At A Glance

Every year Trek seems to add an acronym or two to the features list that describes their bikes. You could call it marketing or propriety loading, or you could call it evolution. Over the years their ABP Convert, Full Floater, E2, DRCV etc. have been hailed as the answer to problems that the average rider hasn’t really been aware of.

trek remedy 9 2015

The fact that the accumulation of all of the above developments have resulted in some of the most competently performing mountain bikes available today suggests that evolution is king. So what have Trek got in store for us this time? Read on as this year Trek may have just surpassed themselves!

We tested the Remedy 9 29 which is the alloy version, it comes in a “love it or hate it” blue and orange; personally I hated it, but have grown to only mildly dislike it now. Some friends, however, have been quite smitten with it, so it’s obviously got that ‘Marmite effect’. The next model up comes in carbon and features a quieter black and red livery.

So apart from a ‘look at me’ colour way what have Trek tweaked for this years’ Remedy? Well this is the 29er Remedy so it now benefits from Boost148, this is a wider hub spacing. What this allows is a wider hub flange, which in turn allows for a wider spoke base, this gives a claimed 15% increase in the strength of the rear wheel.

There is a knock-on effect that means a custom crank is used to ensure the Q factor remains the same, but the chainline is stepped out by 3mm. A further knock-on is wider chainstays so larger volume tyres will fit. It’s an interesting development aimed at 29er bikes with a goal to stiffen the rear wheel.

Next up is the development of the RE:aktiv rear shock. It looks like a Fox DRCV shock and it is a Fox DRCV shock, the difference is that Trek went and got Penske involved. Penske Racing is a specialist, bespoke, high-end suspension company. They supply suspension to at least half of the Formula 1 racing teams and many other top end automotive racing teams across the globe.

The RE in the RE:aktiv is reference to the Penske regressive damper. This is a spring-loaded valve. When the valve is closed it applies low speed compression, this allows a firm pedalling platform and resists geometry changes bought about during body weight shifts etc. The shock holds up well in normal trail riding situations.

When a high pressure spike occurs a large amount of oil is allowed to flow through the shim assembly, giving instant plushness, yet as the spike continues the resistance created as the oil flows through the ports increases high speed resistance, avoiding bottoming and controlling the stroke throughout its range. In layman’s terms, you get electronic shock performance without any need for batteries.

Up front a Rock Shox Pike RC 140mm fork with custom G2 Geometry slots into the E2 headtube. Drivetrain duties are handled with aplomb by Sram X1 11-speed kit and the brakes are Shimano XT. Bontrager Expert tyres in 2.3 guise adorn the Sram 30 wheelset with the custom Boost148 rear wheel. A Rock Shox Reverb stealth is the highlight of the finishing kit. Bontrager provide 750mm wide low-rise bars, 70mm stem and an Evoke saddle.

On The Trail

Straight off the bat the Remedy 9 felt right. The riding position is comfortable, with weight distribution feeling nicely placed in the centre of the bike. There is a slight bias toward weighting the front wheel but not so much as to feel too racy or create any wrist discomfort.

Get on the pedals and the bike glides smoothly on the fast rolling Bontrager rubber, they are a summer combination but held up well throughout the test, which saw its fair share of wet conditions. There is more to this easy speed than the rubber though, this is the first signs of what the new RE:aktiv shock is all about.

The bike just feels stable. Point it up and it holds itself like a lady with a straight back, it does not sink into its travel.

It pedals uphill with ease, a sort of calmness; efficient yet active. It is not the ruthless efficiency of some VPP designs, nor the open, active feel of some others. The position is such that only very minor shifts in weight are required and when it comes time to clamber up and over steps or rooty sections the rear wheel tracks the ground with subtlety.

It is on what I refer to as ‘trails’ that the Trek Remedy 9 29 impressed the most. Those trails that have a bit of everything; flow, drops, ups and downs, roots, rocks…you get the picture. On these sections the bike really does give confidence. Get on the gas and the bike is stiff and reactive, keep the hammer down over choppy ground and the bike seems to take the top off the bumps, feedback is clear but not harsh.

