7 best cruises for seniors who love to travel by sea

Fran Golden

The best senior cruises mix adult-focused onboard activities with fascinating destinations ashore. No two retirees want the same thing from their travels. However, generally, most seniors have time to dedicate to longer itineraries.

Some have saved their money to enjoy a more premium cruise ship experience, but all are happy to snap up a cruise deal or find a promotion offering increased value from their cruise booking.

How did we choose the top cruises for seniors? We prioritized cruise lines that target couples and adults, rather than families, as well as cruise ships with fine dining, grownup entertainment and plenty of opportunities to socialize. We looked for destination-intensive cruises offering immersive cultural opportunities, bucket-list itineraries and a range of sailing lengths.

We dismissed the huge ships with their whiz-bang top-deck attractions, although these are ideal for grandparents on a multigenerational holiday with family. We also skipped the small expedition ships that require a level of physical fitness not all seniors possess.

Based on those criteria, here are the seven best cruise lines for seniors who love to travel and are looking to spend more time at sea.

best cruise line for elderly

Viking 's 930-passenger ocean ships top our list of the best cruises for seniors because they are designed specifically for an adult crowd. No one younger than 18 is allowed on board, and all the programming is created with passengers aged 50-plus in mind.

These cruises are ideal for academic-minded seniors. Viking chairman Torstein Hagen says that he set out to create "the thinking person's cruise," and lectures and other destination-specific programming are the main form of entertainment on board. That doesn't mean Viking cruises are boring, though. In fact, the crowd-pleasing ABBA tribute show in the theater is not to be missed.

Viking ships are comfortable, homey oases done up in sophisticated Scandinavian decor.

Itineraries are focused on getting senior cruisers to key attractions around the world, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with a shore excursion each day included in the cruise fare. Thrifty retirees will appreciate the "no nickel and diming" philosophy and cruise fares that cover everything except cocktails and spa treatments.

Complimentary dining includes a specialty Italian restaurant and the Chef's Table, with its rotating tasting menus themed around international cuisines.

Also recommended for the senior and baby boomer crowd are Viking's river ships in Europe , Vietnam and Egypt (among other destinations) and the line's expedition products in Antarctica and on the Great Lakes , which have similarities to the ocean ships, including the all-inclusive pricing.

Windstar Cruises

best cruise line for elderly

Windstar 's small sailing ships and motorized yachts range from 148 to 342 passengers. Although kids 8 and older are allowed on board, you are unlikely to see many on these upscale vessels. Most Windstar cruisers are active seniors who come as couples, pairs of friends or solo travelers, looking for a destination-rich experience on ships where they won't feel lost in a crowd.

Windstar has two classes of ships. Older couples celebrating a milestone anniversary should choose a sailing ship, with its vast open deck space and picturesque sails that set the mood for romance. Seniors who prefer more personal space should seek out the 312-passenger motorized yachts with their all-suite accommodations.

Cruise highlights on all ships include an outdoor deck party with a lavish buffet and late-night conga line, as well as meals created by James Beard Foundation-affiliated chefs. (Windstar partners with the prestigious culinary organization.)

Because of their small size, all Windstar ships can visit quiet harbors and out-of-the-way places that big ships can't in destinations like Tahiti, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean .

Azamara Cruises

best cruise line for elderly

With four nearly identical ships holding fewer than 700 passengers each, Azamara has carved out a niche catering to well-traveled seniors looking to cruise in clubby surroundings.

The line's cruises are best for seniors who don't want to splurge on a fancier luxury product but still want an upscale level of ambiance, service and amenities. While kids aren't banned, the line makes clear on its website that it "discourages" passengers younger than 18.

Azamara passengers appreciate the boutique hotel-like decor, which includes faux fireplaces in the impressive libraries, called The Drawing Room on each vessel.

The line's destination-focused itineraries in Europe and elsewhere spend more time in ports than average ships, staying overnight in key destinations. This is ideal for passengers who want to explore on their own. The line also offers a complimentary "AzAmazing Evenings" program on every cruise. They feature cultural performances ashore in amazing destinations, such as Turkey's ancient city of Ephesus.

Holland America

best cruise line for elderly

Holland America is one of the best cruise lines for seniors because it hits the sweet spot with its midsize ships. Carrying 2,668 passengers or fewer, these vessels offer big-ship amenities but lack the more over-the-top waterslides and thrill attractions found on megaships. The line is a great choice for baby boomers and older seniors who wish to enjoy the line's alternative dining options, casinos and choice of entertainment.

