Star Trek 4 cast: Who's going to be in Star Trek 4?

Star trek 4 plot: what's going to happen in star trek 4, star trek 4 trailer: any star trek 4 footage yet.

Star Trek 4 has edged a little closer to finally happening, as the movie has found a new writer .

In March 2024, it was reported that Steve Yockey – who developed The Flight Attendant – had been hired to write a new draft of the fourth movie, which is intended to bring back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldaña.

This is separate from the other two Star Trek movies in the works: a prequel movie directed by Toby Haynes and Star Trek: Discovery spin-off Section 31 , which finished filming in March 2024.

Back to Star Trek 4, though, and the long-gestating movie finally looked to be on track in February 2022 when it was announced that JJ Abrams was returning to produce with Matt Shakman directing, to the surprise of the cast as much as the fans.

Unfortunately, Shakman left the movie in August 2022 to direct Fantastic Four for Marvel instead . And then in September 2022, Paramount took the movie off the release calendar entirely, but at least it sounds like a director search is ongoing.

In March 2023, JJ Abrams – who has produced all three movies in the reboot trilogy and directed two of them – said that a search for a director is ongoing.

"I will say it's the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one," he told Esquire . Of course, Pine also called the franchise "cursed" so it depends how hopeful you feel like being.

All we really know right now is that Star Trek 4 is in active development at Paramount, even if we don't know exactly when it will be released.

But while we wait, here's everything you need to know about the (potential) return of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek 4 .

When can we expect Star Trek 4?

Once upon a time, Star Trek 4 was scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 22, 2023.

Of course, that never happened, and as mentioned above, Star Trek 4 hasn't got a confirmed release date as of April 2024. There's no rumours either about when it could reappear on the schedule.

In June 2022, prior to Shakman leaving the project, Paramount boss Brian Robbins did confirm development was under way on the fourth Star Trek . "We're deep into it with JJ Abrams, and it feels like we're getting close to the starting line and excited about where we're going creatively," he said .

However, in November 2022, star Zachary Quinto told The Independent : "At this point, I honestly have very little attachment to it.

"All of us would like to come back and make another movie, but I’ve learnt to only get excited about things I know are actually real. And there's nothing about a fourth Star Trek movie that feels real right now."

Other people involved seem to have faith in the project moving forward, though, and hopefully a new writer joining is a positive step.

All we can do is watch this space.

star trek

Even when Star Trek 4 was originally being released in December 2023, it hadn't been 100% confirmed that the reboot cast would be back.

That being said, during his June 2022 announcement, Robbins did say he knew audience "wants that cast in this movie" – referring to the reboot cast.

So, if it ever does come to fruition, we'd be surprised if it was with a brand-new cast. You can likely then expect the returns of Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldaña (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu) and Simon Pegg (Scotty).

Urban certainly seems keen for a return, although he also revealed in March 2022 that, like Pine, he hadn't read a script yet . "I would love to work with those guys again; so much fun, the best hang. We'll see," he enthused.

It all feels very up in the air, as per Quinto's quotes, but that doesn't mean we can't hope.

The initial plan for the fourth movie was to have a timey-wimey adventure that featured Chris Pine's James T Kirk somehow joining forces with his long-dead dad, played by Chris Hemsworth .

Hemsworth opened up in May 2019 about why he stepped away from the movie , saying: "I didn't feel like we landed on a reason to revisit that yet. I didn't want to be underwhelmed by what I was going to bring to the table."

It's unclear if this new version of Star Trek 4 plans to bring Hemsworth back or if it's gone in a totally new direction, but Hemsworth seems open to a return for the fourth movie.

In October 2022, Rings of Power bosses JD Payne and Patrick McKay teased more about what their original idea for the fourth movie was going to be. "The conceit was that through a cosmic quirk in the Star Trek world, they were the same age," McKay explained.

We also don't know yet whether the new movie will recast Pavel Chekov following Anton Yelchin's tragic death in 2016. "It's bittersweet because we are coming together for a fourth time, and one of us is no longer with us," Saldaña said in March 2022 .

"But we honestly feel that going back and keeping the Star Trek family together is a way to really keep him alive in our thoughts and our hearts."

Star Trek Beyond Zoe Saldana as Uhura

Right now, we don't have any confirmed plot details for the fourth movie, and it's not clear how closely it'll follow on from the ending of Star Trek Beyond .

The third movie ended with Kirk declining the promotion to vice admiral and staying as the captain of the USS Enterprise. Spock also chose to remain in Starfleet and reignited his romance with Uhura.

As the movie ends, they're all set to continue their mission on a brand-new USS Enterprise after the previous one was destroyed during the movie's events.

star trek beyond trailer grab

It means that the fourth movie can go anywhere. But, for Pine, he believes that whatever the plot is, it shouldn't try to compete with Marvel .

"I've always thought that Star Trek should operate in the zone that is smaller. You know, it's not a Marvel appeal. It's like, let's make the movie for the people that love this group of people, that love this story, that love Star Trek ," he said.

"Let's make it for them and then, if people want to come to the party, great. But make it for a price and make it, so that if it makes a half-billion dollars, that's really good."

You're kidding, right? We'd love to get all timey-wimey ourselves and show you a trailer for Star Trek 4 from the future, but we're stuck in the Mirror Universe.

J.J. Abrams rebooted the "Star Trek" franchise in 2009, and since then, the three films in the new Kelvin timeline have been a smashing success. Altogether, the first "Trek" reboot, 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness," and 2016's "Star Trek Beyond" have grossed more than a billion dollars at the global box office. They've also done fairly well critically. With all that love, it seems pretty obvious that Hollywood would want to get "Star Trek 4" to theater screens at warp speed.

However, the road to "Star Trek 4" has not been a smooth one. In fact, it's been filled with starts and stops, various creatives coming and going, and a release date that keeps getting beamed all over the place. What do we actually know about the fourth installment of the "Star Trek" reboot series, and what will it look like when it finally makes first contact? Read on for everything we know so far about "Star Trek 4."

What is the release date for Star Trek 4?

"Star Trek 4" has been in the works for a long time ... a really long time. In June 2015, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Chris Pine (Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Spock) had signed up for "Star Trek 4." But Pine and Chris Hemsworth (who was said to be returning as Kirk's dad) allegedly left a potential fourth project over pay disputes in 2018, and in 2019, it was announced that the film had been shelved. Eventually, the project started moving again and earned a release date of June 9, 2023, but that got kicked back to December 22, 2023 ... before vanishing from the release slate completely.

We have reason to believe "Star Trek 4" is still in the works, however. Speaking with Collider , former director Matt Shakman (who left the project to direct "Fantastic Four") said, "I think what they're still working on is a version of what I have been working on for the time that I was involved." In August 2023, Quinto added his own take on the likelihood of a fourth outing. "I think there's a lot of other stuff, creative things. It's complicated," the actor remarked (via TrekMovie.com ). He continued, "I don't know if and when it will happen ... And if coalesces again and we come back and we're able to do it, wonderful. If not, we had a great run."

In a September 2023 piece on the end of the Writers Guild of America strike, Variety reported that Paramount was looking to polish a "Star Trek 4" script. Another promising nugget of info emerged around this time, when writer-director Lindsey Anderson Beer, who co-wrote a prospective "Star Trek 4" script, told Collider , "It's still on the tracks." So, "Star Trek 4" isn't dead in the water, and with the 2023 Hollywood strikes ended, a major obstacle is gone. But that's pretty much all we know.

What is the plot of Star Trek 4?

At this point, no plot details for the upcoming fourth "Star Trek" movie have been revealed. Some proposed paths forward have been rumored to involve alternate timelines, or even another reboot — especially Tarantino's attempt — but they've all fallen by the wayside. For now, we can probably assume "Star Trek 4" will take place after the events of 2016's "Star Trek Beyond," which was directed by Justin Lin of the  "Fast and Furious" franchise .

In "Star Trek Beyond," Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise see their beloved ship crash on the planet Altamid after an ambush by a pre-Federation human soldier, Idris Elba's Captain Balthazar Edison. When Kirk and the gang discover Edison's plans to use an ancient bioweapon to destroy the Federation, they're forced to stop him — without the help of their ship. That film also explores the death of Leonard Nimoy's Ambassador Spock, as well as relationship troubles between Spock and Uhura.

One story we know "Star Trek 4" won't be exploring is a reunion between Captain Kirk and his father George, courtesy of time travel. Chris Hemsworth briefly played George Kirk in 2009's "Star Trek," but turned down a chance to reprise the role in a bigger story in 2018. "Star Trek 4" also won't tie into any of the current "Star Trek" TV series, like "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" or "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Those series take place in a universe separate from the Kelvin timeline.

Who is starring in Star Trek 4?

You'd expect a "Star Trek" movie set in the Kelvin timeline to feature the return of the ol' gang, right? Why, yes, you would. However, nothing has been easy about getting "Star Trek 4" off the ground, and that includes bringing back the original cast. In 2018, Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth reportedly walked away from the project over pay disputes. In February 2022, when producer J.J. Abrams announced that "Star Trek 4" was finally moving ahead, new behind-the-scenes drama erupted. While Abrams said the original stars were returning, none of the actors had officially agreed to the project.

In March 2022, Pine told Variety about his reaction to the "Star Trek 4" announcement: "I think everybody was like, 'Did you hear about this?' We're usually the last people to find out, but I do know we're all excited. Whenever they want to send us a script, we're ready for it." Karl Urban had a similar stance, telling the U.K.'s Radio X (via TrekMovie.com ) in May 2022, "I have heard that it is happening, but I've been hearing that for the last three years ... All I know is they are developing it, they're writing a script, and I know 100% that we all want to come back and do it. So I think it's all just a matter of logistics and timing at this point."

Sofia Boutella — who played Jaylah in "Star Trek Beyond" — also expressed interest in returning, saying (via Fandom Spotlite ), "I would love to see [Jaylah] evolve with all of the guys ... I would do it in a heartbeat." However, Zachary Quinto seems a bit wary of the whole thing. During a November 2022 interview with The Independent , the actor said, "At this point, I honestly have very little attachment to it. All of us would like to come back and make another movie, but I've learnt to only get excited about things I know are actually real. And there's nothing about a fourth 'Star Trek' movie that feels real right now."

Will Star Trek 4 recast Chekov?

One of the most classic and beloved "Star Trek" characters, Pavel Chekov was memorably played in the first three Kelvin timeline movies by Anton Yelchin. Yelchin was killed in a car accident in June 2016, just one month before the release of "Star Trek Beyond." His passing has definitely been felt by both fans and his "Star Trek" cohorts.

In March 2022, when the movie was still moving forward under director Matt Shakman, Uhura actress Zoe Saldaña told Entertainment Tonight about the project. "Obviously, it's bittersweet," she remarked, "because we are coming together for a fourth time and one of us is no longer with us with Anton's passing, but we honestly feel that going back and keeping the 'Star Trek' family together is a way to really keep him alive in our thoughts and our hearts because he was such a fan. And he was such a devoted artist to the craft and also to 'Star Trek.'"

Of course, that particular version of "Star Trek 4" is no longer moving forward, but if you think Saldaña's comments indicate that Paramount won't be recasting the part of Chekov, you're probably right. In a 2016 interview with Postmedia Network , shortly after Yelchin's death, producer J.J. Abrams explained, "I would say there's no replacing him. There's no recasting. I can't possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better."

Granted, emotions were high when Abrams said they wouldn't replace Yelchin. However, there's been no indication in the years since the actor's death that a new Chekov will show up on the bridge of the Enterprise.

