Is the 2023 Mini Cooper a Good Car?

The 2023 Mini Cooper is a good subcompact car for the most part. The Mini is available in hatchback and convertible body styles, and it's a blast to pilot on winding roads, thanks to its poised handling, playful steering and lineup of zippy turbocharged engines. Choices range from a spry 134-horsepower three-cylinder to a pair of zesty 189- and 228-horsepower four-cylinders. The Mini's interior is upscale, and it's complemented by an intuitive touch-screen infotainment system and a variety of active safety features. The front seats are quite comfy as well.

That said, this Mini has some significant trade-offs. The Mini Cooper is rather pricey for such a small car, it doesn't offer much back-seat space, and its firm ride can be aggravating on rough road surfaces.

Should I Buy the 2023 Mini Cooper?

The Mini Cooper is worth a look if you're shopping for a sporty small car, but it isn't exactly a top pick next to more refined rivals like the Honda Civic and Mazda3 . Both can match the Mini's fun-to-drive persona, but they offer better practicality, a lower price point and longer warranty coverage. Give those models a look first.

We review the all-electric Mini Cooper SE separately.

2022 vs. 2023 Mini Cooper: What's the Difference?

The 2023 Mini Cooper gains Apple CarPlay as a standard feature. Otherwise, there aren't any major differences between the 2022 and 2023 models.

Compare the 2022 and 2023 Mini Cooper »

Here are the key changes for the Mini Cooper over the last few years:

  • 2023: standard Apple CarPlay
  • 2022: updated exterior and interior styling; 8.8-inch touch screen, digital gauge cluster, satellite radio and lane-departure warning join standard features list
  • 2021: manual transmission reintroduced
  • 2020: manual transmission discontinued; forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking became standard
  • 2019: Apple CarPlay and wireless device charging made available

How Much is a 2023 MINI Cooper?

The 2023 Mini Cooper has a base MSRP of $23,400 for two-door hardtop models, $24,400 for four-door hardtop models and $28,400 for convertible models. This entry-level model is equipped with a three-cylinder engine that produces 134 horsepower. The midrange Cooper S starts at $26,900 for two-door hardtop models ($27,900 and $31,900 for four-door and convertible models, respectively), and this trim adds a 189-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The top John Cooper Works trim is priced at $32,900 for two-door models ($38,900 for convertibles), and it cranks this engine up to 228 horsepower.

Which Is the Best Mini Cooper Model to Buy?

We'd suggest opting for the Cooper S model in whichever body style you prefer. The Cooper S's additional horsepower makes it a lot quicker and fun-to-drive than the somewhat leisurely base model, and its higher price tag seems like a worthwhile upcharge.

2023 Mini Cooper Versus the Competition

Mini hardtop vs. mini clubman.

The Mini Clubman almost looks like a stretched version of the four-door Mini Cooper, and in some ways it is. Both models have similar styling inside and out, as well as many of the same safety and convenience features. However, the Clubman offers available all-wheel drive, a roomier back seat and additional cargo space that is accessed via barn doors (instead of the typical rear liftgate). It also offers a brawnier 301-horsepower engine option. So what's the downside to this practicality? The Clubman costs thousands of dollars more than its Mini Cooper hardtop sibling.

Compare the Mini Hardtop and Clubman »

Mini Hardtop vs. Mini Countryman

It's a similar story with the Mini Countryman . The Countryman tops the Mini Cooper hardtop in terms of its extra seating space, cargo room, available all-wheel-drive and wider variety of engine options (including a plug-in-hybrid model). But it also costs a lot more than the Mini hardtop, and its additional size and weight translate to duller handling. As above, the right pick for you will likely boil down to price or personal preference.

Mini Cooper Interior: Keeping It Cozy

2023 mini cooper interior quality.

One of the Mini Cooper's charms is its distinctive interior styling. The dashboard is anchored by a large LED light ring that encircles the infotainment touch screen, and it's accented with a sleek digital gauge cluster, retro-inspired toggle switches and chunky climate control knobs. There's nothing quite like it on the market, apart from other Mini vehicles. The cabin feels sturdy as well, and the materials are generally upscale with an even mix of hard- and soft-touch plastics.

