The 21 Best Movies on Apple TV+ Right Now

A group of girls smiling as they pose for a selfie

When it comes to originals,  Netflix and  Amazon have the deepest libraries of prestige movies. But ever since  CODA   won the Best Picture Oscar , it’s become clear that some of the best movies are on Apple TV+.

As with any streaming service, not every film on the roster is a winner, but from  Billie Eilish documentaries to Sundance darlings, Apple’s streaming service is building up a strong catalog to run alongside its growing slate of  beloved TV shows .

Below are WIRED’s picks for flicks you should prioritize in your queue. Once you’re done, hop over to our list of the  best movies on Netflix and the  best movies on Disney+ . If you’re feeling a little more episodic, our guide for the  best shows on Amazon might be just the ticket.

Girls State

Do you remember the 2020 documentary Boys State , about a group of young men in Texas who attend a summer program where the are challenged to form their own government? Girls State is similar—it even comes from the same filmmaking team of Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine—but it follows a group of people who have never seen someone of their gender hold the office of US president. It's also set in Missouri, not Texas. Expect all the same wild ambition and hearbreak—and more than a few life lessons learned.

Mad Max: Fury Road

When Mad Max: Fury Road came out in 2015, it was three decades late and right on time. Released 30 years after mastermind George Miller released the last Mad Max movie— Beyond Thunderdome —it was a jolt to moviegoers who were otherwise being treated to rehashes like Fantastic Four and Terminator Genisys . Easily one of the best postapocalyptic films ever, it’s all style but not devoid of substance. It also introduced Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, a crusader for the women being subjected to the tyranny of Immortan Joe. Fury Road will be on Apple TV+ until the end of April—just enough time for you to watch it again before its follow-up, Furiosa , hits theaters in May.

OK, so Napoleon didn’t exactly get critics’ pens flying , but sometimes you’re just in the mood for a big, prestige-y Ridley Scott historical drama, you know? This one stars Joaquin Phoenix as the title character, following his quest to conquer, well, as much as he possibly can. Rather than being a sprint to the Battle of Waterloo, however, this pic gives attention to the French emperor’s emotionally rocky relationship with his wife Joséphine de Beauharnais (Vanessa Kirby). What happens when a man can conquer most of Europe but not his own feelings? Watch and find out.

Killers of the Flower Moon

Martin Scorsese’s epic film is based on David Grann’s 2017 book about a member of the Osage Nation, Mollie Burkhart, who sought to get to the bottom of the deaths in her family. Set in 1920s Oklahoma, a time when many Osage were being killed for the money made from oil on their land, Scorsese’s film follows the relationship between Mollie (played by Lily Gladstone, who won a Golden Globe for her performance) and Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and what happens when the FBI comes to investigate the Osage deaths. When WIRED named it one of 2023’s best movies , we called it “a feel-bad masterpiece,” and we stand by that.

Fingernails

Can technology determine whether you've found The One? Probably not, but in the latest from writer-director Christos Nikou, an institute run by Duncan (Luke Wilson) claims that it has found the formula for true love anyway—and Anna (Jessie Buckley) wants to figure out if it's real. The institute, you see, has determined that Anna and her boyfriend Ryan (Jeremy Allen White) are a match, but has doubts. While working at the institute, though, she meets Amir (Riz Ahmed) and finds someone who actually might be her match.

Flora and Son

Remember Sing Street , that charming indie about a kid in Dublin who starts a band as an escape from his complicated home life? What about Once , that charming indie about a pair that spends a week in Dublin writing songs about their love? If you enjoyed either of those—or if they just sound like something you might enjoy—let us suggest Flora and Son , a charming indie about a mother in Dublin trying to connect with her son through song. Like Sing Street and Once , Flora and Son comes from director John Carney and has all of his signature moves, plus something else: Eve Hewson, who plays the movie's titular mom. She's a force, and she hits all of her musician notes perfectly. Makes sense; she's Bono's daughter.

The Beanie Bubble

Here it is, the question everyone will ask when you’re writing about Apple TV+’s new original movie: Do you remember Beanie Babies? If you were born after 2000, the answer is likely no , unless you have a retro toy collector friend or a goofy aunt who has a few of them lying around. The good news is that The Beanie Bubble is for those fans and everyone else too. It’s about a toy salesman named Ty Warner (Zach Galifianakis) who stumbles into the biggest success of his life after he teams up with three women to develop the kind of plushies people just can’t get enough of. Reviews have been mixed, but thanks to performances from the likes of Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks, and Sarah Snook (proving there’s life after Succession ), it’s the kind of sweet dramedy that’s perfect for a night in.

Stephen Curry: Underrated

Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry might be one of the most beloved players in American basketball—and he is definitely one of the best players, if not the best player, in the league. He has been named the NBA's Most Valuable Player twice and has won four championship rings. He also has more career three-pointers than anyone in the league. But in the late aughts, he was a kid at a small school, Davidson College, just trying to live up to the potential his coaches saw in him. Underrated , directed by Peter Nicks ( Homeroom ), chronicles that journey, showing how Curry bested the predictions of his own NBA draft (many said he didn't have the size necessary for the league) to become one of the greatest to ever play the game. For basketball fans, it's a must-watch.

Beastie Boys Story

One of the pioneering groups in hip hop, the Beastie Boys have a story like no other. For this “live documentary,” filmmaker Spike Jonze filmed Mike Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) as they told a crowd at Brooklyn’s Kings Theater about their rise to stardom. Complete with old footage, photos, and stories from the group’s decades-long career, the doc captures just how influential the Beasties have been since they started playing music together as kids in New York City in the late ’70s and early ’80s. It also features some wonderful memories of their third member, Adam “MCA” Yauch, who died in 2012 following a battle with cancer.

