Charlie Spring

Charlie Spring

Character analysis.

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… in Southeast England in a small town with his parents and older sister Tori. His family is supportive and loving—especially his sister who is his closest confidant.

Profession… student at Truham Boys School. Charlie is an excellent student in all subjects (especially math). He has a few close friends at school, but he’s not a fan of many of the other students at his school. As an openly gay student, Charlie is often bullied. Things got so bad last year that he would eat lunch with his teacher to avoid harassment from the other students.

Interests… playing the drums. Charlie plays in the orchestra, and he often uses the drums at home to clear his mind. A fast runner, he was recently recruited to join the rugby team.

Relationship Status… single. He was “dating” fellow student Ben Hope. However, Ben insisted they keep their relationship a secret because Ben hasn’t come out yet. Ben would ignore him at school, not even talking to him in the corridors. When Charlie saw Ben kissing a girl, that was the last straw for Charlie. Charlie says he is looking for someone he can have a laugh with—someone who’s nice and kind and likes being with me. It seems that he may have found that with the school’s star rugby player, Nick Nelson. The only problem is that Charlie suspects he’s straight.

Challenge… overcoming his self-doubt and gaining confidence. According to Charlie’s friend Tao, Charlie has “always had a tendency to believe that him just existing is annoying for other people.” This causes Charlie to often get lost in his head and make decisions based on the idea that no one wants to be around him. However, his relationship with Nick helps him start changing this negative mindset.

Personality… nerdy, caring, and anxious. Charlie jokingly describes himself as a “gay nerd” due to his interests. He cares deeply about those closest to him and tries his best to be a supportive friend. Often saying he’s sorry, Charlie has lost his confidence given everything he’s been through. But hopefully, he’ll come to realize how special he is.

'Heartstopper' season 2 returns with a new dose of queer joy

Joe Locke and Kit Connor in the new season of Netflix's "Heartstopper."

When Alice Oseman set out to develop the sophomore season of “Heartstopper,” the megahit Netflix dramedy series adapted from her own webcomics, the author-turned-screenwriter knew she couldn’t — and didn't want to — make the same season twice.

“I want each season to feel like an evolution, to tackle new ideas and themes, and for us to see the characters changing and growing, while also preserving the hopeful heart of ‘Heartstopper,’” she said in a Q&A provided to the media by Netflix. “While season one followed a typical romance story structure, season two takes a deeper look into teen relationships of various stages and sees the characters begin to explore more complex emotional truths about themselves and each other.”

The show’s freshman run, which debuted to critical acclaim, reached Netflix’s Top 10 list in 54 countries and won five Children’s and Family Emmys last year, introduced the endearing love story of Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and Nicholas “Nick” Nelson (Kit Connor), two teens at an all-boys school in the United Kingdom who were seated next to each other in homeroom. After becoming fast friends, Charlie, who has been bullied since coming out as gay, began to develop a crush on Nick, the kindhearted star of their school’s rugby team, while Nick discovered that he is bisexual and eventually came out to his accepting mother, Sarah (Olivia Colman).

A scene from the new season of Netflix's "Heartstopper."

The new eight-episode season, which premiered Thursday, finds Nick and Charlie navigating the rose-colored experience of falling in love for the first time, including the anxiety-inducing act of baring one’s soul to a romantic partner, and Nick wrestling with when and how to come out to the rest of his family and friends.

“We wanted Nick and Charlie’s relationship to deepen and evolve and everyone to be swept up in the magic of that,” executive producer Patrick Walters, who has worked closely with Oseman on the TV adaptation, told NBC News in a recent video interview. “The main reason for this show to exist is to bring people happiness and joy, so wanting to show as much of that as possible was a big" priority in this season.

In the season premiere, Nick and Charlie can be seen spending a lot of time together after school and making out in each other’s rooms — so much so that Charlie’s grades begin to slip. Connor and Locke, who have struck up a genuine friendship between seasons and developed an evident ability to banter and improvise with one another, worked closely with Walters, director Euros Lyn and intimacy coordinator David Thackeray to make each intimate moment between Nick and Charlie feel different this season.