Who is directing Star Trek 4?

Perhaps the main reason that "Star Trek 4" hasn't happened yet is that Paramount Pictures is having a difficult time finding a director. For a moment, it looked like Quentin Tarantino was going to boldly go where he'd never gone before. J.J. Abrams was super excited about Tarantino's time-traveling concept of sending Kirk and co.  to a world of 1930s gangsters, similar to the classic "Trek" episode "A Piece of the Action." Screenwriter Mark L. Smith of "The Revenant" fame was set to pen the script, but sadly for Trekkies who wanted to see Spock quoting Ezekiel 25:17, Tarantino's vision never came to pass.

Then, it looked like S.J. Clarkson was going to make history as the first woman to helm a "Star Trek" movie. But after Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth left the project in 2018, the movie was subsequently shelved. Noah Hawley of "Fargo" fame was also working on a "Star Trek" movie — one that would've been about a brand new group of heroes — but Paramount eventually stepped in and shut things down because it wouldn't have featured the famous Enterprise crew.

The closest that "Star Trek 4" has come to happening was when Matt Shakman took the captain's seat. After he directed the entirety of the smash hit MCU series "WandaVision," the world was Shakman's oyster, and he intended to shepherd the newest entry in the "Star Trek" universe to theater screens. However, Marvel Studios was keen on working with Shakman again, and after director Jon Watts decided to step away from 2025's "Fantastic Four," the folks at Marvel asked Shakman to come back to the MCU — which he did. As a result, at the moment, "Star Trek 4" is floating through space without a captain.

Where to watch the previous Star Trek movies

While we all wait for news about "Star Trek 4," it might be a good time to go back and revisit previous installments in the "Star Trek" reboot series. If you want to watch the film that started it all and introduced us to new versions of Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and the rest of the Enterprise crew, you can stream 2009's "Star Trek" on Paramount+ . You can also rent it for $3.99 on Google Play ,  Amazon Prime Video , Apple iTunes , Vudu , and YouTube .

If you're ready for the 2013 sequel where Benedict Cumberbatch definitely doesn't play Khan Noonien Singh, you can stream "Star Trek Into Darkness" on Paramount+ . You can also rent it for $3.99 on Google Play , Apple iTunes , Vudu , and YouTube . Amazon Prime Video offers it for $4.29. If you're looking for the third film, where our heroes learn the true power of the Beastie Boys, you can stream "Star Trek Beyond" on Paramount+ . You can also rent it for $2.69 on Google Play and $3.99 on Amazon Video , Apple iTunes , Vudu , and YouTube .

New 'Star Trek' Movie Gets a 2023 Release Date

Where will the franchise boldly go now?

Ever since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond , the film franchise has been in a holding pattern. When the films first came back with 2009’s Star Trek , director J.J. Abrams gave them a heavy Star Wars sheen, which then became irrelevant when real Star Wars movies returned in 2015. While the Star Trek brand hasn’t slowed down with Paramount pumping out a bunch of Trek series including Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: Picard , and the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , not much has happened with the films. There was talk of a fourth installment that would unite Chris Pine ’s James T. Kirk with his father George Kirk, played by Chris Hemsworth , but that never came together . There was also talk of Quentin Tarantino tackling a Star Trek , but that seems more like a fleeting fancy than a serious pursuit . And then there was Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley pursuing a Trek film that then also evaporated .

And yet today Paramount announced that they’ve got an untitled Star Trek on the books for June 9, 2023. Of course, release dates are highly subject to change, and it’s now standard operating procedures for studios to claim weekends before they even have a script. The truth is that we don’t know anything about this new Trek . We don’t know if it’s a continuation of the Kelvin timeline started with Star Trek 2009 or if it’s a fresh reboot, but io9 reports that it's being produced by Abrams.

RELATED:  Exclusive: 'Star Trek' Kiss Immortalized for Gene Roddenberry Centennial

Personally, I’m hoping for the reboot route. While I think Star Trek 2009 and Star Trek Beyond are fun movies, they still feel like they don’t completely understand Trek , although Beyond gets pretty close to the 1960s TV series in terms of the scope of its adventure. But maybe the best thing for a Trek movie would be to simply rest on the brand name and build something from scratch. You could still interact with major Trek elements like the Borg or the Klingons or whatever, but you wouldn’t have to worry about alternate timelines or how your new take on Captain Kirk compares to The Original Series .

Of course, with everything being big, interconnected IP these days and Viacom gobbling CBS back up (they were previously split apart during the Kelvin timeline), my bet is on something that can link back to what’s happening on the Paramount+ series so that in the name of corporate synergy if you watch this new Star Trek movie you’ll be tempted to check out Star Trek Discovery or Star Trek: Picard or something that makes it so that the movies don’t stand alone. Everything is cinematic universes now, so why should Trek be any different.

The next Star Trek movie is scheduled for 2023

Paramount has delayed 'top gun: maverick' and 'mission: impossible 7' in a shakeup of its release calendar..

It's been five long years since the last Star Trek movie and while the next one might still be quite some time away, there's at least some light at the end of the tunnel (or wormhole) for Trekkers. Paramount Pictures has announced a June 9th, 2023 release date for an untitled Star Trek film, according to Variety . Last month, the studio hired Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez to pen the script for a movie based on an original idea of hers, but it's unclear if that's the same project.

Whether Paramount sticks to that date remains to be seen. There have been several attempts to make a follow up to Star Trek: Beyond over the last few years, including one from Quentin Tarantino , but none have panned out as yet.

Between now and the next movie coming out, fans will have several new seasons of Star Trek shows to check out on Paramount+ . Discovery and Lower Decks will return later this year, while the second season of Star Trek: Picard will arrive in 2022.

Meanwhile, Paramount has shifted around its schedule for other movies, with a knock-on effect to future films, as theaters continue to slowly reopen amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Top Gun: Maverick has moved from July 2nd to November 19th, while Mission: Impossible 7 has been delayed from the latter date to May 27th next year. The following movie in the Mission: Impossible saga will now be released on July 7th, 2023 instead of November 4th, 2022. Meanwhile, Dungeons & Dragons , which was scheduled for May 27th next year, has been delayed to March 3rd, 2023.

Star Trek Chris Pine Karl Urban Zachary Quinto Simon Pegg

They’re boldly going back.

Paramount is planning to enter negotiations for “ Star Trek ” stars Chris Pine , Zachary Quinto , Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg to return to the Enterprise for their fourth tour of duty in the venerable sci-fi franchise.

The announcement was made by J.J. Abrams during the Paramount Investors Day Presentation on Feb. 15.

“We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new ‘Star Trek’ film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take ‘Star Trek’ into areas that you’ve just never seen before,” Abrams said. “We’re thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we’re talking about that we think will be really exciting, so can’t wait for you to see what we’re cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper.”

The six actors first stepped into their respective iconic roles as Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Bones, Sulu and Scotty in 2009’s “Star Trek,” directed by Abrams, which reset the “Trek” timeline and allowed for the reboot to exist unencumbered from the hundreds of hours of “Trek” continuity that had come before. The actors returned in two sequels, 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness,” also directed by Abrams, and 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond,” directed by Justin Lin.

Popular on Variety

Abrams is producing the new, as-yet-untitled film through Bad Robot, with Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) directing from a screenplay by Josh Friedman (“Avatar 2”) and Cameron Squires (“WandaVision”) based on a earlier draft by Lindsey Beer (“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”).

Paramount was close to bringing back this cast once before: In 2018, S.J. Clarkson (“Jessica Jones”) had signed up to direct a sequel that would have reunited Pine’s Kirk with his late father, played by Chris Hemsworth reprising his performance from the 2009 “Star Trek.” That film never materialized, however, after Paramount reportedly couldn’t close a deal with Pine and Hemsworth.

Since then, insiders say the studio has done market research to determine audience interest in the rebooted cast, given the long wait period between “Beyond” — which lost money for Paramount — and a prospective new “Trek” film. Execs determined that there was still lasting audience enthusiasm for Pine, Quinto and the rest of the cast in their established roles, which allowed the studio to feel comfortable with moving forward with bringing them back.

Paramount has also explored several other avenues for “Trek” features, none of which seem to have ultimately borne fruit. Quentin Tarantino reportedly cooled on a “Star Trek” script he was pursuing with “The Revenant” screenwriter Mark L. Smith. In late 2019, Paramount tapped “Fargo” and “Legion” creator Noah Hawley to write and direct a “Trek” movie that Hawley planned to feature new actors playing new characters. But when Emma Watts became president of the Paramount Motion Picture Group a few months later, insiders say she paused all “Trek” development, including Hawley’s film , to decide how best to move forward with one of the studio’s crown jewel franchises. With Watts’ departure from Paramount in September, it’s unclear what the current “Trek” film portends for other development for the franchise, including a screenplay by “Fear the Walking Dead” co-executive producer Kalinda Vazquez .

Bringing the 2009 “Trek” cast back could prove a challenge given they’ve all had busy schedules since “Beyond.” Pine added the “Wonder Woman” franchise to his resume and he’ll next appear in Olivia Wilde’s thriller “Don’t Worry Darling” and the black-ops film “Violence of Action.” Quinto headlined the AMC series “NOS4A2,” and starred in the Broadway revival of “The Boys in the Band” and its 2020 Netflix film adaptation. Saldana continued her run as Gamora in several Marvel Studios films, including “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and “Avengers: Endgame”; she’ll star in “Avatar 2” this year and in “Guardians Vol. 3” in 2023. Urban appeared in 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and he’ll continue his performance as Billy Butcher on Season 3 of Amazon’s “The Boys” in June. Cho starred in acclaimed indies “Columbus” and “Searching,” and he starred in Netflix’s live-action adaption of the anime series “Cowboy Bebop.” And Pegg starred with Nick Frost on Amazon’s horror comedy series “Truth Seekers,” and he’ll reprise his role as Benji in “Mission: Impossible 7” in 2023.

One member of the 2009 “Trek” cast, however, sadly cannot join them. Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov, died in an accident in June 2016, a month before “Beyond” opened in theaters. At that film’s premiere at San Diego Comic Con, the cast, filmmakers and invited guests sat in a full minute of silence in tribute to the late actor.

The future never ends. At the center of Star Trek’s core message is the idea that things will go on, and arguably continue to improve, because the future never ends and through community, communication, and the need to explore, new heights will be reached and new frontiers discovered. It’s something to think about as the final season of Star Trek: Discovery airs, taking the franchise further into the future than ever before… but the story will not end when that series does.

Whether it’s William Shatner’s James T. Kirk, Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard, Avery Brooks’ Benjamin Sisko, or any of the subsequent commanders and captains of the many starships of Starfleet, generations of viewers have found themselves in good hands when it comes to navigating the outer limits of reality on a regular basis… and, these days, there are more opportunities than ever to transport into space for a trek of your own.

Even with 2023’s final season of Picard, there are no fewer than four ongoing Star Trek series right now — with even more on the way, and the return of the franchise to the big screen, with multiple movies in the works. There’s so much happening, in fact, that it’s easy to lose track… which is why you should keep reading and find out what to expect from Star Trek across the next few years. (Spoilers: the final frontier is getting a lot bigger.)

Upcoming Star Trek movies and TV show schedule

There’s no shortage of Star Trek in the pipeline for the next few years, but no official dates have been announced by CBS or Paramount for anything outside of Star Trek: Discovery season five coming in April. That doesn’t mean that we have no idea when some projects should be dropping, based on how far along they are in terms of production, or simply teases given by those involved.

