A Guide for Budget Travel With Pets

Budget travel with pets requires some homework.  Pet travel is one of those subjects that deserves some research--not only to save money but to provide the best possible situation for your pet.

Pet Transport: Airlines and Buses

Pet travel on airlines falls into two categories: carry-on and luggage. As you might imagine, both methods for transporting your favorite pet are getting more expensive.

Fees of at least $100 USD one-way are now commonplace. It's one of those  airline fees that might have existed in some form for years. Expect these fees to slowly increase with time.

Much like baggage fee schedules, travelers must dig deeply into the sitemaps of their favorite airline websites to find pet fee information . For example, the pet fees for United  are under a drop down menu for "travel information." In order for your domesticated pet to travel with you in the cabin, reservations are required on flights with cabin pet space available. If space is available, there is a $125 one-way fee and an additional $125 for each stopover longer than 4 hours.

Early reservations are essential when you travel with pets, so you might miss out on last minute deals .

Pet owners argue that since they have paid for leg room as a part of their fare, placing a small animal carrier under the seat should not necessarily incur another charge.

But airlines need revenue to survive, and they are becoming quite good at finding new ways to raise money, charging for blankets, snacks and soft drinks on some flights.

Shipping larger pets as cargo can become extremely expensive. US Airways won't do it at all, citing the high temperatures in hub cities like Las Vegas and Phoenix.

For budget travelers, sometimes there is good news on the pet front. Fees on some carriers have tumbled in recent years.

The New York Times , for example, reported some time ago that Delta had lowered its pet fees from $275 to $175, and the charge is now $125 one-way for pets that are carried onto a domestic flight, down from $150. For international flights the fee is $200.

But each airline approaches this issue with a variety of philosophies.

Frontier once would not accept pets in their cabins—only as cargo. A spokesman called that policy a "customer service issue" because some passengers have allergies or simply a low tolerance of other people's pets. But Frontier now allows certain domesticated pets in its cabins. The Frontier pet policy  is quite specific and bears a careful reading before you head for the airport.

Most major bus lines in the U.S. do not allow the transport of animals other than service dogs. Since budget travelers sometimes take the bus, this isn't good news. Plan accordingly.

Pets and Hotels

Many otherwise reasonably priced hotels will add a pet charge. The reason that "pet-friendly" rooms need constant attention, and this costs money. Most places will also hold you liable for any damage your pet does to carpeting or other furnishings. If your dog barks at night and causes another guest to check out on the first day of a planned three-day stay, expect to hear about it and pay compensation for the loss.

Other places, of course, will not allow pets at any price.

To get a better handle on these lines of acceptance, check out PetsWelcome.com . They claim to have a database of 25 thousand hotels, B&Bs, ski resorts, campgrounds, and beaches that are pet-friendly. Don't automatically assume that your intended hotel prohibits pets if it isn't on their list. Use this resource as a starting point for pricing hotels that will accept your pet, along with noting any additional charges.

Another handy feature on PetsWelcome.com is an international database that includes pet policies in dozens of countries.

Pets and Trains

Amtrak has a limited pet policy. Cats and dogs weighing less than 20 pounds traveling on journeys shorter and 7 hours are allowed aboard for a $26 fee. While it's an improvement on Amtrak's former policy, pets aren't allowed on all train lines. Service animals accompanying passengers with disabilities are also accepted.

It's a different picture aboard most trains in Europe. The heavily traveled lines in France, Germany, and Italy usually allow pets, as do trains operated by national rail in England. For a nice directory of train policies and prices, check PetTravel.com .

Top 5 airlines flying to tampa.

The only thing that would make the experience better is a little more leg room and the overhead bins are very low. I hit my head when I was settling into the middle seat and was nervous about poking my eye on the corner of a lowered bin when I was deplaning.

It helps manage expectations to know that this is a discount airline. I brought my own snacks so that I wouldn't have to buy something if I got hungry or thirsty for soda during the flight. One of my seat mates was unaware that he would have to pay $4 for a Coke and was a bit upset. He hadn't listened to the flight attendant say "Drinks for purchase?". All of the employees I interacted with were friendly and professional. My one complaint is that the overhead bins are very low when they are open. I was heading for the middle seat and unexpectedly hit the top of my head on the bottom of the open overhead bin. The headrests were also a little uncomfortable. But overall, for the price, it was a decent value, and I would fly Breeze again.

Flight was on time. The crew was efficient and kind.

Did not like the fact that I was charged to take on a bag I usually put in the overhead

My flight was delayed, not by much.?very good communication during fest and waiting to board.

Communication with airline electronically was difficult. No number seemed available to talk to customer service.

What could have been better is if Discover credit card would be able to purchase food

Crew was inconsistent in instructions in advising passengers about seat backs during take off. Perfunctory announcements except from cabin.

The experience with Breeze was really great. The app makes managing flights easy. You can check in on there 24 hours in advance, and your boarding pass is there, too. The flight crew and the staff at both our airports were wonderful. Snacks and drinks were reasonably priced. The seats were very comfortable, they even had adjustable headrests on every seat. The only downside is not having entertainment or Wi-Fi available onboard.

The price is amazing. I was worried about how the flight would be as I never flew then. Seats were very comfortable. We had lots of legroom. The Akron airport was really nice. Overall it didn't have the stress we usually experience with flying. Highly recommend

The net issue I had was with the gate agent. We had added a carryon to our boarding pass when we checked bags. When I got to the boarding gate the agent was rude asking why I had a backpack - I said I added it - even had an orange tag on it. She ripped my tag off and swung her monitor around to show me how she was right- saying it isn’t wasn’t listed - only a checked bag. I explained again that I wasn’t sure what the issue was but I wouldn’t have an orange tag if I hadn’t added it. Then she finally checked my husband’s boarding pass and found that the agent at checkin had added my carryon to his boarding pass instead of mine. She sent me on my way without my orange tag. Was a bit embarrassing for me the tone she used with me assuming I was trying to get away with something.

