“My parents really poured into me”: 17-year-old girl earns 3 degrees in 2 years

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ( WBRC /Gray News) - A 17-year-old girl will graduate from the University of Alabama with her master’s degree.

LeAnna Roberts said she decided long ago that she wanted to do well in academics. She also credits her parents as a big part of her success.

“I would say I am surprised. Looking back four years ago when I was in high school, I would have never imagined, never saw this in the cards myself,” said Roberts.

Roberts graduated from high school at 15 years old, and on that same day, she earned an associate’s degree in science from Shelton State Community College, WBRC reported.

“When I started my 9th grade year, I knew I wanted a challenge and I began to take dual enrollment courses at Shelton State Community College.”

She didn’t stop there.

Roberts also earned her undergrad degree in biology at 16 years old. And on Saturday, she will walk on stage and receive another degree.

This time she’s receiving a master’s in business administration with a healthcare management concentration, WBRC reported.

“From an early age, my parents really poured into me. I always had a love for reading, learning, and science. I was a very inquisitive child,” said Roberts.

Roberts said she plans to graduate with her second Master’s in 2025.

After that, she’s off to medical school.

A  study conducted in 2020  by the World Health Organization determined that these long work hours can be unhealthy and  taking a vacation  or going away on a road trip can do wonders for both physical and mental health.

But what are some good getaways within a three-hour drive from New York City?

The Catskills (2 Hours by Car)

The Catskills are a mountain range in southeastern New York. It is most known for its nature preserve, wildlife, hiking trails, ski resorts, and more. It is a perfect place to get some fresh air outside of the city.

Even though it’s only 2 hours away, because it’s a rocky terrain, choosing a truck over a city car would be a smart step; after all,  pickup trucks can handle dirt roads  better. In the summer months, there are incredible  trails to hike or bike on  with beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes.

Such spots as Kaaterskill Falls and Sunset Rock are very popular spots due to their natural beauty. There are also a lot of incredible places in the Catskills for swimming with a number of lakes, ponds, creeks, and swimming holes in the area that attract tourists.

The winter months have just as much to offer. In the Catskills, you will find some popular resorts for skiing and snowboarding. There are also opportunities to go snowshoeing through the snowy mountains and woods for some truly incredible and unique views.

Atlantic City (2 Hours by Car)

Atlantic City is a resort city that sits right on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in New Jersey.

What was once a seedy place that most would avoid at all cost, this city has slowly improved itself over the years and is now a glamorous, must-visit on the east coast.

Because the city is still trying to shake off its old, questionable reputation, everything is relatively affordable. Within the city, you will be able to find many different delicious restaurants, incredible spas, lavish hotels, and entertaining casinos.

All at prices that won’t end up breaking the bank. The city also has the world’s oldest boardwalk, which can make for a lovely place for a walk.

Hudson Valley (90 Minutes)

Hudson Valley is a region in New York State that is full of farms, orchards, and wineries. Yes, within 90 minutes of New York City there are over twenty different wineries just waiting to be visited.

Outside of the wineries, the area has a lot of notable restaurants, historic landmarks, gorgeous Estates to enjoy  for down time, art museums, beautiful state parks and nature reserves, world-class farmers markets, and orchards where you can pick your own fruit.

Whatever it is that a person might like to do on a weekend getaway, the Hudson Valley area probably has it.

Take a day trip there, up from the city or stay in one of the area’s fantastic hotels for a whole long weekend and experience all that this beautiful part of New York has to offer.

It can be very beneficial to go on a vacation or getaway, but it can be hard to know where to go and what to do.

Rittenhouse Square is a well-ornamented park and a nice break from the bustle, and you shouldn’t be too cool to go to Independence Hall, where America began. (It’s where the Declaration of Independence was signed and where the Liberty Bell lives.)

Necessary pit stop: Bracket your contempt for Jersey and hit up the Colonial Diner  in Brunswick, NJ to try the fluffy-AF French toast.

4.  Narragansett, RI

168 miles from NYC

Nestled between the eastern bank of the Pettaquamscutt River and the mouth of Narragansett Bay, this shore-side locale boasts three pristine beaches: Scarborough State Beach, Narragansett Town Beach and Roger Wheeler State Beach. If the blank coastline begins to bore you, check out the Point Judith Lighthouse which dates back to 1816.

Necessary pit stop: Stop in Connecticut and munch succulent seafood at Liv’s Oyster Bar  in Saybrook, CT.

5.  Cape Cod, MA

246 miles from NYC

The lure of this sea-worn town is well known—it’s where gentle green dunes meet a rocky shore, the beach is worn by waves and the sunsets look tangerine over a royal-blue Atlantic. If you like to fish, there’s nowhere better: The waters are home to bluefin tuna, striped bass, flounder and fluke and are patrolled by salty curmudgeons wearing yellow slickers and steering wooden skiffs.

Necessary pit stop: Hop off the Interstate and cruise around Providence. Drive past its Venetian-style canals towards College Hill. Stop by Aleppo Sweets , an amazing Syrian bakery and cafe.

