Basement Jaxx are an electronica duo hailing from Brixton, London, England who formed in 1994. The band have released seven studio albums and have enjoyed massive success in their home country and all across the globe.
Ever since Oasis’ heyday every two-bit guitar group has to talk like they’re going to take over the world. Viva Brother began their first ever gig by saying “If anybody here doesn't want to see the future of music, leave now” and now they’re a punch line, and not even a very good one at that. It leaves a band doomed from the start, cos the reason that Oasis sounded so exciting was that believed every word of what they were saying to the very core, and could back up every outlandish statement they made at that. Save for a very select few, nobody believes anyone else saying they’re going to be legendary for a second. Most of the time bands are formed not out of a desire to change music history or headline Wembley fourteen nights in a row, but out of an honest desire to play and create music.
This was exactly why Basement Jaxx formed and they went on to do everything that Viva Brother said they were destined to do. And thank the music Gods for that. The duo are made up of Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton, who first struck up a friendship at a river boat party over the Thames, and Basement Jaxx was originally the name of their club night. Their original ambition was simple, to put on great parties and release great records, which they did on their Atlantic Jaxx label. However, by 1997 Ratcliffe and Buxton were making their own music and releasing it either on their first E.P’s or their label compilations. Even at this early stage of their career they were doing something revolutionary, releasing music that was as inspired by international music like soul, samba, reggae and house as it was by British institutions like punk and rave. Armand Van Helden summed it up best when he said they took house music and “f***ed it up the ass”.
In 1999 their music got the attention of XL Records, who at that point had given the world The Prodigy and were already as achingly cool as they’d ever be. Their debut album “Remedy” followed and was an instant success with both critics and the public. To wit, the second single from that album “Rendez-Vu” remaining their highest charting single in the U.K, hitting number four in August that year. The single also topped the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in the States, as did their debut single “Red Alert”. High on their debut records success the band toured everywhere that would have them, before hunkering back down to Brixton to work on their follow up.
True to form, part of their work on that follow up was putting on another club night, which they called Rooty. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it became the title of their second album, which was released in 2001. It was another critical and commercial smash, giving the world the deathless hit "Where's Your Head At" in the process. Ever since then they’ve held on to their title of the “other” elder statesmen of British dance music alongside The aforementioned Prodigy with aplomb. They’ve headlined Glastonbury, sold out arenas and collaborated with the likes of Dizzee Rascal and Siouxsie Sioux. They’re a shoo in for the status of national treasures, and it all stemmed from wanting to put on a good party and make some good music. Mission accomplished, I think.
Live reviews
London dance duo Basement Jaxx, from Brixton, have been bringing the party for years now, since the late ‘90s. Their live shows continue to be eccentric, carnival-esque extravaganzas, featuring live musicians, dancers, crazy visuals and a revolving door or guest vocals. They are one of the bands who helped take dance music to the greatest of heights, laying down the foundations for live electronic music shows, which have been replicated year after year by young upstarts.
I’ve seen them so many times at festivals, from Exit Festival in Serbia to London based festivals, and they never disappoint. It would be hard to, with a catalogue of stomping singles such as ‘Red Alert’, ‘Where's Your Head At?’, ‘Romeo’ and ‘Good Luck’, all of which they regularly perform. Often, like at Exit, when they perform ‘Where's Your Head At?’, they bring out a bunch of dancers in monkey costumes, referencing their weird and wonderful video from it – showing that their tongues are firmly in their cheeks. The best time I saw them was up-close and personal in the relatively intimate settings of KOKO in London. Their sound was perfect and the energy they brought to the stage rivalled that of any other ‘90s dance act. This is how live dance music should be done: with heavy doses of pop, soul, rock and a taste for the theatrical.
Report as inappropriate
Having seen Basement Jaxx four times in the early 00's, I have to say that this collaboration with the TMO, was a bit of a let down.
Simon really didn't seem to be interested, and they walked off stage without giving the Melbourne crowd an encore - despite some of the orchestra getting back into their seats to perform one.
Most of us there were 40+ ex-ravers and Jaxx fans than curious artsy orchestra people.
