Our next winery experience is the beautiful, heart-warming, and wholesome Saltrams. Let the hosts tantalise your palate as they showcase their favourite drops and share their knowledge with you on all things wine making in their rustic Cellar Door Barrel Hall. After the tasting it’s time for lunch, where you’ll enjoy an absolute Barossa feast with a selection of the finest Chef prepared hot and cold dishes, from the award-winning Salters Kitchen. There’s no rushing your meal, with ample time to enjoy some good company, get to know your fellow travellers. We head now to Menglers Hill lookout for a view and a half! Check out the Valley, see where you’ve been and where you’re heading, as it’s now time to head to the 3 rd winery and the most exclusive cellar door experience of your tour the stunning Rosenvale Winery. Opening only for Taste the Barossa guests, prepare to be WOW’d!!! The passion is palpable as Rosenvale’s hosts generously share with you the most spectacular wines you will surely ever taste. World Class is an understatement! Finally, a picturesque drive through Seppeltsfield will round off your perfect Barossa adventure, with time to grab a photo of the iconic Date Palms and learn about their fascinating origin, and the iconic Seppeltsfield legacy. Time now to sit back, listen to some quiet music and watch the scenery go by, or perhaps close your eyes for a quick nap, as we express back to Adelaide for approximately 5:30 PM and finish the perfect Barossa Adventure.

Taste the Barossa is a small family-owned company started by myself, Dallas Coull, and my wife, Nikki Coull. We met in 1997 while I was working in Greece and Nikki was on holiday from her home in Nottingham, England. We have three beautiful children, James (23), Georgia (21), and Tamsin (12). I have been involved in tourism in Australia for over 25 years, having previously founded Groovy Grape Getaways and am very proud to still see the Groovy buses travelling between Melbourne, Adelaide and Alice Springs today.

After spending six years in the UK with Nikki, we made the move to Australia in 2009 and started Taste the Barossa. I have a love for the Barossa Valley after spending a great deal of my youth there, with one of my first jobs being on a bottling line in a Barossa Valley Winery.

Over the last few years, we have assembled a fantastic little team that are as passionate about Adelaide and South Australia as I am. I know you will have one of the best Barossa Wine tours as you explore the stunning Adelaide wineries.

Time

Overflowing with more than 170 wineries, South Australia’s most killer drops are best discovered through a mixed bag of Barossa Valley wine tours and experiences.

Ain’t nothing wrong with getting lost in the r olling hills and country air of the Barossa – after all, this is premier Aussie winemaking territory so a visit should certainly be savoured. But if your mission involves digging up hidden gems, then signing onto one of the most eye-opening Barossa Valley wine tours and experiences is a no-brainer. Our pick of the most remarkable is calling.

Barossa Red Vintage Tours

Consider touring the region in a red London cab for a ‘full English experience’ filled with Barossa’s hottest hits, courtesy of Barossa Red Vintage Tours .

Facilitating a range of tours for up to six guests, including themed expeditions with Devonshire tea and stout tasting, and a half or full day out bouncing between wineries, distilleries, craft breweries and historical photo opportunities, your ride for the day is a 1972 Austin FX4 once owned by Sir Richard Branson.

Rehn Bier

One of the most character-filled Barossa Valley wine tours on offer, there’s even a ‘Meet the Locals’ three-hour group tour every Friday night where you’ll score an invitation to the tour operator’s personal social mixer that evening, plus dinner. Prices start from $410 for two people and each tour requires a minimum of two passengers.

Barossa Bespoke Tours

If you have a clear idea of what you’d like, Barossa Bespoke Tours specialises in creating detailed private itineraries so you get exactly what you pay for. A typical tour includes hotel transfers, visits to some of the region’s best-loved wineries , and lunch with paired wines at a local restaurant.

It’s priced from $800 for two adults and two additional guests can jump in on the two-person deal for an extra $150 per person. Part of the appeal of this service is the expert guide you’ll have on hand. Kym spent more than 20 years working within the Barossa Valley’s hospitality scene, managing several cellar doors and hotels, making this one of the most insightful Barossa Valley wine tours out there.

The Barossa Cellar

No visit to the Barossa is complete without a visit to The Barossa Cellar , a regional wine cellar (and Australia’s first) housing a staggering collection of rare and aged Barossa and Eden Valley wines. Best of all, it offers hosted, exclusive access to the country’s top drops, and an invitation to taste wines from the prestigious Barons of Barossa’s 3000-strong wine collection.

Its standout tour is the Barossa Vine & Wine Experience, allowing you to sit in the heart of the cellar, The Vault, and enjoy a private tasting, plus the ability to purchase a vine in perpetuity. Priced at $1,150 for two guests, it doesn’t come cheap, but this is exclusive access you’ll never forget on board one of the finest Barossa Valley wine tours.

Adelaide Sightseeing

Two excellent group tours, running all the way from Adelaide CBD, are offered by Adelaide Sightseeing . The first is a full-day, small group coach tour, the ‘Barossa Food and Wine Experience’, which makes stops at a handful of great wineries, including Pindarie Wines and Lambert Estate, some of the region’s finest foodie havens including Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop, and at a brilliant vantage point for happy snaps in Mengler Hill, one of the Barossa’s most unmissable things to do. Prices start from $175 per adult.

Meanwhile, the full-day ’Barossa and Hahndorf Highlights’ tour caters for a larger group than its other offering and includes a wine tasting at Jacob’s Creek, one of the Barossa’s best-loved wineries, a lunch and paired tasting at Lambert Estate, and a trip to Hahndorf, a gorgeous village filled with rich German heritage plus fascinating shops and art galleries. It’s priced at $170 per adult.

Small Batch Wine Tours

Live like a VIP for the day with Small Batch Wine Tours , which are renowned for their luxurious Barossa Valley wine tours. With keys to many of the region’s most exclusive wineries, some that don’t even open their doors to the general public, these guys provide incredible premium experiences to both small groups or couples seeking an intimate setting.