6.  Finger Lakes, NYC

256 miles from NYC

The Finger Lakes region can be turned into an even longer trip. Chock full of scenery, hiking, wineries and historic attractions along its 11 beautiful lakes. Visit the Heart & Hands Wine Company and hike in Watkins Glen State Park  (or Robert Treman State Park  to escape the crowds of the latter).

Necessary pit stop: In the tiny town of Roscoe you'll find Roscoe Diner . The vintage joint is known for thick slabs of french toast. 

7.  Lake Placid, NY

290 miles from NYC

The aptly named Lake Placid is a small village that provides a relaxing retreat from urban life. Its big, conifer-covered mountains surround the 122-acre Mirror Lake, around which the town is centered. The high altitudes keep the climate here mild, so you can stay chill even in the dog days of summer and even learn about sports history at the Olympics Center.

Necessary pit stop: Remind yourself that New York City isn’t the state capital (though it arguably should be). Stop at the actual New York State Capital in Albany.

8.  Cape May, NJ

158 miles from NYC

This idyllic resort town on the Jersey Shore is known for grand Victorian houses, historic spots like the Congress Hall hotel and the lovely paved promenade along the beaches. Enjoy a drink at the waterfront bar The Rusty Nail then go for fresh seafood at The Lobster House.

Necessary pit stop: Might as well stop in Atlantic City. You can grab a bite to eat at Tony's Baltimore Grill (yes, get the spaghetti pizza).

9.  Stowe, VT

334 miles from NYC

This sleepy getaway is ripe for outdoor adventure—rich thickets of sugar maple, beech and yellow birch trees surround the town center, which, as is typical of Vermont, is dominated by a towering white church steeple. To get a sense of the surroundings, take a canoe or kayak out on Lake Elmore, the Green River Reservoir or up the Lamoille and Winooski rivers. And every summer, the Stowe Theater Guild   puts together shows to entertain you in the evenings.

Necessary pit stop: If you need a rest stop, drive west to Brattleboro. Whetstone Station serves unique, small batch craft beers alongside inspired food-truck-style favorites.

10.  Saratoga Springs, NY

This town gets its name from an abundance of mineral springs (there are 18), which have attracted spa-seekers since the 19th century. Almost all the springs are naturally carbonated, so we recommend sipping some complimentary Saratoga Sparkling Rosé when bathing in them. The city’s also famous for the Saratoga Race Course  where you can place legal bets. 

Necessary pit stop: Stop in Woodstock and hike up Overlook Mountainin Woodstock for a view of the Hudson River Valley that is seriously worth the two-and-a-half-mile walk.

11.  Alexandria, VA

238 miles from NYC

Cobblestone streets, sidewalk cafés and a generally dreamy attitude endow this small city with a romantic feel. Walk along the pastel-colored buildings on King Street, the main drag in Alexandria’s Old Town, for unique shopping at (mostly) non-franchise boutiques. Then treat your eyes to Torpedo Factory Art Center  which houses 82 artist studios and six galleries, all of which are open to the public.

Necessary pit stop: The Coffee Station  in Garnet Valley, PA serves up diner-food delights in an unpretentious setting: There’s often live music and a mug full of Trivial Pursuit cards on each table.

12.  Bar Harbor, ME

Granite cliffs meet the Atlantic Ocean and Colonial Revival cottages line the quiet streets in this city. Walk along the Shore Path, which hugs the chocolate-box coastline and runs from the Town Pier toward Mountain Desert Island. Then sample something sweet at Mount Desert Island Ice Cream — just look for a bench painted a Victorian-y shade of purple.

Necessary pit stop: Stop in New Hampshire and drink suds at the top-notch Portsmouth Brewery .

13.  Niagara Falls, NY

This tourist attraction and old-timey honeymooner fave is well worth a visit. The seven-hour trip is an exceptionally scenic one, so build in time for stops and hikes. There's a reason tourists flock to Niagara Falls State Park —thunderous falls, mist and plenty of rainbows are unforgettable.

Necessary pit stop:  As you drive through the Catskills, grab a stop on the patio at Yiasou Cafe , a cheerful spot serving a variety of traditional Greek & Mediterranean dishes.

5 Road Trips Under 3 Hours from Dallas You Can Take This Weekend

As much as we all love our weeklong beach trips, sometimes we just don’t have that kind of free time. Lucky for Dallasites, we’re only a short drive away from tons of awesome places that feel as if they’re on a different continent. Here are our five favorite weekend getaways you can escape to in three hours or less

Absolutely Everything to Do in Dallas from Now Until Summer

Mckinney (51 Minutes)

This picturesque town northeast of Dallas is  juuuust  far enough out there that it totally counts as a vacation. Check into the  Grand Hotel  and then stroll down to dinner and drinks at  Harvest . In the morning, grab a cup of coffee at  Snug on the Square  before spending the morning bopping in and out of all the adorable boutiques. If there is no traffic on 75, you just might be able to make it home in half an hour.

