2013 British & Irish Lions Squad Announced

  • Updated: 30th April 2013

British & Irish Lions Head Coach Warren Gatland has announced his squad for the 2013 Lions Tour to Australia this summer with Sam Warburton as captain.

There’s no place for Jonny Wilkinson, Ryan Jones, England captain Chris Robshaw or Ireland captain Rory Best, but there are places for ex-international prop Matt Stevens and rookie winger Sean Maitland.

Warburton becomes the 28th captain of the British & Irish Lions, but only the 4th Welsh captain of the Lions. Gatland said “In the last 12 months the composition of the touring party and the appointment of the captain has created much speculation and debate, and today it is great that we at last announce our captain and players to represent the very best of British & Irish rugby. Being selected as a Lion is a huge honour for a player and marks a major highlight in his career.

“I would particularly like to congratulate Sam who becomes one of the youngest ever Lions captains. We have an existing working relationship through the Wales team and Sam is an impressive individual and natural leader and I look forward to working with him in the coming weeks and on the Tour.”

On becoming Lions captain Warburton said “Being selected as a British & Irish Lions tourist is itself a huge honour and something that I, like all players, have dreamed about. To be asked to lead the Tour as captain to Australia is unbelievable and I am very, very honored to be asked.

“It is a proud honour for me, Cardiff Blues and Wales, and to follow in the steps of former Welsh Lions’ captains such as John Dawes and Phil Bennett is amazing. As the latest custodian I will endeavor to do the very best job I can.

“The Tour to Hong Kong and Australia will be a huge challenge against one of the top three teams in the world. However, I am confident that we have the ambition, talent and attitude to mount a serious challenge against the Wallabies on their home soil and return victorious.” The squad reads as follows:

Tommy Bowe Dan Cole Tom Croft Alex Cuthbert Jonathan Davies Ian Evans Toby Faletau Owen Farrell Ritchie Gray Leigh Halfpenny Dylan Hartley Cian Healy Jamie Heaslip Richard Hibbard Stuart Hogg Gethin Jenkins Adam Jones Alun Wyn Jones Rob Kearney Dan Lydiate Sean Maitland Conor Murray George North Sean O’Brien Paul O’Connell Brian O’Driscoll Geoff Parling Mike Phillips Jamie Roberts Jonny Sexton Matt Stevens Justin Tipuric Manu Tuilagi Mako Vunipola Sam Warburton (c) Ben Youngs Tom Youngs

Moscow Zoo as well as a small group of people

I only need accommodations for part of my trip

Visit Moscow Zoo

Moscow Zoo has more than 5,000 animals, so it really has something for everyone. Whether you are a fan of butterflies, bears, leopards or llamas, get close to these magnificent animals and learn more about them.

The brainchild of Professor A.P. Bogadanov, the zoo was established in 1864. At its height of popularity, 200,000 people came here annually to see its animals, which included lions and tigers. At the beginning of the 20th century, it fell into disrepair. Battles took place here during the 1905 Russian Revolution. Following a period of decline under Soviet rule, the zoo underwent a series of renovations in 1991, 1997 and 2014. Now visit this pleasant place to view more than 750 different species.

Look for the zoo’s distinctive entrance, which was built to commemorate Moscow’s 850th anniversary in 1997. As you enter the zoo, note the rustic stonework and quaint towers, which give it the appearance of a mythical castle made of rock. Come through its doors to see the myriad animals inside. Big attractions close to the entrance include subterranean viewing platforms that allow you to watch penguins and sea lions frolicking in the water.

See the incredible endangered Far Eastern leopards. Just dozens of these natural inhabitants of Russia, China and Korea remain in the wild. Other big cats held here include the rare white tiger and the Siberian tiger, another native Russian animal. Both polar bears and brown bears live inside the zoo too. Watch these creatures from a safe vantage point.

The zoo’s special facilities and activities will interest younger visitors. Come to the petting zoo and see baby chicks crack open their shells. Learn more about Russian fairy tales here, many of which feature chicken, cats and goats in leading roles.

The Moscow Zoo has an entrance fee. Reach the area via the metro to Barrikadnaya station. The zoo is open every day except Mondays.

  • Moscow, the city for life – Russia

Moscow Urban Forum in Moscow

Recently the Moscow Government published under the headline “Moscow, the city for life” its seven development priorities. A document distributed at the Moscow Urban Forum in December 2013.

Moscow is with a population of over 12 million people one of the biggest metropolis in the world. The real number of citizens is difficult to establish as Moscow is the destination of many migrants, legal and otherwise, drawn by higher salaries and better services and living conditions. In 2010 alone, 126,000 newcomers were officially registered in the city, but the actual number is certainly much higher. The Moscow International Internet Portal indicates that “By some estimates together with commuters working and studying in Moscow, migrants, transit visitors and tourists the daily actual population of Moscow amounts in general to 15 – 20 million people”. It is forecast that by 2035 the population of the Moscow region will increase by 4,000,000 people and amount to 22,800,000 people.  It is expected that by 2020 passenger traffic generated by the ‘New Moscow’ will double whereas the capacity of the existing infrastructure is already exhausted.