Seppeltsfield Winery

Opt for a VIP experience with Small Batch Wine Tours. (Image: Barossa Grape & Wine Association)

In its least exclusive offering, the ‘Small Group’ tour aims to avoid crowds, timing its arrival at the likes of Two Hands Wines, one of the Barossa’s most extraordinary wineries, and Izway Wines, a boutique label with a firm focus on organic farming, during quiet periods. Lunch is included, and prices start at $300 per adult.

On the super exclusive end, private expeditions for two, featuring lunch at Fino at Seppeltsfield, one of the region’s most celebrated restaurants , plus visits to four or so wineries are priced from $780 per person, while the ‘Penfolds vs Henschke’ tour is what dreams are made of.

Fino Seppeltsfield

Dine at Fino during a Small Batch Wine Tour. (Image: Fino Seppeltsfield)

Offering exclusive access to both Penfolds Grange and Henschke’s Hill of Grace, two of the wine world’s most applauded creations, and throwing in lunch at Fino once again, this is pure decadence. Prices start from $1,800 per person.

Hill of Grace experience at Henschke

Speaking of the most extraordinary blends going, Henschke’s ‘Hill of Grace Experience’ is worth mentioning in this ‘best of’ line-up.

Hill of Grace experience at Henschke

Don’t miss the Hill of Grace experience at Henschke. (Image: Barossa Grape & Wine Association)

Priced at $300 per person, the small group expedition, capped at six people, offers access to Henschke’s revered Hill of Grace vineyard, plus a once-in-a-lifetime chance to taste vintage varieties in a private tasting room, away from the label’s main cellar door, which stands as one of the Barossa’s best winery experiences regardless.

Visits to the working mechanics of the winery, plus samples of Henschke’s esteemed The Wheelwright, Cyril Henschke and Mount Edelstone drops are also included in the exceptional two-hour tour.

Barossa Unique Tours

Sometimes in life, hard choices will have to be made. With Barossa Unique Tours , that choice will be between a classic 1966 Ford Mustang convertible, a Jaguar XF or a motorcycle trike featuring a helmet intercom.

Offering everything from one-and-a-half-hour sightseeing tours (sans any wine tasting) to eight hours’ worth of winery and food experience hopping, all three head-turning automobiles will see you on the road like never before.

Prices start from $140 per person but soar all the way up to $500 per person for that memorable eight-hour journey in that super special Jag.

Taste The Barossa

Sample the best of the region under the wing of a local who once worked on the bottling line at Peter Lehmann Wines. Taste The Barossa , a small coach tour that hits the road from Adelaide before exploring wine country, will get you to the grand Chateau Yaldara in Lyndoch before a brief stop in central Tanunda, a gourmet cheese, meat and vegetable platter lunch and a wine tasting at Peter Lehmann, then more wine at Rosenvale Vineyards before rounding the day off at Wolf Blass. Groups are guaranteed to never exceed 20 people, and it costs $159 per person.

Barossa Helicopters

As the name suggests, you can also explore the Barossa Valley from above thanks to Barossa Helicopters , who offer multiple scenic flights as well as luxurious food and wine experiences. Located in Lyndoch and securing more than 20 landing sites right across the region, the team can get you wherever your racing heart desires in a matter of minutes.

Barossa Helicopter tours

Scenic ventures range from just four-minute flights, priced at $50 per person with a minimum of two people, to 30-minute journeys, priced from $230 per person.

St Hugo's winery lunch

Dine at St Hugo’s winery. (Image: South Australia Tourism Commission)

Fit in glorious lunches at either Pindarie Wines, Kies Family Wines, St Hugo or Chateau Yaldara’s Vintage Chef Co Cafe with journeys that range from three-and-a-half to four-and-a-half hours. Prices start from $399 per person.

Ultimate Winery Experiences Australia

It’s all about quality over quantity with the Ultimate Winery Experiences Australia crew, a high-end operator providing a wide range of unforgettable Barossa Valley wine tours.

Seppeltsfield Tawny Tasting

Join the ‘The Icons Of The Barossa’ tour for a world-class experience. (Image: Barossa Grape & Wine Association/ Sven Kovac)

Our pick of the lot? ‘The Icons Of The Barossa’ tour which includes Seppeltsfield’s exclusive Centenary Tour where you’ll sample extremely fancy fortified wines plus a vintage Tawny from the year you were born.

Seppeltsfield’s exclusive Centenary Tour

It includes Seppeltsfield’s exclusive Centenary Tour. (Image: Barossa Grape & Wine Association/ Sven Kovac)

Once you’re done there, you’ll move on to Yalumba, yet another must-visit winery pit-stop during your adventure in the Barossa Valley, where you’ll stickybeak through the iconic brand’s fascinating cooperage before tasting some of its finest creations and washing it down with a platter jammed with outstanding local produce. Prices start from $274 per person.

Day With The Dirtman experience at Gibson Wines

Rob Gibson, affectionally known in this neck of the woods as The Dirtman and founder of Gibson Wines, has been doing his thing for around 40 years, masterfully knocking together brilliant blends that take total advantage of the Barossa Valley’s unique winemaking climate and conditions.

In the six-hour ‘Day With The Dirtman’ tour offered by Gibson Wines , guests are treated to an itinerary hosted by the Gibson family themselves, plus wine tasting at one of their favourite wineries in Eden Valley, exclusive access to other undiscovered wineries, gourmet lunch inside their fabulous 18050s cottage, barrel tasting in their private oak cellar and much more. It’ll set you back $450 per person.

The Flagship Experience at Two Hands Wines

And while we’re talking about the best-loved Barossa Valley wine tours conducted by wineries themselves, we mustn’t neglect Two Hands Wines’ ‘The Flagship Experience’ .