Hit a series of corners and it grips hard, the rear staying composed, tight and then getting just light enough on the exit to make flicking the bike over for the next one a dream. Hit a big root bed at Mach 5 and the RE:aktiv shock responds in an instant, opening the shock and then controlling the stroke, off the root bed and it is back to a stable hard pedalling platform again.

The shock has the usual Fox CTD settings, the Climb and Trail modes make use of the RE:aktiv damper whilst the Descend mode leaves the shock wide open. In the past we always found ourselves fiddling with the knob or worse still forgetting we had left it in the Climb mode halfway down a hill.

If you leave this shock in Trail mode it just does all the work for you. You can ride around all day and not feel like you are missing out. In fact in the Descend mode the shock loses some of it’s lively feel and almost deadens the bike. Trek and the team at Penske have really worked wonders here, it’s active suspension without the need for you to twist levers to get the most out of it.

It’s not every mile you ride that can be filled with features though, many if not most miles are on tracks and paths. Here the Remedy really is a mileage muncher, calmly swallowing up the distance yet always happy to play on any little ledges or lips that may present themselves.

Heading downhill is a similar story; the balanced position and superbly controlled suspension make the Remedy 9 an accomplished and eager performer. Stable enough to give confidence yet agile enough to be fun, the Trek was never intimidated and proved itself capable of taking on some proper features, including drops of around 8 feet, landings were extremely well controlled.

The ride - it is taut yet comfortable, calm yet capable, and always composed.

Flow is in this bikes DNA, it just rolls so beautifully through corners and over any terrain, always keeping you informed but never hitting the panic button.

This bike is super-efficient; it’s not just pedalling efficient, it climbs so well, rolls so fast and carries momentum with such aplomb it almost feels like cheating!

Propriety parts, as Trek continue to develop their bikes they are introducing more custom fit parts. This is great on the one hand as it moves technology forwards, but early adopters will be limited for choice for replacements while the component manufacturers catch up.

So have Trek continued their quest to perfect the mountain bike or are Boost148 and RE:aktiv shocks something of a gimmick?

Firstly, Boost148, the introduction of wider rear hubs for long travel 29ers makes good sense and Trek have made a bold move by making a start with the introduction of Boost148.

It is fair to say that the rear end on the Trek Remedy 9 29 was certainly stiff; it was more a stiffness that we did not think about though, rather than flexibility that we noticed, it’s a good balance between feel and response.

Secondly, RE:aktiv, simply put; superb!

The DRCV shock has always impressed, but the addition of the RE:aktiv damper has really pushed the boundary of what a shock can do.

The Remedy rode fantastically, the levels of control exhibited by the RE:aktiv shock were in fact shocking!

Add to this the excellent Pike up front, a solid spec list and the benefit of years of evolution in terms of geometry, and yes, all those acronyms, and you get one very capable machine.

The Remedy 29 is one of the easiest, most stable and confidence-inspiring bikes on the planet…period.

Trek Remedy 9 – first ride review

All-rounder full-sus bike that's easy to ride

Russell Burton/Future Publishing

Guy Kesteven

trek remedy 9 2015

Trek’s Remedy frame has stayed largely unchanged for a while, but this year’s version is tidier than ever. Sorted componentry completes a very easy to ride all-rounder, although it’s definitely more soft roader than hardcore hammer bike.

Ride & handling: Confidence boosting XC bike

Getting ready to ride is simplified by the included plastic sag indicators. These clip onto the fork leg and shock body to give a usefully accurate baseline pressure setting straight away.

It’s particularly useful on the DRCV dampers because they don’t feel like normal springs in their initial response. That’s because the twin chamber design only opens to full volume at a specific point in the stroke. The first part of travel ramps up quickly from a plush initial start to a stable pedalling platform, as though you’re riding a much shorter travel bike.