Here’s a quick rundown of the projects that have been announced from Star Trek that exist on some form of schedule, however vague. (There are many unscheduled projects, which we’ll get to at warp speed, don’t worry.)

What Star Trek TV series are planned?

Star trek: prodigy, season two.

Star Trek

While Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 was originally announced to debut on Paramount+ in the winter of 2023, Paramount+ has nixed those plans — but the show was picked up by Netflix, with new episodes already announced for some point in 2024. (The first season was added to the platform in December 2023.)

Release Date: TBD 2024

Platform: Netflix

Star Trek: Lower Decks, season five

Star Trek

A fifth season for the animated comedy set in the period between Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard was announced in April 2023, but no premiere date is known. Judging by the period between order and broadcast for the fourth season, however, it’s relatively safe to assume that a new season might be ready by the end of 2024, unless the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023 threw everything entirely off schedule.

Platform: Paramount+

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, season three

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 art

As if the second season cliffhanger wasn't enough of a clue that the popular spin-off of Discovery — which is also a prequel to the original Star Trek series from the 1960s —would return, the show's third season renewal was announced back in April 2023 . But after a second season that included a half-animated crossover episode and a musical, how can they top what they've already achieved? A clue arrived in a recent article mentioning a murder mystery episode , and we’ll see what else the show is planning to wow fans when it returns at some point in 2025.

Release Date: TBD 2025

Movies & TV Shows with No Approximate Schedule Yet

Star trek: section 31.

Star Trek: Section 31

Even before the character of Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) left the Discovery narrative, rumors of a Section 31 spinoff starring the Oscar Award-winning actress have swirled. In mid-April 2023, it was officially announced that a Star Trek: Section 31 “special movie event” starring Yeoh had been greenlit by Paramount+ .

Yeoh, who originated the idea for a Section 31 spinoff herself, will serve as executive producer with Alex Kurtzman. Additional details from the announcement include the fact that Section 31 will be written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi (director of many episodes of Discovery ). However, it remains to be seen what other familiar Trek characters may appear in the show, if any. The movie is currently in post-production, which makes a late 2024 or early 2025 release likely — and Yeoh has already said that she’d be willing to make more if this one goes over well.

Release Date: TBD

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Star Trek

In late March 2023, it was announced that Starfleet Academy season 1 had been ordered. Very few details have been revealed about the series, although we do have confirmation that it will be a live-action series. The announcement refers to it being “the first time in over a century” that individuals will be admitted to the Academy implied the series will be set around the same time period as Discovery seasons 3, 4 and 5 , which was later confirmed by Paramount executives .

However, we do know some of those behind the scenes who will be involved with Starfleet Academy. Serving as showrunners and executive producers will be Kurtzman and Noga Landau. Furthermore, in a Tweet sent shortly after the series order was announced, Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome revealed that she has joined the show’s writers room.

Star Trek 4

Star Trek Beyond

In April 2021, a new Star Trek movie was announced for release on June 9, 2023. It was subsequently revealed to be a fourth movie in the Kelvin Timeline. WandaVision alum Matt Shakman was attached to the project before he accepted the directorial role for the upcoming Fantastic Four MCU adaptation; he subsequently left the project, which placed it in turnaround.

Long believed to be quietly dead, sources inside Paramount have recently said that it’s still active and in development. And yet, it's not all good news - according to Variety , the fourth entry into the Chris Pine-starring Star Trek saga will be "the final chapter” in that particular series.

Platform: Theatrical

Untitled Star Trek prequel

Having wowed fans with his work on Lucasfilm’s Andor series, director Toby Haynes is reportedly developing a new Star Trek movie set decades before J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot of the franchise , with writer Seth Grahame-Smith onboard to write. Little is known about the project including just what timeline of Trek it’s going to take place in; initial reports suggested it was part of the Kelvin timeline — which is to say, the continuity of the 2009 reboot movies — but more recently , it was described as being part of the core timeline of the franchise. (Of course, in that it’s a prequel set before Nero changed history in that 2009 movie, it’s possible that it could be both. Time travel is confusing.)

Untitled Picard movie

Picard

The open question over what, if anything, Paramount would do to follow up on the success of the third and final season of Picard might have an answer. While Picard showrunner Terry Malalas had teased a new series called Legacy — see below — Patrick Stewart revealed in a recent interview that he’s heard of a movie script written specifically for Picard, although he hadn’t read it and couldn’t give any further details. Will this feature more of the reunited TNG cast, or is it something entirely different? And is it meant as a Paramount+ project a la Section 31, or a theatrical release? Time will tell…

Platform: TBD

Potentially Abandoned Projects

Quentin tarantino’s trek.

At one point, legendary director Quentin Tarantino was talking about directing an R-rated movie set in the Star Trek universe, with another writer working from an idea he had that was reportedly a time travel movie that would take inspiration from the original series episode ‘A Piece of the Action.’ Things progressed to a small degree with writer Mark L. Smith before Tarantino decided that he didn’t want to direct it, but the screenplay exists and Tarantino has said that he’d be willing to offer notes for any new director . We can but hope this oddity one day happens.

Star Trek: Legacy

One unannounced project remains at the forefront of Trekkie agendas everywhere: the proposed Picard semi-sequel, Star Trek: Legacy. The title was revealed by Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas on Twitter in March 2023, while Picard’s wildly popular third season was being released. Matalas stated the proposed series would be set in the 25th century, following up on storylines and characters from “the Last Generation and the Next.”

While the series has yet to be officially commented upon by Paramount or CBS, fans have signed online petitions in support of the idea, and at least one Trek executive seems in favor; In interviews in support of Strange New Worlds season 2, Akiva Goldsman voiced his continued advocacy for a continuation of the vision Matalas has for the Franchise. “Let me put it this way,” Goldsman said during an interview with CinemaBlend. “I signed the petition too.”

It’s unclear whether or not the Picard movie project mentioned above is a variation on the Legacy idea, or an entirely separate project.

Is Star Trek 4 confirmed?

As we mentioned earlier, a fourth and final Star Trek movie set in the Kelvin Timeline — the alternate timeline created with J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot of the franchise, featuring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Karl Urban as Kirk, Spock, and Bones, respectively — is in development, although it’s unclear at what stage at time of writing. Certainly all parties involved seem to want to make it happen, so at this point, we should consider it a question of when it’ll happen.

What is the most current Star Trek?

Currently, episodes of the final season of Star Trek: Discovery are airing on Thursdays on Paramount+, running through the end of May 2024.

What’s the next Star Trek series?

At time of current writing, the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy is anticipated to be the next Star Trek show to debut, at some point on Netflix. The next all-new series to debut will be Starfleet Academy, which we can likely expect at some point in 2025.

Will there be another Star Trek with Jack Crusher?

One of the breakout stars of Picard, season 3, Ed Speleere portrays Jack Crusher, a new addition to the Star Trek universe with ties that go back generations (or at least, to the new one). After the third season fo the Patrick Stewart-starring spinoff wrapped, fans were very curious about whether we'd see Crusher again.

Unfortunately, there's no confirmed answer to this question. However, that hasn't stopped folks like Susana Polo at Polygon from speculating about Crusher's future, particularly how it could connect to the rumors of Star Trek: Legacy. Be warned before you read that speculation, though; it contains major spoilers for Picard season 3.

New 'Star Trek' movie featuring Picard is on the way, Patrick Stewart says

Three seasons wasn't enough of an epilogue it seems for nostalgia's favorite Starfleet admiral.

This is beginning to feel like the "Police Academy" sequels. Can't we just start with something new?

Patrick Stewart isn't ready to give up being Jean-Luc Picard.

The third season of the "Next Generation" spin-off " Picard " centered around the titular Starfleet captain ended in April of last year after successfully polarizing "Star Trek" fans. Many were turned off from the final season because it was very much a cookie-cutter carbon copy of the last two, relying heavily, once again, on attempting to remain suspenseful by applying a what's-in-the-box?! style of storytelling.

But it turns out we may be seeing more of Jean-Luc. Stewart appeared recently on an episode of the podcast Happy Sad Confused , hosted by  Josh Horowitz to discuss the experience of playing the role of Jean-Luc Picard.

"After we finished recording our seven seasons of 'Next Generation' we made four Star Trek movies of varying qualities, the best one being ['First Contact'], directed by Jonathan Frakes. He was one of the people who had the most influence on me on the show because of his experience and his understanding of the complexities and how bringing different qualities onto the stage was very, very important in diversity and change," Stewart said.

As he continued, however, Stewart made a surprise statement, saying that there was a "Star Trek" movie script being written with him in mind.

"So it's an ongoing procedure for me. I heard only last night about a script that is being written, but written specifically with the actor, Patrick [Stewart], to play in it. And I've been told to expect to receive it within a week or so. I'm so excited because it sounds like the kind of project where the experimentation that I want to do will be essential for this kind of material. It's good at 83…"

Terry Matalas did a fine job paying tribute to "The Next Generation", the thing is, it's just 21 years too late

The recording took place in November at about the time that Stewart was promoting his new memoir, "Making It So" and this is the latest "Star Trek" movie rumor to circulate as The Hollywood Reporter ran a story just a day or so ago that Toby Haynes, who directed episodes " Andor " will helm a new feature, with Seth Grahame-Smith writing.

The plot is said to take place within the Kelvin Universe, decades before the events of 2009’s Star Trek, which J.J. Abrams directed and Bad Robot will produce the movie.

Then there are the circulating rumors involving the new TV shows, like the Section 31 and Starfleet Academy spin-offs.

"What was so interesting about Picard, and the main reason why I decided to commit to three seasons of it was that Akiva Goldsman talked to me about the changes that had happened in my life in the last 20 years. And he said, 'Were there any?' and of course, I said yes there were lots and lots and new journeys and new experiences and relationships," said Stewart.

"And he said, 'Exactly! Well that has also been Jean-Luc’s experience.' He’s not the same man. He’s no longer captain of the Enterprise. He was made an admiral. It became really desk work, which is not what he ever wanted to do. And now he’s back at home, living on his vineyard and seeming to be reasonably content. All that was an act. All that was Jean-Luc trying to pretend, as I think my father did, that everything was all right. But it wasn’t," Stewart added.

  • crazywater Not sure what the author is referring to but the final season of Picard was what the first two seasons should have been. Seasons 1 and 2 were embarrassingly bad and not Star Trek. Season 3 was terrific. Thank God Patrick Stewart was removed from creative control. If he gets that role back for this movie it will probably revert back to the garbage from the first two season. New 'Star Trek' film set for summer 2023, as studios shuffle several releases

star trek movies coming out

Star Trek is bolding coming back to the big screen... two years from now. Paramount Pictures  confirmed Friday that a brand-new Trek film will hit theaters on June 8, 2023. While the project is currently untitled and plot details are non-existent, we suspect this is the movie currently being written by The Walking Dead alum, Kalinda Vasquez.

Until last summer, the studio was said to be developing several films set within the long-running sci-fi universe (including pitches from Noah Hawley and Quentin Tarantino ). Right now, it's unclear if Vasquez's screenplay will continue J.J. Abrams' rebooted canon or go in a different direction. In any case, Abrams' production company, Bad Robot, is still attached to the cinematic franchise.