Gate agent asked if I could switch seats so a family could sit together. Agent moved me to a seat in the front of the plane, no charge. It was easy. The agent did a great job.

Great seat space. However food and drink prices outrageous. Jabbing to pay for a carry on bag or stuck paying at the gate too much.

Every Allegiant Air flight I've ever taken has been delayed. This flight was delayed a full 2 hours. It was excuse after excuse after excuse. It was a flight from southern Florida. They made us board the plane on time, but made us wait for 2 hours on the tarmac. Because the engines were kept shut off, so was the air conditioning. One can only imagine how hot the air was in the cabin over those 2 hours on the tarmac, while in the hot Florida sun. Just terrible.

Actually, for the price, I'm willing to put up with a little discomfort (upright chairs) and at times inconveniences (like any airline), lack of entertainment (I can bring my own). My flight was non stop and smooth. I would fly this route again.

The flight was delayed 6 hours and we were only offered an $8 food credit. My husband stood in line to get the credit for 45 minutes and when he got close to the end of the line the computers went down.

Worst ever! Flight cancelled supposedly for weather even though we k ow of many others who flew into Bangor same time no problem. At the airport there was no customer service at all just refund and no possibility of rebook for 3-4 days. Aweful won’t fly with them again!!

It’s a budget airline so adjust expectations accordingly. Nothing is without a fee but such is necessary for tickets to remain so affordable.

No complaints. It’s a budget airline so can’t expect any frills.

My TSA number was missing from my ticket which shouldn’t have happened since it’s in my file. The on board flight attendant who was a male, did not want to help me put my luggage in the overhead bin and made a very rude comment and was very unpleasant. The good… the woman who fixed my ticket with the TSA number was excellent and I had extra legroom which was perfect.

A flight attendant appeared to not be in a good mood that served us; felt she was being short. Overhead announcements were very loud compared to other airlines and the message was not friendly and was a little confusing. This flight was particularly over all was not satisfying compared to previous Sun Country flights.

Airlines should have to add their fees to their fares

I am upset with the hidden fees for bringing on an overhead carryon onto flight and also having to pay for my seat selection. This should all be part of the original price of the ticket. Very poor customer service

Sun country Wi-Fi was not working. Flight was overbooked by two people. Had to pay extra for carryons day before flight and I don’t like hidden fees like that.

WiFi did not work. Woman flight attendant in the rear of the plane was moody.

Flight delayed over 3 hrs due to unexplained issue. No text message to notify.

Well we did not realize at first it was a ground transfer, but we really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend to friends and family. Our driver was awesome and the ride was wonderful. A bathroom on board would have been nice, but at least we were warned that there wasn't one so we went ahead of time.

We were on a fairly long flight and they offered nothing for a snack (unless you paid) and then quickly gave you a drink and were never to be seen again. I would have loved a refill on my water but that was not an option. The flight attendants were standing on ther phone when we boarded and left and never even greeted us. Any other flight I have been on they would have welcomed us on the plane and again greeted us as we got off. Our landline transfer from MSP to Rochester on the other hand was FANTASTIC! We would highly recommend!

Took forever to get the plane loaded and unloaded. Longest I have ever had. I was in the middle of the plane and it almost took a hour after landing to get off of the plane.

Our flight was delayed and there was no communication at the airport.

Spirit canceled the flight in March and never notified me!

Pretty good. Would’ve been excellent if we would have left on time and the crew wasn’t late.

Spirit airline tries to screw you at every opportunity. Spirit wanted 65$ for an extra pound in the suitcase Made me open the suitcase at the counter to remove 1 pound. Staff very cold and rude Will never fly spirit again and will recommend same to family and friends

The weight limit per bag was really low - 40 lbs - so we had to pay extra. Then, they said their carry on size was 14x18x8, and we measured our bag very carefully. It was within the limit, yet they said it was too big, so we ended up paying an extra $100 for that too!! So it wasn’t the cheap flight we thought it would be. Then, they moved up our initial flight to depart 3 hours earlier which meant we had to be out on the road by 7 am and then have a 6 hour layover and we got home at 2am. It was a grueling day. I won’t be flying with them again.

Overall it was a good experience. Stewards were very kind and professional. The departure and arrival times were as promised. Plane was clean.

Terrible as usual!!!! Very unprofessional and rude flight attendants! You get what you pay for! HORRIBLE

My experience was above excellent!!!! First the lady that pushed me in the wheelchair to the gate was outstanding!!! Then the ladies at the gate went over and beyond, by helping me fill out the immigration form! I would not have been able to get to Guatemala without their help!!! God bless them all! They were amazing 🙏❤️🙏

First....my trip was from Ft. Myers to Philly (not the other way around). Plane was clean, staff was friendly and flight was efficient with boarding and flight time. Thumbs up all around.

Early departure and arrival. Cabin very cold. Waited a while for luggage to come out

The no frills ticket price. The seats are very uncomfortable.

I purchased a carry on bag online…was supposed to cost $72 but after a whole slew of bs charges, the total was over $175.00. Because of these hidden charges, I will not even consider flying Frontier ever again. It’s just not worth the hassle. I’m scratching this company off my list forever.

Flight delayed 3 times, resulting in late arrival, rental car place gave car away resulting in increased BS charges because I was late. Frontier blows.

It was impossible to change a carry-on for a checked bag after the initial selection. The flight was delayed 14 hours "to allow for a late arriving aircraft." The seats were shockingly uncomfortable. This was only the second time I've seen seats that didn't recline in an airline. The first was in an East Bloc airline before the fall if the Iron Curtain.

First time flying Frontier, I am not sure the Ala Carte menu of options is for me.

I liked getting off the plane. Everything else was well below standards. Not even offering a bag of peanuts for free for a 4 hours flight is ridiculous.