An older crowd does not mean a sedate group. Holland America hosts live music in a big way. Passengers dance the night away at venues that include B.B. King's Blues Club, featuring some of the best live bands at sea. Explorations Central (EXC) programming is designed to educate passengers about the destinations they visit, and a fun roster of other onboard pursuits includes a winemaking experience with Chateau Ste. Michelle.

The ships are also particularly accessible. Many staterooms offer roll-in showers and other assistive features. Vessels also are equipped with a lift system for pools and tenders.

In addition to one-week cruises in the Caribbean and Alaska (the line's specialty), Holland America explores South America, the South Pacific and other destinations around the globe. The line also offers months-long world cruises.

best cruise line for elderly

Senior travelers with a penchant for traditional cruising will find Cunard 's ocean liners to be a top cruise option. Founded in 1840, the cruise line has a long legacy and is proud of its less casual vibe, which includes nightly dress codes. Go old-school with dress-up galas held in real ballrooms with high ceilings and twinkling chandeliers. Gentlemen hosts are on hand if ladies need a dance partner.

Those same ballrooms host daily afternoon tea, complete with finger sandwiches and scones with cream, served on fine china by white-gloved waiters. Other refined onboard activities include watching shows in Queen Mary 2's onboard planetarium, attending lectures by guest speakers, fencing, taking art classes and enjoying classical concerts.

Not everyone stays in a fancy suite, but seniors ready to splurge should book either Queens Grill or Princess Grill rooms for upscale accommodations and meals served in exclusive, intimate restaurants.

QM2 is the only ship that offers regular transatlantic service between Southampton, England, and New York. The 2,081-passenger Queen Elizabeth and 2,061-passenger Queen Victoria spend time in Europe and other destinations, and all three ships offer world cruises around the globe. When it debuts in 2024, the line's 3,000-passenger Queen Anne will also sail in the Mediterranean.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

best cruise line for elderly

Retirees who have worked hard and are ready to treat themselves right will find that Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the best cruises for seniors looking for luxury.

The cruise line brags of operating the most luxurious ships afloat. It's hard to argue that point, especially on the line's latest ship, $545 million, 746-passenger, all-suite Seven Seas Grandeur. The ship boasts a football field's worth of marble, an impressive art collection and one of the most expensive suites at sea — a Regent Suite, which is priced at $11,000 per day, per couple.

Other high-end lines, such as Seabourn and Silversea , operate intimate ships with extraordinary service, accommodations and cuisine. However, Regent differs with its shore excursion-inclusive, one-stop-shopping fares and grand European hotel ambience — especially on the sister ships Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Explorer.

The other Regent ships are well-maintained 480- to 684-passenger older vessels. On all, if you don't feel like going to one of the restaurants, you can stay in your bathrobe and order a meal served course by course in your suite.

Also, except for summer and holiday periods, you are unlikely to find kids on board.

Regent sails to some 450 ports of call around the world, including world cruise itineraries, so senior travelers can find sailings to all the destinations they've been waiting to explore.

Oceania Cruises

best cruise line for elderly

Wellness-focused seniors love Oceania Cruises ' 648- to 1,210-passenger ships for their spa and fitness center and healthy food options. Foodies are drawn by the inspired dining. PBS host and cookbook author Jacques Pepin has a French bistro on the line's two largest ships, Marina and Riviera, and he's one of the line's culinary advisors. All the line's ships include impressive steakhouses , and some feature Red Ginger, an extraordinary modern take on Asian cuisine, as well as other eateries.

The ships provide an appealing country club-like ambiance, which is upscale without being fancy. Older passengers tend to be the sort who like to entertain themselves, though they might be distracted by the standout attraction of a real cooking school where expert chefs give classes on Marina and Riviera.

As a nod to solo travelers, the line is in the process of adding solo cabins designed and priced for one.

Oceania is known for destination-focused itineraries in the Caribbean, Alaska and Europe, among other places. Most are 10 nights or longer; world cruises are up to 180 days.

Bottom line

You'll find seniors on nearly every cruise line out there. Some older travelers are looking to explore the world, while others prefer cheap trips to beachy destinations.

Everyone's top choice will be different, but we think these seven lines represent the best senior cruises. They prioritize an adult-focused onboard experience and destination-intensive itineraries more readily accessible to retirees.

