Frequently asked questions

There are around 30 cruise ports in Australia, dotted all the way around the coast. Sydney is the country’s largest port, with two terminals in the harbour welcoming hundreds of ships each year. In NSW, cruises regularly visit Newcastle, which is close to the Hunter Valley wine region, and the pretty town of Eden on the far south coast. In Queensland, cruises visit Brisbane, the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef, Cairns, Fraser Island and Moreton Island. You can also venture further north to the remote outposts of Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands, which are almost entirely untouched by tourism. Along the southern coast of Australia, popular ports include Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, Hobart, Adelaide and Kangaroo Island. Darwin in the Northern Territory is close to the famed Kakadu National Park and a great jumping off point for cruises to Indonesia.

More cruise lines are now visiting Western Australia, calling at Perth, Bunbury and Exmouth, where you can swim with whale sharks. The remote Kimberley region along the northern edge of Western Australia is also becoming popular for expedition cruising, with smaller ships taking passengers through its spectacular natural landscapes. These cruises will sail between Darwin and Broome.

An Australian cruise is a great way to get a taste of life at sea. You can start with a short cruise of just three or four nights, which will usually take you on a round trip from your departure point with one or two stops. For example, a popular four-night cruise from Sydney travels north along the coast, stops at Moreton Island (off Brisbane) for one day and then returns to Sydney. Longer cruises can run for seven, 14 or 21 days, taking you to more ports and states. If you want to complete a full circumnavigation of Australia, you’ll be cruising for around 25-30 days.

Cruises operate year-round in Australia, so you can set sail whenever you like. The busiest time is during the warmer months between November and April, which is known as the Wave Season. This period has the most departures and is when many international ships will visit our waters. Spring and autumn have the most pleasant weather and you will be sailing under warm, sunny skies. Remember that school holidays will always be busy and there will be lots of families sailing, so avoid these times if you’d like a bit of peace and quiet. The cruise season in the Kimberley runs from April to October with April and May being the best months to see the waterfalls in full force after the wet season.

Yes, most cruise lines can cater to dietary restrictions. Larger cruise ships will have multiple restaurants on board, so you will have options when looking for menus featuring things like vegetarian or gluten free. If you have more specific or unusual needs, speak to your travel agent when you book and find out if you can submit requests early. The crew and your waiter will also be able to assist on board.

Themed cruises are very popular in Australia, so you will be able to find something fun and quirky to suit your interests. There are cruises themed around country music, Elvis Presley, popular eras like the 80s and 90s, disco, comedy and sporting events like the Melbourne Cup. Australian music themed cruises may even have famous local artists on board. These cruises tend to be short, usually around four or five days, and there are lots of fun activities, decorations and passengers in full costume.

Yes, if you are not an Australian citizen or living here under an approved visa, you will need a tourist visa for an Australian cruise. This applies whether you are flying into an Australian city to begin your cruise or you are arriving by sea when your ship sails into Australian waters. Australian citizens and residents to not need a visa for cruises that only visit Australian ports, even if you sail into international waters.

The whole family will love an Australian cruise. Onboard many of the larger ships sailing here you’ll find family-friendly fun in the form of swimming pools, waterslides, waterparks, sports courts and outdoor games. Most ships have kids’ clubs with separate groups for each age group, ranging from toddlers to teens. They will also host movie nights, interactive game shows and Broadway-style musicals. Most of the ports around Australia will also offer shore excursions suitable for the whole family, from cycling and bushwalks to snorkelling, animal encounters and outdoor adventures.

Certainly! Natural wonders are a highlight of many Australian itineraries. Cruises along the Queensland coast will take you into the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, where you can snorkel, dive and paddle above spectacular technicolour coral. Along the southern edge of Australia, a number of cruise ships now visit Kangaroo Island, considered one of the most biodiverse environments in the country. Visit huge seal colonies, spot koalas in the trees and cruise alongside curious dolphins. The Kimberley region in Western Australia is one of the world’s last true wilderness areas and expedition ships cruising here will visit rugged coastline and isolated archipelagos.

Many of the world’s largest and most advanced ships are cruising in Australian waters, so you can expect a huge range of entertainment and things to do on board. The whole family will enjoy the swimming pools, waterslides, sports courts, mini golf and more. There are also quieter spaces, like games rooms and libraries, are kids’ clubs suitable for young children and teens. Be entertained with live music, theatre, comedy and interactive game shows, as well as regular movies – sometimes screened outside by the pool. There may also be entertainment focused on Australian culture and local performers.