There was no wifi, there was no usb charger on the planes Frontier lowered the weight limit on suitcases from 50 to 40 pounds Frontier now charges for a seat...really? If i don't pay for a basic seat, do i stand the whole flight? Frontier now charges for the carry on, just like for the checked suitcase The bundle pricing is way over priced.

Bought seats on the flight and they were supposed to be 2 and a jumpseat. Plane clearly changed and it was a regular 3 seat row. Asked for a refund and was denied. If I wanted to sit next to someone else I wouldn't have bought the seats..

Flying frontier reminded me of flying with my family in the 80’s in all of the worst ways possible. From poor customer service to little to no technology. The plane was dirty old and also stuck in the 80’s. From their seatbelts to not having anywhere to charge our phones the seats and the equipment I wasn’t sure if I was being punked or thrown back in time. Needless to say I don’t see myself flying frontier ever again.

Everything was on time and smoothly run. All employees appeared happy and enjoying their job. The delay in take-off was unrelated to anything in Frontier’s control. I wish there were a caffeine-fee, sugar free soda drink option besides water. There are multiple zero sugar caffeine free options.

Everything was on time and smoothly run. All employees appeared happy and enjoying their job. The delay in take-off was unrelated to anything in Frontier’s control.

Table of Contents

Looking for things to do in St Pete Beach, Florida? As a local expert, who knows this area extremely well, I’m sharing my favorite places to make the most of your St Pete Beach vacation.

This article will cover the top things to do, restaurants, bars, and hidden gems which make St Pete Beach my favorite local beach town.

Where is St Pete Beach Located?

erin at Don Cesar

St Pete Beach is a buzzing beach town with a blend of locals and visitors, yet it still has a laid-back vibe. It is located off 1-275 just west of downtown St Petersburg, FL, in Pinellas County.

Below I’ve provided an adjustable Google map so you can easily find your way around.

St Pete Beach is approximately 25 miles from Tampa International Airport on 1-275. Depending on traffic, it’s roughly a 35-minute drive.

St Pete-Clearwater International Airport is closer in proximity at 19 miles away, but it tends to have less carriers. Allegiant Air is the primary option that offers cheap flights to Pinellas County.

What’s to Love About St Pete Beach?

travel cheap with pete

St Pete Beach is known for its sunny days, pristine white sandy beaches, and clear blue waters. It is no wonder why it was ranked the #1 Beach in the US by TripAdvisor in 2021 !

Besides the fact that it’s right on the Gulf of Mexico and Boca Ciega Bay, it is home to the gorgeous pink palace (better known as The Don CeSar ), a 5-star historic hotel with panoramic water views.

Even if you don’t stay at the iconic luxury hotel, there are plenty of fantastic hotels in St Pete Beach for all budgets , including pet-friendly hotels .

So now that we have the basics out of the way let’s get started with the top must-see St Pete Beach things to do!

St Pete Beach Quick Summary & Comparison

The Best Things to Do in St Pete Beach, FL

Gorgeous beach photo with waves, white sandy beaches and grass on a sunny day in St Pete Beach, Florida.

Spend Time at St Pete Beach

Located on a barrier island, the long sandy coastline provides an ideal place to enjoy endless water activities, including kayaking, parasailing, or other recreational activities. You could literally spend days here and still miss some of the fun at the beach!

There are lounge chairs, paddleboards, and numerous other things you can rent right at the beach. Gone are the days when you are forced to pack a ton of equipment!

🌴 Pro Tip: Two of my favorite places to spend time are Upham Beach Park and Pass-a-Grille Beach . 👙

Upham Beach Park

Upham Beach Park in St Pete Beach and Paradise Grill location. What to do in St Pete Beach? Play Volleyball at Upham Beach Park for free.

Upham Beach Park is an attractive location for spending a stunning summer day with friends. A white sandy beach surrounded by beautiful dunes offers a great spot to surf and watch dolphins.

Invite family members to swim, surf, play volleyball, and relax at the beach! It is the most convenient beach spot near Corey Avenue for delicious restaurants, hotels , shops, and more fun!

Upham Beach Park has many options for beach chairs , cabanas, and other rentals available. They even have a free library of beach toys for the kids to use. There are public restrooms here, and the beach is dog-friendly.

Check out my Upham Beach Park article to learn about the secret garden and more local tips!

Snorkeling at Egmont Key State Park

Egmont Key photo of the turquoise water

Egmont Key State Park is a secluded private island only accessible by boat. Since there’s no admission fee (only transportation cost), snorkeling at Egmont Key State Park is one of the best things to do in St Pete Beach for FREE!

The blue-green water is shallow and clear at Egmont Key, so it’s easy to see the beautiful shells and fish swimming around you. Keep your eyes open for old structures that have since been submerged into the Gulf of Mexico. You can also see (and we often do) manatees, dolphins, and other marine life while snorkeling around this island.

Take a break from snorkeling and see some of the island by walking the nature trail. The brick paths will lead you to several structures and a lighthouse that are historic ruins of Fort Dade that date back to 1858.

To stay safe, make sure the current is calm with good weather. Egmont Key State Park is a distance by boat and you don’t want to be out there in a storm.

Bring your own snorkel gear from home to save money. This island gets incredibly hot in the summertime. You’ll definitely want to plan ahead with skin protection and plenty of drinking water and snacks. There are no stores or restrooms on this remote island.

If you prefer to go on a boat tour, there are plenty of options such as Island Ferry of St Pete Beach .

Day Trip to Fort De Soto Park

Photo of white sandy beaches, dunes, and bright blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico at Fort De Soto

There are miles of paved trails, camping and picnic spots, fishing piers, ferry rides to Egmont State Park and Shell Key, and a dog area. Of course, you can’t leave without seeing the old fort and museum!

Equipment rentals are available in the park for kayaks or canoes, paddle boards, and bikes. This makes it convenient to explore. However, if you pack your own equipment, this day trip costs only $5 per vehicle!