9 Best Cruises for Seniors to Take As Soon As You Retire

From relaxing in the Caribbean to exploring the rivers of Europe, these are the best cruises for travelers over 60.

best cruise line for elderly

Cruises offer advantages for travelers of all ages, but for seniors , conveniences like being able to visit many destinations without packing and unpacking, arranging flights, transfers, checking in and out of hotels, finding restaurants, and booking excursions are especially important. And, for seniors with limited mobility, those cruise features just might mean the difference between taking a wonderful trip or staying home.

Generalizing about individuals of any age, especially seniors, just doesn't work. Physically, many are as active and capable as 25 year-olds, while others may have limitations that prevent long walks or managing heavy luggage. Some are curious and want to see every detail on an itinerary; others are content to relax and watch the scenery go by. Many are entertained by learning new things or hearing from expert lecturers, while others enjoy nightlife and live shows. Limited budgets are not unusual among seniors with fixed incomes, while others can afford to choose more luxurious options .

There are cruises that meet every need. In fact, most large ships have so much to offer that couples or groups of friends cruising together can choose the activities they enjoy most and then join for dinner or cocktails at the end of the day. Solo travelers have opportunities to meet others during meals, excursions, or onboard activities. Many cruise companies and ships pay particular attention to amenities that make travel easier and more appealing for seniors , especially those with special needs. Travelers as young as 50 may be eligible for special discounts on cruises, so it's never too early to start planning a cruise for the next phase of your life.

That said, here are the 9 best cruises for seniors, from the rivers to the seas.

River Cruises for Seniors

Increasing in popularity with new ships added each year, river cruising is ideal for seniors.

Ports are usually close to cities, sailing is smooth, ships are small (with usually no more than 200 passengers), and most shore excursions offer several levels of walking intensity. For those who prefer to stay onboard, comfortable lounges, outdoor seating, and stateroom balconies provide the perfect views.

European rivers are among the most traveled, especially the Rhine and Danube, with lovely towns to see and visit. Others are the Douro, Seine, and Rhone as well as the Mekong in Vietnam, the Nile in Egypt, and the Volga in Russia. Cruises range from a week to as long as three weeks when several rivers are combined. Specialty river cruises might focus on food, wine, or Christmas markets. These are the top river cruise lines for seniors.

River Cruise Lines

Viking River Cruises are adults-only and on several rivers. Hit the Danube to get from Vienna to Bucharest, sail the Nile with Egyptologists, or pass through Holland during tulip season. Catering to retirees, with most passengers over the age of 60, Viking is for the well-traveled cruiser looking for their next adventure. It considers itself “the thinking person’s cruise,” with excursions and onboard programming designed with educational and cultural impact in mind. Their "Longships" offer larger suites and outdoor dining. Musical performances, lectures, cooking demonstrations, and destination insights provide plenty to do onboard.

AmaWaterways focuses on European cruises, but offers a few sailings through Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, as well. Their ship, AmaMagna, sails the Danube and offers twice the width of traditional river cruise ships, allowing for more lounge space on the Sun Deck as you glide to gorgeous locales, more intimate activities and excursions, and additional dining options. A range of shore excursions ensures there's something for everyone's interests and abilities at each port, from guided hikes and bike rides to cooking demonstrations. Everything is as convenient as possible with ports steps from points of interest, and concierge services that help travelers reserve their flights, airport transfers, and hotel reservations for before or after the cruise.

Avalon Waterways offers river cruises as short as four or five days for those who want to "test the waters" before a longer commitment. They sail across Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America, with special interest journeys like the Storyteller Series, which hosts authors like Candace Bushnell and Gillian Flynn onboard. With larger suites and fewer passengers, these cruises are perfect for passengers who want to stretch out and enjoy a quiet respite. Travelers can choose which off-boat activities they want to participate in (like picnics, kayaking, or painting) based on their abilities and what kind of trip they want. The plushly-appointed Panorama Suites with floor to ceiling windows and open-air balconies make your cabin one of the most comfortable places to watch the world pass by.

American Cruise Lines sails the rivers of the United States — including the Mississippi, the Ohio, the Hudson, and the Columbia and Snake Rivers — so you can go on an adventure without having to board a flight. Accommodations like large staterooms with interior entrances, elevators to all decks, and spacious public spaces will be appreciated by older passengers. Dine whenever you like on local fare (like gumbo on the Mississippi or a boiled seafood dinner in the Northeast) and enjoy the daily cocktail hour. Local experts join your trip and share knowledge and history about the area you're traveling through making your trip as educational as it is relaxing.