Patrick Walters accepts the Outstanding Young Teen Series award for "Heartstopper" during the 2022 Children's & Family Emmys in Los Angeles on Dec. 11, 2022.

“The intimacy is deepening and getting more familiar, but also more exciting,” Walters said.

In the premiere's opening montage , for instance, “Kit and Joe are so ready to play with one another onscreen, and there’s a real sense of mischief — Joe ruffles Kit’s hair, they push each other off a beanbag, they’re playing Mario Kart,” Lyn said, revealing that the actors filmed different moments of that extended sequence throughout the monthslong shoot last year. “There’s lots of opportunities for the two of them to be playful with one another because Nick and Charlie are really brilliant friends as well as lovers, and I think we wanted their evolving, intimate contact to come through.”

Lyn singled out a scene in the sixth episode, in which the characters are running through the corridors of a hotel during a school trip to Paris, as an example of just how comfortable Nick and Charlie have grown together.

“They arrive at the vending machine, and we just hold the shot for ages. You get a sense that they want to kiss, but Charlie wants to talk about what Nick’s just been through, and Nick wants to talk about what Charlie’s just been through,” said Lyn, who also serves as an executive producer. “You get a sense of this physical yearning between the two of them, but also this intellectual and spiritual attraction where they both care for each other so deeply playing alongside that.”

Joe Locke and Kit Connor in Netflix's "Heartstopper."

But while the show has not sacrificed the hopeful optimism that defined its first season, the latest chapter of “Heartstopper,” by design, feels more mature and grounded. Although he insists that his darkest days are behind him, Charlie confides in Nick about his mental health issues, including his eating disorder and history of self-harm, which are explored in greater detail in the later volumes of Oseman’s comics.

“Alice manages to show the dark things being referenced in dialogue, but she puts them in a scene when Nick and Charlie are coming closer together and there’s love in the scene, so once you realize that you’re like, ‘It’s not that dark,’” Walters said of the significant shift in tone, which fans had worried about. “There’s optimism in the act of him speaking to Nick about it and being brave in that way. The themes are a bit more mature, but it’s the same sweetness. It’s more of the teenage experience. Hopefully, it doesn’t feel overwhelming or triggering to people.”

The creative team has also been keen to explore different shades of the queer experience. Elle (Yasmin Finney), Charlie’s close friend who recently came out as transgender and has transferred to the neighboring girls’ school, wonders if she can make a relationship work with her best friend, Tao (William Gao), while pursuing her dream of going to an art college. Isaac (Tobie Donovan), the introverted bookworm of the friend group, begins to wonder if he may be asexual after kissing another student. (Oseman, herself, identifies as asexual and aromantic.) Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), a lesbian couple at Elle’s school, face a setback when Darcy doesn’t feel safe coming out to her homophobic mother.

Will Gao and Yasmin Finney in the new season of Netflix's "Heartstopper."

Tara and Darcy’s arc, which did not appear in the comics, “was a really scary storyline to tackle because we didn’t want the audience to feel like they were suffering and that they were at odds because they are perfect for each other and we do want them to have a happily ever after,” Walters explained. “But I think the point of that storyline was to show that when your home life as a young queer person is compromised, that’s a really serious thing and it can totally alter how people act and what they show about themselves to their loved ones.”

Having grown up during the time of the U.K.'s Section 28, which prohibited the “promotion of homosexuality,” Lyn said he feels “such a huge sense of pride” that a show like “Heartstopper,” which “feels like a really important part of that quest to find equality for LGBTQ people,” has resonated with both queer and mainstream audiences, who are now actively looking for authentic representations in the shows and movies they consume.

“You can be a teenager, you can be queer, and you can love without fear of being ashamed or being bullied, and when I was growing up, that wasn’t the case,” Lyn said, while acknowledging that freedom is not always the case around the world. “I felt incredibly unable to come out and be who I really was and to love who I wanted to love, and I think that revolution where people now feel empowered and have the freedom to really be who they are is something to celebrate.”

Euros Lyn in Park City, Utah, on Jan. 24, 2020.

Walters, who was effusive in his praise of Oseman as a first-time creator and showrunner who is open to collaborating with her cast and crew, said he has enjoyed watching videos of fans reacting to new “Heartstopper” content. “People watching the work that you’ve tried to make really right for them is always really connective, so I’ve been watching a few of the season two trailer reactions, and people seem so happy when they’re watching it,” he noted.