The Australian cruising season has started, and demand is high for the slew of exciting voyages leaving from our ports.

Joel Katz, from Cruise Lines International Association, says cruise lines are reporting strong bookings throughout the 2022-23 summer season. “Australians have always been big cruise fans and they’re now heading back to sea with a lot of enthusiasm,” Katz says.

It’s easy to see why. Leaving to go on holiday from an Australian port, with no need for a long international flight, is so convenient.

“Over coming weeks we’ll see more ships return to Australian waters and I’m sure this will add to the buzz around cruising’s revival,” Katz says.

Now is the time to book in that longed-for sailing from an Australian port. And while some cruises have sold out, the good news is that some exceptional voyages are still available. Here are some of the best where there’s a stateroom with your name on it.

The ultimate cruising checklist for Aussies

australian domestic cruises

So you turn your nose up at the idea of going on a cruise but a huge chunk of people you know have cruised, probably more than once, and LOVE it, and now you are secretly thinking of giving it a try. If you make the right choice, chances are that you will switch to what you thought was the dark side, start planning your next cruise, and the one after that, and dream of all the places you could go. Cruising is addictive and like a favourite cocktail, you can’t stop at one.

The facts speak for themselves. According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australia, 1.24 million Australians went on a cruise in 2019 – the last full year of cruise operations – dropping a cool $5.2 billion into Australia’s economy. It is expected that those figures may well be surpassed this year, with a massive fleet of ships making their way over the Pacific or Indian oceans from the Mediterranean, Caribbean or the polar regions for our summer. Astonishing, really.

And cruise addiction is real. In fact, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said in its 2023 State of the Cruise Industry Report that 85 per cent of travellers who have cruised will cruise again. It is a thing, and for good reason.

australian domestic cruises

What is so good about cruising?

So what is the fuss all about? When you board your ship and go to your cabin, you unpack your suitcase and your toiletries and your book and your laptop and your phone charger and whatever else, and unlike if you are on a bus tour, or a self-drive tour, you don’t have to touch your luggage again. You can even organise to have your laundry done – mostly at a cost – or do it yourself in the guest laundry. Your bed gets made every day – not by you – and your cabin tidied. And every meal is cooked for you. What is not to love about that?

Then there are the number of shore excursions you can do at the places the ship is going, the vast selection of things you can do on the ship, the entertainment – from Broadway-style shows to magic acts to comedy – and the food and beverage choices. It is the best way to travel.

The first toe-in-the-water cruise

If you are unsure if you are going to like cruising or not, best not to book a three-week journey, consider a shorter trip – either a ‘cruise to nowhere’ or better still, choose an itinerary with one or two stops so you get the hang of what a longer cruise would look like. Be mindful that the roundtrip cruises can be a bit more about the socialising – ie can be a bit of a boozefest, so again, choose wisely. Another tip is that if you don’t have kids, don’t go in school holidays when there will be lots of families onboard.

I went on a three-day comedy cruise with P&O out of Sydney for a friend’s 40 th , and it was a lot of laughs – and not just for the comedians. We prebooked a fancier restaurant on board for a special birthday dinner and basically had a great time – I recall there was karaoke in there somewhere! On other occasions I have cruised on short jaunts from Adelaide to Melbourne, and from Adelaide to Fremantle – the latter with a stop in Albany. It is a great way to ease into your new cruise life without needing a passport.

There are many short cruise options, offered by cruise lines including P&O, Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises.

Departure ports

Sydney has the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay, opposite the Sydney Opera House and next to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, also a popular area for boat charter cruises on the harbour . Talk about location, location.  Other ships come in and out of the White Bay Terminal. In Melbourne, Station Pier in Port Phillip Bay is the major port with some ships using GeelongPort, Portland or Phillip Island. Brisbane’s shiny new International Cruise Terminal has been busy since it opened, with a number of ships based there for the season and a host of others offering cruise departures. Adelaide’s cruise action takes place at the Port Adelaide Passenger Terminal in Outer Harbour, while for Perth, Fremantle Cruise Passenger Terminal is where you’ll board or disembark. In Tassie, Hobart’s Macquarie Wharf sees you centrally located in this vibrant city. In Broome, where Kimberley cruises usually start or finish, or have a longer adventure departing Darwin’s new terminal at Fort Hill Wharf. Cairns sees a lot of cruise ship action at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal.