In yet another round of tentpole reshuffling amidst the COVID-19 pandemic , Paramount also announced a number of fresh release dates for a slew of upcoming blockbusters. The  G.I. Joe origin film,  Snake Eyes , has been moved up to July 23 from Oct. 22., while Christopher McQuarrie's next two Mission: Impossible films have been delayed yet again. The seventh installment  will vacate Nov. 19, 2021 in favor of May 27, 2022;  M:I 8 , on the other hand, was pushed from November 4, 2022 to July 7, 2023. Meanwhile, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein's big-budget adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons has rolled from May 27, 2022 to March 3, 2023.

Last but not least,  The Shrinking of Treehorn (a big screen take on the 1971 children's book of the same name ) and an untitled feature starring John Krasinski and Ryan Reynolds have been set for Nov. 10, 2023 and Nov. 17, 2023, respectively.

With Paramount mostly vacating summer 2021 — save for A Quiet Place Part II over Memorial Day weekend — Universal Pictures has swooped in to move The Forever Purge  up a week to July 2, Deadline reports . The Fourth of July holiday was originally being held for Paramount's  Top Gun: Maverick , which is now in a holding pattern until this year's Thanksigiving season. The latest bout of  Purge -based anarchy will now go head-to-head with Sony's Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway  and Universal's Fast & Furious 9  (opening the previous week on June 25). Disney and Marvel Studios' Black Widow is set to be released the following week on July 9.

‘Star Trek’ Origin Story Movie Will Be Set Decades Before 2009 Film

CinemaCon 2024: The new project will be produced by longtime “Star Trek” steward J.J. Abrams

star-trek-2009-chris-pine-zachary-quinto

Paramount Pictures is ready to boldly go (again).

After rumors circulated earlier this year, Paramount officially announced a new “Star Trek” prequel film on Thursday, this time taking place decades before the original 2009 “Star Trek” feature.

“Andor” director Toby Haynes will direct from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith (who is also writing another hotly touted CinemaCon title, the third “Now You See Me” film). J.J. Abrams is returning to produce.

But then again, we’ve heard about a new “Star Trek” movie before.

star trek movies coming out

During the run-up to “Star Trek Beyond” in 2016, it was revealed that a fourth film would reunite Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk with his deceased father (played, once again, by Chris Hemsworth). A year later, Quentin Tarantino approached Paramount about doing a “Star Trek” movie – this time as an R-rated gangster movie (based, in part, on the 1968 episode of the original series “A Piece of the Action”). In 2018 S.J. Clarkson, a TV vet who would eventually direct “Madame Web,” was hired to direct the fourth film in the Abrams-verse, but salary disputes led to Pine and Hemsworth leaving the project. That version was canceled in 2019 and Tarantino stated in 2020 that he wouldn’t be making his “Star Trek” either.

In November 2019 “Fargo” creator Noah Hawley was hired to write and direct a new “Star Trek” film based on his version of the series. A year later, this movie was canceled by new Paramount Pictures president Emma Watts. In 2021 “Star Trek: Discovery” writer Kalinda Vazquez was hired to write a version based on her original pitch, but a separate script was being developed by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The studio even set a summer 2023 release date for a new “Trek” (which “Trek” was the question).

In 2021 that release date was pushed to Christmas 2023, under the direction of “WandaVision” director Matt Shakman. Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires were brought on to retool the script. In early 2022 it was announced that the stars of the three previous “Star Trek” installments in the Abrams-verse would all be returning, although it was later reported that the actors had not entered negotiations to return.

In 2022 Shakman left “Star Trek” to join Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four.” But just last month Steve Yockey was hired to write a fourth “Star Trek” movie.

Now, we are finally getting word of another film in development, with another writer/director team. But it’s not the first time that a “Star Trek” prequel script has been floated, as Erik Jendresen, cowriter of “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning,” had submitted a script for “Star Trek: The Beginning” before J.J. had taken over and pitched his 2009 version. It depicted the Earth-Romulan War.

Star Trek’s J.J. Abrams Advised Chris Pine to Be ‘Less Shatner’ While Portraying James T. Kirk

Chris Pine reflects on playing James T. Kirk in the latest Star Trek movies, and the actor acknowledges those wonderful "Shatnerisms."

  • J.J. Abrams advised Chris Pine to embody "less Shatner" when portraying James T. Kirk in the big-screen reboot of Star Trek.
  • Pine starred as Captain Kirk in all three reboot films; he says the franchise feels "cursed."
  • A new Star Trek movie is part of Paramount's "intent," according to Roddenberry Entertainment's C.O.O.

“Less Shatner.” Those two little words encompassed the advice filmmaker J.J. Abrams had for Chris Pine when the two collaborated on the big-screen reboot of the Star Trek franchise, which began in 2009. Pine was tasked with picking up the enormous mantle of the iconic character, James T. Kirk, who was portrayed brilliantly by William Shatner from 1966 until 1994. Pine said in an interview during his appearance on the Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me podcast:

“I think the biggest correction that J.J. [Abrams] ever had for me was ‘less Shatner.’ Because it’s so deliciously fun. I mean, anything from how he sits in the chair to how he does a double take. There are many… the Shatnerisms are long and deep, and they’re beautiful. They’re beautifully crafted.”

Pine starred as James T. Kirk in all three of the reboot films, which began with Star Trek (2009) and was followed up by the sequels Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond . Abrams directed the first two movies, but he turned the director’s chair over to Justin Lin for the third installment. And nearly eight years have passed since Star Trek Beyond , and Star Trek 4 has still yet to warp speed into movie theaters.

Chris Pine Believes the Star Trek Franchise Is 'Cursed'

While J.J Abrams’ 2009 reboot certainly isn’t the best of the Star Trek films, both critics and audiences alike enjoyed the U.S.S. Enterprise’s encounter with the rogue Romulan Nero (Eric Bana), which featured the return of Leonard Nimoy as the original Mr. Spock. Abrams’ new vision of the sci-fi phenomenon also made $385.7 million worldwide (per Box Office Mojo ). So, a sequel was inevitable. And in the summer of 2013, Kirk and crew faced off against Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch) in Star Trek Into Darkness .

Star Trek Into Darkness made even more money ($467.4 million) than Star Trek (2009) did globally, but 2016’s Star Trek Beyond didn’t fare as well as its predecessors ($343.5 million), and the reboot series has been in limbo ever since. Co-star Zoe Saldaña (Lt. Uhura) still has hope that Star Trek 4 will come to fruition. But when it comes to the Star Trek franchise, Pine “feels like it’s cursed,” according to an interview he did with Esquire in 2023.

Star Trek 4: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and Everything Else We Know

In March of this year, the C.O.O./President of Development for Roddenberry Entertainment, Trevor Roth, said “there is a plan” for a new Star Trek movie. Roth elaborated on the possibility in the same interview conducted at the SXSW film festival:

“I am not able to say much, but I can say that it is Paramount's intent to figure out the Star Trek side of movies and what's going on there. There's every intent of a new movie coming out in the very near future. There's a lot of secrecy around what's going to happen there. But there is a plan getting into place. And we're very excited to see it return to the big screen.”

Most recently, Pine wrote and directed his first feature film, Poolman. Pine also stars alongside Danny DeVito in the comedic mystery, which opens exclusively in theaters on May 10. And fans can watch the Poolman trailer right now.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Series Finale Ending Explained

The Star Wars: The Bad Batch series finale leaves some big questions out there for fans to ponder. Here's how it all goes down.

(L-R): Wrecker, Batcher, Omega, Hunter, and Crosshair in a scene from "STAR WARS: THE BAD BATCH", season 3 exclusively on Disney+.

This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3 episode 15.

After a rollercoaster journey of three seasons and 47 episodes, Star Wars: The Bad Batch has finally come to an end. The beloved Clone Force 99 have hung up their helmets in an epic 50-minute finale that rounds off their stories while also setting up the future of the galaxy far, far away. Things come to a head in the aptly named “The Cavalry Has Arrived,” which serves as an emotional swansong for our titular troupe of outcast clones.

The Zillo Beasts Returns and Tech Doesn’t

All roads lead to Mount Tantiss, and following last week’s cliffhanger ending, Crosshair, Hunter, and Wrecker (all voiced by Dee Bradley Baker) launch a rescue mission alongside former Imperial Vice Admiral Rampart (Noshir Dalal). Meanwhile, Echo (Baker) finds himself inside the base and working with Dr. Emerie Karr (Keisha Castle-Hughes), who’s had a change of heart.

Everything ties back to Project Necromancer, which is the Empire’s plan to clone Emperor Sheev Palpatine ahead of his impending death in Return of the Jedi . At the core of this is Omega (Michelle Ang), who is planning her own daring escape from Tantiss’ vault with the other M-count rich test subjects. It doesn’t set them up for their own spinoff, but we can imagine a more mature Young Jedi Adventures .

Going full Jurassic Park , Omega and her crew of escapees free the giant Zillo Beast, making its welcome return from Star Wars: The Clone Wars and earlier in The Bad Batch . Although the Zillo Beast runs amok on Tantiss Base, we were wrong that villainous Dr. Hemlock (Jimmi Simpson) would meet his maker at its jaws.

Hunter, Wrecker, and Crosshair are detained by Hemlock, who prepares the Bad Batch for reconditioning. While we know this didn’t work on Crosshair, Hemlock activating his CX assassins makes it clear that not all the clones were as lucky. Unfortunately, after weeks of speculation that CX-2 was a brainwashed version of their fallen brother, there was no shocking reveal that the clone assassin is actually Tech. Instead, Hunter easily dispatches CX-2 with a spear to the chest.

Speaking of underwhelming farewells, there’s plenty of fan fury that Delta Squad’s Scorch was gunned down like a common droid. These aren’t the only deaths, and when the seemingly reformed Rampart betrays our heroes to get back in good with the Empire, Nala Se (Gwendoline Yeo) takes him out in a fiery sacrifice.

With the Empire’s forces dwindling, Hemlock tries to escape with Omega but is stopped by Hunter and Crosshair in a final showdown. Despite Crosshair’s shakes, he takes out Hemlock in a hail of bullets. The Project Necromancer research is destroyed, and so is the Emperor’s knowledge of how important Omega could be to his cause…for now.

Things end with a last-minute cameo from Governor Tarkin (Stephen Stanton), who says that Hemlock has already wasted enough of the Empire’s money. The Necromancer funding is redistributed to Project Stardust, which, following Andor ’s post-credit scene , is the second recent Star Wars series to mention the construction of the Death Star.

Where Does The Bad Batch Leave the Team?

Despite some ominous opening titles, the remaining members of the Bad Batch scrape through with their lives and seemingly get one of those rare happy endings in Star Wars . The team regroups on Pabu and looks toward a brighter future.

Echo and Emerie are off to Pantora to help Senator Chuchi settle the former clones into their new lives while Omega and the rest of the Tantiss kids make a new home on Pabu. With Crosshair, Hunter, and Wrecker staying here while Echo dashes off on another adventure, it’s sad to see the Bad Batch split once again

Then again, after waving goodbye to Tech in the season 2 finale, Crosshair’s finale musings that Clone Force 99 died with him ring true. There’s an emotional mention of the group being able to choose their own path, leading to a skip into the future around 20 years after the Bad Batch parted ways. It’s here that we catch up with a much older Omega and Hunter by the Marauder 2.0.

The end of The Bad Batch ties neatly into the original trilogy, with Omerga wanting to fight for the Rebel Alliance as a hotshot pilot. As Omega flies off into the distance with Gonky, Tech’s smashed glasses make one last appearance before the final credits roll. It shows just how far the little clone has come and what she’s learned from her brothers.

Will There Be a Bad Batch Season 4 or Another Spinoff?