Ferry to Shell Key

Boating in Saint Petersburg - photo taken in Shell Key Preserve

Shell Key Preserve is located on 1,800+ acres of undeveloped land. It is a popular place for fishing and boating and a bird sanctuary. Since the island is uninhabited, it is one of the best free things to do in St Pete Beach.

Shell Key is only accessible by boat, and the ferry from Fort De Soto and Pass-a-Grille Beach comes here for day trips. It is also a popular place for kayaking, boating, and shelling.

Pro Tip: This is a remote island with no food or restrooms. Plan accordingly to make the trip more desirable.

While at the unpretentious Merry Pier, check out the local fresh seafood and fishing store. Here you can rent or purchase fishing rods and other fishing equipment.

If you are looking for something different, this is it! There just aren’t a lot of opportunities to do something this unique.

Glass Bottom Kayak Night Tour is a super fun experience that will be one of the most memorable parts of your vacation. The water is very clear, so you will see hundreds of catfish that follow the boats. You can also see bottlenose dolphins, shrimp, starfish, crabs, and other forms of wildlife.

Two can go in one kayak, and if you have a 3rd person in your party, they will be in their own kayak. The outgoing tide may give you more of a workout, but it isn’t unmanageable for most skill levels. Remember that you may get slightly wet from water falling from the paddle.

Bring your camera, the scenery on the night kayaking trip is exceedingly breathtaking!

Pro Tip: Carry a towel in your car for when you finish the experience. You’ll appreciate the option, especially if you get wet. 💧

Pass-a-Grille Beach Art Mart

Year-round on Saturday and Sunday, Pass-a-Grille Beach holds an Art Mart at the beach (weather permitting). Come see fine art and handmade crafts by local artists from 9 am to 2 pm. It is located next to Paradise Grille .

Suntan Art Center

Not able to attend the Art Mart? No worries, the affiliated Suntan Art Center is located next to the Don CeSar Hotel in the Don Vista Building. Help support the local economy by purchasing gorgeous handmade souvenirs at this quaint art gallery. Everything is original, plus they have a variety of pieces from watercolor, oil paintings, jewelry, sculptures, glasswork, and more.

Parking is FREE for those visiting the gallery. They offer a variety of art classes and workshops too.

  • Address: 3300 Gulf Blvd, St Pete Beach, Florida 33706

St Pete Beach Restaurants

RumFish in St. Pete Beach

There are lots of places to eat in St Pete Beach, and it wouldn’t be a tasty itinerary if we didn’t shine a spotlight on a few of our favorite foodie spots. New cafes and restaurants always pop up, but several deserve noteworthy recognition.

Level 11 Elevated Bar & Lounge

Level 11 Elevated Bar & Lounge in St Pete Beach

While in St Pete Beach, you may want to grab a drink or appetizers at Level 11 Elevated Bar & Lounge . It has truly one of the best waterfront views you will find in all of Tampa Bay.

Buoys Waterfront Bar & Grill

As a local, I tend to prefer less touristy options that are hidden gems in the area. Buoys Waterfront is one of my newest favorites for grouper or lobster roll dinner. Parking can be challenging, but they have a parking lot next door. Sit outside on their balcony overlooking Sunset Beach.

RumFish Grill

RumFish Grill is a popular choice amongst tourists for lunch or dinner. Located at the RumFish Beach Resort by Tradewinds, you can get a table next to their 33,500-gallon aquarium while enjoying nightly entertainment.

Shrimpy’s Waterfront

Shrimpy’s Waterfront in St Pete Beach is closer to Treasure Island. Sitting in a shopping strip mall on the water, you could easily pass by this restaurant and not know it’s there. When at Shrimpy’s, get the Jambalaya!

1200 Chophouse

Our long-time favorite steakhouse in St Pete Beach is 1200 Chophouse. This small restaurant tends to stay busy. We either plan to come early or wait until the dinner rush ends since it is first come, first served. You truly can’t go wrong with any of the steaks, as well as the sea bass.

St Pete Beach Ice Cream & Dessert

photo of macarons and chocolate desserts in CocoAddiction in St Pete Beach

CocoAddiction

Calling all dessert lovers, CocoAddiction is one of the best hidden gems of St. Pete Beach. Here, you could almost forget the beach with all the delicious delicacies they have to offer.

CocoAddiction specializes in handmade artisan chocolates, macarons, cakes, pastries, and more! In addition to the melt-in-your-mouth desserts, they have an outstanding coffeehouse that serves Made Coffee.

Larry’s Olde Fashioned Ice Cream & Gelato

A hot day at the beach and ice cream pair so well together! Larry’s Olde Fashioned Ice Cream & Gelato is a favorite spot in St. Pete Beach and a local tradition since 1984. They have over 100 original flavors to choose from and also serve frozen custard, frozen yogurt, and more!

Don’t be surprised to find a line, especially in the evenings. Larry’s also serves savory bites, including hamburgers, hot dogs, pretzels, and other options.

Top Destinations in Pinellas County

While you could spend your days entirely on the beach, there are several top destinations you may want to add to your vacation plans.

John’s Pass Village

Sculley's in John's Pass Village

John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk is often considered the top attraction in Pinellas County. This entertainment complex offers some of the best sightseeing tours to people who travel from all over the globe. There are many shops, bars, and restaurants, as well as several water sports equipment rentals available to hire.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a not-for-profit organization in Clearwater (just north of St Pete Beach). It is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of suffering marine animals.

The aquarium gained worldwide recognition for being where the bottlenose Dolphin, “Winter,” lived. Winter was the main character in the 2009 book Winter’s Tale and, more notably, became the 2011 film Dolphin Tale . If you want to see dolphins up close, you’ll want to visit Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

St Pete Pier

Located in the heart of downtown, St Pete Pier is among the top kid’s things to do in St Petersburg. There are museums, fishing areas, a children’s playground, a water splash pad, and multiple restaurants.