This is the one that put Apple TV+ on the map. The movie’s title is an acronym for “child of deaf adults.” It’s the story of Ruby, the only hearing person in a family that includes two deaf parents and one deaf sibling. When Ruby discovers a love of music, she's forced to reconcile her own aspirations with those of her family, who run a small fishing business and often need her to help communicate. Warm and gripping,  CODA  is the kind of movie that will have you cheering and crying at the same time.

Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie

In 1985, Michael J. Fox was one of Hollywood’s biggest names as the star of a hit TV show ( Family Ties ) and the year’s highest-grossing movie ( Back to the Future ). Just a few years later, at the age of 29, Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In  Still , Oscar-winning documentarian Davis Guggenheim offers a poignant portrait of Fox’s personal and professional life and his journey from teen idol to advocate for a cure.

Mahershala Ali stars alongside, well, Mahershala Ali in this romantic-sci-fi-drama. Yes, it’s all of those things. Cameron (Ali) is a loving husband (to Naomie Harris) and father who, after learning he has a terminal illness, must decide just how far he’ll go to protect his family from having to know the truth, or deal with the devastating aftermath.

Sharper is one of those movies where the less you know about it going in, the better. Just know that no one is what they seem or who they say they are in this neo-noir starring Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, Justice Smith, and John Lithgow. This twisty little thriller flew largely under the radar when it was released in theaters for a half-second in early 2023.

If you’ve read the  reviews , you know this movie isn’t exactly  good , per se, but if you want to see Captain America (Chris Evans) and a future John Wick–franchise badass (Ana de Armas) fall in love as part of the goofiest premise possible—He’s a farmer! She’s a secret agent!—this is for you. Give this movie a go(sted).

The World’s a Little Blurry

By now, thousands of pop music fans know the Billie Eilish monomyth: Young, slightly punk, slightly goth teenager starts making songs in her brother’s bedroom, puts them online, and becomes one of the biggest pop stars in the world. It’s a great story, but that’s only about a quarter of the tale of Eilish’s ascent to superstar status.  The World’s a Little Blurry  fills in (some of) the blanks. Director R. J. Cutler got amazing access for this film, which chronicles everything from Eilish’s songwriting process with her brother Finneas to her frank talk about her Tourette’s. It’s the kind of music documentary that redefines the music documentary.

Cha Cha Real Smooth

“Sundance hit starring Dakota Johnson”s are almost a dime a dozen, but this one, about a young bar/bat mitzvah party-starter is the, ahem, real deal. It also proves that Cooper Raiff—who writes, directs, and stars in the movie—is one to keep your eye on.

The Tragedy of Macbeth

Yes, most people already know the story of Macbeth—Scottish lord with an eye toward ruling his country—but not everyone has seen it through the eyes of director Joel Coen. Shot entirely in black and white and starring Denzel Washington as Macbeth and Frances McDormand as his powerful wife, the film was nominated for three Oscars and brought a very new twist onto a classic Shakespearean tale.

Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues

Above all else, Louis Armstrong is known as one of the most famous jazz musicians of all time. But he was also a figure in the struggle for equality in America—albeit a complicated one. As director Sacha Jenkins illustrates in this documentary, while Armstrong broke racial barriers in entertainment he also faced accusations that he didn’t stand up as much for civil rights as other performers of his era. Jenkins got access to scores of photographs, clippings, and even recordings Armstrong made of his own conversations for this documentary, and that access provides a much fuller picture of the legendary musician than the world has ever had.

One of the most popular video games of all time,  Tetris  was a phenomenon for Nintendo Game Boy owners in the 1980s. But  Tetris (the movie) is the story of the people who made the game and brought it from the then-Soviet Union to the rest of the world. Part historical dramedy, part espionage flick, the movie doesn’t always hit its marks, but if you’ve never heard the story of how  Tetris  got out from behind the Iron Curtain, it’s worth a watch.

Causeway  kind of came and went when it was released in 2022, but that’s also the sort of movie it is. Focused on a soldier (Jennifer Lawrence) who returns home after suffering a brain injury in Afghanistan, the film from director Lila Neugebauer is about trauma and how people lean on each other to get through it. A worthy watch for the times when you have your own stuff to work through.

Sidney Poitier died in 2022, the same year Apple TV+ released this documentary looking at the actor’s long-running career— In the Heat of the Night ,  Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner —and impact on American culture and politics. With interviews ranging from Spike Lee and Morgan Freeman to Harry Belafonte, the film goes beyond his time in Hollywood, starting with his upbringing in the Bahamas and ending with his massive impact on the civil rights movement and elsewhere.

How to surf the web on Apple TV

Karen Haslam

For reasons best known to Apple, there is no web browser available on the Apple TV. Despite the fact that the Apple TV runs a version of iOS there is not a version of Safari designed for Apple TV and there is no substitute web browser available in the TV App Store.

But before you drown in disappointment, there are a few ways in which you can surf the web on your Apple TV. Read on to find out how.

We’ll look at three ways in which you can access your favourite websites on your TV screen, including popular TV Catchup channels, FaceBook, Google’s search engine and more. Read about how to watch OnDemand TV channels on Apple TV here .

Method 1: Surf the web on your Apple TV using AirPlay

This is the easiest way to surf the web on the Apple TV. It’s ideal if you want to share the surfing experience with friends and family who are in the room with you, or if what you are looking at on the web would benefit from a bigger screen.

Using Apple’s AirPlay you can stream the screen of your iPhone or your Mac to your TV screen.

Pros: You can see everything that you see on your iPhone or Mac on the TV screen.

Cons: You might as well be looking at your iPhone or Mac screen, and when it comes to scrolling and typing you will be. You won’t be able to use your iPhone for anything else while you are mirroring it’s screen on the TV.

