I stayed at the STF Abisko Turiststation during a trip in January 2023 and had an unforgettable experience. This lodge, hostel, and activity center in Abisko was bustling with activity from the minute we arrived. Travelers from around the world came to experience the northern lights and spend time in the wintery outdoors in northern Sweden.

My experience at the STF Abisko Turiststation was one of the highlights of my trip through Finland , Sweden, Norway, and the UK in early 2023. I loved the energy and history of the place, which has been welcoming travelers since 1903. There are photos of the Turiststation from its earlier days hanging on the walls, along with vintage Fjällräven clothing and antique outdoor gear.

My group had a hard time researching Abisko and, as a result, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect before we arrived. I wanted to write this post to help you plan your trip to the Turiststation and to give you my best tips before you go. I tried to include as many of my own photos as possible in hopes that they’ll help you make an informed decision about whether to visit Abisko and/or stay at the Turiststation.

About the STF Abisko Turiststation

Set in Abisko National Park, the STF Abisko Turiststation is a government-run (STA stands for Swedish Tourist Association) hostel near Lake Torneträsk. The property is set just a few minutes’ walk from a train station in the Swedish Lapland, a mountainous area within the Arctic Circle. When I visited in winter 2023, most travelers at the STF Abisko Turiststation were primarily interested in seeing the northern lights.

Part of the geographic appeal is that the Kungsleden hiking route, one of the most famous hiking trails in Sweden, runs past the Turiststation. For this reason, and because of its location along a train route with service to Stockholm, most of the visitors to the Turiststation are on adventure trips. There are many outdoor activities to enjoy within walking distance from the Turiststation, but you’ll also find several types of tours available.

About Abisko, Sweden

Abisko is a village set in the mountainous Swedish Lapland, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) north of the Arctic Circle. The village is a few miles from Abisko National Park, an area known for its fabulous cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and other winter sports.

A map of Sweden showing Abisko, the Arctic Circle, and Stockholm

Abisko is connected to the rest of Sweden by the SJ AB, a train line that runs from Stockholm, Sweden to Narvik, Norway. The train stops in Kiruna, Abisko, and at the STF Abisko Turiststation. Less than 100 people live in the village of Abisko, so tourists and tourism make up a large percentage of the people you’ll see in Abisko at any given time.

Many people come to Abisko in winter to see the northern lights because this area is often within the auroral oval, or the area where auroral activity is high. The weather patterns over Abisko are often clearer than other areas, earning the small village and surrounding area the reputation for having a “ blue hole .” As you may know, you’ll need clear skies in order to see the aurora borealis, so this is really important for your chances of seeing the northern lights.

What is it like at the STF Abisko Turiststation?

When we planned our trip to the STF Abisko Turiststation , we were expecting a remote hostel without many amenities. In fact, we even skipped a night that we paid for at the Turiststation because we thought we would be more comfortable for another night in Rovaniemi. I’m so glad to say that we were wrong!

The STF Abisko Turiststation was a really special place, largely because it attracts visitors who are doing something special. This government-run facility is the northern outpost for the Kungsleden Abisko, one of the national signature trails through the mountains of the Swedish Lapland. You’ll find hikers, young professionals, and families who have come to Abisko for a unique and, often, once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the northern lights or, in the summer, hike in the national park.

Check in/check out process

There is no self-check-in at the Turiststation. Visitors will need to report to the reception area, where you’ll be greeted and receive a key, linens, and any relevant information you’ll need.

What are the check-in and check-out times at STF Abisko Turiststation?

Guests can check in between 3pm and 11pm daily, and check out is available between 7:30am and 10am. Note that guests are required to provide photo ID and a credit card when checking in for their room.

If you need to rent linens, they’ll be provided to you at check in and you’ll need to carry them to your room yourself. The linens come in a bag and are somewhat heavy, so you probably won’t be able to carry more than two sets at a time. You’ll need to make your own bed upon arriving in your room.

There is free parking for anyone staying overnight at the STF Abisko Turiststation. The parking area was a short walk from the main hostel and cabins, but there’s additional parking on the other side of the street for all visitors. If you have any questions about parking, I’d be sure to ask at the reception area.

The accommodations at the STF Abisko Turiststation are comfortable and reasonably clean. There are a few types of rooms and options to choose from, but this is a hostel and not a luxury accommodation. Most of the furniture in the hostel is high quality but somewhat bare feeling, from the beds to the couches to the seating.

Types of rooms available

There are three types of rooms available at the STF Abisko Turiststation: dorm rooms, quadruple rooms, cottages, and holiday homes. When I stayed at the Turiststation, I was visiting with three friends so we had a quadruple room to ourselves. The room came with two bunk beds, a small desk space, a sink, and a stool to sit on.

The Turiststation also has standard hotel rooms available in the main lodge. These rooms are available as single or double rooms, and they all have their own bathrooms. Some rooms are accessible; I’d recommend that you confirm with the hotel as early as possible to ensure that you receive an accessible room if you need one.

About bedding and linens

Bedding and linens are available for an extra charge at the STF Abisko Turiststation. I’ve heard that this is normal for hostels in Sweden, but it was annoying to me (and many other reviewers) that they charge extra for this service. Although the fee may vary throughout the year, when I visited it was about 15 euros per person.

They do allow you to bring your own linens to avoid the fees, but there were signs that explicitly stated that sleeping bags were not sufficient. Given the remote location of Abisko, I would imagine that there are very few visitors who are able to bypass this fee.

Onsite Restaurant

The Turiststation is located outside of the town of Abisko, so there is only one restaurant in the area for guests who do not want to cook. The restaurant has options that are vegan, vegetarian, and/or gluten free, so your group should be able to find something suitable to eat.

Our group didn’t eat at the onsite restaurant, nor did many of the other budget travelers that we met at the Turiststation. When I talked to people who did choose to dine at the restaurant, most said it was “fine.” I’d definitely recommend that you cook your own meals, if possible.

Shared kitchen

My number one tip if you’re visiting the STF Abisko Turiststation is to plan to cook all of your own meals while staying in the hostel. The kitchen space was adequate for all of the visitors in the hostel, with two full kitchen setups and a large dining room.

