Enhance Your Trip

  • Tour Extensions

Today in Sintra, you have the choice of two activities. First you may choose to explore the quaint hilltop village independently, making your way along the winding streets lined with cork products, pastries, and local cafes. Your other option is to venture into the National Palace of Sintra, the country’s best-preserved palace from the Middle Ages, with the support of audioguides.

Start your trip to Portugal early with 3 nights in Porto, the jewel of Portugal set along the Douro River. The second-largest city in Portugal is home to incredible architecture and stunning cathedrals, a UNESCO-protected historic center from the middle ages, and of course – Port wine. Everywhere you turn in this visually stunning city will show you examples of baroque architecture, the romanticism movement and its monumental designs. Your stay in Porto will be perfectly balanced between guided excursions and free time, allowing you to get to know Porto on a deeper level.

  • Overnight Flight
  • Travel on your overnight flight to Porto, Portugal.
  • Porto, Portugal - Tour Begins
  • Arrive in Porto, a city that’s steeped in history and built with an artistic architectural eye. Here, you’ll find quiet cafes perfect for sipping a glass of Port wine and watching the world go by. You may choose to venture out and head toward the Douro River where so much of the history of this city started. You may even see a reproduction rabelo boat, traditionally used to transport Port wine from the wineries up river to the city of Porto.
  • Porto - Vila Nova de Gaia - Porto
  • Get to know this captivating city with a walking tour led by a local expert. Take in the grandeur of Praça da Liberdade Square, Sao Bento Train Station and its iconic azulejo tiles, and a visit to the Palácio da Bolsa, the Stock Exchange Palace, to see the legendary “Arab Room.” Meet a local chocolate maker at a family-run chocolatier store that has been in business for almost 100 years. Cross the Dom Luis I bridge into the neighboring city of Vila Nova de Gaia where we will visit a wine cellar for a tour and tasting. The afternoon is yours. Tonight, you’ll find out why Porto is regarded as a culinary hotspot during dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Today is yours to explore Porto how you’d like. Take advantage of this day at leisure – maybe heading into the Livraria Lello, considered to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world or visiting a local restaurant to try the famous local delicacy, the “francesinha” sandwich.
  • Porto - Lisbon - Cascais
  • Board a train* to Lisbon, where you’ll transfer to Cascais to join your tour and start the next leg of your travels.

Extend your stay in Portugal with 3 nights on the island paradise of Madeira and 1 night in Lisbon, Portugal’s vibrant capital city. Considered to be the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” Madeira combines nature - it's gushing streams, irrigation channels and botanical gardens - with culture such as wine tasting and watching embroiderers and wicker weavers at work. Enjoy a full day at leisure to soak up the island’s charms however you please. Spend time in traditional villages, venture along winding mountain roads, and splash in natural volcanic swimming pools. Your mini-tour ends with a night in Lisbon, whose captivating energy and mouth-watering culinary scene will capture your heart (and stomach!).

  • Lisbon - Funchal, Madeira
  • Fly to Madeira Island, the “pearl of the Atlantic” where you will arrive in the early afternoon. Madeira boasts a subtropical climate, majestic mountain ranges and volcanic caves. After some free time for lunch on your own in the colorful Santa Maria district, be led on a walking tour of Funchal’s old downtown with its quaint narrow streets and historical sites, such as the 15th century cathedral. Visit the Botanical Garden of Madeira with its collection of more than 2,500 plants from all continents.
  • The day is yours. During your free time, you may choose to visit the Sacred Art Museum and learn how the sugar-cane trade allowed for the purchase of Flemish art dating back to the 15th century. Or simply relax and enjoy the amenities that your hotel has to offer. Then gather in the evening for a traditional dinner known as an espetada. Folk dancers and lively music entertain you as you feast on a favorite local dish cooked over an open fire.
  • Funchal - Câmara de Lobos - Porto Moniz - Funchal
  • Begin your day with a tour that takes you to Câmara de Lobos, a traditional village on a picture-perfect bay that served as a special retreat for Sir Winston Churchill. It was here that Madeira’s natural beauty captivated him and inspired many of his paintings of the island. Drive along mountain roads, passing banana plantations and vineyards while en route to the world’s second-highest cliff, Cabo Girão. After, visit a sugar mill and learn about the importance of sugar cane production in the early 15th century. Sample some local specialties made at the mill before leaving for the fishing village of Porto Moniz. Here, enjoy free time for a swim* (weather permitting) in the natural volcanic rock pools before returning to Funchal.
  • Funchal - Lisbon
  • Board your flight and return to the metropolitan energy of Lisbon. Enjoy your afternoon as you please.
  • Lisbon - Tour Ends
  • Depart for home with Portugal in your heart as your tour ends today.