How to view your iPhone screen on your TV

  • Swipe up from the bottom of your iPhone to view Control Centre.
  • Tap on Screen Mirroring
Choose your Apple TV.
  • You may be required to enter an AirPlay code for the Apple TV you are connecting too. This code will appear on the TV Screen attached to the Apple TV.
  • Navigate to Safari on your iPhone and surf the web.
  • If you rotate our iPhone into landscape you should be able to view the web using the full screen of your TV (some apps, like Facebook won’t rotate).

How to view the screen of your Mac on your TV

  • Click on the AirPlay icon from the menu bar at the top of the screen (a triangle pointing into a box)
  • Choose your Apple TV from the options
  • Your Mac display may alter so that it is optimised for the Apple TV (this made everything smaller on our MacBook screen) .
  • There are a few different ways you can set up AirPlay on your Mac and TV screen. You could mirror the Mac screen on the TV, in which case you will see everything on your Mac duplicated over on the TV.
  • However, if you want to surf on your TV screen, while leaving your Mac free to do something else, you can change the arrangement of your screens – this would be ideal if you wanted to stream video to your TV while typing into a Pages document on your Mac at the same time.
  • Open System Preferences > Display and click on Arrangement

apple tv safari movie

  • Now based on how you arrange the screens you can drag your Safari (or other browser) window over to the Apple TV screen. To figure our which display is which in the illustration under the Arrangement tab click on the screen and you will see a red outline on the one that represents the Apple TV. Drag in that direction and the browser will appear on your TV screen.
  • You can now use your mouse, or trackpad to scroll around the browser on your TV screen.
  • We find it preferable to use a separate keyboard and mouse because they feel less connected to your Mac and therefore you feel more like you are surfing the web on the TV. Even better if you have a wireless mouse and keyboard. One reason why this feels more natural is that you don’t need to look at your Mac at all while surfing.
  • Remember that you won’t be able to continue using your Mac while someone else surfs the web on the TV screen (or rather you can, but there will be a battle over the mouse and keyboard). It’s the perfect set up for showing video on the TV screen – perhaps something on All4 or another Catch Up TV channel – while using your Mac for something else.

Read more about using AirPlay to stream from your Mac to TV here .

Method 2 – Surf the web using AirBrowser on your iPhone

One issue with surfing the web on your TV screen via your iPhone and AirPlay is the fact that you have to scroll and swipe around on your iPhone so you might as well be doing your surfing on that device rather than the TV. As we said earlier, it’s ideal if you want other people in the room to see what you are looking at, but otherwise, we’re not sure what you really gain.

Here’s where AirBrowser comes in.

Pros: AirBrowser puts a web browser on your TV screen while reserving the iPhone for controls and a keypad. You get a full desktop view of the web pages.

Cons: Not all elements of web pages worked in AirBrowser. Some forms were difficult to fill in if they used multiple choice. It costs £5.

AirBrowser places controls for browsing the web on your iPhone – so you can swipe around the page, or type using the iPhone keyboard, but the actual web page appears on the TV screen.

  • Download AirBrowser from the App Store on your iPhone (it costs £4.99)
  • Open the AirBrowser app.
  • You will be asked to Connect Second Screen, the animation shows you how, except the animation shows how it worked in iOS 10, rather than iOS 11.
  • Swipe up on Control Panel and choose Screen Mirroring.
  • Choose your Apple TV.
  • Now you should see a browser on the TV screen and a url bar on the iPhone. Tap on the URL bar and enter the name of the site you wish to visit, or a search phrase.
  • On the TV screen you will either see the website you wished to visit or the results of your Google search.
  • To scroll down the page swipe upwards with two fingers.
  • To click on a link use one finger to track to the link and tap.
  • To go back to the previous page tap on the back arrow at the top of the iPhone interface.
  • To view all the tabs you have open tap on the central icon that shows 9 dots.
  • You can view the site as it would appear on desktop or mobile by swiping between the two options at the bottom of the page.

apple tv safari movie

We did encounter a few difficulties using AirBrowser. For example when it came to signing in to use services sometimes we weren’t able to because where a site used a multiple choice selection tool for, say, your date of birth or title, it wasn’t possible to select an option.

At other times we found that we couldn’t play video because it was in Flash. The browser seems to fool the site into thinking it’s a Mac, but of course your TV and your iPhone can’t download Flash so you can’t view the content.

apple tv safari movie

Another issue we had was when viewing iTV player. We were able to get it to play the content but we weren’t able to select full screen view in order for the video player to fill the TV screen. Instead we were able to increase page size by zooming in (pinch to zoom). We had more success with iTV player than any of the other TV services. On my5 we got a video playback errors.

Read more about watching OnDemand TV on your Apple TV here .

Method 3 – Using tvOSBrowser to surf the web on your Apple TV

This one is a little more complicated to set up, but essentially gives you a web browser on your Apple TV. You’ll need an Apple Developer account (which is free), Xcode and a USB-C cable or an adapter. If that doesn’t sound like you it probably won’t be worth you reading any further.

Pros: This is the closest you will get to an web browser app for the Apple TV.

Cons: It’s not easy to install and probably isn’t worth the effort.

Of course if you like tinkering with things like this, then go ahead. This would probably interest you too: How to jailbreak an Apple TV.

  • We’ll assume you have a developer account. If not you need to set one up here developer.apple.com/account.
  • Download Xcode from the Mac App Store.
  • Get a USB-A to USB-C cable.
  • Download the source code to tvOSBrowser using Xcode (you can get it from here https://github.com/steventroughtonsmith/tvOSBrowser)
  • This is where it all gets a little complicated. You have to remove some code in order to get the tvOSBrowser to work. We suggest you read this tutorial here .

How to install and use a web browser on Apple TV 4 and 4K

apple tv safari movie

Apple TV is one of the best media players out there with support for many games. However, Apple stripped off the support for Safari after Apple TV’s 3rd generation. Hence, you can’t install a web browser in the later updates.