2023 Mini Cooper Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation

The 2023 Mini Cooper comes standard with an 8.8-inch touch-screen infotainment system. This system is essentially a reskinned version of BMW's iDrive interface, and it offers crisp graphics, intuitive menus and quick responses. There are additional buttons and knobs on the center stack, making it a breeze to adjust the audio and climate controls while driving. The touch screen can also be controlled by a knob on the center console, but its low placement makes it awkward to use. Apple CarPlay comes standard, but Android Auto isn't supported.

  • Standard infotainment features: an 8.8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, a USB port, HD Radio, satellite radio and a six-speaker stereo
  • Available infotainment features: navigation, wireless device charging and a 12-speaker stereo
  • Additional standard features: a digital gauge cluster and remote keyless entry
  • Other available features: dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, ambient lighting and a panoramic moonroof

For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay? and What Is Android Auto?

Mini Cooper Cargo Space

The Mini Cooper hardtop models offer moderate but usable cargo space. The two-door hardtop has 8.7 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 34 cubic feet with these seats folded. These measurements climb to 13.1 and 40.7 cubic feet, respectively, for the four-door hardtop. That's enough room for a large haul of groceries or the occasional bulky item, like a couple of moving boxes. Still, the Mini's cargo capacity falls short of other hatchbacks like the Honda Civic and Mazda3 .

The Mini Cooper convertible is especially stingy in this area. It offers just 7.6 cubic feet of trunk space with its top up and a mere 5.7 cubes with the top down. Even stowing a pair of carry-on bags can be a challenge.

How Many People Does the 2023 Mini Cooper Seat?

The Mini Cooper is available in two-door hardtop, four-door hardtop and two-door convertible body styles. The two-door models have four seats, and the four-door model has five seats. Synthetic leather upholstery and manually adjustable front seats are standard. Options include genuine leather upholstery, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

The Mini's front seats are quite comfortable and supportive, regardless of body style, and there's sufficient space for taller drivers and passengers to stretch out. It's a different story in the back though. Smaller adults can squeeze into the four-door model's back seat, but they aren't apt to be comfortable because of the snug legroom and upright seatbacks. Worse still, the two-door's rear seats are so cramped that even kids may find them too confining for anything other than a quick trip.

Outward visibility is fair to the front and sides of the Mini, but rear visibility is slim, especially in convertible models because the power-retractable soft top folds down and rests on the trunk lid. Road and wind noise intrusion is pronounced as well.

There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for this Mini’s rear seats.

2023 Mini Cooper Performance: Small Size, Big Fun

Mini cooper engine.

The 2023 Mini Cooper has three engine options: a 134-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder (Cooper), a 189-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder (Cooper S), and an uprated 228-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder (John Cooper Works). Each comes with a six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive as standard. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is offered in the Cooper and Cooper S models, while a conventional eight-speed automatic is available in the JCW.

The base three-cylinder engine should be perfectly adequate for most shoppers. It enables peppy off-the-line acceleration and supplies ample thrust around town, but that muscle starts to wane at higher speeds. Zero to 60 mph takes a reasonable eight seconds. For more punch, upgrade to the Cooper S. This four-cylinder hauls the Mini up to speed with authority – zero to 60 mph takes 6.5 seconds – and it provides quick throttle response and robust passing power. The swift JCW model ups the ante, albeit not enough to justify its loftier price tag.

The manual transmission is a joy to shift, thanks to its short throws, precise engagement and forgiving clutch. The seven- and eight-speed automatics both impress with their smooth and prompt gear changes.

2023 Mini Cooper Gas Mileage

The Mini Cooper gets unremarkable fuel economy by subcompact car standards, but it's quite thrifty compared to sport compacts like the Volkswagen GTI , Subaru WRX and Hyundai Veloster N .