Waco (1 Hour, 29 Minutes)

Two words:  Chip and Joanna . Yep, embrace the  Fixer Upper  addict in you by shopping at  Magnolia Market  at the Silos. Post retail therapy, fuel up with a banana-Nutella crepe at  Co-Town Crepes  (they even have gluten-free options) or a bacon, Gouda and basil grilled cheese from  Cheddar Box . And if you plan ahead, you just might score a room at  The Magnolia House . If you have to ask what that is, you don’t watch enough  Fixer Upper.

Tyler (1 Hour, 32 Minutes)

Nicknamed the “Rose Capital of the World,” this is an ideal place to frolic if you fancy the flower. Check into a bungalow at High Hill Farm , where you can relax by the pool before dinner at their restaurant, Côte. A wine tour at Kiepersol Estates is also never a bad idea when in East Texas. Regardless of how you plan to spend your time here, don’t forget to load up with rose bushes on your way home.

Muenster (1 Hour, 41 Minutes)

The Red River Valley is now home to  4R Ranch Vineyards , maker of some of the most delicious Cabs in Texas that you don’t have to drive to Hill Country to enjoy. Head to the Wind Shed tasting room and deck ASAP. Make a weekend out of it by staying at  Elm Creek Manor , a beloved bed-and-breakfast serving up all the meats, vegetables, fruits, eggs, honey and milk produced on its 14 acres.  Mmm .

Possum Kingdom (2 Hours, 44 Minutes)

For those looking for a water-centered escape, PK might be your new BFF. Rent a cabin by the lake and plan to spend your days boating and your evenings in a rocking chair soaking up some unmatched Texas sunsets. Red Bull also holds a killer cliff-diving competition at Hell’s Gate—but don’t worry, it’s just as fun to watch as it is to cliff dive (probably).

Nestled smack dab in the middle of the state, Columbus is near some of the top destinations in Ohio, the Midwest, and even the south. Its convenient location makes visiting the state’s biggest cities and the natural splendor of the Hocking Hills region all the more enticing. Not to mention, Columbus road trippers can reach southern stops in Kentucky and West Virginia around just three hours.

So, the next time you’re free, check out this comprehensive list of the best weekend road trips from Columbus, Ohio.

1. Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio

Hocking Hills State Park is, by and large, Ohio’s most popular state park. Nestled in Southeastern Ohio where the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains meet a lush state forest, it’s not surprising why. Visitors from far and wide flock to relish the park’s dramatic caves, overhanging cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. A weekend at Hocking Hills also offers an opportunity to hike miles of trails, kayak in the river, and zipline through the treetops.

The park is especially popular in the fall when the forest shifts to vibrant shades of yellows, reds, and oranges. Weekend visitors can camp in the state park, where modern and primitive campsites, as well as cabin rentals, stand ready to host. The quaint little town of Logan is less than 20-minutes away and offers plenty of cozy accommodation for Hocking Hills visitors, too.

2. Indianapolis, Indiana

When you think of Indianapolis, the Indy 500 likely comes to mind. But “America’s Crossroads” is an exciting weekend road trip from Columbus with more to offer than fast cars and race tracks (although the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is pretty cool). Meandering through downtown is the idyllic Central Canal, where visitors can enjoy a stroll surrounded by skyline views and greenery.

The White River State Park is five minutes from downtown and offers a scenic area to relax, rent bikes, and cruise on a gondola ride. Foodies who wish to embark on a food tour around the city should make their way to St. Elmo Steak House for a shrimp cocktail and Shapiro’s Delicatessen for their corned beef and pastrami. Indianapolis is conveniently a straight shot from Columbus along highway 70, making the drive a breeze.

3. Cincinnati, Ohio

A visit to the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood is also a must. 4. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Get out of the midwest for a weekend with a trip to Pittsburgh, nicknamed the City of Bridges thanks to the nearly 450 that cross the three large rivers that meet downtown. Although the Steelers and Pirates dominate the local culture, this sporty city boasts pursuits and outdoor fun that lie outside of the sports arena. For example, visitors can rent bikes and ride along the North Shore Bike Trail , which passes through North Shore Riverfront Park where picture-perfect city views await.

Art enthusiasts should make time to see works by famed Pittsburgh native Andy Warhol at the Andy Warhol Museum . Another excellent way to get acquainted with the city is with a ride on the Belle of Louisville, a traditional steamboat that takes visitors down the Ohio River and offers a unique vantage point of the city.

Not to mention, going on a taste test mission along the exciting Kentucky Bourbon Trail , a stretch of distilleries from Lexington to Louisville that continues Kentucky’s proud bourbon heritage. 7. Dayton, Ohio

Dayton is a mid-sized city in western Ohio best known as being the hometown of the famed Wright Brothers. If you’re a diehard aviation fan, you should also pop over to the National Museum of the United States Air Force , where historic aircraft and space shuttles are displayed.