Despite there being no word on an official Bad Batch continuation or any rumbles of another animated series being in the works, there are more opportunities here than clones themselves. In particular, it feels like Echo’s arc is leading toward a clone uprising series that could bring in Captain Rex and pick up with the fan-favorite Domino Squad.

As for Omega, her lack of appearances beyond this point in the timeline had many worried The Bad Batch finale was going to go full Rogue One and kill them all. Given Omega’s ambitions to join the Rebel Alliance, we’re guessing she’ll appear further down the line in either animated or live-action form, and much like Rebels ’ Ghost appearing in Episode IX , Omega might’ve been with us this entire time.

We know Project Necromancer will eventually pick up steam in the New Republic timeline of The Mandalorian season 3, but with this coming after the destruction of both Death Stars and the deaths of Tarkin and Palpatine, it’s over to the Shadow Council and Commandant Brendol Hux (Brian Gleeson) to revisit it much further down the line.

There are just too many tantalizing plot threads to leave the story here, although what form the Bad Batch continues in remains unclear. We’re still no closer to finding out whether that’s Captain Rex in Return of the Jedi , there’s no last-minute appearance of Asajj Ventress to cue her franchise future, and there’s now a rogue Zillo Beast out there in the stars. Still, The Bad Batch ends on a poignant high that finally lets those ‘defective’ clones enjoy a well-earned break.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch is streaming now on Disney+.

10 Things We Want From Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3

Walter koenig interview: star trek the original series & the 7th rule podcast, 8 star trek: discovery things to know before season 5.

  • Star Trek fans have a lot to look forward to in 2024, with virtual and in-person conventions, Star Trek Day, podcasts, and new series announcements.
  • Despite uncertainties, the production of Star Trek: Section 31 and Lower Decks Season 5 are progressing smoothly.
  • The final season of Star Trek: Discovery is set to premiere in April 2024, marking the end of Captain Burnham's voyages.

Star Trek has a big 2024 on tap, and here are 8 things to look forward to from the final frontier this year. Although the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes halted Hollywood production and the ability of talent and creatives to promote their work for much of 2023, Star Trek had a phenomenal year. Star Trek: Picard season 3, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, and Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 released a cumulative 30 episodes, were highly acclaimed as some of the most innovative Star Trek in years, and many episodes charted in the Nielsen streaming Top 10. All in all, 2023 was a great year to be a Star Trek fan.

Significant questions loom over Star Trek in 2024, however. Paramount may be up for sale, which would certainly impact Star Trek on Paramount+'s various series and projects. There remains no new Star Trek theatrical movie in development, going on 8 years since Star Trek Beyond hit theaters in the summer of 2016. And there is no indication that Paramount+ will greenlight Star Trek: Picard 's proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy , in spite of the same type of dedicated fan campaign that helped Star Trek: Prodigy jump to Netflix after it was canceled by Paramount+. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes also delayed production of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, which likely won't premiere until 2025. Still, Star Trek has a massive 2024 planned , and here are 8 things for fans to be excited about.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is in production now, and hopefully the next 10 episodes will deliver on these storylines and plot threads.

8 Star Trek Has Amazing Podcasts

The 7th rule, the shuttlepod show, inglorious treksperts, the delta flyers, and more.

Star Trek has podcasts to satisfy every type of fan , and they're available to watch on YouTube or stream wherever you get your podcasts. Walter Koenig joins The 7th Rule with Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk to discuss his episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series. The Delta Flyers: Through The Wormhole added Terry Farrell and Armin Shimerman, who join Star Trek: Voyager 's Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill to review episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nin e. Inglorious Treksperts hosts Mark A. Altman and Daren Dochterman continue their unrivaled expertise of classic Star Trek with podcasts and live panel shows. Sadly, The Shuttlepod Show 's co-host Dominic Keating has left the podcast, but hosts and producers Connor Trinneer, Erica LaRose, and Mark J. Cartier will continue to dive deep into the lives and careers of their illustrious Star Trek guests. Star Trek fans have a wealth of podcasts to enjoy in 2024, with new episodes weekly.

Screen Rant interviews Walter Koenig about his joining The 7th Rule podcast to review Star Trek: The Original Series, his Trek memories, and more.

7 Star Trek Virtual & In-Person Conventions

Trektalks, virtual trek con 5, the llapy awards, stlv, and more.

Star Trek has a connection to its fans unlike any other in entertainment, and thanks to the various Star Trek conventions, both virtual and in-person, Star Trek fans have the privilege and ability to meet and hear from their favorite talent and creatives. Star Trek essentially pioneered the fan convention and 2024 kicks off with two huge virtual events: TrekTalks 3 , hosted by John Billingsley of Star Trek: Enterprise and Bonnie Gordon of Star Trek: Prodigy, streams live on YouTube on January 13th with a full day of panels featuring over 30 Star Trek guests, all to benefit the Hollywood Food Coalition. TrekTalks 3 will also feature a can't-miss Star Trek: Picard season 3 panel.

Virtual Trek Con 5 , from Cirroc Lofton of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Ryan T. Husk, and The 7th Rule podcast, streams on YouTube from February 15-19 with 4 days of Star Trek panels with numerous special guests. VTC5 is capped off by the 3rd annual LLAPy Awards , the only Star Trek awards show voted on by fans , which streams live on YouTube on Sunday, February 19. For in-person Star Trek cons, two of the biggest are Creation Entertainments ST:SF in San Francisco in March and STLV: Trek to Vegas in Las Vegas in August, both featuring dozens of Star Trek talent. And, with no strikes this year, Star Trek on Paramount+ will no doubt return once again with huge panels at San Diego Comic-Con in July and New York Comic-Con in October.

6 Star Trek Day 2024

Star trek celebrates the franchise in person again.

2023 sadly saw Paramount+'s annual in-person Star Trek Day event canceled because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Since 2021, Star Trek Day has been a celebration of the franchise bringing together talent and creatives from Star Trek on Paramount+'s series and Star Trek 's legacy shows and films. Held at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles and streamed on Paramount+ and Star Trek 's social channels, Star Trek Day is expected to return in September 2024, with a likely agenda of honoring the departing Star Trek: Discovery and looking ahead to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 and more.

Screen Rant was on the red carpet for Star Trek Day 2022 .

5 Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Announcements

Expect information about the newest star trek series.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was announced by Paramount+ in April 2023, and nothing more is known about the newest upcoming Star Trek series besides the fact that Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau ( Nancy Drew ) are the showrunners, and the writers' room includes Tawny Newsome of Star Trek: Lower Decks . 2024 should finally see more information about Starfleet Academy, which will hopefully announce the actors/characters of the show, and perhaps even confirm that Starfleet Academy is set after Star Trek: Discovery season 5 , as expected.

4 Star Trek: Section 31

Star trek's first made-for-streaming movie..

Announced in April 2023, Star Trek: Section 31 finally begins production from January to March in Toronto for a possible release in late 2024. Section 31 stars Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh , who reprises her Star Trek: Discovery anti-hero, Emperor Michelle Georgiou, and Yeoh used her clout from her Best Actress Oscar to ensure Section 31 is made. Star Trek: Section 31 is directed by Olutande Osunsanmi and written by Craig Sweeny, but nothing else is known about the first Star Trek movie made exclusively to stream on Paramount+ . Section 31 's potential success could lead to the plan for a new Star Trek streaming movie every 2 years to come to fruition. Even if Star Trek: Section 31 doesn't premiere in 2024, fans should at least finally learn what other characters are in the movie and what era of Star Trek Section 31 is set in.

3 Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5

Premieres in 2024 on paramount+..

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 may have been the animated comedy's best season yet, and hopes are high that Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will top it. The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes didn't affect the production of the animated series, and Star Trek: Lower Decks was able to complete its scripts, with 10 new episodes in production for the show's traditional late summer/early fall release date on Paramount+. Little is known about the stories planned for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 and the newly-minuted junior Lieutenants of the USS Cerritos, except that there will be more exploration of the Orion culture through the eyes of former Lt. D'Vana Tendi (Noel Wells). And while there are fears that season 5 could be the last for Star Trek: Lower Decks, hopefully, the 2023 crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds created more fans of Lower Decks, and creator Mike McMahan's hilarious animated show can continue for years to come.

2 Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - The Final Season

Premieres april 2024 on paramount+..

The only live-action Star Trek series on Paramount+'s 2024 schedule, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the final season marking the end of the voyages of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery. It was Star Trek: Discovery' s success on CBS All-Access, which became Paramount+, that led to Star Trek 's current TV renaissance. Although Discovery season 5 was not originally planned as the final season, following Paramount+ canceling the series in March 2023, reshoots were completed to turn Discovery 's season 5 finale into a proper ending for the entire series . Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is also a shift in tone to an Indiana Jones -like intergalactic treasure hunt adventure, according to Jonathan Frakes, who directs the penultimate episode of Discovery . Premiering in April 2024, Star Trek: Discovery will be the Star Trek event on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery returns for season 5 in 2024 after a 2-year hiatus, and here's what you need to know about Captain Burnham's final adventures.

1 Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

Premieres in 2024 on netflix.

With a huge global audience discovering the all-ages animated series on Netflix, Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 is possibly the most anticipated Star Trek event of 2024 . Netflix premiered Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 on Christmas Day, priming viewers new and old for 20 all-new Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 episodes from creators and showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman and their team. Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 promises to go even bigger than season 1's high stakes, taking Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the young ragtag former crew of the USS Protostar into an alternate 25th-century future and beyond. Star Trek: Prodigy season 2's massive scope will reportedly touch upon the entire Star Trek franchise, and the already-announced new castmember The Doctor (Robert Picardo) as well as the new USS Voyager-A are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the surprises, fun, and adventure Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 has in store.

Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks are streaming on Paramount+. Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on Netflix.

Alex Kurtzman Says There’s An Infinite Number Of Star Trek Stories To Tell, But New Shows Must Be “Authentic”

The state of Star Trek TV has been rapidly evolving since returning to the small screen with the first season of Discovery in 2017. Several live-action and animated Trek series have launched since then, and some have (or will soon) come to an end. In that context, the man who has overseen it all is commenting on that history and how he approaches what’s next.

Kurtzman: fans demand authenticity

Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman was the guest on the latest episode of The Ready Room , which mostly focused on the evolution of Star Trek: Discovery over the last five seasons as well as some of what it takes to make the show behind the scenes. The interview ended with host Wil Wheaton asking Kurtzman to reflect on the legacy of Discovery and how it spawned the Paramount+ Star Trek Universe of shows. The producer replied:

“It’s such an incredible gift because the truth is that when we started Discovery , I wasn’t thinking about that. I was just thinking about making a great show. And I fell so deeply in love with Discovery and with the process of making it. And I spent a lot of time that first season really kind of meditating on this incredible universe that has been around for so long, and how much more can be done with it. How many amazing stories are to tell. There’s really an infinite number of stories to tell.”

Kurtzman then detailed how he approaches creating new Star Trek projects:

“I only want to make another Star Trek show if there’s something special to say. I don’t want to do it just to do more. I think that would be a huge disservice to Star Trek. It would be a huge disservice to the fans. I think the fans would feel it instantaneously. They would know this is not authentic because if there’s one thing that Trek fans know, it’s authenticity. So for me, it’s really just about figuring out a way to make sure that we take our time,  we’re deliberate, we’re thoughtful, and we deliver on the promise of something different every time.”

