Lima to Buenos Aires: Deserts & Dancing Tour

Lima to Buenos Aires: Deserts & Dancing

A really good mix of hiking, culture, and exploration. I really enjoyed this tour, as it covers so many places that aren't otherwise accessible on your own. Arguable, Inca Trail was the highlight, but there was so much more. Ballesta Islands, Lake Titicaca, the Yungas Road in Bolivia, steak in Salta, etc etc. I enjoyed Bolivia much more than I expected (the museums in Potosi were world class). You have free time to explore the big cities such as La Paz on your own if you choose. Only downside were some inflexibility in restaurant choice. Overall a good trip I'll remember for a long time.

Manaus Amazon Jungle Adventure 4D/3N

Each day trip was well planned, almost tailored to the individual interests of the traveller. The guides were very helpful to everyone. In my case, because of my age (75 years old) they were so conscious of that, even I did not asked for any special treatment and tried do things myself, they were always ready to help! They had a good sense of humour and were very, very knowledgable of the Amazon environment. Conrado made numerous efforts to let the group in the boat to catch a glimpse of birds, daulphins and sloths. They showed all what was promised and sometimes more. Thank you, I highly recommend this tour and this Company. Big high five!!!

Leaders and local guides were all exceedingly pleasant, informative and helpful. Accommodations were great. The logistics unfolded seamlessly. There was no doubt but that we were seeing and experiencing much more than visitors who did not have the benefit of Tour Radar/G-Adventure.

Amazon FAQs

Thinking about an Amazon trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests. Visit our Amazon Vacation Planning page for in-depth Amazon travel tips.

For many reasons, the best time to visit the Amazon is from June – November. During this time, the Amazon Rainforest experiences its dry season – meaning the water levels are lower, allowing access to forested areas and greater opportunities for land-based exploration excursions. However, it’s important to note that as the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon experiences approximately 250 days of rain a year, spanning all months. Despite having varying seasons, like the “wet” season (December – May), travelers should expect a few hours of light rain at any point in the year. The rain is what continues to keep the rainforests and its rare flora and fauna alive.

Yes, traveling to the Amazon Rainforest is safe! In Brazil’s main center for visiting the Amazon – Manaus, you’ll always have guided activities with expert naturalist guides to help you navigate the jungle. Outside of town make sure you have all recommended vaccinations, according to your doctor and that you take a Malaria prophylaxis. Although along the Rio Negro, where most travelers go, there are very few mosquitoes!

All Amazon lodges and cruises offer jungle walks guided by local professionals to get to know the vegetation. Discover the importance of medicinal plants, spot vibrant macaws and parrots, and learn to identify the calls of rare animals. While listening to the sounds of the animals in the jungle is a common experience, actually spotting the fauna can be difficult. Travelers may consider the Pantanal wetlands for wildlife spotting, as it is less dense than the Amazon. Piranha fishing is also very popular. Local guides can also take you to different areas where other animal species can be seen, such as the pink river dolphins or macaws. Alligator (jacare) spotting at night is one of the most fascinating activities.

In general, the Amazon Jungle is not dangerous for travelers! Animals in the Amazon are not aggressive, as there is plenty of food available. Even the aforementioned “alligator” is a “caiman,” the peaceful cousin of the crocodiles you have heard about from Australia and the Florida Everglades. Your guide will always make you aware of toxic plants or spiders. Most guides are from the local communities, knowing well the healing properties of the plants that surround you. The one element to be aware of is Malaria: there is no vaccination, rather prophylaxis you take before traveling to the Amazon and stop taking as soon as you depart.

If visiting the Amazon in Brazil, you’ll get to the Amazon rainforest mostly by flying into Manaus, or for a more remote experience, by flying into Alta Floresta, with its luxurious lodge, or into Tefé for the most remote experience possible. In Peru, the main access points are Puerto Maldonado, Manu and Iquitos. In Bolivia, it is Rurrenabaque, Coca in Ecuador and Leticia in Colombia.

No – There are different areas with different flora and fauna. The main difference is caused by the altitude. Most of the Brazilian part is at sea-level or only slightly above it, whereas in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, the rainforest sits on higher ground. The higher, the less dense the fauna is. Therefore, for example, if you are interested in birding, you would prefer the Peruvian Rainforest, as, due to the fauna being less dense, it is easier to spot birds. The Peruvian Amazon also offers some of the most luxurious river cruise ships such as the Aria. The Brazilian Amazon Rainforest offers travelers a wide range of lodges and cruises. Embark on a large cruise ship such as Hurtigruten or Iberostar, or a small, intimate cruise such as the Tucano. The Ecuadorian Amazon boasts Yasuni National Park, home to millions of species of plants, birds, insects, and mammals.

Typically, you would stay at a lodge or cruise along the river. It depends on what kind of experience interests the traveler(s). The advantage of a lodge is that your stay in the Amazon Rainforest can begin at any time, whereas cruises have set departure dates. While cruises offer plenty of departure dates, it can be challenging to be on a strict schedule. On the other hand, the advantage of a river cruise is that you see a vast extent of the rainforest, with different animals and vegetation, without needing to turn back after each excursion. Cruises also tend to include a stop at local communities where you can experience and learn about the lives of Amazonian locals. Whether you experience the Amazon on a cruise ship or nestled in a lodge, you’re sure to have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Reviews & RecommenDATIONS

“I spent a couple of days in the jungle alone with Josuel and also stayed at his house in Manaus. He organized everything the day before the tour and asked me what I wanted to do to customise the program to my desires. The jungle tour was amazing and Josuel is very knowledgeable. But hanging out with Josuel was a great experience in itself as he's a smart and pleasant guy with an inspiring life story. If you're looking for a unique adventure outside the beaten path, this is the way to go. Can't recommend it enough!”

“We spent 3 days in the jungle with Josuel. It was an amazing experience, Josuel is a very hardworking, sympathetic and enthusiastic guide . We had the chance to see a lot of different animals, he introduced us to a local family and we spent a night in the middle of the jungle where we built our own shelter. We would do this tour again, without a doubt!”

Lonely Plan-it: How to float down the Amazon and enjoy memorable meals around Manaus, Brazil

It’s almost impossible to understate the allure of the Amazon .

The world’s largest rainforest enjoys myth-like travel status among curiosity seekers and adventurers – despite being one of the muggiest, wettest and notoriously difficult places to navigate on Earth.

The contrasts in modernity, lifestyle, food, nature and personality between the megalopolis of São Paulo , Brazil ’s largest city, and Manaus , the Amazon’s largest city – 2691km (1672 miles) between them, as the macaw flies – are startling, especially so for two places within one same (huge) country. You can be certain that the capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas isn’t going to be anything like your home, either.

People load bananas into boats in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil

And therein lies its appeal.

Sitting at the confluence of the blackwater Rio Negro – the largest left tributary of the Amazon – and the khaki-toned Rio Solimões – the 1609km(1000-mile)-long, 80km(50-mile)-wide upper section of the Amazon – Manaus has defiantly dug in among one of Mother Nature’s most superlative environments, determined to live off a land that, while deeply unforgiving, serves up an exotic cornucopia of nature and nurture to those who respect its wonder.

A visit here is equally extraordinary: unparalleled biodiversity and feats of the natural world await outside a breakneck jungle metropolis, filled with far-flung foods, frenetic markets and river-driven way of life. Besides Belém in the neighboring state of Pará (the Amazon’s other big city of note), Manaus knows no peers. You’re in the thick of it here – and that’s precisely the point.