Depending on your interest level, you can see it in less than an hour or spend most of the day. It is FREE to visit and very easy to access since it has its own metered parking area. A trolley is also available from the parking lot to the end of the Pier with drop-off locations.

St Pete Beach Scooter Rental & Golf Cart Fun

Showing golf cart in St Pete Beach

In recent years, golf carts and scooter rentals have become a popular pastime in St Pete Beach. It is a convenient way to see the area without the headache of parking a car. You can hop in your beachfront buggy and see the sights.

They are licensed for road use to see neighboring beach towns or attractions like John’s Pass Village, Treasure Island, etc. Play the scavenger hunt game and see sights you never knew even existed!

Parking at St Pete Beach

While parking can be a challenge during peak times, we have always found a spot. It is best to come earlier in the day for more ideal parking conditions. Most of the parking spaces are metered parking and payable via the ParkMobile App.

Park Smart SPB

The city of St Pete Beach installed Park Smart sensors in the public metered parking areas of Pass-a-Grille. You can download the Park Smart SPB App to see parking availability and avoid driving around for spots.

Freebee Shuttle

Freebee Shuttle is a door-to-door, on-demand transportation service, brought to you by the city of St. Pete Beach. While on the app, check out local deals and offers to save on local attractions.

Definitely a comprehensive guide to St Pete Beach! I’d love to try the snorkeling–and I agree, it’s a great tip to bring your own equipment. My partner and I bought snorkels and starting taking them on beach trips–it’s made a huge difference and probably saved some money by now. The best part is that you can control whose mouths have been on your snorkel before you had a chance to use it!

I’d definitely try snorkeling at Egmont Key State Park!

Such a detailed guide to St Pete Beach for first-time visitors! I’d definitely rent a scooter, ride around and take photos of all the beautiful sights here.

I have only been to Florida once, and that was to Orlando for a wedding, but St Petersburg and the adjacent islands have always intrigued me. So much to do ! I would love the snorkelling and the trails. Would also love to check out some of their museums

I’m overdue for a trip to the west coast of Florida. Saving this for later to make sure I hit all the good spots.

Wow! So many things to do in st Pete beach. Thank you for sharing.

For someone who lives in Georgia and has spent a fair amount of time in FL, I’ve never been to St. Pete’s Beach. After reading your post, I’m so intrigued and definitely think I’ve been missing out. Love that there is so much to do for families and couples. Thanks for sharing all these ideas. Adding it to my FL list now.

1. best overall – plaza beach hotel beachfront resort.

Plaza Beach Hotel Beachfront Resort

There’s so much more than a perfect location going for it as an accommodation option, though, from its well-stocked beach bar to an outdoor pool.

This local favorite is great for those looking to get away from it all thanks to its tranquil atmosphere and abundance of beach necessities like beach chairs and cabanas, but you can also get the blood pumping by signing up for water sports through the hotel.

2. Best Small Hotel – Bay Palms Waterfront Resort Hotel

Bay Palms Waterfront Resort Hotel

If you’re looking for a more intimate hotel experience that is still in a convenient location and provides plenty of amenities, then Bay Palms Waterfront Resort Hotel should be at the top of your list of St. Pete Beach hotels.

Casual, colorful, and with a focus on high-quality customer service, the island-themed decor and fishing pier with seating will make you feel like you’re a million miles away from the busy yet beautiful beach, even though you’re within walking distance of the sand.

Like most other beach resorts in town, Bay Palms Waterfront Resort Hotel is also home to a heated outdoor pool, delivers free wi-fi for guests, and has that all-important air conditioning so you can sleep without sweating. Add in the charming staff, and you have a wonderful place to spend your St Pete beach vacation.

3. Best Luxury Hotel – The Don Cesar

The Don Cesar

Known affectionately as the Pink Palace, this elegant and iconic hotel has seen illustrious guests like F. Scott Fitzgerald stay in its rooms.

But while The Don Cesar retains a touch of that Roaring Twenties glamor, it has every modern amenity visitors could want, from flat-screen TVs to Keurig coffee makers.

The hotel is also in a convenient location for those who want beach access and allows the hiring of items like beach chairs to make sure your day by the sea is as easy to plan as possible.

In addition to all of this, there’s also an on-site sports bar, a number of great restaurants (including a top-quality fresh seafood spot), 2 heated outdoor pools, and a wellness spa. When you also consider the fact the rooms are bright, airy, and beautifully decorated, then it’s no surprise to find out that this is one of the most popular hotels in all of St. Pete Beach.

4. Best Hotel for Beach Access – Hilton Garden Inn St. Pete Beach

Hilton Garden Inn St. Pete Beach

Situated right on the Gulf of Mexico (and providing views of the water as it sparkles under the sun), the Hilton Garden Inn St. Pete Beach is one of the most beautiful places to stay in the entire area.

While it’s in a prime spot for beach access, the resort is also only a short drive from the Salvador Dali Museum and other cultural highlights, so you can enrich your mind while relaxing on the bone-white beach.

With an on-site restaurant and tiki bar, a visit here is a slice of the tropical life. The colorful rooms only add to the relaxed vibe, a feeling that’s further accentuated by the brilliant staff who seem to be able to anticipate your needs before you even know you have them. 5. Best Hotel for Activities – RumFish Beach Resort by Tradewinds

A big part of the appeal of St. Pete Beach is the fact that you can while away the day with your toes dug into the sand.

But if you’re more of an active vacationer, then RumFish Beach Resort will be one of the best hotels in St. Pete for your needs. The laidback sister hotel of the Tradewinds Island Grand Beach Resort, it still has all of the amenities you could want in an accommodation option, while also delivering on a more social vibe.

There are two pools, including one for just adults, and if you’re keen on getting the blood pumping there’s also equipment like paddle boards that can be taken out. Additionally, guests have access to the facilities at the larger sister resort, so you can play tennis, volleyball, mini-golf, and go on the water slide.