Hotel-Turim Marques

Fado: the perfect blend of voice and guitar. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Patrimony, as a celebrated form of world music that captures what it is to be Portuguese. The word Fado comes from the Latin word fatum, which means fate or destiny. It is a style of music that is all about deep feelings: the disappointments of love, the ups and downs of life. No one knows quite how Fado first came into being, but to this day, Portugal's traditional music remains at the very heart of the country's culture. In one of Lisbon’s most popular Fado restaurants, professional performers entertain you while you enjoy a typical Portuguese three-course dinner with wine included.

Set sail on the clear blue waters of the Bay of Lagos to experience the stunning Ponta da Piedade with some of the most beautiful and famous coastal scenery in Portugal, including pristine beaches and rocky cliffs that are simply breathtaking. Upon arrival at Ponta da Piedade transfer to smaller boats... then, it’s off to explore the magical grottoes! Take in the striking rock formations sculpted by the sea for thousands of years as you weave in and out of tiny inlets, serene grottoes and impressive caves.

Tour Lisbon, Portugal's capital overlooking the Tagus River.

Spend the night in Evora, known as the "Museum City of Portugal."

A very beautiful place with wonderful landscapes, thermal baths, cheese and wine. Our guide Sasha was lovely and very informative as well as delightful to talk too. I enjoyed all the activities but do ensure you were good shoes for the home. recommend that a visit to the cheese factory is added the morning you arrive on Sao Jorge.

Walking in Madeira

We had a very good local guide, Benny, very passionate. Beautiful walkings, very easy to do. Good hotels. After seen the little distances in the island, we suggest not to change hotel every day for this tour. Good choice of local restaurants except Restaurant Salgueiro in Porto Moniz, in which we had an awful experience, waiters were very rude, please avoid bringing other guest there.

One of the best Solo travel ( then joining a group?) I ever did.Been traveling since I was 27, am 56 now.. every birthday month of mine I treat myself on seeing beautiful countries I’ve never been. Am glad I found this site and this tour. The tour itinerary was great, the tour guide is great we all love her ( Myriam ), and our driver ( Hrui). I love small group guided tour. In this tour I met incredible people that become my new friends. We consider each other our Portugal family?..

Porto to Lisbon Atlantic Ride Tour

Porto to Lisbon Atlantic Ride

I would recommend this tour to anyone. While the biking was a challenge at times (more hills, more technical riding than I had anticipated), the scenery was amazing and the group dynamic could not have been better. People and the guide supported you no matter what--if you climbed up a hill, walked your bike or rode in the van, you had the freedom and support to do what was best for you. It was very well organized during the rides, and we had some freedom to either be with the whole group, with a smaller group or by ourselves in the evenings and that flexible approach to downtime was appreciated. Our guides Marco and Joan were the best; they clearly love their jobs and their country and were eager to share its history and culture with us. Their warmth and sense of humor are things I will remember fondly from the trip. People on the tour were a mix of friends traveling together, couples, and people who came alone. Toughest part of the trip was saying good-bye to them but I look forward to exploring other parts of the world with this tour group.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Portugal

We had a great group. Itinerary was just what I was looking for. Everyone could choose what they wanted to do during the day.
Above and beyond my expectations attributed to the tour guide Ana Rita and the bus driver Mario..
Full immersion into the culture and sights of Portugal! Great hotels with superb in town locations. Great restaurants and/or food recommendations. Driver and guide were highly accomplished and informative in a fun, story format. Guide did a great job of mixing us together and ease into making new friends. Good mix of lots of group activities and individual time.

What are escorted tours, and what are their benefits?

Thinking of taking an escorted tour holiday but not sure what to expect? We shed some light on this incredibly popular holiday type.