Children from the Iranduba riverside community welcome a boat with “Santa Claus” in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil

Step 1: Pick a time of year to visit

More wildlife during the dry season, or deeper access during the wet months?

The Amazon’s two distinct seasons – wet (high water) and dry (low water) – offer advantages and disadvantages that anyone visiting the jungle should carefully consider. The July-to-December dry season affords lower river levels and better wildlife-spotting potential from riverboat cruises. The January-to-May wet season is true to its name, bringing on rainier days and higher humidity, along with rising water levels that allow for better tributary access via such alternative transport methods as canoes.

June is the sweet spot: water levels remain high and scenery is at its greenest from the rainy season, but rainfall drops off as the jungle transitions to the drier period. The wet season obviously yields more mosquitos (one of the Amazon’s greatest nuisances), but in reality the difference is negligible – they remain a year-round menace. From a price perspective, costs rise during the Brazilian summer (December to February), so there are deals to be had outside of those months.

Step 2: Sort out your visa situation for Brazil

Check ahead for ever-changing policies.

While citizens from Australia, Canada and the USA have enjoyed visa-free travel for tourism stays up to 90 days for several years now, thanks to fluid politics and reciprocity agreements Brazil’s visa policies change more than most countries’. Case in point: beginning in January 2024, nationals of these countries will once again need a visa (citizens of the UK, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa and the EU remain visa-free at time of writing). It’s always best to both check (and apply, if necessary) well in advance of your planned travel dates at the website of Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs or an authorized third-party visa facilitator. You will need to show your flight details as part of your application.

Passengers sit in their hammocks while departing on a transport riverboat in the Amazon from Manaus to Maues, Brazil

Step 3: Decide your desired level of comfort

A rustic wooden ferry, or luxurious cruiser?

The Amazon is one of the world’s last great bastions of passenger river travel, and navigating the jungle via riverboat is the stuff of intrepid adventurers’ bucket lists. Boats for both travel and leisure depart Manaus regularly, running the gamut in quality and comfort. Budget motor yachts and rustic passenger ferries make up the jungle’s “highway” system, transporting residents and tourists to river settlements up and down river from Manaus. More-luxurious river cruises for tourism purposes also ply the region’s waters.

Are you looking for a refined experience or up for roughing it? The latter means stringing up a hammock on an open deck of a wooden ferry with up to 300 fellow travelers; luxurious cruises and floating resorts with all the finer things offer a more polished experience. You know what kind of traveler you are – important to keep in mind as you plan your Amazon trip.

Step 4: Consider excursion options from Manaus and book ahead as far as possible

The Amazon is yours to discover – with some advance planning.

Wildlife and unspoiled nature have long been absent from Manaus’ direct vicinity, so the majority of the city’s visitors will be coming or going from adventures further afield in the jungle . That’s not to say there is nothing to do in the city itself – the wonderful Teatro Amazonas , a stunning belle-époque confection built during a rubber-boom bonanza, comes to mind – but Manaus is, in most cases, a (fascinating) transit point. Needless to say, the Amazon is popular – so always book excursions and jungle lodges as far in advance as possible. Here are some of the most in-demand excursions from Manaus.

Encontro das Águas

The city’s spectacular meeting of the waters – which merge but don’t seem to mix – is the easiest and most popular excursion from Manaus, its location just east of the city center making it for a perfect quick trip. The dramatically dissimilar Rio Negro and Solimões come head to head just off Manaus’s shoreline, refusing to yield for some 6km (4 miles). It makes for a wild natural phenomenon and is the city’s principal must-see, usually included on any day trip and/or passage to river lodges.

One of the closest pristine environments to the city, Rio Urubu’s intact ecosystem affords wildlife viewing opportunities aplenty within its dense flooded-forest environs, just two hours by road from Manaus. Jungle hikes, visits to local communities, overnight forest camping and a few notable jungle lodges are highlights here. Proximity to Manaus makes for a convenient option for time-limited visitors.

Some 100km (62 miles) and three hours by boat southeast of Manaus, the Juma River unravels within a 17,000+-acre preserve that, while surrounded by ever-encroaching modernity, remains a rich and worthwhile ecosystem and preserved biodiversity hotspot. The river is so serene, folks joke it harbors a characteristic, lake-like calmness. With easy access from Manaus, it’s a popular spot, and several jungle lodges operate here. Top-end Juma Lodge comes highly recommended for its sustainable architecture and eco-forward ethos (think photovoltaic solar energy, 90% local community staff, etc).

The view of the river from the prow of a boat in Anavilhanas National Park, Brazil

The preserves and parks of the Rio Negro basin

The largest blackwater river in the world, the Rio Negro is the gateway to deeper Amazonian exploration and home to several notable national parks. Parque Nacional de Anavilhanas , a half-day boat ride northwest of Manaus, is home to some 400 river islands (at high-water level, an eerie sunken forest effect makes for spectacular photos) and a jungly patchwork of nook-and-cranny-fed waterways that stretch some 130km (81 miles). Further west, Parque Nacional do Jaú , Brazil’s second-biggest national park, clocks in at 23,000 sq km (8880 sq miles) – one of the world’s largest patches of preserved tropical rainforest. Finally, Reserva Extrativista Baixo Rio Branco-Jauaperi , 500km (311 miles) upstream from Manaus, requires more determination and time to access – but those who make the effort are justly rewarded with some of the Amazon’s best wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Step 5: Pack appropriately

Don’t count on purchasing anything you forget.

This one might seem obvious – yet it’s crucial to keep in mind that popping into a nearby shopping mall won’t be an option. If you’re going the rustic-riverboat route, you’ll want to bring cavalcade of supplies: hammock, rope, light bedsheet, dry snacks, a good book or two, extra toilet paper, mosquito net, familiar medicines, anti-bacterial Marseille soap, thin cable and lock (to secure your bag to one of the boat’s center poles), and so on. (At jungle lodges, some of those basic necessities will generally be on hand.) Regardless of the trip you choose, you’ll also want a bevy of long, breathable, waterproof clothes, waterproof shoes or boots, a raincoat or parka, sunscreen, hat, binoculars, water bottle and filter, and plenty of serious mosquito repellent (the natural, organic stuff won’t cut it here). Malaria risk is lower in Manaus and the lower Amazon basin, so drugs for malaria prophylaxis aren’t entirely necessary. Still, speak with your doctor before you make any final decisions.

Step 6: Plan out your Manaus meals

Dig into fascinating local cuisine.

The Amazon serves up some of Brazil’s best and most interesting restaurants. Reserve a table in advance at Banzeiro , a long-standing Amazonian dining icon where Chef Felipe Schaedler flips the jungle’s bounty into surprising and unique fare, including the unforgettable crunchy tambaqui ribs and an arsenal of locally driven delights. At Biatüwi , Brazil’s first Indigenous-run restaurant, Sateré-Mawé Chef Clarinda Ramos showcases the Amazon-basin delicacies of nearby local communities. And don’t miss the city’s signature sandwich, the x-caboquinho , made with curd cheese, fried pacovã banana and tucumã shavings on French bread.