The base Cooper model gets an EPA-rated 29 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway when paired with the automatic transmission and 27/37 mpg with the manual. The Cooper S is rated at up to 28/38 mpg city/highway with the automatic and 23/33 mpg with the manual, and the Mini JCW nets up to 25/34 mpg with the automatic and 22/31 mpg with the manual.

2023 Mini Cooper Ride and Handling

The Mini Cooper's greatest asset is arguably its lithe handling. Its suspension is taut and allows the Mini to carve through turns with impeccable body control. The steering is precise and nicely weighted, and the strong brakes haul the Mini to a stop confidently. The trade-off, however, is that the Mini's ride can be pretty harsh on uneven pavement. Bumps and potholes tend to jostle the car around violently. This is especially true for the John Cooper Works as well as models optioned with the 17- and 18-inch wheels. An adaptive suspension is available, but it doesn't seem to tighten the car's handling or relax its ride to a discernible degree.

2023 Mini Cooper Dimensions and Weight

The two-door Mini hardtop and convertible are 12.7 feet long, while the four-door Mini hardtop is slightly longer at 13.3 feet. The Mini Cooper's curb weight ranges from 2,711 to 3,143 pounds.

Where Is the 2023 Mini Cooper Built?

The 2023 Mini Cooper is built in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

2023 Mini Cooper Models and Trims

The 2023 Mini Cooper comes in a variety of configurations. First, there are three trims – Classic, Signature and Iconic – which determine the car's standard features. Next, there are three body styles: two-door hardtop, four-door hardtop and two-door convertible. Lastly, there are three engine options: the 134-horsepower Cooper, 189-horsepower Cooper S and 228-horsepower John Cooper Works (or JCW for short).

These configurations are mix-and-match for the most part. Additionally, Mini offers a range of optional paint and upholstery colors, exterior graphics and wheel designs, allowing you to customize the car to the nth degree. Just keep an eye on the price tag. The Mini Cooper can get luxury-car expensive in a jiffy.

Mini also makes the all-electric Mini Cooper SE , which we review separately.

Mini Cooper Classic

The entry-level Mini Cooper Classic has a base price of $23,400 for the two-door hardtop. The four-door hardtop and two-door convertible start at $24,400 and $28,400, respectively. Each is outfitted with a 134-horsepower turbocharged three-cylinder engine, a manual transmission and front-wheel drive.

Standard features include a digital gauge cluster, an 8.8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, HD Radio, satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, a USB port, remote keyless entry, synthetic leather upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, LED headlights, 15-inch wheels and a power-folding soft top (convertibles).

Upgrading to the Cooper S costs $3,500, regardless of body style, and it sports a 189-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The John Cooper Works variant is $6,000 to $7,000 on top of that, and it features a 228-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, bigger wheels and brakes, a stiffer sport-tuned suspension and front seats with larger side bolsters.

Mini Cooper Signature

The uplevel Mini Cooper Signature adds heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, ambient lighting, a moonroof (hardtop only) and 16-inch wheels. Prices start at $27,400 for the two-door hardtop, $28,400 for the four-door hardtop and $32,400 for the convertible. As before, upgrading to the punchier Cooper S engine costs about $3,500, while the higher-powered John Cooper Works engine is an extra $5,000.

Available features include navigation, wireless device charging, a 12-speaker stereo, genuine leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, hands-free parking assist and an adaptive suspension (Dynamic Damper Control).

Mini Cooper Iconic

The posh Mini Cooper Iconic trim adds genuine leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, navigation, wireless device charging, a 12-speaker stereo, a head-up display and 17-inch wheels. Most options carry over unchanged.

Prices start at $31,400 for the two-door hardtop, $32,400 for the four-door hardtop and $36,400 for the convertible. Once again, upgrading to the Cooper S engine costs about $3,500, while the JCW engine is an additional $5,000.

  • "The 2023 Mini Cooper lineup of subcompact hatchback and convertible body styles features some of the most entertaining and enjoyable cars available to buyers who don’t have the funds for a Porsche — which is most of us. 2023 Mini lineup gets smarter, more colorful

Pricing stays relatively flat.

