See Why We're the Best Hawaii Tour Operator

Makani is very friendly and made booking the trip so easy. Tiho was our guide and made the trip fun and exciting. He had great stories to tell along the way. He even made some extra stops for us. Would definitely recommend this company over one of the bigger bus tours.

Ankala Tony (Uncle.Tony) is a man with a big heart and many talents that my wife and I felt privileged to behold. We soon discovered that we were in the company of a professional caliber comedian who combined side splitting humor with poignant informative narratives about his beautiful island home. One highlight involved Tony sharing his blissful vocal gift and ukelele skills.

King Mike, you LEGEND!!!!!! My wife, 12 year old son and I were lucky enough to be taken on a tour today with King Mike as our guide, what an experience. What ever he is getting paid, double it. The knowledge he shared with us about the history of Hawaii was outstanding.

We highly recommend Go Tours Hawaii. We were looking to book a tour to the north shore for 12 people and our own van with a tour driver; other companies were more expensive and one company we booked didn’t turn up, so nearly gave up until we bumped into Rodney who was so friendly, helpful, professional and gave us a really good deal.

Ray was the tour guide this day and he was awesome! He did a great job of pointing out a lot of different things as well as introducing us to local Hawaiian culture. Most of the time you drive around the North Shore in the bus - thankfully the air condition was not to cool. At each tour highlight you have a short stop (15 to 40 min.) to take pictures or explore the location.

Reviews of On The Go Tours Tours

The King Rameses Tour was excellent. The itinerary was well thought out, we had a great group of fellow travellers and most important, our guide Dino was superb - really knowledgeable about every aspect of Egypt's ancient history and the sites we were seeing, an excellent communicator and the perfect host. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to get the most out of a couple of weeks in Egypt.
It was a mind blowing and yet spiritual trip…I loved it!
I really enjoyed this tour. We were a small group so it was easy to get to know people. The tour is very full on with a varied itinerary. The guides were friendly & helpful. The hotels were of a good standard & location, except the hotel in Siem Reap which was too far out from the centre.

How to Choose the Right Tour Group

Group size, participants’ age range, style of travel and budget are among the factors you should consider when selecting an itinerary.

An illustration shows a stylized globe with buildings ranging from an old church to the Chrysler Building skyscraper. In the center of the globe, tourists in sunglasses and hats and T-shirts roam around the building. One group in particular is enlarged, with the central figure holding up a selfie stick with a cellphone, taking a photo of his group.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

Tour companies that offer multiday trips arrange most everything for you: lodging, sightseeing, food and transportation. But group size, style of travel and budget are among the considerations travelers should assess before picking a tour. Read on for tips.

Big group or small

Start your research by thinking about how many people you want to travel with and what your tolerance is for the social demands dictated by group size.

Smaller groups can move more nimbly and possibly see more. But they can also be more intensely social as you spend a great deal of time with the same people touring and dining.

Larger groups tend to require more time to get around, but they can also offer more social variety — for example, you can change up your lunch partners more easily.

“Large groups offer anonymity, allowing travelers to choose their level of interaction,” said Deborah Miller, a travel adviser and the owner of Edge of Wonder Travels Unlimited in San Francisco. “Conversely, smaller groups foster intimacy among travelers, guides and the destination itself.”

Look for age-appropriate trips

Think about the demographics of your travel party and consider matching that to a tour company.

Operators often segment their trips by age under the assumption that similarly aged people have more in common or prefer the same pace. Road Scholar , for example, caters to an intellectually curious 50-plus crowd.

On the other end of the spectrum, G Adventures offers a category of trips for “18-to-thirtysomethings” and Intrepid Travel has trips for 18-to-35-year-olds.

With their inherent age spans, families can be a tough demographic to fit into larger group departures, which is why companies tend to break up family offerings by age group.

The active tour company Backroads has three age segments for families, including trips for those with children 4 to 19, those with older teens and younger adults into their 20s, and those with children in their 20s and beyond.

“By definition, that creates somewhat of an age segmentation among parents, too,” said Tom Hale, the founder, president and chief executive of Backroads.

Go general or specific

A popular option for first-timers, a general tour will hit the highlights of a destination, like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre in Paris or major sites in Tokyo and Kyoto in Japan.

Beyond the general approach, alternatives abound based on themes, styles of travel or hobbies.

Themed trips include a culinary tour of Sicily , a deep dive into literary England , Europe’s World War II battlefields and how women live in India .

In addition to topics, trips often revolve around the means of travel, such as going by train , on foot or by boat (a category that can be further segmented by size, from a cruise ship to a barge or a kayak ).

Tours can also allow you to pursue an interest like swimming or knitting in a unique destination.

Analyze tour inclusions

Once you determine where and how you want to go, prices will range from budget to luxury.