Two Hands Wine Tasting

Do your best to sample as much of the range as possible. (Image: South Australia Tourism Commission)

Priced at $600 per person, this outstanding journey will see wine lovers jump into a luxury 4WD and drop in to sample the goods from three of the team’s favourite single vineyard wineries before off-roading to Seppeltsfield to explore Two Hands’ very own Holy Grail vineyard.

Soak up that serene Western Ranges atmosphere. (Image: South Australia Tourism Commission)

Back at the label’s cellar door, a long, meandering lunch will be served alongside a fleet of wines meticulously paired with each and every flavour.

A vigneron checks the wine in a cellar full of barrels

The 13 best Barossa Valley wineries

From wines that everybody’s heard of to boutique up and comers, these are the wineries to cross off your list when visiting the Barossa

Charles Rawlings-Way

Just a tick over 64km north of Adelaide, the compact Barossa Valley is one of the world’s great wine regions. This is traditional Peramangk and Ngadjuri country, with baking hot summers, cool winters and mineral-rich soils – perfect conditions for producing big, beefy red wines. Shiraz is the local hero, with some mighty fine rieslings emerging from the slightly higher, slightly cooler Eden Valley sub-region, just over the rise. There are more than 150 wineries in the Barossa, and an astonishing 80-plus cellar doors. You could spend weeks going between them, sipping fine wines all day long – but that’s probably not entirely sensible. Why not start with our 13 top picks, and take it from there?

An email you’ll actually love

Penfolds Barossa Valley Cellar Door

Penfolds Barossa Valley Cellar Door

It’s difficult to overstate the significance of Penfolds – both as an essential Barossa cellar door, and as an iconic Australian wine producer, founded in 1844. Penfolds’ famous Grange is one of Australia’s most collectible wines, and the only Australian wine granted heritage status by the National Trust. In 2021, a bottle of Penfolds’ debut 1951 Grange vintage sold at auction for $142,131 – not your average bottle of plonk!

At Penfolds Barossa Cellar Door, sign up for a 90-minute ‘Make Your Own Blend’ tour ($85), on which you step into winemaker mode and create your own mix of shiraz, grenache and mataro (something akin to Penfolds’ popular Bin 138 blend). Win friends and influence people with your take-home bottle. Also available is a one-hour ‘Taste of Grange’ tasting experience ($150), on which you sip your way through a range of Penfolds’ drops, including one vintage of Grange. Bookings are essential for both tours and tailored group tastings.

If you’re in Adelaide, we recommend a visit to Penfolds Magill Estate where the story began. The property features a fine dining restaurant, cellar door, underground drives, Grange Cottage (the original home of the Penfolds family) and the Magill Estate Kitchen – a casual bistro offering brunch and lunch.

Rockford Wines

Rockford Wines

  • Greater Adelaide

Arguably the best of the Barossa’s boutique producers (oh how they argue), Rockford is a marvellous collusion of heritage vibes (ramshackle 1850s farm buildings) and respect for the winemaking past. Freestone walls, warming winter fireplace, bottles with corks... it’s an endearing package. But Rockford’s wines are really why you’re here – approachable, affordable and down-to-earth. Just as earthy is winemaker Robert O’Callaghan, who brings an old-school attitude to his trade, using traditional methods and equipment.

O’Callaghan is also a writer: his annual newsletter, the Rockford Rag, is as hotly anticipated as every new vintage of his fast-selling Basket Press shiraz, sourced from specifically chosen plots of old Barossa shiraz vines. Whether or not there’ll actually be any Basket Press available for tasting when you visit is a seasonal question: autumn (April to March) is probably your best bet, with brilliant vine colours a bonus. Further improve your odds of some elbowroom inside (it’s an intimate cellar door) by arriving early or late. Tastings are free.

Seppeltsfield

Seppeltsfield

Magically secluded in the western Barossa backblocks, Seppeltsfield is less like a winery, more like a historic wine village. This sprawling complex of gorgeous stone buildings, founded in 1851 by recently arrived Silesian immigrant Joseph Seppelt, was Australia’s biggest wine producer in the early years of the 1900s. On-site today you’ll find regional fine-dining superstar Fino, coffee roaster/café Octeine, the Jam Factory art and design hub, Vasse Virgin luxe soap factory, a cooperage, Seppeltsfield’s cellar door, and all manner of tours and experiences. Give yourself at least an afternoon to soak it all up!

Getting here is half the fun. From Tanunda or Nuriootpa, take Seppeltsfield Rd – a meandering drive through the vines along a roadway lined with surreal colonnades of date palms, planted in the 1930s. Pay your respects at the Greek-inspired hilltop Seppelt Family Mausoleum en route, built in 1927. When you eventually roll into the cellar door, don’t miss a lick of tawny port, Seppeltsfield’s flagship product. Tastings kick off at $10, ramping-up through ‘Taste Your Birth Year’ experiences and tours of the Centennial Cellars, home to Seppeltsfield’s barrels of 100-year-old tawny. Book ahead.

Hentley Farm

Hentley Farm

Regularly finding itself on top of ‘SA’s Best Regional Dining’ lists, the restaurant at Hentley Farm is just as well known as the cellar door. On the wine front, the key to success here has been the soil. This part of the northwestern Barossa is traditional farming country, but with the aid of a 1950s geological survey map, winery founders Alison and Keith Hentschke zeroed in on some acres of deep red soil over limestone bedrock – a solid shiraz set-up – and bought the farm in 1997. The first Hentley Farm wines – shiraz, zinfandel, grenache and viognier – rolled off the (charmingly modest) production line in 2002, all grown within the estate’s boundaries.