In season

The cruise world is excited for the upcoming cruise season, which generally runs from October to April. According to Joel Katz, Managing Director of CLIA, this year’s summer cruise season is shaping up to be one of Australia’s best yet. Katz said that CLIA is expecting about 70 cruise ships to operate in Australian waters this summer, seeing cruising return to pre-pandemic levels and possibly even beyond that. “This is the summer we’ll see cruising return to pre-pandemic levels in Australia, and perhaps even break new ground,” Katz said.

Three new arrivals are causing quite the stir. Katz said: “One of the most exciting aspects of the coming season is the number of new ships and new cruise lines coming to Australian waters for the first time. Disney Cruise Line ( Disney Wonder ), Virgin Voyages ( Resilient Lady ) and Scenic ( Scenic Eclipse II – from April 2024) will all make maiden visits to local ports this summer, which is fantastic news for cruise fans.”

Oh the places you’ll go

Island time is in your future with idyllic places like Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji popular ports on a cruise from Australia. Picture turquoise lagoons with white-sand beaches shaded by palm trees. The Great Barrier Reef and islands around Papua New Guinea and Indonesia are also gaining in popularity, with Coral Expeditions offering some great itineraries.

Crossing the ditch on a cruise from Australia to New Zealand is easier with more ships offering it. These itineraries, from Melbourne or Sydney to Auckland for example, highlight many stunning places on New Zealand’s North and South islands, such as Milford Sound and the Bay of Islands. Picture yourself kayaking in Marlborough Sounds, hiking in Abel Tasman National Park , or exploring Hobbiton.

The Kimberley is on most peoples’ bucket lists, and why wouldn’t it be. Many ships conduct excellent itineraries to showcase this idyllic part of the world, with everything from expedition ships to luxury small ships and Ponant’s incredible Le Ponant sailing ship luxurious bases from which to see waterfalls, the amazing tides of the region and off ship tours taking you back in time in this amazing landscape.

For true expedition cruising, you can also cruise to Antarctica from Australia. While most people choose to explore this wild, isolated part of the planet on a departure from Ushuaia in South America, there are departures form Hobart in Tasmania, and from Bluff in New Zealand.

Don’t forget insurance!

We all know we need to have travel insurance to go overseas, but having it for domestic travel is just as important . Having a domestic travel insurance policy will let you breathe easy should something go wrong. Your bag might go missing on the flight home, or there might be an unforeseen cancellation. It is always better to be prepared … just in case.

Other helpful tips

Book your tours well ahead of time, as well as your optional dining experiences. If your ship has a spa, also book your massage well ahead.

Read the itinerary so you don’t forget to pack that white outfit for White Night, your Gatsby-inspired gear or whatever else might be on the program. And take some exercise gear. Even if you don’t like yoga, doing it at sunrise, on the deck of a cruise ship is special. You will also need to walk around the decks to counter all that amazing food you will be eating.

All cruise lines have a cashless system on board. Your credit card of choice will be linked to your cruise account to cover things like alcohol – unless you purchase a drinks package – massages, shore tours unless they are included in your cruise fare, and dinners at the specialty restaurants. Another thing to check is what currency your ship has. Some will be in Australian dollars while others might be in US dollars – so be aware! Also check what the policy is re gratuities. On some ships there are none, but on others there will be, so see if they are included, or if not, what is expected.

Every day you will receive a newsletter with the day’s activities on it. Read it – it is full of little gems that you might not have thought of doing. Everything to knitting, doing a French language class, learning how to start a blog, play bridge, join in a trivia quiz and so much more. It might also have a discounted massage or laundry offer.

Don’t expect fast WiFi. Or even good WiFi. Just go with the flow and let yourself relax.

Choose your cabin wisely – an inside cabin might not be great if you are seasick. If you can always go for an outside cabin with windows and better still, a balcony. Sitting on your private balcony watching the ocean, pretty scenery and possibly pods of dolphins at play is one of the joys of cruising.

No matter which cruise in Australia you choose, just go with it … you will be converted.

