guide during your trek . I will speak more about one of the top trekking companies to choose from later on.

» Hiking Rinjani in the dry season (May to October) will give you the greatest chance of having clear weather on top of the mountain and safe conditions when trekking up it.

» You will want to stay one night close to the entrance of the hike . Usually your guide companies will set this up for you and have you stay in Sembalun or Senaru, so it gives you one less thing to worry about.

» There are no accommodations on the mountain. Instead you will be sleeping in tents set up by your guides and porters .

» Bring enough battery power for your electronics . The last thing you want is to not have enough battery for your camera or phone and lose out on the chance to get those beautiful pictures in.

Senaru Starting Point

4) Where is Rinjani

Mount Rinjani is located on the island of Lombok in Indonesia. On the northern end of the island is where the mountain is located.

Below on the map I have pinpointed down Sembalun, Senaru, the hiking route, camping sites, and summit.

You have a couple main ways to reach Lombok depending on where you are coming from – by plane or by boat. Below is some quick info about each of those options.

If you are coming from farther out on Indonesia, there are plenty of flights that will fly into Lombok’s main airport – LOP.

Not only can you fly in from other places in Indonesia like Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya, and Labuan Bajo but LOP is also an international airport. You can find flights from places like Perth, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur, that will get you right onto Lombok.

From the Lombok airport, it is a bit of a drive to Sembalun & Senaru (where trekking companies may put you up for the night) – around 3 hours or so.

Your other option here is to head on over to Lombok by ferry. If doing so you will most likely be starting in Bali, the Nusa Islands (Penida, Lembongan, Ceningan), or the Gili Islands (Trawangan, Air, or Meno).

Learn More: Nusa Penida Itinerary & Gili Trawangan Travel Guide

Not every one of the smaller islands will have direct routes but you can easily take a quick ferry (e.g. from Meno to Trawangan) and get to Lombok from there.

You can take a look at the various ferry schedules and search the particular route that you are looking for.

Either way, if you are flying in or boating in, the trekking company you signed up with should offer the option to pick you right up from the airport, dock, or your hotel. Many companies actually include transportation in their all-in cost.

Gili to Lombok Boat

5) Mount Rinjani Weather

Like I mentioned before, hiking Mount Rinjani in the dry season will give you the greatest chance for optimal weather conditions.

So, the May to October time period is going to be your best bet here.

Not only will you be avoiding hiking up in more muddy conditions but you also will have a much better chance to not be clouded over on the summit.

Having the views of both the crater down below and also Lombok, the Gili Islands, and even Bali out in the distance is one of the best experiences you can ask for.

Mountain weather can always be a bit tricky though and nothing is ever guaranteed. To look at the latest forecasts, head on over to Meteoblue.com , which will give you a better idea of what to expect on a day to day and hourly basis.

Rinjani Weather

6) What to Bring

Since this is a 1-3 night overnight trek, you will want to prepare accordingly. Below is a packing list with some essentials to bring along with you that will have you all set for the climb.

It is up to you if you want to wear the same clothes during the days or bring another pair to change into for your next 1-2 days of hiking.

Hiking Packing List In general when it comes to hiking, there are a few main aspects to consider. These includes clothing layers, hiking shoes, hydration & fuel, electronics, and other essentials. Below in a breakdown of some of the top items, but be sure to check out the Hiking Packing List for a more comprehensive view. Clothing Layers Layering is going to be a top consideration when hiking. You will want to be prepared for all sorts of weather so you can be comfortable in different situations. Some items may include: → Hiking Shorts → Hiking Pants → Short Sleeve Shirt → Long Sleeve Shirt / Sun Hoodie → Mid Layer Fleece → Puff Jacket (not always needed) → Packable Rain Jacket ( Columbia Watertight II ) Note that your layers should be made of moisture wicking material as they are breathable and quick drying. Footwear Having appropriate footwear will also be very important. You will want to have shoes with the necessary grip and support to keep you safe on the trail. → Hiking Shoes ( Keen Targhee ) → Hiking Socks ( Darn Tough ) Other Essentials Whether it is hiking gear, electronics, or just some miscellaneous items, here are some other essentials to bring along on hikes. → Hiking Backpack ( Osprey Talon 22 ) & Rain Cover ( Joy Walker Cover ) → Hiking Poles ( Black Diamond Trekking Poles ) → Water Bottle ( CamelBak Chute or Katadyn Filter Bottle ) → Portable Charger ( Anker PowerCore 5000mAh ) → Action Camera ( GoPro Hero ) → Energy Bars & Snacks → Hat & Sunglasses → Sunscreen & Bug Spray

In addition to the standard list above, you will also want to consider some overnight items as well. These include comfortable sleepwear such as a sweatshirt & pants, toiletry items, as well as a headlamp.

Note that the trekking company you sign up for will supply many items that you will need. These include:

  • Camping Tent
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Some Snacks

Camping on Mt Rinjani

7) Rinjani Trekking Tour Cost

Trekking up Rinjani will be one of the more expensive activities that you will take part of in Indonesia but I will say it is 100% worth it if you want to enjoy some of the best views in the country.

This will vary by tour company but for a 2-3 day summit trek, prepare to pay between $200 and $300 USD.

While it is a bit pricey, the cost usually includes a bunch of different things:

  • Transport before and after the trek, from/to the airport/boat pier/hotel on Lombok
  • Hotel for the night prior to the climb
  • All Meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
  • Water & Snacks
  • Sleeping Tent and Sleeping Bag
  • Guided Tour with Porters up and down Rinjani
  • Rinjani Entrance Fees
  • Trekking Insurance

Always be sure to ask your trekking company what is and what is not included in the price of the hike!

Rinjani Tour

Let’s now get into the trek itself. Below you will find a more detailed account of what the trail is like with some pictures to guide you along the way.

With whichever option you choose, you should plan to arrive in Lombok the day before the hike.

As mentioned you will be picked up from wherever you are staying or flying/boating into and will be driven to a hotel near the starting point.

Once you arrive at the hotel, grab some dinner and pack your essentials in a backpack. Your other luggage will be held at the hotel and you can pick it back up at the end of the hike.

Set your alarm early and get some rest before the trekking begins!

8) Rinjani Senaru Crater Rim Hike 2 Day / 1 Night

I will first go over a standard 2 day hike that only goes to the crater rim (with no summit). This is usually best for those that want to enjoy the natural beauty without overdoing the physical activity.

  • Starting Point : Senaru
  • Day 1 : Up from Senaru to Crater Rim
  • Night 1 : Overnight on Senaru Crater Rim
  • Day 2 : Down from Crater Rim to Senaru
  • Elevation Gain : 601 Meters to 2,641 Meters (+2,040 Meters) / 1,972 Feet to 8,665 Feet (+6,693 Feet)

On the first day of the Senaru Crater Rim hike, you will begin down in Senaru and start the slow ascent all the way to the rim. This is going to be a full day ascent arriving sometime in the late afternoon.

Most of the ascent will be done within the forest and trees that make up the vast part of the volcano. Because of this, you should not expect many views during the duration of the trail.

Instead you will be walking through nature and the massive trees that will surround you.

