2023 Ford Excursion: Ford hasn’t built a Super Duty Excursion SUV in years. But that hasn’t stopped many from wishing that were still the case. That’s why MegaRexx Trucks turned the F-250 into the new Excursion. And if you like it, you can buy one of these giant seven-seater SUVs.

An over-the-top truck is what one would expect from MegaRexx, of Castle Hayne, NC. He calls this extra-large three-row SUV “MegaRexx SVN.” We featured other trucks the company has built, such as the MegaRaptor and MegaBronc trucks. When it comes to a Ford pickup in a bed, it’s usually a MegaRexx creation.

First, MegaRexx made a long roof out of aluminum. Later it turned out that the F-250 bank became part of the cockpit. Easier said than done, we know. It blends in with other F-250s and it’s not just a fiberglass cover.

The long strip of stained glass windows in a spectacular presentation does not go unnoticed. Inside, the darkness continues with the Lariat Ultimate fully covered in leather. This and much more give the interior a very luxurious look. The first and second-row seats are equipped with individual power seats.

The rear seats use the third-row seats from the Ford Expedition. These are upholstered like the front and center row bucket seats. And third-row passengers get their own Vintage Air climate control system. With Lariat Ultimate trim, the front seats are heated and ventilated. A Ford Sync 4 infotainment system and a 10-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system are part of the package.

Presumably, like the booming SUV market in the United States, the Excursion appeals to those looking for a three-row heavy-duty vehicle. Arriving in the fall of 1999 as the ’00 model, the ‘Ex ditched the GM Suburban, boasting the longest (226-inch), widest (80-inch), and tallest (77-inch) SUV ever produced by any of the Big Three. It can also pull 10,000 pounds thanks to the Super Duty-ton frame, suspension, axles (a solid front on the 4×4 model), and of course the Class IV hitch that comes standard.

Now, some 15 years after Excursion discontinued production in the United States (which produced a limited number of 2006 models for Mexico), General Motors has unrivaled control over most SUVs.

But how long can GM’s dominance last? In the eyes of many, the Dearborn automaker seems interested again in the mouthwatering cake. After all, a fully functional new suburb could easily cost well over $80,000.

The all-new 2023 Ford Excursion is the subject of a lot of speculation lately. This is the largest SUV ever produced and will be returning shortly. This F-250-based SUV was last produced in 2005, and now Ford can bring the iconic model back to life. According to many reports, this model will be launched once again, at some point in 2020.

Tours will get a redesign, a new engine, and new architecture. The SUV segment is growing rapidly, and the Excursion is sure to become an instant hit. Both diesel and petrol engines will be offered. In addition, the Blue Oval will introduce several trim levels and the possibility of a high-performance variant.

The upcoming 2023 Ford Excursion will be the largest SUV in its segment. Previously, the Excursion was 226 inches long. For comparison, the Expedition MAX is 222 inches long.

Moreover, the Chevrolet Suburban has a length of 224 inches. However, it is an extended version, and Excursion is not. Ford plans to present a new design that will look unique and modern.

The 2023 excursion will borrow some hints from the F-250 truck, as before. According to the latest reports, this SUV will offer a lot of standard equipment and some innovative features. Generally, when it arrives, the 2023 Ford Excursion will look strong, and will probably go up on a new platform.

Meet the 2023 Ford Excursion that comes from a very special nation, imagination. It was sketched by innov8designlab and shared on social media a few hours ago, and looks ready to tackle some steep slopes and slippery trails, so long as it fits.

Its sheer size, as it was hypothetically built on top of the Super Duty, as the original was at the time, would have provided a very spacious interior, with lots of leg and headroom, and a very large cargo area. The 4×4’s large storage space has been further enhanced in this regard, as it features a roof rack for hauling additional gear, complete with a set of LED lights above the windscreen.

The steel bumpers at either end, finished in the same blue as the rest of the exterior, are another highlight of this digital assembly, which also has plenty of ground clearance thanks to the new suspension. The wheels are wrapped in fat tires that are supposed to improve traction in sticky and/or slippery conditions and have an additional light bar mounted on the front bumper.

As for that impressive face, it comes straight from Super Duty, albeit with a few tweaks. The unofficial interpretation of the modern Excursion had large side mirrors, and no side steps, which would have made getting in and out quite tricky.

New Excursion Hardly anything fits into a crowd more easily than the usual Ford Excursion 2023 platform or E-350 Super Duty van-Becker—but nothing goes out of the ordinary with the interior.

