The 34 best beaches in the world

The 34 best beaches in the world

There’s something about a good beach that enlivens the senses: the briny scent of salt in the air, the calming murmur of waves, the gentle nip of sand whipped up by the soft breeze. A favourite beach is like a favourite poem – individual, important and something that makes our hearts sing, and now more than ever we are dreaming of days spent wriggling our toes in the sand and wallowing in salty water.

Instead of the typical sandy spots dotted with sun umbrellas and gaggles of tourists, we've sought out spaces that you may have to venture a little further for, but that remain incredibly beautiful and very often crowd-free. From the most exquisite beaches in Europe to far-flung stretches in Asia, Africa and more, these are the best beaches in the world.

Palm Cove Australia

1. Palm Cove Beach, Australia

The combination of leaning palm trees on powdery sand makes Palm Cove Beach the epitome of a tropical paradise. The town itself, located in the tropical northeast of Australia , near the city of Cairns, the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, is home to only 2,000 people, so the sandy stretch is usually free of crowds. Keep an eye out for wildlife though – dolphins and whales can often be seen from the Palm Cover jetty.

2. Honopu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

The only (legal) way to reach remote Honopu is by water, meaning you have to swim from an offshore boat, or from neighboring Kalalau Beach, a quarter of a mile away (fins are a must). But given that the cayenne-coloured cliffs and smooth sands of this isolated spot provided the backdrop for Raiders of the Lost Ark and King Kong , the schlep is cinematically worth it. Since the valley is so isolated, it is also believed to be spiritual, and served as an ancient burial ground for local chiefs. Sleep over at Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa, a sunshiny retreat.

3. Breckon, Shetland

Wedged between two vivid emerald slabs of green pasture, Breckon is somewhat sheltered from the south-westerly winds that roll through these lands. That said, you’ll want to manifest pretty balmy temperatures to brave the often icy waters. It’s a beautiful spot with clear waters and perfectly powdery sands, but all is not as it seems on a clear summer’s day. Many boats have met their end along these shores – learn all about the treacherous sea at the local museum in Burravoe, which details harrowing accounts and displays fascinating artefacts that have washed up over the years.

Wategos Beach Australia

4. Wategos Beach, Australia

The seaside town of Byron Bay may have started as a bohemian enclave but has since grown to become one of Australia’s prime addresses – Matt Damon, Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron all own houses here. And while any stretch of Bryon’s coastline is pretty, the ultimate spot is Wategoes Beach, a sheltered beach lined with screwpine trees and offering up calm swimming conditions. The beach is also home to a popular walk that leads up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse, a particularly scenic spot to be at during sunset.

5. Ora Beach, Indonesia

With a higgledy-piggledy 37,000-mile coastline (the world’s second longest), Indonesia has a glut of beautiful beaches. One of its finest is Ora, snuggled away on the north coast of sparsely populated Seram island. The area is known as Indonesia’s Little Maldives due to its agate seas and white-sugar beaches, but the island still retains something of a wild feel. Seram sits amid several tectonic plates, meaning that the surrounding landscape varies cinematically, from lush, bird-speckled tropical rainforest to ogre-like mountains .

6. Mona Vale Beach, Australia

Less than an hour's drive from Sydney , Mona Vale is the unsung hero of the famed northern beaches. It's technically two beaches separated by a large, sculptural rock. The main beach is a one-kilometre stretch of soft sand, perfect for walking, splashing in the rolling waves and watching the horizon for passing pods of dolphins. There's an ocean-fed lap pool with a children's pool next to it. Days on Mona Vale beach start early – joggers are here from 5am to watch the sunrise before breakfast at the Armchair Collective cafe, families start trickling in around 9am and set up umbrellas as a base camp for a day of boogie boarding, beach picnics and exploring the rockpool. The surfers are always the last to leave, forever holding on for one more wave.

7. Dune du Pilat, France

In the warmer months, Europe’s tallest sand dune, just an hour’s drive from Bordeaux , is cloaked in a constant, shimmering heat haze, giving the illusion that this sprawling French beach is scattered with gleaming treasure. The sand here, which forms peaks as high as 300 feet, is as finely milled as fresh flour, perfect for sausage-rolling your way down to the tussocky Atlantic shoreline and standing to gaze back at the pine forests behind the beach. The surrounding Arcachon Bay holds miles of beaches ripe for exploring, and you’ll find a jumble of huts nearby where fishermen set up tables to sell oysters, pâté and prawns. Book a night at Les Sources de Caudalie , an elegant country retreat.

Noosa beach Australia

8. Noosa Beach, Australia

Quite possibly the most beloved beach within easy reach of Brisbane, Noosa pairs designer boutiques and buzzing restaurants with a sprawling and serene white sand beach. The southern end of the beach typically offers up calm swimming conditions, as well as a classic surf club, while the northern end runs alongside Noosa National Park, which is home to a eucalypt forest and koalas.

9. Awaroa, South Island, New Zealand

Set deep in the heart of New Zealand’s glorious Abel Tasman National Park, Awaroa is hemmed in by clover-green native bush and seas that sparkle like freshly blown glass. Most visitors come here either by water – swooshing in on kayaks or small boats – or on foot, to ramble around the park’s lush forests. It has an important place in the hearts of the locals, who banded together to crowdfund the purchase of the privately held beachfront when it came up for sale in 2016, thus giving this pretty part of the planet the nickname the ‘People’s Beach’.

10. Die Plaat, Walker Bay Nature Reserve, South Africa

Don’t be surprised to spot the occasional southern right whale wallowing offshore at Die Plaat, a ruggedly beautiful swath of sand fringed by rocky limestone outcrops near Hermanus, South Africa’s whale capital. Chubby seals slouch on the rocky shoreline here, and you’ll find the ground littered with huge, pearlescent abalone shells. There’s history to be courted in these wind-whipped sands as well; the beach is home to Klipgat Cave, a bat-filled cavern where late Middle Stone Age people lived up to 85,000 years ago (keep your eyes peeled – you may even spot ancient tools on the ground). Stay at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, a 6,177-acre lodge.

11. Grand Anse, Grenada

You’ll find no shortage of beautiful beaches in Grenada, but tranquil, sheltered Grand Anse is one of the best. Two miles of milky-white sand on the western, leeward side of the island , it’s a short water-taxi ride from the capital of St George’s, and is overlooked by some of Grenada’s finest hotels. You won’t want for anything here, whether it’s goblet-sized G&Ts, market stalls or seahorses that swoosh around snorkellers.

12. Keem Bay, Achill Island, Ireland

It’s a windy road to Keem Bay, but the staggering cliff-top views are worth it. This sheltered inlet, on Achill Island in County Mayo, is almost unknown to visitors, but its clear malachite waters and soft biscuit sand make it a family-friendly spot – that’s also wonderfully crowd-free. Bring binoculars for spotting basking sharks; in warmer months you’ll find herds of ice-cream vans in the car park.

13. Fakarava, French Polynesia

With its collection of easily accessible white and pink sand beaches, Fakarava – one of the largest atolls in French Polynesia – is one of the best snorkelling locations in the world, with consistently warm waters. While the sea is a safe haven for rare fish, fluorescent corals and ‘walls’ of sharks that pass close by the shore, the unblemished beaches have a claim to fame as the inspiration for Matisse’s bleu period. The artist spent three months in nearby Tahiti in 1930, and was enthralled by the lagoons’ infinite blues.

14. Marathonisi, Zakynthos, Greece

Better known as Turtle Island, the spotless white-sand islet of Marathonisi is a vital nesting spot for endangered loggerhead sea turtles, meaning visitors must stay within five metres of the water to avoid disturbing them. Fill your lungs with the pine-scented air before exploring the surrounding sea caves by snorkel or boat but be sure to bring supplies: you’ll find nothing on this Greek Island beach but seals, turtles and forests. Calm, smart design hangout Olea All Suite Hotel reflects Zakynthos's more relaxed side.

15. Praia do Sancho, Brazil

Found on Fernando de Noronha, an archipelago of volcanic islands between Brazil and Africa , Praia do Sancho is consistently voted one of the world’s best beaches. It’s also one of the hardest to access. Flights from mainland Brazil take about an hour, then you must hike, scooch down narrow rock tunnels and descend steep ladder steps to reach the golden palm-fringed sands. You have to pay an environment tax to get in, as the area is a National Park (head to the park’s offices, a 15-minute drive away), but once you’re there, its deserted shoreline, giant lumbering iguanas and fish-flecked shallows are worth the sweat.

16. Chesterman Beach, Vancouver Island, Canada

Another wild beauty, Chesterman’s wide stretch of smooth sand – dotted with huge driftwood logs and fringed by wolf-filled forest – is popular with die-hard surfers and windswept strollers when the tide recedes. It’s overlooked by the fantastic Wickaninnish Inn, an atmospheric place to shelter and keep an eye out for passing sea otters when bloated storm clouds roll in.

17. Anse Source d’Argent, Seychelles

Possibly one of the most photogenic places in the world, Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue is the original Bounty advert beach, cloaked in pure white sand and strewn with hefty granite boulders. It is not, by any stretch, deserted, but visit in the early morning] and you’ll get there before the daytrippers from Mahé and Praslin. For your own pocket of paradise, walk southwards through the shallows past the first set of boulders. The bay opens up for added breathing space.

18. Seagrass Bay, Laucala Island, Fiji

Covered in a sultry tropical jungle and accessible only via guided walking tours or horseback safaris, the private island hideaway of Laucala is an unfathomably beautiful spot, home to some of Fiji’s rarest birds, hordes of marine life and spellbinding beaches. Seagrass Bay is the quietest and prettiest, but if its real adventure you’re after, head slightly further off-shore to get up close to the magnificent sea-life in a submersible.

Hidden Beach Palawan

19. Hidden Beach, Palawan, Philippines

It’s not quite so hidden any more, but this beach still makes its mark as one of the world’s best. Palawan is filled with pristinely beautiful spots, but Hidden Beach – surrounded by imposing limestone cliffs and with startlingly bone-white sand – is an idyllic spot from which to plunge into the turquoise ocean. Stay at El Nido hotels .