Rinjani Forest

As you make your way up you will make numerous stops at different places marked as “Pos” – aka Pos 1, Pos 2, Pos Extra, Pos 3, Pos 4.

These are simply points on the trail where you will take a rest with the group and rehydrate / refuel for the remainder of the hike up.

Once you reach Pos 2, you will enjoy a nice lunch prepared by your porters and you will probably will be joined by several monkeys as well looking for some food.

Rinjani Lunch

At some point though, those trees will disappear and you will begin to take in those vast landscape views. As you continue to climb, the views will just get better and better.

Senaru Rim Trek

Soon enough though the crater rim will be approaching. The guides do a pretty good job of pacing the group to arrive at the crater rim with plenty of time to spare for sunset. We spent a good 2 hours up by the crater, enjoying the view, and waiting for the sun to finally set.

On one side of the crater you will see Lombok, the Gili Islands, and Bali (and Mt Agung) out in the distance.

During my time on the mountain, the sunset had a cloud base as you can see in the pictures below, but for sunrise all was clear out in the distance.

On the other side you will see the Rinjani crater lake with the smaller volcano within the lake and the Rinjani summit out behind it.

Senaru Crater Rim View

Altogether it was truly one of the best viewpoints you can ask for, even though you may not be on the summit itself.

After enjoying sunset, it is time to head to your tents that will be set up for you and enjoy some dinner before calling it a night.

» Check out these Sunset Photography Tips to help you get some beautiful shots in from the crater rim!

On day 2, wake up early to head back to the crater rim to enjoy a beautiful sunrise.

While the previous day’s sunset actually had a cloud base, the sunrise was clear as can be. That is when we got to see the Gili Islands and the Bali Sea.

Mount Rinjani Sunrise

Once sunrise is fully enjoyed and you eat some breakfast, it is time to head all the way back down to the base of the hike in Senaru, the same way you came up.

The hike down will be a bit quicker, somewhere around 6 hours or so as you wont need to take as breaks and you will be going downhill instead of up. At some point lunch will be served before taking part of the last portion of the trail.

Once you reach the base, you will be picked up by a driver, who will take you back to the hotel to grab your stuff and you will then be taken to your next destination.

Lombok Views

9) Rinjani Summit Hike 2 Day / 1 Night

Next up is another 2 day hike, but in this case heading all the way up to the summit from Sembalun and back down.

  • Starting Point : Sembalun
  • Day 1 : Up to Sembalun Crater Rim
  • Night 1 : Overnight at Sembalun Crater Rim
  • Day 2 : Sunrise to Rinjani Summit, back down to Sembalun Crater Rim, down to Sembalun
  • Elevation Gain : 1,156 Meters to 3,726 Meters (+2,570 Meters) / 3,793 Feet to 12,224 Feet (+8,431 Feet)

Essentially day 1 will be spent heading up to a different side of the crater rim from Sembalun instead of Senaru.

This portion of the trail will be similar to the Senaru side though as most of the hike will be done through the forest as you break at various “Pos” stops along the way.

You will enjoy a sunset on day 1 from the Sembalun Crater Rim before waking up VERY early on day 2 to make that summit push.

At some point in the middle of the night you will wake up, get those hiking boots on, turn on the flashlight and begin the ascent towards the summit.

It is an additional 1,000+ meters / 3,000+ feet up to the summit and will take the better portion of 3 hours to complete.

Once up there though, you will be at the second highest point in all of Indonesia and the views will be unbelievable. Not only will you be able to see the crater lake from above, but you will also get 360 degree views of all of Lombok.

After enjoying the sunrise on the summit it is time to head back down to camp to relax for a bit before continuing all the way back down to Sembalun to end your trek.

Mount Rinjani Summit

10) Rinjani Summit Hike 3 Day / 2 Night

If you are trying to see more of the Rinjani area, then I would highly suggest the 3 day route that begins in Sembalun but ends in Senaru.

  • Day 2 : Sunrise to Rinjani Summit, down to Crater Lake, up to Senaru Crater Rim
  • Night 2 : Overnight on Senaru Crater Rim
  • Day 3 : Down from Crater Rim to Senaru

Day 1 will be the same as the 2 day / 1 night summit trek as you head off from Sembalun and go up to the Sembalun Crater Rim, where you will enjoy a sunset.

On day 2 you will head up to the summit for sunrise and then back down to the Sembalun Crater Rim to relax for a bit.

Here is where things would change a bit. Instead of ending the trip back down in Sembalun, you will head down to the Crater Lake itself.

Once you enjoy the crater lake for a bit, you will trek up to the opposite Senaru Crater Rim, where you will stay overnight. Day 3 will have you trekking from the Senaru Crater Rim down to Senaru to end your trek.

Note : the 4 day / 3 night option just adds a night at the bottom of the crater lake before heading up to the Senaru Crater Rim

Rinjani Crater Sunrise

11) Mount Rinjani Trekking Company

There is only one company that I can truly vouch for here and it is called Senaru Trekking .

The owner is one of the most helpful people when it comes to getting you ready for the trip and taking care of any questions you may have.

From pickup to drop-off everything went flawlessly and Senaru Trekking really knows what they are doing. The guides and porters went above and beyond and it was great getting to know them a bit better throughout the trek.

What I also really love about Senaru Trekking is that they truly care about the mountain and keeping it clean.

So much so that they actually offer you back 5% of your trip cost if you come back down the mountain with a bag of trash.

Overall, my time with Senaru Trekking was one of the best experiences I could ask for and if you are headed over to Rinjani, I would highly recommend joining them for the trek.

If you wanted to check out some other potential tour options for Mount Rinjani, below are some of the highest rated ones available:

  • 2 Day / 1 Night Rinjani Summit Hike
  • 3 Day / 2 Night Rinjani Summit Hike

Hi John - I can't speak for those travelers who say you don't need a guide/porter. But from my understanding a guide and porter are necessary. You can reach out to some local companies to get a better idea but from my understanding a guide/porter is necessary (and makes the climb much more feasible too).

Mount Rinjani Trekking Guide: Everything You Need To Know

Mount Rinjani is one of the most popular and challenging treks in Indonesia. It is located on the island of Lombok and stands at 3,726 meters tall. The Mount Rinjani trek is known for its stunning views of the crater lake, hot springs, and beautiful waterfalls. However, it is not an easy trek and requires a good level of fitness and preparation.

Ultimate Mount Rinjani Trekking Guide

In this guide, I will share with you everything you need to know about trekking Mount Rinjani (Gunung Rinjani)

Where is Mount Rinjani?

Mount Rinjani (Gunung Rinjani) is located on the Indonesian island of Lombok. It is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia. The mountain is located within the Rinjani National Park, which is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The trek to the summit takes you through lush forests, past beautiful waterfalls, and to the edge of a stunning crater lake. I have pinned the exact location of Mount Rinjani on the map below.

Booking your Mount Rinjani Trek in advance

It’s best to book in advance for your trek up Mount Rinjani so that you can take advantage of pick-up and drop-off from the airport or ferry. I recommend booking with Ali Trekking, who is one of the biggest and most organized trekking companies in Lombok. They’ve been guiding treks up Mount Rinjani for many years and have great reviews on TripAdvisor.