The typical layout of the convertible SUV calls for the elimination of the second and third-row seats, replaced by two large seats and up to three rear-facing jump seats, all upholstered in high-grade leather.

Thanks to exclusive suspension modifications, the SUV’s ride quality is much better than we hoped for, and there’s no way we’ll flinch. wake up from a nap. Today’s market is full of SUVs with pretty impressive dimensions but back in the day, there were even bigger models. This primarily refers to Ford Excursion, which was in production between 1999 and 2005. It is one of the biggest SUVs ever made, based on the F-250 Super Duty pickup . These days, we are getting reports about the possible comeback of the nameplate. Allegedly, the blue oval company is already working on the new model, which could come as the 2023 Ford Excursion.

At this point, the revived Excursion is just a rumor. The officials are still quiet, so it’s hard to talk about details. On the other hand, we may presume some base design solutions and features. More precisely, we expect to see the same design approach as in the case of the original model, though everything will be adapted to the modern era of the automotive industry

The comeback of this large SUV has been rumored and if we can trust rumors, the all-new 2023 Ford Excursion could arrive already in the next year. At this point, we don’t know anything about design and features, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make some predictions, especially in terms of base design characteristics.

This particularly refers to the base design approach, which would be the same as in the case of the original model. We would see a design that’s based on Ford’s Super Duty pickup, the F-250. The two models would share most of the parts, though we presume that the new SUV would come with slight revisions regarding suspension setup and similar things.

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind about the exterior is its gigantic size. If you remember the original model, you know it was the biggest SUV on the market, with more than 137 inches in wheelbase. Meanwhile, the competition got bigger as well, so models like GMC Yukon XL now feature 134 inches in wheelbase. Therefore, we may expect the 2023 Ford Excursion to be even bigger. Some sources suggest that the new model could feature more than 140 inches between the axles.

In terms of styling, we don’t expect bigger surprises. The 2023 Ford Excursion would come with a familiar design approach, especially in terms of the front end. Of course, we are talking about the same front face as on the F-250, with the same grille, headlights etc. The rest of the body would come in a typical wagon manner, long and extremely spacious.

Without any doubt, the first thing that comes to mind about interior design is the amount of space. With the expected dimensions, there is no doubt that the 2023 Ford Excursion would feature tremendous amounts of space. We would see three extremely spacious rows of seats, where even the third row would feature more than 40 inches in legroom. As result, the new model would be able to accommodate eight adult passengers with ease. The cargo area would also bring tons of space, as the overall volume would probably go way over 150 cubic feet.

On the other hand, the dashboard design would feature the same shape as the one found in the F-250. Still, we might see minor upgrades for this occasion, in the form of nicer materials and new tech features. Speaking of the tech features, we presume that the new SUV would come standard with the company’s new, vertically-oriented screen.

It’s relatively easy to predict what would happen under the hood of the 2023 Ford Excursion. We presume that the engine lineup would be the same as in the pickup sibling, which indicates three powertrain options on the offer. Base models would come with a 6.2-liter V8, which puts out around 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The upgrade would come in the form of a 7.3-liter Godzilla V8 engine, which comes with a max output of 430 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

Finally, we also expect to see a diesel version of the SUV. That model would come with the monstrous 6.7-liter turbodiesel, which puts out around 475 horsepower and 1.050 pound-feet of torque.

All three engines would come coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

I Own a 2008 F350 and I love it. The wife and I both our looking to purchase a new family vehicle in 2023. We would love to see the new excursion that will be our first choice.

With the changing market toward the woke EV market, please don’t ignore the Thousands of normal American truck customers that would line up to buy an excursion. I sold my 2003 7.3L Excursion when it didn’t fit in the garage in my new house. I have had 17 years of sale remorse and while I owned one of the 6 L disaster engines, I would buy a 2023 Excursion without hesitation. 113K miles on my RAM 3500 and this one would just take the place of the worthless diesel grand Cherokee I am stuck with.

I had a 2000 Excursion with the V10 and it was the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. It was great in the snow,rain or just about anything I put it through. I kept it up to par. I just lost it on New Year’s morning to a drunk driver. She totalled the whole rear end. When the New Excursion comes out I plan on buying one and hopefully it upholds to the older models. They are beautiful and very dependable and stout. Love them

Hell No! I’ll take my 2000 v10 over that any day! This new version is bound to be more plastic and have more emissions crap on it! Not to mention the price tag! If the new Expeditions are $60k+ then how much is this thing going to cost?