While it’s best known for its place in America’s aviation history, it boasts other incredible attractions worth seeing on the weekend. Open year-round, the 2nd Street Market is an excellent open-air market where nearly 50 vendors set up shop and offer locally made fares. In pleasant weather, a picnic at the Carillon Historical Park is another fantastic thing to do in Dayton. This 65-acre park hosts exhibits showcasing Dayton’s unique history from its earliest settlers to modern times and even has a Wright Brothers plane on display.

8. Ann Arbor, Michigan

Trade the buzz of one university town for another with a visit to Ann Arbor. This charming city makes for an ideal weekend getaway for any occasion and offers activities suitable for both kids and kids at heart. At the popular Hands-On Museum , the entire family can partake in interactive exhibits while learning a bit about science. Ann Arbor is also a fantastic getaway for outdoor lovers, thanks to its countless city parks and stretch of Huron River where you can kayak and paddle.

Making time for a stroll around the University of Michigan campus is another highly recommended Ann Arbor stop, noted for its many historic buildings and the pretty Nichols Arboretum . 9. Charleston, West Virginia

As West Virginia’s capital city, Charleston is a city brimming with history and charm. When you first arrive, get acquainted with Charleston by strolling along Capitol Street, a charming area noted for its local shops, restaurants, and red brick buildings.

At the end of the street, the glint of the Capitol’s golden dome will capture your attention. Visitors can step inside and marvel at the marble interiors and the glittering chandelier that hangs in the Rotunda. Coonskin Park lies just outside of town and offers disc golfing, forested hiking trails, and pedal boat rentals. Houston is one of the top five most populated U.S. cities, with a population of more than 2 million residents. Within Houston , you've got immediate access to a diverse collection of top-notch cuisine, the Space Center and NASA, world-class museums, large outdoor spaces, major league sporting teams and more.

But -- sometimes, no matter how much you have to do in your own backyard, you need a change of scenery and a break from lots of people .

Texas is a pretty massive state at around 800 miles across, so unlike in the Northeast, if you want to limit your driving distance to an easy four hours or so in each direction, you probably aren't crossing the state lines for this particular road trip . Within a four-hour drive from Houston, technically you could reach some of Louisiana and come within an hour or so of getting to Arkansas or Oklahoma, but more than likely, you are staying in the Lone Star State.

With that in mind, here are three very different road trips within Texas that you can take from Houston on less than a tank of gas.

Texas Hill Country

Distance from Houston : 3 hours

What to do: Get ready to unplug, put your feet in the cold water and crack open a cool drink.

In the Texas Hill Country, you can enjoy the lakes, rivers and hikes in small Central Texas towns such as Wimberley, New Braunsfels, Canyon Lake, Fredericksburg and Luckenbach.

Wineries are abundant in this area, as are can't-miss swimming holes . As far as swimming holes go, in Wimberley, you'll find Blue Hole (great for hanging out and rope swinging) and Jacob's Well (great for jumping in from rocks above). About 30-miles west of Austin , you'll find Hamilton Pool, another top-notch place to cool down in the Hill Country.

But all in all, for a true getaway, I'm partial to Wimberley, where you can stay away from it all on the Blanco River in a cabin and then easily walk into town for a meal and shopping at local, independent retailers when you decide you need a dose of civilization.

Then, when you want to take in the view, walk up the 218 rock steps of Old Baldy to get a breathtaking aerial view of the area.

An added benefit is you've now probably worked off enough calories to have an extra snack or drink, which are in abundant supply.

Where to stay: Book a cabin that ranges from one to three bedrooms at The Waters Point in Wimberley. Prices usually range from $200–$400 per night.

At one of these cabins, such as the two-bedroom Pioneer Cabin pictured above, you will have private access to a half-mile of the Blanco River, but you can also walk right into town or make the three-minute drive over to Blue Hole to swing into the blue water below.

While it's very different from Wimberley, if you want a taste of the Hill Country on hotel points, you can check out Hyatt Lost Pines Resort in Bastrop for 20,000 World of Hyatt points per night or the Hyatt Regency Hill Country outside San Antonio for 15,000 Hyatt points per night or by using a Category 1–4 award you get each year you have the World of Hyatt Credit Card.

Where to eat and drink: If you head to Wimberley, absolutely don't miss dinner from the Leaning Pear (open Tuesday to Saturday for dinner). We loved everything we tried but gave the highest marks to the wood-fired pizza, Leaning Pear house salad, fried avocado tostada and fried brussels sprouts.

Also, be sure and pick up some breakfast pastries next to the Leaning Pear from the Sugar Shack Bakery. That way, you'll have them at the ready for when you wake up the next morning. (Get the cinnamon and sugar croissants if they have them in stock!) If you want a meal with live music by the river in Wimberley, check out Ino'z.

Bolivar Peninsula

Distance: 1.5 hours, depending on the ferry schedule or if you make the drive through Winnie without the ferry

What to do: You head to the 27-mile stretch of beach on the Bolivar Peninsula from Houston because you want to go to see, hear or touch the waves without spending all day in the car to head to a further afield stretch of beach. To get to Bolivar, you can take a longer drive around to avoid the ferry, or you can take a free 2.7-mile ferry ride from Galveston to the peninsula that carries both vehicles or pedestrians. Either way, you're a world away from the city in a hurry.