A pink dolphin emerges from the waters of the Amazon, Manuas, Brazil

If I could do it all again…

I have experienced the Amazon from all available extremes: rustic passenger boats, a midrange cruise and several luxury jungle lodges. Honestly, each option offers a unique and extraordinary experience – with a few caveats. Staring into the forest canopy over several days from a riverboat can become tedious – you don’t see as much wildlife as you imagine (you’ll see some pink dolphins in the river if you’re lucky, but most animals are hidden deeper into the rainforest), and there isn’t a lot to do besides drink and swap traveler tales. Excursions from river lodges are better, with the added bonuses of expert guides, more-comfortable accommodations, better food and a (potential) escape from mosquitoes.

How to visit the Amazon rainforest in Brazil: A complete guide

amazonas tour brazil

On my latest trip to Brazil, I had the opportunity to tick off a major bucket list item of mine – to visit the Amazon rainforest. It’s a destination that had fascinated me since I was a child, so it was a dream come true to finally see this mystical place with my own eyes.

Due to the immense size of the Amazon, planning a trip here can feel confusing and overwhelming. Therefore, I’ve put together this guide where I’m sharing my best travel tips on how to visit the Amazon rainforest in Brazil.

Covering an area of 6.7 million km2 (2.6 million sq mi), the Amazon spans 40% of South America and is by far the largest rainforest in the world. The Amazon basin is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet and is believed to be home to 10% of all known species.

A squirrel monkey with yellow arms clinging to a tree branch in Alter do Chão, Brazil

Known as the Lungs of the Earth, the Amazon tops the wishlist of many travelers from around the globe and is an ideal destination for those looking to connect with nature.

Whether you want to explore the depths of Brazil’s jungles, lock eyes with wild animals, taste wonderful exotic fruits, relax on unspoiled beaches or cruise down the Amazon River – you will make memories that will last a lifetime! And this Amazon rainforest travel guide will show you exactly how to do that.

Without further ado, let’s dive into all the things you need to know for planning a trip to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil.

How to get to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil?

The best way to get to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil is to fly to Eduardo Gomes International Airport in the city of Manaus. Known as the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon, Manaus is the main tourist hub in the region and the capital of the Amazonas state.

You can take a direct flight from Sao Paulo to Amazon rainforest (Manaus), which takes about four hours. There are also direct flights to Manaus from other major cities in Brazil, such as Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, as well as from Miami, Panama City and Bogota.

Alternatively, you could also fly to Santarem, which is a smaller town about 600km (370 mi) east of Manaus.

We started our Amazon trip by flying to Manaus and finished it by flying out of Santarem. To get from Manaus to Santarem, we took a ferry down the Amazon River. I’m explaining more about why we did this further below.

How many days do you need?

I would say three days is the minimum amount of time that you should set aside for visiting the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. In three days, you can do a handful of excursions, which will give you a glimpse of what this enchanting region has to offer. However, you’d only be skimming the surface.

I highly recommend spending a week or even 10 days exploring the Amazon rainforest if you can. This way, you’ll have enough time to visit several different areas of the Amazon region and enjoy a wider variety of experiences – from exploring jungles and rivers to relaxing on beaches and visiting waterfalls.

a woman standing in the calm waters of Tapajos River, watching the sunset

It’s also a good idea to have a few extra days as a buffer in your Amazon rainforest itinerary in case the weather turns out to be bad and prevents you from doing some of the activities you had planned (happened to us on a few occasions). In total, we spent 9 days in the Amazon but I wish we had a few more days.

If you’re interested in seeing more of Brazil (which I hope you are since there are countless amazing places to explore!), check out my post on 3 Brazil itinerary options to find inspiration for planning out the rest of your trip.

a couple sitting on a dock surrounded by giant water lilies, one of the best places to visit in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil

Best time to visit the Amazon rainforest in Brazil

There are two distinct seasons in the Amazon – the dry season and the rainy season. They are also known as the low water season and the flood season. Don’t let the word ‘dry’ fool you though. Remember that it’s still a tropical rainforest so you should expect to see some rain every day regardless of when you visit.

There’s no clear ‘best’ time to visit the Amazon rainforest in Brazil since there are pros and cons to both seasons. The rainy season typically runs from January to July and the dry season from August to December. The temperature remains hot throughout the year (around 27-30°C or 80-86°F).

A boat tour through the jungle is one of the best things to do on a trip to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil

The advantages of visiting during the dry season are less rain, fewer mosquitoes, better access to the river beaches and better trekking options since the jungle won’t be flooded.

The main advantage of visiting during the rainy season is that you’ll have better opportunities for boat/canoe tours. Higher water levels make it possible to access smaller canals and get deeper into the flooded forests, which are locally known as igapó .

Be aware though that once the rainy season has kicked in and the water levels have risen (February-July), you won’t be able to enjoy the white sand beaches along the river banks, as they will be fully flooded.

two men sitting on wooden boats in front of a white sand beach in Alter do Chão

In some parts of the Amazon, the water level in the rivers rises by a whopping 12 meters (40 ft) by the peak of the rainy season. I find this absolutely mind-blowing!

We visited the Amazon from the end of December until the beginning of January, which is a transitional period from the dry to the rainy season. We experienced a lot of rain in the Manaus area but only a little rain in the Santarem-Alter do Chão area. This shows that the weather in the Amazon can be quite unpredictable.

How to visit the Amazon rainforest in Brazil?

One of the best ways to visit the Amazon rainforest in Brazil is to stay at a jungle lodge in the region around Manaus. The majority of the lodges are within a 2-3 hour drive or boat ride from Manaus and usually offer all-inclusive packages that include transfers from Manaus, all meals and several excursions on each day.

During the excursions, you’ll be accompanied by local guides who take you on jungle walks and boat tours and share their knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Amazon.

A woman standing on a wooden walkway at a jungle lodge in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil

As an alternative to a lodge, you could take an Amazon cruise where you’d stay on a liveaboard riverboat and go on daily rainforest tours. You could also base yourself in Manaus and take day trips, which is probably the cheapest option.

Besides staying at an Amazon jungle lodge or taking a river cruise, I also recommend visiting Alter do Chão for a totally different experience. This small town has a laid-back bohemian atmosphere and is known as the Caribbean of the Amazon thanks to its fabulous white sand river beaches. Be sure to read my Alter do Chão travel guide for more tips on what to expect when visiting this cool little town.

To get to Alter do Chão from Manaus, you’d need to either fly or take a ferry down the Amazon river to Santarem. We chose the latter option. From Santarem, it’s just a 35km (22 mi) drive to Alter do Chão.

To give you an idea of how to plan your Amazon rainforest trip and how many days to allocate to each place, here’s an outline of our Amazon itinerary:

  • Day 1-3: Flying to Manaus and staying at a jungle lodge
  • Day 4-5: Taking a ferry from Manaus to Santarem
  • Day 6-8: Exploring Alter do Chão
  • Day 9: Flying out of Santarem

Amazon rainforest lodges in Brazil

There are numerous jungle lodges to choose from around Manaus, ranging from more affordable ones with very basic amenities to more stylish lodges with comfortable bungalows.

Here are my top picks for Amazon rainforest lodges for varying budgets:

BUDGET: Amazônia Exxperience One of the cheaper Amazon lodges. The rooms are rustic and very simple but apparently, the excursions and the food are wonderful!