Best of all, you can top off your experience with a few drinks at one of the beach bars.

6. Best Budget Hotel – Palm Crest Resort Motel

Palm Crest Resort Motel

Compared to a lot of Florida destinations, St. Pete Beach is relatively affordable.

And if you’re looking to get even more bang for your vacation buck, Palm Crest Resort Motel is without a doubt the best hotel in the city for those on a budget. Located in a gorgeous spot that overlooks the gulf, this family-run motel shows that doing the simple things right makes for just as good an experience as a hotel with all the bells and whistles.

Great customer service combines with amenities like a heated outdoor pool, a beachfront sundeck, and even a shuffleboard court to make for a great accommodation option. The lounge areas might not have the pizzazz of some other hotels on this list, but they’re comfortable and deliver sweeping sea views.

The parking lot is also free for guests to use, so you can either drive down or rent a car and be able to explore everything the town has to offer without spending a ton on parking. A truly excellent option, and one of the most popular hotels in St. Pete Beach for a reason.

7. Best Hotel for Families – Bayview Plaza Waterfront Resort

Bayview Plaza Waterfront Resort

This St. Pete Beach resort is perfect for family fun. Home to just seven suites, guests get a truly boutique experience at the Bayview Plaza Waterfront Resort, while also being just across the street from one of America’s most beautiful beaches (it even has its own private beach cordoned off).

Manatees and dolphins are regular guests in the water opposite too, making for some special animal spotting experiences.

Other hotel amenities include a well-stocked beach bar, a beautifully maintained garden for kids to play in, and even a picnic area. There’s also an outdoor pool if you want to take a dip without getting in the sea, and lots of opportunities to get involved in other fun activities like miniature golf.

Plus, extras like cribs and infant beds are also readily available, so you can enjoy your stay without having to worry about what you might have forgotten to pack.

8. Best Hotel for Getting Away From It All – Coconut Inn Pass-a-Grille Beach

Coconut Inn Pass-a-Grille Beach

The beaches in St. Pete definitely do attract crowds, but if you’re willing to be a short walk away instead of right on the sand, your vacation time can feel completely secluded. This beautiful inn is just a block away from the sea but feels a lot more private thanks to its architecture and location.

Rooms have patios, pool views, and are well-maintained and comfortable. Guests can also borrow bikes to cycle around the city, or if you’re feeling lazy you can sit under the shade of a furnished gazebo surrounded by the greenery of the hotel. Beach chairs are also complimentary, so if you do hit the sand you’ll have somewhere to sit.

Coconut Inn Pass-a-Grille truly does combine a convenient location with a big helping of privacy, so you can enjoy your St Pete Beach vacation in peace.

Best St Pete Beach Hotels Guide

Introduction.

With so much to see and do in this Florida destination, you might think that hotel selection isn’t as important as other factors when it comes to a St. Pete Beach vacation.

However, it’s vital that you choose an accommodation option that fits your specific needs, as the right hotel will undoubtedly enhance your stay, whereas choosing incorrectly could leave a sour taste in your mouth.

Whether you want to be within walking distance of good restaurants, have water sports equipment at your fingertips, or are only keen to lounge on a private beach, then there are some things you must take into account when selecting a St Pete Beach hotel.

Here are the four biggest factors we think you need to pay attention to when booking.

Like many Florida vacation hotspots, St. Pete Beach is home to a plethora of hotels at every price point.

While it is roughly true that you get what you pay for, that doesn’t necessarily mean that less expensive options will be inherently worse than fancier hotels and resorts that cost more.

No matter what your budgetary constraints are, you’ll be able to find something great in St. Pete Beach, but you would do well to keep costs in mind when selecting accommodation.

Some vacationers will want to do nothing but sit on the beach in St. Pete, whereas others might be excited to explore the cultural delights of the sunny city.

And some holidaymakers may even want to indulge their inner adrenaline lover and try their hands at water sports. Choosing the right hotel means can make whatever you want to do easier. Read reviews and check out what activities are on offer before booking, and you’ll save yourself some hassle once you arrive.

Even if you’re planning on spending most of your time in St. Pete Beach outside of your room, you should still ensure that the hotel has all the amenities you might want.

These might be as basic as free wi-fi and a pool, or something much more specific, like babysitting services or tennis courts. After all, you’ve come on vacation to relax, not to search for cabanas, or spend half your day heading into town for something that you could find in a hotel with a store.

Accommodation flexibility

Everybody wants to be easy-breezy at the beach but sometimes plans change.

Having accommodations with some flexibility can be the difference between a delayed but still fantastic holiday or a big waste of money that ends up causing resentment.

While you may be able to get some deals on non-refundable hotels and resorts because of the nature of the booking, it’s always good to have some wiggle room when booking your St. Pete Beach hotel. If something does happen, you’ll be happy you built in the flexibility.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is st. pete beach walkable.

Yes! St. Pete Beach is mostly walkable, although under the summer sun, it can be a little bit taxing to take a longer stroll, and we would recommend taxis or renting a car if you are planning on heading Downtown.

However, if you’re mostly planning on being by the beach, you will be able to stretch your legs instead of getting in a ride share.

Is St. Pete Beach safe?

Yes, St. Pete Beach is generally an incredibly safe place in terms of crime, especially around the beaches. However, like most places, you should keep your wits about you at night, and avoid going south or west of Downtown into non-tourist zones, as that will increase your chances of being a victim of crime.

In terms of nature, St. Pete Beach is relatively safe, but always exercise caution when going into the sea, or dealing with wildlife. This is especially true if you have young children, as even the most gentle seas can hold some danger.

Is St. Pete Beach just for partying?

Not at all! St. Pete Beach is incredibly family-friendly, and even the bars are generally more about having a relaxing drink rather than getting ready for a big night out. With that said, if you do want to let loose a little, there are plenty of places to socialize and have a dance, so you will be in luck if that’s your plan.

Is the water safe in St. Pete Beach?