After adopting in 2011 different government programs for the key directions of the capital’s development, the Moscow Government worked out in 2013 its main objectives for the creation of comfortable living conditions with the definition of seven development priorities: 1) Mobile City; 2) Comfortable urban environment; 3) Healthy city; 4) Well-educated city; 5) Socially protected city; 6) New economics of Moscow; 7) Open Moscow.

It is a large and ambitious programme highlighting the goals reached and progress made in the last years, and illustrating the objectives for the next years in numbers and graphics.

An important part takes the improvement and development of the transport infrastructure. Moscow is literally suffocated by the significant growth of the personal car fleet, doubling from 2.6 millions cars in 2000 to 4.5 million in 2012 and the increase of commuting du amongst others to the ongoing separation of business centres and residential areas. Over two-thirds of the municipal investments have been assigned in future for the improvement and modernisation of the transport infrastructure, roads and public transport, an estimated 329 billion roubles for 2013.

Moscow Subway Plan 2013-2020

Moscow Subway Plan 2013-2020 © Moscow Subway

Today over 60% of the total volume of Moscow passenger transportation is carried by the subway and this traffic capacity should increase by 1.2 billions persons annually. Just to illustrate the ambitions, the program foresees to rise the average annual construction of subway stations from 2.75 stations, from 2009 – 2012, up to 9.1 stations per year for the period 2013-2020, with the final objective to construct 73 new stations by 2020. They say themselves, that it is the most rapid construction program in the entire history of the Moscow subway. In comparison the metro line of the Paris metropolis, Le Grand Paris Express, foresees to build 205 km of metro lines and 72 new stations between 2013 and 2030. It seems that Moscow want to do in less than half the time.

The development priorities draw the picture of a metropolis with a population using in the last years more intensely the public spaces, the cultural institutions, the shopping area and demanding for a higher urban living standard. A population that has better access to medical facilities and a growing life expectancy, 75.8 years in 2012, and a growing natality rate. A population with opportunities for a better education starting from more kindergartens over preschools to high schools. Interesting is the development of the average salary of a school teacher in Moscow, from 39200 roubles in 2010 up to 64100 roubles in 2013: an average annual growth of 12% in a context of an inflation of approximately 6 %, leaving a real salary growth of 6 % per year. Not bad, seen from a Western European perspective.

But Moscow also wants to be a city that cares about its less fortunate citizens. The program is about social protection of older generations, assistance to needy families and persons with limited capabilities. It is about free access to public services, like transport, medical treatment, recreation, financial support and accessibility of public buildings. It also concerns providing housing for certain categories of citizens, probably one of the most difficult task, as Moscow has been ranked regularly among the five most expensive cities in the world in terms of the cost of housing.

To finance this new and improved public facilities and services, the Moscow Government counts on the dynamic of investments, supposed to grow from 732 billion roubles in 2010 up to 1719 in 2016. A mixture of better services for the investors, improved infrastructures and tax incentives should keep the dynamic going.

The Open Moscow development priority aims to create and strengthen the links between to residents and the public services. Improvements in the information and communication with the citizens, in the collecting and carrying out of suggestions of the citizens, and monitoring the activities of the public officers of municipal services, probably to fight corruption and try to establish a kind of confidence. Different internet sites like the Our City Website , regrouped in one Open Data Portal , should play in mayor part in this new Open Moscow development.

This program looks like a step in the right direction. It is developing Moscow towards a multi-layer, multi-functional city, trying to diversify the transport system, the municipal offer in public spaces, recreation and medial facilities, and supporting the poorer populations. The success of the renewal and transformation of the Gorky Park is a sign of these multi-functional and high-quality public spaces and the demand of the citizens for such spaces.

What is still missing for me is a clearer image of what Moscow wants to be in its whole, and in its parts. For the moment the document is set up as a catalogue of good intended programs, but not yet as an integral city development program. An example is the important investments in the public transport and in the road system, with the hope to encourage the citizens to abandon their excessive use of personal transport. But as long as the Moscow develops its road and parking system, citizens might prefer their car to public transport. Further detailed choices have to be taken on the different aspects of these programs and their feasibility in the near future.