While you can surf the web via AirPlay using your other Apple devices, not all websites and streaming apps support it. But there’s a way out! Thanks to ‘ jvanakker ‘ for developing a third-party web browser, you can still install a browser on your Apple TV. Let’s understand how to do it.

Note: Installing the tvOS browser on your Apple TV won’t void its warranty. However, it might require installing it (from scratch) from time to time due to Apple’s third-party developer policies.

Requirements to browse the web on Apple TV

How to install and surf the web on apple tv, how to use tvos web browser, other alternatives for surfing the web on apple tv.

Here are a few things you’ll need.

  • A Mac and a USB-C to USB-C cable.
  • An Apple Developer account. You can sign up for a free Apple Developer account on developer.apple.com/account .
  • Xcode on your Mac.

After you’ve downloaded and installed Xcode on your Mac, you’re ready to install the tvOS browser on your Apple TV.

  • Install Xcode from Mac’s App Store. Note : The setup file is around 5GB.
  • Now, connect your Apple TV to your Mac via the USB-C cable and open Xcode.
  • Visit github.com/jvanakker/tvOSBrowser on your Mac.

Open Xcode to download tvOS browser on Apple TV

  • Unzip the file on your Mac.

Open the Browser.xcodeproj file on Mac

  • A screen similar to this would appear. Now, change the Deployment Target to 14.0 .

Set custom Bundle Identifier name on Mac

  • From the top-down menu, select your Apple TV as the Target Device, and click the ▶ button.

Wait for the process to finish. Now you have for yourself an Apple TV running a custom version of Apple’s Safari web browser.

How to use web browser on Apple TV

The developer hasn’t updated the app for the latest Apple TV 4K with Siri Remote. So, there’s no way to use the ‘swivel’ control on this version of the tvOS browser. We’ll update this article when a new version for the latest Apple TV 4K is released. Though you can still use this version using the click buttons.

There are two modes with which you can control the browser. Double press the center of the touch area (center button in the newer version) to switch between scroll and cursor mode. A single tap on the touch area would reveal the Quick Menu in which you can input URLs, search Google, reload the page, or navigate back .

Double tapping the center area would reveal an advanced section wherein you can see your history, open favorite websites, clear cookies, and more. Remember to clear the tvOS browser’s cache from time to time to prevent it from slowing down.

Other alternatives for surfing the web on Apple TV

If you don’t happen to have a Mac or are just unable to install Safari on your Apple TV, you can use the alternatives mentioned below. Using these will skip the fussy steps required and save you some time.

1. Use AirPlay

More often than not, the streaming website that you’re trying to cast to your Apple TV support Apple’s AirPlay. Check our guide on how to use AirPlay to cast videos to Apple TV from iPhone, iPad, and Mac .

2. Surf web on Apple TV via third-party applications

If you cannot AirPlay the content to your Apple TV, you can stream videos to your Apple TV via third-party apps on your phone. AirBrowser is one such app that allows you to cast websites to Apple TV.

Download the AirBrowser app from iOS App Store (it costs $4.99), click screen mirroring, and choose your Apple TV. You’ll now be able to cast almost any content from any website in the world.

3. Connect your laptop directly via HDMI

Last but not least, you can directly connect your Mac to your TV by using the HDMI cable and then streaming the content as you usually would. If your Mac doesn’t happen to have an HDMI port, check out some of the best USB-C to HDMI adapters for your Mac .

Apple TV+ shows and movies: Everything to watch on Apple TV Plus

Avatar for Benjamin Mayo

Apple TV+ offers exclusive Apple original TV shows and movies in 4K HDR quality. You can watch across all of your screens and pick up where you left off on any device. Apple TV+ costs $9.99 per month. Here’s every Apple original television show and movie available now on Apple TV+, as well as the latest trailers …

Apple TV+ content is available exclusively through the Apple TV app . You can watch on your Apple TV set-top box, iPhone, or iPad as you might expect.

But you don’t need the latest Apple TV 4K to enjoy Apple TV+. The TV app is also available on other platforms like Amazon Fire TV , Roku , Sony PlayStation , Xbox , and even the web at tv.apple.com .

Apple TV+ offers original comedies, dramas, thrillers, documentaries, and kids shows.

For your $9.99/month subscription, you can watch all of Apple’s originals — as listed below. You can download to watch offline too. Apple is adding new content every single month.

How to watch the free Apple TV+ shows

apple tv safari movie

The TV app is the exclusive destination for Apple TV+, but the TV app is a little confusing because it blends together purchasable TV shows and movies from the iTunes Store, which you can buy or rent, content from other apps like Amazon Prime and Disney+, and Apple TV Channels.

The Watch Now screen does not really distinguish between content that you own and can watch, and just Apple’s general recommendations.

The easiest way to get started with Apple TV+ is to open the Apple TV app on your device , and tap on the Originals tab. (On some platforms, this tab is simply labelled using the ‘tv+’ logo.)

This tab takes you to the Apple TV+ channel page. This shows you all of the Apple TV+ shows and movies available to watch, separated into categories like comedy, drama and family fun.

Be aware, the web experience at tv.apple.com is a bit barebonds compared to the native TV app on devices, and it only shows Apple original content. For the best experience, use the TV app on a device like Apple TV 4K .

What to watch on Apple TV+

Apple TV+ (Apple TV Plus, or as some erroneously call it Apple+ TV) is still in its infancy but has already seen breakout hits including comedy Ted Lasso and workplace sci-fi drama Severance .

Apple aims for premium quality across its drama, comedy, and documentary TV shows and movies so everything should reach a reasonable level of quality and hopefully be worth your time. In terms of personal recommendations, I suggest starting with Ted Lasso , For All Mankind , Severance , Trying , and the movie Finch .