While the orchestra and variety of singers did a great job, there was definitely something missing here....a banging version of 'Where's Your Head At' or medley banged out as a finale. Having accapella and slow versions of Romeo and Where's Your Head At? were impossible to get out your seat to dance. We jumped out as often as we could all night.
Having a per-pubescent ballet dancer on stage was a miss. It was a distraction and had most people questioning 'where's their head at?'
Believe me, you can still use classical musicians to bang out some fun hits. We have seen Above & Beyond, Hardwell, Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dyk all collaborate with orchestras and delver.
Sadly Basement Jaxx didn't deliver on this occasion.
Basement Jaxx is the electro/dance brain child of Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton. The UK duo has enjoyed a celebrated and commercial career with a number of their singles becoming hits in their homeland as well as having the prestigious opportunity to headline the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury Festival. The reason Basement Jaxx has attained such relevance though is due to the huge production values of their live show.
The whole performance has been carefully designed and moves between the huge dance floor fillers such as 'Red Alert' and 'Rendez-Vous' into the more progressional electro in such succinct manner it keeps the crowds jumping and dancing all evening. There are robots involved, carnival dancers and stage invasions aplenty to add to the hedonistic experience of the show and the whole entity can become quite overwhelming at times as you start to lose exactly what it is you should be focusing on. There are few acts who turn a live show into a fully fledged production, Basement Jaxx are a great modern day example of the importance of show.
In no way shape or form was this BASEMENT JAXX let alone Basement Jaxx vs the Sydney Orchestra. The description was completely misleading and at the extravagant cost of the tickets - needless to say I was thoroughly disappointed and angry and left half way through.
Basement Jaxx vs The Sydney Orchestra... laughable
Juce and Ella Eyre were great support acts to get the crowd in the mood for the Basement Jaxx - who did not disappoint. Creating a wonderful carnival atmosphere, Basement Jaxx and the troupe sang, danced and entertained - whipping the audience into a frenzy! Fantastic gig!
My third time seeing and meeting these guys and by far the best ! Best night ever won't forget it ! Epic night, they don't charge that much for tickets either so its really the best concert you could ever go to ! I'd fly across the world to see tgen , no question

BASEMENT JAXX TOUR NEW DATES SCHEDULED
BASEMENT JAXX RESCHEDULED TOUR ANNOUNCEMENT
Following extensive consultation with stakeholders nationally and internationally, it is with heavy hearts we confirm that our Basement Jaxx & Roger Sanchez shows must be rescheduled.
Despite Covid-safety planning to have additional safety measures in place for these events, the shows simply cannot go ahead as planned this Easter, due to ongoing restrictions on movement and gathering imposed by Australian Federal and State Governments, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic ;
- The Federal-Govt imposed restrictions on visas and international arrivals, along with mandatory quarantine requirements, precluding international artists from travelling to Australia as scheduled; and
- State Government imposed Public Health Orders in NSW, Victoria, and SA, which to varying degrees still greatly restrict movement & gathering of the public, limit capacity at venues & events, and even prohibit dancing & mingling.
The ongoing issues of border closures and quarantine requirements, and the additional costs involved in meeting all Covid-Safety requirements, heavily impact any international tour’s viability. We are pleased to confirm that all artists and management have agreed to the rescheduled dates.
For our loyal supporters and ticketholders that purchased tickets to these events pre-covid, we thank you for your patience and we understand your disappointment and frustration!! We feel the same way.
The circumstances are beyond our control and to still be here a full year later, despite low case numbers in Australia, could not have been foreseen. It feels unfair, and has been devastating for us.
PLEASE understand the critical position that COVID has brought upon the music and event industry. We have suffered irreparable financial losses and it has brought many of us to our knees. However, despite the impact of COVID, we are determined to survive and deliver this tour.
On this note, we urge you to please hold on to your tickets and support our industry. In doing so you will allow us to persevere and continue to deliver the acts, artists, tours and events that you love.
REFUNDS / CREDIT NOTES:
Your tickets will be 100% valid for the rescheduled dates. If you are unable to make the rescheduled shows, please contact us via the email below. In line with Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) guidelines will are able to offer a full refund in the form of a credit note to use at any of our future events Australia-wide until 01 January 2025.