The large kitchen is well equipped, including four cooking ranges, four full sized refrigerators, and plenty of cast iron pans, pots, and spatulas. You may have to wait to use a stovetop if you try to cook at a busy time, but for the most part we were able to prepare our meals without delay.

Tip: Kitchen is not well stocked

Although you’ll find the utensils and tools you need to cook a meal, the kitchens were not well stocked with the essentials. We found that we needed to supply our own cooking oils, as well as seasonings like salt and pepper. Additionally, you’ll want to bring your own coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, as they are not provided for visitors.

Tip: Bring your own groceries

When we visited, we did our grocery shopping in Kiruna before making our way to Abisko. There, we were able to buy granola, fresh berries, tortillas, and other cheese and produce. Members of our group also brought up groceries from Stockholm on the train, so we had much fresher and tastier ingredients to work with than others who were only able to shop in Abisko.

If you can’t shop before you arrive in Abisko, there is a small but decently well stocked store in the main lodge of the Turiststation. You’ll find many of the shelf-stable essentials there, but if you can you’ll probably want to do at least one run to the grocery store in Abisko.

There are saunas available for guests to use while staying at the Turiststation. You do not need to prebook these saunas. The public saunas are located in the main hostel area on the ground floor below the kitchen, and there is one area for men and another for women. At the end of the day, the men’s sauna becomes coed.

The Turiststation also offers a traditional sauna experience, set in a Sami hut. These saunas will need to be pre booked, and you can do so using the iPads in the main lodge or in the hostel portion of the Turiststation.

Dress code for the saunas

In order to enter the sauna, you will want to have a towel, shower shoes, and a water bottle. Bathing suits are optional. You will be required to shower, including wetting your hair, before entering the sauna.

Common Areas

There are several common areas in the STF Abisko Turiststation, with the biggest being in the kitchen of the hostel and the main lodge. Throughout the hostel there are small spots for groups to gather and talk, eat snacks, or play a few board games.

Everyone who stays at the STF Abisko Turiststation will need to check in at the main lodge. In addition to the reception desk, the lodge has a library, a fireplace area, and several nooks where you can sit and read a book or talk to a friend. The restaurant serves meals, but many guests had beer, wine, or hot chocolate that they sipped while sitting on the couches into the evening.

The main lodge also has a row of iPads with information about the tours you can take from the Turiststation, including northern lights excursions, hikes, and ice climbing. You can book directly on the iPad without needing to speak to the receptionist.

The second largest common area is the community kitchen, located in the main hostel lodge. This is where you’ll find people enjoying meals, playing games, squeezing in some work, or just reading a book. The area is brightly lit and functional, though the seating isn’t overly comfortable. Some games and puzzles are provided, or you may want to bring your own .

Alcohol in common areas

Please note that alcohol is not permitted in any common areas throughout the STF Abisko Turiststation. Although you can purchase beer in the store in the main lodge, there is a sign informing visitors that alcohol is to be consumed in your room and kept out of sight in public areas. In practice, these rules seemed to be loosely enforced – however, I did not see any visitors who were noticeably drunk or intoxicated during my stay.

abisko tourist station camping

Is the STF Abisko Turiststation good for families?

Yes, there were many families staying at the STF Abisko Turiststation. I saw visitors who ranged in age from infants to grandparents, with many multigenerational groups .

If you’re traveling with children, the shared bathrooms could be somewhat difficult to manage. You may consider booking a hotel, private holiday home, or cottage if you’re not willing to share a bathroom with other guests.

abisko tourist station camping

Is the STF Abisko Turiststation a party destination?

No, there was not really any sort of partying happening at the STF Abisko Turiststation when I visited. While there were a few groups in their early 20s that got a little rowdy in the evenings, they kept to themselves and did not disturb other guests. The overall atmosphere at the Turiststation was very calm and outdoor oriented.

Safety at the STF Abisko Turiststation

Although you’ll want to practice normal safety precautions anywhere you stay, the STF Abisko Turiststation felt very safe to our group. There were many solo female travelers when I visited this hostel, and everyone I talked to indicated that they felt relatively secure at the Turiststation.

We were worried about our boots potentially getting stolen, so we did not keep them in the central boot area at the entrance to the building. Theft didn’t seem to be a big problem at the STF Abisko Turiststation when we visited; one evening I saw a six pack of beers that someone had left in a common area. When I returned in the morning, I saw that the six pack was still there, untouched.

The biggest threat to your safety in Abisko is the risk of succumbing to the natural elements during winter activities. If you choose to partake in any outdoor sport or activity, ensure that you have the appropriate gear, knowledge, and experience before you set off. At the very least you’ll need insulated boots, snow pants, a heavy winter jacket, gloves, and a hat.

Activities near STF Abisko Turiststation

Most of the activities near the Turiststation will involve winter or summer outdoor sports, depending on the season. The area is mountainous and full of hiking trails, cross country ski trails, and there are additional areas for ice climbing. Here’s a bit more information about the main activities you’ll find near the STF Abisko Turiststation.

During the warmer months, or on more packed trails during the winter, you can hike in Abisko National Park. There are trails that lead out from different points in the Turiststation, offering views of the lake or the nearby mountains. My sense is that there are trails for all difficulty levels and types of groups, so I’d recommend asking the staff at the reception desk for guidance when planning your hikes.

A photo of me on a hike on a clear day. There is densely packed snow along the trail, so I'm able to walk without snowshoes.

Cross country skiing

There are cross country ski trails near the Turiststation, or you can simply ski along the existing hiking trails. You can rent cross country skis and poles by the day from the STF Abisko Turiststation.

For the best results and tips for choosing a good trail, I’d recommend asking for help choosing a route from the staff at the rental desk or the reception area. Be sure to tell them your experience and general fitness level so that you find a trail that’s a good fit for your group. There’s nothing worse than heading off on a trail that is far too ambitious for your group!

Snowshoeing

Although cross country skiing is the more popular winter sport, I prefer snowshoeing. Snowshoeing is similar to hiking, but the width of the gear allows you to walk with relative ease through snowy embankments. Many people choose to snowshoe with poles, but I find that I prefer not to carry them because they hurt my hands.