MID-RANGE: Dolphin Lodge This is the lodge where we stayed for two nights and I think it’s one of the best mid-range options you can find. It’s a small rustic family-owned lodge in a tranquil location overlooking a river and surrounded by the rainforest. We stayed in a private bungalow perched on stilts high above the forest floor and took daily tours with our knowledgeable guides to explore the surrounding jungle, lakes and rivers.

Staying at a jungle lodge is one of the most common ways to visit the Amazon rainforest in Brazil

LUXURY: Juma Lodge If you’re looking for a little more comfort, Juma Lodge is the place for you. It is one of the most famous lodges in the area and has a swimming pool and spacious bungalows with hot water showers.

Which vaccines are needed for a trip to the Amazon?

You are not required to have any vaccinations to visit the Brazilian Amazon. However, vaccinations against hepatitis A, typhoid and yellow fever are recommended.

Some people also choose to take pills against malaria, a disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Alternatively, you could do your best to protect yourself from mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves and trousers when in the jungle, using a mosquito repellent and sleeping under a mosquito net.

Which animals can you expect to see?

The Amazon jungle is home to countless species of wild animals that inhabit its rivers, treetops and forest floor. It’s one of the most biodiverse places in the world after all!

With that said, many of the animals are extremely well camouflaged or hiding deep in the jungle, far from the curious eyes of tourists. Therefore, you definitely shouldn’t expect to see jaguars, anacondas and tapirs around every corner.

The most commonly seen animals in the Amazon rainforest are monkeys (howler monkeys and squirrel monkeys), caimans, freshwater dolphins (pink and grey ones), sloths, frogs, tarantulas, piranhas, and birds such as herons, macaws and toucans. During our 9 days in the Amazon, we saw all of these animals, though some of them were either very far or revealed themselves only for a brief second.

Seeing this adorable sloth (pictured below) from such a close distance was definitely one of the highlights of my Amazon trip in Brazil:

A sloth hugging a tree; one of the most common animals to see in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil

In terms of wildlife spotting, I’d say I’ve had a better experience in Costa Rica , the Galapagos Islands and Bonito (in Brazil) than in the Amazon. But the number of animals you see and how close you see them often comes down to luck! Nevertheless, I think the Amazon is a fantastic place to explore and still offers great chances of seeing wildlife.

A problem with wildlife tourism in the Amazon

While exploring the Amazon region, it became clear to me that unfortunately unethical wildlife tourism is extremely widespread there. The vast majority of the Amazon rainforest tours on offer include direct interactions with wildlife, which is problematic.

These are activities like petting and swimming with pink river dolphins, hugging sloths and monkeys, taking photos with a baby caiman in your hands, feeding wild animals and so forth. This article by National Graphic explains pretty well why such interactions are harmful to wildlife. Wild animals should stay wild and we shouldn’t treat them as our pets or photo props.

Sustainable and responsible ecotourism in the Amazon still has a long way to go. Therefore, I encourage you to choose your tour operators and lodges wisely.

I was happy to see that the tours we did with Dolphin Lodge didn’t involve any direct contact with wild animals.

Best things to do in the Amazon rainforest

Thanks to its unique geography and fascinating flora and fauna, there’s no shortage of amazing places to visit and things to do in the Amazon rainforest. Here are some of the best ways to get to know this region and its wonders.

Jungle walk: Go on a trek in the rainforest with expert naturalist guides who will show you and educate you about a variety of exotic plants and wildlife. This was one of my favorite activities in the Amazon.

a man holding wild cacao fruit with white flesh in his hand

Canoe or boat tour: Take a tour on the calm waters of small rivers and lakes, where you’re likely to spot caimans, river dolphins and numerous birds. There are also piranha fishing tours and nighttime boat tours for spotting nocturnal animals.

Giant Amazon water lilies: Locally known as Vitoria Regia, these aquatic plants are the icon of the Amazon and can be found in ponds and lakes. They’re famous for their enormous leaves, which can reach up to 3 meters in diameter and can apparently hold the weight of a child or a small adult!

The beaches of Alter do Chão: Relax on beautiful sandy beaches along the Tapajós River, in an area nicknamed the Caribbean of the Amazon. Unlike the brown and murky Amazon River, the Tapajós boasts clear blue waters perfect for swimming.

Ferry on the Amazon River: Hop on an authentic ‘no-frills’ ferry used by the locals and sail 740km (460 mi) down the Amazon River to reach Santarem. You won’t see much wildlife on this journey since it’s a transportation ferry but it’s a unique experience nevertheless. Watching the sunset on the Amazon River is something I’ll never forget.

A colorful sunset on the Amazon River, viewed from a ferry sailing from Manaus to Santarem

Survival tour: On a survival tour in the jungle, you’ll learn about medicinal plants, fishing techniques, how to build camps, make fire etc. There are one-day tours (such as this one ) as well as multi-day tours where you’ll camp in the rainforest.

Waterfalls at Presidente Figueiredo: This area is known for its waterfalls, caves and natural pools surrounded by gorgeous lush jungle. You can visit it on a day tour from Manaus . I would have really loved to explore this area but unfortunately couldn’t fit it into my Amazon itinerary.

Meet a local community: Take a tour to an indigenous community to learn about their way of living, their customs and agricultural practices.

Meeting of the waters: A unique phenomenon where the black waters of Rio Negro and the light brown waters of the Solimões River meet and run side by side for several kilometers before mixing.

Map with the main points of interest

On the map below, I’ve marked the main points of interest that I mentioned in this Amazon rainforest travel guide as well as the lodges I recommended. Click on the icon in the top left corner of the map for more details.

Is it safe to visit the Brazilian Amazon?

Yes, the Brazilian Amazon is safe to visit. I can say that I felt totally safe throughout our entire Amazon trip. However, there are still some risks and dangers that you should be aware of.

Your biggest threat is mosquitoes that might carry malaria or yellow fever, which are both serious diseases. Always take precautions to protect your skin from mosquito bites.

Another common risk is getting an upset stomach due to the different kinds of bacteria in local food and water, which foreigners’ stomachs are not used to. To reduce your chances of getting sick, avoid drinking tap water during your Amazon trip in Brazil.

Also, it goes without saying that you shouldn’t wander into the depths of the jungle on your own when visiting the Amazon in Brazil. Always go with an official guide. Without one, it’s easy for tourists to get lost or wander into unsafe territories.

In terms of wildlife, there definitely are some dangerous animals in the Amazon but it’s unlikely that they’d attack you unless you provoke them or get too close. To avoid potentially dangerous encounters with animals, do your jungle hikes and river explorations with a guide.

A couple running on a sandy deserted beach near Alter do Chão, the state of Para

What to wear in the Amazon rainforest?

Since it’s going to be hot and humid, shorts, T-shirts, flip-flops, a swimsuit and a hat to protect yourself from the sun are a must. It’s also going to rain so it’s a good idea to bring a rain jacket.

Trousers and long sleeves are necessary when going on jungle walks in order to protect yourself from mosquitoes and sharp plants. Also, it’s apparently better to dress in light, neutral colors to avoid mosquitoes.

Remember to also bring sneakers or hiking boots. Alternatively, your lodge might provide you with rubber boots if you’re going to walk in particularly muddy areas.

I wore long leggings, a linen shirt and sneakers during our hike in the jungle and I think it was a great choice – I wasn’t feeling too warm and I didn’t get any mosquito bites.

In terms of fabrics, aim for light and breathable ones because it’s almost impossible to dry your clothes in the humid rainforest.