“For travelers on a budget, large group tours tend to be the best fit because it’s a great way to see major attractions at a lower price point,” said Cheyenne Schriefer, a travel adviser and the owner of All Travel Matters in Golden Valley, N.D.

But not all tours are built the same. To compare them, consider what they include.

For example, G Adventures has a 10-day hiking trip in Switzerland from $1,799 a person and a 10-day hiking trip in Portugal for $4,499. The latter is billed as a luxury trip, so the accommodations are pricier, but it also includes most meals, transfers and activities. The Swiss tour offers more basic lodgings, transfers, optional activities available for a fee, and fewer meals.

“Sometimes fewer inclusions are better than more,” said Pauline Frommer, co-president of Frommer Media, which publishes Frommer’s guidebooks . She pointed out that restaurants that can accommodate busloads probably don’t attract local traffic and that independent sightseeing allows you to “wander through local neighborhoods to get the feel of local life.”

Expertise of the guide or tour leader can also alter the price and the experience. You can expect to pay more for a tour led by a specialist, such as an Egyptologist guiding a group along the Nile.

Gauge your level of independence

Do you prefer to follow a strict schedule that relieves you from having to find, say, a restaurant for dinner? Or do you appreciate some structure — like knowing your hotel reservations are covered — but also want free time to explore independently?

Tour companies run the gamut. Before booking, read the itineraries carefully to find out if the schedule is tight or loose. If that is not clear, call the company to ask.

For truly independent travelers, self-guided tours offered by companies such as Inntravel , Exodus Adventure Travels and Macs Adventure make your ground arrangements and provide an itinerary to follow. Popular in Europe, these itineraries tend to be inn-to-inn walking or cycling trips that include luggage transfers.

“Self-guided travelers are independent but love the support of having a trip arranged for them, and they don’t want to hike with a big backpack anymore,” said Jasper Verlaan, the U.S. sales director for Macs Adventure.

Ask for recommendations

If you’re still unsure about putting down a deposit once you’ve done your research, ask the tour company if you may speak to a past client.

“Ask for references,” said Lynn Cutler, the senior vice president of travel for Smithsonian Enterprises, which runs the tour company Smithsonian Journeys . “We’ll find them a traveler who has done this trip in the past and put them in touch.”

'Personal heritage journeys' bring travelers much closer to their family's stories

Talk about getting to know the family better.

A service operated by Kensington Tours and the genealogy website Ancestry provides a fascinating chance for people to connect with their heritage on a far deeper level than a typical tourist trip – by going to the very places their ancestors lived.

One traveler who has taken a "personal heritage journey" with Kensington Tours is Elizabeth Dobson of London, Ontario. She became interested in genealogy after she retired in 2015, she told Fox News Digital in a phone interview.

MAN TRAVELS THE WORLD ON A CRUISE SHIP FOR FREE AFTER QUITTING HIS DAY JOB: 'HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH'

"My dad, before he died, told me that we had an artist in the family [who] was in the royal court," she said. Dobson made it her mission to find out as much as she could about her great-great-grandfather, William Charles Thomas Dobson.

She had a membership with Ancestry, she said, and had even had her DNA analyzed by the company.

"I signed up for a heritage tour, which involved genealogists doing professional research on my great-great-grandfather and forwarding that to me and forwarding that to the tour agents at Kensington Tours — who then devised a custom trip for me to find out about my great-great-grandfather," she said.

In May 2024, she embarked with her niece, spending 12 days tracing her relative's footsteps in England.

She even visited the Spyglass Inn on the Isle of Wight, where he died in one of the rented apartments in the late 19th century.

4 TIPS AND TRICKS FOR FLYING WITH CHECKED BAGS: 'LUGGAGE WILL GET LOST'

Dobson was also able to view some of his paintings kept in museum storage .

One of the more touching moments of her trip, she told Fox News Digital, was visiting her great-great-grandfather's gravesite.

"We found his grave and my great-great-grandmother's grave and one of my great-uncle's … sons was buried there. We brought with us flowers from London, and we put them on the graves of the three different people," Dobson said.

"That was quite important."

Kensington Tours first teamed up with Ancestry in 2020, Jason Susinski, director of product for Italy and France at Kensington Tours, told Fox News Digital in an interview.

The travel company specializes in individualized trips and tours, according to its website.

"We worked very closely with [Ancestry] to develop a range of itineraries that could reflect some of the more common destinations," he said, that travelers were showing interest in "for heritage reasons."

RETIRED COUPLE FROM VIRGINIA IS TRAVELING TO EVERY ONE OF THIS RESTAURANT CHAIN'S LOCATIONS IN THE USA

The link between the two companies is "the perfect marriage," he said.