Ali Trekking offers one-night, two-night, and three-night treks up Mount Rinjani as well as the Crater Rim option. I did the three-night trek and recommend that one as you get to hike around the crater rim rather than just up and down from the summit. Their porters carry the camping and cooking equipment and prepare your meals while up on the mountain.

Along the way, you will encounter friendly locals, learn about the local culture, and make new friends.

The sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching the summit is unparalleled, and the memories will stay with you for a lifetime. Additionally, the trek allows you to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of modern life and reconnect with nature. It is a true escape and a chance to challenge yourself physically and mentally while experiencing the beauty of one of Indonesia’s most iconic natural wonders.

Is trekking Mount Rinjani hard?

Trekking Mount Rinjani is considered to be a challenging and strenuous trek, owing to its steep inclines, long distances, and varying altitudes. The most popular route for the trek begins from Sembalun Lawang village, and the ascent to the summit takes around two days. The first day involves a steep climb up to the Plawangan Sembalun crater rim, which is about 2,639 meters above sea level. The ascent on this day can be demanding, with a constant incline and a distance of around 11 kilometers.

On the second day, the trek continues toward the summit, which is another 3.7 kilometers from the crater rim. The final ascent to the summit is a challenging climb that involves navigating through loose rocks and scree slopes. The duration of the trek can vary depending on the fitness level of the trekker, but it usually takes around three to four days to complete the entire trek.

How many days do you need to trek Mount Rinjani?

If you’re planning to trek Mount Rinjani, there are several options to choose from depending on your fitness level and time constraints.

  • Two nights: The most popular and recommended option is the 3-day, 2-night trek, which allows you to summit the peak, visit the crater lake, and relax in the hot springs.
  • Three nights: For those with a more leisurely pace, the 4-day, 3-night trek offers the same locations with more free time to enjoy the mountain.
  • One night: The 2-day, 1-night tour from Sembalun is the most challenging option, which includes the option to summit at sunrise. However, it’s recommended to give yourself more time on the mountain if you’re not in excellent shape. The 2-day, 1-night trek from Senaru is the easiest option (but still very, very steep), providing incredible views of the crater but not reaching the summit or lake. This trek is perfect for those who want to experience Rinjani but cannot handle longer treks of more than one night.

Best time for trekking Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani trekking opens from April until January. After January the rainy season kicks in and Mount Rinjani trekking can get quite dangerous. April and May are the quietest months of the year for trekking and actually, have some of the best views as the landscape is incredibly green. The best time to climb Mount Rinjani would be in May to enjoy the best views and quieter crowds.

What are my favorite pieces of hiking gear?

There are four pieces of gear that I simply never forget when I go on a hike. These are four items that I using right now and this list gets updated every year! Here are my hiking essentials.

  • Arcteryx BETA AR Rain Jacket : This is my go-to rain jacket. It’s super light, folds down into a tiny ball, and protects brilliantly in a storm. This one never leaves my backpack.
  • Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Hiking Boots : For the best ankle support, waterproofing, and durable exterior I’m a fan of tough but light hiking boots like these Salomons for my adventures.
  • Black Diamond Head Torch : I can’t tell you how many times, I’ve arrived back from a hike unexpectedly late. I always keep this lightweight but strong headtorch in my bag for the unexpected.
  • Darn Tough Socks : These are the most comfortable hiking socks I’ve ever worn and last for years. They also have a lifetime warranty and you just send them in with a hole and they replace it no questions asked.

How to get to Lombok

Senaru is in the North of Lombok. This is a small town most trekkers base themselves in before and after their trekking adventures. I arrived in Lombok via ferry and headed straight north with three other friends. There are also flights directly to Lombok from Bali. Once you arrive to the airport or ferry port, you will need a private transfer or moped to reach the northern villages of Senaru or Sembalun to begin your Mount Rinjani Trek.

My Mount Rinjani Trekking Experience

We began our Mount Rinjani trekking experience crammed in the back of a truck with all the gear bouncing around. We wound through the mountainous roads of Senaru, crammed tightly by our heavy load until we arrived at the check-in counter. Here we signed our names and found out that there were 150 other people trekking that same day.

The trek began through some quiet farm fields as we felt the full force of the Indonesian sun. There was no shade and we were at the full mercy of the piercing heat. The reality of the trek began to hit us after an hour, knowing that we had 6 left today alone.

Lunch-time on day 1 was at a random shed with a bunch of other tourists around. Our guide laid out an orange tarp and we sprawled out, looking like we were on our way down after three days rather than fresh on day one. Lunch was rice, chicken, and vegetables with some local tea.

For each meal, our guides cooked rice or a noodle dish that was actually really tasty, especially considering they were carrying all of the cooking utensils, spices, sauces, and ingredients.

For the next 4-5 hours, we made our way along the trail up some mildly steep hills. This section was relatively long but more enduring rather than acutely difficult. The most surprising part of the hike on day one was the diverse scenery.

At times we felt as if we were inside a mysterious forest and at others, we were in a canyon, rocks on the floor and monkeys looking down on us. I definitely didn’t expect the inside of a volcanic crater to look anything other than a few bushes and some rocks but I couldn’t have been more wrong.

We arrived an hour before sunset at our camping spot. On the edge of an epic cliff, we pitched our tent, clouds well below us. The campsites are not clean, that’s the first thing we noticed. Trash lays all around, and toilet paper and human feces are scattered throughout the campsite and the surrounding areas.

It isn’t the guide’s fault or the trekkers really. For such a large-scale tourism operation the local authorities need to take responsibility and pay porters to carry out the trash and it would be my recommendation to have a dedicated drop toilet rather than having people dig holes everywhere and subsequently leave their trash wherever they please.

Trash aside, our camping spot was magnificent. We sat on the cliff edge watching the sun go down over the sulfur lake in the center of the volcano. We felt pretty good about ourselves after the first day but knew that we would be waking up at 2 am to begin the pilgrimage to the Mount Rinjani summit.

At 2 am we rolled out of our tents and enjoyed a pancake and coffee prepared by our porters and guide. After a few deep breaths of preparation and we went on the predicted 3-hour pilgrimage to the Mount Rinjani Summit.

This was the most intense period of the three-day Mount Rinjani trekking experience. With our head torches on, we battled to find our footing on the fine volcanic sand that paved the way. It was a case of two steps forward and one step back, which can get not only physically draining but mentally exhausting.

As we climbed higher and higher, the temperature began to drop. Our skimpy gloves and jacket our homestay owner had given us no longer kept us warm. The freezing wind was unforgiving and whipped across our faces. Our only warmth was hiding behind rocks or to keep moving onwards and upwards.

Along the way, we passed a couple who were crying and scared without their guide as the wind threw them about on the ridge. We passed others huddled behind rocks, taking a respite from the wild winds. Others marched on past us at an amiable pace. But the beauty of the pilgrimage is that whether you arrived first or last we were all destined for the same destination, and what a view it would be.

My sister and I arrived at the top, relieved the trek was over but astounded by the view. For the past four hours, we had been so focused on clambering up the mountain we had only stopped for brief moments to look at the view, which had been covered in clouds. Now at the top of Mount Rinjani, we could only look out in silence, in awe of the scale of the landscape and the scale of our achievement throughout the last 24 hours.

