AIDA Cruises is a German cruise line based in Rostock, offering informal cruises. • This was my second time with AIDA. This time I organized a trip for 8 people. Since they were traveling for the first time, maybe they will use AIda services again in the future.

Four terminals

Today, cruise traffic flows through four separete terminals: Filipstad, Søndre Akershuskai, Vippetangkaia and Revierkaia.

From 1 June 2023, Revierkaia will be Oslo's main cruise quay. The Port of Oslo is in the process of establishing shore power on the quay.

Søndre Akershuskai and Vippetangen will no longer receive cruise ships after 1 June, except for 8-9 calls that have been difficult to move.

Filipstad is used for cruises until future urban development. The Port of Oslo is working to make cruises more sustainable and is considering the possibilities for shore power here as well.

Cruise routes to western Norway and the Baltic States

Cruise ships visiting Oslo also travel to other destinations, including regular routes to northern European ports such as Saint Petersburg and Tallinn in the Baltic Sea. Another popular route takes passengers along Norway’s coast, and the many spectacular fjords.

Access to cruise ship quays

Quays in central Oslo are usually open to the public except when cruise ships are in dock. In order to comply with ISPS security regulations access to quays is restricted when cruise ships are in port.

How to Get From Oslo Cruise Port to Oslo City Center

Norway’s capital city Oslo has a big cruise ship harbor where huge cruise ships bring in thousands of passengers daily all year round. Oslo is a great city to spend a full day as a cruise ship tourist, but the first thing you want to do when arriving in Oslo is to get from the cruise port to the actual Oslo city center.

We’re going to showing you how to easily get from the Oslo Cruise Terminals to Oslo City center in this article!

The Oslo Cruise Port is located just south of the main city center, which is within walking distance of Oslo’s city center. The walk is between 4 and 15 minutes, depending on which side of the harbor the cruise ship docks at. But just keep walking north (away from the fjord where the cruise ship came from) to get to the city center.

It’s a pretty easy and relaxing stroll that will show you some of the popular tourist spots in Oslo along the way, and I urge you to walk if you are in shape to do so. If not, just get in one of the many taxis that will be waiting at the port.

You can also get on the Oslo Jump-On Jump-Off Tour Bus directly from Oslo harbor, which makes it super easy to get to all the amazing attractions and sights in Oslo. Tickets to this bus can be bought here:

Walking directions to get from Oslo Port to the city center

We’re using Oslo S (the main public transportation hub in Oslo) as Oslo’s city center in this article. This is where Karl Johan’s Gate begins, which will take you trough the main shopping street, ending at the Royal Palace.

To get from Oslo Cruise Port to Oslo City Center, just follow the harbor promenade until you are next to the Opera House, then keep walking straight ahead for another 2 minutes. Make sure you see the Oslo Opera House and MUNCH Museum on your right to make sure you are walking in the correct direction.

Most cruise ships docks at Revierkaia, which is the dock closest to the city center. The walk from Revierkaia to Oslo S is just 4 to 7 minutes.

If your cruise ship dock on the other side (meaning that you will be looking directly at Akershus Fortress), the walk is a bit longer. However, the directions are mostly the same; walk south until you pass the tip of the half-island, then head north, passing by Revierkaia on your way.

While this might sound complex, the mantra is just to follow the harbor promenade . The total length of the stroll is just over 1,3 km, and takes roughly 20 minutes or so. It’s a nice and scenic stroll, so I urge you to walk if you are able to.

If you’re not up for the walk, then just get in one of the multiple taxis that will be waiting at the cruise harbor. They will be lining up and waiting for cruise tourists to get in, so feel free to use them as you wish. Keep in mind that taxis are insanely expensive in Norway before you get in though !

There are no good public transpiration options (it’s just a few minutes to walk after all), unless the cruise line offers a bus to certain points in the city.

Color Line docks much further away

If you’re coming to Oslo with the Color Line cruise ship from Kiel, then be prepared to be docked a bit further away from the city. The Color Line Terminal is about 3 kilometers away from Oslo S, which means a brisk 40 minute walk to get there.

However, it’s far from a bad thing if you want to explore Oslo as a tourist. The Color Line Terminal is actually pretty close to Bygdøy (where you will find museums like the Viking Ship Museum ( closed for renovations until 2026 ), The Fram Museum , Oslo’s very own stave church , and many other attractions.

The terminal is also fairly close to Aker Brygge and the Royal Palace, so it’s a decent place to begin exploring Oslo after all.

The 2009-built AIDAluna cruise ship is the third Sphinx-class AIDA liner, with sisterships AIDAdiva and AIDAbella .

The vessel (IMO number 9334868) is currently Italy- flagged (MMSI 247255400) and registered in Genova .

History - construction and ownership

AIDA Cruises is a Rostock -headquartered subsidiary company owned by Carnival Corporation . AIDA is Europe's largest German cruise line (followed by TUI ) targeting younger and more active travelers. AIDA was founded in 1960 (as "Deutsche Seereederei") and in 2000 was acquired by P&O Princess Cruises, which merged with Carnival Corporation (shipowner) in 2003. AIDA's first World Cruise (AIDAcara) was in 2017-2018 (October-February) with 116-day roundtrip itinerary from Hamburg Germany .