Today, Hentley Farm is memorably high-end, but remains understated, unhurried and un-snooty. Cellar door tasting fees (redeemable with purchase) vary with quality, quantity and duration, starting at $15. But why not stay for lunch? Hentley Farm restaurant is a total knock-out, serving up chef Clare Falzon’s regional fare, all sourced from the farm, from along nearby Greenock Creek, or from local farmers’ fields and veggie gardens.

St Hallett

Plenty of Barossa wineries trade on their history, their estimable family lineage, their historic architecture, their snappy steel-and-glass cellar doors… Which is all very appealing. But St Hallett takes a different approach; namely, producing an excellent and affordable range of blends and pure varietal wines, using only Barossa grapes, and delivered without a whiff of pomp or pretence. You could even say that St Hallett is a humble outfit – which they needn’t be, given that the winery was founded by the Lindner family in 1944, one of the original Barossa wine families, who emigrated from Silesia in 1838. But history isn’t the main focus here: St Hallett is all about characterful wines, unpretentious service and good bang for your buck.

Cellar door tastings (book ahead) start at $15 for six wines, including a dry rosé and St Hallett’s flagship Blackwell Shiraz. Generous cheese platters, hampers, picnic baskets and chocolate-and-wine tasting flights are also available.

St Hugo Wines

St Hugo Wines

Actually, St Hugo is more than good enough. And you don’t have to be a hot-blooded Formula 1 driver to enjoy yourself here (…you might even get a taste of the Ricciardo-branded vino ‘DR3 x St Hugo’, available in high-speed 2014 shiraz or fast-cornering 2015 cab sav).

But beyond savvy marketing collabs, St Hugo remains an essential Barossa winery, offering a slick, contemporary cellar door experience grounded in Barossa bloodlines. St Hugo is named after Hugo Gramp, grandson of Barossa pioneer Johann Gramp, who planted his first vines in 1847 and went on to found Gramp & Sons winery. Hugo was running the family biz by 25, but died in a plane crash in Victoria in 1938, aged just 43.

These days, St Hugo continues grandpa Gramp’s traditions. Tasting experiences start at $15 (non-redeemable), elevating to $225 for a lunch-and-wine extravaganza prepared by executive chef Nik Tucker in St Hugo’s lofty glass-and-timber diving space. Book ahead.

Saltram Wines

Saltram Wines

Nuriootpa is a pragmatic service town, Tanunda is touristy, Lyndoch and Greenock are outliers… Zero-in on little Angaston (population 2,100) instead, our favourite Barossa town, with lovely old architecture and great cafés and pubs along its bendy main street. A few kilometres to the west is Saltram, a property established not long after William Salter jumped off the boat from Devonshire in 1844. Shiraz has been Saltram’s focus since day one, but at a tasting session here today you might get a look at an adventurous shiraz-tempranillo blend or a tawny. Or you can sign up for a vertical tasting flight, sampling single-vineyard shiraz from three different Saltram blocks ($60 per person, including a take-home bottle of wine per couple).

The glass-fronted restaurant here, Salters Kitchen, is a mod addition to the historic stone estate and is usually buzzing, serving generous wood-oven pizzas (try the lamb, olive, goat’s cheese and rosemary edition), plus shared platters and steaks. Book ahead for everything.

Henschke

The shining star of the Eden Valley sub-region, just over the hill from Angaston in the eastern Barossa, is Henschke. The vineyards here have been producing grapes for more than 150 years – plenty of time for the Henschkes to figure out how to make a great red. And indeed, their Hill of Grace Shiraz – big, booming and velvety – is second only to Penfolds Grange on most people’s lists of vin rouge must-dos.

The Hill of Grace Experience ($150) is your chance to slip some across your lips, with tastings, a winery tour, and a look around the namesake Hill of Grace vineyard, with its chunky vines and cute stone chapel. Or book a visit to Henschke’s cellar door for a suite of less wallet-threatening tasting experiences, starting at $10 (waived if you buy a bottle). The cellar door itself is an old-meets-new fusion of stone, steel and stylin’ stools. And if you’re in Adelaide, don’t miss a top-flight meal at the Hill of Grace restaurant at the Adelaide Oval.

Peter Lehmann Wines

Peter Lehmann Wines

When Peter Lehmann passed away in 2013, the Australian wine world went into collective mourning. Lehmann was a fifth-generation Barossa winemaker – a much-loved figure across the valley, and across the nation. He’s often credited with saving the Barossa wine industry in the 1970s, when a grape glut was sending many growers to the wall. In a fit of altruism, Lehmann bought up the excess grapes, built a winery, made some wine and sold it, funnelling the profits back to the grateful growers.

With an epic redgum tasting bar, the cellar door here occupies an 1880s stone structure nooked into the banks of the North Para River. Book yourself in for a 30-minute group tasting ($10) or a one-hour premium session ($50). Afterwards, kick back on the rolling lawns, which regularly host ageing musos (Simple Minds, Rod Stewart, Jimmy Barnes et al) as part of the Day on the Green concert series. If Rod ain’t rockin’ (or even if he is), a bottle of Stonewell shiraz and a cheeseboard will do nicely.

David Franz

David Franz

The son of Barossa winemaking legend Peter Lehmann, David had some big shoes to fill, and he’s done so by doing things a little differently. The rustic cellar door at his winery, not far from the old man’s estate alongside the nearby North Para River, is a quirky, ramshackle affair – all wonky old timbers, corrugated iron and stone – with a little terrace studded with umbrellas and wine-barrel tasting tables. Sit and sip as your eyes tumble over the vine views, and you much into a tasting platter of good regional things (nuts, smallgoods, cheeses, breads, olives, oils and vinegars). You see? You don’t have to be a big, brassy Barossa Baron to nail this cellar door gig.

On the wine front, David casts his net beyond the Barossa proper, into the Eden Valley (semillon and riesling) and as far as the Adelaide Hills (chardonnay) – but shiraz is why everybody’s here (some things you just shouldn’t do differently). An excellent sticky (botrytis semillon) and an old tawny will round off your tasting afternoon.