The climb down was much easier although with each step blisters and a bit of quadricep burn began to make the battle a little tougher. Plenty of slips later and some nice views inside the crater we made our way back to camp in just under a couple of hours. However, it was no time to rest!

After a quick breakfast, we packed up our gear and began clambering down the ridge towards the sulfur lake and the hot springs. As we had walked up in the cold hours earlier we had been dreaming of hot springs. However, now the hot sun was making the hot springs a little less desirable.

Nevertheless, we scrambled down the rocky path toward the lake. Looking out across the lake towards the active volcano inside of a volcano was mind-blowing! What wonderland was I in?

A short walk from the lake we found the natural hot springs. Temperatures of 40+ degrees meant we were steaming in the water and under the hot sun. It was an oven but the water felt so great on our feet and skin after the cold conditions earlier that morning.

We didn’t want to leave the hot springs. However, we had a 3-hour hike ahead of us to climb back to the top of the rim on the other side of the lake to camp. This was a painful part of the day. The legs were heavy we had been hiking more than not in the last 24 hours and it was starting to take its toll but our spirits remained high.

mt rinjani summit trek

We arrived at the top of the rim and many others had already set up camp. We had run out of water due to a bit of communication error and bad planning by our guides, which meant we had to keep going lower for another hour to a natural water source. Our group was a little ticked about this as it meant more walking and no sunset on the rim. Shit happens and we laughed about it later although our guide wasn’t the best at delivering that news!

We ended up camping at a random spot surrounded by forest but we were all pretty tired so we ate and fell asleep straight away.

Our final day was just a straight trek down the hill. The burn in the quads was intense but we were in the shade of the forest canopy for most of the day. As we exited the hike after more than three hours we made one last stop at the coffee plantation, with a great view from above of Tiu Kelep.

It was an epic three days and something I definitely recommend if you are up for a challenge!

WHERE TO STAY IN NORTHERN LOMBOK

If you are visiting attractions in the north such as Tiu Kelep or Mount Rinjani you should choose one of the three accommodations in the ‘ Northern ‘ section below.

  • Jeeva Santai Villas – Luxury Villa : Great location on the beautiful Mangsit Beach but also within driving distance of Tiu Kelep and Mount Rinjani. It is a location that offers the best of both worlds.
  • Hakiki Inn Bungalows  – Value: Set on the edge of rice fields with the jungle feel but the comfort of a private bungalow.
  • Blue Mountain Cottage – Budget (but also value) : This is where I stayed. The room was very basic but it was comfortable enough with a basic private bathroom.

WHERE TO STAY IN THE SOUTHERN REGION OF LOMBOK

If you are staying in the south to enjoy the beaches and surf in Kuta, Lombok you should choose one of the three accommodations in the ‘ Southern ‘ section below.

  • Harmony Villas – Luxury : The beautiful white theme throughout the property contrasts against the emerald green pool and plants. The villas are laid out impeccably and the best part about this 4-star villa is that it actually isn’t as expensive as it looks.
  • Martas Windows   – Value/Luxury : This place is incredibly beautiful. Bungalow-style villas surround the modern pool at this amazing property. For less than $80 a night, you can get yourself what would cost hundreds of dollars in most other countries at Martas Windows .
  • Boogie Hostel Kuta Lombok – Budget : The Boogie Hostel is everything you ask for in a hostel. It’s super modern and clean and has lots of chill spaces as well as lockers for your gear and blinds for privacy at your dorm.

HOW TO GO MOUNT RINJANI TREKKING

Arriving by boat from Bali to Bangsal Harbour in North Lombok is the easiest jump-off point to then make the journey from Bangsal to the base of Rinjani in Senaru, the main hub for anyone wishing to take on this challenge.

It’s very easy to find a private taxi or a motorbike to rent at Bangsal Harbour.

Expect to pay around 400,000 IDR total for a private taxi to Senaru. You can also rent motorbikes/scooters in Bangsal for approximately 60,000 IDR per day.

The distance from Bangsal Harbour to Mount Rinjani jump-off point in Senaru is 60km and it’s approximately a 2-hour drive.

WHERE TO STAY BEFORE & AFTER THE TREK

Blue Mountain Cottage is a small homestay in Senaru village which is the beginning point of the Rinjani trekking tour.

The a/c rooms are only 100,000 IDR per night. With two people to a room that’s the same price as a coffee where I am from!

The owner of the homestay was rather humorous and was tremendously helpful in organizing our Mount Rinjani trekking. At this point, I was super excited about our incoming adventure!

WHERE TO BOOK YOUR MOUNT RINJANI TOUR

There are dozens of tour companies that can organize the Mount Rinjani trekking located in the main towns on Lombok including Sengiggi, Mataram, Senaru, and Kuta Lombok.

However, from my experience, it’s best to organize your trip well in advance and the best option is to book online with a professional and experienced tour operator and guarantee a fixed price for your trek.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE TOUR:

  • Return transfers by air-conditioned coach
  • Entrance fee to Gunung Rinjani National Park
  • Licensed English-speaking mountain guide
  • Local porters
  • 3 meals a day (breakfast, lunch, dinner), snacks, fruits, and unlimited water
  • All camping equipment (double size tent, sleeping bag, air bed mattress, etc.)

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED IN THE TOUR:

  • Personal expenses
  • Domestic/international flights
  • Meals before and after the trek departure
  • Helicopter in case of an accident
  • Tips and gratuities

The Mt. Rinjani trek requires you to have a good level of fitness and the ability to walk long distances. It’s also strongly recommended to have travel insurance that covers high-altitude hiking.

MOUNT RINJANI TREKKING – DAY 1

The Mount Rinjani adventure began early morning when a driver and our guide met us at the homestay in Senaru to take us to the starting point.

We piled into the back of his ute and drove through some villages for around an hour before arriving at the official entrance office of Mount Rinjani National Park.

We had to provide our names and passport number as a safety requirement so everyone was accounted for at the end of the trek. And then we were off. With a clear view of the volcano in the distance, I was anxious to see what surreal landscapes lay ahead.

The first three hours of the trek were quite mellow, and some thick fog made its way up the mountainside, cooling us down with its breeze. We stopped to rest for an hour while the porters were quick to whip up a big serving of nasi goreng for lunch!

HIKING TO THE MOUNT RINJANI CRATER RIM

It was a further three hours of trekking through some slightly harder terrain before reaching the Mount Rinjani crater rim. This is where we set up camp for one night. Well, by we I mean the porters since they insisted on setting up our tents and preparing dinner for us!

We wandered down a ridge trail to find a good viewpoint for sunset overlooking Mount Rinjani and we were spoilt with an incredible view of the lake and another volcano inside the lake – volcano inception!

The sun was setting behind the opposite ridge from where we were standing, saturating the sky with bright reds and warm, delicate oranges.

Looking back at the campsite was an unreal sight of colorful tents perched on the Mount Rinjani Crater Rim. Talk about a room with a view!

Our guide informed us that we were to start the trek to the summit of Mt Rinjani at 2:30 am the next morning. So, we enjoyed the meal the porters prepared for us and then made our way to the tents to rest up for the big finale.