The 2100-passenger ship AIDAluna pioneered the fleet's poolside/outdoor theater (dimensions 8 x 4.5 m). The vessel's godmother is the German fashion model Franziska Knuppe. The christening ceremony took place at Palma de Mallorca , on April 4, 2009, during the maiden voyage.

Besides the ship's staff and crew, AIDA cruise passengers are also served by Peper robots - the latest cyborg technology implemented fleetwide in 2016. These humanoid robots greet and guide passengers upon embarkation. They also assist them throughout the cruise by providing information and tips on onboard dining, entertainment, enrichment program (workshops, pre-scheduled events), casino and shopping promotions, shore excursions and tours. Pepper robots are mobile and communicate in 3 languages (English, German, Italian). They can also interpret human emotions by analyzing voice tones and facial expressions.

Decks and Cabins

AIDAluna staterooms (1025 total, in 18 grades) include 16 Suites, 480 Balconies, 186 Oceanviews, and 359 Inside cabins. The largest accommodations are the Aft-Facing Deluxe Suites (sized 400-470 ft2 / 37-44 m2, with private sundecks/wraparound terraces sized 270-540 ft2 / 25-50 m2).

The boat has 13 decks , of which 11 are passenger-accessible and 6 with cabins.

AIDAluna offers rich restaurants’ choice for her guests, such as the Rossini, the Markt-Restaurant, Buffalo Steak Restaurant, Bella Vista (serving pizza & pasta 24-hours per day), sushi bar. AIDAluna restaurants are open seating. The buffets give passengers the chance to try food from several countries. Good wines are available to try. The Markt buffet Restaurant is located on deck 9. It is self-service and has a diverse and rich buffet. There are no strict dress codes or fixed dining times. This area provides palm trees, hammocks, cabana-style beds, and an enormous Jacuzzi. Luna is AIDA's 3rd vessel (delivered by Meyer Werft Papenburg on March 16, 2009), which Maiden Voyage started on March 22nd from Hamburg . The 14-night one-way inaugural cruise itinerary (Hamburg to Palma de Mallorca) visited 8 port cities in 5 countries - Le Havre (France), Santander and La Coruna (Spain), Lisbon (Portugal), Cadiz (Spain), Tangier (Morocco), and Valencia and Barcelona.

The ship christening ceremony was held on April 4th, in Port Palma (Mallorca-Majorca Island, Spain) . The ship's godmother was Franziska Knuppe (1974-born German fashion model and actress).

After the Mediterranean, the vessel relocated to Northern Europe for a summer Baltic season, then it was repositioned to the Canary Islands for winter 2009-2010.

Fun fact is that she is also the godmother of AIDA's 14th fleet member - AIDAmira (fka Costa neoRiviera/now Ambassador Ambition) that joined the fleet in 2019.

The Theatrium is a 3-level entertainment complex transforming the Atrium into a Theater. There is also a 4D Cinema fitted with moving chairs. A biking station provides bicycles used on shore excursions in ports of call. A significant amount of indoor-outdoor space is devoted to sports. The Pool Deck area also acts as an outdoor entertainment space. Dining options include 3 informal buffet restaurants, three specialty restaurants (dining at extra charge), plus informal venues for light snacks, pizzas, coffee/tea.

All documents, signage and announcements on board are in German, as the majority of AIDA passengers are German-speaking Europeans (Germans, Austrians, Swiss). The crew is international, many of them well-speaking English.

AIDAluna refurbishments review

The ship's wetdock refurbishment 2019 (April 3-16) was at Blohm+Voss Shipyard ( Hamburg Germany ) and resulted in the following deckplan changes:

• A new lounge facility (Almhutte) is a lodge-style dining venue featuring traditional dishes from the Alps and live music performances. Almhutte represents an expanded restaurant concept with a gourmet menu offering complimentary specialties like pork knuckle, cheese spaetzle noodles, light snacks, draft beers. Service and food are complimentary, all beverages cost extra.
• AIDA Shopping World is a new retail via partnership with the 1879-founded Hamburg-based company Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co KG. AIDA Shopping World features an innovative design and 400 m2 (4300 ft2) retail space with special offers from world's most famous brands.
• Fujifilm Wonder Photo Shop is another new venue offering an interactive experience.
• All passenger staterooms and some public areas were renovated and modernized. All restaurants, bars and the SPA complex were refitted.

During refurbishment 2019, the cruise liner also received technical upgrades (related to shoreside power capabilities ), scheduled regular maintenance works (including stabilizers and propulsion units - bow and stern thrusters), Navigation Bridge refurbishment, diesel-electrical plant upgrades, exhaust system and ballast-tanks cleaning, hull coating works.

During the drydock in 2014 (April 26 - May 5, at Blohm+Voss) were conducted scheduled regular maintenance works (stabilizers, steering, body, machinery), installed new exhaust system (scrubber), renovation works (flooring, cabins, public areas, carpeting, new deck floorings). A face recognition system was installed at AIDA Photo Shop (reducing printing chemicals and paper consumption by 50%).