20. Ile aux Cerfs, Mauritius

Named for the cerfs , the stags imported from Java for hunting, Ile aux Cerfs in Mauritius has become something of a victim of its own famous beauty, much of it overrun with obtrusive crowds and pesky beach touts. But you need only hike half a mile down the beach and you’ll be rewarded with some incredible island sands that you can keep all to yourself. This place is popular for a reason.

21. Tortuga Bay, Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos

With ghost-white sand, black lava rock and gaggles of marine iguanas, Tortuga Bay is an almost surreal place. It’s two miles out of the main town of Puerto Ayora, and the hike can be hot and sticky, but once there allow yourself to be distracted by sharks patrolling the shallows, apple-red crabs scuttling across the sands and the swoop of blue-footed boobies coming into land, then cool off with a spot of breaststroke among the mangroves.

22. Turquoise Bay, Exmouth, Australia

Launch yourself into the crystalline waters of Turquoise Bay and you’ll be swimming within a few feet of the pristine Ningaloo Reef, a World Heritage-listed site that’s home to the largest congregation of whale sharks on the planet. A 40-mile drive from Exmouth on Australia’s Western coast, it’s a beach of blindingly white sands and impeccable snorkelling – you’ll descend to see rainbow corals, peaceful turtles and more than 500 fish species.

23. Pink Sand Beach, Barbuda

This endlessly photogenic, often empty beach is made from crushed corals that have been ground into fine silk-like sand. Barbuda, Antigua’s sister island, is less crowded than most of the Caribbean islands , meaning you may find you have this eight-mile swathe of sand – which glows candy-floss-pink in the sun – entirely to yourself. There are no public facilities per se, but you’ll find a few beachy cafes scattered alongside the surf for a cooling cocktail.

24. Playa Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

This popular family beach borders the wildlife-filled Manuel Antonio National Park, where three-toed sloths and white-faced capuchin monkeys emerge from the coastal rainforest to the delight of tiny beachgoers. It’s a 30-minute hike from the entrance to the park (keep your eyes peeled for howler monkeys crashing through the canopy), but once there you’ll find soft sands, excellent swimming and honey-hued sunsets. Book a room at Arenas del Mar , spread across 11 leafy acres of a nature reserve.

25. Gantheaume Point, Broome, Western Australia

With a backdrop of saffron-coloured cliffs and lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean , this rugged beach is one of the southern hemisphere’s most photogenic. Cast your eye across the robin-egg-blue waters and you might spot the snouts of rare snubfin dolphins breaking the surface, then turn back to the old lighthouse tower to see ospreys nesting in the framework. When the tide is at its lowest, a smattering of 125-million-year-old dinosaur footprints are unveiled, preserved impeccably in the amber-coloured reef rock.

26. Dolfynstrand, Namibia

Set on the edge of the Namib-Naukluft National Park – the oldest desert on the planet – and a 15-minute drive from seaside hub Walvis Bay. The primeval Dolfynstrand is not a soft-waves-and-sand-between-your-toes sort of place – instead there are eerie shipwrecks strewn on the sand and a stinking, snoozing seal colony up the coast. But given its remote location in one of the world’s most sparsely populated countries, any beachcombers are unlikely to have to jostle for space.

27. Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach, North Carolina

More of an unpolished gem than a screensaver beach, the wind-pummelled Ocracoke on the Outer Banks of North Carolina has been described as one of the USA’s wildest. Once the temporary home of Blackbeard the pirate and his fellow buccaneers, it rocks some seriously big surfing waves in the late summer, while more tranquil waters earlier in the year (plus changing facilities and ample parking) are ideal for salt-water-seeking families.

28. Rauðasandur Beach, Iceland

Glowering below the rocks of Iceland’s western fjords is the moody Rauðasandur Beach, distinguished by its copper-red sands, a result of billions of pulverised scallop shells. Reached by a winding gravel road, this is edged by formidable mountains and dramatic cliffs. But you’re unlikely to see another human here – only a tenth of Iceland’s visitors ever make it as far as the Westfjords.

29. Jibei Island beach, Taiwan

Found in Penghu County, among the remote western islands of Taiwan, Jibei is an almost untouched spot, out of reach of most city-going travellers. Getting here involves taking a boat from the North Sea Tourist Centre to the main part of the island, where there are plenty of watersports, sun umbrellas and wooden cabins for an overnight stay. But it’s the secluded, often deserted sandspit, a 15-minute walk away, that’s truly special. There are no man-made intrusions here – just the murmur of the ocean and a mile of untrodden sand.

30. Uig Sands, Isle of Lewis, Scotland

A busy day at Uig is when two people show up at once. Lying some 20 miles west of Stornoway on Lewis’s surf-battered Atlantic coast, this is a big, dramatic beach watched over by tussocky dunes and grizzled mountains. The beach itself is famous for being the place where a set of Viking chess pieces – dating back to the 12th century and made from the husks of walrus teeth – were unearthed, but it has a lot more going for it than just its history. The surrounding machair flower meadows erupt into bloom in June, and its enormous uninterrupted stretches of sand are a playground for kite-buggy enthusiasts. Check into the 19th-century country house Lews Castle .

31. Benguerra Island, Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Cast away in the protected Bazaruto Archipelago off the coast of southern Mozambique , Benguerra is a place where sandbars shimmer like nacre and leggy flamingoes pick their way delicately through the channels. A short sail by dhow east of the town of Vilanculos, the fine sand here is fringed by a two-mile-long coral reef, while migrating humpbacks and huge whale sharks pass majestically further offshore. The shot-silk waters are also home to the largest dugong population in the western Indian Ocean, and inland you’ll find congregations of crocodiles and all manner of bird species. But best of all, its marine reserve status means there’s only a handful of lodges on the island, so once the day-trippers depart, you’ll have the beach all to yourself. Stat at andBeyond Benguerra Island , a classy but unpretentious beach retreat.

32. Al Mughsail, Salalah, Oman

There’s something Mad Max -esque about Al Mughsail, with its unflinchingly white sand, parched frankincense trees and cinematic blow holes (especially impressive during monsoon season) which erupt every couple of minutes, shaking the earth and spewing out seawater with a deafening sound. Stretching for four unbroken miles and fringed with sheer limestone cliffs, the beach is lapped by gleaming turquoise water which can get a little choppy at times. That said, it’s a wonderful spot from which to watch fishermen pilot traditional dhows just offshore; catch them at dusk for the most dramatic photographs, when they are silhouetted against the treacly Omani sunset.

33. Playa Paraiso, Cayo Largo del Sur, Cuba

It’s likely that Playa Paraiso – stretching across a small island just off Cuba ’s southern coast – still looks much like it did in 1494, when Christopher Columbus sailed to Cayo Largo on his second expedition to the New World. Its sieved-flour sand and crystalline waters remain pristine, while the nearby reefs offer some of the finest diving in the Caribbean. Warm, calm waters make the beach ideal for paddlers and swimmers, while wildlife lovers should keep their eyes peeled for iguanas and giant sea turtles. Shade can be hard to come by though, and naturists head to the east end of the beach – so stay west if you prefer to keep things covered up.

34. Luskentyre, Outer Hebrides

At the end of a winding road on the wind-battered west coast of the Isle of Harris, you’ll find something to make your eyes pop. Luskentyre Beach is a paint splash of brilliant white, surrounded by almost impossibly azure water. On a sunny day, it’s so unerringly blue you may find it hard to believe you are at a beach in Scotland at all. But regardless of its paradoxically tropical feel, it’s at its most beautiful when eel-coloured storm clouds roll in and seas turn flinty, turning this dramatic landscape an eerie monochrome.

The 13 Best Beaches in the United States

Every square inch of beach is striking in its own way

beautiful beaches to visit on vacation

We're dedicating  our July features  to the world’s most beautiful and unique beaches and islands. There’s never been a better way to beat the heat than to head to the sensational coastlines and calm waters that nab a starring role in our dreams. Dive into our features to learn more about  the biggest beach party you might not have heard of , how swimwear impacts climate change , the remote Tahitian village preparing for the world stage , and the best beaches in the United States.

Just how many miles of shoreline does the United States have? About 95,471, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration —and while every square inch is striking in its own way, certain regions of the country are blessed with the most beautiful sands and surf. We’ve zeroed in on the absolute best options from coast to coast, so all you have to do is decide which beachy vibe speaks to your sea-loving soul.

Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida

Domenico Convertini / CC BY-SA 2.0 / Flickr

For a passport-free vacation that oozes Caribbean vibes, head to Destin-Fort Walton Beach. Located along the Florida Panhandle and the Gulf of Mexico, this beach boasts sugar-fine sand made of pure quartz crystal. The result? Twenty-four miles of pristine, soft white powder that doesn’t get hot underfoot but reflects the sunlight through the ocean to create an emerald hue in the crystal-clear waters.

If you like to spend your time in the water instead of on the sand, there are plenty of opportunities for surfing, along with SCUBA and snorkel excursions. County lifeguards watch over the beach but look for daily beach flag updates for the latest on the water currents and recommendations for swimming that day.

Poipu Beach, Kauai

Even when it’s raining on the rest of the island, you can almost always count on a sunny day at Kauai’s Poipu Beach on the South Shore—and this can make the perfect backdrop for the most spectacular rainbows. This crescent-shaped beach is two beaches in one, separated by a tombolo. To the left of the sandbar is a shallow area protected from waves and dotted with lava rock, perfect for young families wishing to play in the water. And to the right, you’ll find the ideal spot for body boarding, snorkeling, and surfing.

You’ll no doubt find a few endangered Hawaiian monk seals napping in the sand (please stay at least 100 feet away from them and avoid flash photography), and during the winter months, you may even see humpback whales in the distance. There are lifeguards on duty and facilities with restrooms and showers. Bring a cooler to enjoy a bite to eat at the picnic tables.