MOUNT RINJANI TREKKING – DAY 2

Before I knew it I was being woken up by our guide, handing me a banana pancake through the zipper of my tent. It was 2 am and time to start the hike to the summit for sunrise.

One hour in and the five of us had already managed to split up. I must admit, it was not an easy climb. The temperature was below freezing and the wind was howling across the narrow ridge that we had to walk across.

There were lava tubes and large rocks to take cover out of the wind to warm up. The last kilometer to the summit of Mount Rinjani was the most challenging as the ground surface was covered in loose rocks… I was literally taking one step forward, then sliding back down two steps.

The sun was just poking up over the horizon as I reached the summit three hours later. My fingers were frozen and I was struggling to take photos, hoping for the sun to warm me up soon. The five of us regrouped at the summit and we climbed down into the Mount Rinjani crater to get some shots.

It seemed the majority of other trekkers had already started to descend as the cold temperatures and strong winds were almost unbearable. We were the last group to descend from the summit of Mount Rinjani… but it was definitely worth spending more time at the top to witness the sheer beauty as the sun lit up the inside of the volcano.

MOUNT RINJANI CRATER

We arrived back down at our campsite on the crater rim at around 9 am. We had to eat breakfast quickly before making our way down into the crater towards the lake.

At this point, my leg muscles were tightening up, which was not a good feeling knowing we had another full day’s hike ahead.

2 to 3 hours later we made it down to Mount Rinjani Lake where there is a natural volcanic hot spring. We spent some time here to recharge our batteries and to shower off the sweat!

Our porters once again prepared us some mie goreng noddles for lunch and then we set off to climb to the crater rim on the opposite side of Mount Rinjani lake.

The views on this side of the crater were spectacular. The blue lake was glowing and the dense jungle created a naturally moody scene. It’s hard to believe there was another volcano… growing inside a larger volcano… which was then surrounded by a lake. I felt like I was on a Jurassic Park movie set!

HIKING OUT OF THE CRATER

We made it to the top of the Mount Rinjani crater rim 2 to 3 hours later, which is where we thought we were camping for the night… but it so happened our porters had continued on walking down to another campsite to set up.

We were pretty disappointed because we wanted to see the sunset from the Mount Rinjani crater rim, but we didn’t have much choice but to follow our guides to the next camp.

We trekked down for another 1.5 hours before reaching the campsite. Upon arrival, I was absolutely exhausted, so I skipped dinner and went straight to bed.

MOUNT RINJANI TREK – DAY 3

The following morning was the last day of the trek and it was a beautiful walk down through the shaded forest. I spotted lots of monkeys swinging around impressively from tree to tree, wishing I could swing around with them!

The end of the trek ended at the road that lead us down to our homestay. We were all so hyped to have accomplished the 3-day Mount Rinjani trek and we tipped our guide and porters for their efforts!

  • Trek views: Mount Rinjani is a prominent part of the Rinjani National Park, and the trek promises astonishing views of the crater lake, hot springs, lush forests and amazing waterfalls.
  • Difficulty level: The trek isn’t as easy as it seems and will also challenge your physical strength, but based on that, you can choose the duration and length of your trek. We advise you to start a fitness routine a few weeks before your trip to build stamina.
  • Trek options : Depending on your time restraints and fitness level, you can choose from the easy option of 2 2-day trek from Senaru to moderate and difficult options of a 3 and 4-day trek from Sembalun.
  • Best time to visit: Trekking is open from April to December. It is closed from January to March due to the heavy rains as the routes become slippery and dangerous. The best time for Mount Rinjani trekking is May when the landscapes are bright and green and the weather is pleasant and perfect for better views.

How to Get to Mount Rinjani

1. know the route, lombok airport transfers.

Since Mount Rinjani is on Lombok Island, you can fly directly to Lombok International Airport or fly to Bali and take a boat from there to the island of Lombok.

From Lombok Airport, you will have to embark on a 3-hour-long journey to reach the base of Mount Rinjani. This thrilling ride encircles almost half of the island to get to the mountain.

Address : Sembalun Lawang, Sembalun, East Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia ( map )

Aerial view of Mount Rinjani and crater lake

The common question comes down to where to start the trekking.

Senaru or Sembalun?

But the more relevant question should be how many days you have to complete the Mount Rinjani hike.

Let’s simplify the day-wise options for you.

2. 2 Days 1 Night

2d1n mount rinjani crater rim trekking tour.

If you have only two days to experience the Rinjani trail then the question arises if you want to go for an easy hike to tick off Mount Rinjani from the bucket list or take the difficult route to satisfy your adventurous soul.

The easier ascend is via Sembalun, which is through flat meadows overlooking the Lombok’s northern coastline and Gili Islands.

This route takes you to the base of the Rinjani summit and back to Sembalun.

The route via Senaru is comparatively challenging as it crosses rocky areas and steep climbs through the tropical rainforest.

From Senaru, you will not touch the summit, but watch it from far away as it will take you to the beautiful Crater Rim, where you camp overnight and enjoy the sunrise views through Lake Sengara Anak.

Since both Senaru and Sembalun are on different sides of the mountain, it is practically impossible to cover both in 2 days.

For the tour option of 2 days and 1 night , the popular route is the Senaru one amongst trekkers to enjoy Mount Rinjani.

Tip : If you don’t feel physically prepared for the more intense 3 or 4-day tour, we highly recommend this option.

3. 3 Days 2 Nights

3d2n mount rinjani summit trekking tour.

For the trek duration of more than 2 days, you don’t have to worry about choosing between Senaru and Sembalun as both are covered in a 3 or 4-day tour .

This is the best Mount Rinjani trekking package widely chosen and recommended by travellers.

Three days is precisely what you need to complete the Rinjani volcano trekking experience in a wholesome way.

From cascading waterfalls and hot springs to beautiful lakes, you can explore the crater rim, climb to the Rinjani summit, and admire the splendid views along the way.

With this option, you can start from either Senaru or Sembalun and finish on another side.

The only difference is that if you start from Sembalun, you will hit the summit earlier in the trip.

4. 4 Days 3 Nights

4d3n mount rinjani summit trekking tour.

The route for 4 days and 3 nights is almost the same as the 3-day option, but during the 4-day trip, you get the chance to explore the mountain leisurely.

Choosing this tour option depends on your time constraints and if you are willing to climb the summit at a medium pac,e taking your own sweet time.

Active travellers seeking to conquer Mount Rinjani while experiencing its landscapes in detail usually select this package option .

Now that you know all the Mount Rinjani trekking information and the various tour options, you can decide accordingly.

Day-by-Day Trekking Highlights

Reach Lombok Island as early as possible so that you can explore the beautiful waterfalls of Sedang Gile and Tiu Kelep on the north of Lombok. Later, prepare yourself for the epic adventure of Rinjani volcano trekking.

You will start your ascent from Senaru or Sembalun, passing through lush rainforests and open grasslands. On reaching the crater rim campsite, you can catch the stunning sunset and be rewarded with a night sky filled with stars.

If you are on the Senaru route, you will wake up early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the crater and descend back to Senaru later. And if you are a trekker on the Sembalun route, prepare for a tiring but rewarding day as you climb the summit.