As a director who must put himself in the shoes of the characters at any given time, Lyn admitted that he has been reliving a version of his own youth by working on the show. “It’s actually been joyous and liberating, and hopefully a little bit of what I’ve felt is baked into the show and reflected out there and it’s what’s touching an older audience, who have these feelings of melancholy and yet joy as well,” he said.

Max Gao is a freelance entertainment and sports journalist based in Toronto. He has written for NBC News, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Sports Illustrated, The Daily Beast, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Men's Health, Teen Vogue and W Magazine.

Charlie Spring

Charles "Charlie" Francis Spring , portrayed by Joe Locke , is one of the two main protagonists in Heartstopper , This Winter , and Nick and Charlie , a supporting character in Solitaire , and has a cameo in Radio Silence . He is the younger brother of Tori Spring , the boyfriend of Nick Nelson , and is best friends with Elle Argent , Aled Last , Isaac Henderson , Tara Jones , Darcy Olsson , Tao Xu , Imogen Heaney , and Sahar Zahid .

Charlie is tall, standing at 5'11", and has a slim, lanky build. Charlie is white and multi-ethnic; his mother, Jane, is from the United Kingdom, and his father, Julio, descents from Spain, therefore giving him and the rest of his siblings a light tan pigment. He's inherited Jane's blue eyes, while inheriting Julio's black hair, though he's the only Spring family member to have naturally curly hair. He gets his hair cut early on in the comics, though he soon lets it grow out to a thick mop of curls, wearing a headband in bed. Charlie notably has signature dimples, appearing whenever he's excited or happy. Charlie's attire usually consists of plaid button up shirts, ripped skinny jeans, sweaters, and white Converse sneakers. With Nick, he's often seen "borrowing" his boyfriend's oversized jumpers or jackets. His wear of oversized clothing also stems from always feeling cold and feeling the need to hide his slim appearance.

In the television series , Charlie's height is shortened to about 5'9", and his face is more well-shaped. His attire remains the same, though he's revealed to have an extensive collection of Converse sneakers.

Personality

Charlie is high-strung and tends to overthink things. He is sensitive, and has a tendency to apologize a lot, something Nick takes notice of instantly. Charlie has a habit of masking how he feels in order to keep others happy. Charlie is incredibly empathetic, crying when Nick breaks down to him simply because "seeing [Nick] cry makes [him] cry". Most people, including himself, refer to him as a "gay nerd", loving to read [3] , dogs, and playing the drums. Charlie also appreciates the arts, loving Ancient Greek classical literature (having The Iliad and Brideshead Revisited posters) and Keith Haring's work. Tori describes him as being nice, a characteristic she believes is underrated and can be taken advantage of.

As a result of bullying, being outed, and the toxic relationship with Ben Hope, Charlie suffers from a plethora of mental illnesses. Although a group of kids older than him had stopped the teasing, the damage had already been done. Charlie mentioned how he used to self harm to deal with the pain, though he had eventually stopped. However, Nick starts to notice how little Charlie eats in public, and gets concerned when Charlie faints from exhaustion while they explore the Louvre Museum. He reveals that his anorexia stems from wanting the need to control something in his life, and it often flares up when he is stressed or upset. Though Nick attempts to adapt to Charlie's dilemma by bringing him in private to eat, his anorexia only gets worse. Nick tries to encourage Charlie to talk to his parents, Charlie has a tense relationship with his mother and causes him to be afraid that she wouldn't believe him. Eventually, Nick helps Charlie tell his parents his problem. But due to Charlie being placed on a waiting list to be seen by a doctor, Charlie eventually relapses into self-harm. Charlie is then taken to a psychiatric hospital for people struggling with anorexia, and is soon taken to see a therapist named Geoffrey. There, he is diagnosed with anxiety, depression, anorexia, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Charlie himself doesn't process all of the trauma he had endured until going to therapy with Geoffrey. Though he eventually gets his anorexia under control, he currently suffers from body dysmorphia, wearing bulky clothes to hide his body and staring at himself in the mirror in disgust. His body dysmorphia also affects his desire to be intimate with Nick, having trouble taking his clothes off and fearing Nick being disgusted by his size and scars.