*A Medicare Card can be used as the only identification for children when all guests share the same last name. In the instance where the parents name differs from the child, they would require an original or certified birth certificate. The Medicare Card can then only be used to list the child and parent are the same family proving guardian ship.

Note: Digital driver licence and digital Medicare cards are not accepted. Please ensure to bring the physical, laminated IDs.

Non-Australian Residents & Citizens

All guests including children must bring a valid Passport. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your cruise ends.

International Sailings Departing From Australia

Accepted Identification for U.S. Citizens

  • U.S. Passport book that is valid at least 6 months after your cruise ends.  A U.S. Passport book is required for sailings that depart from homeports outside of the U.S.
  • For sailings departing from U.S. homeports, an official US state-issued Birth Certificate is also accepted. Guests aged 16 and older that present an official US state-issued Birth Certificate will also need to provide a valid Driver’s License or picture ID issued by the government.
  • U.S. citizens may use Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) as a single form of documentation (instead of both birth certificate and picture ID) for sailings departing from U.S. homeports. Enhanced Driver's Licenses are only available from the following states: Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington State.  Please note that an Enhanced Driver’s License is different from a REAL ID compliant id. An EDL will have a flag on the front.
  • Puerto Rican citizens  should review their birth certificates and ensure they are up to date. Puerto Rican birth certificates issued prior to July 1, 2010 are not valid forms of proof of citizenship.  The Government of Puerto Rico has partnered with document provider VitalChek to provide an expedited method for ordering new birth certificates. To apply through this method please visit:   www.vitalchek.com . Vital Check also offers a bilingual call center available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Processing and shipping fees apply. To apply through this method please call: (866) 842-6765.
  • United States Permanent Residents  must have a United States Permanent Resident Card. Additionally, a passport from your home country is strongly recommended.  Click here  for additional information.
  • For all sailings that visit Colombia , all guests will be required to present a passport book valid for at least 6 months after the sailing’s return date in order to board. Colombian Customs and Immigration requires all visitors to have a valid passport book and will not accept any other travel documents for entry. Unfortunately, any guests without a valid passport book will be denied boarding.

No refunds will be given to individuals who fail to bring proper documentation.

For additional United States passport information  visit the  United States Department of State travel information website . Visa Central is the passport and visa service that we recommend, should our guests need passport and visa assistance. You may contact Visa Central for all your passport needs. Visa Central can obtain passports in as little as one day.  US Residents , please contact  VisaCentral  online, email [email protected] or  call 800-858-8579,  and be sure to reference Royal Caribbean  account 44988  for reduced service fees.

Accepted Identification for International Guests (non-U.S. Citizens)

  • For US Sailings:  Non-US Citizens will require a passport valid at least 6 months after your cruise ends and the necessary visa for entry into the United States. On Transatlantic and Transpacific sailings European and Chinese guests will require ESTA (Europe) and EVUS (China). ESTAs are mandatory for everyone travelling to the US. You must apply for an ESTA no later than 72 hours before departing for the United States. Real-time approvals are not available and arriving at the airport without a previously approved ESTA will likely result in being denied boarding.
  • For cruises departing Australia calling into only Australian ports , Australian citizens require either a valid passport or government issued pictured and laminated ID card to be used as identification. Children aged 17 years and under will require a passport or Birth Certificate to travel or government issued photo ID. Children under 16 years of age, who do not have a passport or Photo ID , must have a copy of their birth certificate or their parents Medicare Card.
  • For all other nationalities, a passport (plus visa if needed in Australia) is required.
  • UK citizens  (including children and infants) must have their own full 10 year (5 year for children) passport with at least 3 months validity from the end of the cruise on sailings in the EU (Schengen area). On sailings leaving the EU (Schengen area): passport must be valid for 6 months after return home.
  • For further passport, visa and health advice for your destinations please visit the FCO (UK) or DFA (Ireland) websites, have a look at our visa page* or refer to our Booking Conditions.

*Visa Central is the passport and visa service that we recommend, should our guests need passport and visa assistance. You may contact Visa Central for all your passport needs. Visa Central can obtain passports in as little as one day.  Canada residents , please contact  www.visacentral.ca , email [email protected] or  call 8888-665-9956,  and be sure to reference Royal Caribbean  account 10026  for reduced service fees.

What if the name on my identification doesn’t match the name on my reservation?