Annotation: For this article I analysed the English version of the publication “Moscow, the city for life – Moscow development priorities” from the Moscow Government. During the lecture I got the impression that some mistakes had been made in the English translation. Download for the Russian version of the document (pdf) : Moscow City for life ru

Alex Corbisiero scores the British & Irish Lions' opening try against Australia in the third Test

Lions maul Australia as Leigh Halfpenny and George North seal series

The absence of Brian O'Driscoll was irrelevant on a night when Warren Gatland himself could have stood at outside-centre, limp and all, and the outcome would have been no different. The British & Irish Lions destroyed the Wallabies at forward, mulching their scrum and overpowering them at the breakdown in what was a consummate team performance that emphatically delivered a first series victory in 16 years.

From the moment that Will Genia, the player who kept Australia in the first Test and turned the second, dropped Jonathan Sexton's kick-off in an act of gaucheness out of character with one of the game's quickest thinkers, the Lions were on the front foot. They won a free-kick at the subsequent scrum, ran it, and three phases later Alex Corbisiero, the England prop, evaded Benn Robinson's tackle to score near the posts At that point, the momentum in the series shifted firmly in favour of the tourists.

The first scrum is always a litmus test when Romain Poite referees. He invariably awards a free-kick or a penalty and the pack that finds itself on the wrong side of the former policeman's law tends to find itself cast in the role of sinner for the rest of the game. And so it was with the Wallabies, who went on to concede another free-kick and five penalties at the set piece, a tally that cost 19 points and the services of Ben Alexander for 10 minutes for collapsing. The man who the previous week had tormented Mako Vunipola was not to return.

Corbisiero missed the second Test because of a strained calf and he played like a snorting bull in this one, carrying, tackling, helping win turnovers and making Alexander look anything but great. He was not in the original squad, having been injured for most of last season, and how Australia wished it had stayed that way. If the Lions had been passive in Melbourne, setting out not to lose having gone one-up in the series, they came to conquer and so intense was their forward effort that Gatland for the first time emptied his bench.

He had asked every player to push themselves to the outer limit of their physical endurance and they did. They were physical but they were also resourceful. They wore down the Wallabies for the first half and moved in for the kill on 55 minutes.

Leigh Halfpenny, who finished the night with a Lions-record 21 points to give him 49 for the series, eclipsing the 41 set by his mentor Neil Jenkins in 1997, had made his reputation this tour with his nerveless kicking, notwithstanding his late miss from long range in Melbourne, but as an attacking voice he had been mute – until the final reckoning. Australia had fought back from 19-3 down to 19-16 when, 12 minutes into the second-half, Kurtley Beale dinked a chip over the Lions' defence and picked up. He was in the Lions' 22 when Halfpenny, isolated in defence, tackled him to the ground and prevented the off-load. The move ended when Toby Faletau, who with Sean O'Brien kept smashing into the Wallabies' fringe defence and making the gainline his own, forced the turnover. Sexton's kick ahead was then caught by George North, who found O'Driscoll's replacement, Jonathan Davies, who was savvy from the start.

Davies was tackled into touch, but the Lions soon had the ball and when they switched play from right to left, Halfpenny sprinted through a gap and slipped a short pass to Sexton. The Lions had been billed as Wales in the buildup because the Six Nations champions had 10 starters, but the first two tries were scored by an Englishman and an Irishman, and by the end all four home unions were represented on the field.

With Sexton at his teasing best, it was Wales with knobs on, power and panache. The Lions had been criticised for being predictable and unadventurous, but their third try was a gem, Halfpenny swerving out of Genia's tackle and beating Joe Tomane for pace before freeing North. When Jamie Roberts found space to score his side's fourth try on 68 minutes, the prospect of a half-century of points saw many of the yellow-hatted figures in the stand flee for the exits, but the Lions had sated themselves and started counting down to the celebrations.

It was a remarkable finale to an oscillatory series. It was no coincidence that it was only with a European referee in charge that the relative ordinariness of Australia's forwards was exposed. George Smith's comeback showed, in a very different way to the case of his fellow survivor from the 2001 series, O'Driscoll, that sentiment plays no part in professional sport. He survived a fearsome clash of heads with Richard Hibbard in the fifth-minute, which involved a trip to the concussion bin, but, with his side on the back foot, he was unable to influence the game.

With Israel Folau straining a hamstring 25 minutes in, Australia lost their main strike runner. His replacement, Jesse Mogg, made one dazzling run that ended when he knocked on after being tackled by Geoff Parling, but the Wallabies struggled to put any phases of play together. They were not just outgunned but outclassed, never recovering from Genia's early blemish.

Of 15 scrums set in the first-half, five resulted in a free-kick or a penalty for the Lions and the set piece allowed them to dictate the game. Corbisiero's try was followed by a Halfpenny penalty after Dan Lydiate had forced Tamone to hold on. In the first Test the penalty would probably have gone the other way. Christian Leali'ifano responded with a 25-yard penalty, but three scrums yielded nine points for Halfpenny in 13 minutes, the last after Alexander had seen yellow: when his time was up, he was replaced by Sekope Kepu.