Arcadia Beach, Oregon

Sure, the Oregon Coast is nearly synonymous with Cannon Beach because of its iconic Haystack Rock, but another gorgeous beach lies just 2 miles to the south: Arcadia Beach. “Breathtaking” is the only word that can truly capture the moment you first step onto Arcadia Beach, especially if you’re lucky enough to visit during low tide. On any given day, you’ll find families bicycling on the mile-long beach, children flying kites and dogs catching frisbees, and people playing in the surf or exploring the rock formations and tidepools. In the distance, you’ll still get to see a glimpse of Haystack.

The parking lot is small but often has room, even on sunny summer days—from there, it’s just a short walk down to the beach (you’ll encounter a section of steps). There are picnic tables and facilities. Keep an eye on the ocean levels, as the tides can change quickly.

Emerald Isle Beach, North Carolina

North Carolina’s Crystal Coast offers 85 miles of sandy beaches—while it’s all stunning, make your way to Emerald Isle Beach for its 12 miles of pristine shoreline and views of the Atlantic Ocean. Here, the average temperature hovers around 80 degrees with more than 100 feet of visibility in the crystal-clear waters.

The sand here is a beachcomber’s paradise, littered with seashells of various sizes and colors, while the entire Crystal Coast is known as a wreck diver’s dream due to all of the sunken vessels in the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Be sure to visit The Point at the end of the Isle, as this tailed-off sandbar offers panoramic views of Bogue Sound, Bogue Inlet, and Bear Island, along with spectacular sunsets. Lifeguards are on the beach stand during peak season (April to September, also when paid parking is in effect), and most beach access points have a bathroom.

La Jolla Cove, California

Snorkelers looking for a protected area that’s teeming with marine life—read: bright orange garibaldi, purple sea urchin, sea cucumbers, anemones, and starfish—should put San Diego’s La Jolla Cove high on their bucket list. This small golden crescent beach is tucked between dramatic sandstone bluffs, and it’s one of the most photographed beaches in SoCal due to its beauty (no surprise, considering La Jolla means “the Jewel”). You’re also sure to find many sea lions and seals sunbathing, as these calm waters are protected from ocean swells and currents.

Since the beach is only a 20-minute drive north from downtown San Diego, it gets pretty crowded in the summer; consider visiting in the fall instead (temps will still average 75 degrees). Parking can be difficult, though there is limited street parking if you’re lucky enough to nab a spot.

Ka'anapali Beach, Hawaii

Is chilling on a beach on Maui’s West Shore your idea of the perfect day? Kaanapali is a three-mile stretch of white sands and crystal-clear waters and one of the best beaches in Maui . One of the most famous attractions here is the nightly cliff-diving ceremony, held at sunset off the beach’s most northern cliffs (Puu Kekaa, or Black Rock)—it’s a reenactment of a feat by Maui’s revered King Kahekili, in which he tested his warriors’ loyalty and bravery.

The shallow waters here are great for snorkeling, and it’s common to see whales off the coast during winter. Some beachgoers might not like the crowds or the fact that this beach is near so many resorts and a shopping mall, but this beach remains one of the best in the country.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

As one of the longest beaches in the world—clocking in at 60 miles long—Myrtle Beach spans several communities and two state parks. There’s a wide variety of access points, each with a different atmosphere as you travel along the coast, from busy spots packed with action to the laid-back sections perfect for relaxing, depending on your preference. Refreshing year-round ocean breezes make this beach pleasant even in the heat of the summer.

If you pay to enter either state park (Myrtle Beach State Park or Huntington Beach State Park), you can park for free; otherwise, you’ll find paid parking at meters and in garages or lots. Most segments offer public bathrooms, and there are more than 2,000 restaurants along the coastline to ensure your belly stays full during a long day at the beach.

Coronado Beach, California

Take a little tour across San Diego Bay via the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, and you’ll arrive at Coronado Beach. Here, you’ll find fine golden sand that sparkles with flecks of the mineral mica against the iconic backdrop of the historic Hotel del Coronado. There are several different beaches, including Coronado Central Beach, dog-friendly North Beach, Silver Strand State Beach, Glorietta Bay Beach, and Coronado Shores Beach.

Because the ends of the beach butt up against military property, it’s not uncommon to see the Navy Seals training and fighter jets flying drills in the skies above. Most of the beaches offer restrooms and shower facilities. Look for free parking on Ocean Boulevard and at Ferry Landing Marketplace.

Padre Island National Seashore, Texas

Looking for the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world? Look no further than Padre Island National Seashore in Corpus Christi, Texas. The park protects 66 miles of coastline,  providing a haven for sea turtles and nearly 400 species of birds. Malaquite Beach on the Gulf of Mexico side is the main beach visitors frequent because this is where the visitor center is located (restrooms, showers, and picnic tables are available) and where the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle releases take place from mid-June through August. Bird Island Basin, a smaller beach on the Laguna Madre side, is a popular spot for windsurfers.

No matter which side of the beach you choose, both are pet-friendly. But because this is a protected seashore, amenities are limited, so you’ll need to plan accordingly—the nearest food, gas stations, and hotels are located 12 miles from the entrance. Five campgrounds are open year-round, and spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis (though there are no RV hook-ups in the park).

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Some beaches feel inaccessible, but not Virginia Beach—this 35-mile stretch is located within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the nation’s population. Its popularity is partly due to its three-mile Oceanfront Boardwalk, the perfect place to bike, blade, or stroll while gazing out at the Atlantic shoreline. Of course, with a beach this size, it’s broken up into several beaches, including the quieter Croatan Beach, swimming-friendly Chesapeake Bay Beach, The Oceanfront (where you’ll find the Boardwalk), kid-friendly Grommet Island Park, and secluded Sandbridge Beach. Honestly, there’s something for every beachgoer style within Virginia Beach.

During peak season, lifeguards are posted along the shoreline. Virginia Beach welcomes your four-legged fur babies year-round, with some seasonal restrictions. Parking is plentiful via city garages, lots, and metered street parking (free from Nov. 1 through March 31). Virginia Beach also serves as a flight training zone for the U.S. Navy's East Coast master jet base, so don’t be alarmed if you hear the roar of jet engines as pilots practice maneuvers.

Bowman's Beach Park, Florida

There’s no shortage of shells for visitors to comb through at Bowman’s Beach Park, one of the most stunning and popular beaches on Sanibel Island in Southwest Florida. The beach is about a quarter-mile or so from the parking lot ($5 an hour), and you’ll walk along a footbridge to get to the white sands. The picturesque stretch of beach has calm, serene waves perfect to swim in, plus there’s a playground for children, a sand volleyball court, short hiking trails, and great fishing spots. Bring your kayak if you’re so inclined, as there’s a launch pad.

Bowman’s Beach has everything you need facilities-wise, including restrooms and an outdoor shower, picnic tables and charcoal grills. Many visitors prefer to wear water shoes instead of running around barefoot, because of all the shells.

Coligny Beach, South Carolina

It doesn’t get much more idyllic than Hilton Head Island’s Coligny Beach —the white sands are perfect for frolicking in the surf and soaking up some sunshine. From the end of Pope Avenue, follow the boardwalk down to the pristine sand and straight into the Atlantic. You can walk for miles, dip in the shallow waters, or bike along the hard-packed sand. You may see some tidal pools at low tide, and turtle nesting season runs between May and October.

Coligny Beach is fully equipped with outdoor showers, changing rooms, restrooms, Adirondack chairs, swings, water fountains for kids to run through, and shaded pavilions. There’s even free Wi-Fi. The shopping plaza is packed with dining and shopping options to round out your perfect beach day.

Driftwood Beach, Georgia

There’s a reason scenes from "The Walking Dead" were filmed on Jekyll Island: Driftwood Beach is almost otherworldly, in a hauntingly beautiful, strangely romantic, graveyard-of-dead-trees sort of way. This barrier island has the feel of a secluded, remote getaway. Yet, it’s only about an hour from Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. Driftwood Beach is a particularly secluded spot nestled between cool blue water and majestic live oaks—and it gets its name from the gigantic and gnarly driftwood branches adorning the sands. Don’t forget your camera, as you’ll want to do an impromptu photoshoot in this Instagram-worthy spot.

Public parking is available, and leashed pets are welcome, but visitors looking for restrooms and picnic facilities will need to visit one of the island's other beach parks.

Bar Harbor Maine

Bar Harbor, ME

Bar Harbor, Maine

Much of Maine's Mt. Desert Island is covered by Acadia National Park —home to climbs like Cadillac Mountain and a sophisticated system of carriage roads financed by John D. Rockefeller Jr. But on the island's northeast corner, charming Bar Harbor is a destination in its own right. Skirting Frenchmen Bay, Bar Harbor began drawing visitors as far back as the mid-19th century when some of the Hudson River School, a group of artists that included the likes of Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church, were taken with Maine's Down East landscapes. Still picturesque, Bar Harbor is now a full-fledged tourist town with a bustling main street, whale-watching tours, and of course, easy access to Acadia.

Where to stay in Bar Harbor:

  • For a quirky stay: Queen Anne's Revenge Inn and Suites
  • For romance: West Street Hotel
  • For a private cottage: Beachy three-bedroom rental

Rockport Massachusetts

Rockport, MA

Rockport, Massachusetts

The North Shore, a group of towns in Greater Boston, is a culturally important swath of Massachusetts. The coastal region is known for its excellent seafood, beautiful beaches, and historic landmarks. Many a good film has been filmed here as well, such as Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester-by-the-Sea . There are many towns worth visiting, but Rockport is a favorite among travelers. Forty miles north of Boston, the town has a can't-miss natural gem in Halibut Point State Park, from which visitors can spot Maine in the distance 80 miles away. Rockport is also beloved by art history buffs: it is home to Motif Number 1, a fishing shack with the superlative “the most-often painted building in America.” It was built in 1840, and was a popular subject because it represented New England’s nautical character. (And it didn’t hurt that the light hit it just so.) A replica was built promptly following the historic Blizzard of 1978, which destroyed the original. Gray Malin photographed it for his recent project on Boston .