Season 2 publicity photo for Strange New Worlds

We do have a picture of what’s coming in the shorter term after Discovery wraps up later this month. The Star Trek: Section 31 streaming movie starring Michelle Yeoh has already completed filming, but no release date has yet been set. The third season of Strange New Worlds is currently filming, and that will arrive next year. A fourth season has already been ordered. Paramount+ has also recently decided the upcoming fifth season of the animated adult comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks (due this fall) will be the last. The animated series  Star Trek: Prodigy has moved from Paramount+ to Netflix, with the already completed season 2 expected sometime this year and no decision yet on if they will commission more. Finally, the YA-focused Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series is set to start filming later this summer, but that may not arrive until 2026.

So even compared to the streaming wars peak of a couple of years ago, there is still a significant amount of Star Trek TV lined up for the next couple of years. And Kurtzman has been teasing there are more “ surprises ” to come. Of course, fans are already weighing on that future including an effort to save Star Trek Lower Decks , and calls for Terry Matalas’ Star Trek: Legacy followup to Picard to get the green light, something Kurtzman recently said was out of his hands . Adding to all the uncertainty is the fate of Paramount+ which is in flux due to corporate drama at Paramount Global . May we live in interesting times…

‘Starfleet Academy’ May Not Arrive Until 2026; Alex Kurtzman Talks Bringing In New Star Trek Fans

I like most of what Kurtzman has given us, though Discovery has largely been a disaster. But Starfleet Academy just sounds bad. I hope to be proven wrong.

I agree, all new Trek shows were good to great, except Discovery which somehow keeps getting worse. I’m OK with Academy show, as long as Michelle Paradise and her crew of writers stay away from it.

I think the writers need to read “The Making of Star Trek” by Stephen E. Whitfield. Because they do things that stretch credulity in its own context. Example, that stupid cone of silence over Michael’s head.

I’ve been a Trek fans since the 1970s, and Discovery is my favorite Trek out of all of them. I don’t think it’s a disaster at all. I’m looking forward to seeing both the Section 31 movie and the Academy show.

Agreed. Discovery seems like a long, drawn out therapy session while trying to save the universe, yet again, from an unknown, never before seen, mysterious force.

Discovery still feels awful to me and it just doesn’t pull me in with all the issues it has. And the lack of discussion about it this season seems to suggest even fewer people are watching it now.

Zero interest in the Academy show as well.

I am however truly loving Prodigy though. That’s really fun and inviting and oddly enough there is less crying on that show than there is on Discovery and they are all kids lol.

I’m pretty convinced a lot less people are watching it this season as well I think I had this conversation with you somewhere but the lack of any reports, official or otherwise, on views anywhere is also very telling.

Meanwhile Paramount had no problems reporting the show Knuckles from the Sonic the Hedgehog movies was the most viewed original show on that site EVER!!! A show that premiered less than two weeks ago. That means it got more views not just than Star Trek shows but also all the Taylor Sheridan shows. That’s insane lol.

We can spin stuff until the cows come home but if Discovery was getting strong views right now we would be hearing about it.

The complete silence followed by the noticable drops in discussion about it probably makes clear it’s not going out as a big hitter in its final season as Paramount probably hoped.

But so happy you are loving Prodigy! 😀

Absolutely. We’ve only just scratched the surface.

Here are shows I’d like to see:

* following people traveling in space in a profession other than Starfleet: artists, actors, musicians, journalists, politicians, doctors, etc. * a show similar to TNG’s “First Contact,” in which a planet learns about the existence of aliens and that the UFP exists. * a show that takes place in the 2160s, as the UFP is just being formed, the people forming the government hire historian(s) to consult on the project, which allows that story to parallel with the unification of Earth after First Contact, in both timelines, we see the effects of the decisions made by the new government on the general public. ENT or First Contact characters could be in it. * an Earth-based series at any point in Trek history. * a show set on a colony. * West Wing: Rom

I’d also be interested in spinoffs such as:

* Wesley and Kore as Travelers * Rios, Teresa, Ricardo, and Guinan fighting for medical equality in the 2020s. * Jurati’s adventures over the course of the 400 years where she crafts her own version of the Borg collective while staying out of history’s way, waiting to emerge and reintegrate with the rest of the galaxy. * Literally anyone on La Sirena, working for the Fenris Rangers, similar to the fanfilm series Star Trek: Aurora. I suppose Worf and Elnor are free agents and have familiarity with the ship. If it’s the two of them, it could be a way for Worf to come to terms with his previous hate for Romulans, through training Elnor. I would have originally preferred Seven and Raffi, but they appear to be occupied with the Enterprise. * a show about Book’s relief efforts after the DMA attacks. * a show or miniseries that ties up the loose ends from “Calypso.” My theory is that, if “Calypso” wasn’t one of Zora’s dreams, the Discovery’s jump duplicated the ship, and that copy has been dormant and adrift up until the time when our Discovery emerged.

I actually like most of these! 🙂

Several more show suggestions: A Trek medical show, Fenris Rangers show and The Adventures of Captain Shaw.

Absolutely awful suggestions there.

A Wesley and kora show has to be the worst idea ever!

Wes yes, Kora no – terrible character and not great acting either

Yeah wasn’t a big fan of Kora either but sadly like so much of season 2 how she was developed was lacking to say the least.

Yeah yeah JUST GIVE US THE LEGACY SHOW ALREADY PARAMOUNT!!!!

But we know this studio has less money for Star Trek these days. He can flower it up as much as possible but when four out of your five shows are cancelled, the last three in one year alone, things aren’t humming along as he’s trying to make it out to be. And let this sink in, four shows gone, but only one official replacement so far.

i suspect we won’t even hear about another show, Legacy or otherwise, until whoever the new overlords of the studio will be and they can just chuck it if the franchise isn’t pulling enough of its own weight.

There are plenty of Trekkies like myself who are not thrilled by the idea of Legacy.

I don’t need to keep seeing sequels to characters from 30 years ago. And more of the same, rather than something truly different and new, is not exciting to me.

I liked the idea of a Seven/Fenris Rangers show. But Seven, Captain of the Enterprise? Meh.

As much as Picard seasons 1-2 weren’t all that great, and often bad, I appreciate that they tried something different than just a sequel to TNG.

Personally I like when decades-old franchises take risks and those “big swings” that so many banal Trekkies hate.

If we got all the stuff fans are asking for you’d all hate it, and it would almost certainly be terrible.

Hey that’s cool… but I really really want it personally!

And I have no problem if they tried other things, it’s why I love both LDS and PRO. I was super excited about the first two seasons about Picard as well. It’s not because it was different I didn’t like it. I didn’t like it because it was bad… really bad. 🙄

And I have faith if Matalas made it. Sure can still be bad but I trust him much more over others.

Very much agree dear!

I still very much want Legacy but Star Trek seems to be greatly slowing down these days. Although I never watched it even I was a bit surprised LDS got cancelled because fans seem to really like it. There is way more outcry over its cancellation than there was for Discovery’s.

Sadly the problem seems to be none of these new shows are attracting new fans like the older shows did. Even my long time Trek friends only seen a few of the new shows. For so many to be cancelled is telling. I remember the big shock when Enterprise got cancelled. It felt like such a big deal. Now it’s feeling very common unfortunately.

All true. I think a lot of things are currently in an impasse right now. Star Trek isn’t going anywhere but same time I don’t know if it’s going to be the leading franchise either like it originally was through 2021 at least.

This year could sadly be the most Trek we will ever have going forward now that Discovery, Prodigy and LDS are having their swan songs and SNW will probably be the only new Trek in 2025 unless they push to get SFA up and running by then.

I still think the Legacy show will ultimately happen but as said probably not until Paramount gets a new buyer and they decide the level of commitment they want to make to the franchise.

As far as Enterprise I’m still convinced way more people watched that show in its last season than any season of Discovery.

But yeah things are very different today

Someday I hope somebody does a book, article, or documentary about what really happened behind the scenes in developing Discovery. Why did Bryan Fuller get fired? Why did the show go through multiple showrunners in the first seasons?

We now have some of the historical perspective on why similar things happened in the beginning of TNG.

I am also curious about how big of an involvement (if any) Nick Meyer had at the beginning and development of Discovery.

I’m pretty sure he was a part of the writers room, and got some producing credit.I believe he had some strong input in the first two episodes on the Shenzou, and key story points of his survived into the finished product. When Fuller was ousted, he was sidelined if not outright removed as well. He showed up at a couple of conventions or something to help promote it, so it wasn’t completely negative. As I recall, he was pretty business like about it… not bent out of shape, but he was honest about it.

I think we know some of the issues.. I think the big one was Fuller having another show in development, and having divided interests. I don’t think that’s the only reason, though and it’ll be interesting to hear some detail on that.

Yeah I would be very curious about what happened with Fuller and how that impacted the development of the series. Some things I think we know came from him, the visual changes to things like Klingons and ship design stuff, unless I’m misremembering.

Also IIRC the showrunners after fuller got fired because of going over budget on season two premiere and being terrible and yelling at the writers?

I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s eventually a third volume to the 50 Year Mission behind-the-scenes duology covering 2009-2034. I suppose the title “50 Year Mission” wouldn’t quite work anymore though haha.

Yes, exactly. There are infinite stories. Which is why it’s so frustrating that nearly all of the Kurtzman era has been built upon hamfisted references, callbacks, and legacy characters, and relied on fans emotion connection to those to get them invested in a weak story and weak characters.

It makes sense in the context of Picard and to some extent Lower Decks but why is Discovery taking a trip down memory lane with those memories aren’t their own?

I don’t care about Legacy, but I would like to see a Lagasse series.

I think Star Trek has lost its way. What made it special and unique is gone. The allegorical story telling, the positive vision of the future, the mix of science and exploration. I have no interest in Section 31, nor in a Starfleet Academy show.

Like a lot of fans, I enjoyed Picard Season 3. But this seems to have been a flash in the pan.

I agree about losing its way. Just the other day I realized that the exploration aspect has largely disappeared. Star Trek crews still discover, but usually because they are thrown at it, not because they ventured out to get to see new challenging things to be fascinated. It would be fun again to see a crew that has a sense of wonder, discovering something that nobody has seen before, something scientific. SNW comes close to that, but I think every ST show should spearhead that idea. Remember all the astro-or other phenomenons that came up during TNG that posed a moral or otherwise challenging dilemma for characters? Maybe an academy show is the best vehicle to get back to that again.

Kurtzman is all about making Star Trek accessible to a new generation of viewers. Do some more Sci along with the Fi.

TOS used real science fiction writers, but that is probably considered too expensive nowadays, so we get a small room full of cut-rate clowns and you get what you pay for showing up in the quality of the shows. This really sad, especially when you only get 10 episodes instead of 30.

Like all modern, serialized stories today, it’s more character than plot driven.. more like a soap opera than sci-fi. Even with the episodes I like, I find the rewatchability factor to be low. That’s because of two things. The characters aren’t that interesting, and there is a central conceit each season, that once revealed, makes these season long arcs not very interesting either. Without that desire to discover the season’s mysteries… there really is very little there.

There isn’t even much to the main character since they decided to make her perfect in all things. There’s really no struggle, hardship, or failings for the character to endure and overcome to keep the audience invested in her journey from mutineer to the greatest captain of all time. Those two points in her life should have been the bookends for the entire series. The idea of her character was compelling, but they really messed up with her development.

They fabricate conflict and imperfection to blatantly show how great she is at rising above. No subtlety or nuance. I hate it.