It is important that the name on your reservation be exactly as it is stated on your passport or other official proof of nationality. If your name has changed since your document was issued (e.g., marriage or divorce), it is required that you update the document with the new name or provide an official supporting document (e.g., a state, county or province issued marriage license, divorce decree or legal name change document) of the name change. All documents must be the original or a notarized copy. Additionally, if you are using an identification (e.g., driver's license) and a citizenship document (e.g., birth certificate), then BOTH documents must match the name on your reservation. Otherwise, it may result in delay or possible denial of boarding.

Visa Guidance

It is the responsibility of the guest to identify, obtain and present necessary visas before the start of their cruise vacation. Requirements vary based on the guest’s nationality and countries visiting during the cruise. The following resources may be of assistance to guests in determining if a visa is required.

Some countries that your cruise may visit will require that you obtain a visa prior to arrival. You are responsible for obtaining any necessary visas. If you do not hold proper visa documents, you will be denied boarding without compensation.

Cruises You Can Take Without a Passport

australian domestic cruises

  • Australian Departures
  • International Departures

Whether you’re exploring the wine-growing region of WA, the coral reef and jade-green jungles of tropical North Queensland or joining inner urbanites for a jaunt to Melbourne, there are a plethora of cruises you can take without your passport. Here are five short’n’sweet itineraries that are guaranteed to give you a different perspective on the island nation of Australia.

australian domestic cruises

Cruise line: P&O ’s Pacific Eden Itinerary : Secrets of the South – 7 nights Everyone who takes to the water off Australia’s rugged south coast will agree this is a special experience. This round-trip itinerary bounces along the coast from Sydney, joining the dots between the pretty ports of Eden, Kangaroo Island, Portland and Sydney. A highlight has to be Kangaroo Island, where visitors are almost guaranteed to see sea lions and kangaroos and may even catch a glimpse of an elusive platypus.

Cruise Line: P&O’s Pacific Dawn Itinerary: Barrier Reef Discovery – 7 nights The diverse marine life and countless coral reefs that stretch along the coast between Brisbane and Cairns are just a few of the key attractions on this week-long cruise. The round trip from Brisbane connects the three ports of Airlie Beach, Yorkey’s Knob and Willis Island (an anchor port), offering an exciting array of shore excursions – from river snorkelling to half-day excursions to the reef.

Cruise Line: P&O’s Pacific Jewel Itinerary: A Taste of Tasmania – 5 nights History buffs will enjoy battering through the Bass Strait from Melbourne to learn more about the Tasmanian ports of Burnie, Port Arthur and Hobart. While the five-night round trip from Melbourne allows for plenty of time to learn more about the ghosts of the island state’s past, you can also recharge with a visit to the world-class Museum of Old and New Art and get a taste of Tassie at one of its many award-winning eateries.

Cruise Line: Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas Itinerary: Sampler Cruise from Sydney – 3 nights The idea behind the “cruise to nowhere” concept is to give passengers new to cruising the opportunity to test the waters to determine if they will want to undertake further cruises down the track. As well as putting you in the box seat as you sail in and out of the very postcard-worthy Sydney Harbour, this short voyage gives you the opportunity to take the foot off the pedal and relax.

Cruise Line: Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess Itinerary: Australia Coastal Cruise – 4 nights This round trip from Fremantle includes shore excursions to Albany, the first Western settlement in WA, as well as a visit to the sun-drenched region of Margaret River, where there are a whopping 120 wineries. Sun Princess will be based in Fremantle, and will offer a few short breaks as part of her WA season.

Cruise Line: Cunard ’s Queen Elizabeth Itinerary: Sydney to Brisbane Cruise – 3 nights The Queen Elizabeth is the newest in the Cunard fleet, which was established in 1840. The three-night cruise is a one-way trip from Sydney to Brisbane with a stop-off at Newcastle along the way. The luxury cruise line is as much about navigating your way around all the action on board as it is about the dry land destinations. Don’t miss the signature white-gloved afternoon tea.

Passport requirements for domestic (australian) cruise

Cool Cruiser

I'm due to sail with my family on a Princess cruise in late January from Adelaide to Melbourne in Australia, which I believe is a section of a longer Melbourne to Melbourne return.

I was finally completing our booking information tonight and ID documents were requested. I've put in our passport details as requested, but noticed some fine print down the bottom specifying that passports need to be valid for six months after completion of travel. Two of the four passports do not meet this requirement.