While it’s no lightweight, the frame stiffness is impressive for harnessing shoulder and leg power and the XR3 tyres roll okay once you’ve got it going. In other words, once you’re tapping out a tempo rather than trying to accelerate the Remedy cruises and hustles along singletrack and climbs like a tighter, shorter travel rig.

The ABP back end is impressively balanced in relation to pedalling forces, so there’s no obvious tug or kickback when you’re trying to torque your way up a rough, rock/root stepped climb.

The handling is very well balanced otherwise, with enough stem length to keep the front wheel straight on steep climbs but not so long it gets outwitted when you’re weaving it through tight tree switchbacks. The Bontrager tyres are predictable in most conditions.

The frame is impressively stiff from bars to thru-axle back end, and while the Fox 32 fork can feel soft and flexy up front it’s more forgiving than a 34 or Revelation for traction and comfort.

The Mino Link chip gives you the option of slightly quicker handling and more ground clearance when pedalling if you’re in a cross-country mood, or slacking it out and dropping it a fraction for a more surefooted feel (which is what we went for). Being able to drop and raise the saddle instantly is a massive bonus when pushing the pace on roller coaster trails.

The pivot kinematics mean it sucks up mid-sized chunder and bigger speed killing blocks well for a 26in-wheeled bike. Bigger hits also open the second shock chamber automatically for a more linear and lump-hungry feel, and the back end feels seamless but not soggy even when slamming through serious geology.

The same twin chamber system also makes the fork generously plush and linear when you’re plonking down steps off the brakes or rattling over rocks. The lurch from mid-stroke ramp-up to sudden deep dive can catch you out if you’re already pushing the limit of braking/cornering traction and our more aggressive riders really didn’t like it.

Unlike ‘normal,’ single air-chamber forks you can’t just add a bit of oil to make the spring more progressive (ie, get harder to compress as it goes), and Trek’s new volume reducer shim – which does the job instead – isn’t available yet. Using the Trail setting of the CTD damper is enough to noticeably reduce unexpected nosedive, but this fork is just too willing to plunge in big compressions and berms.

Trek’s 2013 Remedy is the most sorted yet – it allies great kit to a confidence-inspiring and friendly character. The smooth DRCV suspension helps even moderate riders milk every millimetre of travel, although more aggressive riders are definitely going to want the fork-firming bungs for more predictable braking and berm-carving performance.

Frame & equipment: Well-evolved and clever

The Remedy frame outline hasn’t changed much since the double-chamber DRCV (Dual Rate Control Valve) shock was added to the bike for 2010. A stiff, tapered E2 head tube, a double-curved down tube, that broad top tube, the single-piece magnesium ‘Evo’ shock linkage and the 142x12mm screw-thru rear axle still keep everything securely in line.

The Full Floater shock – squeezed between an extended swingarm tip and the shock linkage – plus the Active Braking Pivot (ABP) rear pivot design are proven performance enhancers, while a switchable Mino Link on the seatstay can slacken angles by half a degree and drop the bottom bracket 10mm. A plastic down tube guard and chainguide tabs mean it’s ready for whatever roller system radical riders might want to fit, and whatever rocks fly as a result.

The Reverb dropper post is externally routed as standard, but there’s an exit hole for internal routing if you upgrade to the Stealth version of the post. The rear brake mount is IS (International Standard) rather than the new-style post-mount, and the bottom bracket is a conventional screw-in cup style. The second one may not be cutting edge, but will please those who value easy bearing replacement and proven reliability over a contemporary oversized or press-fit crank setup.

Trek have also stuck with a conventional triple chainset to give a full 30 gear spread. Shimano’s ultra reliable XT stop and go gear is a welcome sight for high-mileage-with-low-maintenance fans, and the clutch rear mech keeps the drivetrain quieter.

Bontrager were one of the first to introduce wide yet light trail wheels, and these Rhythm Elite wheels wrapped in big, usefully grippy but not too slow XR3 rubber are a great match for the ride.