  • How to use AirPlay to stream videos to your TV

Stream a video straight from your iPhone to your TV

By Aliya Chaudhry

apple tv safari movie

If you want to cast a video from your iPhone to your TV, or if you want to watch YouTube on a larger screen, AirPlay, Apple’s casting feature, will help you do that . AirPlay allows you to wirelessly cast audio or video from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to an Apple TV or an AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV , as long as your device is connected to the same Wi-Fi as the TV.

You can stream videos from any iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac. You can even stream video from a Windows PC, but only through iTunes. Just make sure your device’s operating system is relatively recent (a list of the various OS requirements can be found here ).

With the latest version , AirPlay 2, you can also stream audio to multiple rooms, decide which room to play it in, and pair speakers. Here’s how to stream audio using AirPlay .

Here’s how to use AirPlay to cast videos from your iPhone, your Mac, and your Windows PC.

Use AirPlay on your iPhone

These instructions are specifically for an iPhone, but the steps are similar for an iPad or an iPod touch. The biggest differences in the procedure depend on what app you’re playing video from. You’ll have to follow one of two sets of steps:

  • If you see an AirPlay button — which looks like a rectangle with an arrow pointing up at the bottom — when you open up the app or a video in the app, tap on that to use AirPlay. For example, in the YouTube app for iPad, there will be an AirPlay button in the bottom right corner of the video.
  • If you don’t see an AirPlay button, then you’ll need to select the app’s option for casting, sharing, or playing content on a different device, and then tap the AirPlay option. For example, in the YouTube app for iPhone, you would tap the cast button at the top of the screen (it looks like a rectangle with a Wi-Fi symbol coming out of the bottom left corner) and then tap “AirPlay & Bluetooth devices.” In Photos, tap the share button (which looks like a square with an arrow coming out of the top). Then, scroll down and tap AirPlay.

YouTube will display a pop-up list of casting options, including AirPlay.

  • For either type of app, tap the device you want to use AirPlay with.

Select which device to use AirPlay with from this screen.

  • Your TV may display a code. Enter that in the box on your phone’s screen and tap OK.
  • Now you’re casting your video to your TV via AirPlay.

You may be prompted to enter the code from your TV into this box.

  • To stop casting, open up the AirPlay window in the same way you accessed it above (again, this will differ depending on the app) and tap “iPhone” on the list of devices. This will return your feed from the TV back to your iPhone. In Photos, you’ll have to tap the AirPlay icon in the top right corner and then “My Device.”

Use Airplay on your Mac

  • Open up the video you’d like to cast to your TV.
  • Click on the AirPlay button. Often (but not always) you’ll find it in the bottom right corner of the video. (We found that it was best to access YouTube through Safari rather than Chrome.)
  • Select the device you’d like to cast your video to from the drop-down options.

In YouTube, the devices you can use AirPlay with will be listed in the bottom right-hand corner, near the AirPlay button.

  • Your Mac may ask you for the code displayed on your TV. Enter it into the pop-up window.
  • When you want to stop casting, click on the same AirPlay button you clicked on earlier to start AirPlay. Then click “Turn off AirPlay” from the drop-down menu.

This is what you’ll see on your Mac screen after sending a video from QuickTime Player to a TV via AirPlay.

Using AirPlay on your PC

You can use AirPlay on your Windows PC, but only for content on iTunes. To do that:

  • Open iTunes and start playing a video.
  • Click on the AirPlay button in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.
  • Select the device from which you want to watch.
  • You may be prompted to enter a code. If so, enter the code on your TV into the pop-up window on your PC.
  • You should now be watching your video on your TV.

In iTunes, the devices you can use AirPlay with will appear in the lower left-hand corner.

  • To stop AirPlay, click on the AirPlay button again and then select “My Computer.”

There is another way to cast video to your TV: by using screen mirroring to cast your entire screen to your TV. We’ll walk through those steps in an upcoming article.

Coda (2021).

Perhaps the most celebrated original movie on Apple TV+, CODA was the first film distributed by a streaming service to win the Oscar for Best Picture . While working on her father's fishing boat and assisting as her brother's and parents’ interpreter, she finds herself torn between exploring her dreams of singing and the obligations she feels to her family. In addition to Best Picture, CODA won Oscars for both Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Killers Of The Flower Moon (2023)

Killers of the flower moon.

Already hailed as a Martin Scorsese masterpiece , Killers of the Flower Moon is based on a true story and the David Grann book of the same name, Killers of the Flower Moon is about the 1920s Oklahoma murders of Osage people after oil was discovered on their land. At the center of it all is Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), a WW1 vet whose rancher uncle, William King Hale (Robert De Niro), convinces him to marry an Osage woman named Mollie (Lily Gladstone), whose family is wealthy from oil money.

Killers of the Flower Moon is a film so harrowing and engrossing that viewers will forget its three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Scorsese doesn't shy away from the injustices and brutalities committed against the Osage by white men like Hale, and members of the Osage were consulted when filming the movie, providing the story with the authenticity it needs. From the heart-wrenching performances by the Killers of the Moon cast (particularly Gladstone) to Robbie Robertson's heart-pulsing score, the movie is a searing critique of an ugly chapter in American history and easily one of the best dramas on Apple TV+.

Napoleon (2023)

*Availability in US

Not available

Ridley Scott's 2023 epic Napoleon is now available to stream on AppleTV+. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular French general and, later, Emperor, Napoleon is a historical biopic that rival's Scott's seminal work, 2000's Gladiator. With solid performances throughout and some truly breathtaking scenes, there are few new movies on AppleTV+ — or any other streaming platforms for that matter — that are quite as grand in scale or scope as Napoleon.