On day three, you will descend through the dense forest and spend some tranquil moments at the volcanic lake of Segara Anak which offers hot springs to soothe your tired muscles.

On day 4, you will head back to the base of the other side of the mountain as you take in the beauty of the Rinjani National Park for one last time.

While preparing for the trek, don’t forget to put these packing essentials in your bag.

But also ensure you don’t overpack, as carrying an extra kilo during the trek will get you exhausted.

  • Lightweight backpack : Carry a backpack which is big enough to carry all the necessary items for the hike but should also be lightweight so that you don’t tire your shoulders throughout the trek.
  • Hiking boots : Those usual walking shoes won’t work for this trek. You will need a pair of sturdy hiking shoes that won’t let you fall.
  • Lightweight clothes : Pack very light clothes for the climb as it will be hot during the day and also because carrying them is easy.
  • Warm jacket : The nights on the summit are chilly, and you might need an extra layer to save yourself from the cold.
  • A water-resistant jacket or poncho : You might need them just to save yourself from light rain or misty nights.
  • Socks: These are important to avoid getting blisters. Don’t forget to pack extra pairs of socks as well.
  • Flip-flops : You will need the flip-flops to free your feet during the night at the campsite.
  • Toiletries : Toothbrush, toothpaste, sun-block cream, wet wipes, and napkins
  • First-aid kit: Remember to pack your daily medicines and some band-aids and cotton swabs for any emergency.
  • Water bottle : Because you need to keep yourself hydrated, be sure to carry a bottle.
  • High-protein snacks : Pack nuts, cookies or protein bars for your hunger quests during the hike.
  • Torch/headlamp : You might need a light source for the night hike and your tent. Your phone torch should also work.
  • Extra items : Such as an insect repellant, power bank, swimsuit, lip gloss or any other personal stuff.

Also, be a responsible traveller and remember to keep the trash with you during the trek.

Carry a disposable bag along if needed and store your trash in it until you find a garbage can.

Mount Rinjani

Mount rinjani: 3 days trekking on indonesia's most picturesque volcano, summary mount rinjani indonesia - summary.

In 1257, on the Island of Lombok, Mount Rinjani exploded leaving a hole the size of Manhattan.

The explosion covered neighbouring Bali with rocks and ash, and eventually covered the world with sulphur. Today, Rinjani is still highly active, yet around 100,000 climb it every year owing to its verdant jungle trails, azure crater lake, and ongoing volcanic rumblings.

Climbing Mount Rinjani Indonesia - Height and Distance

Natural mount rinjani indonesia - natural height.

3,726m (12,224ft)

Natural Mount Rinjani Indonesia - Hiking Period

There are two trail options up Rinjani. Option 1 takes you to the summit and requires about 3 days to complete, and Option 2 only leads to the crater rim, and takes about half a day to complete.

Difficulty Mount Rinjani Indonesia - Hiking Difficulty

Difficulty mount rinjani indonesia - terrain.

Of the two popular trail options, one provides a scenic walk through rainforests and a visibly changing landscape, while the other requires a greater degree of physical fitness to attempt. Both meet at the crater rim, from where there’s a single trail up to the summit. A combination of the two options is also widely used, with trekkers ascending to the crater rim via one option and returning down the other.

First Option:

Going uphill from Sembalun takes you through grassy savannahs where the sun is harsh and the inclines gradually become steep as you approach the crater rim. The most difficult parts are the walk up from the crater rim to the summit, and later from the rim down to the crater lake on day 2. Going down to Senaru on day 3 is a little easier, and that’s when some dramatic landscape presents itself with rolling grasslands giving way to exotic rainforests in the last section.

The first part of the walk starts from Sembalum and winds through windy grasslands offering some amazing scenery all around and is relatively a breeze. By starting at a higher elevation you get to avoid the humidity of the rain forests and the walk is pleasant, except perhaps on hot days when the sun decides to beat down on you throughout.

The climb starts becoming steeper from POS 3 to the Pelawangan Sembalun base camp (crater rim). Anticipate a steep 3-hour climb. Tall trees in some stretches offer shade to make it a little easier for you to push through. Navigate this section slowly and steadily to make sure you get to the rest stop in time for the overnight break, while your legs remain ready for the next stretch up to the summit the next morning.

The trek from the crater rim base camp to the summit will test your physical fitness. The trail to the summit takes you over loose volcanic scree, which you will need to navigate in the darkness of the night, whilst fighting the cold winds. Walking over the scree will be like taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back, as the loose rocks and sand make it nearly impossible for your feet to get a firm grip on the ground.

On the way down though, the same scree will be your friend – helping you slide down slowly as every step you take sinks in deep. The climb down from the rim into the crater towards the lake is another steep descent but becomes flatter and easier as you approach the lake.

Finally getting from the Pelawangan Senaru base camp to Senaru Village is a steep, rocky and gravelly path that will require your caution in gaining balance and enduring the strain on your legs. Soon the rocks and gravel give way to vast savannahs though, and to tropical rainforests in the final stretch of the hike.

Second Option:

The easier of the two, this route starts from the village of Senaru and brings you to the crater rim after a 6-hour climb. The first part of the climb is through lush mountain forest, which slowly eases away as you get to the crater rim to set camp for the night.

Difficulty Mount Rinjani Indonesia - Weather

The Rinjani trails are closed from January to March due to the rainy season, so the best time to climb is during the dry months of April to November. Even though the temperatures in the lower altitudes range between 23˚C and 26˚C (73.4˚F and 78.8˚F), this changes when above 2,000m (6,561.68 ft). The nights can be extremely cold at the base camp, even reaching freezing levels at the summit.

Difficulty Mount Rinjani Indonesia - Equipment

You’ll need basic equipment to complete this trek. Make sure you’ve got trekking poles and gloves, and do not hesitate to ask your guide for walking sticks if not. You should definitely carry high-calorie protein snacks, pain relief creams/sprays and other necessary medication in your backpack. Also, make sure to bring clothing for all weather.

Facilities Mount Rinjani Indonesia - Support Facilities

At the trailhead, you’ll find a registration kiosk, food, and potable water.

Along the trail there are rest stop shelters, such as huts, pavilions, etc. Food and water are only available on the trail form your guides and porters.

The summit base camp has toilets/ bathrooms, and shelters for overnight rest. The only food available is that which you or your porters brought with you.

The Mount Rinjani trek is popular so it’s highly unlikely you’ll be doing this climb alone. Though the risk of theft is minimal, it is advised that climbers keep their precious belongings like cameras, passports etc. in their possession at all times.

Volcanic activity: Mount Rinjani is an active volcano so you’ll need to stay up-to-date on local developments before embarking on the trek.

Altitude: It is recommended to climb slowly so that you get accustomed to the altitude. Stopping for a few deep breaths every couple of steps will help ease/avoid any discomfort.

Slips and falls: The summit section of this trek is notoriously difficult due to the slippery terrain and steep climb. Lives have been lost on this trek due to an underestimation of the dangers along the way, so make sure you are prepared.