The 720mm/80mm cockpit is a decent balance between power assisted steering, reasonable breathing space and tree punching inconvenience, and the fat Bontrager saddle won’t cripple you if you go for a quick blast in your boxer shorts. Though your neighbours might if you don’t wear anything else.

The slick gold Kashima coating on the custom (Trek-only) DRCV Fox fork is a nice touch, and staying with 32 rather than 34mm legs saves half a pound of weight. While the rear shock isn’t similarly gilded, it does share the dual chamber internals and synced CTD (Climb Trail Descend) damping.

Tested: Trek Remedy 9 27.5

The not-so-minor details.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5

Trek Bikes Australia

AUD4,699.00

Size tested:

Excellent suspension. No nonsense, go-for-year spec. Stiff front end. Well-rounded geometry.

Narrow bar. Cabling is untidy. Messy cockpit.

About a year ago, we put the question to some Trek staff: “What are you guys doing with 27.5?” Their response? “Why would we do 27.5 when we’ve got the best 29ers on the market?” Very cagey! Six months later, and out come two new lines of 27.5″ bikes from Trek, including the one you see here, the Remedy 9 27.5. By the way, it’s very orange. Had you noticed?

Trek Remedy 9 27.5-1

The Remedy has been Trek’s all-mountain / trail bike for a number of years now, and it’s always been an impressive machine, well noted for its excellent suspension and spritely feel. For 2014, Trek have made two big changes to the Remedy. There’s the wheel size, obviously, with the Remedy now packing 27.5″ hoops, but they’ve also reduced the travel, back to 140mm from 150mm in previous generations.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5-9

It’s extremely rare to see a bike’s travel reduced from year to year. Ordinarily, advances in suspension technologies and efficiencies result in travel increases, so to see a reduction was a surprise.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5-12

There are two main reasons for the move, as we see it. The first is to create a logical progression in the Trek range. There’s the 120mm-travel Fuel EX, the 160mm-travel Slash enduro bike, and now the Remedy slots neatly in the middle at 140mm. The second reason relates to wheel size. With a larger diameter wheel, you can get away with a little bit less travel somewhat, especially in terms of sheer ability to roll over obstacles.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5 studio-29

In other respects, the Remedy is largely unchanged from previous years. It still uses Trek’s lively, active and smooth ABP / Full Floater suspension system and large-volume, twin-chambered DRCV shock. The frame is constructed Trek’s Alpha aluminium, with plenty of nice touches, including integrated down tube and chain slap protection, and internal cabling for the front and rear derailleurs. In spite of the internal shift cabling, somehow the cables do look cluttered and a bit messy overall, especially when compared to other bikes like the Focus SAM or Giant Trance which we’ve been riding lately.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5-18

The Remedy continues to run the Mino Link geometry adjustment system. Flipping the small chip/insert located the junction of the seat stay and EVO Link gives you a little over half a degree of head angle adjustment and lowers or raises the bottom bracket by 8mm. Given that the Remedy’s angles are already quite sharp by today’s standards, we left the bike in the slacker setting, for a 67.5-degree head angle. It’s really interesting to note that the Remedy’s head angle is actually steeper for 2014 than it was for 2013 (67.5 vs 67 degrees).

Trek Remedy 9 27.5 studio-11

We’ll say it now and get it off our chest. The Remedy’s handlebar is too narrow – it constricts this bike, and feels about five years out of date. In Trek’s defence, the only reason they supply the bike with this bar is because of some outdated Australian standards that stipulate a bike can’t have a bar over 700mm wide! So actually, every other brand is technically in the wrong from a legality perspective. Whatever the case, we fitted a 745mm bar to the very neat 70mm Bontrager Rhythm stem and felt much better.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5-22