You can rent snowshoes and poles by the day from the STF Abisko Turiststation. Snowshoes are not necessary for some of the densely packed trails near the Turiststation, but they were helpful for walking near the lake. The staff should be happy to offer some guidance as you choose a snowshoeing trail.

Snowshoes attached to my boots. You can see a tag that reads STF Abisko #4

The best snowshoeing trail we tried was about a 30 minute drive from the Turiststation north towards the Norwegian border. The trails were completely covered by snow, so we were able to make fresh tracks across the fields. Always be aware of the potential for avalanches and stay in flatter areas if you’re not sure how to assess or manage the risks.

Although this activity technically takes place in the Turiststation, I wanted to include it as a potential activity for your itinerary. You can enjoy the saunas starting in the early afternoon, and you could spend a few hours going between the steaming sauna and the frigid outdoors. As a reminder, there are free saunas for guests to use in the Turiststation, or you can pay for a private sauna using the iPads near the reception desk.

Tours from the STF Abisko Turiststation

There are tours that leave directly from the STF Abisko Turiststation, and you can book them using the iPads in the main lodge or near the kitchen area. If you’d prefer to book your tours ahead of time, you can check out these highly rated experiences in Abisko.

A note: I didn’t choose to take any tours when I was in Abisko. We were able to see the northern lights several times from the STF Abisko Turiststation, but they were much more vivid and bright when we went to Senja, an island close to Tromso in Norway.

Northern Lights Tours

If you only have one shot to see the northern lights, you may want to consider taking a tour. Although you’ll have a decent shot at seeing the lights in Abisko, you’re more likely to see brighter and more vivid lights if you take a tour, where they’ll drive you to different destinations further from light pollution.

One of the most popular tours is the Northern Lights Tour with Dinner , run by Lights of Vikings. This tour begins with dinner at the Abisko Mountain Lodge, after which guests will suit up in snowsuits and snow boots for safety and comfort during the tour. Visitors can enjoy a campfire, hot drinks, and plenty of tips for best capturing the northern lights on their cameras or smartphones.

Ice Climbing

One of the highest rated experiences in Abisko is ice climbing with Abisko Adventure , where certified guides help you scale vertical ice sheets. This small group tour includes ice climbing equipment, pickup and dropoff at your hotel, and a certified guide for the experience.

This tour will pick you up directly from the STF Abisko Turiststation, but the timing is tight so you’ll want to be outside and ready to go at the time they set. Be sure to bring warm clothing, water, and snacks, as they are not provided by the tour.

Snowshoeing and hiking

If you want to experience the natural beauty of Abisko National Park, one of the best ways to do it is on foot. There are guided hikes organized by the Turiststation, but a private tour that looks serene and includes snowshoe rental is the Guided Sunrise Morning Hike with Hot Chocolate by Lights of Vikings.

This active tour takes you through the splendor of the Swedish Lapland at dawn, allowing you to enjoy a beautiful sunrise with hot chocolate and sweets. You’ll be provided with snowshoes and the tour will pick you up in Abisko.

How to get to the STF Abisko Turiststation

If you can, try to fly to Kiruna or take the train to the STF Abisko Turiststation. There are regional buses that service Abisko, but they take longer and, in my experience, were much less reliable. When possible, I would recommend that you take the train or rent a car and drive to the Turiststation.

Please note that many of these transit centers do not have indoor waiting areas, so you’ll want to be prepared for the elements before you head towards the station.

From Abisko, Sweden

The village of Abisko is located not far from the Turiststation. You can reach the STF Abisko Turiststation from the village of Abisko by walking (about 30 minutes), driving (about 3 minutes), and train (about 6 minutes). If you decide to walk to Abisko, consider bringing reflective gear so that cars can easily see you from the road in the low light conditions of the Arctic Circle in the winter.

From Kiruna, Sweden

Many people will head to Abisko from the small Swedish city of Kiruna. The easiest way to get to the Turiststation from Kiruna is to take the train, which stops in both Kiruna and at the STF Abisko Turiststation (and is relatively easy to navigate). If the train is not available, consider renting a car , which will also allow you to explore areas a little bit further from the train lines.

From Haparanda, Sweden

There are bus services from Haparanda, a town on the Swedish border with Finland . If you’re coming from the Finnish border, you may need to take a bus to Tornio, Finland and then cross into Haparanda, Sweden on foot. When I visited in 2023, there were no border agents or passport control stations between these two towns.

I had a really challenging time getting from Haparanda to Kiruna. We booked a train and, upon our arrival, were informed that it would instead be serviced by a bus. The group of us waiting at the train station did not have time to process the announcement, so we missed the bus and had to make alternative arrangements.

Then, when we did catch a different bus from Haparanda to Kiruna, it was unheated, despite the frigid arctic temperatures. It was an adventurous travel experience – to be sure – but I would struggle to recommend it.

A sign of a man walking in Haparanda, Sweden

From Rovienemi, Finland

If there was a simple and easy way to get from Rovienemi, Finland to the STF Abisko Turiststation, we couldn’t find it. The journey took an entire day, starting with a bus from Rovienemi to Tornio in Finland. From there, we walked across the border to Haparanda, Sweden and then caught a bus to Kiruna, where we rented a car and drove the remaining distance to the Turiststation.

If you need to get from Rovienemi to the Turiststation, I would recommend flying to a city on the train line and taking the train. Otherwise, consider a private transport option, renting a car , or plan to spend a full day in transit on the bus and/or train systems.

You could consider splitting your transit from Rovienemi to Abisko into two days, which would make the journey less tiring. To do this, I’d recommend going from Rovienemi to Kiruna, then spending a night in Kiruna before catching the train to the Turiststation. This way, you could do your grocery shopping, pick up some gear (so long as you’ll be returning), and catch a leisurely train directly to Abisko.

From Stockholm, Sweden

The STF Abisko Turiststation and the town of Abisko are both serviced by a train that travels directly from Stockholm, Sweden. The journey takes about 17 hours, which you can make more comfortable by opting for a sleeper car. The train departs Stockholm daily at 6pm (18:00) and arrives in Abisko at 11am (11:00).

From Narvik, Norway

You shouldn’t have any trouble getting from Abisko, Sweden to Narvik, Norway. The train runs directly from the STF Abisko Turiststation to the center of Narvik, Norway. The train was mostly quiet, clean, and easy to navigate. Someone did get fined in our train car (presumably for not having a ticket), so be sure that your documentation is in order before you board the train.