Time was up in the first half when Australia won a five-metre scrum and James O'Connor broke the tackles of Sexton and Mike Phillips to score a try that reduced the Lions' lead to nine points. When Leali'ifano kicked two penalties at the start of the second-half, the Wallabies had scored 13 unanswered points in six minutes and the series was in the balance.

Another scrum penalty gave the Lions a six-point lead, the margin they had been unable to defend in Melbourne. This, though, was a team with a different attitude, one that had forced Australia to run four kickable penalties in the first-half because they knew it was a night when three-pointers would not be enough. Up stepped man of the series Halfpenny, who will return to Wales to find that his value has soared. He has a year to run on his contract with Cardiff Blues and at the end of it Toulon will be looking for a goal-kicker.

DETROIT (AP) — The NFL draft has taken the show on the road for a decade, giving cities around the country a chance to be in the spotlight.

Detroit is on the clock.

The Motor City, which was once one of the nation’s largest and most powerful cities, has bounced back from filing for bankruptcy in 2013.

Fans driving and flying into town from the league’s other 31 teams will see signs of progress from the symbolic to the significant.

AP AUDIO: NFL draft has been on tour for a decade and the next stop is Detroit, giving it a shot in spotlight.

AP correspondent Mike Hempen reports.

DETROIT is spelled out, each letter standing 10 feet off an embankment alongside a freeway between the airport and downtown, in an art installation that made its debut earlier this month.

A few miles away, the long-abandoned Michigan Central Station has undergone a renovation funded by Ford Motor Co. to transform the 18-story, 113-year-old train depot from an eyesore into a gem.

In the heart of downtown, where the NFL draft will begin Thursday night, a 685-foot-high tower represents the largest construction project in the city in more than a half-century as it rises from the site of the former Hudson’s department store.

With more than 50 million viewers and an expected 400,000 visitors over the three-day event, there will be a chance to change the conversation about the city.

Lions President Rod Wood pitched the city as a draft destination in 2016 and teamed up with the Detroit Sports Commission a year later to submit the formal bid to land the NFL’s annual event that gives fans from each team a jolt of hope.

The Lions and the local sports commission also partnered with Visit Detroit, Dan Gilbert’s real-estate company, Bedrock, and the Detroit Police Department to make the most of the opportunity.

“The draft here in Detroit is going to make a big step for us in making that old image go away and people having the new image of the city,” Gilbert told The Associated Press. “We’re going to be able to showcase Detroit like never before.”

That’s part of the NFL’s plan, and it has led to 20-plus cities vying for a future draft. Green Bay will host next year’s draft.

After the league had its last draft in New York a decade ago, it envisioned giving cities — particularly those in colder climates that may not host a future Super Bowl — a chance to have a signature event that would have a lot of benefits, including an economic impact.

Chicago was the first tour stop in 2015 and it generated $81 million for the community. Kansas City had it last year, sparking $164 million in economic impact.

“Another opportunity for our franchise and our city and just for the world to kind of migrate to downtown Detroit,” said Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who has turned around a franchise that is coming off its best season since winning the 1957 NFL title. “I expect it to be pretty packed. I’m excited for all the businesses.”

Detroit’s draft is expected to bring in at least $160 million, giving small businesses a boost from fans flocking in and around Campus Martius Park.

One longtime business is looking forward to more than just an increase in foot traffic.

Lauren Stovall, the business lead at Hot Sam’s, and two others representing the 103-year-old men’s clothing store and tailor shop will be onstage during the draft’s final day Saturday.

“There’s a perception of Detroit that comes from people who actually have not been here,” Stovall said. “What’s so great is when people actually come to Detroit, they are blown away, because Detroit is not what they might have thought.”

There are new hotels, high-end and trendy restaurants and bars along with a skyscraper nearing completion. Challenges continue to exist in some neighborhoods as the city continues to demolish abandoned houses, including more than 25,000 over the past 10 years. Crime has been trending down and homicides are the lowest since 1966.

“We’re not going to lose our balance patting ourselves on the back,” Detroit Police Chief James White said.

Hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes officers from Detroit, county, state and federal agencies will patrol the greater downtown area. White said all the city’s police officers will work shifts during the draft, some downtown, others in neighborhoods.

Bomb-sniffing dogs and other K-9 teams will be flown into Detroit by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which also has pledged to have its tactical team on standby. Intelligence agents are monitoring social media for any threats.

Mayor Mike Duggan devoted some time during his annual State of the City address Wednesday to talk about the importance of the draft turning a lot of eyes on Detroit. Visitors for the draft are “going to see a very different city,” the mayor promised.

“We have a chance to reintroduce Detroit to America,” Duggan said.

Associated Press writers Corey Williams and Mike Householder contributed to this report.