In the unrevised edition of Solitaire , Charlie is mentioned to have attempted suicide, though neither the revised edition of Solitaire or Heartstopper explicitly state this.

  • Charlie is left-handed.
  • Originally, Oseman had said that his Hogwarts house would be Ravenclaw, however this was later changed to Slytherin as she believed it to be a better fit.
  • His MBTI is ISTP/The Crafter, but like most characters, he's mistyped and is actually ISFP. [3]
  • Charlie has a crush on the boys from The Ark , specifically Rowan Omondi . [4]
  • He is the only person allowed to call his sister 'Victoria' rather than 'Tori', and is the only person to do so occasionally (not counting Lucas and Michael .)
  • He started playing the drums when he was 9 years old.
  • He is always cold. [3]
  • His favourite film is Moonlight . [5]
  • His Instagram handle, as shown in the comics, is @cfspring and in the television series, is @charlie_spr1 .
  • His blood type is O-negative. [6]
  • His favourite bands include Muse , The Strokes , and Best Coast . He is also a fan of the music of Mac DeMarco even though according to Nick, he " thinks that he's a dickhead" .
  • He is a fan of Classics and Greek mythology. He has a poster of Homer's Iliad on his bedroom wall.

Spring Bedroom Decorating Ideas

  • Pinterest 7670

Here are 16 easy-to-do ideas for creating a beautiful spring bedroom.

MASTER BEDROOM

As the season changes and the weather warms up we should be thinking about spring bedroom decorating ideas. Not just to make our bedrooms pretty and seasonal but to make them cool and comfortable and inviting. Let’s do a little spring bedroom refresh! Here are some must-do ideas for getting our bedrooms ready for spring!

This post contains affiliate links. See our Discloser Policy .

Are you thinking about springtime and how to change up your bedroom decor for the warmer season? Let’s head to our master bedroom. Here are easy ideas so you can make a few changes in your bedroom to make it spring-ready!

charlie spring room tour

I think of our bedroom as a sanctuary. So everything I put into this room has to work with that adjective. Just the thought of coming into our bedroom and closing the door makes me feel relaxed!

The best spring bedroom decorating ideas are simple! And all these ideas are not only simple but smart! And they give a bedroom a spring feel!

Here are a few easy-to-do, spring-inspired things you can do to help create a relaxing and inviting spring bedroom.

DECLUTTER FIRST

Clutter causes stress. It is just the opposite of what you want your bedroom to be!

SUMMER BEDROOM

So the first thing to do is get rid of everything that does not belong in a pretty and peaceful bedroom!

Make your bedroom a clutter-free zone! And work at keeping it that way!

Even lots of things on a night table can clutter a room! So take a minimal approach to everything in a bedroom. Just doing this one thing will make your bedroom look and feel so much better.

LIGHTEN UP YOUR SPRING BEDROOM

MIRRORED ARMOIRE IN A BEDROOM

This tip has many meanings! Think light textures, light colors, light fabrics, light bedding, and light decorating!

First, open up those windows and take down heavy curtains. Give your windows a good cleaning so that beautiful natural light streams in!

We took down the woven linen drapes in our bedroom and replaced them with a light soft white linen curtain. What a difference! Just doing this one thing made our room look so much lighter and brighter!

MASTER BEDROOM DONE IN NEUTRALS AND SOFT AQUA

We also replaced our wide slat blinds with soft cellular blinds that retract up to the top of the window frame. Now we have a panoramic view of the world outside!

SPRING BEDROOM DECORATING IDEAS FOR YOUR BED

Choose a white coverlet.

A white coverlet is my go-to choice for all of our bedding. It’s a great foundation and perfect for a light cover layer.

BED IN A BEDROOM

Especially in warmer weather when the air conditioner is on, we don’t need a big heavy duvet but one nice mid-weight layer works great.

I’m so partial to a matelasse coverlet. They have a subtle patterned stitching on them that adds texture to the bedding. And the white works with almost any other bedding on your bed!