Alternatively, you could drive the short distance between these areas (it’s less than 2 hours by car), but we were warned about exorbitant tolls on the Norwegian side of the border. For this reason, we decided against renting a car and took the train to Narvik, then public transit once we arrived.

Side note: when I was in Narvik, I stayed in an arctic dome – it was unforgettable!

Do you need a car to visit the STF Abisko Turiststation?

Most people who visit the Turiststation do so without a car. The facilities are located along a train line that goes directly to Stockholm, and there are trains and other transit options to help visitors reach the nearby city of Kiruna. That said, if you want to do a lot of day hiking, you may want to consider renting a car.

When I visited, we rented a car in Kiruna and drove to Abisko. Along the way, we saw the northern lights from the road at night, and we were able to go on a few longer day hikes that were about 30 minutes or so from the Turiststation and inaccessible by public transit. The car was also nice for picking up groceries for our group of four, adding some variety over the items available in the store in the main lodge.

FAQs about the STF Abisko Turiststation

Here are the answers to frequently asked questions about the Turiststation.

Can you see the northern lights from STF Abisko Turiststation?

Yes, you can see the northern lights from the Turiststation, if the conditions are right. Remember, the northern lights are a natural phenomenon, so there’s no way to ensure that you’ll see them. Accordingly, you’ll want to plan several days in Abisko to increase your chances of seeing the lights.

Because it’s cold outside in the Arctic Circle, most people will use an app on their phone to track auroral activity. A popular one is My Aurora Forecast. When aurora activity is high, you’ll often see groups of people run towards the door to try to catch it.

If you can, bundle up and try to get outside and spend a few hours looking for the lights. Down by the lake there are public fire pits stocked with wood, so you can start a fire and join up with strangers while you all wait to see the lights. The evening we sat by the fire was the most lively and memorable of our nights at the Turiststation.

Is there a grocery store in Abisko?

Yes, there is a grocery store in Abisko that sells most of the basic groceries you might need during your stay. The grocery store is about a 30 minute walk – longer if it has recently snowed – or a 3 minute drive from the Turiststation. Additionally, a small set of essential groceries are available in the store in the main lodge area.

Groceries available at the STF Abisko Turiststation

Is the STF Abisko Turiststation near hiking trails?

Yes, the Turiststation is located in the center of a network of trails. There are hikes and walks for most any activity level, just ask the reception staff to recommend some good options. If you walk towards the train station and then under the pedestrian bridge near the public parking, there are several small loop trails that are well marked.

Does STF Abisko Turiststation have any great views?

Yes, there are great views from the main kitchen of the STF Abisko Turiststation. The dining area for the kitchen overlooks Lake Torneträsk, and there are many rooms and cabins that also have views of the lake.

Because of the light pollution, you likely will not see the northern lights from inside the Turiststation. However, you can often see the lights over Lake Torneträsk by stepping outside while the aurora activity is high.

A view over lake Torneträsk, looking over a laptop in the early morning light.

Is parking available at STF Abisko Turiststation?

Yes, there is parking available at the STF Abisko Turiststation. You can park in the central area near the Naturum Abisko, a small nature museum, or there is a larger lot across the street. If you have any doubts about where to park, just ask the staff at the reception desk in the main lodge.

Are pets allowed at the STF Abisko Turiststation?

I was actually a bit surprised by this, but pets are allowed at the STF Abisko Turiststation, and there were several large dogs in the hostel. I’m not sure if this is always the case, but the dogs were generally very calm and well behaved, and the owners did a good job of keeping them out of the kitchen areas.

Just to be safe, I would inquire with the staff before bringing any dog to the Turiststation. It’s possible that there are additional rules, fees, or breed restrictions of which you’ll want to be aware.

How can I book a stay at the STF Abisko Turiststation?

You can book your stay by clicking here . All of the room options, current rates, and availability can be found on the STF Abisko Turiststation page of Booking.com. Remember that linens are an additional charge at check-in, and they’re obligatory for most travelers.

Abisko National Park

  • Book Transfers Transfers

Established in 1909, Abisko National Park was founded in the same year some of Sweden’s first laws on nature and conservation were created. It was established to “preserve an area with northern Nordic fell nature in its original condition and as a reminiscence for scientific research” and is one of the reasons that the Abisko Scientific Research Station was built close by.

Located within the park is the STF Abisko Turiststation (formerly STF Abisko Mountain Station), which originally started accommodating visitors over 100 years ago, shortly after the opening of the Iron Ore Line railway. Today the National Park attracts many tourists who travel there to enjoy the natural environment, walking, hiking and to experience the Northern Lights.

Located 195 kilometres inside the Arctic Circle, Abisko National Park has a varied landscape that changes throughout the seasons. The park is a part of the majestic forested valley surrounded on three sides by the Abisko Alps and the vast lake Torneträsk in the north. The National Park also stretches further south into the mountains where it encompasses the lake Abiskojaure, connected to Torneträsk by the Abiskojokka river. In the winter months the area is covered in thick snow with most of the lakes, rivers and streams completely frozen over.

Kungsleden: Day 1 – From Abisko train station to the campsite in Abisko National Park

We decide not to tackle the whole stretch of the Kungsleden to the Abiskojaure hut today. However, the first stage leads through the Abisko National Park, where you can only stay overnight at one marked campsite. This camp is only about eight kilometers from the start and that’ s just the perfect distance for us to start today. But before we hit the trail, we make a detour to the Abisko Fjällstation. They have a scale with which you can measure the weight of your backpack. I have 18.5 kg, Manuel carries 22 kg and Alexander a little more than 28 kg. Unfortunately we have forgotten to weigh the dog’s bags.

Katharina's backpack

STF Abisko Turiststation Located at the northern end of Lake Abiskojaure, the Abisko Tourist Station is the starting point for many activities. From the railway station Abisko Turiststation it is a 10 minute walk to get there. There is also a road connection. A scale tells you how much weight you are about to carry on your hike! Obviously we can’ t miss the picture of us at the portal of the Kungsleden

Quickly we take a picture at the entrance portal of Kungsleden, then we set off! Just behind the portal the mobile phone reception ends. All the way to Vakkotavare we will be without telephone and internet connection. In a way a wonderful perspective for our vacation.