Trek kicked their product development team into overdrive and managed to develop new Bontrager 27.5″ wheels and tyres for the Remedy, and both items are really top notch. The Bontrager Rhythm wheelset and XR3 tyre combo is great. The tyres a massive for a claimed 2.35″ width and we rate their consistently grippy and fast-rolling tread pattern as one of our favourites. Our test bike was set up tubeless with Bontrager’s own plastic rim strips installed. These don’t come with the bike ordinarily, but Trek dealers can supply them. Other standout Bontrager items are the Evoke saddle (this tester’s favourite) and Rhythm grips.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5-16

Shimano’s XT drivetrain and brakes are the pick for the Remedy 9. The 2×10 drivetrain and clutch derailleur is precise, quiet and gave us mercifully low gears when climbing big hills with a heavy pack in the Snowy Mountains. Of course, there are ISCG mounts if you’d rather a single ring.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5 studio-12

We had a weird recurring issue with the brakes on our test bike; the pads would appear contaminated (lacking power and making lots of noise) when we first hopped on the bike after not riding it for a week or so. After a couple of minutes of riding, they had come good again and the power was back to normal… Strange! We can only assume it was either some minor oil seepage, salt air or ghosts. Probably the latter. Regardless, Trek and Shimano assure us they’ve not had it happen on any other 2014 model bikes and the XT brakes are generally amongst the best out there.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5-15

Rounding out the package is a RockShox Reverb Stealth post with 125mm of adjustability. The handlebar is rather cluttered – it would’ve been nice touch if Trek had opted to utilise Shimano’s I-Spec combined shifter/brake mounts to tidy up the cockpit.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5 studio-17

The Remedy is engaging, fun and lively ride. That’s a feeling that we’ve always found with Trek’s Remedy range, and we’re glad the addition of slightly bigger wheels haven’t dumbed down this playfulness at all. In fact, the bigger wheel size really slipped out of view on the trail. This isn’t to say that there aren’t benefits to be found with the slightly larger 27.5″ wheel when compared to a 26er, just that there aren’t any obvious negative traits to leave us wishing for a smaller wheel once again.

D77_1001

Trek’s ABP / Full Floater suspension is one of the best. It’s a superbly responsive system, it just ripples over the terrain, soaking up the little bumps like they’re not even there. Factor in the large volume tyres and you’ve got one very smooth ride indeed. The FOX 34 fork is a worth accompaniment as well, though we did find the rear suspension outshone the front in terms of sheer sensitivity. In the dusty test conditions, we liked to apply a small amount of suspension Teflon spray to the fork legs before each ride to help keep the fork slick and smooth like the rear end.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5-11

There’s very little anti-squat built into the Trek’s suspension curve, which does mean it’s prone to suspension bobbing if you mash the pedals and it can wallow a little on steeper, technical climbs. The upside to this is that the Trek has negligible pedal feedback when pedalling over rough terrain, making it easy to stay on the gas, and there is mountain of rear wheel grip because the chain isn’t causing the suspension to stiffen. Of course, there’s always the shock’s CTD adjustment if you want to firm things up for more efficiency, and running the FOX shock in its middle Trail setting goes a long way to removing all pedal induced bob at the slight expense of some of that silky small bump compliance.

D77_0433

One of the clear areas that demonstrates Trek have listened to the public and the media’s feedback is the fork choice on the new Remedy. In 2013, the Remedy had a FOX 32 fork which lacked the stiffness to really make the most of the bike’s descending potential. For 2014, Trek have gone for FOX 34 it makes a world of difference. What is pretty amazing, is that even though the 2014 Remedy has both steeper geometry and less travel than it did in 2013, it descends even better. The fork stiffness, along with the bigger wheels, surely play a part in the this. We particularly appreciated the beefier fork on the really big hits; the stiffer chassis helps avoid any binding or spiking and allows the fork to keep up with the bottomless rear suspension feel delivered by the DRCV rear shock.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5-4

We felt really comfortable descending on the Remedy from the very outset. One of our favourite test trails features some steep, swooping chutes/gullies, the bottom of which is littered with loose, sliding pieces of rock. We have a standout memory of just how composed the Remedy felt tackling this bit of trail; even when hard on the brakes, with both wheels sliding around, the Remedy left us feeling like we were in total control, with time up our sleeve to negotiate the next drop or corner.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5-27

On less extreme terrain, the Remedy doesn’t feel like overkill. In fact, we were distinctly reminded of our time on board the Fuel EX 9.8 26er (still one of our favourite all-time bikes). It feels flickable and fun, pouncing on the next bit of trail rather than flopping from corner to corner, and the low slung top tube encourages you to move the bike about.