Where to stay in Rockport:

  • For cozy vibes: Coastal studio loft
  • For a seaside view: Waterfront apartment overlooking a private beach

Oak Bluffs Massachusetts

Oak Bluffs, MA

Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts

Ferries deliver day trippers to this little Martha’s Vineyard town daily and the colorful gingerbread houses for which Oak Bluffs is known are straight out of a storybook. Visitors walk straight off their boats into Ocean Park, a circular green overlooking the sea, encircled by said houses, with a frothy, delicate gazebo sitting in the center. Oak Bluffs has a long history of welcoming Black visitors, and today it is home to the annual African-American Film Festival .

Cape Cod, MA

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

While technically not a beach town itself, this popular peninsula in Massachusetts is home to over a dozen towns worth checking out, and is a vacation hotspot for good reason. While it really heats up during the summer, it's a beautiful destination year-round, and is brimming with history (head to nearby Plymouth to see where the Mayflower docked). Not only does it offer the best New England summer atmosphere, it's also home to exciting activities and small town summer charm. Here, you can spot wildlife, like whales ( Cape Cod is near their migration path) and seals, indulge in delicious seafood, and enjoy miles upon miles of sandy coastline. The Upper Cape is best for families, the Mid-Cape is perfect for escaping the crowds, and the Lower Cape is home to great luxury hotels .

Where to stay in Cape Cod:

  • For New England luxury: Chatham Bars Inn
  • For a historic stay: The Villages at Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club
  • For seaside access: Cozy one-bedroom cottage

The Breakers Newport Rhode Island

Newport, RI

Newport, Rhode Island

Like Oak Bluffs, Newport is a beach town known for its houses, though a very different sort. Ten enormous, historic mansions—once the summer homes of the Vanderbilts, Nevada silver heiresses, and other Westerners of unimaginable wealth—remain standing along the famous cliff walk. Today however, they are museums. The most famous two are The Breakers and Rosecliff. The Newport mansions famously earned the ire of writer Joan Didion, who wrote in her essay The Seacoast of Despair, “To stand in the dining room of ‘The Breakers’ is to imagine fleeing it, pleading migraine.” Today, in lieu of the Great Gatsby -esque lawn parties of yore where swans roamed the grounds, Newport attracts visitors of all stripes for events such as the Newport Folk Festival.

Where to stay in Newport:

  • For Gilded Age fans: Gardiner House Newport
  • For grandeur: The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection

Montauk Lighthouse New York

Montauk, NY

Montauk, New York

The final stop on the eastern tip of Long Island, Montauk is appropriately known as the End. Due to strong winds, rough surf, and ample preserved land, it really does feel like the edge of the world, here. (Although some residents of Long Island’s furthest out town argue that if you really think about it, it’s actually the Beginning.) Montauk feels more remote and low-key than its luxurious, sceney Hamptons counterparts. Every visit to Montauk should include a stop at the Montauk Point Light House, which was commissioned by President George Washington in 1796. It is still operating, and the panoramic views from the top are out of this world.

Where to stay in Montauk:

  • For barefoot luxury: Marram Montauk
  • For a private beach: Gurney's Montauk
  • For St. Tropez vibes: Solé East Resort

Cape May New Jersey

Cape May, NJ

Cape May, New Jersey

The site of pink triple-decker Victorian homes and a lively, festive promenade that exists as a beach town ideal in America's collective imagination, Cape May is the sort of dreamy summer destination one associates with trails of melted ice cream dotting the hot pavement and Fourth of July picnics. National Geographic also labeled Cape May as the World's Best Destination for Birding , writing, “The narrow peninsula at Cape May acts as a bird funnel, bringing in songbirds during their spring and fall migrations. At dawn on a good day, legendary Higbee Beach offers front-row seats to a feathered fashion show… With a little luck, you can see 20 species of warblers, each in its own colorful costume.” Sign us up.

Where to stay in Cape May:

  • For picturesque looks: One-bedroom cottage with a hot tub
  • For classic luxury: The Virginia Hotel

Chincoteague Ponies Virginia

Chincoteague, VA

Chincoteague, Virginia

You won't find bustling boardwalks, sleek hotels, or grids of cars with clunky bike racks trapped in traffic in Chincoteague. This coastal town is all about the wildlife—specifically its wild horses . Visitors flock to the island annually for the Pony Penning that has been held since 1925. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department holds the event, and it consists of a pony swim—in which the animals cross the Assateague Channel—and a pony auction. No one really knows how this population of horses came to be, though there are competing theories. Some say they are descendants of Spanish horses shipwrecked en route to Peru in the 17th century. Others claim they were left long ago by pirates. Still others say they are runaways from mainland farmers. The quaint beauty of Chincoteague includes trails for hiking, beaches, and a red and white lighthouse. For the best pony views, cross over on a bike to the Maryland side of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.

Where to stay in Chincoteague:

  • For beachy decor: Three-bedroom with a balcony
  • For sunset views: Bay-facing cottage on the water

Ocean City, MD

Ocean City, Maryland

There is no place quite like the Chesapeake Bay . Step foot here and breathe in the saltwater air, indulge in delicious seafood, and enjoy the gorgeous beaches. The seaside resort town of Ocean City offers fun for the whole family—stroll down the boardwalk and taste the saltwater taffy to start, then take your pick of activities for all ages: surfing, fishing, and kayaking included. If you're looking for something a little less busy, the nearby small town of Berlin (just a 15-minute drive away) is great for a quick trip or overnight stay to avoid the crowds, but will take you away from the gorgeous shoreline. A little farther away is the historic small town of St. Michaels , worth a visit just to explore the history and see the picturesque neighborhood on the water.

Where to stay in Ocean City:

  • For a view: Condo with bayside access
  • For a midtown stay: Condo near restaurants, bars, and entertainment

Nags Head Outer Banks North Carolina

Nags Head, NC

Nags Head, North Carolina

Nags Head is a beach town on the Outer Banks , a group of barrier islands and spits sandwiched between mainland North Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean. It's known for its sand dunes in Jockey Ridge State Park, which comprise the tallest true sand dune system on the East Coast. Hundreds of shipwrecks nearby—caused by the region's shifting sands and heavily trafficked waters—have given the surrounding waters the moniker “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” and the nearby USS Huron is a popular scuba dive site.

Where to stay in Nags Head and the Outer Banks:

  • For a beachfront retreat: Sanderling Resort
  • For a five-minute walk to the water: Coastal boho home
  • For panoramic ocean views: Triple-tiered vacation home

Pawley's Island South Carolina

Pawley's Island, SC

Pawleys Island, South Carolina

Pawleys Island is so small that its year-round population hovers around 100 people. It was first settled in the 1500s, making it one of the oldest beach towns in the US. With that amount of history, there is, of course, a ghost story to go with it: There have been sightings of the Gray Man, a ghost whose appearance is said to warn of hurricanes as he paces up and down the beach, dating to a 19th-century storm. Summer options on Pawleys Island that are not at all spooky—besides flopping around on the beach—include golf, fishing, walking sculpture-filled gardens, and feasting on Lowcountry cuisine like She Crab soup.

Where to stay in Pawleys Island:

  • For a beachy condo: Two-bedroom townhouse
  • For a breathtaking view: Marshfront property near the beach

Image may contain City Water Waterfront Architecture Building Cityscape Urban Nature Outdoors Scenery and Beach

Myrtle Beach, SC

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

While it's not too far from the aforementioned Pawleys Island, Myrtle Beach will feel worlds away from the slow, small-town atmosphere of the other quaint town. This popular summer destination boasts bigger crowds than its neighbor, and has a wide assortment of entertainment, dining, nightlife, and activities available. Aside from the deliciously warm weather and miles of beaches to traverse, Myrtle Beach is also home to a great many golf courses, amusement parks, water parks, and an iconic boardwalk with a massive 187-foot-tall Ferris Wheel.

Where to stay in Myrtle Beach:

  • For golf lovers: Marina Inn at Grande Dunes
  • For seclusion: Island Vista Resort

Tybee Island, GA

Tybee Island, Georgia

Just a short drive from Savannah , Georgia, this coastal community is in the perfect spot for a day trip . Even during the summer, some parts of it manage to maintain that small-town vibe and don't get unbearably crowded, boasting an assortment of adorable ice cream and coffee shops, long stretches of sandy beaches, and great waterfront access. There's a little something for everyone from families to couples— South Beach is better for those who want a little excitement in their atmosphere, whereas North Beach is a bit more quiet and contained. I've found it particularly great for families (having traveled here with a multigenerational group ages 1-68), and recommend the kitschy Original Crab Shack for a memorable meal.

Where to stay in Tybee Island:

  • For a private pool and hot tub: Three-bedroom bungalow
  • For couples: Historic cottage with complimentary golf cart, bikes, and kayaks

Siesta Key Florida

Siesta Key, FL

Siesta Key, Florida

While we love the beach towns listed above, the only part of the East Coast that has a true tropical climate is the lower half of Florida. Naturally, the beaches in this area are very beautiful. We want to laud Siesta Key in particular for its fine sand, which comes from the Appalachian Mountains and is made up almost entirely of cool and reflective quartz, its waterfront dining and drinking, and its excellence for water sports like parasailing. The three beaches to visit on Siesta Key are Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach, and Turtle Beach.

Where to stay in Siesta Key:

  • For a lush condo: Beachfront stay on Siesta Beach
  • For a private pool: Tropical three-bedroom home

Best beaches in the USA? Here's our top 12 for 2024

Jan 17, 2024 • 9 min read

beautiful beaches to visit on vacation

The sunsets at El Matador Beach in Malibu are a thing of beauty © Lebid Volodymyr / Shutterstock

From southeast Florida to northwest Washington to Hawaii, Lonely Planet editors have picked the top 12 beaches in the USA.

Caves, coves and arches; mystical fog and sprawling coastlines; urban, sprawling and surfing beaches; unique formations, coastlines, colors and perspectives…the 100 shorelines featured in Lonely Planet’s Best Beaches – available in late February 2024 – cover the world.

Whether you’re looking for tips for the next trip or simply desire some beach-chair travel, we’re delighted to share the beaches in the USA that made the cut.

Read on to discover Lonely Planet’s top 12 beaches in the US.

Man walking on Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island, Georgia, USA, with weathered trees at sunrise.

1. Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island, Georgia

The gnarled oaks littering the golden sands of Jekyll Island off the coast of Georgia are haunting. They're even a bit eerie with their spider-like branches draped across the shore. But the trees pull you in for a closer look, whispering of mysteries from centuries past. And maybe even tales of zombies – The Walking Dead filmed scenes for its 10th season here.

But with kids exploring tide pools and climbing onto sun-bleached tree trunks, the scene is far from morbid. Plus there’s a steady stream of brides and grooms smiling for wedding shots among the branches at sunset, making the most of the technicolor backdrop.

Once part of a maritime forest, the trees fell as the beach eroded and their roots were exposed to sun and salt. Some trees may be more than 500 years old while others have collapsed more recently due to storms and the relentless encroachment of the Atlantic.

2. Grayton Beach, Grayton Beach State Park, Florida

The sugar-white sands of Grayton Beach billow like delicate frosting, their ephemeral beauty ever-shifting thanks to winds and waves along the Florida panhandle. They’re a striking contrast to the blue-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico, which gently lap the shore.

But this one-mile (1.6km) strip of pristine sand, part of Grayton Beach State Park , is more than just a pretty face. The beach’s dunes protect three coastal dune lakes, which are a rare natural phenomenon found in only four countries around the world. A 4.5-mile (7.2km) multiuse trail winds through the woods and along the 100-acre (40-hectare) Western Lake, the largest of the park’s coastal dune lakes. Its dazzling blue waters are open for kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding.

Illuminated hotels on Ocean Drive at South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida, USA

3. South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida

A sparkling confection of sunshine, style and beautiful people, South Beach embodies the good life. Just east of downtown Miami , SoBe dazzles like a kaleidoscope paused.

Aquamarine waters lap luxurious white sands while the tidy greenery of Lummus Park and the Promenade unfurls just west. Candy-bright lifeguard towers bring whimsy to the beach, doubling as calling cards for the many colorful facades in the Miami Art Deco District. Built in the 1930s, art deco hotels along Ocean Dr are showpieces of geometry, color and function. Caribbean flourishes and soaring palm trees add more aesthetic oomph while neon and nightclubs bring late-night sizzle.

Skateboarders and onlookers at Venice Beach, Los Angeles, California, USA

4. Venice Beach, Los Angeles, California

Cheap sunglasses are for sale in every direction on the Venice Beach Boardwalk, a 2-mile (3.2km) strip of creativity hugged by weed dispensaries, t-shirt shops and French-fry joints in southern Los Angeles – and that’s just the view on the inland side.

On the oceanside, palm trees frame the sandy beach and the Pacific, but views are interrupted by weightlifters pumping iron at Muscle Beach , basketball players shooting hoops on busy courts and skateboarders gliding skyward at the shiny skateboard park – take a seat and watch the action. Jugglers, gymnasts and artists all vie for attention – and a few bucks – along the way.

Sunset view of people having fun on El Matador Beach, Malibu, California, USA

5. El Matador State Beach, Malibu, California

A “pocked beach” in western Malibu , El Matador may be tiny but it packs an oversized visual punch. One of three small beaches comprising Robert H Meyer Memorial State Beach – the other two are El Pescador and La Piedra – El Matador hugs the base of craggy bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean beside Hwy 1 .

A dirt path drops down the rugged cliffside to a set of stairs that descend to the soft sands of the beach, where the visual feast really begins. A cluster of rocks and sea stacks extend from the cliffs across the cove and into the sea. The largest formations hide arches and caves, which are prime candidates for exploring and photography. Tide pools filled with sea life also demand up-close inspection. As the sun sets, a golden glow illuminates the rocks, casting shadows and revealing treasures not previously seen. On a quiet afternoon the effect borders on the sublime.

6. Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur, California

For several weeks in late December, the setting sun illuminates Keyhole Arch and a sliver of coastline with a luminous golden light. Whether a message from the gods, a portal to another world or a simple but unparalleled work of nature along the rugged Big Sur coast in California , it’s a spectacular sight during the weeks surrounding the winter solstice. And spectacular becomes sublime when a wave crashes within the arch, its spray aglow with the ethereal light.

After rainstorms, the crescent-shaped beach may turn purple in spots due to the manganese garnet washed down from the coastline’s crumbly bluffs. Due to dangerous surf, Pfeiffer Beach isn’t recommended for swimming, and it can get windy – but walking, beachcombing and sunsets are superb.

A horseback riding group by Haystack Rock on Cannon Beach, Oregon, USA

7. Cannon Beach, Oregon

Haystack Rock is a mood. A volcanic remnant formed by 17 million years of uplift and erosion, it rises 235ft (72m) above Cannon Beach. A basalt monolith, it would have been familiar to the Clatsop and Chinook communities as well as the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which wintered near here in 1805 and 1806. Today Haystack Rock and the beach are popular destinations for beachgoers seeking wildlife and amazing sunset views.

Within the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge on the north Oregon coast , Haystack Rock is a haven for tufted puffins, seals and sea lions. At low tide, beachcombers can walk to its base and explore its tide pools, home to sea stars and anemones. Gray whales and humpback whales migrate along the coast in winter and again in spring. Held in June, the Cannon Beach Sandcastle Competition is truly ephemeral – all the entries are washed away by high tide after existing for a mere five hours.

The waters of Lake Tahoe at Sand Harbor, Nevada, USA

8. Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe, Nevada

On a spring day, when crowds are light and snow still drapes the Sierra Nevada mountains, Sand Harbor and its lakefront boulders evoke a land that time forgot. Crystal clear blue waters. Ancient white sands. Jefferson pines that soar overhead. There’s an ageless and transportive tranquility here – at least until summer, when beach umbrellas and stand-up paddleboards disrupt the spell as the crowds roll in.

Lake Tahoe , which straddles the California– Nevada state line, is the largest alpine lake in the country and the second-deepest. The water is so clear that you can sometimes see objects 70ft (21m) below the surface. You can appreciate that clarity at Sand Harbor, especially if you rent a kayak and paddle its small bay.

A woman wacthes the wild horses of Assateague Island National Seashore, Virginia, USA

9. Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland and Virginia

With wild horses galloping across its windswept beaches, Assateague Island National Seashore exudes a surprisingly feral vibe, a rarity along the highly developed shores of the Mid-Atlantic. Thick maritime forests and rugged dunes round out the dramatic scene. A barrier island, Assateague hugs the coast of Maryland and Virginia on the Eastern Shore, a three-hour drive from Washington, DC . With camping permitted on the beach, it’s easy for city dwellers to dig into its untamed splendor – and wake up to gorgeous sunrises.

The park’s 37-mile (59km) beachfront is divided by the Maryland–Virginia state line. Low-key adventuring is a hallmark of the Maryland side, with hiking on nature trails, kayaking in bayside marshes and 4 miles (6.4km) of road cycling on Bayberry Dr. At Maryland’s Assateague State Park , which is tucked inside the national seashore, there is a bathhouse and, in summer, lifeguards. Stay at least 40ft (12m) away from the horses – they’re more bad-tempered than polite.

Palm trees and lush forest backs the white-sand beach of Hanalei Bay in Kaua‘i, Hawaii, USA

10. Hanalei Bay, Kaua‘i, Hawaii

The last place on Earth, or a doorstep to the heavens? The difference hardly matters when admiring Kauaʻi ’s Hanalei Bay , a 2-mile (3.2km) crescent of golden sand carved from the northern edge of the northernmost island in the Hawaiian archipelago. Just west of Black Pot Beach Park , the photogenic Hanalei Pier juts into the soft blue waters of the bay. Framed by rumpled green mountains and blue skies brushed with clouds, the 300ft-long (91m) pier is the only thing keeping this North Shore masterpiece tethered to reality.

The beach is divided into four named sections along the coast. Kayakers and novice surfers flock to the area around the pier, where the surf is typically the calmest. Surf lessons are offered just west. Big swells draw experienced surfers to Waiʻoli (Pine Trees) Beach Park near the middle of the beach in winter. Swimming conditions vary by location and season but are typically best in summer. Sunbathing and snorkeling are also popular.

A wide-angle shot of Oneloa Beach/Big Beach, Maui, Hawaii

11. Oneloa Beach/Big Beach, Maui, Hawaii

There’s something pleasingly untamed about Oneloa Beach , a broad strip of golden sand in the far southern reaches of Maui . Yes, it’s part of Makena State Park , where lifeguards scan the Pacific from canary-bright lifeguard stands. But the setting remains wild. A tangle of tropical greenery presses in on the sandy path that leads to the near mile-long (1.6km) beach – oneloa means “long sand” in Hawaiian – and the Pacific pounds the shore with waves that are an otherworldly shade of blue.

Beachgoers should be aware that shorebreaks (steep waves that break near the shore) can be too brutal for swimming. But from atop the lava-rock promontory at Oneloa’s south end, views of the beach – which is flanked by the lush slopes of Haleakalā – are magnificent.

Tourists visit Ruby Beach in Olympic National Park, Washington State, USA

12. Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park, Washington

It looks like a giant emptied his pockets on the shores of Ruby Beach in Olympic National Park . Tree trunks are strewn like matchsticks. Sea stacks cluster like crumbled chocolates. And a colorful assortment of agates, garnets and sea glass add a touch of glitter to the captivating mess.

The sea stacks, reachable at low tide, are the public face of coastal erosion here. Once part of the mainland, they formed after a centuries-long onslaught by ocean waves, which also carved out their caves and arches. Flanked by forested sandstone cliffs, Ruby Beach is a wonderland for children, with tide pools hiding anemones, sea urchins, purple starfish and skittering crabs. The shore and its polished rocks – the agates give the beach its ruby coloring – also hold treasures for sharp-eyed rockhounds and seashell hunters.