Start of the Kungsleden in Abisko

Since we dawdled quite a bit at the mountain station in Abisko, the people that got off the train with us are gone. All alone we set off for our Kungsleden adventure.

A tunnel for a river? – In Abisko you will find one!

However, we leave the Kungsleden shortly after its start and follow the Abiskojåkka downstream instead of upstream for a while. You will find a small attraction to visit there: when the ore train between Luleå and Narvik was built, it was easier to blow out a tunnel for the river in Abisko than to build a bridge over it for the Malmbanan. Not far from the starting point of Kungsleden we are amazed to watch the wild river roaring out of the tunnel.

The Abiskojåkka flows through the tunnel at Abisko

Back on the Kungsleden we hike through a small forest at the beginning, before meeting the Abiskojåkka again. Wild and unregulated and with quite a noise it flows next to us. Did anyone mention anything about silence? I can’t get enough of looking at the Abiskojåkka and wonder if it’s really only a few hours since I was standing in a town and taking the train?

Suspension bridge on the Kungsleden

Our first night in the wilderness of Lapland

As already mentioned, it is not far to the campsite in the Abisko National Park, and so our first stage is completed after about two hours. Arriving at the camp, however, we realize that it is located in a very humid area. The way to the toilet house is completely flooded. We find a nice, quiet and dry place in the woods a little bit away from the river and the other tents. It is still unfamiliar to set everything up, because our routines have not yet developed for this tour. Finally, however, the three tents are pitched and we enjoy our dinner!

Understand [ edit ]

Map

Abisko is a popular outdoor destination due to its proximity to nature and relatively easy accessibility. Abisko is near many great national parks and hosts a trailhead on the spectacular Kungsleden hiking trail; at the same time, it is on the malmbanan railway between Narvik in Norway and Luleå , which means it can be reached by an overnight train from Stockholm quite easily. Abisko village is around the train station "Abisko Östra". The large and well equipped hostel/hotel "Abisko turiststation" lies at the train station of the same name, 2 km further west.

Torneträsk, on the shore of which Abisko is located, is the sixth largest and second deepest lake of Sweden, and the largest fell lake in Scandinavia.

Abisko is 80 km east of Narvik and 100 km north-west of Kiruna . It is easily accessible by car by the European route E10 between the two. Cars can be rented at the Tourist Office in Kiruna (closed from Friday 18:00 to Monday morning).

By plane [ edit ]

There are two main airports serving Abisko:

  • Narvik /Harstad Airport in Norway, 120 km west of Abisko , has direct flights to/from Oslo Gardermoen (operated by SAS, Norwegian), Trondheim Værnes (operated by Norwegian, Widerøe) and Bodø (Widerøe) Airports.
  • Kiruna Airport, 100 km south-east of Abisko, has daily direct flights to Stockholm Arlanda Airport (operated by Norwegian and SAS). It is connected to Abisko by train and buses run by " Länstrafiken Norbotten ".

By train [ edit ]

The two nightly trains from Stockholm to Narvik stop in Abisko, both in the village itself (Abisko Östra) and outside the mountain station (Abisko Turiststation). One is direct, whereas the other has a change in Boden . There are also two daily trains from Luleå or Narvik . There is a chair lift up Nuolja mountain operating in the summer from the tourist station. It also runs from 08:00 to 00:00 during the aurora season and is operated by the nearby STF hostel.

For moving around outside the villages, foot and ski (in season) are the main options. Roads are limited to the area along E10.

The Abiskojåkka delta is off limits in summer, to protect the nesting of birds.

There is a snowmobile route to Abiskojaure and onwards, turning back towards Riksgränsen along the border to Norway.

Abisko is a great place to observe Northern lights thanks to the location within the Auroral belt and its relatively dry climate and low cloudiness. Aurora Sky Station (a part of STF Abisko Mountain Station) is located on the top of the mountain Nuolja and can be reached by a 10 min walk from STF Mountain Station and from there by a chair-lift.

The tourist station organises various activities throughout the year, but the real attraction is hiking on the many trails, out in the spectacular wilderness of the national parks of the area. Winter offers cross country skiing and even some alpine skiing. There is a chair lift on Nuolja and two more alpine areas nearby at Björkliden and Riksgränsen .

There are three (partly coinciding) long distance hiking trails from or passing Abisko. They can be used also for shorter hikes, especially Kungsleden has good infrastructure.

  • Kungsleden (440 km), probably the best-known hiking trail is Sweden, to the south.
  • Nordkalottleden (800 km), the southern part of which partly coincides with Kungsleden and Padjelantaleden but also meanders among the Norwegian fells. To the north the trail continues via Norway, northernmost Sweden, the tripoint Sweden/Norway/Finland and Kilpisjärvi (190 km) to Kautokeino in Norwegian Finnmark (190 km more).
  • European long distance path E1 from Italy, north of Abisko mostly coinciding with Nordkalottleden.

Kebnekaise, the highest mountain in Sweden, can be reached from Abisko by Kungsleden, although Nikkaluokta is closer (see Kebnekaise and Nikkaluokta ). Kebnekaise fjällstation at the root of the mountain is the most common base for expeditions (also guided tours in season). The Singi mountain cabins (Singistugorna) at Kungsleden are another option for independent expeditions.

There are also other mountains in the 2,000 m (6,000 feet) range in the area.

  • 68.405278 18.685556 1 Björkliden . A downhill snowsport system.

Buy [ edit ]

There is a shop at the tourist station which caters for hikers' daily needs and also carries a selection of outdoor equipment, and some other shops:

  • MakoMat , Kalle Jons Väg 1, 98107 Abisko ( near Abisko Östra station, connected with the petrol station ), ☏ +46 980-669 30 . M-Sa 10:00-17:00, Su 11:00-17:00 . A shop with a petrol station and a restaurant/bar.