Hey! Can you tell me what the cruise was you booked from Manaus to Santarem? How was it and how was the price? Thanks! Michael

Hi! It wasn’t really a cruise what I took. It was a very basic old transportation ferry used by the locals. We just went to Manaus port the day before and bought our ferry tickets there from the ticket booth. The price for a cabin was around 470 BRL but if you’re willing to sleep in a hammock like most people do, it’s much cheaper.

Hi! I would like to visit Manaus and visit the Amazon rainforest. Can I take an uber to the Amazon? If yes, how long it takes? Can I spend just two hours there? Are there bathrooms there? Thanks.

Hi Javier. Manaus is already in the Amazon rainforest. I don’t think taking an Uber to a random place on your own is a good idea. I recommend taking a guided tour instead. This usually involves getting on a boat, sailing along the rivers and hiking in the jungle not driving around in an Uber.

Can you send me an email of your Brazil trip with hotel info etc. what you posted is something we as a family can probably do. Thanks in advance.

Hi Daniel. The info about where I stayed is in the blog post 🙂

Arrival to Manaus, Brazil

The city of Manaus is in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest. While flying in today, make sure to look out the window for your first unforgettable view of the green carpet of the rainforest below. Depending on the time of your arrival, once you have settled into your accommodation in Manaus, the rest of your day is free to explore the city at the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon on your own. We recommend visiting the beautiful Amazonas Theater and Opera House. As well as the lively Adolpho Lisboa Market where you can indulge in the sweet fruits of the Amazon. Tonight, head out to one of the local restaurants in Manaus where you can enjoy fresh and locally caught fish straight from the Amazon. Included: Private transfer from the airport to your hotel; Accommodation in Manaus. (Meals – None) Show more

Into the Amazon

You will embark on your adventure from Manaus, the city at the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon , and take a boat to see the Meeting of the Waters. This famous sight is where the almost black waters of the Rio Negro and the brown, sandy ones of the Rio Solimões meet up. Due to the difference in temperature, speed, and density, these waters run side by side for over 3 miles before mixing. This is just the appetizer to the rest of your Amazon experience.

You’ll feel the excitement build as you continue your journey deeper into the Amazon where you’ll be able to spot wildlife on the banks and in the river. You’ll pass by local villages for a glimpse of what life is like in the Amazon before finally arriving at your Amazon lodge.

Have some lunch, take a siesta, or just listen to the sounds of the Amazon before you start the afternoon excursions. You might particularly enjoy a guided canoe trip through the Igarapes (Amazon waterways) and Igapos (flooded forests) near to the lodge. It is a great introduction to the wildlife abound, and the Amazon’s flora and fauna living on your doorstep.

Following an action-packed day, you can relax at your lodge over drinks and dinner before falling asleep to the sounds of the wildlife around you.

Note: Activities may vary upon the selected lodge.

Included: Private transfer to the port; Activities at the lodge, Accommodation in the Amazon (Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Exploring the Amazon

Rise and shine bright and early, trust us it’s worth it to watch the sunrise and the jungle come alive! The very early morning is the best time to spot many of the rainforest’s wildlife inhabitants and is also before the heat and humidity of the day kicks in.

After sharing your breakfast with some curious monkeys while listening to the beautiful soundtrack of the rainforest, you’ll go on a hike through the jungle. Here your knowledgeable local guide will be on hand to help you spot wildlife and introduce you to the forest’s medicinal plants.

Following lunch back at the lodge and having freshened up there’s plenty more to explore – so what are you waiting for, it’s time for a spot of fishing with a difference. Today’s catch of the day is piranha! Despite their man-eating reputation, these toothy fish usually feast on fallen fruit instead of people. So you’ll sometimes even see the guides and locals happily swimming in these waters.

Your friends back home don’t need to know you had your hands and legs firmly inside the canoe. On the way back to your lodge, keep your eyes out for friendly pink and grey river dolphins that will happily swim alongside your canoe.

Jump back in the boat after dinner for a little game of “Find the Caiman/Alligator” during a twilight river excursion. Look out for owls, capybaras, and of course the glistening eyes of caimans and alligators. The professional guide will pick up some of the smaller ones to give you a closer look before letting it go about its nightly business.

Feeling brave after fishing for piranha? If you’re feeling up for it and depending on the size of the alligator or caiman, your guide may give you the chance to hold it as well!

As we mentioned before, it doesn’t get much more exciting than Amazon tours in Brazil.

Included: Activities at the lodge, Accommodation in the Amazon (Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Meeting the Locals

On day four of your Brazil Amazon tour, you’ll get to know the locals a little better. Here’s what you should expect.

Slept well after last night’s twilight river excursion? Then this morning, set out for a local village to meet with some families. Now is an excellent time to get your questions answered about how they live their lives and have adapted to this environment as well as the challenges they face living in the Amazon. You’ll also see how a lot of the foods and goods, such as cassava, rubber, Brazil nuts, and herbs, are produced.

Cassava is one of the main staples in the Northern Brazilian diet and is usually eaten with rice and beans or fish. Your expert guide will be on hand to translate and explain a little more about the different uses of some of the plants native to the Amazon. Including those used for medicinal, culinary, and hunting purposes.

Then it’s time to return to the adventure lodge for lunch before taking the afternoon to relax. Gently swinging in a hammock, listening to the sounds of the jungle and perhaps even spotting some wildlife at the lodge.

Travel to Magical Rio

At the designated time, you’ll head back to Manaus airport for your flight to Rio. If you have the morning free, feel free to relax, or create your own adventure. Our guides are always ready to point out some fun activities in each area.

Landing in Rio de Janeiro, our local representative will be waiting for you at the airport to greet and take you to your hotel. Once you’ve settled into your accommodation in Rio, the rest of the day is free to explore some of our favorite local spots.

Stroll along the long boulevards next to the beaches of Ipanema, Leblon, and of course Copacabana while humming the song, Girl from Ipanema’. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of huts selling delicious freshly squeezed juices and coconuts. These will refresh you as you soak up the breathtaking cityscape of Rio de Janeiro and realize why the city is known as The Marvelous City’!

Relax and watch the sunset at the beach before going out for dinner at one of the restaurants along the promenade. We recommend trying one of Brazil’s most famous and traditional dishes, feijoada carioca (a stew of beans with beef and pork served with white rice and farofa). Washed down with a refreshing caipirinha cocktail or a local beer Brahma and Skol are our favorites! Following dinner, you can go back to your hotel to relax or go to one of the local samba bars to dance the night away!

Included: Transfer to the airport, Private transfer from Rio Airport to Hotel with English speaking driver; Accommodation in Rio. (Meals – Breakfast).

Rio like a local

A trip to Rio isn’t complete without some of the fantastic activities in store for you on day six of your Amazon Brazil tour.

The tour starts at 9 am at the meeting point: in front of the famous “Copacabana Palace Hotel”, an icon of the ’30s / 40’s golden Copacabana years. After learning a bit about this place, you will walk a few blocks to get to the Subway Metro Station, main´s Carioca´s transport around the city every day. You will then reach the Municipal Theatre built on an eclectic style, located in the center of the city.

A few blocks away, you will find and jump in the Bondinho Santa Teresa, a cable car built in 1872 that runs on the top of an old aqueduct called Arcos da Lapa. After a few stations, we reach the bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa, passing by many old antique mansions. You will find the Parque das Ruinas (closed on Mondays) here. This old Palace ruins was rebuilt and became the center of many arts and cultural activities of the city with panoramic views in all its splendor.