2023 was a solid year for film, and the fact Napoleon didn't win more awards is purely a testament to its competition, which included the likes of Barbie and Oppenheimer. However, as far as movies available to watch on AppleTV+ right now go, Napoleon stands out as one of the absolute best.

Causeway (2022)

Bryan Tyree Henry earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 2023 Oscars for his performance in Causeway , which is a much-deserved recognition of his centrality to the movie's success. Also starring Jennifer Lawrence in a gripping lead performance , the Apple TV+ Original movie follows Lawrence's Lynsay, a soldier who struggles to adjust to life back home after she returns to New Orleans. Causeway deservedly ranks among the best Apple TV+ movies, proving a hit with both casual viewers and professional critics alike.

The 25 Best TV Shows On Apple TV+ Right Now (April 2024)

On the rocks (2020), on the rocks.

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola , On the Rocks is an Apple TV+ Original reminiscent of the director's much-lauded 2003 hit Lost in Translation . The movie stars Bill Murray and Rashida Jones as father-daughter duo Felix and Laura, who team up to spy on her husband Dean (Marlon Wayans).

The light-hearted dramedy has been praised by critics for its nuanced exploration of marriage, Murray’s everlasting charm, and inventively entertaining premise. Boasting an impressive 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, On the Rocks is one of the best movies available on Apple TV+.

Swan Song (2021)

Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali stars alongside Glenn Close, Naomie Harris, and Awkwafina in Swan Song , a romantic sci-fi film that raises existential questions about what it means to be human. The movie tells the story of a terminally ill man given the option to replace himself with a clone and spare his family's grief, leaving him to contemplate whether to discuss the offer with his wife.

Apple TV+'s Swan Song has been praised for its cast, particularly Ali, who was nominated for a BAFTA Film Award and a Golden Globe for his performance, and deservedly ranks as one of the best movies on Apple TV+.

Tetris (2023)

Part biopic, part Cold War thriller, Tetris is more than a video game movie adaptation . The Apple TV+ movie tells the surprisingly dark story of how the titular game became a global phenomenon. In 1988, US-based entrepreneur and video game designer Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton) worked to obtain the rights to Tetris from its programmer Alexey Pajitnov (Nikita Yefremov).

Enamored with what he believes to be the greatest game ever, Rogers risks his life to cross the Iron Curtain and contact the game's creator itself, eventually finding a way into Russia when tensions between the two nations are at their highest. For true gamers, lovers of history, and viewers looking for compelling, real-life political intrigue, Tetris is one of the best Apple TV+ movies in any genre.

The Greatest Beer Run Ever (2022)

The greatest beer run ever.

Starring Zac Efron and Russell Crowe, Peter Farrelly's The Greatest Beer Run Ever is a biographical war dramedy that depicts the extraordinary true story of John “Chickie” Donahue. Efron plays the young war veteran who snuck into the Vietnam War to deliver beer to his on-duty friends. Although The Greatest Beer Run Ever 's true story adaptation received mixed reviews from critics, it was among the top 10 most popular streaming movies after its release — speaking to its charming reinvention of many traditional war movie tropes.

The Greatest Beer Run Ever 's popularity made it one of the platform’s biggest movie premieres and decidedly one of the most enjoyable drama movies on Apple TV+.

Every Apple TV Original Show Ranked Worst To Best

Cherry (2021).

A welcome departure for Spider-Man star Tom Holland , Cherry is a poignant story of trauma, love, and addiction. Holland stars as the titular Cherry, a young man struggling with PTSD and opioid addiction who meets the love of his life but risks losing her due to poor decisions and life changes. While the Apple TV+ movie initially received negative reviews from critics, Cherry is notable for its striking visuals from Anthony and Joe Russo.

Holland's performance in Cherry ’s title role also won popular acclaim among critics, making it a must-watch for fans of the Spider-Man actor who want to see his versatility outside the MCU.

Greyhound (2020)

A fictionalized retelling of the Battle of the Atlantic, Greyhound takes its inspiration from the celebrated novel The Good Shepherd . Tom Hanks stars as Commander Krause, captain of the destroyer class USS Keeling — tasked with escorting a convoy of ships across the ocean. Battling the elements, as well as German U-boats, Krause and his crew find themselves pushed to the limit in some of the most terrifying conditions of the Second World War . At only 90 minutes long, the movie is fast-paced and full of action, which led it to have one of the most-watched streaming debuts on Apple TV+.

Argylle (2024)

Argylle arrived on AppleTV+ in 2024 after having a theatrical debut earlier in the year, and Matthew Vaughn's action spy comedy is already creating conversations thanks both to its intriguing and innovative plot, as well as an all-star cast led by Henry Cavill. The movie focuses on spy novelist Elly Conway, whose books focus on the titular Argylle. An introvert, Elly is thrown wildly out of her comfort zone when she's targeted by a real-life spy organization whose novels apparently predict the future.

Henry Cavill is joined in the Argylle cast by Bryce Dallas Howard as Elly, alongside a cast stacked with A-Listers that includes Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and popstar Dua Lipa. Argylle is a bombastic and energetic ride that never takes itself too seriously, much like Vaughn's beloved Kingsman movies — to which it shares a surprising connection or two.

The Family Plan (2023)

The family plan.

Mark Wahlberg stars in the original Apple TV+ action-comedy The Family Plan, which has all the trappings of a theatrical comedy release and is among the most enjoyable easy watches on the platform. Wahlberg plays a quiet car salesman and family man named Dan Morgan, who is seemingly a pacifist bordering on pushover. However, as the movie progresses, it emerges that Dan was once a highly skilled assassin.