Each "personal heritage journey" is entirely unique, said Susinski, who is based in Ottawa. Rather than taking people to major tourist destinations, the personal heritage journey enables travelers, via private tours, to visit the small towns where their relatives originated, he said.

Anyone interested in the journeys is "put in touch with genealogists from Ancestry, and they work together to uncover their family's story," Susinski said.

"Once that family story has been uncovered, they share that information with our destination experts, and our destination experts will craft the trip."

"We craft the itineraries according to hotel preference and length of stay," he said.

"And often, we find these trips are a combination of heritage exploration, as well as a more generalized visit to the country."

Those seeking to embark on personal heritage journeys through Kensington Tours gain access to genealogical services that are not typically available to the average person, Susinski said.

"They do work with genealogists who are locally based in most of the countries in Europe that we service," he said.

Those genealogists, fluent in the local languages of the area, Susinski said, "are able to access local archives, which typically aren't translated – and often these records aren't digitized."

He added, "So it means going to a city archive or even going to cemeteries and looking at tombstones, things that simply aren't possible if you are on the other side of the ocean."

Popular destinations for these types of tours include Ireland, France, Japan and New York City, Susinski said.

And because the areas they travel to often are not major tourist destinations, travelers have sometimes found themselves meeting long-lost relatives.

"We're taking clients into very small towns, remote villages," he said.

"These are little places that have maybe one church, one or two cemeteries – very much a slow, small, rustic way of life."

Visitors, like the ones on the tour, often "stand out" and "attract local attention."

"We've heard stories where a guide, with the clients, will be walking down a street and a local approached them and asked why they're in this town," he said.

Popular destinations for these types of tours include Ireland, France, Japan and New York City, Susinski said.

"And that leads to a back and forth, and they find out that the person they've spoken to is connected to the family by multiple generations," Susinski said.

"It's a really interesting way to bring these stories full circle."

He added, "To see the walls or to step on the grounds where their family members had stepped is deeply meaningful."

First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs set to be demolished, church email says

26 people were killed during a sunday service on nov. 5, 2017.

Mason Hickok , Digital Journalist

Erica Hernandez , Courthouse Reporter

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas – Nearly seven years after 26 people were killed at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs , church members are learning of plans to demolish the building.

An email obtained Monday by KSAT sent to members by the church’s pastor announced the building would be closed but did not indicate a day when the demolition would take place.

Twenty-six people were killed by a gunman during a Sunday service in 2017. The sanctuary has since been turned into a memorial honoring the victims.

The email said the sanctuary would be open for final visits on July 1 and 2.

In early June, a lawsuit was filed alleging that memberships were thrown out before a vote on the church building’s future was held.

KSAT has reached out to church leadership for more information on demolition plans.

Zambia is another of Africa’s great wildlife destinations and shares the mighty Zambezi River and the magnificent Victoria Falls with Zimbabwe.

Located north of Zimbabwe and covering an area of 752,614 sq.kms, Zambia has an average altitude of about 1,300 metres above sea level giving it a gentle climate. It is a country with vast lakes and wetlands, a multitude of waterfalls and some large, long rivers that include the Zambezi, Kafue and Luangwa. With a population of 17 million, Zambia’s people are warm and welcoming and comprise 72 different ethnic groups.

The Victoria Falls, located just outside the town of Livingstone, attracts a constant stream of visitors who stand in awe of this most incredible natural spectacle and enjoy a wide range of adventure and activities on offer. Livingstone also offers a variety of wonderful accommodation and restaurants and has colourful markets.

Lusaka is the capital of Zambia and though not a tourist destination in itself, serves as the hub between the various game parks.

Although Victoria Falls is the most visited destination in Zambia, it is the game parks of South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue and Liuwa Plains that make Zambia one of the top wildlife destinations in Africa.

South Luangwa National Park is Zambia’s prime wildlife destination and is also where walking safaris originated. Within all these parks you will find excellent safari camps and lodges and very experienced guides and staff that together offer exceptional safari experiences.

Almost a third of Zambia’s landmass comprises national parks and game reserves and the tourism sector value conservation very highly.

Experiences

Lodge safaris.

Apart from the luxury of staying in a lodge, the spectacular location and setting of most lodges in Zambia add greatly to your safari experience. Lodges include luxury tented camps and bush camps that make you feel like you are on safari but with all the added creature comforts and tantalizing food.

The highlight of a lodge safari experience is the thrill of open vehicle game drives with a potential surprise around every corner.

Gameviewing

Explore the different habitats on an Open Safari Vehicle in search of wildlife and birds. Most of us have an undying fascination of large cats like lion and leopard as well as the big game species such as elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and a variety of antelope. But don’t ignore the smaller animals and the unbelievably diverse birdlife whose antics and calls create a special atmosphere in the bush.