The return of the 2023 Ford Excursion is more likely than ever. We can all agree that bigger is better. There are several speculations concerning the Excursion SUV’s probable comeback. A small step at a time. Nothing is official yet, but established automotive brands are resurrecting vintage nameplates. The Excursion is an ideal choice, and Ford stands to gain significantly from the new full-size SUV.

Of course, given that the Excursion is the world’s largest SUV, you can see where this is heading. From 1999 until 2005, this big SUV was manufactured. Now, several reputable sources are speculating about its possible comeback as the 2022 model. We’ve compiled all of the important facts, so have a look.

2023 Excursion Dimensions and Exterior Design

The forthcoming 2023 Ford Excursion will have nearly identical proportions to its predecessor. Because the platform will be new, we cannot anticipate the precise dimensions of the SUV. Ford, on the other hand, will undoubtedly provide the biggest SUV. At the present, the Chevy Suburban, which measures 134 inches in length, dominates the full-size SUV segment. Given that the last Excursion was 137 inches long, we expect slightly bigger dimensions than the Suburban model.

A new Eddie Bauer trim level debuts. It's equipped similarly to last year's Limited trim and also includes Arizona Beige exterior trim, two-tone leather seating and available second-row captain's chairs. Introduction: Ford unleashed the Excursion on North American consumers in 2000. Based on the F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickup trucks, the Excursion is Ford's largest SUV. It's also bigger than the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL. The Excursion is intended to serve those with large broods and towing needs.

Body Styles/Trims/Options: The four-door Excursion is offers eight- or nine-passenger seating with either two- or four-wheel-drive. XLT, XLT Premium, Eddie Bauer and Limited trims are available.

XLT models come well equipped, with Premium versions adding power rear quarter windows, illuminated running boards, aluminum wheels, rear audio controls, automatic headlights, a trip computer and front captain's chairs. Eddie Bauer models include Arizona Beige trim, fog lights, turn signal sideview mirrors, automatic climate control and power adjustable pedals. Limited ups the ante with body-color trim, a premium audio system, a reversible cargo mat, heated front seats, a memory feature for seats and pedals and a HomeLink universal transmitter.

A notable option for XLT Premium, Eddie Bauer and Limited is a DVD-based rear seat entertainment system. Other options include an in-dash six-disc CD changer for all trim levels except for Limited trim and second row captain's chairs (available on Eddie Bauer and Limited). We'd recommend that you opt for the reverse sensing system to help maneuver this behemoth.

Powertrains and Performance: Three engines are available on two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive Excursions. Standard on all models is a 5.4-liter V8 that makes 255 horsepower at 4,500 rpm and 350 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 rpm. Optional engines include a 6.8-liter V10 or a 7.3-liter turbodiesel V8. The V10 produces 310 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque. The Power Stroke turbodiesel generates 250 horsepower and super-beefy 525 pound-feet of torque. All are matched to a four-speed automatic transmission. A 3.73 rear axle ratio is standard. When properly equipped, the Excursion can tow 11,000 pounds.

A more powerful and efficient 6.0-liter turbodiesel will be released later this year, making 325 horsepower at 3,300 rpm and 550 foot-pounds of torque at 2,000 rpm, offering up to 10 percent better fuel economy and 20 percent lower emissions. It's mated to a new five-speed automatic transmission that features higher first- and second-gear ratios to launch a truck loaded with cargo more quickly and smoothly.

Safety: The Excursion comes standard with dual front airbags and four-wheel disc antilock brakes. Optional equipment includes power adjustable foot pedals and a reverse sensing system. Designed to be as crash-compatible with regular passenger cars as possible, the Excursion includes a Blockbeam at the front of the frame to help dissipate crash energy during a collision with a smaller vehicle. The Excursion hasn't been crash tested by NHTSA or IIHS.

Interior Design/Special Features: Donated by the Super Duty pickup truck, the rather industrial dashboard of the Excursion prioritizes function over form. Eddie Bauer models dress things up a bit with a two-tone color scheme, while Limiteds get cherrywood trim to jazz up the interior. Excursion can carry nine passengers in XLT trim, but all other models are restricted to eight because of the front captain's chairs. Maximum cargo space is 146.4 cubic feet.

Driving Impressions/Opinions: Remember that time you moved from your apartment or condo to your first home and rented one of those local U-Haul rental trucks? Driving an Excursion is a lot like driving that U-Haul, albeit one with far more refinement and creature comforts. While the 2003 suspension changes have improved the ride quality somewhat, this is still a large vehicle, one that doesn't take kindly to most urban parking garages and lots. It takes longer to stop than most of the cars on the road, so tailgating isn't such a wise idea. Fuel economy is also quite poor.