I get asked all the time how I keep white slipcovers or bed coverings clean. It’s so easy! Oxyclean! Works like magic! I’ve washed this coverlet countless times and it always looks so fresh and white when it comes out of the wash.

USE LIGHTWEIGHT QUILTS AND OTHER COVERS

Think about changing up all your bedding in the spring and summer. It makes sense to choose lighter fabrics, lighter textures and lighter colors and patterns.

SUMMER BEDDING ON A BED

For our master bedroom, I opted for this pretty Spa colored quilt with ivory ball trim from Ballard Designs. You can see it HERE .

I’ve loved this Audree Pom Pom quilt and shams for several years! So I finally decided to make the investment so I can use and enjoy how peaceful it makes the whole room look.

I switch up bedding in the fall and the spring. First of all, it feels so nice to put different bedding on my bed, and switching the bedding meets the sleeping comfort need for the new seasons.

We want to be comfortable when we sleep so knowing what bedding to choose is so important!

I’m not a duvet gal unless I use the duvet cover as a bedspread. The heaviness of even the lightest duvet makes me feel restricted. So, for me, I like a light quilt.

PILLOWS ON THE BED

Use decorative pillows on your bed any time of year! If you have a queen size bed like we do three Euro Shams work across the bed perfectly. Add another Euro Sham for a king-size bed!

I’ve used two Euro Shams on our queen-size bed in the past but two is just not enough. So don’t scrimp on the Euro Shams because you won’t be happy with the look!

BEAUTIFULLY MADE BED

Instead of adding lots of extra decorative pillows try adding one long bolster pillow in a pretty complementary color and print!

As usual, when the camera comes out Hobbes comes running. It’s the funniest thing! For this photo shoot I had to eventually put him in the basement!

PILLOWS ON A BED

This spring’s decorative pillow choices were so different for me! I usually love lots and lots of pillows but decided to have just one long pillow for the bed this spring.

I chose the 16 x 36 bolster pillow in this light fawn color. You can see it HERE .

ADD FLOWERS

Spring is all about flowers so use them in your bedroom!

FLOWERS ON A BEDSIDE TABLE

I love to use real flowers, but in reality, I most often use faux blooms in our bedroom.

Flowers are such a special treat and add lots of spring beauty to a room! I used these pretty faux white ranunculus. Ranunculus are just so pretty! If you love peonies then you might want to give ranunculus a try!

I found a white pot with raised dots in the basement and put the blooms in there.

The silhouette in the black frame is of my little granddaughter Emma Kate.

NIGHT STAND IN BEDROOM WITH WHITE FLOWERS ON IT

It’s amazing what a little bit of black in a room will do!

OTHER SPRING BEDROOM DECORATING IDEAS

I kept this room quite minimal this spring. So I used a glass jar to hold a few faux spring branches.

I just love the “movement” of these branches and how their leaves are sparsely opening up here and there.

JUG WITH SPRING BRANCHES IN IT

I also added a spring-inspired picture that reminds me to “bloom where you are planted”. You can see 4 pretty spring printables of mine and lots from other bloggers HERE . I’m sure you will find a spring printable you can use in your home.

Your bedroom is worth a little spring makeover! Make it a pretty and comfortable sanctuary!

Here are some other spring bedroom decorating ideas for your bedroom…

  • add a throw to the end of the bed in a spring color
  • linen sheets (I invested in linen sheets several years ago and that is all we use on our bed. I LOVE them. They just get softer and loftier with age. Not all linen sheets are the same. You can see the sheets we use HERE .)
  • wallpaper the wall your headboard is on with peel-and-stick wallpaper
  • add a bed tray to your bed with a vase of pretty flowers.
  • put a big oversized floral decal over your bed
  • add a rattan bench or chair to give your bedroom a warm-weather look
  • change out what is over your bed and add a trio of floral pictures
  • add a canopy of fabric on the wall in the back of your bed that goes to the ceiling and then drapes over your bed. Dreamy look!
  • add hooks and hang straw hats and baskets from them

Here are some sources for items or something similar in our master bedroom…

Hello, this is a lovely bedroom. Can you tell me where you got the bed skirt?