2023 mini cooper cruise control

Mini has already announced the changes it's making to its line-up for the 2023 model year. The numerous special-edition models that it unveiled in February 2022 will be joined by new exterior colors , additional upholstery options and more available driving aids.

While a completely new version of the Hardtop is on its way, the current-generation model will return for 2023 — it might be its final model year. Buyers who select the Signature or the Iconic version of the Cooper S or the John Cooper Works can order Zesty Yellow, which is an eye-catching color that was inaugurated by the 2022 Convertible . Multi-tone roof options are also available on the aforementioned variants.

The electric SE 's Signature and Iconic trim levels can be ordered in Island Blue, while Rooftop Gray leaves the palette. And, the Iconic trim level can be configured with Cloth Leatherette Black Pearl, Cloth Leatherette Black Pearl Light Checkered and Chesterfield Leather Malt Brown upholsteries. Mini notes that this is the first time it offers the Chesterfield Leather Malt Brown option on the battery-powered Hardtop .

Park Assist and a head-up display join the list of features included in the Driver Assistance package, while adaptive cruise control is now a standalone option. In turn, this makes the Driver Assistance Package available regardless of whether buyers get a stick or an automatic, because adaptive cruise control isn't compatible with the manual transmission. And, yes: the stick shift is sticking around for 2023.

Similar changes apply to the Clubman and the Countryman . The former is available with the same multi-tone roof option as the Hardtop and with the Driver Assistance Package regardless of transmission type, and the Driver Assistance package offered on both models gains Park Assist and a head-up display. Finally, the space-saver spare tire is exclusively offered as a standalone options on both bigger Mini models.

Pricing for the 2023 model year stays relatively flat, which is a nice surprise. The only exceptions are the Cooper variants of the Hardtop, the Convertible and the Countryman , which cost $500 more than they did in 2022. Pricing for the full range, including Mini's $850 destination fee, is as follows:

  • Cooper Hardtop two-door ($24,250)
  • Cooper S Hardtop two-door ($27,750)
  • Cooper SE Hardtop ($30,750)
  • John Cooper Works Hardtop ($33,750)
  • Cooper Hardtop four-door ($25,250)
  • Cooper S Hardtop four-door ($28,750)
  • Cooper Convertible ($29,250)
  • Cooper S Convertible ($32,750)
  • John Cooper Works Convertible ($39,750)
  • Cooper S Clubman ($30,750)
  • Cooper S All4 Clubman ($33,750)
  • John Cooper Works Clubman All4 ($40,350)
  • Cooper Countryman ($30,450)
  • Cooper Countryman All4 ($32,800)
  • Cooper S Countryman ($32,750)
  • Cooper S Countryman All4 ($34,750)
  • Cooper SE Countryman All4 ($42,350)
  • John Cooper Works Countryman All4 ($42,350)

Note that All4 is Mini-speak for all-wheel-drive. The BMW-owned firm will begin building its 2023 models in March 2022.

2023 Mini Cooper SE: Cute City Car Constantly Charging

Deputy Editor

The 2023 Mini Cooper SE is and electric version of the two-door Cooper S. It looks and feels much like its gas-powered counterpart, but has a hefty battery weighing it down and $2,000 higher starting price. The extra 300-pounds of battery heft doesn’t really hurt handling, but it also doesn’t equate to an exceptionally long range. The SE only makes it 114 miles on a charge. As on the regular two-door Mini, tiny cargo space and practically nonexistent backseat mean this is a city car for short trips and two passengers, even if there are four seats.

After some visual changes across the Mini lineup last year, the 2023 model is essentially unchanged, but a new generation is expected for 2024. In the meantime, buyers can look for new paint and roof colors, along with different interior options. The starting price is also bumped up across the two trim levels: Signature 2.0 (base) and Iconic 2.0. The non-electric Mini Cooper Hardtop , which also offers a four-door body, is reviewed separately.