On the positive side, you get tons of cargo- and passenger-carrying capacity, plus the security of knowing that no one else on the road will try to mess with you. If you're in the market for such a vehicle, and neither the Chevy Suburban nor the GMC Yukon XL does it for you size-wise, this is your SUV. Otherwise, we recommend that you try something a little smaller on for size, like the all-new 2003 Ford Expedition.

2023 Ford Expedition: Capable But Thirsty And Pricey

For 2023 the Ford Expedition is the blue oval’s biggest and brawniest SUV , but it wasn’t always that way. Back in the 2000s, there was the even larger Excursion, based on the heavy-duty F-250 pickup . But in 2007, Ford replaced the giant Excursion with the merely huge Expedition Max, a stretched version of the third-generation Expedition that did all of the same things in a more efficient package. The pair have continued ever since and entered their fourth generation in 2017. Following a big update last year, the Expedition continues into 2023 largely unchanged.

The 2023 Expedition is offered in XL, XLT, Limited, Timberline (new in 2022), King Ranch and Platinum trims. Rear-wheel drive comes standard and four-wheel drive is available across the lineup. The extended length Max starts with XLT and doesn’t include the Timberline. Every Expedition comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, though output varies based on the configuration. Most trims see 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, but the Limited model gets 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. 

In this familiar class, entirely new players are rare, but Jeep’s Wagoneer set new standards for jumbo-sized SUVs last year. Buyers might also consider the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe , GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, or the new Toyota Sequoia . Though Ford puts up solid specs compared to the other SUVs, the Expedition’s design and interior are aging. All of its competitors offer more up-to-date interiors and fresher technology, though Ford has recently updated the Expedition’s infotainment system.

The Expedition should be the go-to for Ford fans needing passenger- and cargo-hauling capabilities. It offers three rows of spacious seating and a cushy second-row bench by default. Second-row captain’s chairs cut seating capacity by one but open more storage and space to move around. There’s plenty of room in the third row too, but GM and Jeep now offer more with their newer designs and independent rear suspensions. They handle a little better too. Similarly, the Expeditions’ once class-leading 9,300-pound towing capacity is still impressive but now topped by Jeep and Toyota.

Ford equips a 12-inch infotainment display as standard kit, and it runs the automaker’s fantastic Sync 4 interface. The large touchscreen lets users interact with climate and other settings while running another app, such as the standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Buyers can upgrade with a Bang & Olufsen stereo and an even more expansive 15.5-inch display—the same one from Ford’s electric Mustang Mach-E .

Ford equips a generous list of standard safety equipment that includes adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure alerts, active park assist, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts and automatic emergency braking with forward collision warnings. The base XL starts at $54,155 with rear-wheel drive (not including fees) and tops out at $86,615 for an all-wheel Max Platinum. The mid-line Limited gets enough extra features to justify the cost for under $70,000.

Performance: 14/15

The Expedition’s twin-turbo V6 never feels underpowered and thanks to the responsive 10-speed automatic never seems to get caught unprepared. Acceleration is strong and smooth, and the big SUV maintains comfortable ride quality in most situations. Most trims see 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, but the Limited model gets 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. 

Towing reaches 9,300 pounds in most configurations and 9,000 pounds in the extended Max configuration.

Even the mighty Chevy Suburban can’t match the Expedition’s power output and towing capacity. Its standard V8 delivers 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, and towing reaches 8,100 pounds. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer can out-tow the Expedition, with a 9,850-pound rating.

Fuel Economy: 12/15

The most efficient Ford Expedition is the base rear-drive variant, which returns 17 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg combined. Adding all-wheel drive drops those numbers slightly to 16 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway and 18 mpg combined. The least efficient Timberline trim returns 16 mpg in the city, 19 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg combined. The four-wheel drive Max loses 2 mpg highway and 1 mpg combined.

The Expedition’s powerful V6 outperforms the Chevrolet Suburban’s base 5.3-liter V8 on fuel economy. It returns an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city, 20 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg combined. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer’s most efficient configuration returns 14 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg combined.

Safety & Driver Assistance Tech: 11/15

Though the Expedition hasn’t been crash-tested recently, Ford equips a generous list of standard safety kit and offers several upgrades. The Expedition is available with Ford’s BlueCruise, a hands-free driving assistant that works on highways and other major roads in North America. 