By Saga team

Published 5 May 2024

Couple of tourists taking picture of Trogir town from castle walls

An escorted tour allows you to sample the best of a country or region without fretting over hotel bookings or missing travel connections.

They work particularly well for large countries, such as Australia , enabling you to visit such far-apart destinations as Sydney, Alice Springs, the Great Barrier Reef and Perth – often within a matter of a fortnight.

They also throw in experiences such as whale-watching or wine-tasting, often a logistical nightmare for holidaymakers to organise as they could spend hours ploughing through booking websites trying to find the right deal or tour.

Some tours can also include a cruising element, such as drifting down the river Nile or sailing the Norwegian fjords. Cruise & Tours are an excellent way to view changing scenery and landscapes.

Saga also offer escorted Cruise & Stay options, which combine stays on water and land, giving you more time to explore a city in or relax on a beach.

One of the best ways to view dramatic scenery is from the comfort of a luxury train carriage on a rail holiday .

Saga has escorted rail journeys through the Rocky Mountains, the jungles of India , the glorious Swiss Alps and from Botswana to Zimbabwe .

Perhaps the biggest allure of the escorted tour is that somebody else has organised everything for you. There’s no staying up into the small hours navigating complicated foreign train websites, no kicking the computer with frustration at flight baggage fees and no arguments over where to eat. Instead, escorted tours allow you to relax and enjoy the experience.

Given that usual holiday-planning involves precious hours wasted poring over foreign train timetables or hotel comparison websites, this will come as little surprise to many travellers.

On escorted tours, a benevolent guardian angel (otherwise known as the tour organisers) has already done this for you.

In addition to less planning, nearly all accommodation, transfers and excursion prices will be incorporated in the main price of the escorted tour, allowing you to budget more effectively.

Transfers, tour guides and some meals, along with sightseeing and entrance fees to attractions are usually included too.

Holidaymakers often run into problems – everything from lost luggage to over-flowing hotel room toilets.

In the likelihood of such catastrophes, tour customers can relax safe in the knowledge that to know there’ll be somebody on hand to help them.

Most large operators, including Saga, have their tours protected by ABTA [Association of British Travel Agents] and the government-backed ATOL scheme, which will protect you should your airline go bust.

Want to see South America during one two-week swoop? Well, many escorted tours will enable you to see Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Iguassu Falls, Machu Picchu and Chile all within one fortnight.

Attempting to do this yourself would be a costly logistical nightmare.

Not necessarily. Saga offers tours at different ‘paces’, with tours ranging from ‘Pace 1’ (travelling for three-four hours a day with a few days for you to relax) to ‘Pace 3’ (action-packed adventures with some long but essential journeys so customers can experience the best of a region).

Maybe this was the case for escorted tours in the 1970s. Today, the variety of transport used on escorted tours is staggering – cruises aboard Turkish gulets, luxury train rides through American national parks, even horse-riding trips through Uzbekistan.

Escorted tours mostly have transport, entry fees for major sights and sometimes meals included. Operators often manage to negotiate special rates for these, meaning escorted tours are often cheaper than booking independently. You’re also not at the mercy of dramatically surging prices for flights or hotels.

Most activities on escorted tours are optional, meaning you shouldn’t feel forced into doing things you’re not interested in. If your tour guide does attempt to tack on a souvenir shop stop, you could always shop elsewhere or inform the guide you’d like more time to explore.

If there is a choice of restaurants nearby, you should be free to sample local cuisine independently – at your own expense, obviously.

Find out about Saga's full range of escorted tours and start planning your next adventure.

Lack of any offers on what is an expensive tour holiday.

Having just missed the 10% April offer, (we spent several days trying decide on tour location and tour operator), rather disappointed that no offers or discount could be made. I'm sure if we'd booked via a Local travel agent, we would have secured something, if only the necessary overnight airport hotel.

Not impressive

Not impressive. Long wait for getting to an actual person on the telephone was not good. 30 mins having to repeat myself etc. initial paperwork incorrect. Having to change room selection because the whole thing took so long to do - the rooms apparently "went" after being shown as available. so now have to sleep in same room (2 females) in twin bedded instead of 2 single rooms!

First time using Saga for a holiday.

First time using Saga for a holiday. As an older traveller having not travelled for some years I feel a bit rusty. I feel confident that you will take care of me & guide me through the holiday especially if something goes wrong.