When booking with the travel agents, the specified requirements for domestic cruises was listed merely as photo ID. I assume that being a cruise that originates and visits only Australian ports that immigration matters don't apply, so I'm not sure why the passport is required to be valid for such a long time.

I'll be contacting our travel agents as soon as they open and ask for clarification, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience on ID requirements on princess domestic cruises, particularly within Australia. I really don't want to have to apply for urgent processing of two passports.

Thanks in advance for any assistance, and please be gentle - it's my first time posting!

Current Driver's Licence with photo ID or Proof-Of-Age Card-which I have as due to Legal Blindness I can never get a Driver's Licence will do. I used the Proof-Of-Age card when I sailed the Golden Princess in November 2016, and IIRC a Medicare Card is sufficient for children under 18. Get the Proof-Of-Age Card from the Motor Registration or whatever it's called in your state, there is a cost IIRC mine was under $30 last year, about 14 months ago.

HTH and Enjoy your cruise!

Welcome to Cruise Critic. Crochetcruise' information is correct. You do not need a passport for Australian domestic cruises. Although you did not ask about children, they can cruise using only the family Medicare card as ID.

The original information given to you is incorrect on another matter - Australia does NOT require that passports have an extra six month's validity. Some countries have this requirement, but not Australia. The passport can be used right up until the expiration date. I recently had this confirmed for my daughter who is presently in NZ, travelling on a passport that expires in February.

dazza1234

Passports are definitely not required. Just your car license details.....

trishh

I had the same problem on my recent round Tassie cruise so I know first hand you will be fine. My kids passports had expired but when I rang Princess they said the Medicare card was fine for the 17 year old, and the expired passport was fine for the 20 year old. In fact Princess said they would accept expired passports up to 5 years old. I was still nervous when I got to the port but the check in person didn't blink an eye.It was all fine. Enjoy your cruise.

Thanks so much for all your reassurance. Feeling much less worried now!

GUT2407

Yep, no worries at all.

Didn’t have a passport for outer first few cruises.

Ohhhh must remember to renew it soon as next cruise is to Hawaii. Don’t think they’ll take my d/l for that one.

I am travelling on a domestic cruise (Coastal or Seabreak cruise), do I need a passport?

For domestic cruises (cruises that do not visit a foreign port), a valid passport or government issued photo identification is required (Queensland ‘Adult Proof of Age Card’ will be accepted, however the older version of Queensland ‘Card 18+’ will not be accepted).

For Australian domestic cruises, a current Medicare card can be used for guests under 18 years of age. For New Zealand domestic cruises, an original or certified copy of the child’s birth certificate or a school pass with photo will be accepted for guests under 18 years of age. Guests who do not possess the required ID at check-in will may be denied boarding.

Cruise travel insurance

Cruises provide a relaxed and unique holiday experience but there is nothing more stressful than being unprepared for an unexpected event. Bask in the sun and enjoy added confidence on your holiday with cruise insurance.

australian domestic cruises

Why should you get travel insurance when taking a cruise?

If you're going on a cruise, even just around Australia, it's wise to consider travel insurance. Why? Because unexpected events can occur, and Medicare may not cover you onboard.

Any traveller who is planning to take a cruise should consider purchasing travel insurance, including those travelling with family, friends, or alone. It’s also important to consider how long your cruise is planned to be. A longer trip (over 7 days) provides a greater likelihood of encountering unexpected contingencies during the journey.

Travel insurance for cruises can come in handy in various scenarios, including lost or stolen luggage and belongings, cancelling a pre-booked cruise due to unforeseen circumstances, and accidents at sea.

What if I need medical assistance during the cruise?

Cruise ships, whether they are navigating domestic or international waters, are equipped with medical facilities and staff. However, it's important to note that the role of these onboard medical professionals is mainly to provide initial stabilisation in case of health emergencies.

In situations where a passenger requires urgent and extensive medical care while on a cruise, the response may involve a medical evacuation. This process involves transporting the individual from the ship to the nearest hospital for comprehensive treatment. The cost of such evacuations can vary greatly and often depends on the cruise's location in the world at the time of the emergency. This is a significant consideration, especially in remote or international waters, where evacuation logistics can be complex and expensive.