Yalumba

  • Adelaide Central

On the outskirts of Angaston, Yalumba is Australia's oldest family-owned winery, harking back to 1849 when Brit brewer Sam Smith planted his first vines here. Smith took off to the Victorian gold rush in 1852, returning to Yalumba with a princely £300 in his pocket. Most of this bounty went towards building Yalumba’s amazing old stone buildings (including a vertically challenged chimney), which make the detour off the main road all the more rewarding.

As any Australian alive in the 1980s will tell you, Yalumba is a brand synonymous with the humble wine cask. Yalumba may have built a modern fortune at the budget end of the wine spectrum, but at the cellar door here you can broaden your understanding of their offerings with some exceptional Barossa reds. Tastings range from $10 to $100, the latter granting you a sniff at five vintages of the Caley, Yalumba’s top drop. Book ahead, or walk-ins are welcome. Winery tours range from one to four hours.

Château Tanunda

Château Tanunda

Whoa, this place is big! The turreted, château-like main building is a Barossa architectural icon, built in 1880 from bluestone quarried at nearby Bethany. It was South Australia’s second-largest building at the time (after a Port Adelaide wool store), and by 1892 was pumping out 200,000 gallons of vino a year. The Seppelt family (local wine royalty) bought the winery during WWI, but by 1998 it had become a crumbling ruin. Cue wandering South African winemaker John Geber, who happened to be cycling past and bought the place on spec.

But enough history. A couple of decades (and many millions) later, Château Tanunda is back in the game, bottling up affordable wines that deliver boundless Barossa single-vineyard authenticity. At the top of the tree, hundred-year-old vines (some of them 150!) contribute to the ‘Everest’ range of fine semillon, shiraz and grenache. Tours and tasting are predictably numerous: start your visit with an 'Old Vine Expressions Tasting Experience’ ($50), then head for the croquet lawns.

Jacob's Creek

Jacob's Creek

Similar to some of the other big-ticket Barossa wineries, the cellar door at Jacob’s Creek, one of Australia’s leading wine exporters, is less of a tasting booth, more of a lifestyle – the kind of place where you come to sip some wines, then stay all day.

If you’re in leisure mode (this is you, right?), have a coffee and a platter lunch in the café, sniff out some herbs in the kitchen garden, or spread a blanket by the vines and launch into a picnic hamper (you can keep the blanket!). Feeling more active? Send down a few aces on the tennis court, play table tennis, explore the bike tracks and native gardens, or wander along the banks of slow-flowing Jacob’s Creek itself.

Distractions and attractions are certainly myriad, but wine remains the main game here. Tastings are democratic and affordable, starting as low as $5 (non-redeemable). If you want to grab a bottle or two to go, ask about Jacob’s Creek’s adventurous ‘Limited Release’ range, featuring the likes of vermentino, gewürztraminer and fumé blanc, plus organic and biodynamic wines.

Why Visit Barossa Valley?

The Barossa Valley has often been referred to as 'South Australia's answer to Napa Valley' thanks to the abundance and quality of its wines. Less than 50 miles from the Australian capital of Adelaide, the region is home to some of the most famous names in Australian wine, and it's not hard to see why. The vineyards are plentiful, the wine tasting opportunities numerous and Aussie hospitality some of the warmest in the world! Variety is the spice of life here, with various sub-regions including the pretty Clare Valley and elegant Eden Valley sitting slightly further out from the centre of Barossa and providing picturesque and peaceful views alongside yet more great wine. Here, visitors can soak up the good life amongst five-star wineries, intimate accommodation and gorgeous views of the Australian countryside.

The way of life here is laid-back and easy, with plentiful outdoor activities from trail cycling and mini golf and helicopter and hot air balloon rides alongside a proliferation of wine experiences with some of the biggest and best that Australia has to offer. Instantly recognisable names include Penfolds, Wolf Blass, Peter Lehmann and Jacob's Creek, and the majority of wineries are more than happy to throw open their doors to eager guests.

The food traditions here are also excellent, with vast quantities of outstanding local produce showcasing the fertility and plenty of the land. The towns of Tanunda and Nuriootpa are both brilliant culinary destinations, with everything from coffee shops to fine dining available to calm those hunger pangs ... best paired with a glass or two of local wine, of course!

The Barossa Valley is  a wonderfully celebratory destination, with an overflowing yearly calendar of events offering something for every kind of visitor. Wine tasting masterclasses with various producers are available at all times of year, whilst the Barossa Gourmet Weekend in early September is a fabulous way to experience the gastronomic specialities of the region. There are also various agricultural shows offering local produce. If you're visiting in April, don't miss the Barossa Vintage Festival, one of the area's biggest and best regional events. With up to 90 events taking place across 5 days, the festival features everything from music to wine, all presented with classic Aussie conviviality!

As wine lovers, we had it on the very top of our bucket list during our visit to South Australia. We were interested to join one of the Barossa Valley Tours that take care of all the logistics, as we planned on tasting as much wine as we could.

Also keen to taste some of the best produce sourced from the area, we searched for the best food tour in Barossa Valley, including visits to the winery. And we found one!

We joined a full-day Wine and Food Experience of the beautiful Barossa Valley and we had such a fantastic (and delicious) time!

Our driver-guide Phil collected us from Adelaide Central station with a big smile. We hopped onto our comfortable coach for the day and settled in for a good day.

The group was made of 20 passengers today, all keen to taste the best of what this region has to offer. We left the city behind and made our way through the gorgeous maple tree-lined streets of North Adelaide.

It wasn’t long before we hit the highway on our way to the Barossa Valley to start off the best food tour in Barossa Valley in style.

Wine and cheese to start the day – yes, please!