While there aren’t any other EVs quite this small, the SE competes with an assortment of more affordable, smaller electrics like the basic Nissan Leaf , Chevy Bolt EV and Hyundai Kona EV . The Mazda MX-30 , similarly range-challenged, offers a bigger footprint than the SE’s but is arguably less practical. Like the regular gas-powered Mini hardtop the SE is small, but with the backseats down it offers impressive cargo space for its tiny footprint. With 181 horsepower from a single electric motor on the front wheels, the SE does a fair job of keeping up with the gas-powered Cooper S, but the extra weight means the SE is a tad slower.

2023 mini cooper cruise control

The base Signature Trim 2.0 with a $34,225 (including destination fee) starting price includes premium options like heated seats and a panoramic moonroof. The $2,475 Iconic Trim 2.0 adds a head-up display, parking assistance, improved audio system and better traffic data for a $36,700 package. Last year buyers could expect a fat tax break that reduced these prices below their gasoline-powered equivalents, but the rollback of most federal EV tax credits means that’s no longer the case, eroding some of the Cooper SE’s value proposition.

Compared to its larger rivals, it’s a harsher ride in the low-lying, sporty-feeling SE, but the instant torque keeps things moving quickly when stepping away from stop signs and on entering the freeway. But some missing tech and safety features (blind spot monitoring and Android Auto are missing even at top trims) are odd in what isn’t a dheap car. The tiny back seat and small trunk space make this a two-person vehicle; as mentioned previously, the cargo space grows substantially with the backseats down and makes for a handy hauler.

The price increase and limited availability for 2023 can be frustrating for anyone seeking an affordable electric car , but the entire EV industry is experiencing similar issues. It might be worth the wait for a revamped electric Mini in 2024. But if time is of the essence, most safety and tech features are part of the top-tier Iconic trim, so it’s best to go for the top package on the SE.

2023 mini cooper cruise control

Performance: 13/15

The Mini SE’s 32.6 kWh battery and front-mounted electric motor produces 181 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. The different driving modes, Sport, Mid, Green and Green+, increasingly add drag onto the regenerative braking, and it’s almost too much on the higher levels. The top speed is limited to 93 mph to help preserve battery life.

It reaches 60 mph in a claimed 6.9 seconds, which isn’t the slowest of the two-door Coopers, but it’s a heavier car at over 3,000 pounds. The instant torque on the electric motor makes up for any sluggishness. It feels as zippy as a gas-powered Cooper S but prepare to feel every bump on the road. Those firm dampers help it feel sprightly almost everywhere ( last year we even took one autocrossing ), but the harsh vibes can be taxing on a highway full of broken and potholed pavement.

Range, Energy Use & Charging: 7/15

While the EPA-estimated range is 114 miles, realistically the range is about 100 miles. That’s one of the lowest range options, only better than the bizarrely range-challenged Mazda MX-30 (100-mile official range). The 32.6 kWh battery is tiny, and even the 40 kWh Nissan Leaf ekes out 149 miles. The now-discontinued BMW i3 also had more range for a small car at 153 miles. Most of the smaller EV options, like the Bolt EV and Kona Electric, offer more than twice the useful range of the SE, though none approach larger and pricier EVs like the Tesla Model 3 .

The Mini’s MPGe (EPA-rated miles per gallon equivalent) rating is 110, close to the Leaf’s 111 MPGe, but it trails behind the bigger Bolt EV and Kona Electric options (both 120 MPGe). In city driving it shines at 119 MPGe.

At least the SE is mostly as efficient as other lower-range options, using 31 kWh per 100 miles. The average is 34 kWh/100 miles, but that includes much bigger vehicles, both battery and otherwise. The two levels of regenerative braking can help extend time between charging, though the battery’s small size means doesn’t take too long to recharge. At DC fast charging stations (not at home or at Level 2 chargers) it can get to 80% full in 36 minutes.