Eat [ edit ]

  • Tjuonavagge , Abisko Östra ( Inside the tourist station ). Serves up great organic food, buffet style, taking inspiration from the nature around it – reindeer meat with cloudberry jam anyone?
  • MakoMat , Kalle Jons Väg 1, 98107 Abisko ( by the Abisko Östra station ), ☏ +46 980 402 55 . M-Th 10:00–17:00, F–Sa 10:00–21:00, Su 11:00–19:00 . The restaurant offers à la carte food and a lunch menu.

Drink [ edit ]

The Storstugan pub inside the tourist station is the friendliest place in town to go for a drink. Rather fortunate, since it's also the only place.

Sleep [ edit ]

There's a bed and breakfast in Abisko village, as well as some summer cottages. The tourist station has hostel, hotel and cottage accommodation available. It is run by STF, Svenska Turistföreningen; as accommodation is considerably cheaper for members it may be advisable to sign up for membership before booking. Membership is also available at the reception. There is also a camping ground – although the right to roam basically entitles you to sleep anywhere except in the Abisko national park or by private houses, as there are not really any cultivated lands. In the national park camping is allowed at the tourist station, at Nissonjohka and at the Abiskojaure cabins.

  • STF Mountain Station Abisko .
  • Abisko Fjällturer , ☏ +46 980-401 03 . Lonely Planet describes it as a "backpackers delight", and few would disagree. Good-value accommodation in twin and dormitory-styles rooms. 250 kr .
  • Abisko Mountain Lodge , Lapportsvägen 35 , ☏ +46 980 401 00 . A small hotel surrounded by cosy cabins that offers a relaxation only possible in a rustic setting. 990 kr .

There is a quite good network of cabins, day huts and shelters along Kungsleden, other trails and commonly used routes. Mostly there is a moderate fee for lodging (470/150 kr per person for non-members). Also camping by cabins is usually subject to a fee (giving access to the facilities, such as possibly a sauna ).

About the accommodation

STF Abiskojaure lies in the Abisko National Park by the clear mountain lake Abiskojaure. The mountain cabin has a beautiful location on two popular long-distance hiking trails: Kungsleden and Nordkalottleden. The cabin is close to a family-friendly sandy beach with shallow water – perfect for a refreshing dip.

A shallow, child-friendly beach invites you for fresh dip in clear mountain water.   Many hikers stay several nights in Abiskojaure and do day tours. Alpine tours to Kartinvare Peak and an outing to Råvvetievvakakåtorna, located a few hours away, are popular tours. Close to the cabin is Bunkerhöjden, a fortification from the days of the Swedish military. The place was included in the system to defend the Malmbanan railway line. The shelter and the shields buried in the ground can still be studied.   This is how it works in a mountain cabin Our mountain cabins offer a simple and authentic stay in multi-bedded rooms with self catering. The rooms are different sizes with bunk beds and usually heated by gas stoves. On site you will be greeted by a cabin manager. As a guest you chop wood, fetch water from the stream or lake, wash up and clean up after youself.   Here we have gathered all the information you need for a stay in one of our mountain cabins www.swedishtouristassociation.com/stfmountaincabin

Routes North - Nordic travel guide

Hiking in Abisko National Park

With some of the best hiking in the Nordic region, Abisko National Park encompasses majestic mountains, alpine meadows, wooded valleys, gushing waterfalls, a 35-metre deep canyon and Scandinavia’s largest alpine lake.

Sweden's Abisko National Park has some of the country's best hikes.

High up in the Arctic Circle, it’s a pristine and varied landscape with some great hiking trails including Sweden’s best-known hike, the long-distance Kungsleden.

For more on this 430-km long trek, which begins in Abisko and traverses the park, see our guide to hiking Kungsleden .

Where is Abisko?

Up in Swedish Lapland, close to the Norwegian border, the Abisko National Park stretches over 7,700 hectares, with Lake Torneträsk on its northern border.

The nearest city in Sweden is Kiruna, about 75 minutes drive away (or just over an hour by train), though the park is actually slightly nearer to Narvik in Norway (an hour by car, or 90 minutes by train).

Despite its remote location, it’s surprisingly easy to get to, with the main E10 running along its northern edge and Abisko Östra train station less than 1km from the park’s eastern border.

A direct train runs every night from Stockholm to Abisko, taking about 17 hours.

Alternatively, you can fly from Stockholm to Kiruna (see our Kiruna guide for details) and get the train from there to Abisko .

The Kungsleden long-distance hike crosses Abikso National Park

Is Abisko good for hiking?

The short answer is yes! Abisko has loads of marked hikes of all lengths and for all abilities.

Hardcore hikers can spend days walking across the park along the daddy of all trails, Kungsleden, while there are also trails for less experienced walkers that take in the park’s stunning scenery.

In terms of steepness, the park’s trails range from an easy 35-metre elevation gain, suitable for families and beginners, to a strenuous hike with a 12,327-metre elevation gain.

The park is also well-equipped for hikers, with Abisko Turistation providing accommodation, information, a restaurant and shop where you can buy hiking guides, food and buy or rent gear for your trip.

You can hike in Abisko National park independently or on a guided tour.

Guides are based at the Turistation, who can give advice and information if you’re heading out on your own, or you can hire a guide or book to go out on a guided hike with a group.

But one of the really special things about the park is its location. Because it’s high up in the Arctic Circle, you can hike beneath the midnight sun in summer and see the northern lights in winter.

Our top three hiking tours from Abisko

Going on a guided hike can be a great way of exploring the park without any of the hassle, especially if you’re a solo traveller.

You’ll also get to discover and learn about the park from an experienced guide, who knows the best places to go. So, here are our three favourite hiking tours in Abisko.

Top of our recommendations is this early-morning guided hike to Bjorkliden to watch the sun rise.

As well as stunning views of Abisko, Lake Torneträsk and the Lapporten mountains you’ll get to see the sky turn pink and red as the sun appears over the snowy mountains.

We also love this hike along the Kärkevagge Valley to Sweden’s cleanest and clearest lake Trollsjön, located 815 metres above sea level.

Your expert guide will point out reindeer, buzzards, hares and maybe even sea eagles, as you walk along the rocky valley and up to the lake.

And even if there’s heavy snow, you can still get out to explore the park on this guided snowshoe hike . Travel over the pristine snow in silence to immerse yourself totally in the Arctic atmosphere and clean air.