The first stop of the day was Pindarie Winery, a gorgeous property surrounded by rolling vineyards. Our group gathered in a stunning farmhouse room as our host, Stuart guided us through six different wine tastings.

Most importantly, we were invited to snack on some local triple cream brie, pecorino cheese and quince paste with crackers. Naturally, this helped us to appreciate these delicious red wines.

The information provided about the wine-making process at this winery was wonderful.

After the wine tasting was complete, tea and coffee with a chocolate brownie were served. And had a chance to appreciate the sweeping views of the property.

This was already feeling like the best day ever!

It’s back to the coach and on the way to our next stop. Passing through some charming little towns along the way was a nice surprise.

My favourites were Tanunda and Nuriootpa. Shortly after, we arrive at a lovely property sitting on the edge of a picturesque lake, surrounded by olive and quince trees.

This was Maggie Beer’s Farmshop and restaurant. You can taste some of her yummy preserves, oils, jams, and goods here.

Best Food Tour in Barossa Valley – So many delicious things to taste!

I was excited to find that the cooking show ‘The Cook and the Chef’ was filmed right here. Standing on the same kitchen TV set as Maggie Beer was kind of cool. I’ve admired her style of cooking for many years.

Above all, you can purchase all of Maggie’s products in the shop. Even though major supermarkets stock many of Maggie Beer products, I found a few that were only available to buy only here.

We were back on the road after stocking up on some goods for our pantry. Weaving our way through the rolling hills of the Barossa Valley we reached our lunch stop. Naturally, this would include more wine tastings. Bring it on! The reason I chose one of these Barossa Valley Tours is for the combo of great food, paired with delicious wine.

Two-course lunch with stunning views

Lunchtime! I’ll be honest with you, I had been looking forward to this part of our wine and food tour of Barossa Valley for days now.

It didn’t disappoint. Lambert Estate Winery is another stunning property. Both inside and out.

best barossa valley wine tours

We were guided through a structured wine tasting by our host. This tasting included a mixture of white and red wine. Wow, the white wine was on par with the quality of the reds!

As our host provided tasting notes and information, we were treated to our first course, an antipasto board. Yum.

There was a little time between courses to explore the winery. This was a perfect opportunity to capture some photos of the vineyard.

The contrast of the autumn colours of the area were so pretty.

Set against the clear blue sky, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Then it was time to go back to the dining table to enjoy lunch. Platters of beef & chicken fillets alongside fresh lentil and barley salads are served. Also green salads and potato wedges.

A few more tastings of the lovely Lambert Estate wines before finishing with a nice surprise. A chocolatier is a fortified wine with hints of chocolate. The perfect way to finish.

Wine and chocolate go perfectly together

After that super satisfying two-course lunch we pushed on to our next stop. This one was quite unique. Wine and chocolate paired together at Barossa Valley Chocolate Company.

I have to admit, sparkling dry white wine pairs well with white chocolate. Also, I would never have guessed that Moscato tastes lovely paired with milk chocolate.

A few more stunning views before we leave…

Before we departed the gorgeous Barossa Valley region, we had a chance to snap a few more photos. First at Mengler Hill Lookout. And then on the drive through the avenue of palms at Seppeltsfield.

So beautiful. The drive back to Adelaide was very relaxing.

Firstly a special thank you to our wonderful guide, Phil. He was funny, friendly, and very knowledgeable.

10 Amazing Food & Wine Experiences in Barossa Valley & Adelaide Hills

If you’re a wine connoisseur, then you’ll already know that The Barossa Valley births some of Australia’s finest wines.

Globally recognized brands such as Jacob’s Creek have their vineyards and wineries here, and if you’re looking for high-profile food and wine experiences in Australia, then you’d need to look no further than The Barossa.

Visiting the Barossa Valley wineries and cellar doors in South Australia showed me just how much goes into making a bottle of wine and how important flavor profiles are when pairing wines with food.

Simply picking a red with steak and white with fish is not enough, as we learned on a wine tasting experience in The Barossa.

If you’re looking to learn about the food and wine in The Barossa, or go on a food and wine experiences, then you’ve come to the right place.

Below are some of our top food and wine experiences to enjoy in the Barossa and surrounding Adelaide regions.

Best Food and Wine Experiences In The Barossa Valley

Before we move on, let me say that Adelaide and its surrounds is known to be the food bowl region of South Australia .

I reckon you can bump that up to Australia. It’s exceptional and I always love returning to Adelaide for that reason alone.

South Australians eat so much good local food, which is great for diet, economy and environment. Ra Ra Radelaide!

1. Rubys Organic Cafe, Adelaide Hills

  • Hours: 7.30am – 3.00pm daily
  • Address: Shop 3/29 Mount Barker Rd, Stirling SA 5152

We loved this small cafe in Stirling, one of the prettiest villages in the Adelaide Hills.

It was a wet and windy night, the rain dripped down the window and orange and red leaves danced around outside in the wind.

Rubys Organic Cafe has an ethos of clean, organic eating. The food is fresh and using only the best local produce around.

Our meal set a high standard for the Barossa and Adelaide Hills region.

They have healthy vegan and gluten free options, and their coffees are fantastic. We also appreciate the portion sizes are appropriate.

2. Jacob’s Creek Cooking Class

One of the best food and wine experiences you can have, is a cooking class at one of the world’s most renowned wineries. It’s one of the top things to do in the Barossa!

The cooking school is located in the Jacob’s Creek organic garden, full of produce, in the original position of Anne Jacob’s garden (sister of William Jacob after whom the famous creek was named), which she tended to when the cottage was first built in 1837.

I loved knowing we were spending time in a place full of rich history and the views out across the vines that run beside the actual Jacob’s Creek and across to the sandstone building that is currently being reconstructed to be the new tasting home of St Hugo wines.

It wasn’t the history that made the tears prick, it was the passion and enthusiasm of Genevieve, our chef, and what she’s created because of that; sustainability, wholesome organic food mixed with a lot of love that goes straight from garden to plate.