After an attempt is made on his life, Dan must go into hiding with his family while he tracks down his assailant — and, as this is a comedy movie primarily, hilarity ensues as wife Jessica (Michelle Monaghan) and kids Nina (Zoe Colletti) and Kyle (Van Crosby) try to come to terms with learning Dan is actually a trained killer. While The Family Plan does little to break the action-comedy mold, an incredibly charismatic performance from Wahlberg and some well-executed (if textbook) moments ensure it sits comfortably among the best movies available on Apple TV+.

Cha Cha Real Smooth (2022)

Cha cha real smooth.

A gentle dramedy with a romantic heart, Cha Cha Real Smooth is a great showcase for director, producer, writer, and star Cooper Raiff . The movie follows Andrew (Raiff), a recent college graduate who earns money as a party starter for bar and bat mitzvahs, and he begins dating 32-year-old mother Domino (Dakota Johnson) before things inevitably become more complicated.

The Apple TV+ movie was praised for Raiff’s performance and direction, as well as the story’s touching premise and sincerity. Given even higher acclaim than Raiff’s successful feature film debut, Shithouse , Cha Cha Real Smooth is among the best movies on the streaming service and deserves a watch as the young actor-director continues climbing through the industry.

The Beanie Bubble (2023)

The beanie bubble.

Anyone who had kids or was one themselves in the '90s remembers the Beanie Babies craze that permeated the decade. The Beanie Bubble centers on the toy manufacturer behind the bean-filled stuffies , Ty Warner (Zach Galifianakis), and the three women (Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook, Geraldine Viswanathan) who helped him become a billionaire.

The Beanie Bubble is part of a growing "corporate biopic" trend in cinema, and while it isn't the most original or critically acclaimed of the lot, anyone who collected the toys will be fascinated by their origin story. The main cast's performances have also been praised, particularly Viswanathan's.

Spirited (2022)

Starring A-list comedy actors Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds , the Apple TV+ Original Spirited is a movie musical spin on Charles Dickens' classic story A Christmas Carol . Spirited follows a selfish miser named Clint Briggs (Reynolds) who is taken on a magical journey by the ghosts of Christmas Present (Ferrell), Past (Sunita Mani), and Yet-To-Come (played by Loren G. Woods, voiced by Tracy Morgan). Whether it’s the holiday season or not, Spirited offers enjoyable entertainment from its ensemble cast and talented lead actors, as well as an innovative update to the time-honored parable.

Flora And Son (2023)

Flora and son.

With films like Once , Begin Again , and Sing Street , director John Carney is the master of the feel-good music movie , and Flora and Son is no exception. The film takes place in Dublin, Ireland and sees single mom Flora trying to find a hobby for her rebellious teenage son Max (Orén Kinlan) to keep him out of trouble. She comes across a discarded guitar, and through online guitar lessons with Jeff (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max can rebuild a connection.

Flora and Son is a quiet yet incredibly sweet movie about how a change in perspective and a celebration of the arts can bring people together. Hewson steals the show, but the entire cast is phenomenal, and audiences will get swept away in the film's beautiful music.

Come From Away (2021)

Come from away.

Filmed live at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater in the city of New York during the COVID-19 pandemic for an audience of first responders and 9/11 survivors, Come From Away is a theatrical production about the 7,000 passengers who found themselves stranded in Newfoundland following the 9/11 attacks .

Come From Away reveals the inspiring story of how the residents of Newfoundland and the stranded passengers turned a humanitarian crisis into one of the biggest community efforts that responded to the historic tragedy — balanced with just the right amount of comedic moments. Come From Away is one of the best Apple TV+ films not just for theater lovers, but for anyone looking for a feel-good musical comedy about the innate positive power of humanity.

Ghosted (2023)

From the director of Rocketman , a Top Gun: Maverick producer, and the writer of Deadpool, Ghosted mixes classic tropes of the rom-com and action-adventure genres into a slickly entertaining package. Following the promise of its title, the movie sees Cole (Chris Evans) ghosted, despite forming a seemingly close bond with Sadie (Ana de Armas). Unable to take the rejection, Cole tries to see Sadie in London where she works, but is instead abducted by arms dealers who misidentify him as a legendary CIA operative.

Before Cole gets tortured for information, Sadie arrives to rescue him, revealing her true identity in the process. A fun weekend flick buttressed by two perennially charming Hollywood superstars, Ghosted is a welcome addition to the available action movies on Apple TV+ and was the streaming service's most-watched film debut.

Fingernails (2023)

Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed, and Jeremy Allen White are three of Hollywood's most noteworthy young actors, and they star together in Apple TV+'s sci-fi romance, Fingernails . In the movie, scientists have developed a test couples can take to determine if they are really in love. Anna (Buckley) and Ryan (White) take the test and get a positive result, though Anna is unsure.

She begins working at the testing institute where she meets co-worker Amir (Ahmed) and develops feelings for him. In an age where dating apps use algorithms to determine potential romantic compatibility, the concept of Fingernails doesn't seem that extreme. It raises poignant questions about science's relationship to love, and the audience will feel compelled to follow Anna on her journey as she tries to find out.

The Tragedy Of Macbeth (2021)

The tragedy of macbeth.

Visually striking direction, courtesy of the masterly Joel Coen, as well as some extremely compelling performances by its cast help make The Tragedy of Macbeth one of the greatest modern Shakespeare adaptations . A shoo-in for any Apple TV+ best movie list, Joel Coen’s solo Macbeth movie stars Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand, Corey Hawkins, and Harry Melling in an incredibly ominous and artistic take on the classic tale. The Tragedy of Macbeth earned three nominations at the 2022 Academy Awards, including Best Actor (Washington), Best Production Design, and Best Cinematography, further highlighting its credentials.

Sharper (2023)

An edge-of-the-seat dramatic thriller, Sharper is a welcome addition to the neo-noir crime genre. The movie revolves around a con artist who targets Manhattan billionaires, yet is inventively told through a series of non-linear vignettes from different perspectives. Sharper 's star-studded cast includes Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, and John Lithgow , who all work together to expertly steer the twisty and labyrinthine narrative. With a 70% score from critics and 74% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a surprise ending, Sharper offers a smart update to the classic crime caper formula.