Hiking trails and routes

Abisko has loads of hiking trails, so your only real limitation is how long you’ve got and how fit you are!

Even the shortest and easiest hikes are impressive, but if you’re healthy and time is no object, you can walk for days in the park.

Short hikes

The Naturum, right beside Abisko Turiststation, is the local tourist office and has maps, books and loads of info on short hikes in the park.

Here are some of the most popular shorter walks, ranging from a couple of hours to a full-day.

A round hike via the Abiskojakka canyon

This well-marked trail starts from the Naturum on an easy gravel track to the Abiskojakka canyon. It follows alongside the river on wooden boardwalks to the Marmorbrottet marble quarry and former meditation site.

You can walk to the Abiskojakka canyon in Sweden's Abisko National Park

Here the path splits and you follow the orange nature trail to Lake Njakajaure then over heathland back to the Naturum.

There are picnic spots and a museum en-route, and there’s a detour down to Lake Torneträsk and a reconstructed Sami camp.

It’s an easy 5km circular hike that takes around 75 minutes, and is suitable for families and inexperienced walkers. It can be done all year round, but is at its best from July–September,

Hike to the Nissonjohkas suspension bridge

This hike starts by following Kungsleden southwards. After about 3km, you reach the Marmorbrottet from where it’s a further 1km uphill to a swaying suspension bridge.

On the other side of the bridge is a campsite, with shelter from the wind and areas for permitted campfires.

To get back back you need to return the way you’ve come past a viewpoint over the canyon.

This 8km hike is slightly more challenging that the previous one, and takes about two hours to do the return trip. The best time to do it is from March to September.

The Ridonjira nature path

This beautiful hike takes you along Abiskoeatnu to Ridonjira, then follows a stream uphill through a birch forest. The trail passes a row of small waterfalls, then crosses heathland and flowering meadows.

The path runs beneath the cable car and then heads steeply upwards towards the mountain station. From here, you can enjoy beautiful views over the national park and surrounding landscape before heading back down the way you came.

Although it’s only 6km there and back, this is considered a challenging hike with an elevation gain of almost 550m, and will take around three hours.

If you want a shorter walk you can go back down in the cable car. Or, to extend the walk, follow the red markers for a further hour or so up to the top of Njullás, for great views from a height of 1169 metres.

The trail can only be tackled in summer, from June to early October, due to the risk of avalanches.

Hike to Kårsafallen falls

The hike to the Kårsafallen waterfalls is a moderately demanding route that passes through birch forest, pine forest and on boardwalks over beautiful marshland.

Abisko National park is home to mountains, lakes, rivers and waterfalls.

In summer, you should look out for capercaillie and Siberian jays.

The trail is marked with purple signs towards Kårsavagge. It is about 8.5km there and back, and takes just over two hours to walk.

Longer hikes

There are plenty of longer day hikes too that take in some beautiful parts of the park.

You can follow a trail to Kårsavagge in the western part of the park, or head southeast to Baddusdievva/Paddus, which is in the same direction as Lapporten/Cuonavaggi.

However, the most famous trail is Kungsleden which runs from Abisko south through the entire national park to Kebnekaise.

To tackle this, or any other multi-day hike, you’ll need to stay overnight in one of park’s designated campsites or at one of the STF mountain refuge huts.

Most of the longer hikes are summer-only: check this useful website to find out when the trails are open or closed and when they are at their most busy.

This famous long-distance hiking trail starts in Abisko and its first 100km or so run through the park.

Abisko to Kebnekaise is generally considered to be the most dramatic section of Kungsleden, with the trail going over its highest point, the 1105 metre-high Tjäktja Pass.

The landscape is varied with wide open grasslands, fast-flowing rivers, birch forests and lakes, as well as rolling hills and barren mountainscapes. Eagles soar overhead and reindeer can often be seen grazing.

The Abisko section of Kungsleden is around 105km long and most people take six or seven days to walk it. Much of the hike is across wooden boards over marshlands, with the  Tjäktja Pass being the most challenging section.

There are five STF mountain huts en route, with the STF Singi mountain cabin marking the end of this section of the trail.

Abiskojaure to Abisko to Lapporten then back to Abisko

You can also combine a couple of hikes to do a beautiful two-day walk that takes in mountains lakes, birch forests and river beaches.

You get beautiful views of the Lapporten mountains from Abisko National Park.

Starting from Abiskojaure, the first stage of this walk follows Kungsleden north to Abisko, a 15km hike that takes 4–6 hours.

You’ll need to spend the night in Abisko and the following day do the round walk from Abisko to Lapporten (27km; 7–8 hours), which takes in the remote mountain lake of Čuonjajavri and the beautiful Paddus viewpoint, a former Sami sacred site.

There’s STF accommodation at Abiskojaure and Abisko. The trail is at its best from June to September.

What can you expect to see in the park?

Although Abisko is one of Sweden’s most visited national parks, it’s still home to some rare species of flora and fauna.

It’s known for the pristine birch forests in the Abisko valley, but you can also spot Lapland alpine roses, polar flowers and several species of orchids.

In terms of wildlife, look out for the rare Nordic warbler, golden eagles, plover, moose, elk, lynx, mountain lemurs and ptarmigan.

abisko tourist station camping

Bears and wolverine also live in the park, though it’s very unusual to come across anything more than their tracks.

The park’s many varied landscapes include Mount Njullás, the Abiskojakka canyon, Mount Lapporten, waterfalls and the Čuonjajavri mountain lake.

Safety and being prepared

The best way to ensure you have everything you need is to go on a guided hike, but if you are hiking independently, make sure you’re well prepared.

You should always follow the park regulations. There’s no camping, other than at designated STF camping places, which usually charge a small fee (though you may get access to a sauna thrown in!).

And you can only light fires at designated camp fire spots: barbecue grills are not allowed but gas stoves are. You’re not permitted to fish, but you can forage for mushrooms and berries – for private consumption only.

Essential hiking safety tips

  • Check the weather conditions, and don’t go out if they are forecast to be bad.
  • Try to hike with a partner or, at least, make sure someone knows where you are and when you are due back.
  • Stick to the marked trails.
  • Always take a good map and a compass.
  • Don’t rely on a mobile phone as there’s no signal once you’re on the trails.
  • Wear layers and come prepared for rain. Bring waterproofs, a woolly hat and gloves plus sunglasses and sunscreen. The weather can change quickly at this latitude!
  • Bring water and plenty of snacks.