Just returned from a fantastic holiday…

Just returned from a fantastic holiday with SAGA. Our drivers to and from the airport were excellent, prompt collecting us and making the long journey go smoothly. Flights with Croatian airlines were on time if not ahead of schedule and transfers to and from were great. Our ship the vessel Amorena was much better than expected. The cabin was clean and roomy enough. The food on board was of the highest quality, the staff were cheerful and did everything possible to look after us. The tour guide - Bobby was great - top bloke , looked after us all, extremely knowledgeable and with a good sense of humour. Croatia, an amazing country, friendly people, tremendous scenery clean, no litter anywhere. Loved it, would definitely go back.

SAGA has improved its customer phone service. Still needs to improve the food available at the hotels.

SAGA has improved its customer phone service substantially. For two years on the dozens of occasions I phoned, I used to have to wait 30 minutes to over an hour to be able to talk to someone on the phone regarding booking a holiday or having queries about an existing booking. Most of the time I just gave up waiting. Now it's much faster and more efficient and staff are far more helpful. The Titan guide we had on the latest escorted tour I went on, (Jordan including stays at Amman, Petra and the Dead Sea), was excellent. He was extremely well informed and entertaining and eager to help. He had 30 years of experience being a professional tour guide. The major criticism I have of SAGA/Titan holidays is that, the food is nearly always of a very average standard and not very appealing. I've often missed out on the buffet and gone off to a local restaurant. Everything else is usually very good and the tour manager/guides do an extremely good job.

Telephone booking process easy

Telephone booking process easy, holiday unavailable to be booked online, "selling fast". This meant I couldn't see flight times on website prior to making call. Used ringback service, call returned within about 15 minutes.

Just back from Costa Rica

Just back from Costa Rica and had a fantastic time. There were lots of opportunities for connections to be missed and transport to be late but every single vehicle turned up on time. Hotels varied but all were good. Thanks to Sharon Carr for making the whole holiday come together.

Booking Issue quickly and professionally resolved.

Although there was a fundamental issue with our booking, the ladies at Saga took possession of the problem. A big thank you to Alex, Sandra, Nicole and Shaneille who, having helped resolve the issue, confirmed that Saga's Customer Service still remains as caring and professional as ever.

Poor Customer Service

I attempted to book a holiday to Japan on 2nd April, obviously as it was only 6 week away; various items had to be checked. Saga NEVER got in touch regarding the status of the booking, I rang on 4 separate occasions to check if the holiday was going ahead and this carried on for 3 weeks, before I was finally advised on the 25th May that I would not be going; but they knew on the 18th but didn't have the common curtesy to let me know.

Easily booked and friendly helpful staff to deal with any questions we had. Looking forward to our holiday

The booking process was very poor

The booking process was very poor, with calls repeatedly cut off, SAGA operatives having to be chased for responses, and last minute flight price increases. It took the eventual intervention of a manager to investigate and resolve matters relating to our booking, which we have now completed.

Small Sailing Boat Spring cruise in Croatia

We have just returned from a Saga trip on MV Amorena, out of Trogir, Croatia. The thing which really made the holiday great was the Tour Manager Bobby, and the whole crew, with Ivor, quite literally, at the helm. Bobby went out of his way to ensure everything ran smoothly and was so professional, but friendly too. Shout out too, to Urso, the ever smiling barman extraordinaire. The food on the boat exceeded expectations - how they managed to produce such fare from such a small galley, we have no idea. The itinerary was good - with the highlight being Krka Waterfalls. A couple of minor things on arrival, such as only three coat hangers and no plug, were resolved swiftly, without fuss (who would have believed that one week into the season, the last cabin occupants would have decided to take 9 brand new wooden coat hangers and a plug home 😳😳😳) Only slight blot was nothing to do with Croatia, Bobby or the crew, just the transfers to and from the airport. The first driver was amazing, but we had to ‘share’ a transfer. Meaning our trip took three hours, rather than two each way. Unfortunately, we had quite a wait the return car home, as the driver wasn’t there (all other drivers for the same flight were). The rep at the airport was helpful but wasn’t getting accurate info about the car arrival time. But, these slight blips don’t take away from a super trip, with a great Tour Manager, crew and boat in Croatia. Thanks Bobby, Captain Ivor and the Crew 😀😀😀