Many visitors to Bolivar rent golf carts and cruise up and down the shoreline. You can also go fishing from the beach or in the bay.

Where to stay: You'll probably want to rent a beach house if you plan on spending the night in Crystal Beach or one of the other portions of Bolivar. And this may be a surprise if you haven't been to Bolivar in a while, but many of the beach houses are really, really nice and on the newer side. In 2008, Hurricane Ike all but destroyed Bolivar, wiping out thousands of homes, taking lives and bringing with it over 100-mile-per-hour winds and a massive storm surge. It was a horrific event for the Texas Gulf Coast.

Now, more than a decade later, there are new beach houses dotting the shore, many of which are available for rent from local rental companies or on sites such as Airbnb and VRBO.

If you really want to use your points, instead of Bolivar, you can stay in Galveston and redeem 30,000 Wyndham Rewards points per night at the historic, beachfront Hotel Galvez. Another option near the ferry landing in Galveston is a Homewood Suites by Hilton that can be booked from around 30,000 Hilton Honors points per night .

But really, for a true Bolivar experience, go for a beach house rental if you can.

Where to eat and drink: Have you really been to Bolivar if you didn't order a basket of Gulf Coast fried shrimp at Stingarees ? Arguably not. Stinagree is located in Crystal Beach on the Intracoastal Canal and is known for its seafood, cold drinks, live music and epic sunsets. My family can't go to Bolivar without a stop (or two) at Stinagree. Bonus points if some tugs and barges go by during your meal.

Another popular spot for a meal on Bolivar is Steve's Landing, where my family can vouch for the shrimp and grits. For some quick breakfast items when you don't feel like flipping your own pancakes, check out Dannay's Donuts or Third Coast Coffee.

San Antonio

Distance: 3 hours west on I-10

What to do: San Antonio is only a three-hour drive from Houston (OK, that's when there's no traffic), but it feels like a world away. There's no shortage of things to do, see and eat in San Antonio, but you'd certainly be remiss if you didn't spend some time on the Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. An easy, fun way to get a sense of where you are is to take a narrated riverboat cruise up and down the river. Then, you have to get some chips, dip, tacos and perhaps a cold margarita.

Also near the Riverwalk is the world-famous Alamo, and while it's certainly worth a visit, it is far from the only mission in the area. The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park has four separate mission sites you can visit during your stay.

And, if all of that above-ground exploring gets too hot (and it really might in the summer), you can head underground to Natural Bridge Caverns that takes you up to 180 feet below the surface, where it stays around 70 degrees all year long.

For some more indoor, air-conditioned activities for the family in San Antonio, you can check out the DoSeum, which is geared for kids up to about age 10. For the older crew, the Witte Museum gets high marks and is even free on Tuesday evenings, if you can time your visit right.

Where to stay: There are many hotels on or near the Riverwalk. You can use Marriott points to book a room at the historic St. Anthony, a Luxury Collection property, for 30,000 to 40,000 Marriott points per night . The Hyatt Regency San Antonio Riverwalk isn't quite as luxe, but it is in a great location for 12,000 Hyatt points per night. If you want a bit more resort with your trip to the San Antonio area, the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort is just outside the city, complete with a lazy river, a waterslide, shaded pools and more.

Where to eat: You must eat some Tex-Mex while in San Antonio and you'll have plenty of options in that arena. Some popular options include La Margarita, Mi Tierra (open 24 hours and has a bakery) and the prickly pear margarita at Boudro's basically has its own fan club.

If you are craving chicken wings, Cullum's Attagirl has a wide assortment of flavor choices. TPG's Benet Wilson swears by the Nashville hot and the peanut butter and jelly (it shouldn't work, but she says it totally does). For a sweet treat, Bird Bakery also gets high marks for its cupcakes and cookies.

Bottom line

If you're in Houston and have a tank of gas at the ready, there are almost limitless experiences, vastly different from city life, just waiting within a few hours' drive. From the cold rivers and shady trees of the Hill Country to the hot salsa and vibrant culture in San Antonio and the lazy afternoons at the beach in Bolivar, there's no need to spend all your time in Texas underneath the shadow of the Houston skyscrapers -- get out there and explore.

Houston area facing 'catastrophic' flood conditions as severe weather pummels Texas

Heavy flooding is forecasted to hit Harris County midday Friday.

The Houston area is bracing for "catastrophic" flooding Friday as severe downpours and extreme weather pummel parts of Texas.

Harris County's Office of Emergency Management moved to its highest activation level Friday morning in anticipation of the imminent flooding, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo told reporters during a news conference.

Hidalgo warned residents that the forecast has changed as heavy rains have already fallen in northern Polk County and will make their way to Harris County sooner than expected.