Does Medicare cover me while I’m on a cruise?

As with all other types of holidays, the unexpected can happen, and you may not be eligible for Medicare once your ship leaves port.

For cruises within Australian waters, it might be a good idea to have travel insurance as claims on Medicare or private health insurance may not be applicable, even on a domestic cruise. Check in advance whether the cruise ship provides access to a Medicare-registered doctor to ensure you have appropriate medical coverage during your journey.

Additionally, cruises travelling between an Australian port and a foreign port are not eligible for Medicare benefits, regardless of the practitioner, and the same goes for journeys between two foreign ports.

Does travel insurance cover existing medical conditions?

Typically, travel insurance policies may include automatic coverage for a range of pre-existing medical conditions. However, it's important to note that not all conditions fall under this automatic coverage . For those that don't, a medical assessment is required to confirm if coverage is available for an additional cost.

During this assessment, the insurer evaluates the risk associated with the specific medical condition and decides whether it can be covered under the policy. This process helps tailor the insurance to your individual health needs, for more comprehensive protection.

It's important to disclose all existing medical conditions and undergo any recommended assessments to secure the most appropriate and extensive coverage for your travel insurance policy.

australian domestic cruises

Why should I get Australia Post’s cruise travel insurance?

While many cruise lines offer their own travel protection plans, these may only provide basic essentials or secondary cover, which might not be as comprehensive as standalone policies.

It may be a good idea to consider a policy backed by a global insurer, Zurich, through the travel insurance provided by Australia Post.

For journeys beyond Australian shores, consider our international travel insurance options.

Our policy includes emergency medical assistance, providing cover for both overseas medical and hospital expenses.

Before finalising any policy, thoroughly review its terms and conditions to clearly understand the coverage scope.

Domestic Cruise Travel Insurance

Compare Travel Insurance Quotes in 30 Seconds

  • 100% free to use. No obligation.

Booking a domestic cruise holiday should be the perfect chance for you to relax and let go of the stresses of the working world. That’s where travel insurance comes in handy, covering you for a range of incidentals which can help you set sail with greater peace of mind, which you can compare right here with Savvy.

With trusted insurance partners from around the country, we help travellers booking their next trip compare options to help find the most suitable policy for their needs. You can start the process right here with us today and have your insurance signed, sealed and delivered before you know it.

What is domestic cruise travel insurance and what does it cover?

Domestic cruise insurance is a type of travel insurance designed to cover you for an Australian-based trip made by boat. Like any other travel insurance, its purpose is to cover a range of events which, should they occur to you, could leave you out of pocket and with an expensive bill to pay off upon your return. In most cases, cruise cover will be available as an optional extra on basic and comprehensive insurance policies, meaning you’ll be required to pay an added premium to ensure you’re covered for your cruise travel.

In terms of what it covers , there are several different events which can be claimed for under travel insurance with cruise cover. This will, of course, vary depending on who you take out insurance with, so it’s important to compare your options carefully to make sure you have the cover you need. These can include:

  • Expenses relating to cancelling your cruise, having it disrupted or resuming it at another date
  • On-board medical treatment, as well as cover for things like sea sickness (as not all cruise doctors will be Medicare-registered)
  • Missed embarkation of the cruise
  • Cabin confinement during your cruise
  • Any missed ports or planned excursions, such as due to mechanical issues or weather

Domestic cover will extend to trips 200km or more from your home or original destination and those enjoying a multi-night cruise. If you’re only spending one night on a cruise ship, you may not be required to add cover to your original policy, nor if you’re on a ferry. In some cases, your comprehensive travel insurance policy will automatically cover you for cruise travel in Australian waters, which can help you save money overall.

On top of these inclusions, your policy will cover you for the standard travel insurance coverage factors, which can include:

  • Damage, loss or theft of personal items such as luggage and valuables
  • Personal liability for injury to a third party or damage to their property (up to $5 million in most cases)
  • Rental car excess should it be damaged during the hire period
  • Cancellation of any other flights or bookings made on your holiday
  • Accidental death whilst away from home

Which features should I consider when comparing domestic cruise travel insurance?