The Boy, The Mole, The Fox & The Horse (2022)

The boy, the mole, the fox & the horse.

Despite its short runtime, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse earns its place among Apple TV+'s best movies. Based on Charlie Mackesy's 2019 children’s book of the same name, the film follows its four eponymous characters as they travel together on a quest to find a home. The Apple TV+ Original has achieved plenty of acclaim from critics and audiences, including a nomination for Best Animated Short Film at the 2023 Academy Awards and a win for Best British Short Animation at the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards.

Girls State (2024)

Girls State is one of the most intriguing political documentaries of the last few years, and a solid addition to the AppleTV+ lineup of documentary movies. Released in 2024 to a resoundingly successful debut at the Sundance Film Festival, Girls State follows 500 girls from Missouri. Specifically, it dives into the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program in which groups of high school juniors meet for a week at camp with the goal of attempting to build and run a hypothetical government from the ground up.

Gives fascinating insight into the political views, aspirations, and ideas of young women in modern-day America.

The documentary was created by Jesse Moss and Amanda McBain and gives fascinating insight into the political views, aspirations, and ideas of young women in modern-day America. It's a companion movie to Moss and McBaine's 2020 documentary Boys State. However, since the focus is now on female participants in the program, Girls State offers an almost entirely different and unique perspective — especially since the world and political landscape has changed significantly in the few years since 2020.

The Accountant

Christian Wolff is a math savant with an extraordinary mind for numbers. But Christian’s talents aren’t used for typical accounting. He works undercover, meticulously untangling the financial records of dangerous criminal organizations. When Christian takes on a seemingly straightforward job for a legitimate company, things take a deadly turn. The Accountant has heart-pounding action sequences that showcase Christian’s exceptional fighting skills. The film’s choreography and fight scenes are a highlight. While the action is thrilling, the movie also offers a sympathetic portrayal of its protagonist, making him a character you can’t help but root for.

Arrival is a sci-fi film that goes beyond spaceships and explosions. Mysterious extraterrestrial vessels arrive at across the globe, forcing linguistics professor Louise Banks into a high-stakes mission. The military recruits her to decipher the language of the aliens. As tensions escalate between nations, Louise must find a way to communicate before humanity makes a potentially catastrophic mistake.

Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow throws Tom Cruise into a sci-fi warzone. Major Bill Cage finds himself on the frontlines against an unbeatable alien force. Killed in battle, Cage awakens to a horrifying reality – he’s reliving the same day over and over again. Each loop offers Cage a chance to improve his combat, mentored by Rita Vrataski (played by Emily Blunt). With each repetition, they solve the secrets of the alien enemy and strategize a way to break the loop and turn the tide of the war. So, watch as Cage fights, dies, and learns his way to victory… one time loop at a time.

This 2020 release puts Tom Hanks at the helm (literally and figuratively) as Captain Ernest Krause. He is a seasoned Navy veteran charged with his first wartime command. Krause’s mission is anything but ordinary. He has to lead a convoy of 37 Allied ships carrying thousands of soldiers and vital supplies across the “Black Pit” of the Atlantic during World War II. The danger is ever-present with Nazi U-boats prowling the depths. Greyhound throws viewers into the heart of the action, making you feel the weight of responsibility on Krause’s shoulders as he makes life-or-death decisions for his crew and the vital cargo they carry.

Killers of the Flower Moon

Directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese this movie takes you on a journey through a dark chapter in American history. Set in 1920s Oklahoma, the story develops as oil is discovered on land belonging to the Osage Nation. This newfound wealth transforms the Osage people into some of the richest individuals in the country. However, this prosperity attracts a sinister side – greedy outsiders who manipulate, and exploit to steal the Osage fortune. Killers of the Flower Moon is a beautifully crafted film with an outstanding cast. DiCaprio and Gladstone give compelling performances, drawing you into their complex relationship and the fight for justice. Scorsese masterfully weaves a suspenseful narrative that exposes the corruption and brutality of the era.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Max Rockatansky is a hardened drifter who is captured by Immortan Joe. Joe is a tyrannical warlord who hoards water and rules a desert fortress called the Citadel. Joe’s grip on power hinges on the control of five women. But Imperator Furiosa, one of Joe’s most trusted lieutenants makes a daring escape with the women. She is seeking a mythical “Green Place” rumored to exist beyond the wasteland. Max is caught in the crossfire and becomes unwillingly entangled in Furiosa’s rebellion. The action sequences in Mad Max: Fury Road are relentless and exhilarating, with stunning stunt work. But beneath the roar of engines and explosions lies a surprisingly human story. Max and Furiosa are both deeply scarred by past traumas, yet they find strength and redemption in their fight for survival and a chance at a better future.

Napoleon is a nuanced exploration of the man behind the legend. The film takes you on a journey through Napoleon’s rise from a Corsican outsider to the ruler of a vast empire. But it doesn’t shy away from the darkness that accompanied his ambition. We see his ruthlessness and strategic brilliance intertwined with his personal struggles and vulnerabilities. Joaquin Phoenix delivers a magnetic performance as Napoleon, capturing his ambition, charisma, and inner turmoil. The supporting cast is equally impressive, bringing to life the figures who shaped Napoleon’s destiny.

Henk Rogers is a determined but down-on-his-luck salesman who stumbles upon Tetris at a trade show in 1988. Immediately intrigued by the game’s addictive simplicity and universal appeal, Rogers sets his sights on bringing Tetris to the West. However, his journey takes him deep behind the Iron Curtain, where the rights to the game are entangled in a complex web of Soviet bureaucracy and competing interests.