If clouds allow, you will see from here the City Center, Sugarloaf, Guanabara Bay, and many others. A few Kodak moments later, you will get to the Celeron Colorful Stairs, a cultural main spot in the Lapa neighborhood, the core of the Carioca´s nights. Finally, you will enjoy the Confiteria Colombo, an old Art Nouveau coffee store from the latest 1800, chosen as one of the ten most beautiful coffee stores in the world (closed on Sundays).

When this visit is over, you will either be dropped at the Sugarloaf to get into the cable car or take the metro back to the Copacabana Palace where the tour ends. Our guide will give you directions on how to get to Christ the Redeemer by yourself in the afternoon. Or we can pre-buy your Christ the Redeemer entrance fee as availability can be scarce during some periods.

Following the tour and returning to your hotel or heading straight for the beach, the rest of the day is free to spend at leisure. Tonight, keep to the beachside restaurants and feast on a long list of salgadinhos (finger food) such as fried cod cakes. All washed down with a nice cold caipirinha. Be careful though, their sweet and smooth taste packs quite a punch, so drink them with caution!

Included: Private excursion with Guide and Public Transportation; Accommodation in Rio. (Meals – Breakfast).

Day at Leisure

Every good Rio de Janeiro adventure has some downtime to relax and take in all the beautiful sights and smells this wonderful city has to offer. However, if you’d like to explore even more, we have an optional day tour available to you.

This is a day at leisure or you can take our optional tour – Backgrounds of Carnival. Rio is internationally recognized for its grandiose Carnival Parade and Samba. But only a few people really know how the parades are made. With this tour, you will get to know the origins of this world-known festivity. Visit the Sambadrome (Carnaval stadium) and its cultural center; the revitalized port area where the samba has its roots, including a visit to the charming port area neighborhood of Morro da Conceicao.

Take a stroll through an old hidden historical area – nowadays full of artists and ateliers. See the historical site Pedra do Sal, where the samba started. And familiarize yourself with the African-Brazilian culture, the period of slavery, and all the pillars that have supported the modern-day Carnival.

Undoubtedly the highlight of the tour is the visit to a samba school atelier. Here you can experience how the carnival in Rio is being done behind the scenes. Including the impressive and gigantic work of designing and building all the magnificent floats that will be used in the famous parade at the Sambadrome during carnival.

Included: Accommodation in Rio. (Meals – Breakfast).

Flight to the Falls

Iguazu Falls Brazil is your destination for the eighth day of your adventure tour. Your private transfer will take you to Rio airport for your trip to the falls. Upon arrival at Foz do Iguacu’s Airport, you’ll dive straight into the action and waste no time as your transfer and guide picks you up to begin your tour of the Brazilian side of the Falls.

To make the most of your time at the Natural World Wonder of Iguaçu Falls and to explore the Brazilian side of the Falls you’ll first have a private guided tour of the Brazilian side. Then you’ll be taken to your hotel in the town of Foz do Iguacu on the Brazilian side of the Falls.

The Iguazu Falls border Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay and today you’ll have a private guided tour of the Brazilian side. Amidst a vibrant jungle of exotic trees and colorful butterflies, the Brazilian side offers a more panoramic view of the falls. As well as an up-close and direct view of Iguaçu’s largest waterfall that stands at over 262 ft.

Ominously known as the Garganta del Diablo (or Devil’s Throat), this is the waterfall that made Eleanor Roosevelt say, “Poor Niagara…” If you want to experience the falls from above you can organize an Iguazu Helicopter Ride; just make sure to mention it at the start of the day so that your private guide can make time for it.

Note: In case you have an evening flight into Foz do Iguacu, we will schedule the Brazil excursion on Day 3 before your flight out of Foz do Iguacu.

Included: Private transfer from your hotel to Rio Airport, Private excursion with Transport, Guide and Entrance fee from the airport; Accommodation in Iguazu. (Meals – Breakfast).

Argentinean side of Iguazu

Today is the day you’ve been waiting for as you travel just 18.6 miles (30km) from the town of Foz do Iguaçu to the Tancredo Neves Bridge. Where you’ll cross over the Iguaçu River and arrive at Argentina’s National Park of Iguazu. Climbing aboard a small train your first stop will be the ominously named Devil’s Throat (Garganta del Diablo. Which, standing at over 262ft., is the biggest waterfall in Iguazu. Having soaked up the enormity of the Devil’s Throat, your guide will take you along the wooden walkways and trails of both the upper and lower circuit.

With over 270 separate waterfalls and surrounded by the verdant jungle of Iguazu, exploring the Natural World Wonder of Iguazu is one of the most unforgettable moments. You’ll notice that the various trails that take you through the jungle, above and around waterfalls are built a few feet above the jungle floor and waterways. These raised platforms not only protect the natural habitat of the jungle wildlife but they will also take you to secluded viewpoints offering unimaginable views across the whole National Park.

After a full day exploring Argentina’s side of Iguazu Falls, it’s time to cross back over the border. As your transfer takes you back to your accommodation in Foz do Iguaçu, the rest of your evening is free to spend at your leisure.

Included: Private excursion with Transport, Guide and Entrance fees; Accommodation in Iguazu. (Meals – Breakfast).

Departure from Iguazu

It’s time to hit the road again as you make your way to your next destination where if you are planning to, you can enjoy exploring the beauty and vibrant, Carnival atmosphere of Brazil further. Your private transfer will take you to the airport for your onward journey.

Included: Private transfer from your hotel to the airport with assistance. (Meals – Breakfast).

Macron to Visit Amazon Rainforest With Lula on 3-Day Brazil Tour

By Lisandra Paraguassu and Elizabeth Pineau

BRASILIA/PARIS (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron, who criticized Brazil's previous government for failing to protect the rainforest, will arrive on Tuesday in the Amazon at the start of a three-day visit to the South American country.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will meet Macron in Belem, near the mouth of the Amazon River, where the two will visit conservation parks with sustainable development projects and meet with Indigenous leaders.

"Lula wants to show Macron the complexity of the Amazon, which is not just a vast rainforest but also a place where 25 million people live," Brazil's top diplomat for Europe and North America, Maria Luisa Escorel, told reporters on Friday.

She said the French government intends to fund sustainable development and programs to stop deforestation in the Amazon.

Lula and Macron will discuss a common course to fight both climate change and poverty as Brazil prepares to host the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro in November and United Nations climate talks in Belem next year, both of which the French president will attend, the Elysée said in a briefing.

A stalled trade agreement between the European Union and the South American common market Mercosur will not be on their agenda because it is not a bilateral matter, Brazilian and French officials said.

Macron, who faces pressure from French farmers to kill the deal, has said he opposes the agreement that has been under negotiation for two decades.

Brazil, in turn, is unhappy with EU legislation passed last year barring imports of coffee, beef, soy and other commodities if they are linked to recent deforestation, which Brazilian farmers consider a protectionist offensive.

Despite those issues, relations between France and Brazil have recovered from a low point in 2019 when Macron led a wave of international pressure on then-President Jair Bolsonaro over fires raging in the Amazon. Bolsonaro accused Macron and other G7 countries of treating Brazil like "a colony".

"After a four-year eclipse and a virtual freeze in political relations between our two countries during Bolsonaro's presidency, we are in the process of relaunching the bilateral relationship and the strategic partnership with Brazil," a French presidential adviser said.