The 14 Best Beaches on the East Coast

beautiful beaches to visit on vacation

You'd be insulted—and argue otherwise—if someone claimed every Southern state is exactly alike, right? Well, we're here to mount a similar defense of the East Coast. The region tends to get lumped together, as if 2,000 miles of Atlantic coastline only contains a single landscape or beachgoing culture. But the truth is, the eastern seaboard is as varied as the people that make it up. Which means you're only cheating yourself if you declare, "Seen one beach, seen 'em all." From Maine to Florida, we've put a pin in the can't-miss stretches of East Coast shoreline. With everything from sea turtles to powdery sand to dunes that'll leave you breathless, these 14 spots prove that every beach has its own identity.

Hammonasset Beach State Park

Madison, Connecticut

As the largest shoreline park in Connecticut, this stunning locale has attracted visitors since its official opening in 1920—and we understand its appeal: With everything from swimming and beach-strolling to boating, biking, kayaking, camping, and fishing, Hammonasset eliminates any possibility of beachfront boredom. There's even an auditory experience to enjoy: When the tide comes in at Meigs Point, the "singing beach," clinking shells create a seaside chorus.

1288 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT 06443, ct.gov

Cape Henlopen State Park

Lewes, Delaware

With its gentle dunes and unbeatable views of historic lighthouses, this six-mile stretch of shoreline is a peaceful escape from the bustle of other Delaware beaches. Borrow a free bike for two hours and traverse the park's varied landscape (which ranges from maritime forest to sandy shores), or head to the overlook and see if you spot any dolphins or seals.

15099 Cape Henlopen Drive, Lewes, DE 19958, destateparks.com

Canaveral National Seashore

New Smyrna Beach, Florida

At 24 miles long, this barrier island is the longest undeveloped stretch on the entire east coast of Florida. Nestled between the charming towns of New Smyrna Beach and Titusville, the sands of Canaveral National Seashore are a sanctuary not just for beachgoers, but for wildlife, including several endangered species. The park is specifically known as a refuge for sea turtles, which nest on its tawny shoreline.

7611 S. Atlantic Avenue, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169, nps.gov

Tybee Island

Tybee Island, Georgia

A barrier island with five miles of powdery sands and five separate beaches, Tybee Island is considered "Savannah's Beach" because of its easy access to the thriving downtown just 20 minutes away. The wide beaches are great for fat-tire cruising or strolling, while warm waters make for fantastic swimming nearly year-round.

802 1st Street, Tybee Island, GA 31328, visittybee.com

Ogunquit Beach

Ogunquit, Maine

Although Maine is typically remembered for its rocky shores, you'll find stellar white beaches at its southern end, with Ogunquit—the native Algonquin tribe's word for "beautiful place by the sea"—as the crown jewel. The former home of an artist's colony, this New England beach extends for three gorgeous miles, with broad, pale sands. Insiders know that the middle stretch is the quietest place to sunbathe.

124 Beach Street, Ogunquit, ME 03907, ogunquit.org

South Ocean Beach

Berlin, Maryland

Wild, windy, and where horses roam free, Assateague Island National Seashore has that delightful middle-of-nowhere feel, with South Ocean Beach as its "civilized" stretch. The park has 12 miles of drivable shoreline (with a proper OSV permit) and offers superb crabbing, clamming, surf fishing, and wave riding in the steady Atlantic swell.

Bayberry Drive, Berlin, MD 21811, nps.gov

Coast Guard Beach

Eastham, Massachusetts

Hemmed in by dunes and open to the Atlantic (but with mostly gentle waves), this beach is the beginning of a 20-plus-mile-long run of unbroken coastline that Henry David Thoreau called "The Great Beach." Though the poet is known for walking what's now the Cape Cod National Seashore , this portion is also a prime spot for swimming (and is close to the quaint village of Eastham). History lovers will enjoy lazing where the Mayflower made landfall in 1620.

Little Creek Parking Lot, Doane Road, Eastham, MA, nps.gov

Cape May, New Jersey

With 2.5 miles of beaches facing the Atlantic on one side and the Delaware Bay on the other, Cape May has sandy charm in spades. (Did we mention the town is packed with intricate Victorian homes?) One among several terrific city beaches here, The Cove—with its gentle slope and steady swell—is chief among the treasures and beloved by families and surfers alike.

Beach Avenue, Cape May, NJ 08204, capemay.com

Hampton Beach

Hampton, New Hampshire

Who says New Hampshire doesn't have beach bonafides? Although its shore is the shortest of any coastal state—only 13 miles long—you won't want to bypass Hampton Beach. Think wide beaches, sweeping Atlantic views, and family-friendly amusements along the boardwalk. It's laid-back and known for being clean.

160 Ocean Boulevard, Hampton, NH 03842, nhstateparks.org

East Hampton, New York

Even celebrities can't resist hitting this gorgeous, broad beach in the Hamptons. And who can blame them? One of five beaches owned by the Village of East Hampton, Main Beach is impeccably clean (in and out of the water!) and has luxuriously soft sands.

104 Ocean Avenue, East Hampton, NY 11937, easthamptonvillage.org

Ocracoke Beach

Ocracoke, North Carolina

North Carolina is blessed with a bounty of extraordinary beaches, so for Ocracoke Beach to earn a spot on this list, it has to possess some serious Outer Banks magic. It's hard to beat these vacation-spot credentials: barrier-island privacy, 16 miles of undeveloped dunes and wild sands, off-road vehicle access, and top-notch seashell hunting.

Highway 12, Ocracoke, NC 27960, visitocracokenc.com

Crescent Beach

Block Island, Rhode Island

You'll have to hop a ferry to reach Block Island, the teardrop-shaped isle 12 miles south of the Rhode Island coast, but it's worth the journey. Here on this stunning slice of land, known by Native Americans as "Little God's Island," lies Crescent Beach. This 2.5-mile, white-sand stretch offers family-friendly amenities (hello, cabanas!) and glorious surf. And it's just a short walk from the ferry.

Corn Neck Road, Block Island, RI 02807, visitrhodeisland.com

Folly Beach

Folly Beach, South Carolina

A short drive from Charleston, Folly Beach is a barrier island both near to city life and millions of miles away. Funky, free-spirited, and full of surfers, sun-seekers, and quirky souls, this is off-the-beaten-path beach life in all its glory. Start your adventure at Center Beach and the Folly Pier, then head to Folly Beach County Park , at the island's west end, for a true escape. Peek at the pelican rookery while you're there.

101 E. Arctic Avenue, Folly Beach, SC 29439, follybeach.com

Sandbridge Beach

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Although officially a part of the Virginia Beach metro area, you won't catch any boardwalk-and-funnel-cake vibes at this secluded escape. Try five miles of pristine dunes and sea oats (a tall grass known for its spiky plumes) blowing in the wind. Situated alongside a serene community of beach houses and small restaurants, this spot is nothing short of an East Coast paradise.

  • Where to see wildlife on South Padre Island: Sea Turtle, Inc ., South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center , and Laguna Madre Nature Trail .

While this island in Texas is a popular spring break destination, there are plenty of reasons to visit South Padre Island in winter , including opportunities for eating delicious food, holiday celebrations, and winter bird migration.

2 Galveston Island, Texas

The average cost of a one-week trip: $1,282.

Galveston Island is within the city limits of the City of Galveston and is similar to Honolulu, which offers many free things to do but it is still expensive to explore the islands. Both destinations boast beaches, museums, historical sites, and a vibrant nightlife scene. They are also both family-friendly and tourists will find amazing things to do with their kids.

Overall, there is more to explore in Honolulu, but since there are plenty of similarities between the two islands, Galveston makes a perfect alternative for budget tourists. It costs $183 per day, on average, to visit Galveston, and $284 per day to vacation in Honolulu .

  • The best beaches in Galveston: Stewart Beach, East Beach, and Galveston Island State Park Beach.

1 channel islands national park, california, the average cost of a one-week trip: $589.

A portion of the Southern California Bight in the Pacific Ocean, Channel Islands National Park, which is California's most exotic off-shore destination , has always been compared to Hawaii. Just like The Aloha State, the national park is a tropical paradise with plenty of white beaches that offer multiple fun activities, including swimming, whale watching, kayaking, and more.

Moreover, the lushness of many of the islands' grassy hills makes them perfect dupes for Hawaii. The islands, which include Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa Rosa, and San Miguel, also come with breathtaking coastal views, and incredible wildlife, and are sometimes referred to as "the Galápagos of North America." Despite the park's location near Los Angeles, it is one of the most underrated national parks in California.

The park's similarities to Hawaii make it a great alternative and a perfect option for budget travelers who can't afford a one-week trip to the Aloha State. The park entry is free, so one needs to only budget for transport, food, and accommodation. A ferry/boat is the most affordable way of getting to the islands. Most of these boats depart from Ventura, taking about one hour 53 minutes, and cost $32 . So, a round-trip costs $64. Primitive camping costs $15 per night at the park , so a seven-day vacation would be $105 for camping.

For food, there are many options for those cruising with Island Parkers . One can order online from Harbor Cové Cafe in Ventura Harbor. A lunch box costs around $20. One can spend around $60 per day on meals when in Channel Islands National Park. So, in total, a one-week trip might cost about $589.

Those who want to live near the park can only do so on Santa Catalina Island, either Avalon or Two Harbors. Here is what living in Avalon is like:

  • The best beaches in Channel Islands National Park: Shell Beach, St. Helier Beach, and St. Brelade's Bay Beach.

If you are visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for its beautiful trails, the Channel Islands offers plenty of trails that are suitable for hikers of all levels. Potato Harbor , Cavern Point Loop , and Smugglers Cove are some of the best trails one can explore in the park.

The world’s best 50 beaches in 2024 – and just one in the UK makes the list

  • Ryan Gray , Travel Reporter
  • Published : 11:29 ET, Apr 29 2024
  • Updated : 6:54 ET, May 1 2024
  • Published : Invalid Date,

THE best 50 beaches in the world have been revealed, with beautiful stretches of sand and clear blue waters.

Just one in the UK made the list - with the top spot going to a very exotic island.

The UK's Kynance Cove just made the list - coming in at 48th place

Revealed by the The World’s 50 Best Beaches, and presented by Banana Boat, the annual study uses both their "own experiences and insights" as well as "the collective expertise of countless travel professionals".