Many of the Expedition’s competitors also lack recent crash test data, but that’s only an indication of how hard it is to test every make and model, not an indictment of their safety. Most offer the same baseline safety equipment, and some can be had with other flavors of hands-free driving assistant, such as the GMC Yukon, which is available with GM’s Super Cruise system.

Comfort & Room: 13/15

There’s no shortage of space, and Ford configured the Expedition’s expansive cabin in useful ways. The front seats are deep, well-padded and supportive. Top trims add soft, rich leather and heating or ventilation. Second-row passengers have equally generous space, and both available seating options offer good comfort, though the captain’s chairs are shapelier and more supportive. The third-row seats are adult-friendly, and the Max boosts spaciousness in all areas.

With 42.6 inches of second-row legroom it beats out the Suburban’s 42 inches, and its 36.1 inches of third-row legroom offers fractionally more than at Chevy and GMC (36). The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer both offer slightly better space in back rows, but the Expedition’s front buckets are noticeably roomier than the Jeep’s. Others are much closer in seating space, such as the Chevy Tahoe, which is nearly identical to the Expedition. The Tahoe does offer more cargo space, however. 

Infotainment: 14/15

Ford equips a 12-inch touchscreen as standard and offers a massive 15.5-inch system that first debuted in the electric Mustang Mach-E. There’s no wrong choice, as both offer responsive navigation and crisp graphics. Ford’s Sync infotainment system is one of the better interfaces on the market, offering intuitive menus and great features. The newest Sync 4A is available on the bigger screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air updates, Bluetooth, SiriusXM radio, HD radio and more all come standard.

Also available: Wi-Fi hotspot, eight USB ports throughout the cabin and a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio. There’s also a rear-seat entertainment package in the top three trims, geared toward families with kids in the back.

Jeep gives the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer its Uconnect infotainment system, which is one of few on the market that can best Ford’s Sync. The latest system is easier to navigate and even more intuitive and is less distracting to use.

Cargo Space & Storage: 12/15

The regular Expedition offers up to 20.9 cubic-feet of space behind the third-row seats, 63.6 behind the second-row seats and a whopping 104.6 cubic-feet with all seats folded flat. Buyers can step up to the Expedition Max, which expands those numbers to 36, 79.6 and 121.5, respectively. 

Even with those numbers, many of the Expedition’s closest rivals outperform it in cargo space. The Tahoe offers up to 123 cubic-feet with all seats folded and the Wagoneer delivers 117 cubic-feet. While the Expedition Max is competitive with those two SUVs, the standard model is noticeably smaller in key areas.

Style & Design: 7/10

Ford has updated the Expedition over the years and introduced new models that have helped keep it fresh, but there’s no denying its age. Buyers wanting the latest and greatest styling won’t be satisfied, as the Expedition isn’t as sharp or eye-catching as its rivals from Jeep and General Motors. The same is true inside, where there are more hard plastics and cheap-looking parts than there should be in an SUV starting in the mid-$50,000 range.

Is the 2023 Ford Expedition Worth it? Which Expedition is the Best Value? 

Getting the most desirable full-size SUV from Ford doesn’t come cheap. Fortunately for the Expedition, its competitors can grow even more expensive. Even so, the Ford easily passes $90,000 with a few options and the longer Max configuration. The base XL starts at $54,155 with rear-wheel drive (not including fees). It goes up to $59,190 for XLT, while the Limited trim starts just over $68,000 and brings enough luxury features to get the job done without feeling terribly overpriced, so that’s our pick. The more luxurious trims bump up to $78,115 (King Ranch) and $80,565 (Platinum). The four-wheel drive only Timberline is $71,110 to start. 

Those seeking more people and stuff space can go for the longer Max, which starts at $62,190 in rear-drive and tops out at $83,565 to start. All-wheel drive adds about $3,000.

The Jeep Wagoneer is more expensive to start, at a little short of $61,000, but it offers a modern, premium experience that lower trims of the Expedition can’t match. It’s also easy to drive the price past $90,000 but at that price the Jeep offers much more tech and a super high-end interior the Expedition doesn’t have.

How Much Does it Cost to Insure the 2023 Ford Expedition?

The 2023 Ford Expedition insurance costs match most of its peers. According to our data, a typical 30-year-old female driver with a clean record can expect an average annual premium that goes up to over $2,400, though this averages all 50 states. What's new for 2024.

For 2024, the Expedition receives a few minor updates, including a new Wild Green paint color. Front tow hooks are now included on the all-wheel-drive XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum models that are also equipped with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package. The second row adopts USB-C charge ports, and Ford has reduced the three years of complimentary Connected Navigation to one year.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2024 Ford Expedition / Expedition Max starts at $57,520 and goes up to $82,690 depending on the trim and options.