Trek Remedy 9 27.5-30

Rider: Chris Southwood

Gooseberry Mesa is a heck of a testing ground, and the Remedy responded beautifully. On the slickrock playground sections at Bowls and Ledges*, I could lower the post and roll drops that might have scared me on a smaller bike. It was fast and grippy on the singletrack sections and overall was a very light-feeling and playful bike, with all the capabilities advertised by its 140mm of travel. —Joe Lindsey

Does F1-inspired suspension bring benefits to mountain biking?

  • Tweaking the geometry and getting the most from an already good bike

  • My first Remedy crash, OTB when the front wheel got hooked up in a corner

Trek Remedy 9 29 longterm Jamie riding

What attracted you to the Trek Remedy 9 29?

The colour, the fact it cost more than my car, and the stunning array of technology firsts from Trek. Plus-size bikes are spreading Boost 148 hub popularity far and wide, but the Remedy got there first, with its ultra-wide back end and stiffer rear wheel.

Then there’s the new RE:aktiv shock, designed with Fox and US race-car engineers Penske to give more pedalling support and still offer a plush feel for maximum grip. The Holy Grail?

Trek Remedy 9 29 car park

Did you change anything straightaway?

It’s so long ago, memory fails me, but a close look at the photos from my first report, back in May, show something alarming — a saddle pack slung underneath the seat , presumably holding tools. The shame of it; ruining the Trek’s lines with that monstrosity.

I swapped the dry tyres for muds a few weeks later, fitted a wider bar and shorter stem and added a mudguard that I’ve never had cause to remove.

Trek Remedy 9 29 stem 2015

Was the bike easy to set up?

Yes, initially. You have to cycle the shock through at least 50 per cent travel when setting it up to ensure air gets into its second DRCV chamber, but that’s the only difference from a regular full-sus configuration — set the sag to 30 per cent and go riding. The hard work came later.

Trek Remedy 9 29 re-aktiv suspension

How did it ride?

The RE:aktiv shock didn’t deliver on its promise. I mean that in a good way, the Remedy doesn’t have the pedalling platform it boasts of, but I really couldn’t give a flying lump of mud — the suspension is incredibly sensitive and it makes the bike feel exciting, full of pop and brilliantly fast.

It’s very active on climbs though, so I’d flip the blue lever to climb mode, where you can actually hear the tick of the valve inside the shock opening and closing as you pedal.

Watch how to fit offset hardware

The bottom bracket is too high to really feel comfortable at speed though, so I set about lowering the bike with offset shock hardware.

And if a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well, I thought, so I added angled cups too and slackened the head angle to 65 degrees. I’m left with a long, low and slack trail bike that feels brilliant.

Jamie, longtermer offset hardware

Did anything break or wear out?

No, it’s so sturdy it feels unbreakable. You wouldn’t expect breakages on this top-end equipment either.

If you could change one thing about your longtermer what would it be?

Trek fits an increased offset fork to the Remedy, and I think the idea is to make the steering quicker. That’s bad in my book though, I want it slow and controlled, so I’d do away with that and fit a Pike with regular offset.

Trek Remedy 9 29 riding 2 Jamie

Would you buy this bike and why?

Six months ago, half way through the test, I’d have said no. But now I’ve worked out how easy and cheap it is to sort the Remedy, I’ve got to say yes. The bike’s a lot of money but it’s worth it: light, stiff and brilliant. The colour’s too garish for me though.