"Right now, you may think if you live in those neighborhoods that things have leveled off and we're good to go, but this threat is ongoing and it's going to get worse," she said. "It is not your typical river flood."

A flood watch is in effect in southeastern Texas and Louisiana. Numerous flash flood warnings are also in effect in Texas.

About 45 miles north of Houston, in Cleveland, Texas, a 12-hour old baby was medevaced by the Coast Guard due "reportedly experiencing low oxygen levels at Texas Emergency Hospital, which does not have a neonatal intensive care unit."

Due to flooding in the area, emergency workers were unable to transport the baby by ambulance.

Hidalgo noted that 700 homes have already flooded in Polk County.

"In some way seeing what's taking place there, it's like seeing the future," Hidalgo said.

The judge estimated that 100 Harris County homes are at risk for flooding.

Harris County issued a disaster declaration Thursday and called for mandatory evacuations for residents living closest to the banks of the East Fork of the San Jacinto River.

Those unable to leave will likely be trapped in their homes for two to three days, she warned.

"If you stay there, not only are you a sitting duck, but you're putting our law enforcement in danger," Hidalgo said.

Hidalgo said first responders have rescued 26 people and 30 pets since Thursday night.

Hidalgo said she has been in touch with Gov. Greg Abbott, who issued a disaster declaration Thursday.

"As flooding conditions and severe weather continue in multiple regions across Texas, I expanded the disaster declaration to add 59 counties to ensure Texans and their communities receive the assistance and support they need to stay safe," the governor said in a statement.

"For Texans in at-risk areas, it is important to remain weather-aware, follow the guidance of state and local officials, and avoid traveling in dangerous flood conditions. The State of Texas continues working with emergency management and local officials to deploy any additional resources needed to provide ongoing support and protect our fellow Texans," he added.

The East Fork of the San Jacinto River was up to 75 feet above sea level Friday afternoon and expected to crest at 78 feet later in the day, according to the forecast. The record is 81 feet set during Hurricane Harvey .

Typically, the river is 45 to 50 feet above sea level, Hidalgo said.

"Extreme" river flooding is expected to impact central and east Texas river basins through next week, with "historic" releases by lake and reservoir operators amid the heavy rainfall exacerbating flooding conditions, the governor's office said.

Flooding has caused closures along highways in the region. Abbott's office said state responders aided with "multiple" high-water rescues in central and southeast Texas overnight while urging residents to monitor forecasts and follow guidance from local emergency officials.

Residents are also being impacted by power outages amid the severe weather. More than 2,200 Houston-area customers were without power Friday afternoon, according to CenterPoint Energy's outage tracker.

Clocking in at just under five hours from Indy, Put-in-Bay is a tropical getaway in the middle of Lake Erie just off the shore of northern Ohio. 3. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee may be known worldwide for cheese and beer but there’s so much more!  You can keep busy for several days exploring places like the  Harley-Davidson Museum , the  Milwaukee Public Market , and watching the famous wings open on the  Milwaukee Art Museum .  If you love a good festival – Milwaukee has lots and lots of them including the world’s largest music festival each summer.  The city has an endless amount of great food for all tastes, and don’t forget the beautiful views of Lake Michigan.  Take the time to explore some of the historic downtown neighborhoods and don’t leave without buying a bag of fresh cheese curds for your road trip home.

4. Dayton, Ohio

Dayton is best known as the place that gave birth to modern aviation. The Wright Brothers called Dayton home and the city is full of historic places that will give you a front row seat to the history of the “flying machine” which is how the first airplane was trademarked. One of the original Wright Brothers bicycle shops is still in tact, and you can see an original Wright Flyer at the Carillon Historical Park. Take a ride over to Huffman Prairie Field where the brothers tested out there invention or tour the mansion where they lived. Best of all – Dayton is home to the Museum of The United States Air Force – an unbelievable airplane museum that consists of four different hangars and impossible to see in a single day. See rare military aircraft and even go on board a retired Air Force One plane. And it’s free!

5. Parke County, Indiana

Parke County, Indiana is best known as the “covered bridge capitol of the world”! Located less than than two hours from downtown Indy, you’ll find a great relaxing destination with some much needed peace and quiet. You can grab an old fashioned map (remember those?) at the local visitors center and then set out to find as many of the historic covered bridges as you can, making it a perfect romantic getaway. Consider booking a room or campsite at Turkey Run State Park, Indiana’s most popular state park, for your home base. They offer brand new, minimalist cabins as well. The park has plenty of great hiking trails for all skill levels.

6. Adventures On The Gorge – Lansing, West Virginia

The New River Gorge Bridge is one of the most impressive architectural feats in American history. One of the many daring activities offered through  Adventures On The Gorge  in Lansing, West Virginia is called “Bridge Walk”. You can literally walk along the catwalk beneath the third highest bridge in the U.S. It’s not for everyone, but an unforgettable experience for thrill seekers! During your stay at the adventure resort, you can zip line, climb trees, enjoy incredible sunsets, and of course – some of the best whitewater rafting in the world.