Where to stay before/after hiking

In our opinion, the best place to base yourself is the Abisko Turistation , which is in the park itself and the starting point for many hikes including Kungsleden.

It has a variety of accommodation from bunk-bed dorms to cottages and double rooms, plus a restaurant with good views of the lake.

And if you’re looking for something a little smarter, we like the cosy Abisko Mountain Lodge with comfortable rooms, a sauna and an excellent restaurant. It’s just outside the park, right by the train station.

Accommodation in Abisko Although Abisko has a small population, there are plenty of options for accommodations at any budget and comfort level.

Things to do in Abisko

ABISKO NATIONAL PARK

Most of the things you can do in Abisko are around Abisko National Park. Abisko National Park has something to offer year-round, with stunning mountain views in the summer, frozen lakes and alpine forests in the winter, and some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world.

Abisko National Park lies on the banks of Lake Tornetrask. The park is part of the 440-kilometre Kungsleden hiking route. For this reason, Abisko National Park attracts hikers of all levels year-round. The national park is easy to get to by train, bus or car from Kiruna or Narvik. Once there you can visit Naturum visitor centre, next to the highway and railway station.

From Cristina: Head to the STF Tourist Station and get a map with all the hikes available. Each one has a colour–my favourite is the purple one. If you are along the hike, you might spot reindeers, mooses or foxes!

Walk On a Frozen Lake

Abisko National Park lies on the shores of Torneträsk, the sixth largest lake in Sweden. Träsk is the local word for lake, and Torneträsk or Lake Torne is known for its majestic views and abundant wildlife. The lake is frozen by the end of December, and once it freezes visitors can walk out to the islands in the lake not far from Abisko, or cross country ski across the entire lake!

From Cristina: It might seem impressive to be able to walk on a frozen lake, but on Torneträsk the ice is up to 3 metres thick. You can even drive a car onto the ice and make a camp fire on the lake.

Chase (Frozen) Waterfalls in Abisko National Park

When visiting Abisko in the winter, Abisko National Park turns into a magical winter wonderland. Flowing into Torneträsk are beautiful waterfalls that freeze in the winter and turn into massive ice sculptures, frozen in motion as they tumbled from the mountains.

Just a short walk from the STF Tourist Station, you will feel like you’ve taken a trip to another world when you arrive to see the waterfalls. The staff at the Tourist Station can direct you on the map when you arrive, and it is about 15 minutes of walking from the STF.

From Cristina: If you’re up for a little more of a walk, the Silver Fjallet (Silver Waterfall) is an incredible, secluded hike. Silver Fjallet is close to Bjorkliden, and the trip will take you through the most magical natural beauty in Abisko.

Things to do in Abisko

FJORD TOUR TO NORWAY FROM ABISKO

There is no fjord in Swedish Lapland but Norway, our neighbour the north, has fjords just 1 hour away. The fjords are incredible natural landscapes created by glaciers moving over time and then melting into the ocean.

You can book a daily guided tour from Abisko to discover the magnificent fjords of Norway or you can rent a car. We are sure that you will have very beautiful photos in this fascinating geography .

Things to do in Abisko

HIKE KUNGSLEDEN TRAIL

Part of Sweden’s famous 440-kilometer Kungsleden route is located in the Abisko National Park. You can take a walk in Kungsleden at any time of the year and discover many points from rolling hills, to tall mountains to magnificent lakes. If you love long hikes, or if you just want to stop by a short part of the trail, this is the best opportunity to get up close and explore the natural beauty of Abisko National Park.

Follow the trails by yourself or book a guided hiking tour with an experienced guide who will explain you everything about the region. Read more about Kungsleden Trail

SKIING IN BJÖRKLIDEN

SKIING IN ABISKO

The ski center in Björkliden , which is only a few kilometres from Abisko, welcomes skiers from all over the world during the winter months. There is also an other ski center in the region, Riksgränsen , 35km far from Abisko.

Skiing is a part of life and a popular hobby in Sweden and Norway. You can easily rent a car and visit both ski resorts. If you don’t have your gear with you, you can rent it there and ski!

From Cristina: I am not an avid skier, but I love to go with my friends when they ski. You’ll find me in Bjordliden Cafeteria enjoying an aprés-ski hot chocolate with cream on top of the mountain. It’s the best view of Lapporten and the surrounding area! If you’re like me and not looking to ski, take a trip up to the top for the views and a warm drink at the cafeteria.

FISHING ON A FROZEN LAKE

You can fish in the lakes of Swedish Lapland or in the fjords of Norway at any time of the year. You might think that when the lakes freeze over, you won’t be able to fish, but the locals have been fishing on frozen lakes for centuries. A guide can show you how to drill holes in the ice and fish through the holes!

For the true Swedish Lapland experience, head out to a frozen lake and go ice fishing! If you want, you can fish under the midnight sun in the summer or you can have a real arctic experience on the frozen lake in winter.

ARCTIC TRAIN EXPERIENCE

Taking the train is one of the most convenient ways to get around Abisko, and it is also one of the most beautiful. The Arctic Train will take you from Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, to Abisko in about 15 hours of travel. After getting off at Abisko Train Station, you can reach our Lights of Vikings centre with a 2-minute walk.

What makes this long trip special is that you will enter the Arctic Circle on your journey and you will cross from an amazing landscape. You can also take the train to Narvik, to visit the Norwegian Fjords. The natural scenery in Abisko is so beautiful, it’s worth taking the train to see the area and sit back, relax and enjoy the views.

From Cristina: Don’t miss the train from Abisko to Narvik! The scenery along the way is amazing. Once you get to Narvik, visit Fiske Hallen for the best seafood in the area. Their specialties are salmon, halibut, cod and crab, and they are all delicious.

We would like to close our post by reminding you that respecting the local environment and wildlife is crucial to protect the fragile arctic during your adventures in Abisko.

Thank you for reading our guide on the best things to do in Abisko! We hope you enjoy your stay, and that you try some of these activities while you are here. We look forward to seeing you on a Lights of Vikings Tour soon!