This is what I love so much about South Australia. They care deeply about food and keeping it local and good for the body and for the economy.

Genevieve started the garden in 2012; it’s thriving and supplies almost all of the required produce for the kitchen in the Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre and Heritage Vineyard.

We walked amongst quince and olive trees, pulled out artichokes and herbs for our lunch, and snacked on flowers and plants such as society garlic (garlic flavour without the bad breath).

I don’t think there is anything that excites me more in life than to see people creating amazing things from their own passion and love. It has such a positive impact.

Genevieve was a primary school teacher, until one day deciding to step into the world of food, without any formal training.

She seized the opportunity to learn from some of the best chefs like Neil Perry and created a career based on her passion that has taken her to kitchens in Sydney, Malaysia, Indonesia and now the Barossa.

Genevieve threw us an apron and a recipe, and using some of the ingredients from the garden we started cooking.

Ruth, our lovely host, poured us a glass of Jacob’s Creek Reserve Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir . I usually struggle to drink one glass of sparkling wine, but this was so delicious I couldn’t resist.

What mother does not want a kitchen like this? Outdoor kit

chen with beautiful views, a poppadom snack in one hand and a glass of bubbly in the other AND no kids running at your feet!

What was even more amazing was how much Craig got into it! He usually steers clear of the kitchen committing serious faux pas like making pasta with ketchup sauce instead of passata.

Genevieve taught him a few tricks like rapidly cutting up veg, making your own paste with a mortar and pestle, and cooking a piece of salmon with presentation side down first.

Not only do you get to pick the food from the garden, and then cook it, you get to eat it in the old servants quarters of Jacob’s Estate Cottage, with matching wine from Jacob’s Creek.

The fire was burning and the day, although slightly chilly, put on its splendour for us with blue skies and the autumn colours.

The cooking class was a fabulous experience that any small group can have when they visit Jacob’s Creek, but it must be booked in advance.

You can book at the Jacob’s Creek Visitors Centre, or you can book your class online here.

3. Woodside Cheese Wrights, Adelaide Hills

  • Hours: 10.00am – 4.00pm daily
  • Address: 22 Henry St, Woodside, SA 5244,

I don’t think there’s a better way to kick-start your wine experience in the Barossa than sitting down to a cheese tasting session.

The cheeses we tasted at Woodside Cheese Wrights were some of the most unique and innovative cheeses I’ve ever eaten.

Woodside is more than just good cheese, it’s an interesting story of Kris Lloyd who fell into cheese making.

She decided to introduce cheese tasting as an add on to her family’s vineyard and took over Woodside Cheeses to resurrect it’s crumbling status.

One day, her cheese makers went to a conference and she was left to make the cheese. She dove right into the whey and curd and discovered a new passion.

Since then she’s been experimenting and making unusual artisan cheese that stands head and shoulders above everyone else.

Even her labels speak innovation – no cheesy moo cows to be found.

Kris has been told over again that the cheese she wanted to make couldn’t be done.

It’s that defiant spirit that can be found in cheeses like the award-winning Monet , a goat’s cheese with organic flowers on top; Goat on a hot tin Roof , Chevre with Chilli, Saltbush, Native Pepperberry and crushed Tanami Apples; raw milk cheese (she’s one of the only cheese makers licensed in Australia to do this; and a wide variety of buffalo milk cheeses (and they’re more innovative than just buffalo mozzarella.

Kris likes to use local ingredients for her cheeses, including indigenous plants like lemon myrtle and bush tomato. Before we left, Kris told us her best tip – enjoy your cheeses with a glass of bubbly. It’s the perfect match.

4. Star of Greece, Port Willunga

  • Hours: 12.00pm – 3.00pm Sunday – Wednesday, 12.00pm – 9.00pm Thursday – Saturday
  • Address: 1 Esplanade, Port Willunga SA 5173

Every person we spoke to about visiting the Star of Greece on the cliffs of Port Willunga told us how much we’d like it.

We started with Braised Port Willunga olives, and I had Kangaroo Island King George whiting, watermelon & mint salad, gribiche, hand cut chips, and Craig had Kangaroo Island salt & pepper squid, chipotle mayo, watermelon and mint salad, lime.

The food was fresh and local, and contemporary versions of some of Australia’s favourite traditional dishes. And watching dolphins swim in the calm waters below made this lunch date in Barossa turn more into a bucket list moment.

For the healthy coffee lovers, the owner will soon be making coffees with homemade almond milk, which tempts me to return!

Reserve a table here, or eat mid-week because word on the street is that it gets very busy.

5. Jacob’s Creek Food & Wine Masterclass and Two Course Lunch

I think everyone needs a friend like James.

James is the Jacob’s Creek sommelier and after our experience with him in the food & wine sensory experience (see below), we tried to convince him to start his own app to give recommendations on wines when you are out and about.

The 2.5 hour Masterclass is held in the Jacobs Creek visitor Centre and if you can peel your eyes away from the stunning 350 year old gum tree that forms part of the panoramic view from the windows, you’re sure to learn a lot about wine from James.

He’s a wealth of knowledge about how to correctly pair it with food. This experience taught me that I know nothing about wine and how much more I can enjoy a meal if I choose wines to match.

I now know that salmon is best paired with chardonnay, although you do have to consider how the salmon is cooked as sometimes another wine may suit the cooking style or sauce flavours better.

Chardonnay is making a classy comeback. Chardonnay is the wine maker’s playground and is where their creative flair can emerge, which is why you can get so many different styles and tastes.

We also learned that Riesling is more for the formulaic wine makers. It can only be produced in certain circumstances and must not be played with.

We must tell you about the Double Barrel Shiraz, which is only made at Jacob’s Creek and took them three years to perfect.