Along with thousands of votes from experts, the study looks at eight different criteria - uniqueness, local wildness, how untouched it is, the "soundtrack of nature," ease of access, water calmness, lack of crowds and how "frequently idyllic" it is.

And the top spot went to Trunk Bay in the US Virgin Islands .

Calling it the "quintessential Caribbean paradise," the soft sand and clear waters were raved about, as well as calm waters due to it's sheltered landscape.

It is named after the Leatherback turtle (known locally as "trunks"), where smaller turtles are known to nest in the summer months.

If you fancy visiting, it comes with a cost - flights from the UK to the US Virgin Islands start from £801 with Virgin Atlantic.

Thankfully, one in England also made the top 50.

The UK's entrant came in 48th place, with Cornwall 's Kynance Cove taking the spot.

The study said: "Famed for its rugged beauty and serpentine rock formations, this stunning cove in Cornwall features a striking landscape with water a shade of turquoise usually seen in the Caribbean.

"The combination of turquoise waters and white sand makes it a remarkable standout, especially given its more northern location."

It's not the only list to praise the beach, with a previous study finding that Kynance Cove is even the warmest UK beach in the winter, with an average temperature of 11.5C.

Kynance is more than just a beach, however, with the National Trust site also home to plenty of seaside walking routes that visitors love trekking along.

Additionally, it's home to a natural sea pool, hidden below the rugged cliffs, known as the Mermaid Pool.

The beach was also included in Lonely Planet's top 100 beaches in the world, published earlier this year.

It was joined by Rhossili Bay in Wales , Durdle Door in Dorset and West Beach, Scotland.

However, none of those beaches joined it in the new top 50 list.

Other high entries slightly closer to home than the top spot included Cala Mariolu in Italy (2nd), Voutoumi Beach in Greece (5th) and Calo Des Moro in Spain (11th).

The highest ranking of those, Cala Mariolu, is found in Sardinia , where a limit on the number of tourists allowed to visit was introduced in 2022.

Only 700 people per day are permitted to visit the beach, each having to book in advance using an app.

It was described by the study as having "striking beauty everywhere you turn" as well as a "sense of privacy and adventure" .

Elsewhere, fifth place Voutoumi beach is found on Antipaxos , one of Greece's smallest islands.

Its shallow waters make it perfect for paddling with families, with the study labelling it "quiet and pristine compared to more accessible Greek beaches".

Calo des Moro in Majorca , Spain is highly rated for similar reasons, with tourists enjoying its calm waters, tucked away in secluded cove.

It does get busy during the summer, but either side of those months, while it's still warm, it's much quieter.

Trusted by Millions of Readers

Doesn’t it sound idyllic to visit or retire to a beautiful island? The beaches, the views, the quiet. All of it sounds so relaxing, until you see how much homes on these islands cost .

But just because a home is on an island in the U.S., does that make it unaffordable? Not necessarily. Here’s a look at the average home prices on eight U.S. islands. See whether you can afford to snatch up a vacation home in one of these places .

Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

Average home value: $1,518,032

Welcome to Martha’s Vineyard, a Massachusetts island where the average home costs well over $1 million. For that price, however, you’ll be treated to fantastic beaches, boutique hotels, delicious wine and a rich food scene.

You can also check out the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society, which plays art house movies and hosts various film festivals. If you’re a sailor, you’ll have to take part in the island’s famous Round the Island Race and put your skills to the test.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Average home value: $412,031

For a reprieve from million-dollar home prices, check out Mackinac Island in Michigan. Going to Mackinac feels like going back in time. Cars aren’t allowed on the island, so you’ll have to get around with old-fashioned ways. You’ll see horse-drawn carriages, and you’ll be able to taste delicious homemade fudge in sweetshops.

Tourists can be seen kayaking in the water and staying at quaint bed-and-breakfast inns. For a slower pace at a lower price, this is the place to go.

Mount Desert Island, Maine

Average home value: $883,131

Mount Desert Island is home to Acadia National Park, which offers beaches, ponds and picturesque hiking trails. Some famous residents include Susan Sarandon and Martha Stewart.

Hot tip: When talking about Mount Desert Island, you pronounce “desert” like you’d pronounce “dessert.”

Maui, Hawaii

Average home value: $1,049,901

You can’t have a conversation about U.S. islands without talking about Hawaii. Maui offers the beauty of Haleakalā National Park (where you could camp inside of a crater if you wanted), renown beaches and copious snorkeling opportunities.

For being in one of the most expensive states to live in the U.S., Maui is surprisingly less expensive than a lot of other destinations on this list. Use that logic when you buy a vacation home in Maui for over $1 million.

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Average home value: $2,693,271

Yes, over $2 million for a home is pretty expensive, but Nantucket offers a lot for residents and visitors. Buying a home on Nantucket would give you access to some pristine beaches, the Whaling Museum, lighthouses a plenty and tons of shops.

Key West, Florida

Average home value: $1,102,802

For just over $1 million, you can have a home in the Florida Keys. Key West offers tons of things to do for you and those who visit your beautiful beach home.

You can stop in at one of the city’s many museums, visit the southernmost point of the contiguous United States, Jet Ski, kayak or just have a perfect picnic on the shore.

Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Average home value: $1,932,525

The average price of a home on Kiawah Island edges dangerously close to $2 million. Golfers absolutely love this oasis for its famous courses.

There are also plenty of resorts for your family to come visit you where they’ll be treated like true VIPs. Visitors rave about the old-time feeling on the island and the great food you can pick up at local markets.

Dauphin Island, Alabama

Average home value: $493,446

Dauphin Island is a much cheaper place to live than a lot of other places on this list. On the island, you can visit the Alabama Aquarium, which features animals native to Alabama. Plus, you can visit multiple beaches and sunbathe the day away.

The Best Beaches in Mexico — From Quiet Paradises to Surfing and Party Hot Spots

The best beaches in Mexico run the spectrum from all-inclusive havens to pristine, wild paradises.

beautiful beaches to visit on vacation

Simon Dannhauer / Getty Images

Mexico is so much more than just sun and sand. Its food, art, culture, and design are famous, but there's no denying that the country is also home to some of the most renowned beach getaway destinations in the world.

"Mexico has over 7,000 miles of coastline, encompassing the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Cortez, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea, which provides a diverse range of coastal landscapes and beach destinations," Zachary Rabinor , a T+L  A-List advisor  and the CEO of  Journey Mexico , told Travel + Leisure .

The best beaches in Mexico are not only some of the most beautiful in the world, but they also offer an impressive variety — there's truly something for everyone. Whether you're looking for the ultimate escape with white sand and crystalline water, an adrenaline-pumping surf spot, a golden-hued coastline with more sea turtles than people, or a barefoot party destination, Mexico has a beach to match your mood. "Whether travelers seek relaxation, water sports, world-class scuba, snorkeling, surfing, deep sea or flat water fishing, beach parties, or untouched landscapes – you name it - Mexico has it all," said Rabinor. "There is a beach paradise to suit every preference."

There are countless sandy stretches along the country's 6,910-mile coastline, so where should you start? Here's our list of Mexico's best beaches to help you plan your next getaway.

Playa del Amor, Baja California Sur

Matt Gush / Getty Images

Cabo San Lucas' El Arco rock formation is one of Mexico's most iconic backdrops. It also happens to sit near one of the best beaches in Mexico, Playa del Amor, a.k.a. Lover's Beach.

This famous stretch of golden sand lies on a small peninsula southeast of Cabo's downtown and is easily reached by water taxi from the marina. While the waves here are very gentle — a rarity in Los Cabos — and the sand is sun-baked, keep in mind that you should only swim on this side of the peninsula. (The opposite side, often referred to as "Divorce Beach," is known for its choppy, rough surf and strong undercurrent. Rabinor noted that this side is "too wild for swimming.")

"It´s worth mentioning that Playa del Amor changes in size throughout the year due to tides and was reduced considerably following Hurricane Odile, but it´s the location and contrasts that make this spot so special," said Rabinor.

Playa Sisal, Yucatán

Susan Vineyard / Getty Images

With its famous mix of resorts, nightlife, and historical sites, the state of Quintana Roo has long drawn the lion's share of visitors to Mexico. For travelers in search of something more understated, however, the neighboring state of Yucatán offers a worthwhile alternative. While less-visited than Cancún or Riviera Maya, Yucatán has spectacular beaches with powder-soft sands and calm waters. Just an hour's drive northwest from the state capital, Mérida, Playa Sisal has bone-white sand, crystal clear water, and a quiet charm all its own — don't expect more than a few beachside palapas and quaint al fresco seafood restaurants.

Playa Carrizalillo, Oaxaca

Mark Guitard / Getty Images

While everyone is soaking up the rays and downing margaritas on Playa Zicatela, you'll want to make your way over to Puerto Escondido's smaller, more secluded beach, Playa Carrizalillo. A longtime favorite for locals, it sits at the bottom of more than 160 steps. Those who make the trip down are rewarded with turquoise-colored water and a crescent-shaped beach ringed by swaying palm trees.

This is also a beach that is beloved by beginner surfers, and locals are always on hand to book a quick lesson. Beyond that, you'll find a row of laid-back, barefoot casual beach shacks and snack bars. Pro tip: The one on the far right has delectable coconut shrimp. Don't skip the ice cream man, either — he pushes his cart along the beach each afternoon.

Playa Delfines, Quintana Roo

Cancún's Playa Delfines is beloved by locals and visitors alike for its wide stretch of powdery sand, electric blue water, and relatively quiet atmosphere. It's the only beach in the Hotel Zone without a high-rise hotel looming over it and also happens to be one of the rare surfing spots along Mexico's Caribbean coast. The vibe here is just different—it truly feels like a local beach in one of the most touristed spots in the world.

"There are not many public beaches with facilities along Cancun’s hotel zone, but this is one of them and thus so, mostly visited by locals," said Rabinor. "If you’re not staying in an oceanfront hotel in Cancun, Playa Delfines is where you’ll want to go to enjoy those iconic blue waters and white sands."