Hi Tracy, find the bed skirt on Soft Surrounding’s website.

I am doing a spring refresh in our bedrooms by replacing our honeycomb blinds. Our home is now 29 years old and this will be the 3rd set of open and bottom closing blinds. I always get white and use a more sheer white drapery as well. They provide privacy as well as allow sunshine in. I also like the look from the outside as they are very uniform. The price point varies, and they are available from many sources.

Yvonne, Thankyou for the beautiful ideas for a spring bedroom.Had to laugh when I saw Hobbs. My Tuxedo cat Ollie settles on my unmade bed each morning when he comes in from a night on the town. It’s a fight to get him off so I can make the bed.But we love all 18 lbs of him!

Hobbes is such a diva! He loves to have his picture taken. Ollie is such a cute name!

Hi! Where are the wall baskets from?

Hi Karla, I found these baskets locally and cannot find them online.

This stopped me in my tracks! This is the color palette I have in my master bedroom also, though mine is not yet finished. I have no pictures up because I haven’t seen what I love until now. The prints on either side of the bed are stunning! Could you share where these are available? Thank you!

Here you go Darla: https://rstyle.me/+mnMSWEOKIqaXgHlqvsACJw and here: https://rstyle.me/+W6fefGozxNtQfMEkYzqhGg

Can’t find the search area. Wanted to look at picks of coffee tables. Need some new ideas, Sorry. Joyce

Joyce, I don’t have that part of my site set up yet. Coming soon.

Thanks, every time I start to clean a room and move something things around I think “look and see how Yvonne put it”, lol. Look forward to you post each day.

Your bedroom looks so peaceful . I love your colors. My question , where did your bedskirt come from?

Thanks, Gloria

Can you tell me where you got your rug as well as the color and size? Your bedroom is a dream!

The rug is my absolute favorite! So worth the splurge. I’ve had it for about 8 years and it has worn beautifully! Right now it is on sale and ships free: https://rstyle.me/+p1_zG1iAq3je5dgO4EBNPQ

This is stunning! I was scrolling for ideas since we are renovating and I can’t wait to redo my bedroom inspired by this colour palette and decor. May I ask where you got the wardrobe? It’s beautiful.

Hi Lauren, I found our Armoire on Wayfair. It is from Hooker Furniture Co. I can’t find it in stock anywhere, sorry I can’t help more.

Where did you get your dust ruffles? Thank you

Hi, Jo. It came from Soft Surroundings. However, I don’t see it on their site right now.

What did you use for the bedskirt?

I found this bedskirt online at Soft Surroundings. However, I don’t see it on their site right now.

Your bedroom is gorgeous!! Would you mind sharing where you purchased your bedskirt?

Hi Angie, it seems the bedskirt is very popular! I found it online at Soft Surroundings. However, I do not see it on their site right now.

Where did you get your bed skirt? What’s it called? It’s all so pretty! Also, whats the color of your walls.

All the walls in our home are Simply White by Benjamin Moore. The bedskirt came from Soft Surroundings.Last time I checked I did not see it on their site.

Where did the bed skirt come from?

Hi Kathy, the bedskirt came from Soft Surroundings. I have not seen it on their site lately.

Where is the dust ruffle/bed skirt from? Beautiful room!

Hi Leslie, I found it at Soft Surroundings. It is even prettier in real life.

Where did you find the white quilt?

Hi Vicki, this quilt was a bit of a splurge. But it has lasted for years and years. I thow it into the washer and dryer and it comes out perfect. Here’s the link: https://rstyle.me/+ZVexm-f-d0b_ifohuhmowg

Hello! Love this room! Just beautiful! Question; if your bed is a queen, do you order a queen coverlet? Sometimes they seem short and wonder if a king size would work better. Thanks! Love your style, just gorgeous!

Thank you Michelle. Happy Spring. I have always orded a queen coverlet. I don’t want somethings that falls long over the sides of the bed, since I have a bedskirt.

Where did your dust ruffle/bedskirt come from. I have looked everywhere. What is it called?

Hi Sandy, I really hate writing answers like this… I can’t find it anymore either. I got it from Soft Surroundings, but don’t see it on their site. So sorry.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

charlie spring room tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