This trek is suited to travellers wishing to make the most of this beautiful National Park, from schools and outdoor clubs to families, friends, couples and honeymooners seeking an adventurous getaway.

Personal Journeys and Shared Experiences

To climb a big mountain is to embark on a personal journey, to climb with a group of friends or someone you love is to share a life changing experience, one that will live-on through the memory of shared experience. Spending four days away from the stresses of modern-day life, amongst the raw beauty of volcanoes, rainforests and lakes is something many people yearn for deep within their souls. 21st century life can be tough and the demands of deadlines, emails, conferences and 24/7 availability can take its toll. Our Mount Rinjani 4 Day / 3 Night Summit package is designed for people wishing to reconnect with nature, and take a break from the stresses of modern day-life. It’s also ideal for school groups, clubs and yoga retreats wishing to embark on a voyage of discovery together.

“If I get to the top, I think anything will be possible!”

Rinjani Dawn Adventures has successfully run 4 day / 3 night Mt Rinjani treks for a variety of groups and organisations, couples and individuals. In 2017 we ran a fundraising trek for the Pelita Foundation , a not for profit organisation based in Gerupuk, South Lombok. This involved taking a group of 15 school children aged 12-17 up Mt Rinjani, in a bid to raise funds for their education and ongoing development. The Pelita trek was a huge success, not only raising enough money for a new school, but also imbuing these courageous children with a genuine sense of accomplishment and confidence. A documentary film of the children’s amazing achievement can be found on our YouTube channel here . Since then, we have run multiple treks for school and youth organisations, as well as yoga retreats and honeymooners wanting to experience an ultimate adventure together. Safety and professional planning are fundamental to all of these expeditions.

Transport and Lodging Before the Trek

We include transportation from hotels in North Lombok in the price of the package. If you are staying on Lombok and want to spend a night in Senaru before the trek, we can arrange transport for the day before (and assist with accommodation). If you want to be collected on the morning of the trek, our driver will collect you from your hotel at a pre-arranged time (early!). More information about transport and accommodation can be found on our FAQ page .

lombok rinjani lake

Route 1: Start in Senaru Village & finish in Sembalun Village. Summit on final day (4)

Day 1 - senaru > senaru crater rim.

  • 7:30am – RDA guide briefing & equipment issue at the RDA office, Senaru. We send an equipment and packing guide when you make your booking along with additional information about the trek. At our office you will be able to borrow things such ponchos / rain jackets, gloves and hats, where available.
  • 8:15am – Visitor registration at the Rinjani Trek Centre, Senaru. Rinjani Dawn Adventures pay the park entrance fee, but it is a requirement for all to sign the log book before the trek commences.
  • 8:40am – Begin your 4 day / 3 night Mt Rinjani adventure from the start-point in Senaru village (601m elevation).
  • Hike for roughly 60 minutes, reach Bunut Ngengkang (Pos 1, 750m). Rest for 10-15 minutes.
  • Hike for roughly 2 hours, reach Montong Satas (Pos 2, 1500m). 1.5 hour lunch break. Your guide and porters will prepare a hot meal using fresh ingredients whilst you rest and re-hydrate.
  • Hike for roughly 1 hour, reach Mondokan Lokak (Pos 3, 2000m). Rest at Pos 3 for 20 minutes before continuing to the crater rim campsite.
  • It takes around 2 hours to hike to the crater rim from Pos 3, depending on fitness levels and how many impromptu breaks we take.
  • Arrive at Senaru Crater Rim (2641m). Whilst the team set up camp and start preparing the evening meal we suggest changing into warm clothes, as the temperature can drop significantly when the sun goes down. Senaru Crater Rim has some amazing views of the mountain, lake and neighbouring Bali, so it’s well worth packing a camera.
  • After dinner you can sit up and watch the stars or hit the sack after a demanding first day.

Senaru Crater Rim > Lake

  • 8:30am – Leisurely breakfast at the crater rim campsite.
  • 9:30am – Pack-up camp and commence descent down to lake Segara Anak. The walk down to the lake from the crater rim is steep in parts, with some scrambling sections. Your guide will ensure you descend in as controlled and safe manner as possible, but it is important to pay attention and listen to instructions from your guide and porters.
  • 12:30pm – Arrive at the crater lake. Have a rest and lunch by the lake.
  • 1:30pm – Visit the thermal springs that are located 100m down from the crater rim. Visiting the thermal springs is not compulsory, if you would rather lounge by the lake and read a book this is totally ok. But many people find the warm thermal pools very relaxing and great for stiff muscles.
  • 3pm – Walk back to the lake campsite from the thermal springs.
  • The rest of the afternoon is yours. You can swim in the lake, relax under a tree, explore the lake shores and admire the stunning Mt Barujari (the active volcano that rises out of the lake).
  • Dinner, rest and sleep!

Lake > Sembalun Crater Rim

  • 8:30am – Relaxed breakfast at lake Segara Anak campsite
  • 9:30am – Bathe at the thermal springs, should you wish.
  • 10:30am – Pack-up tents and have a coffee and snack before departing the lake.
  • 11am – Start walking up the eastern ridges towards Sembalun Crater Rim (Plawangan Sembalun). The route to Sembalun Crater Rim from lake Segara Anak is easy to begin with, but gets progressively harder towards the top. There are some steep sections, which involve some scrambling over rocky sections. But there will be plenty of time to stop for rests, and your guide will be on hand to assist where required.
  • 3-4pm – Arrive at Sembalun Crater Rim campsite.
  • 5:30pm – Early dinner, as you will be getting up very early the following morning to go to the summit of Mount Rinjani.

Sembalun Crater Rim > Summit > Sembalun

  • 2am – Wake-up, have a hot drink and bite to eat.
  • 2:30am – Leave basecamp and start the ascent to Mount Rinjani’s summit. Please note you will be starting in the dark, so it will be necessary to use torches and stay within the group. It’s important also to wear sufficient warm clothing, including hats and gloves. These can be taken off if you get too warm, but it’s important not to start the hike cold. Most people warm-up pretty quickly during the uphill sections!
  • The ascent to Mount Rinjani’s summit takes 3-4 hours on average. Apart from one section of ridgeline, the ground is soft (as it comprises sandy volcanic tephra and small loose rocks). This means the going is slow but steady. We recommend trekking poles for all of our packages, but they will come in especially handy during the climb to the summit.
  • 5:30am – Our intention is to reach the summit in time to watch sunrise. But this will depend on individual fitness levels and weather conditions. Your guide will be carrying a hot thermos for short stops on the way to the summit, but it is generally best to keep moving (as it can be cold in the early morning).
  • 6:30am – Walk back down to basecamp (Plawangan Sembalun). This usually takes 2 hours.
  • 9:30am – Start the walk off the mountain towards Semablun Village. Although this is mostly a downhill journey, it still takes time. The group will take scheduled breaks, and impromptu hydration and rest breaks.
  • 12:30pm – Lunch.
  • 2:30pm – Arrive back in Sembalun and meet awaiting RDA transport. It is possible that you will arrive either before or after this time, but 2:30 pm is our average.
  • 4pm – Arrive back at Rinjani Dawn Adventures office, Senaru. Say farewell to your porters and guide. Redeem any luggage you have left with us at our office. Transport to onward location.