Safety & Driver Assistance Tech: 8/15

The SE feels particularly small next to most SUVs and crossovers, which isn’t comforting. But its extra heft as an EV (for the car’s teensy 151.7 inch length) makes it feel well grounded. It receives “Good” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a four-star out of five overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), though the agencies don’t test the SE separately from the regular hardtop.

More standard safety features would alleviate small-car worries, and there’s weirdly no blind spot monitoring even when fully loaded on the Iconic trim level. The head-up display on the highest package is helpful to keep eyes on the road. Standard safety features include forward collision, pedestrian and lane departure warnings and automatic high beam and headlight assistance. Most small cars, EV or otherwise, come with a more robust standard safety suite.

2023 mini cooper cruise control

Comfort & Room: 8/15

The SE is not a plush, cozy car, but it offers supportive enough seating up front. There’s enough room up front even for most tall folks, but any backseat passengers over the age of 10 are going to be cramped and uncomfortable. There’s ample front leg and headroom, although the seats are a bit too rigid and it’s hard to reach the touchscreen and knobs to change driving modes and other settings.

In the backseat, there are only 30.8 inches of legroom to “stretch” out. Complicating matters, it’s hard to simply get in the back, and once there it’s not an enjoyable experience. Other small EVs like the Bolt EV and Leaf are more spacious in the back with as much as 6 more inches. Mini makes a more spacious four-door model and its Clubman wagon , but neither are offered as electric vehicles.

Infotainment: 10/15

The Mini runs a version of BMW’s iDrive system which uses a dial controller, steering wheel controls or the touchscreen. The menu experience is in dire need of an update, especially the navigation display. All the information is there, but it’s a throwback to early mapping apps. The head-up display is optional but with the terrible graphics on-screen, it’s almost a must-have feature.

Curiously, there’s no Android Auto but Apple CarPlay comes standard. The LED frame around the circular 8.8-inch touchscreen looks fun and modern at first glance, but it’s more distracting than useful when it lights up while driving.

The SE is good at maintaining a physical presence thanks to the trademark toggle switches, which turn on different drive modes or regen braking levels. It makes it feel like you’re in a cockpit, in a good way.

2023 mini cooper cruise control

Cargo Space & Storage: 9/15

The SE is half an inch shorter in length than the original two-door hardtop, so don’t expect any packing miracles here. Cargo space behind the rear seats is grocery-run small at 8.7 cubic-feet, but with the back seats down it grows to 34 cubes, enough to carry a short surfboard loaded through the front seats and almost as much as a Volkswagen GTI . Impressive for a tiny thing. There is no frunk (front trunk), so charging cables need to go into a compartment in the trunk floor.

Compared to other small cars it doesn’t dazzle but it’s not pathetic: the Kona goes up to 45.8 cubic-feet total, while the larger Leaf is smaller at 30 total cubes when it comes to cargo space. The Bolt EV dominates the segment with a monstrous 57 cubes of total cargo capacity.

Style & Design: 9/10

The Mini Cooper SE is as cute and rounded as any modern Mini, but its interior design is a strange mishmash of past and present. Hopefully, a 2024 redesign will bring the funky but cool circular center screen further into the 21st century and streamline its look. The new multitone roofs and paint colors spice up otherwise stagnant options.

The Union Jack taillights are still a fun Easter egg and liven up the car, which can feel like a stripped-down BMW. Its small size and sporty character make it a unique machine among EVs and preserve all the traits Mini owners seem to prioritize. The Bolt EV and Nissan Leaf feel much plainer and appliance-like in comparison. There’s very little to indicate this is an electric version of the Cooper S other than the SE badge and charging port, so there’s no need to adapt to any weird futuristic-EV style, but not much to separate it from the gas version either.

2023 mini cooper cruise control

Is the 2023 Mini Cooper SE Worth it? Which Mini Cooper SE is the Best Value?