We think the middle-of-the-road Limited trim level on the regular-wheelbase Expedition is the one to get. Not only does it have a nice mix of standard features (leather-trimmed seats, a Bang & Olufsen stereo, and power-operated running boards), but it's also available with an enticing performance option that should make the big rig better to drive. Opting for the Stealth Performance package brings a sportier suspension setup, a more powerful engine (440 horsepower versus 375), and distinct dark-colored exterior details, including 22-inch wheels. All-wheel drive­­–for those who need it–costs about $3000 extra.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Motivating the Expedition is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 and responsive 10-speed automatic transmission that pair with rear- or all-wheel drive. The standard engine makes 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque but, on Limited models, that output is boosted to 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet. An even higher-output version is available on the Timberline trim and on the Limited with the Stealth Performance package that bumps those figures to 440 horses and 510 pound-feet. The Timberline model bolted to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds at our test track, besting the V-8-powered Tahoe Z71 by a whopping 2.4 seconds; the Stealth Performance model shaved off 0.2 seconds from the Timberline's time. All Expeditions employ an independent rear suspension. While passengers are comforted by its soft ride, the driver is penalized by ungainly handling and imprecise steering feel. The Expedition can tow up to 9300 pounds, while the longer Expedition Max's rating is capped at 9000 pounds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The Expedition with rear-wheel drive has EPA estimates of up to 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. All-wheel-drive models have estimates of 16 mpg city and up to 22 mpg highway. The Expedition and Expedition Max we tested on our 75-mph fuel-economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen , fell short of that mark, returning 20 mpg. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Expedition's cabin materials and trim pieces get fancier from model to model, topping out on the Platinum trim, which is appointed with rich leather upholstery and massaging front seats. Both the regular Expedition and long-wheelbase Expedition Max have spacious interiors and—unlike some rivals—a third row that won't torture adults. A three-seat bench is standard for the second row, but you can spec a pair of captain's chairs if you'd like. The Max offers unbeatable interior cubby storage too. Every model has a power-folding third row that can be controlled from the cargo area or back seats. Both second and third rows fold completely flat for a level floor, making it easier to load things.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Expedition comes standard with a huge 12.0-inch touchscreen that runs Ford's Sync4 infotainment software. Along with the ability to accept over-the-air updates, it features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot is available too, as is a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo and a rear-seat entertainment system. If the standard touchscreen isn't big enough, the Expedition can also be fitted with a vertically oriented 15.5-inch unit, which can also be found inside the electric Mustang Mach-E .

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Along with an assortment of standard and optional driver-assistance technology , the Expedition offers two highly advanced pieces of equipment. The top-of-the-line Platinum model comes with Ford's hands-free-driving feature called BlueCruise. The off-road-oriented Timberline trim features Trail Turn Assist which gives the SUV a tighter turning radius by braking the inside rear wheel in sharp, slow-speed turns when the vehicle is in all-wheel-drive mode and on soft surfaces. Ford's baby Bronco is an authentic foil to the big Bronco 2-Door and 4-Door. It brings rugged styling, better-than-average off-road capability and thoughtful utility features to a segment of SUVs mostly intended for commuting. It does come at an elevated cost, however.

First, the bad news: The 2024 Ford Bronco Sport is pricier than you might think given its small dimensions. It costs a lot more than other subcompact SUVs, and apart from its standard all-wheel drive system and class-leading cargo space, its value will be questionable for many buyers.

OK, now the good news! The Bronco Sport is a lovable, versatile and just-plain enjoyable small crossover that’s especially perfect for those planning on getting their little SUV dirty. True, the range-topping Badlands is the best-suited for off-roading, but it’s important to note the Bronco Sport is more about what you’re doing after the drive as opposed to the drive itself. Its clever storage, functional roof rails, pop-up liftgate glass and available tow hitch are ready and willing to accept whatever outdoor adventure gear you’re packing. The driving experience is also charmingly more truck-ish than other subcompact crossovers, which just adds to the abundant character already provided by its style inside and out.   

In other words, the Bronco Sport is best-suited to a niche of customers. Thing is, though, that niche (outdoor adventurers) is one many folks aspire to these days – even if many also admit they’ll rarely partake in that Patagonia-donning lifestyle. Either way, you should be pleased with the Bronco Sport. Should the price tag be concerning, though, the Subaru Crosstrek , Volkswagen Taos and off-road versions of the Toyota RAV4 provide a similar vibe at lower prices or with better value.