On Wednesday, at the Itaguai shipyard outside Rio, Macron and Lula will launch the third Scorpene-class diesel-powered submarine built in Brazil with French technology, part of a $10 billion program that will build Brazil's first nuclear-powered submarine at the end of the decade.

The program is a partnership with France's state-run Naval Group in which the Thales defense group has a 35% stake.

Macron will meet business executives in Sao Paulo on Wednesday afternoon and make a state visit to Brasilia on Thursday, meeting again with Lula and the head of the Senate.

Giant green anaconda found dead in the Brazilian Amazon, possibly killed by gunshot

amazonas tour brazil

A giant anaconda has been found dead in the Brazilian Amazon, possibly killed by a gunshot wound, according to a Dutch researcher who studies snakes and recently helped discover a giant anaconda that was a contender for the largest snake in the world.

The snake found dead is not the same as the largest anaconda discovered in the Ecuadorian Amazon, despite a flurry of media reports saying that it is, according to professor Bryan Fry , who led a team of scientists with help from the Indigenous  Huaorani people  that discovered a new species of the green anaconda while filming  " Pole to Pole with Will Smith ," a  National Geographic  series that will stream on Disney+.

"This particular specimen wasn’t one of the new species but was a southern green anaconda (Eunectes murinus)," Fry told USA TODAY Wednesday.

Meet the northern green anaconda: New snake species said to be largest ever found

'Magnificent creatures': New photos show largest anaconda ever recorded

What we know about the green anaconda found dead

Professor Freek Vonk, who was on the team that first found the southern green anaconda that has since been killed, shared the news in an Instagram post saying: "With enormous pain in my heart I want to let you know that the mighty big green anaconda I swam with was found dead in the river this weekend."

The snake, named Ana Julia, w as discovered in the Formoso River in the rural area of Bonito in southern Brazil, according to The Independent . It measures 26 feet across and weighed in at around 440 pounds.

"I've heard from several sides that she was shot to death, though there's no official confirmation on the cause of death yet. I’m so sad and angry at the same time!" he wrote.

An update that came in late Tuesday states that "authorities have not yet found any evidence that this beautiful green anaconda was shot dead," Vonk shared on his Instagram.

Snake's death is a 'senseless tragedy'

Even if the snake killed is not record-setting new species, Fry told USA TODAY that its death "is a senseless tragedy on the level of someone shooting a panda."

"So incredibly maddening," he said.

Fry team's work in the Amazon is far from done. Pollutants such as cadmium and lead have woven their way into "the delicate fabric of this ecosystem as consequences of the frequent oil spills plaguing the Yasuni Amazon," he shared with USA TODAY last month.

Scientists hope to keep an eye on the reproduction of green anaconda species to gain greater insight into the health of the ecosystem at large.

"It's these kinds of extremely large and old specimens that are extra vulnerable. If there is more news, I will of course share immediately," Vonk said. "The fact that I got to spend over an hour with her at the bottom of the river remains one of my most breathtaking experiences in nature - and one I will never forget! I love you so much. I love you."

‘a franco-brazilian moment’.

It was the head-of-state photo session seen round the internet. On Tuesday, the official social media accounts for Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and French President Emmanuel Macron shared images of the two leaders together on a trip through the Amazon. In one photo, Lula and Macron grasped hands , smiling and peering out over the bow of a ship; in another, they bounded through the sun-dappled rainforest.

The subtext was clear: The trade agreement between South American customs union Mercosur and the European Union may be on life support, but Brazil and France are still doing big things together. That day, the two leaders announced a bilateral plan to invest $1.1 billion over four years in conservation and sustainable agriculture in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil and French Guiana, the latter a French overseas territory.

Macron’s visit to Brazil lasted until Thursday, when the French leader and Lula held an official meeting at Brazil’s presidential palace and signed a  series  of cooperation agreements.

“We are living in a Franco-Brazilian moment,” Macron’s office said . His delegation included officials from some of France’s biggest companies, including Carrefour and Airbus. Their meetings in Brazil intended to back up Macron’s assertion that the two countries can still grow their bilateral business in the absence of a new trade deal.

Whether they will be successful remains to be seen. Regardless, business is not the only reason Macron and Lula have sought closer ties. “Today, France is one of the developed countries that is most open and sensitive to certain demands of the global south,” said Maiara Folly, the executive director of Plataforma CIPÓ, a Brazilian think tank .

France has supported proposals from countries such as Barbados to reform the international climate finance system, as well as suggestions from countries such as Brazil to seek a global minimum tax on billionaires. These topics are among Brazil’s priorities for its G-20 presidency this year.

It was noteworthy that the $1.1 billion announced for the Amazon is due to be financed partially by the French and Brazilian governments, Folly told Foreign Policy . Wealthy countries often favor climate finance schemes that assume significant contributions from the private sector, but “developing countries generally worry that this emphasis on the private sector is a way to downplay the rich countries’ responsibility,” she said.

The France-Brazil Amazon investment initiative appeared to respond to those concerns. The plan includes a pledge to carry out technology transfers. On Wednesday, Lula and Macron unveiled a submarine that was built by an existing bilateral technology transfer program. France is renowned for its submarine production capabilities, which were the basis for a joint initiative with Australia that was canceled in 2021.

The possibility of a second Trump presidency in the United States looms large in Europe, and the continent is on the hunt for other dependable allies. Macron has tried to assert himself as a global leader in this unstable environment. The French president acknowledged that he and Lula had discussed Russia’s war in Ukraine and Venezuela’s political crisis.

In Brazil, Macron gains a key interlocutor in the global south. A friendly Brazil could help bring other developing countries into France’s fold. “Among traditional powers, none is closer to Brazil than France,” Lula said at his press conference with Macron on Thursday.

What We’re Following

Arévalo in Washington. The White House reinforced its support for Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo’s anti-corruption efforts on Monday during Arévalo’s visit to Washington, where he met separately with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The United States also announced $170 million in new economic assistance to Guatemala and said it would continue to speak up for Arévalo’s good governance agenda.

At the Washington headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS), Arévalo then made an unusual request : He asked that the OAS observe the selection of new judges at Guatemala’s Supreme Court and appellate courts due to occur later this year. Usually, monitors only track presidential elections, but some actors in Guatemala’s judiciary are notoriously friendly with the country’s old political elite and have stood in the way of past anti-corruption efforts.

Arévalo, who took office in January, rose to the presidency thanks to a combination of local grassroots and international support. It appears he is seeking to maintain both in the early months of his tenure.

Embassy drama. The Hungarian Embassy in Brasília hosted former President Jair Bolsonaro for two nights last month after Brazilian authorities announced Bolsonaro was under investigation for allegedly plotting a coup, the New York Times reported this week. Bolsonaro’s stay shielded him from arrest and underscored his membership in a global right-wing network that includes Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Brazilian police have now opened a probe into Bolsonaro’s time at the embassy.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Argentine President Javier Milei accused Venezuela of shutting off the electricity at the Argentine Embassy in Caracas, where Milei said his government was sheltering members of the Venezuelan opposition.

By Wednesday, it was the Argentine Embassy in Bogotá that had landed in the headlines. Colombian President Gustavo Petro ordered the expulsion of Argentina’s diplomatic corps in the country after Milei called Petro a “terrorist” and “murderer” in an interview, referring to Petro’s membership in a guerrilla group in the 1980s.