Your guide has the ability to make your wildife experience rewarding, observing every sign that may lead you to that elusive predator or special sighting. Knowledge and experience coupled with an engaging spirit and passion for the bush will rub off on you and add that extra thrill. A guide’s job is to entertain his guests and keep them on their seats. The level of guiding in Zambia is high and most guides have spent a large part of their lives in the bush.

A day on safari normally starts with a very early wake up call followed by coffee/tea and a snack. Then hop onto your open vehicle and set off on a game drive lasting 3 to 4 hours. It is customary to stop at a scenic spot enroute for another drink and snack and absorb the wonderful bush atmosphere. Then back to your camp or lodge for breakfast or brunch to share your experiences and feast on good memories and great photos.

Night drives offer you the possibility of seeing nocturnal animals that are not visible during the day as well as those animals that are active at night such as most predators.

Walking Safaris

A walking safari is the ultimate bush experience, allowing you to enter the space of wild animals, see their tracks and signs and feel close to nature. It does not always allow for good sightings of wildlife as their sharp senses will often perceive your presence before you spot them and cause them to take flight, But a good guide who knows his territory and notes the wind direction may bring you within a reasonable distance to observe wildlife and birds.

You will also learn more about the smaller animals, trees and ecology of the area as well as the cultural use of plants and how African people survive in the bush.

Europe is a year-round destination with varying climates across its many countries and regions. The best time to visit Europe depends on what type of experience you’d like to have and which destinations you’ll be visiting.

  • Summer. A popular time to travel to Europe is summer because warm, sunny days lend themselves to exploring the outdoors. In July, the average high temperature in London, England, is in the 70s Fahrenheit—while in Rome, Italy, the average high is in the 80s.
  • Spring and Fall. Some travelers prefer to travel on our Europe tour packages during the spring and fall because temperatures are more comfortable and popular sites are less crowded.
  • Winter. A wonderful time to take a European tour is the winter. During this time of year, travelers can stroll through festive holiday markets, visit excellent museums, and settle in for tasty meals of seasonal specialties. To take the stress out of planning a winter trip, we even offer Europe trip packages specifically designed for visiting  Christmas markets .

One of the main benefits of joining our guided tours of Europe is having the opportunity to visit must-see sites with an expert leading the way. When you go guided with Go Ahead we’ll help you skip the long lines at popular landmarks. Here are some attractions you’ll get the opportunity to see on our group tours of Europe:

  • The Colosseum in Rome, Italy
  • The National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy
  • St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy
  • The Alhambra in Granada, Spain
  • The Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain
  • La Sagrada Família church in Barcelona, Spain

  • The Hungarian Parliament building in Budapest, Hungary
  • Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria
  • The Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, Norway
  • Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, Denmark

We recommend you spend at least six days in Europe. While our most popular Europe tours run from 10–14 days, you can enjoy a shorter trip if you limit your tour to one country or visit a handful of cities in neighboring countries.

Yes! The holidays are an exciting time to travel on our Europe trips because they offer an exceptional opportunity to visit Europe’s Christmas Markets  and to experience countries’ unique holiday traditions. The holidays are a magical time in many European countries, allowing you to soak in the seasonal ambiance, enjoy festive food, and pick up unique gifts.

Thankfully, that’s a tough question to answer, as so many European countries offer delicious food. Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference, so you’re sure to find something you love no matter which country you visit. One strong contender for the top spot, however, is Italy.

Best known for its pasta, pizza, cheeses, and gelato, Italy is a foodie’s delight. That’s because the purest expression of Italian cooking relies on farm-fresh ingredients, and the cuisine changes from region to region. Fresh, delicious, and unlike anything you’ve tried outside the country, Italian food never disappoints the palate.

Wondering what to eat in Italy? Check out these regional dishes →

Another foodie's favorite destination in Europe is France. From its boeuf bourguignon to its pain au chocolat, France is known for its world-class culinary scene and timeless favorite dishes. While you’re guaranteed to taste delicious dishes no matter where you travel to France , the type of French food you’ll find depends on the region and season. The north of France features heavier dishes; the south features fresh fish, lean meat, and grilled vegetables.

While individual countries take pride in their languages, English is widely spoken in Europe.

We recommend packing light for your trip to Europe. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. After you’ve reserved one of our Europe tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.

  • Sun protection. For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Europe, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Layers. For tours of Europe, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. Because you’ll be exploring new destinations with local guides while on your trip, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential. Whether hitting the landmarks of London or on a walking tour of Amsterdam, you’ll be glad you brought your most comfortable footwear.
  • Dressier attire. You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance on any of our Europe trips.
  • Full-coverage layers for religious sites. In Europe, it is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and entrance may be denied on this basis.
  • Other must-bring items. A camera to take photos during your journey, and a notebook for jotting down notes or recommendations your Tour Director shares.