Yes, the water is very safe to swim in. The Gulf of Mexico is somewhat enclosed, which means that the worst of the waves are avoided so you can bob around in the sea to your heart’s content. The tap water is also safe to drink, so you don’t have to spend money on plastic bottles that are also bad for the environment.

With its combination of serene beaches, cultural highlights, and thriving hospitality scene, St. Pete Beach is an ideal destination for those who want to lounge under the baking sun to the soundtrack of waves lapping the shore.

Choosing the right hotel for your needs will only add to your experience, ensuring that you can focus on everything that makes this Florida destination such a popular place to visit. We can wholeheartedly recommend our best overall pick, the Plaza Beach Hotel Beachfront Resort , for most travelers looking for a relaxing, yet fun getaway under the Florida sun.

That being said, there really is a St. Pete Beach hotel for every kind of vacation goer, so no matter what you’re planning on doing with your time off, you’ll have a blast here with one of our picks for the best hotels in St. Pete Beach.

15 Free & Cheap Things to Do in St. Petersburg, Florida

I t takes a lot of planning and saving to plan a great vacation, right? Well, being able to have a memorable vacation without breaking the bank is important to most travelers (me included!) — especially if you have kids or multiple friends and family.

Fortunately, there are numerous free and cheap things to do in St. Pete, Florida — making this hot destination in the Sunshine State perfect for budget-conscious travelers. Check out the following free and cheap things to do in St. Pete to plan the perfect vacation (and save some money while you’re at it!).

This helps me keep the content on my website free for you to enjoy!

Cheap Things To Do in St. Pete, Florida (Under $20)

Everyone’s definition of “cheap” is different. However, the following attractions have an entrance fee of $20 or less — making them relatively cheap enough for all travelers (even those on a tight budget!).

1. Skyway Fishing Pier State Park

Dubbed as the longest fishing pier in the world — Skyway Fishing Pier State Park does not disappoint!

When the new bridge was built, the old portions were turned into fishing piers — one on the North and one on the South. Each pier has a concession stand that sells snacks, drinks, and fishing supplies, including rental gear. It costs about $12 for a rod rental and entry, which is good for a 24-hour time period. Fishing licenses are not required.

Spending the day fishing in St. Pete is a great activity for the entire family. Pack a picnic and a cooler full of drinks and enjoy the wide-open spaces on the fishing pier. Don’t forget to bring a beach umbrella, a hat, or some sort of shade for daytime fishing — the Florida sun can be hot and relentless!

2. Fort De Soto Park

Fort De Soto Park is the perfect place to spend the day. This beautiful park included a seven-mile multi-use trail, fishing piers, a dog-friendly beach, kayak and bike rentals, a historic fort and museum, and miles of gorgeous white-sand beaches.

Parking can be a challenge on the weekends, so plan on getting there early (or visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds). Drive through the entirety of the park — there are some great places where you can capture pictures of the Skyway Bridge. The park also has restroom facilities and playgrounds for the kids. It only costs $5 per vehicle to park at Fort De Soto Park, which makes this one of the best cheap things to do in St. Pete!

Ferry services to Egmont Key and Shell Key are also available from Fort De Soto Park. They don’t fit into the “cheap” category — tickets are $45 per adult and $25 per child — but if you’re looking for a spectacular island adventure, taking the ferry is worth the cost!

3. Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve will give you an up close and personal look at a variety of Florida wildlife, especially birds — it has been included on the Great Florida Birding Trail because of the bird species found here. It only costs $3 per adult and $1.50 per child to enter, which easily makes it one of the best cheap things to do in St. Pete, Florida!

When you arrive, pick up a “checklist” from the Lake Maggiore Environmental Education Center filled with different birds, butterflies, reptiles, and amphibians. You can document your findings on the checklist! The Environmental Education Center also offers interactive exhibits and indoor and outdoor activities that highlight the wildlife and natural wonders in Boyd Hill Nature Preserve and the surrounding area.

4. The Ale & the Witch

Hidden in a beautiful courtyard in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg is a bar called The Ale & the Witch .

Yes, we agree — running up a large bar tab is not a “cheap” activity. However, every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, this tap house has free live music in the courtyard, and no purchase is necessary in order to enjoy the tunes! If you do want a drink, this restaurant offers 34 varieties of beer, 14 different wines, and plenty of non-alcoholic beverages. You can usually get a drink (and leave a tip) for under $10 per person.

We recommend arriving early to snag a patio seat, or you can bring your own foldable chair to enjoy the free local music.

5. Sunken Gardens

Sunken Gardens is a stunning botanical garden that has been a part of St. Petersburg since 1911. Mr. Turner bought four acres of land and drained it, leaving a muck that was perfect for his gardening hobby. By the 1930s, he was charging the neighbors to tour his gardens, and the rest, they say, is history.

Sunken Gardens is now a staple attraction in St. Petersburg and is home to over a thousand plant species, including orchids, trees, and flowers. There are even flamingos, tropical birds, and waterfalls in the Sunken Gardens!

Admission is $15 for adults and $6 for children, and you should plan to spend at least an hour wandering through this garden — it is one of St. Pete’s hidden gems ! It’s very peaceful, especially considering it sits along a busy street, and the gift shop is filled with lovely items to take home for your own garden.

Cheap Places to Eat in St. Pete, Florida

In addition to the cheap things to do in St Pete, there are also plenty of inexpensive places to eat. Check out these popular cheap eats in St. Petersburg to add to your list of cheap things to do in St. Pete.

6. Trip’s Diner

Trip’s Diner is a modern diner with a retro “feel” that has recently been awarded the People’s Choice Award by Tampa Bay Times for the best breakfast restaurant. This unassuming establishment serves up traditional diner fare, including breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and more. They have two locations — one in St. Petersburg and one in Tampa.

It usually costs about $10 per person for a meal here, plus the cost of a beverage and tip. If you’re looking for somewhere inexpensive to eat in St. Pete — be sure to add Trip’s Diner to the list.