Simon Ratcliffe on Basement Jaxx’s Australian return & future music projects
- January 31, 2017
Basement Jaxx are currently in Australia for the Electric Gardens Festival , which has been taking the British duo around the country to some large festival crowds. It’s been a prime opportunity for Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton to reconnect with Australian audiences after some time away and even though they haven’t released a studio album since 2014’s Junto , their house DJ sets have been riling up large numbers of punters brilliantly.
Along with the festival sets, Basement Jaxx have been fitting in some exclusive club sets in Australia, hitting Adelaide first and now, eyeing up one last one in Sydney (also set to be their final show on the tour). Speaking with Ratcliffe when they touched down in Sydney ahead of the weekend, he describes their shows in Australia – and NZ – so far.
“It was great,” he remembers of Adelaide. “We were both just off that plane for that gig but it was great. The audience was rocking and it was awesome. It is really gratifying when that happens and you can connect with people. It feels like you’ve done your job, really. You’re getting paid to do a job and you want to make people happy; you want to come away thinking, ‘We’ve done it, that’s great’. When we played in Auckland it was pouring down with rain because they had a storm and people were either going to just leave or stay – foruntately they stayed. They all got drenched but they were drunk enough to stay and have a wicked time, that was awesome. So far, so good!”
Returning to the stage with a DJ show as opposed to the full blown production many fans would have been used to over the years, Basement Jaxx have been able to further indulge in their love for house music and establishing a club vibe for crowds to properly sink their teeth into.
“The live show we did for many years and we put that to bed for a little while,” Ratcliffe explains. “We didn’t want to overexpose it, in a way, and we didn’t want to lose enthusiasm for it. If you do something too much, you lose enthusiasm for it, so we parked that for a while have [since] been DJing. We’ve also been getting on with our lives, you know? I’ve got a daughter and Felix is getting married this summer. We’re working on different projects; I’ve got a blues singer who I’m working with called Geraint Watkins and I’m writing and producing with him. Felix is working too.”
While a new Basement Jaxx album isn’t on the cards for now, Ratcliffe remains excited about the year ahead for the duo. A residency in Ibiza, plus more unique opportunities await. He speaks of the club Mecca of Ibiza particularly fondly.
“There’s no abating with Ibiza, it just keeps going!” he says. “I think there’s more Americans going there now; I love Americans and I love America, so I don’t want to be disparaging about Americans, but there is an element…you don’t want it to become like Vegas, you know? You don’t want it to become like, ‘Fuck yeah man, EDM!’, you know? It’s always had its own world and it’s massive, it’s absolutely huge. It involves tonnes of money and lots of business. Like everything all over the world, it’s expanding and expanding. I hope Ibiza keeps its vibe because it is nice that it’s its own little scene. It’s a privilege that ‘going to the office’ for us, sometimes involves going on a plane and going to Ibiza, it’s such a lovely place to go to. I take things as they come; I just give thanks and appreciate and enjoy it.”
Current and future music projects are keeping both Felix and Simon involved in different realms of the creative side of the industry, though their dynamic when they come together as Basement Jaxx remains tight and in sync as ever. Having been touring and making music for as long as they have now, that’s a relationship not going anywhere.
“We both have varied musical tastes and we’ve done a bit of everything,” Ratcliffe says. “We’ve worked with orchestras, we’ve done film scores, we’ve done art projects, we’ve done underground stuff, we’ve done pop productions…now I’m working with a jazz trio from Prague. I’m also working with this other guy I mentioned before, he’s like an old blues singer; he used to sing with Van Morrison and Paul McCartney. I’m indulging myself in some of that and trying to bring some modern production to what he’s doing. I’m having a go. I don’t know, nobody might ever hear it, but I hope they do. At the same time, I get to go and DJ house music.”
“It’s good to keep things varied,” he adds. “You don’t want things to get to stale, you want to keep yourselves enthusiastic and keep surprising yourself and other people and somehow lead a normal life as well. We’ve all got home lives; I think Felix and I have always had reasonably sensible heads on our shoulders, you know? We’ve not lost ourselves to the world of ego and being excited by all of that. We’ve got our feet on the ground and we see things for what they are; we just make the most of what comes our way.”
Basement Jaxx play their final show in Sydney at Darlinghurst venue Café Del Mar on February 5 th as part of their third birthday celebrations. For more information and tickets, head here .