When comparing your domestic travel insurance options, there are several key factors to keep in mind to help you secure the best deal. You can compare offers from a variety of Australia’s top insurance providers right here with Savvy, with some of the key factors to consider in this process including:

Inclusions and exclusions

While all the above may apply to your insurance policy, this won’t always be the case. Insurers will set out their policies and PDS documents in different ways, meaning you may not automatically be covered for all the things you need on one policy compared to another. As such, it’s crucial to always check each insurer’s PDS thoroughly and compare the finer details to ensure you aren’t caught short while at sea.

Benefit limits

When it comes to things like claiming for loss of valuables or rental vehicle excess, limits can apply which cap the amount you’re able to receive. For instance, while one policy may allow you to receive $5,000 worth of cover for item loss, another may set that at $15,000. When comparing policies, make sure the claim limits are suitable for you.

Premium cost

Wherever possible, you should look to avoid paying too much for your cover. While cost shouldn’t be the main factor you look at (as basic insurance is cheaper but covers you for less), you should still compare policies based on their cost. It’s worth considering insurance plans which automatically include cruise cover, rather than requiring you to add it on as an extra.

Excess requirements

Your insurance excess is the sum you pay when making a claim on your policy. While some insurers will allow you to set this at $250 to $500, others may not require you to set on at all in certain circumstances. It’s important to note that the higher your excess, the less costly your premiums are likely to be. Think about your ideal excess cost when comparing your options.

Types of policies available

Travel insurance policies can come in all shapes and sizes to suit a variety of different travellers. While the initial choice can be made for either basic or comprehensive cover, you might also look for a policy to cover your family , a larger group of travellers or even for corporate purposes. Look at each of the offers available when comparing which insurer is the best for you.

Is domestic cruise travel insurance available to seniors?

Yes – if you’re looking for cruise cover as a senior , there are insurance options available to you. Many older Australians enjoy spending their retirement travelling, particularly when it comes to cruising along the Australian coast, so many insurers can offer products to suit your needs. However, it’s important to note that different age limits can apply to travel insurance: while some may only offer cover to travellers up to the age of 65, others can extend this up to 99 years old. Considering different age limits is an important comparison factor for seniors to consider when looking for cruise travel insurance.

Another key element of the process is to find out whether cover is afforded for pre-existing health conditions . This can also differ substantially between providers, as not all conditions will be automatically included. Because of this, you should also compare policies on this basis to ensure you won’t be left empty-handed if you suffer illness or injury whilst at sea. Some of the pre-existing conditions you can receive cover for include:

  • Allergies such as hay fever or eczema
  • Bell’s palsy
  • Diabetes (select types may come at an extra cost)
  • Macular degeneration
  • Coeliac disease
  • Deep vein thrombosis (usually at an extra cost)
  • Heart conditions

Other illnesses, such as terminal cancer, may not be covered at all, so you should assess the options available to you when choosing your ideal domestic travel insurance policy for your next cruise.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

More common questions about domestic cruise travel insurance

Yes – many insurers across Australia today are offering cover for COVID-19-related expenses . This can extend to any treatment you may receive as a result of contracting the virus or cancellations made due to testing positive or becoming a close contact. Specifics may vary between insurers, so you should keep this in mind when deciding on the right policy for you.

Yes – even if you aren’t required to add cruise cover for your short cruise, you’ll still have to tell your insurer about all your travel plans. In this respect, it’s the same as any other multi-night cruise travel insurance. If you make a claim whilst on your cruise without having disclosed you were taking the trip to your insurer, it may not be approved.

Not necessarily – if you’re travelling away from the coastline, a domestic policy may not cover claims made during your cruise. If you’re cruising through destinations like Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island or Christmas Island, you’ll typically be required to take out international travel insurance with cruise cover.

Yes – if you plan on setting sail multiple times throughout the year, it might be more cost-effective for you to take out a multi-trip or annual insurance policy. Instead of insuring you from the start of your trip to the end, a multi-trip policy can cover any travel totalling up to as many as 90 days over 12 months.

Yes – if you’re out at sea and suffer a medical emergency requiring you to be transported back to the mainland, your travel insurance can cover the cost of doing so. This is particularly important, as being airlifted from a ship to a hospital can set you back as much as $100,000 in some cases, so you should look to avoid this hitting your back pocket at all costs.

Yes – most travel insurance policies come with cooling-off periods which allow you to cancel them without charge within a certain timeframe, typically ranging from 14 to 25 days. If you decide against travelling within that period, your premium can be refunded.