The base Signature Trim 2.0 ($34,225 starting price) is a fairly barebones offering but heated seats and a panoramic moonroof are standard along with some basic safety features. For the head-up display, parking assistance, improved audio system and better traffic data the $2,475 Iconic Trim 2.0 is worth the upgrade (totaling $36,700). If color and interior options are a priority, many choices are only available on the upper trim. Most safety and tech features are part of the Iconic group, so it’s best to go for the top package on the SE.

If looking for something different with bonnet stripes and 18-inch black spoke wheels, check out the Resolute Special edition painted in “Rebel Green” for $37,700.

As a second car or occasional-use city car, the SE is a fun choice that offers the same vivid personality as the gas-powered Minis. But for regular use and road trips, look elsewhere. For a more efficient machine, other somewhat bigger EVs are a better value. But you won’t find the British quirks and Mini Cooper looks anywhere else.

All Mini Coopers across the lineup now come with a “limited production warning,” thanks to supply chain disruptions, so expect long waits to receive a new SE.

How Much Does it Cost to Insure the 2023 Mini Cooper SE?

The Mini Cooper SE should cost a little less to insure than most of its peers. According to our data, a typical 30-year-old female driver with a clean record can expect an average annual premium of around $1,930, though this averages all 50 states. This is slightly less than a gasoline-powered Mini Cooper S’s expected premium. A Nissan Leaf owner might pay $2,100 per year, while the Hyundai Kona Electric is around $1,880 and the smaller Chevy Bolt EV is $2,060. Russia Maps Show 25% of Moscow Without Power Amid Winter Freeze 'Emergency'

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the nationalization of an ammunition plant in Moscow after a mechanical failure caused tens of thousands of Muscovites to lose heat and water amid freezing temperatures beginning last week.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes in the Moscow region amid subzero temperatures.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino are also without power.

That means that in total, more than a quarter of Moscow's cities have been hit with power outages and a lack of heating.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment via email.

Many residents have taken to publishing video appeals on social media to complain about their freezing conditions. In one clip, people living in Moscow say that they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters, and "whatever else we can find." Others said they are lighting fires in the streets to keep warm.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, announced on Tuesday that Putin ordered the ammunition plant to be nationalized because two of its owners have been "located abroad." He didn't name the individuals.

"We received the right to take control of this boiler house within the framework of an emergency," Vorobiev said, adding that the plant's boiler room was managed "very poorly" and there was "virtually no qualified competent personnel."

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case over Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant not meeting safety requirements.

On Tuesday, the committee said that because of the incident, the deputy head of Podolsk's administration, the head of the plant's boiler house, and the general director of the ammunition plant had been detained.

Residents of Selyatino have described the situation as "some kind of struggle for survival," Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported.

Power outages have also struck St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Primorsky Territory, and Yekaterinburg.

Refuelling underway at Russia’s floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

2023 mini cooper cruise control

The fresh fuel cassettes were delivered to Pevek by in special shipping containers along the Northern Sea Route in October by Rosatom’s fuel company TVEL and were immediately transferred aboard the FNPP. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov, is the Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - part of TVEL) in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The loading of fresh fuel cassettes is being carried out into the reactor on the starboard side of the FNPP. Refuelling of the second reactor is planned for 2024. “When carrying out work to transship the nuclear fuel, all necessary measures were taken to meet radiation safety requirements,” said Alexey Fedotov, chief engineer at PATEC. “Before loading them into the reactor, each of the 121 fuel assemblies passed strict acceptance control. After a thorough check by specialists, all assemblies are sequentially placed in the reactor using automated crane equipment.” The reloading operation is planned to be completed before the end of this year. Maxim Shamambaev, the head of nuclear safety for the FNPP, said the radiation background in the region did not change during the work and remained at the natural background level for Pevek.

The installation of the FNPP in Chukotka aimed to solve two key problems. First it was to replace the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which began operating in1974, as well as the Chaunskaya thermal power plant, which is already more than 70 years old. Second, it was to supply energy to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka - a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimskaya ore zone.

By the end of 2023, power generation to Pevek from the FNPP since it began operation in 2020 will total 200 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000.