I agree with this. I just rewatched Discovery seasons 1-4 in preparation for season 5. I was ok, I guess, with how they handled the season premise, but I didn’t buy the premise. Season 1 (Klingon war and Spock’s sister we’ve never heard of), season 2 (red angel), season 3 (the burn – was actually ok until we got to the solution) and season 4 (giant aliens beyond the barrier and rogue Book). Didn’t like the premise. I’ll admit I’m actually enjoying season 5, and I think it’s because I like the premise, I always thought “The Chase” deserved a follow up.

100%. Although I thought species 10-C were a cool idea. But it’s not an original one. Not sure if if was Arthur C Clarke, or Carl Sagan or someone else that theorized those type of creatures initially as possible inhabitants of the gas clouds of Jupiter.. but they lacked sentience. Trek gave them that for this story. I kind of liked where they ended up, even though I didn’t like how they got there, if that makes sense. Season long arcs are tough because the idea at the end needs to be big enough to match your imagination. It hasn’t ever been on modern Trek for me.

Clarke wrote it in the 2010 novel (not sure if it was totally his idea, but that’s where I first came across it)

Watching a TOS episode and Berman-era episode back-to-back is jarring, but the biggest similarities were the professionalism and intelligence of the crew. We were watching smart people doing smart things in weird situations. However, the Kurtzman-era Trek does not display this. They “say” they are smart, but it they are pretending. And professionalism is out the door. I agree that Picard Season 3 had that in spades, but it was, as you said, a “flash in the pan.”

I think the important bit you mention here is “they say”. This is exactly true, characters seem to act according to other characters. I mean do you really need that much praise for basically just doing your job. Yes, its good to get the occasional praise or pat in the back, but to constantly praise or be emotional about something that is basically your job seems a bit childish to me honestly. This is why I appreciated characters like Shaw or Jellico, sometimes you gotta stop with the bs and just get the job done. We knew Kirk, Spock and Bones were best of friends, but we never saw and didn’t need to see them complementing each other all the time on the bridge or saying how much they love each other. It was obvious they loved each other, it was seen through their actions, we didn’t need to constantly hear it mentioned or like you say the characters didn’t need to say it. Saying something too much doesn’t make it happen, in fact the opposite it cheapens the intended emotion or effect.

I remember sitting with my friends watching a talk show and most the guests were gushing with complements for each other, and we started laughing and one of my friends said, “No one here would ever act like that, what a bunch of phonies.”

You nailed it, James. Good post.

I couldn’t agree more.

Agreed! The absence of allegorical science fiction and believable characters was a deal breaker for me too. And I’ve had to accept that the Star Trek I fell in love with no longer exists. But, if people like Disco and SNW, or want to watch S31 and SFA, that’s cool. It’s not for me. It’s not my canon. But, I do love LDS/Prodigy.

I wouldn’t say it lost it’s way moreso the mandate had slightly changed.

Again you could really see that in the early days of both Discovery and Picard. It was feeling less like a show of exploration and ideas and more one of character driven stories and big villains. It all felt too dark and not enough optimism and yeah, discovery.

There was a big debate a few months back when some people thought Discovery was a better show in its first two seasons than now. On one hand I kind of understood that argument but on the other completely disagreed with it because the show just felt too far away from what gave Star Trek it’s heart. I’m not talking about how visually jarring it felt or way too advanced for it’s time period, it just didn’t feel like Star Trek enough. It was trying to feel like a more contemporary show which I understood but it just missed the mark of what Star Trek was. It was spending waaay too much time trying to be edgy instead of intriguing or engaging.

Now season 2 was certainly better and it’s clear they listened to the complaints but the show still relied too much on on it feeling dark and big villains like Control. There was still a lack of exploration a show literally named Discovery should have.

But yeah I do feel TPTB at the time felt Trek as a franchise just felt out of step with show’s today. It can’t be more TOS, TNG or ENT, it has to be more dark and serialized to grab people today. Even other fans thought you can’t do that anymore. It has to be more like Lost or GOT. And yeah it had very mixed results to say the least.

But I do feel we have more of the Trek of old again. Yes maybe not as strong as it should be but certainly an improvement over the first few years and I mean all the new shows not just Discovery.

And I always wonder even if people feel these things could be stronger overall I personally feel LDS, PRO and definitely SNW is doing that. Yes can all be better but they all inherently feel like Star Trek of old to me.

“I only want to make another Star Trek show if there’s something special to say. I don’t want to do it just to do more. I think that would be a huge disservice to Star Trek.”

Sounds like he’s directly referencing Legacy, which basically is just “more”.

Kurtzman would have been better off saying nothing. It’s laughable just how clueless this braintrust is.

But it isn’t laughable how TPTB keep writing him checks and letting him soil the playing field.

He’s a producer.. saying producer things. He gets the checks because he delivers content on time and within budget.. not because he keeps the fanbase happy. If they’re making money, he’ll be retained.

Yes, exactly Heyberto.

I say the same thing about Trek fans on Internet forums like this every day. Including right now.

The problem is he didn’t really say anything anyway. I’m not even sure what was the point of bringing him on other than to say “We’ll make more shows when we can.” That was the gist. And we all know he has very little control of that since he admitted before green lighting Legacy is out of his hands.

if Tilly is not in Starfleet Academy I will watch, if she is in it this may be the first live action show i pass on, she is insufferable

My god just give us a series set in the TOS Movie Era! It’s all I ever wanted.

They’re not going to do that, because it makes total sense. The whole period between the TOS movie era and TNG has been blatantly ignored.

It makes sense, despite the vast majority of fans saying they should stay away from sequels.

Look, you’re better off saying nothing, it’s incredible how clueless you are, to quote another commenter.

Paine’s comment makes total sense, and as usual, is far from clueless. To your comment, I’d say it doesn’t have to be a sequel to what we’ve seen, just stories told in that era with that look and maybe even that sensibility.

Many thanks, Kmart.

I actually got a good chuckle out of this, thanks.

It is interesting to see where they choose to mine the past, and where they don’t. BUT… it seems you may get your wish with when the Section 31 movie is set. For me, I’m much more interested in eras that aren’t directly tied to the past. The reason I wanted SNW was because of how they got Captain Pike right in Disco S2, and I thought they’d be focused on exploration and new adventures. But I’d much rather seem them push forward as opposed to filling gaps.

Yes its a big gap 75 years if I’m correct

if you wanted to do the prime Enterprise crew, then a serious (not Lower Decks….) animated series would be the way to go. Honestly, the animation is probably the thing to do regardless; it would let you keep the TMP aesthetic without it feeling wildly outdated in live-action. Same for the TNG era – could revisit TNG post-Nemesis but pre-Picard – or a cell-shaded Titan show (adapt the novels!) would be great

I liked it when the ship was also a main character we cared about. TOS and TNG got this. Leonard Nimoy understood one of the Star Trek Formulas. The show’s formula involved using the ship’s technology and the crew’s skills to solve the dilemmas creatively. That’s why TWOK worked so well, although it cost Spock his life. Technology, Vulcan mysticism and the crew’s sacrifice eventually saved him. We need HEROS along with mirrors. We want to see ourselves in the crew and what we all wish we could aspire to be. Strong female characters are important. It does a disservice to them when male characters get emasculated to make the female crew look competent. This is OBVIOUS in DSC. As a father of a daughter and grandfather of a toddler, I want them to see that they can be whoever they aspire to be. I wonder who my 1-year-old Grandson would look up to if he gets interested in Star Trek. Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, understands this. All the male and female characters are fleshed out; they have their strengths and flaws. I think that’s why it’s a juggernaut. I rewatch Yellowstone more than I do DSC. To be clear, I wake up every Thursday at 3:00 AM to watch the latest DSC episode. I’m a fan of it. We need some of the main characters to have a shorthand with each other: A glance, a word or a shrug. Case in point: Pike was caught flat-footed in the S2 cliffhanger. It should have been Una: “Orders, Captain?” Pike and Una glance at each other, and she and Pike know what he must do. It’s unspoken. Una does not need to repeat herself: “Orders, Captain?” We should have seen Pike turn to give the impossible order and… “TO BE CONTINUED…” Leaving him there frozen doesn’t make sense and denigrates his character. SFA is strictly a vehicle to bring the coveted younger college demographic into the show. I applaud it. I’ll watch it to support the franchise A lot of us watched TNG through our college years. I keep my Par+ sub active all year long and tell Par+ why. Trek is expensive to produce, and I understand that. But when they see a one—or two-month sub, they binge Trek? It’s hard, business-wise, to justify keeping any expensive show in production. I also have friends who work on the various Trek shows.

The other thing about the Enterprise as a ship we cared about.. it helped that we had so much time with it.. that we were ourselves endeared to it much as Kirk was. His reverence for it was passed on to us, and that was cool. The problem with destroying it in the Kelvin movies was, we never felt that Kelvin Kirk gave a crap about it. There was one little pause in his voice as he gave the command to abandon ship in ST:Beyond. Certainly the creatives behind it took it on faith that it would mean something to the audience, but it really didn’t. Watching that ship descend into the atmosphere over that great Giachinno score meant nothing to me. It rang hollow.

“ A lot of us watched TNG through our college years.” – and yet there was nary a college or anything really related to anything like that, yet it still drew you in with good cast and good stories. No gimmicky pandering…fancy that.

I’m upset that they canceled Lower Decks…maybe Netflix will get it like Prodigy (assuming we ever see that…if only I was in France!). Section 31 doesn’t sound super interesting to me. Starfleet Academy in the 32nd century is definitely not for me. If I was gonna see a Starfleet Academy show I’d want it to be about characters I care about, like a young Kirk or Picard or something like that.

I’ve enjoyed Strange New Worlds though…it’s been great…Disco not so much, and even this new season, which might be one of the better ones, lacks much depth…but him saying that Star Trek needs to be authentic just kind of urks me for some reason. Mostly because so far all of the authentic Treks have been getting canceled. I mean Prodigy and Lower Decks by the way. Despite being animated they have been the best. And of course although I did enjoy Picard, it’s over as well. Honestly I don’t have much interest in Legacy assuming it’s gonna be about Seven of Nine and Captain Picard Jr. I have no interest in that…I’d rather see a Q comedy series…I’m serious…that actually might be good. And if it’s section 31 I’d want Sloan in it. We’ll see…I hope they don’t dissapoint.

Aviod any space cadet shows at all cost.

There are indeed an infinite number of stories to tell. This is why it’s baffling as to why they take 10 episodes to tell a story that should only take 2 hours.

Flaming dumpster fires.

Not even 1st season next gen got this much toxic heat.

Just kill star trek for 10 years, then bring it back when people have buried this pdst era in the past.

For the love of god, execs, don’t do this.

Strangely enough, the new season of Discovery feels like a 25th century show, mostly because it nicely uses Berman Era canon so seamlessly. I no longer feel the urgent need for a Legacy show if they write more like this for all shows. I’m just not into TOS stuff nearly much because the universe seems so much more confined, but the more campy energy of TOS Star Trek suits SNW so well and it’s way more accessible and charismatic.

Discovery had a pretty terrible start, an under-developed ensemble cast and a premise that caused huge conflicts with storytelling. I don’t think they were ever able to fix it unfortunately, but I still enjoy it all the same. I don’t blame Kurtzman for that, although the terrible bungling of the Picard S1 and S2 is on his shoulders, but I know it’s REALLY hard to make this stuff, especially with all the compromises that came with pulling off the show and convincing the talent to participate. But we got some incredible stuff, like Lower Decks, Prodigy, Picard S3, and SNW. I’m looking forward to more, still a pretty packed outlook. And I’m thankful for what we’ve had, really is a blessing for a long starving Star Trek fan.