7. St. Louis, Missouri

The Gateway to the West is more than just the country’s tallest national monument. (630 feet high, in case you were wondering – and yes, you can take a tram all the way up to the top.) Saint Louis is home to Forest Park, which is bigger than New York’s Central Park, and full of free attractions like the Saint Louis Science Center, Missouri History Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum and yes – the award winning Saint Louis Zoo, which is only one of two major zoos in the America with free admission. Enjoy a great meal on “The Hill” – the last still thriving Italian neighborhood in America and take your kids to City Museum – one of the most bizarre, yet incredible places in the midwest. Tour Budweiser, take a stroll at the Missouri Botanical Garden, or try some St. Louis style thin crust pizza or toasted ravioli! Yum!

8. Springfield, Illinois

This is a great road trip idea for history lovers – Abe Lincoln’s hometown of Springfield, Illinois! You can spend an entire weekend exploring where Lincoln served in the Illinois legislature, worked as a self-taught lawyer, and lived with his family. You can tour the only home he ever owned which is beautifully preserved along with the neighborhood where he lived. Lincoln is also buried in the local cemetery beneath a massive tomb. You can also enjoy some Route 66 history and tour the state’s capitol building as well as the Governor’s mansion.

9. Holland, Michigan

If you thought Holland was in Europe – you are correct!  But, America’s Holland is located in Michigan and it’s a cool town worth exploring.  Pick up a pair of wooden shoes and walk along the streets of downtown for great shopping and lots of dining options.  (Fun fact:  the streets of downtown Holland are heated so they don’t have to plow snow in the winter. Genius!)  Holland is also home to the only authentic Dutch wind mill that is still operational in the U.S.  If tulips are your thing – visit during the annual  festival  each spring.  The Holland Bowl Mill is also very cool – ask them for a quick tour of the production and find a one of a kind wooden bowl to take home!

Bill’s Advice:  I eat a lot of pizza when I’m on the road and Holland has one of the best pizza places I’ve ever been to.  It’s called  Fricano’s Pizza  and sometimes, I have dreams about it.

10. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Famous for having more bridges than any other U.S. city, Pittsburgh is a terrific destination for a weekend or extended getaway. You can take in a baseball game with beautiful views of the Sixth Street Bridge, take a ride on the historic Duquesne Incline, or visit the city’s quirky bicycle museum. If you grew up watching Mr. Rogers, Pittsburgh was his home town and you can spend a day exploring all things Mr. Rogers – including seeing the very sets from the iconic television show and his puppets!

11. Owensboro, Kentucky

Just south of Evansville is the bluegrass music capitol of the world – Owensboro, Kentucky. If you like the idea of watching local bands in a barn, taste testing bourbon, eating good barbecue, or catching catfish – you’ll love this place. Owensboro is also home to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and music legend Bill Monroe. You can even tour his childhood home .

12. Cincinnati, Ohio

There’s a lot to see and do in Cincinnati! One of my favorite museums – The American Sign Museum is alone worth the road trip. Downtown you’ll find some fun places to eat, catch a game at Great American Ballpark, or take a stroll along the Ohio river on the beautiful hiking and biking trails. If you take a short drive (or walk) across the bridge downtown you’ll wind up in Covinginton, Kentucky. This historic town that was once notorious for gangsters is now a lovely area with dining and shopping, plus great views looking back at the Cincinnati skyline. Speaking of “skyline” – Cincy’s famous chili is available all over town. (I’m not personally a fan – but a lot of people like it!)

13. Madison, Wisconsin

The state capital of Wisconsin is constantly ranked as one of the best places to live in the U.S.  Madison is also a fun college town with lots of things to do – though its best to visit in the spring and summer months if you hate cold weather.  My favorite thing to do in Madison is the Dane County Farmer’s Market that wraps around the entire Capitol building. Patrons all walk in one direction to shop for fresh produce and local goods.  Of course, State Street is full of action – all seven blocks between downtown and the University of Wisconsin campus. You can find food (140 restaurants!) unique stores, and plenty of entertainment day or night.

Bill’s Advice:  Tour the beautiful Wisconsin State Capitol, and enjoy some time relaxing near the water.  (You can ice skate in the winter months)  For a quirky stop – a short drive to Middleton will get you to the  National Mustard Museum !

14. Nashville, Tennessee

Music City USA has seen a major boom in recent years. Along with the treasures that have always made Nashville great, there are brand new attractions and businesses making it one of the hottest cities in the south.  For country music fans – the Hall of Fame is a great bet, along with a tour of the  Ryman Auditorium  and  Grand Ole Opry.   These days, Broadway is a happening street akin to Times Square in New York City.  Bars, live music, and plenty of good people watching.  Check out an exact replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, and be sure to try some authentic Nashville Hot Chicken while you’re in town!