Playa Mayto, Jalisco

One of the longest and most remote beaches in Mexico, this secluded stretch is a roughly two-hour drive south from Puerto Vallarta, on the coast of Cabo Corrientes. To reach the beach, travelers must brave a dusty road that branches off from federal highway 200 in the small town of El Tuito.

Once you get there, you'll find nearly seven miles of relatively untouched sand, a handful of hotels and restaurants within walking distance of the beach, and most notably, one of Jalisco's largest sea turtle protection camps , which has been leading research and conservation projects in the area since 2005. Reach out through the camp's Facebook page to see whether you can volunteer during your trip or, if you're staying nearby, check with your hotel to see whether there are opportunities to visit the turtle camp for the day.

Playa Troncones, Guerrero

Walter Bibikow / Getty Images

In the past, visitors to Guerrero flocked to the glitzy and glamorous beaches of Acapulco, but lately the state's lower-profile destinations have been attracting more attention from travelers. Playa Troncones, for instance, is about as low profile as it gets, usually occupied by surfers looking to ride some of the best waves off the southern Pacific coast. But this quiet town is home to one of the best beaches in Mexico. Visitors here are rewarded with a three-mile stretch of pristine golden sand, cobalt-colored waves, and that laid-back lifestyle that attracted them to Mexico in the first place.

Playa Balandra, Baja California Sur

About a half-hour drive north of La Paz — a town on the Sea of Cortez that should also be on your radar — Playa Balandra is simply jaw-dropping. Far off the tourist trail, this postcard-perfect crescent of sand overlooks a bay masquerading as a lagoon, with calm, turquoise waters gently lapping against the sugary shores. If you want to explore marine life, this is the destination for you. The Sea of Cortez is one of the most magnificent snorkeling spots in the world, and Playa Balandra is the perfect place to get up close and personal with some amazing creatures.

Puerto Progreso, Yucatán

Mike Diaz / Getty Images

While checking out the historic city of Mérida, you ought to bake in some time to head north and check out the beach town of Progreso. Here, cruise passengers disembark onto the world’s longest shipping pier — an astounding four miles — before exploring the shops, snack bars, and restaurants that line the Malécon, the town’s beachfront promenade. Kick off your sandals and tuck into some fresh ceviche under one of the palapas on the beach while enjoying views of the Gulf of Mexico — and perhaps a pink flamingo or two.

Playa El Médano, Baja California Sur

Danny Lehman / Getty Images

While many Los Cabos beaches are not safe for swimming, Médano Beach is one of the few that are. In fact, this is the main beach in Cabo San Lucas, as it's two-and-a-half miles long and has some of the gentler waves in this part of Baja. It also happens to be one of the more popular beaches, so you may have to compete for space at the bars and restaurants that line the shore. It's for good reason, though — this is the place to be. The energy here is palpable, and you're never far from a frosty beach cocktail or five-star resort.

Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Quintana Roo

Paolo Picciotto / Reda & Co / Universal Images Group via Getty Images

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is a protected area of 1.3 million acres just south of Tulum. Rabinor recommended this destination for "those who love being surrounded by nature and appreciate the gifts of mother earth."

Here, you'll find undeveloped, white-sand beaches, languidly swaying palms, thick mangrove forests, and glittering cerulean waters. Pack your camera — this is where you'll see some of the best wildlife in the Mexican Caribbean, including dolphins, whales, spider monkeys, jaguars, and ocelots, among other creatures.

"Travelers can enjoy activities like wildlife spotting, birdwatching, snorkeling, kayaking, and 'floating' down the canals — all while savoring the untouched beauty of this protected area," said Rabinor. "Sian Ka'an serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation and sustainable tourism, providing a remarkable escape into nature's wonders and a chance to connect with the incredible biodiversity of the region."

Playa Tangolunda, Oaxaca

Huatulco, located in southern Oaxaca, is known for its nine picturesque bays — and the many beaches and gorgeous sunset views that go along with them. Most of the beaches here are in protected areas, so they’re free of development. At Playa Tangolunda, you’ll find plenty of natural beauty, as well as opportunities for sailing and scuba diving, several luxury resorts, an 18-hole golf course, and heaps of shopping and dining establishments in the neighboring town of La Crucecita.

Playa Maroma, Quintana Roo

Ask anyone about the best beaches in Mexico's Riviera Maya and Playa Maroma would certainly be on the list. This exclusive stretch is occupied by a few select hotels, whose guests enjoy the pearly white sand and calm, brilliantly blue water. This also happens to be one of the only places in Mexico where you can find a hotel with overwater bungalows . You won't stumble upon beach clubs or bars here — instead, you'll find exactly what your imagination dreams up when you think of an idyllic, tropical beach in paradise.

Isla Holbox, Quintana Roo

Isla Holbox is located just off the northern coast of Quintana Roo in the Gulf of Mexico. Once a must on the backpacker trail, the island has recently become a hotbed of Boho luxury. This dressed-down beach destination begs for bare feet and cold beer. Bring your yoga mat (and plenty of bug repellent) and listen to the faint sound of steel drums from Raíces, a seafood restaurant dishing out serious Caribbean vibes.

Playa Mujeres, Quintana Roo

Up until a few years ago, Playa Mujeres had a collection of hotels that you could count on one hand. This area, just north of Cancún's Hotel Zone, was a bit of a secret spot, beloved for its fine white sand and relative seclusion away from more raucous sections of the city. While the scene has certainly changed as more and more hotels have opened, the beach's original charm and beauty remain. You can still find peace and tranquillity with your special someone at the couples-only Beloved Playa Mujeres , or bring the whole crew to a larger resort like the TRS Coral Hotel or its sister property, the Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa .

Playa La Punta, Oaxaca

Playa La Punta, named for the promontory that forms the curving southern end of Playa Zicatela, is the slightly quieter section of Puerto Escondido’s most popular beach. This part of town has long been a hippie haven — roads are dustier, restaurants are more casual, and hostels reign supreme. But its reputation is changing these days, with more and more design-forward boutique hotels, and even a new outdoor food court. What remains, though, is the picture-perfect beach that is still everyone's favorite front-row seat at sunset.

Playa Paraiso, Quintana Roo

You cannot talk about Tulum without mentioning Playa Paraiso — arguably the most beautiful beach in the area, and one of the best beaches in Mexico. Just south of the iconic ruins, this spacious spot of sand is one of the top in Tulum for maximum chill. Day trippers from the area flock here just to see its picture-perfect color palette of white, turquoise, and green. It's also an activity hotbed for Tulum, whether you're interested in snorkeling, scuba diving, cooling off at a beach bar, or soaking up the sun.

Playa Blanca, Guerrero

Located about 10 miles southeast of Zihuatanejo, Playa Blanca may conjure up images of Andy Dufresne and Red reuniting on what looks to be the whitest sand known to man. And while that iconic scene from "The Shawshank Redemption" was actually filmed in the Caribbean, you can still find beaches that evoke the same "paradise found" feel. For Zihua, this has to be Playa Blanca, located outside of town near the airport. This seemingly endless stretch of sparsely developed beach gives off major Robinson Crusoe vibes — and is home to some of the most stellar sunsets we've ever seen. Hotel options are limited, but Las Palmas Luxury Villas will have you feeling like you've slipped off the beaten path and onto your own private beach estate.

Costalegre, Jalisco

Mexico's Costalegre is much more than a single beach — it's an entire stretch of coast along southern Jalisco, near the border of the state of Colima. The region's sheer rugged beauty makes every beach here worthy of this list. These days, many travelers come to this part of the state, south of Puerto Vallarta, to stay at luxury enclaves like Cuixmala and Careyes .

"The Costalegre and Costa Careyes is an amazing region of Mexico close to my heart," said Rabinor. "It’s remote and relatively untouched despite having two international airports on either side of it."

But with the promise of a new airport, better highways, and more luxury hotels, this is an area of Mexico that could soon be operating at a Los Cabos level of luxury. It's easy to see why — craggy cliffs spill down to pristine, golden-hued beaches, while green peaks climb in the distance. Palm trees and sea turtles outnumber tourists, and you'll often only hear Spanish being spoken at the beachfront seafood shacks.

Rabinor added: "There are eclectic (and eccentric) local and expat communities of creatives, escapists, magnates, and nature lovers sprinkled along the roughly 250 kilometers of coastline and into the interior too. This is heaven for bird watchers, surfers, beach strollers, and those who seek seclusion, nature, and wild landscapes — not to mention the odd wild party too."

Playa Cerritos, Baja California Sur

If Todos Santos is not already on your radar, it certainly should be. The Pacific Coast town is about an hour's drive north of Los Cabos, and has long been a hideaway for artists and surfers. Today, you can expect to find unique shopping, art galleries, and an oysters-and-Champagne crowd. Todos Santos has always been a choose-your-own-adventure type of place, and that's still true these days.

The area's most famous beach, Playa Cerritos, has been a surfing mecca for decades. Not only that, it's one of the few Pacific beaches in Baja that's totally safe for swimming. And while it may be a bit more populated now than it has been in decades past, it's undeniably one of the best beaches in Mexico.

Playa Canalán, Nayarit

Playa Canalán, a long, wide stretch of warm, white sand bookended by lush, jungle-covered mountains, was until recently completely undeveloped. Today, it's home to the One&Only Mandarina , the Canalan Beach Club , and the Italian restaurant Allora — all part of Mandarina, a new planned community that occupies some of the most coveted real estate on the coast.

Lagunas de Chacahua, Oaxaca

It's going to take a little extra legwork to get to this beach, but for those who brave the journey, the reward is simply sensational. A water taxi ride through Lagunas de Chacahua National Park, not far from Puerto Escondido, leads travelers to one of the most remote and idyllic beaches in all of Mexico.

This beach lies on the northern side of the inlet where Chacahua Lagoon spills out into the Pacific Ocean. Beach huts brim with adventurous surfers — many of whom have traveled from as far away as Australia to catch the perfect waves. "Lights out" is taken seriously in this part of Mexico, too — with almost no light pollution, you'll see stars for days. Don't expect flashy services, if any at all. This is truly a backpacker's paradise, where fresh ingredients, simplicity, and a surfboard are really all you need.