There is no information on how to check in

There is no information on how to check in in the final travel documents. In FAQS on line it says to check in on line with Turkish Airlines but on the phone I was told I cannot do this and must check in when I get to the airport. I had the same problem last year when flying to Johannesburg. I was told on the phone that the group would be checked in at the airport and in fact I checked in myself at the airport with the help of a Saga rep. But others in the taxi had already checked in on line so this worried me as we were later than three hours before the flight when getting to the airport. So Saga, please put HOW TO CHECK IN on the travel documents so we know what to do.

Date of experience : 22 April 2024

Hi Mary, We're really sorry to read your review. This is clearly not the kind of feedback we hope to receive. The check in process depends on the airline you are travelling with and the type of booking you have. If you could please send your booking reference details through to [email protected], our team will contact your directly to answer your queries and address your concerns. We do hope that despite these issues, you have a great holiday, Best Wishes, Nick Saga Travel

Saga Holidays for first time

On my first time using Saga Holidays I was unsure how it would go. I shouldn’t have been worried. The Staff Member , Allyson , was totally professional & knowledgeable. She took me through the entire process with empathy & answered every question I had. I would certainly say she could not have been more helpful.

Date of experience : 28 April 2024

Hi Tony, Thanks for sharing your review. We're delighted to hear that Allyson was able to answer all your queries and help you confirm your booking. We hope you have a wonderful holiday, Best Wishes, Nick Saga Travel

The staff did everything they could to enable me to enjoy my stay

I have just returned from a most enjoyable holiday in Bermuda. The people were welcoming and friendly and went out of their way to make my stay enjoyable. The hotel complex was beautifully situated with superb sea views and delightful cottages However it is very hilly and some of the slopes have very steep inclines and there are steps with no hand rails to negotiate in order to access the various cottages and public buildings. I have mobility problems which the hotel was aware of before I arrived. They allocated me a room with only one step needed to access. However even one step prevented me taking my mobility scooter into my room but with in hours of my arrival maintenance had made and fitted a ramp. The Bell Boys were incredibly helpful not only transporting me around the site in the hotel golf buggies but lifting my scooter up, down and over steps. They really did go the extra mile to enable my stay to be as good as they could make it.

Hi Jane, Thanks so much for sharing your review. We're really pleased to hear that the team at the hotel looked after you so well and that you had such a good stay. We look forward to you joining us again, Best Wishes, Nick Saga Travel

I decided that I wanted to do a Trans-Canadian rail trip and when I googled Saga came up as one of the operators. This was a name I trusted and, in order to get exactly what I wanted, I called one of the advisors. Melanie was very well informed, taking me through the various options, and within around 30 minutes everything was sorted.

Hi Haydn, Thanks for taking the time to share your review. We're delighted to hear that you have chosen Saga for your upcoming trip and that Melanie was able to answer all your queries, We hope you have a wonderful time, Best Wishes, Nick Saga Travel

Magic of the Nile Cruise…top drawer

We have recently been on the "Magic of the Nile" cruise. To be honest, it could not have been any better. The Saga rep, Samer and the Egyptologist, Ahmed were first class. Samer, I nicknamed him our sheepdog, rounding us up if we strayed or lagged behind during the excursions. He looked after our group brilliantly, nothing was too much trouble, a credit to Saga. Ahmed the Egyptologist, he obviously knew his subject well, but he kept descriptions and explanations simple. He was extremely animated when describing things, involving individuals to aid his work and held our interest in doing so. He was always ready to answer questions when needed. The cruise boat, Amwaj. We were very happy with the buffet cuisine, there was always something available to suit our taste. The cabin was spacious and fully equipped for our needs and well maintained by the valet staff. In fact all the crew of the boat were top rate and attentive. I cant really say much more and as it was the first time we had travelled with Sag/Titan, we will certainly consider using them again.

Date of experience : 15 April 2024

Hi Steve, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide such a great review of your recent trip to Egypt. We're delighted to hear that you had such a memorable time and that Samer and Ahmed looked after you all so well. We look forward to you joining us on another Saga adventure, Best Wishes, Nick Saga Travel