My only request, PLEASE fix the microphones and audio mixing for the Toronto shows! Some of the worst onset audio I’ve ever heard for any show.

They really seemed to study Picard S3 for how to do fan service while telling a new story. other problems still exist, but I have to give credit for them dialing back, and using it more subtly and in a more organic way. Doesn’t feel like they’re getting too cute with it. They picked a good TNG episode to follow up on as well.

I give credit where credit is due and it looks like they finally learned to make it closer to what Picard season 3 did and tie the show closer to canon and fan service but still can still tell an intriguing new story.

I don’t think the season has been amazing so far so far but it’s at least been decent. That’s high praise for Discovery! 😂

Wow you literally just said everything I feel as well! 😀

As someone who has thought Discovery has been downright awful every season so far, I am truly enjoying this season more and I think a big part of that is just how well they been connecting it to old school canon. It was a great idea to tie it to a very popular TNG episode and expand that story. But I also like they brought the Breen back which was as exciting as Picard bringing the Changelings back.

And also love LDS, PRO and SNW. As for SNW like you I’m a much bigger 24th century fan, always will be because the universe feels much bigger and lived in. With the exception of the Romulans literally all my favorite species exists in the 24th century. And of course the Romulans can’t even show up very much pre TOS which is why prequels really really sick. 🙄

But SNW is making me enjoy that era more and feels like a more modern day TOS. It’s what I thought Discovery would be like but ironically nothing about it remotely felt like TOS to me. Nothing. It felt like it belonged in a completely different time period. So it was very jarring at first and glad they moved it.

And while SNW isn’t perfect either it does feel like it actually belongs there and just feel like classic Star Trek again. It’s tied with Enterprise for me.

It starts with great characters.

This interview feels different. Wheaton looks forcibly overjoyed. Kurtzman sounds completely burned out. Really hope better news come up in the upcoming months.

I don’t think Kurtzman has an inkling of a clue what good Star Trek is. These new shows and the awful reboot movies doesn’t spend much time on understanding the human condition. There is hardly any exploration done at least in the live action shows. There is no real gravitas like you got in the classic shows and people who felt like real adults and professionals. Everyone feels like college interns instead of adults making big decisions. It’s a big reason why I couldn’t take his movies very seriously either along with just more forgetful villains trying to take down the Federation for very vague reasons.

I have heard Discovery is better this season but I couldn’t get past the first episode. It still felt like the same melodrama and schlock where everyone is constantly discussing their feelings instead of focusing solely on the mission.

I don’t know if we’re ever going to get the Star Trek of the past where there was just more thoughtful and mature story telling and they tried to tackle complex issues more often. It doesn’t mean it was always success certainly but there was a real attempt.

I think Picard season 3 was the only time they got close to it and that was far from perfect as well.

Agree 100% with you, Legacy.

He talked a lot but said very little.

I don’t think anything new will be discussed or greenlit until Paramount is sold or merges with another company. And even then it’ll likely take a minute to get things approved and started, although announcements are easily done and are free so we might here about what’s coming well before we get it.

No mention of ST: Legacy but that’s not surprising. I think this’ll happen, once a sale is finalized. The fan desire is there and Picard Season 3 was very well received enough, both in terms of critical reception, viewing numbers and industry relevant awards. I only hope Matalas and Co. are available to head and staff the show, if it is greenlit. I know there are some who think this will simply be a rehash of previous Berman era Trek, but I think, for many, that points to a fundamental lack of understanding about what Picard season 3’s mission and overall goal was, and what Matalas has said in terms of his vision for St: Legacy, what it would be, and where it would go.

As for other Star Trek shows I’d like to see, something involving the federation after its founding could be interesting. I’d personally like to see more of an alternate history approach taken with this time period, something that mirrors Robert A. Heinlein’s future history. Robert A. Heinlein was a very popular science fiction writer from the late 1930’s to the mid 1980’s. I think a more rough and tumble star fleet, beset by growing pains, conflict, and ideology vs pragmatism could really illuminate the time and the journey of humans from Archer’s time to Kirk’s; a less sanitized and gleaming future where the federation and star fleet make some serious missteps and are very much learning how to move through their part of the galaxy, to say nothing of the inherent danger in space travel and exploration that would be heightened during this time. We could even see some diversity of space exploration agencies, some geared more toward profit and less concerned with any prime directive/general order one. Eventually these would disappear or be rolled into Starfleet, but before that occurs, seeing competing interests among human institutions could bear some fascinating fruit.

Given Discovery’s strong 5th season, I’m sorry to see it go, so maybe at some point we could meet up with most of these characters again, maybe in a miniseries or individual specials that then lead to a big event.

I think Star Trek has numerous stories to tell and as long as the fans show up we will continue to get new stories.

I just wish SNW had more episodes per season.

Sorry but to me Kurtzman said a whole lot of nothing. It just sounds like he was trying to excuse why there is becoming less and less shows.

This was sadly just more a puff piece. I know that’s all The Ready Room sadly is and why I haven’t watched hardly any of it this season. I honestly just fast forward to see next week’s clip and maybe if the segments dealing with past Star Trek history is interesting enough but that’s really it.

It would’ve been nice to discuss actual details and things like LDS cancellation (although this was probably shot before that but I doubt it would’ve been discussed regardless) or just something more about Section 31 or SFA. It’s strange there was more info in the Vanity Fair article a month ago than what we got here but whatever.

And I have been one of Kurtzman’s biggest supporters here. Picard and Discovery has been mixed to say the least but loved Picard season 3 and enjoying the last season of Discovery so far even if I haven’t loved all the episodes. I’m really hoping the show ends on a high note and it’s been more good than bad at least, so staying positive.

But I thought LDS, PRO and SNW were all great out of the gate. Just feeling more like classic Trek and the Berman era again. They all been fun shows with solid characters and generally good stories. I have some criticisms for all of them (actually none for Prodigy lol) but I recognize they are good Trek shows even with flaws.

But yes I obviously see the criticisms all these shows still has and that they are not focusing on bigger ideas and when they DO like honestly Discovery has tried every season it falls flat with more tedious melodrama and truly bad plotting and twists. And I do miss the gravitas of the old shows others pointed out. When I turn on an episode of TOS, TNG or even VOY you feel a real sense of officers and scientists at work. All the characters could be light and playful who joked around at appropriate times but there wasn’t a lot of holding hands and crying either. When there was a crisis everyone had their game face on.

But that was a different time obviously and I don’t think these new shows will ever surpass what we got on the past. But that’s solely my opinion of course and I’m happy if others do like this era more today.

And at the end of the day it’s not a competition. We all want more Star Trek and more importantly good Star Trek. I’m just not sure how much we will of either though the way things are going at Paramount these days but I will support whatever comes next regardless as I have always done.

For me Star Trek will always be the most important entertainment franchise out there. It is a little sad not many new or young people are into this franchise today but as long as it still thrives I’ll be watching at least.

New 'The Acolyte' trailer for May the 4th, plus 'Star Wars' movies, TV shows in the works

star trek movies coming out

For nearly 50 years, "Star Wars" fans have thrilled over the various chapters of the Skywalker Saga on the big screen. So where will we travel next in the galaxy far, far away? The next few months and years will go a long way to answering that question. (Hint: It will involve Baby Yoda, in case you miss that little guy.)

For decades, the movie theater was the primary home for the mega-popular franchise, but TV has become a hotbed of "Star Wars" stories in the streaming era. The Western-tinged adventures of "The Mandalorian" and politically savvy machinations in "Andor" have won over audiences in recent years, and new Disney+ series like "The Acolyte" are on the horizon. And while we haven't seen a "Star Wars" movie since "The Rise of Skywalker" in 2019 (the less we say about that, the better), high-profile films are in development, from Pedro Pascal's Mando and Grogu's biggest adventure yet to the return of Daisy Ridley's heroic Rey.

So what’s coming and when? Here’s everything we know that's in the "Star Wars" pipeline:

Star Wars Day: Celebrate May the 4th with these deals

'The Acolyte' gets a new trailer for May the 4th

With its latest Disney+ series, "Star Wars" is going back in time farther than ever onscreen: "The Acolyte," which debuted a new trailer for Star Wars Day and premieres its first two episodes June 4, explores the High Republic era, which takes place centuries before George Lucas' first prequel, "The Phantom Menace." Amandla Stenberg stars as a former Jedi apprentice, while Carrie-Anne Moss and "Squid Game" breakout Lee Jung-jae play Jedi masters in a mystery thriller set during a time when the dark side begins to disrupt the light side of the Force.

'The Phantom Menace' turns 25: Celebrate with our ultimate 'Star Wars' movie ranking

'Star Wars' meets 'The Goonies': Jude Law headlines youthful 'Skeleton Crew'

Created by Jon Watts (who directed Tom Holland's Marvel Spider-Man films), "Skeleton Crew" is a Spielbergian coming-of-age series that centers on four youngsters who make a mysterious discovery, find themselves lost in a strange galaxy and meet friends and enemies alike trying to find their way home. The show, like "The Mandalorian," is set in the New Republic era between "Return of the Jedi" and "The Force Awakens." Jude Law and Oscar nominee Kerry Condon ("The Banshees of Inisherin") star, and while "Skeleton Crew" was originally scheduled to premiere in 2023, it's expected later this year or early 2025.

A second season of acclaimed 'Andor' is on the way

"Andor," a gritty and realistic "Rogue One" prequel that won over fans and critics alike, reintroduced Rebel spy Cassian Andor as a young man recruited by members of the Resistance working against the fascistic Empire. Filming wrapped earlier this year on the 12-episode second and final season, which is expected to hit Disney+ in 2025: In a 2022 interview, creator Tony Gilroy explained that Andor goes from being "someone who could care less about the rebellion" in the first half of the show to "becoming a revolutionary" by its conclusion.

Also on tap: 'Ahsoka' Season 2 with Rosario Dawson

The first-season cliffhanger of "Ahsoka" left its main characters in quite a pickle, with lightsaber-wielding warrior Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and pal Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) stuck in a far-off galaxy while the returning Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) gathers the remnants of the Empire to be a thorn in the New Republic's side. The good news is that creator Dave Filoni is currently developing a second season to explore how our heroines get out of their jam.

Mandalorian and Grogu are ready for their big-screen closeup

There's no word yet on a potential fourth season of "The Mandalorian," but we're getting the next best thing: "The Mandalorian & Grogu" (due May 22, 2026), directed by Jon Favreau, begins filming this year and will feature Pascal's helmeted warrior dad and his powerfully adorable adopted son. It's likely not the last of them at the cinema, either: Filoni is developing an action-packed movie centered on a war between the Imperial Remnant and fledging New Republic that will close out the interconnected stories of Disney+ shows "Mandalorian," "The Book of Boba Fett" and "Ahsoka." "I hope you walk into that theater and whether you've seen a series or not, you enjoy the movie," the director told USA TODAY at last year's Star Wars Celebration.

James Mangold 'biblical epic,' Rey's big return are in the works, too

Daisy Ridley, who played the sequel trilogy's central heroine Rey, will reprise her role in a new film from director Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, an Oscar winner for best documentary short ("Saving Face"). The movie is set 15 years after "Rise of Skywalker," as Rey builds a New Jedi Order.

And after tackling the last Indiana Jones movie, director James Mangold is plumbing the ancient history of the "Star Wars" galaxy for another new film project in development. In an interview last year, Mangold described his tale of the first Jedi to harness the Force as a weapon of liberation in a good-vs.-evil fight as a "biblical epic" about the "dawning of the religion that drives 'Star Wars.'"