If you’re a fan of the Houston Astros, and specifically their “ tequila sunrise ” unis of yesteryear, boy are you ever gonna love the Ford Bronco Sport Free Wheeling special edition introduced for 2024. It officially pays homage to Ford’s off-roaders of the 1970s (rather than Nolan Ryan and friends) and features five stripes of reds and oranges on the hood and sides, plus red-accented wheels. The interior gets similar stripes on the seats and red dash/door accents. It’s a lot. For the exact opposite effect, the new Black Appearance package for the Big Bend trim level adds matte black wheels, a contrasting black roof, sport seats and badging. Finally, the Outer Banks and Badlands trims get a nicer steering wheel cover, and two new exterior colors debut: Azure Gray and Desert Sand. Sadly, a whole heap of colors bite the dust: Alto Blue, Area 51, Cyber Orange, Iconic Silver, Peak Blue and Yellowstone Metallic. They weren’t alone: The base Bronco Sport is no more, which raises the base price even higher. That said, Ford did lower prices for all versions but the Badlands in April 2024. They are listed in our pricing section below.

What are the Bronco Sport interior and in-car technology like?

The Bronco Sport feels like a little truck inside. You sit in an upright position and gaze over a long, straight hood with two large power bulges. Compared to the mechanically related  Escape , the Bronco Sport's unique cabin design is more upright and utilitarian. The air vents are high, straddling the shared 8-inch touchscreen, freeing up space for a handy shelf for a phone or something else small. There are also nifty touches like the rubberized, graspable adjustment prongs on those air vents, plus high-quality pieces like the spongy soft-touch dash and sturdy GOAT Modes dial (that would be Go Over Any Terrain, the Bronco term for off-road drive settings). Admittedly, there are cheaper plastics in the Bronco Sport than you'll find in less-expensive subcompact SUVs, but at least Ford's use of color and fabric choices in certain trims makes up for it in some respects.

Interior storage is also exceptional . Beyond the multiple storage solutions up front, there are numerous features as you move rearward for weekend hiking and camping warriors. Certain trim levels get zippered pockets and MOLLE straps on the front seatbacks (how has no one thought of these before?), the liftgate has two LED camp lights and big grab handles that can double as a place to hang wet items, and the raised roof rails are the robust real deal (not raised or fake rails with fixed attachment points). Plus, there's also the extensive outdoor lifestyle option and accessory list, which includes in-vehicle dual-bike storage capability and rubberized easy-to-clean flooring.

The infotainment system is Ford's previous-generation software and is not the quickest unit out there, but it's still easy to use and presents well. Four USB ports are standard. A 4.2-inch central screen in the cluster is too, but higher trims offer a larger 6.5-inch screen in between the physical gauge set.

How big is the Bronco Sport?

While the Bronco Sport may ride on the Escape’s platform, it’s a good deal smaller than the Escape in overall size. It’s a subcompact SUV, and as such, aligns with a Chevrolet Trax , Kia Seltos and Volkswagen Taos . The small size is great for off-roading in tight situations, but it’s less family friendly than many other, more road-oriented crossovers.

You can comfortably seat adults in the back, but it's far from the most spacious in the segment. Rear legroom in particular can be cramped, unlike the Trax and Taos. As such, a rear-facing child seat is a tight fit, so this isn't the best choice for families despite having plenty of cargo capacity to do the job. Indeed, its 32.5 cubic feet of space behind its raised back seat blows away crossovers that are similarly sized on the outside and rivals those that are much bigger like the  Honda CR-V  and  Toyota RAV4 . In fact, you have to slide  the Ford Escape's back seat  far forward in order to match the Bronco Sport's luggage-carrying capability. How is it possible? When it comes to cargo, boxes are better. What are the Bronco Sport fuel economy and performance specs?

All trim levels but the Badlands are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder that produces 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive comes standard. Fuel economy is rated at 25 mpg city, 29 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined. This is considerably lower than most subcompact SUV competitors, but the same as the similarly off-road-oriented  Subaru Forester Wilderness  and just a bit lower than the  Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road . The  RAV4  Woodland Edition is the soft roader to pursue if fuel efficiency is a priority, as it gains the upgrades of the TRD Off-Road, but pairs them with the hybrid powertrain for 37 mpg combined. Of course, all of the above are bigger than the Bronco Sport.

Exclusive to the Badlands is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. This engine puts out 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, which is far more than the subcompact norm and those bigger, off-road-oriented SUVs. It’s also mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, but it adds a torque-vectoring rear differential to the rear axle for better off-road performance. Fuel economy falls even further to 21/26/23 mpg with the bigger engine.