7. Casita Taqueria

Who doesn’t love tacos? And even better — cheap tacos? If so, you’ll certainly love the delicious Mexican-inspired cuisine served at Casita Taqueria .

Casita Taqueria has three locations in St. Petersburg and offers at least a dozen varieties of tacos served on homemade corn tortillas. Tacos range from $3 to $4.25 each, so you can get a few for $10 to $15 — that’s a pretty cheap meal, right? Casita Taqueria also serves burritos, bowls, salads, tortas, alcoholic beverages, and non-alcoholic drinks, like Mexican Coca-Cola.

8. Dead Bob’s Bar & Restaurant

If you’re searching for a delicious burger you can enjoy near the beach while watching the latest game — from NFL to NBA — you’ll love the cheap eats at Dead Bob’s Bar & Restaurant .

You’ll find plenty of unique burgers on the menu at this local establishment, including the French Dip Burger, The Philly Bob, and The Money Tree Burger. And the best part? All burgers are under $11, so it’s a pretty cheap place to grab a meal. Dead Bob’s is also a great place to stop for an inexpensive breakfast. All their breakfast entrees average between $7 to $8.

Free Things To Do In St. Pete, Florida

In addition to the cheap things to do in St. Pete, there are plenty of free things to do too — you’ll only have to pay for parking. Check out the list of free things to do in St. Pete below!

9. Shine Mural Tour

Did you know there are more than 600 colorful murals that decorate the walls of St. Petersburg? And, since 2015, the SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival has created more than 150 murals on the streets and walls in and around downtown St. Petersburg.

The best way to see the murals is by joining a walking or biking tour — but these tours will cost a little bit of money. However, this map has the locations of all the murals you can visit — you guessed it — for free! The artists who created these murals are extremely talented, and each of these stunning art pieces tells a story. They’re a ton of fun to find, admire, and snap a photo of — making mural hunting one of the best cheap things to do in St. Pete!

10. John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk

Created by a hurricane in the mid-1800s, John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk is a tourist hotspot that offers kitschy shops, fresh seafood restaurants, and scenic views — if you closely watch the waters, you might see a dolphin or a manatee!

Visiting the village and boardwalk is free, with the expectation of parking. If you’re staying along the beach, utilize Free Beach Ride to save money on parking.

It’s easy to spend a few hours walking through John’s Pass Village and out on the jetty to the Gulf of Mexico. When the deep sea fishing boat comes back to the dock, the crew cleans the fish, throwing the carcasses to the pelicans and seagulls nearby. This is quite the show! We also recommend timing your visit to catch the spectacular sunset.

11. Pinellas Trail

Pinellas Trail is a multi-use trail extending nearly 50 miles from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs. This beautiful trail is a great way to enjoy the outdoors in St. Pete by walking, jogging, skating, or biking (our personal favorite way to explore the trail!).

If you’re driving to St. Pete and can bring your own bicycles to Pinellas Trail, this activity is completely free. Otherwise, there are tons of great bike rental places in St. Pete that can hook you up with durable wheels. In addition to Pinellas Trail, there are many other multi-use trails that link up to Pinellas Trails, so you’ll have plenty of trails to explore.

Downtown St. Pete is also bike-friendly — so take advantage of your bike rental and bring your wheels around downtown, too!

12. St. Pete Beach & Pass-a-Grille Beach

The beaches in St. Pete are top-notch and award-winning Florida beaches. Whether you choose to visit the infamous St. Pete Beach or the quainter Pass-a-Grille Beach — visiting these beautiful white-sand beaches costs nothing!

If you’re not able to find free parking, you’ll likely pay a small fee. There are municipal parking lots along Gulf Boulevard, but if you’re staying on the beach, chances are — your hotel includes parking (woohoo!). Please observe the no parking signs in shopping plazas and on residential streets — you will get towed, and that’s not a fun way to spend your vacation!

Regardless of the time of day, the beach is always spectacular. However, the sunsets along the Gulf Coast of Florida are some of the best in the world! During your beach walk, you may find seashells and parts of sand dollars that have washed ashore. Keep a look out for dolphins — they are spotted very frequently along the coast. You can even rent a glass-bottom kayak to spot the marine life below the water’s surface!

Walking along the beach is tranquil, relaxing, and stress relieving. The kids will be entertained for hours, building sandcastles and splashing in the surf. The beach is also a romantic place to sit together and gaze toward the horizon. It’s no wonder that visiting the beach is one of the best cheap things to do in St. Pete!

13. Morean Arts Center

Morean Arts Center is a non-profit contemporary art gallery that is free and open to the public.

This gallery has a large collection of artwork which can be explored on Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM. You can also visit the Morean Center for Clay — the largest working pottery in the Southeast USA — where you can look at the rotating exhibitions for free.

14. St. Pete Pier

In 2020, St. Petersburg unveiled its newest waterfront gem — the reimagined St. Pete Pier . The pier district utilizes 26 acres of waterfront and includes several restaurants, a playground and splash pad, a beach area, and a fishing deck at the end of the pier. Various art sculptures and a nature walk enhance the experience.

This state-of-the-art structure is free to visit, but parking charges apply. A free shuttle runs from the parking areas, the base of the pier, and out to the pier structure. The views from the pier are breathtaking. Visit Pier Teaki at the top for the best city views — no purchase is necessary.

15. Second Saturday ArtWalk

You guessed it — on the second Saturday of each month, the local art galleries in the Central Arts District, Grand Central District, Warehouse Arts District, Uptown Arts District, and Waterfront District open their doors for the Second Saturday ArtWalk from 5 PM to 9 PM.

This free event is the only time that certain galleries are open to the public, so it’s a really special time to explore the artwork in St. Petersburg. Definitely don’t miss out on this event if you’ll be in town — it’s one of the best cheap things to do in St. Pete!