Bill’s Advice:  Nashville is great for a weekend but definitely plenty to do for an extended visit or vacation.  It’s also one of the most popular cities on the list – which means it’s going to be busy.  Brace yourself for crazy traffic, higher than average prices to park your car downtown, and lots of people.  To save a bit of money, consider staying in one of the many communities that surround Nashville or out near the airport.  If you’re a country music fan – the George Jones Museum is a must! If not, you can still check out the rooftop bar on the fourth floor with great views of the river. 

Travel Time: 4h 10m / 288 miles

15. Door County, Wisconsin

One of the prettiest destinations in all of the midwest is Door County, Wisconsin. With its welcoming small communities, abundance of outdoor adventure, and of course – cherries galore – it makes for a perfect road trip. Be sure to check out the goats walking atop the roof of Al Johnson’s Swedish restaurant in Sister Bay, take a sunset cruise from Fish Creek to capture some beautiful photos, and of course if your timing is right – pick some fresh cherries in one of the many orchards in the area.

Bill’s Advice: Be sure to pop into the Wisconsin Visitors Center and pick up a cheese map! You’ll find every location for fresh cheese and cheese curds all of the state. It’s fantastic!

16. Louisville, Kentucky

Of course most people know Louisville as the place where the famous Louisville Slugger baseball bats are made, but that’s just the start!  Downtown Louisville offers a wide variety of attractions from the Muhammad Ali Center to Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby takes place.  For an adventure – try out the world’s only underground zip line at Louisville Mega Cavern or a cruise on the historic Belle of Louisville.  Lots of great restaurants for all tastes and cool places to stay including 21c and The Galt House Hotel.

Bill’s Advice:  Louisville is a great weekend trip!  If you love Kentucky Fried Chicken, pay your respects to Col. Sanders himself.  His grave site is a short drive from downtown.  Just follow the yellow line at Cave Hill Cemetery and you’ll find it.  Don’t be surprised if you see a bucket of chicken sitting on the tombstone.  No, seriously.

17. Quad Cities, Illinois/Iowa

Talk about getting your bang for the buck – how often do you get four destinations packed into a single stop?  The Quad Cities is made up of five towns that share the Illinois-Iowa border.  (Yes, “quad” makes no sense as there are five and not four – but believe me, they know.)  It’s best known as the world headquarters for John Deere, and visitors can tour multiple historical spots that tell the story of the famous company.  Take a quick side trip up to LeClaire on the Iowa side to see where the show American Pickers began.

Bill’s Advice:  Try some Whitey’s Ice Cream while you’re in the region because it’s amazing!  It is seriously so good that it’s the first thing I want to do when I pass through the region.  I’ve interviewed the family that owns it – and they’re very nice!

18. Fort Wayne, Indiana

Fort Wayne is probably not a spot that’s been on your radar but Indiana’s second largest city has a lot going on.  Its minor league baseball stadium is award winning and its local library is known as the best genealogy research center in the country.  The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is one of the best designed kid-friendly zoos around and a brand new, beautiful  riverfront project  has injected new energy into the town.  You’ll also find lots of opportunity for outdoor recreation.

Bill’s Advice:  For something unique, visit the headquarters for Sweetwater – one of the largest music and instrument stores in the world.  Vera Bradley is also headquartered in Fort Wayne and has events during the year.

19. Indiana Dunes National Park

So let’s be honest, Indiana isn’t exactly a great place to live if you crave frequent road trips to the ocean. Florida? California? Better save some money for gas. However, it’s an easy trip to some of the beaches along beautiful Lake Michigan. Often underrated are the northern beaches of the midwest which are often less crowded, cleaner, and have sunsets that are just as beautiful. You can sit back and relax, rent a paddle board or kayak and watch your kids burn off energy running up and down the impressive sand dunes.

20. Columbus, Ohio

Columbus, known to locals as “C-Bus” is the capitol city of Ohio. It’s been going through major growth over the last decade and is a destination worthy of a road trip. The sprawling downtown is easily accessible with the new CBUS Circulator, free to use for visitors. Check out the Short North Arts District for galleries, dining, and locally owned shopping. Local attractions include the Franklin Conservatory and Botanical Garden, the COSI Science Museum, Columbus Art Museum, and the Columbus Zoo which is one of the best in the country. Be sure to take a free tour of the Ohio state capitol building as well!

Our highlights: Visit Yoder's Bargain Store, the local shop in Fredericksburg where Amish residents procure their necessities. As an outsider, be respectful, but you'll be able to find every item you can think of at an extremely low price.

How to get there: Head east on ON-401 and ON-403, then take ON-420 east to reach Niagara Falls, Canada. You can take an alternate route to enter through the New York side of Niagara Falls without crossing into Canada - this will extend the drive time by about 2 hours.

Our highlights: If you're feeling brave, try out the Wildplay MistRider Zipline – this thrilling zipline starts on the Canadian side and takes you right over the top of the thunderous waterfall below.

The best way to see the Falls up close is to take the Maid of The Mist Tour. You'll head out by boat to explore all around the base of the Falls on a time-honored tour that has been running in some form since the 1840s.

The beach is only one of the attractions in Washington Park, with other attractions including 19th-century monuments and a century-old zoo.