What's the Bronco Sport like to drive?

The rugged Bronco Sport is charming and different in a segment that skews toward the on-road side of the SUV spectrum. The steering has a hint of play/liveliness, making for a small truck feeling on the road, but still possesses the precision we've come to expect from Ford's cars and crossovers. Regardless of trim level, there’s an extra bounce and stiffness to the on-road ride you don’t get in other crossovers this size, likely the result of its shorter wheelbase and off-road-ready suspension. That doesn’t translate into corner-carving prowess, as the Bronco Sport is a little sloppy when you start to push. More on-road-intended competitors like the Kia Seltos, VW Taos and Mazda CX-30 have both superior ride comfort and better handling. So too does the mechanically related  Ford Escape .

When off-road, though, the Bronco Sport shines and is way better than you might expect. Each GOAT (Go Over Any Terrain) mode makes the Bronco Sport drive noticeably different by altering the all-wheel-drive torque split, transmission shift points, traction control/stability control settings, throttle tuning, brake tuning and steering weight. It's also important to note that the Badlands has an extra inch of ground clearance over the other versions. While inching along a trail, we could hear an Outer Banks and Big Bend Bronco Sport bottoming out in places where our Badlands was just fine. Its torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system was also beneficial when driving in sand. At the same time, no one will mistake the Sport for  its big Bronco brother . It's still a crossover and intended to be quieter and more comfortable on-road at the expense of capability off-road.

The 1.5-turbo is not especially quick, but is peppy and has the gravelly bulldog-ish growl that's typical of a three-cylinder. The transmission melts into the background, which is just as well for a vehicle like this — it neither frustrates nor wows. As standard powertrains go, you can do a lot  worse in the small crossover realm. That said, you can also do a lot better and go with the  250-hp 2.0-liter found in the Badlands , which is further paired with an upgraded, torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system that's as much a benefit on road as it is off. It should be offered in more trims.

What is the 2024 Bronco Sport price?

As much as we like the Bronco Sport, it is very pricey for an SUV of its size, even after a significant price drop in April 2024. True, it's base price is higher than it once was because the previous Base trim level was discontinued, leaving the Big Bend trim as the point of entry. Still, other trims go for more than comparable SUVs of its size. 

The core Bronco Sport trim levels are Big Bend, Outer Banks and Badlands, with the Heritage and Free Wheeling more like Big Bends with appearance packages (they are pictured below). Although equipment does increase with each of those core trims, there are fundamental differences. Chiefly, the Outer Banks and Badlands go in different directions beyond the standard equipment offered by the Big Bend. The Outer Banks adds a ton of comfort and convenience features, plus the colorful interior options. The max off-road-oriented Badlands includes the same comfort and convenience items, but with different interior color and exterior design cues. Crucially, it also includes a huge array of off-road goodies like the torque-vectoring rear diff, additional transmission and rear-drive coolers, bash plates, front tow hooks, all-terrain tires and unique Badlands suspension.

According to a dealer bulletin sent earlier in April 2024, as seen by  Cars Direct and relayed here on Autoblog , Ford trimmed a low-four-figure number off all but one Bronco Sport trim: the Badlands. New prices for the 2024 Bronco Sport after the $1,595 destination charge, and their differences from previous pricing, are:

  • Big Bend:  $31,390 ($1,435 less)
  • Heritage:  $33,690 ($1,335 less)
  • Free Wheeling:  $33,990 ($1,335 less)
  • Outer Banks:  $35,530 ($1,980 less)
  • Badlands:  $39,985 (No change)

What are the Bronco Sport safety ratings and driver assistance features?

Every Bronco Sport comes with the Ford Co-Pilot360 driver assistance suite as standard. This includes forward automatic emergency braking, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning, lane-keeping assist and auto high beams. An Assist+ package is available that adds adaptive cruise control, lane centering assist, evasive steering assist and speed sign recognition.

Safety ratings are excellent, with the government ( NHTSA ) giving it a perfect five stars for overall, frontal and side crash protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2023 Bronco Sport a Top Safety Pick+ for its best-possible performance in all  crash tests  and for its crash-prevention tech. Even its standard headlights got the best-possible "Good" rating, which is almost unheard of. The 2024 Bronco Sport had yet to be rated at the time of this writing, but given that it carried over unchanged in ways that would impact IIHS testing, it’s hard to see how it wouldn’t get the same rating.
