Australia Zoo - Behind The Scenes Tour

We had a family of 8 and we did the Behind the Scenes Tour. It cost us $240 on top of our entry fee. We saw absolutely NOTHING!!! The tour guide was absolutely lovely and truly tried so hard to make it interesting- but there was NOTHING to see except old sheds old houses the old Rhino out the back and the proposed elephant walk under construction. Then we got to see where they had cleared an area that was to be where Bindi was to be married but was now a dirt patch - how exciting - not. This was where you could see all the giraffes and Rhinos BUT!!! so could all the other people who had walked to the Africa section. AND They were actually closer to them than we were. TOTAL RIP OFF. We have been many times to Australia Zoo over many years. This was sooo disappointing. Steve would cringe - I am sure. I had tears in my eyes watching the videos of him and his old loveable ways when we sat in the Crocoseuim waiting for the show - And Bindi’s wedding video. Such a shame that this tour had to spoil our visit. Just don’t do it!! There must be something better to offer people.

Nothing much I can say except get there if you can. Cost is exceptionally reasonable and goes to a great cause. Couldn't do it all in a day. Great show too. Lemur Island is amazing but it is all superb.

australia zoo behind the scenes tour

We had a great day at the zoo. There is lots to see and do while there. I recommend catching the shuttle from the entry around to Africa and starting there and walking around. Bindi's Island was great to see Lemurs up close. We had lunch at the Crikey Cafe they had a great range of food choices and lots of seating. While at the zoo don't miss the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Show, lots of free flight birds and some reptiles and the hero of the show the Croc show we where lucky to see Robert Irwin and Chandler doing the show with Casper the Croc. was an enjoyable day well worth the visit'

australia zoo behind the scenes tour

A little bit of America and a chunk of Australia, make up this first-class private zoo. Their reptile house is better presented than Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney or Auckland Zoos. All the enclosures were well maintained and all the animals and birds looked healthy and well fed. The standard of enclosure presentation for each animal was world class. This included how clean the crocodile enclosures where. We did two photo experiences the Eagle and the Cheetah, both gave u time with the keepers and the animal/bird and worth the time effort, patting the Cheetah you could feel it purring. We watched the main show and were stunned by the free flight demonstration and of course the usual or unusual crocodile show. Depending on your views. We were their for 7 hours,

australia zoo behind the scenes tour

we had a good day here and a good time. we booked two animal experiences and they were wonderful. The zoo is large and spacious and there is a lot to see. I would reccomend allowing at least half a day (we arrived shortly after 8 for an animal encounter, and left shortly before 1.)

We spent 2 days at the Zoo. The first day we did the Meerkat experience ($99 each) which was great. On the second day we did the Caddy Tour with Amy and Maddy. These 2 ladies were amazing. They made our day. They drove us on the caddy to every section of the Zoo and we had VIP seats at the Crocoseum. Thank you ladies, a week later we are still talking about you!

Food, water and shelter are hard to find in the desert. Avoiding predators and scorching temperatures are also the challenges desert plants and animals must face. In Arizona, there are four deserts, each one unique and presenting different trials. Through the Exploring Arizona Guided Tour, participants explore and learn about several desert animals along the Phoenix Zoo’s Arizona Trail by comparing and contrasting their habitats and adaptations. A Zoo instructor will guide discussion groups to uncover how various Arizona animals survive in the harsh extremes of our state deserts.

Dynamic Deserts: Exploring Desert Conservation (9-12 grades)

Conservation in the desert requires a unique understanding and perspective of one of nature’s harshest, and often misunderstood, biomes. With scarce resources and fierce competition, life in the desert has adapted creative techniques for survival. During this tour, a Zoo instructor will lead participants on the Arizona Trail while exploring different adaptations from our resident plants and animals, and the impact humans play on this surprisingly rich and diverse ecosystem.

More Than a Zookeeper (10-12 grades)

How many people does it take to run a zoo? There’s a lot of work going on every day at the Phoenix Zoo that many never even notice. Throughout the More Than a Zookeeper Guided Tour, participants will view the zoo from a different perspective. A zoo instructor will lead the group in discussions and an activity, while exploring some of the jobs necessary to run a successful zoo and conservation program. Participants will discover the importance of the Phoenix Zoo’s role in conservation while uncovering STEM career opportunities along the way.

Enriching Experiences: Exploring Behavioral Enrichment (K-12)

Movies, music and video games provide us with hours of entertainment, but what does a zoo do to keep a monkey from getting bored or a zebra from being stressed? Behavioral Enrichment! By providing mental and physical stimulation through naturalistic settings and environmental enhancements, managed setting animals’ lives are greatly improved. The benefits include increased natural behaviors and healthy, stress-free individuals. The Enriching Experiences Guided Tour provides participants with the opportunity to explore and learn about different types of behavioral enrichment used by the Phoenix Zoo through comparing a variety of exhibits and species. Utilizing manipulatives, a Zoo instructor will facilitate observations and discussions to discover some of the intricacies involved in the behavioral management of managed setting animals — making life more stimulating for the Zoo’s animals and guests alike!

Custom Guided Tours are designed based on your specific interests and needs. Our trained Zoo staff works with you to create a completely customizable 60-minute educational walking tour of one of our Zoo trails – covering the exhibits and topics you are interested in.

The Zoo, one of Australia's most revered live music venues, to close down in July

A band on stage at music venue The Zoo in Brisbane with a large crowd watching them perform

Brisbane's The Zoo, one of Australia's most revered live music venues, will close its doors this July.

The 500-capacity venue, which opened in 1992, is one of the longest standing live music spaces in Brisbane's entertainment hub Fortitude Valley.

Over its 32 years it has played host to thousands of the biggest artists from Australia and beyond, with everyone from Powderfinger to Pixies gracing its stage.

In a statement posted to social media this morning, the venue said that it would close as it is no longer financially viable.

"Sadly, the financial reality of keeping music venues afloat in 2024 is all too stark," the statement reads.

"The Zoo reached its highest ticket sales in its 32-year history last year, yet this was still not enough to combat rising operational costs and decreasing returns."

Venue operators say they have been unable to find the support required to keep the venue afloat.

"The hard truth is that we've been running at a loss for over three years," the statement continues.

"Despite exploring every avenue available to us, we could not secure the level of support needed to surmount the continued financial strain.

"We have no choice but to call last drinks for both of our beloved music venues."

Lorde, bathed in red light, sings into a microphone on stage

The owner of the venue also runs Stranded Bar, a cocktail bar and 250-capacity venue next door, which will close from Monday.

The Zoo was the brainchild of young Brisbane women Joc Curran and C Smith. Curran ran the venue until 2016. Current owner Shane Chidgzey took over the venue in 2020.

Attending a gig at The Zoo has been a rite of passage for just about every music fan in Brisbane over the past three decades, and scoring a spot on its stage is a boon for local and touring bands alike.

The news of the venue's closure has prompted an outpouring of sadness from both fans and artists.

"I have had so many amazing nights watching my favourite bands at The Zoo and have played one my favourite shows to date there," Brisbane artist Tia Gostelow wrote on social media.

"I'm so sorry to hear this. The Zoo is so important to the scene," wrote Megan Washington.

In a 2023 report, venue owners around the country told the ABC that small- to medium-sized venues were facing a crisis.

Increased operating costs, the rising cost of living, an influx of high-profile and high-cost international tours, and a cultural shift that has seen young audiences spending less money over the bar have made staying financially viable more challenging than ever.

The Zoo will close its doors for good on Monday July 8. Those holding tickets for concerts after that date will hear from the venue or concert promoters soon.