The Shiraz is first matured in traditional wine oak barrels and then finished in a Scotch whiskey barrel. Whiskey barrels are charred on the inside and so give back a richer, deeper and smoother flavour.

We loved it and I think was possibly my favourite wine, which is actually a hard thing to decide on because I loved so many.

I could write a post called “ 52 things I learned about wine thanks to James”. I want him on speed dial so every dinner party meal now will be superb.

The class is followed by a two course lunch consisting of main course and dessert. It was wonderful to eat another meal with produce that came direct from Genevieve’s’ fabulous garden.

6. Melba’s Chocolates, Adelaide Hills

  • Hours: 9.00 am – 4.30pm daily
  • Address: Melba’s Chocolates is located next door to Woodside Cheeses, 22 Henry St, Woodside, SA 5244

Melba’s Chocolates was born in 1981 by Graeme and Joy Foristal in a small wash house behind their Adelaide Restaurant, ‘Melba’s’.

They soon saw the demand for a bigger space and brought the derelict premises they reside now in 1990, which is not derelict now, of course, but houses a thriving family business.

There are plenty of samplings to be had in the factory and we even got to roll our sleeves up and make a bunch of chocolate snow cones for our girls.

Of course we had to bring them back a bag of chocolate. They sneak out of their room at 6am in the morning to try and pinch them from the fridge.

I don’t have a strong sweet tooth, but I myself was sneaking out at 6am to steal the chocolate-coated cherries and raspberries.

7. Mt Lofty Summit Cafe, Adelaide Hills

  • Hours: 9.00am – 5.00pm Monday – Friday, 8.30am – 5.00pm Saturday and Sunday
  • Address: 266 Mount Lofty Summit Rd, Crafers SA 5152

We highly recommend walking to the Mt Lofty Summit Cafe , where you can burn off some energy and have a delicious lunch on Adelaide’s highest peak with views over the Adelaide Hills and across to the city.

On a good day you can see all the way out to the ocean. We did not have a good day. In fact we could not see anything at the summit, but imagination is all you need.

If you do get a clear day, this could be your view.

Our lunch was delicious and our experience here was another indication to me that Adelaide people could possibly top the nicest people in the world list.

The soup we had for entree was delicious and perfect for warming up the body after the cool walk up.

8. Jacob’s Creek Wine and Food Sensory Experience

This 2.5 hour sensory experience at Jacobs Creek is really interesting and fun and takes you on a sensory journey to explore how your five senses affect the way you taste wine.

How could it not be enjoyable sitting down to this. During a tasting you have the option to sip or spit out your wine.

James took us through a selection of Jacob’s Creek wines, which we paired with different types of food so we could see the impact each food had on the taste of the wine.

It enabled us to see which ones worked and which didn’t. We also focused on the smells of the wine and trying to shut off our brain to go with what our gut instinct told us was in the wine.

This, and the lunch Masterclass experience, helped me to view wine as something more than just something to throw down with a group of friends, or at 5pm after a long day with the kids. You can actually spend time with the wine experiencing its flavour and the stories that go into making it.

With each new glass of wine variety that we tried we learned a new story about the region, or the history of the area, and even of those who are busy working behind the scenes to take it from grape to glass.

So many great lessons can be learned from wine, right?

The Food and Wine Sensory Experience is held at the Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre. You can book your experience online here.

9. Apex Bakery, Barossa Valley

  • Hours: 7.30am – 4.30pm Monday – Friday, 8.00am – 2.00pm Saturday, 7.00am – 4.30pm Sunday
  • Address: 1A Elizabeth St, Tanunda SA 5352

Apex Bakery, in the town of Tanunda in the Barossa has been baking bread since 1924.

On passing, it would seem like just another place to get your bread and cakes, but inside lies another story of a family run business, which confidently claims to have the longest running, continuously fired commercial wood oven in Australia!

Slow ferment dough’s/breads and their pies and pasties are some of their specialties – all of which are made from recipes dating back to the 1800’s.

Johnny, our guide on the Barossa Trike Tours , took us inside and as he opened the door explained that on some Friday nights, they throw pizza in the oven and invite the locals down for a night of pizza and wine and conversation. It’s a tradition dating back many years.

As is the bread that Keith Fechner started making when, at 33, he bought the bakery he’d been working at since he was 12. His grandson, Cory took us out the back to look at this oven that never sleeps.

10. Adelaide Central Market

  • Hours: 7.30am – 5.30pm Tuesday, 9.00am – 5.30pm Wednesday, 7.00am – 7.00pm Thursday, 7.00am – 9.00pm Friday, 7.00am – 3.00pm Saturday, Closed Monday and Sunday
  • Address: 44/60 Gouger St, Adelaide SA 5000

No trip to Adelaide is complete without visiting the 140 year old Adelaide Central Market.

As with all things in this region, there is a real sense of community here.

The markets are filled with stories of local producers like Mario, the Green Grocer who has been selling fruit and veg from his farm for over 35 years; and The Italian Cafe, Lucina Italiana, which has been owned by three generations of a post-war immigrant family for 55 years .

We also highly recommend you take a tour of the Adelaide Central Markets with Mark Gleeson the owner of Providore, who is extremely passionate about sharing the markets and the stories of the people who make it so great.

Oh yeah, he makes pretty great chocolate as well, which you get to taste.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it, those are our top 10 food and wine experiences in the Barossa, and as you can see, there’s a lot of great places to ignite your taste buds here.

By the way, did you know there are over 51,000 varieties of grapes, and only 100 of them are grown in Australia? We’ll never grow out of new wines to taste!

Also, unlike France and other traditional wine making countries, Australia has no strict rules for how wine should be made, which means we have room for innovation.

That’s why our wines have been so well-received around the world.

We hope this guide helped you pick out a few places to ignite your culinary senses and gave you some ideas for where to learn about the region’s world-class food and wine!