Shakira speaks at the “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” album release party in Hollywood, Florida, on March 21. Mireya Acierto/Getty Images

Back in business. Last Friday, Shakira released her first full-length album in seven years, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran . The album’s rhythms include regional Mexican music and the bachata heard most famously in the Dominican Republic. Many of the songs on the album process her breakup with her former partner, Spanish soccer star Gerard Piqué, including one with the titular line , “Women don’t cry anymore, they cash in.”

Over her three-decade career, Shakira’s songs have become cultural touchpoints in Colombia and beyond. The “cash in” lyric went viral across Latin America when the song was released as a single last year. Even Petro posted about another of Shakira’s recent singles, which tells the story of a low-paying boss. The Colombian president wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “This is why labor reform is needed.” (Shakira’s team later said they did not authorize the song’s use for partisan politics.)

Shakira has always sought to be “someone with a radar attuned to capture in real time what’s happening in music,” El País ’s Carlos Marcos wrote . Over the years, that has included a range of Latin styles, Afrobeat, and music inspired by her Arab heritage. While some critics were underwhelmed by the new album, its range and Shakira’s draw as a performer show why she continues to be a global queen of pop.

Question of the Week

Shakira’s ancestors came to Colombia from what country?

Shakira has Lebanese ancestry on her father’s side.

In Focus: Venezuela’s Opposition Shuffle

Manuel Rosales of Venezuela’s Un Nuevo Tiempo party speaks after registering his presidential candidacy in Caracas on March 26. Gaby Oraa/Getty Images

Venezuela’s opposition was forced to shuffle its official leadership this week to clear new obstacles to its participation in the July 28 presidential election.

The deadline for presidential candidates to register was midnight on Monday. Because the winner of Venezuela’s opposition primary, María Corina Machado, remained banned from running, her coalition chose a replacement candidate, Corina Yoris. But Yoris was unable to sign up due to problems with the registration website as the deadline approached.

The ominous technical glitch prompted an outpouring of denunciations, including from Colombia and Brazil, which until now had preferred to keep their criticism of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s government private.

Brazil said the situation appeared to break a commitment by Maduro to preserve certain electoral conditions and noted that Yoris had no official ban on her candidacy. Colombia voiced concern and said the events could hurt international evaluations of electoral transparency. Venezuela criticized both statements, alleging undue interference in domestic matters.

Machado’s opposition coalition was able to register a placeholder candidate at the last minute: former diplomat Edmundo González. During the period when it was unclear if González’s registration would be successful, one of the parties in the opposition coalition separately registered its own candidate, Zulia state Gov. Manuel Rosales.

“Find a candidate who can get past the government’s obstacles, and I will turn my candidacy spot over to them,” Rosales said Wednesday.

Venezuela’s opposition coalition seems to have made it past this week’s hurdle, however reconfigured its ranks may be. It remains unclear how long González’s and Rosales’s candidacies will be allowed to survive.

World’s largest snake Ana Julia found dead in Amazon rainforest just weeks after it was discovered

The world’s largest snake has been found dead in the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest just weeks after it was discovered.

A team of scientists discovered the previously undocumented  species  of  giant anaconda  in the  Amazon , during filming for National Geographic’s Disney+ series  Pole to Pole with Will Smith.

The huge reptile, named Ana Julia, was found in the Formoso River in the rural area of Bonito in southern Brazil’s Mato Grosso do Sul State five weeks ago.

The 26-foot northern green anaconda weighed around 440lbs - or 31 stone - and had a head the same size as a human’s.

There have been reports claiming the snake may have been shot but a Dutch researcher who helped discover the Ana Julia stressed the cause of death was still being investigated.

Professor Freek Vonk shared the news on Instagram, saying: “With enormous pain in my heart I want to let you know that the mighty big green anaconda I swam with was found dead in the river this weekend.”

“An iron-strong animal, a survivor, one that’s been swimming around Bonito for decades,” the professor added.

“As far as we know, she was super healthy and still in the prime of her life, and in the coming years she could have taken care of many descendants. Since there are not so many of this species of colossal giant snakes swimming around, the blow to biodiversity (and this particular species in particular) is also huge,” he added.

Professor Vonk previously said he heard reports the snake was shot dead, but has since clarified that authorities have not yet found any evidence pointing towards this.

“The cause of death is currently still being investigated, considering all possible options. So it’s also possible that she died a natural death,” he said.

At the time of discovery, Professor Bryan Fry from The University of Queensland said: “The size of these magnificent creatures was incredible – one female anaconda we encountered measured an astounding 6.3 metres long

“There are anecdotal reports from the Waorani people of other anacondas in the area measuring more than 7.5 metres long and weighing around 500 kilograms.”

The new species, described in the journal Diversity, diverged from the previously known southern green anaconda about 10 million years ago, differing genetically from it by 5.5 per cent.

SAO PAULO (AP) — The Brazilian and the French presidents on Tuesday announced a plan to invest 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) in the Amazon, including parts of the rainforest in neighboring French Guiana.

The two countries’ governments said in a joint statement the money will be spread over the next four years to protect the rainforest. It will be a collaboration of state-run Brazilian banks and France’s investment agency. Private resources will also be welcomed, Brazil and France said.

French President Emmanuel Macron and his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva are meeting this week to revive the relationship between the countries after years of frictions with former President Jair Bolsonaro, deepen cooperation to protect the rainforest and boost trade.

Macron started his three-day visit to Brazil in the Amazon city of Belem, where he met his long-time ally Lula. The French president then took a boat to the Combu island to meet with Indigenous leaders.

In this aerial image released by the Maryland National Guard, the cargo ship Dali is stuck under part of the structure of the Francis Scott Key Bridge after the ship hit the bridge, Tuesday, March 26, 2024, in Baltimore. (Maryland National Guard via AP)

Both Macron and Lula saw a protest by Greenpeace Brazil with banners that read “No oil in the Amazon.” Brazil’s government has contemplated allowing the tapping of oil in a region close to the Para state, where Belem lies.

Lula said during a speech that Macron’s visit is part of a global effort to beef up rainforest protections.

“We want to convince those who have already deforested that they need to contribute in an important way to countries that still have their forests to keep them standing,” Lula said in a speech next to the French president.

Macron’s office prior said to the trip that a potential European trade deal with the South American bloc Mercosur won’t be on the agenda. The French president is an opponent of such an agreement as long as South American producers don’t respect the same environment and health standards as Europeans, after farmers raised concerns during protests across France and Europe.

The French president decorated Indigenous leader Raoni Metuktire with the prestigious Legion of Honor medal for efforts at conserving the rainforest.

“You were in Europe and I promised to come here to your forest and be with your people in this forest that is coveted,” Macron told the Indigenous leader, according to French radio RFI. “President Lula and I have a common cause for one of our friends in this land that belongs to you.”

Lula and Macron will seek to “set a common course” to fight both climate change and poverty, Macron’s office said, as Brazil is to host the summit of the Group of 20 leading economies in Rio de Janeiro in November and UN climate talks in Belem next year.

On Wednesday, Macron and Lula will launch a diesel-powered submarine built in Brazil with French technology at the Itaguai shipyard outside Rio de Janeiro. The French president will then head to metropolis Sao Paulo to meet with Brazilian investors. On Thursday, the French president will head to Brasilia to again meet with Lula.