2023 mini cooper cruise control

2023 mini cooper cruise control

2023 mini cooper cruise control

Select a year

  • Lows Less practical than other subcompact SUVs, fails Mini's fun-driving mission, some driver assists are notably absent.
  • Verdict What the Mini Countryman gains in size and practicality it gives up in terms of agility and quickness.

The 2023 Mini Cooper Countryman's plus-size proportions—plus-size for Mini, that is—make it more useful than most other Mini models, which are more suited handling two passengers. While we think its increased dimensions and extra mass diminish the fun factor–one of the brand's defining traits–we acknowledge that the Countryman’s larger size probably appeals to a wider audience than its smaller siblings. This is the maxi-Mini: it has a big back seat and a goodly amount of cargo space, at least compared with the rest of its family. Power comes from turbocharged three- or four-cylinder engines with either front- or all-wheel drive. Too bad neither provide satisfying thrust. The plug-in hybrid model is easily the quickest, but its higher price tag and increased weight offset its advantages. The 2023 Countryman doesn't embody the Mini ethos, but its distinctive bodywork and well-built interior at least let it look the part.

What's New for 2023?

For 2023, Mini adds a special edition to the Countryman lineup. The new Untamed Edition package is available on the Cooper S and plug-in-hybrid S E models. It wears exclusive Momentum Grey metallic paint and includes unique Frozen Bluestone stripping on the doors. Likewise, a set of two-tone 18-inch wheels pair with a black roof and mirror caps. For additional black exterior accents, Mini offers a Piano Black Exterior option. Inside the Untamed are shades of blue and green that complement the exclusive Highland Green interior as well as special graphics and "Untamed" lettering on various surfaces. There's also a backlit panel on the dashboard that displays a mountain landscape.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2023 Mini Countryman starts at $30,595 and goes up to $42,495 depending on the trim and options.

We recommend the Cooper S for its four-cylinder engine, which provides an extra 55 horsepower over the standard three-cylinder. Every S has 18-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, rear parking sensors, and supportive front seats. Those who want the added traction of all-wheel drive can spec it for $2000. We'd option our Countryman with the mid-level Signature Trim package for its 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and passive entry. The Driver Assistance package, which brings adaptive cruise control and a head-up display, also makes our list.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

2022 mini cooper countryman s phev rear

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The most fuel-efficient Countryman is the plug-in-hybrid Cooper S E, which has a combined EPA rating of 73 MPGe. Among the nonhybrid models, the three-cylinder version is the thriftiest, earning up to 26 mpg city and 33 highway. The more powerful four-cylinder Cooper S achieves up to 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the freeway. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route , the Cooper S Countryman All4 returned a decent 32 mpg. For more information about the Countryman's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Countryman's interior showcases typical Mini design elements, such as an infotainment system set in a large circular housing in the center of the dash and toggle switches for controlling the interior lights, the ignition, and the standard stop-start system. There's a lot to like about the Countryman's cabin, which is assembled from high-quality materials and offers adequate passenger space. Back-seat riders will be comfortable on long trips, but you'll have to pay for the Convenience package if you want a center armrest. The cabin has a number of storage nooks, providing sufficient space for stashing personal items; however, the Countryman offers less cargo room than some smaller competitors. Mini makes up for that with a fair amount of underfloor storage space, but opting for the available spare tire takes up most of that.

2022 mini cooper countryman s phev interior

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Countryman comes standard with a 6.5-inch screen for its infotainment system, and an 8.8-inch display with navigation and Apple CarPlay capability is available. Buyers can control the latter via touch inputs, a console-mounted dial, and voice commands.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

While it comes standard with automated emergency braking, oddly, the Countryman lacks some other common driver-assistance technology , namely blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist. For more information about the Countryman's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Available adaptive cruise control
  • Available self-parking assist

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mini's limited and powertrain warranties are typical. However, the Countryman and its BMW X1 cousin have the best corrosion coverage and included scheduled maintenance in their class.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles

2023 mini cooper cruise control

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

2023 mini cooper cruise control

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