Tour plan route 2: start in sembalun & finish in senaru. summit on second day, day 1 – sembalun > sembalun crater rim(4).

  • Transport from the RDA office in Senaru Village to Sembalun (we will collect you from Sembalun, should you be staying there).
  • Registration at RTC Sembalun.
  • Start your 4 day / 3 night Rinjani Summit trek from Sembalun village (969m).
  • Trek for approximately 7 hours. There will be multiple rest-stops along the way, including a 1-1.5 hour lunch break, where your porters and guides will cook some delicious food.
  • 4-5pm – Arrive at Sembalun Crater Rim campsite (also referred to as Plawangan Sembalun & “basecamp”). This sits around 2684m elevation, depending on where on the ridgeline we set-up camp for the night.

Sembalun Crater Rim > Summit > Lake

  • 2am – Guides will wake you up with a hot drink, and a light breakfast.
  • 2:30am – Leave basecamp, and start the climb to Mount Rinjani summit. It’s important to wear warm layers when we start, including hats and gloves. These can be taken-off as you warm-up, but as we will be leaving early in the morning it is likely to be cold, especially if there is a wind blowing.
  • It takes on average three to four hours to reach the summit. The going will be slow but steady, as the terrain is steep and soft (volcanic sand / tephra).
  • 5:30-6apm – We aim to reach the summit as the sun is coming-up over Lombok. Experience the amazing sense of achievement of reaching one of Indonesia’s highest peaks. Admire the views over the crater lake towards Bali, as well as neighbouring Sumbawa to the West. Have a hot cup of coffee / tea, and a snack.
  • 7am – Return to basecamp. This is far easier than the walk up, and takes between 1 and 2 hours.
  • 9am – Breakfast on Plawangan Sembalun. This will be leisurely, as the second part of the day will just involve descending down to the crater lake. Have a rest, and perhaps a little nap.
  • 12pm – Lunch, followed by packing-up camp, and starting the walk down to the crater lake. The walk down to the crater lake is steep in parts, so you will have to take-care and ask your guide for a hand if you are not confident.
  • 3pm (approx.) – Arrive at lake Segara Anak. Have a rest and snack whilst the porters and guide set-up camp.
  • 3:30-4pm - Visit the thermal springs that are a short 15-20 minute walk from the campsite. Bathe and relax in these warm waters.
  • 6pm – Dinner by the lake.

Lake > Senaru Crater Rim

  • 8:30am – Wake-up, have breakfast.
  • 9:30am – Explore the lake and go to the hot springs for a shower / bath.
  • 11:30am – Pack-up camp and commence hike to Senaru Crater Rim (with rest breaks en route).
  • 3:30pm – Arrive at Senaru Crater Rim, set up camp.
  • 6pm – Dinner at Senaru Crater Rim, watch the sunset.
  • Evening stargazing and sleep!

Senaru Crater Rim > Senaru

  • 7:30am – Breakfast at Senaru Crater Rim.
  • 9am – Commence walk off the mountain, back to Senaru village and Rinjani Dawn Adventures office./li>
  • The walk down from Senaru Crater Rim involves 1 to 1½hrs on the open hill, and 3-4 hours walking down through the forest (on an established path). You will take regular rest breaks for snacks and rehydration.
  • We will stop for lunch in the rainforest, breaking for roughly one hour.
  • 2pm – Arrive at RTC Senaru. Depending on how many breaks you have taken, we expect you will arrive back at our office between 2 and 3pm. When back at our office you will be able to bid farewell to your porters and guide, and redeem any luggage you have left with us.

Trekking Mt. Rinjani is no easy feat!It requires stamina and mental endurance. That being said, thousands of adventurers summit Mount Rinjani each year to experience the spectacular views that if offers. While this trek is not long, it is important to be prepared. Even if you are simply hiking to the crater rim, it’s important that you bring the correct gear for this trek. If you plan to summit Mt. Rinjani, you will be reaching 3726 meters. This means, even in the hottest points of the summer, it is can be freezing at the summit. Hiking Rinjani means you should have the appropriate clothing.

While insurance is not required to go on this trek, it make be something you should look into. Indonesia’s health care system is notoriously expensive, and having peace of mind may make your trek more enjoyable. 2-3 day hiking insurance plans are incredibly reasonable.

Safety is our priority when hiking Mt. Rinjani.Your guide is a trained professional and is constantly looking out for the safety of our customers. However, this is still the wild outdoors, and dangerous things can happen.Lombok is prone to earthquakes, which in-turn can cause mudslides. It’s important to follow your guides advice if he/she decides the continue on a different path or advises against certain sections. We are constantly updated with trail conditions from the countless porters on the mountain and do everything we can to assure our customers a safe trip.

The best time to climb Mount Rinjani is during the dry season which runs from April to October.

Mount Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia, before it formed a caldera in the west and east, Mount Rinjani was named Mount Samalas, with a height of 4200 m. And now Mount Samalas is named Mount Rinjani. This is the peak of Mount Rinjani, with an altitude of 3726 m above sea level after a major eruption in 1257.

Mount Rinjani has a very beautiful and spectacular view, because in the middle of the caldera there is a lake and a volcano, which is now named Gunung Baru Jari.

We have hiking tours going everyday.Solo hikers are welcome, and you will be joining another group.

We do our best to pair you with someone of your age and hiking level. To be frank, most of the porters and guides that travel up the Mt.Rinjani daily are one big network of friends since childhood.our team always have a solution for solo hikers as long as national parks tickets are still available.

The temperature in the day is around 15 – 25 degree Celsius at and below the rims. At night, the temperature at the Rim is usually below 10 degree Celsius. At times, it can be near freezing especially towards the summit.

Most hikers leave their bags at our office. There is no reason to carry everything you have with you to the top of Mt. Rinjani. We have safe places to keep bags. We always stop back at the office to change drivers, so you can pick up your bags then.

Mt.Rinjani is a tough trek, but it is not specifically dangerous. On any volcano trek, you must be careful because danger is everywhere. But Mt.Rinjani has less cliff like edges than other mountains. You are rarely on serious cliff edges when going up and down.It is very steep, and requires patience and focus, but is nothing like the cliffs of the Alps,Rockies,or Himalayas. The danger most lies in people’s body limits and whether or not they can make it to the summit at 2 a.m.It is tough on stamina. Also, coming down Mt. Rinjani without hiking sticks can pose risks to knees and joints.Be careful, but you are with a group and never alone.

Your porter and guide will be carrying first aid kits. If you have anything personal that you need such as medication,it’s important that you bring that yourself. Our porters carry radio transmitters to communicate with local safety officials. Our guides are trained in CPR and life saving techniques. You national parks fee includes basic insurance.

You must arrive 1 day before. When you arrive by boat or airline, you must then get to Senaru. This takes too much time. The treks all leave early in the morning directly from the accomodations in Senaru.

There are designated spots along the trail. On the rim, your porters will set up a “toilet tent”.

We hike everyday. Weather on Mt. Rinjani is unpredictable and changes often. We do not make predictions on upcoming weather until the same day. We have our own network of information coming directly from the Gunung Rinjani National Park in regards to the weather.