Ocean Cruises for Seniors

For ocean cruises, ships are usually larger and trips are longer, although it depends on the destination. Megaships have capacities of around 2,000 to 6,000 passengers; mid-size ships carry about 1,000-2,500; small ships can hold around 1,200 or less. Naturally, more dining options, entertainment, pools, and public areas are available on larger vessels. For seniors who are more comfortable remaining on the ship, there are many opportunities to keep busy, and the ship is a destination in itself. Travelers with limited mobility may choose shore visits carefully or decide to enjoy the view from afar as they take advantage of the ship's amenities and social scene.

Many oceangoing ships have accessible cabins and elevators, wheelchair-width doorways, and even special equipment to aid in boarding a smaller boat for shore excursions. Several have medical care and physicians aboard — a benefit for all passengers, not just seniors — for emergencies or illness. Most cruise companies request that they be advised of their passengers' special needs at least 45 days before departure to ensure that proper accommodations are arranged.

Oceangoing Cruise Lines

Holland America Line travels to South America, Antarctica, Alaska, Canada, New England, the Caribbean, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. A line preferred by many seniors, it offers staterooms with mobility assistive features such as space for wheelchairs and scooters, roll-in showers, grab bars, and lift systems to make tenders (smaller ships that go ashore in some ports) wheelchair accessible. Provisions are made on most ships for deaf or hearing-impaired passengers, as well.

Seabourn Cruise Line cruises the world from Australia and New Zealand, Asia, India, Africa, Antarctica, Alaska, and the Caribbean, to the Arctic, Northern Europe, and more. Staterooms specially designed for guests who require mobility assistance are available. Service animals are permitted (but not pets or therapy companions) as long as proper paperwork and vaccinations are current. Provisions are available for passengers who have limited eyesight or hearing, including large print or Braille menus and visual emergency alarms.

Azamara 's mid-sized ships sail to the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. Their “Destination Immersion” experiences mean longer trips with more time in port and overnights onshore, as well as onboard programming designed around your specific destination. Azamara takes an extra step even before the cruise begins by offering assistance getting on and off the ship for boarding and shore excursions. With advance notice, Azamara will even make arrangements for transportation from the airport to the pier.

Silversea 's small luxury ships range in size from 50 to 304 suites for travelers who prefer more intimate surroundings and atmosphere. Also, smaller ships can generally anchor closer to port cities, so disembarking is more convenient, and views are more interesting for those who stay on the ship. Your dedicated butler will help you with minutiae like unpacking and reservations, so you can just focus on relaxing. There's a low single supplement and "gentleman hosts" so you're never without a dance partner even if you're traveling solo. With gourmet meals, beverages (including premium spirits), gratuities, and activities all covered in the price, Silversea's cruises are not likely to attract children, which may be a plus for some seniors (as much as they might love their grandkids!).

Princess Cruises , considered by many to be one of the best cruise lines for seniors, offers many options: Various departure cities (including Florida for any local retirees), one-way or round-trip cruises, and Cruisetours that include extended land excursions. Rest assured that ships, destinations, and excursions are designed with accessibility in mind. Princess' crown jewel is their Alaskan cruises , during which passengers can meet sled dog puppies and handlers, hear from mountain climbers, fishermen, and loggers, and learn from experts about Alaskan wildlife without even leaving the ship. Most importantly, passengers can enjoy spectacular views from the comfort of the ship and marvel at sights unique to the 49th State.

Whether you pick an ocean sojourn or a river ride, cruises are some of the best ways to see the world. From the rivers of Europe to the blue-green waters of the Caribbean to U.S. trips you can board without ever getting on a plane, cruises take the convenience of a resort on the road. And as many cruise lines pay special mind to accessibility and inclusivity, they make traveling at any age (or solo) all the easier.

Make the memories of a lifetime on a cruise for seniors and retirees.

Cruises are an often dreamt-about retirement goal, especially for long-time cruise lovers who have always been short on time. Retirement can be the ideal season of life to sail off into the sunset for several weeks, whether to far-off lands like Antarctica or a peaceful journey down the Danube. In some cases, seniors embrace their golden years by booking epic, monthslong voyages around the world.

Many small- and medium-sized ships cater to the over-60 crowd, but that doesn't mean guests will be relegated to shuffleboard and bingo games. Today's seniors still have plenty of adventures to experience and memories to make, both on board and on shore. The following cruise lines offer the top bucket list sailings for seniors and retirees.

Windstar Cruises

Uniworld boutique river cruises, oceania cruises, holland america line, cunard line, aurora expeditions.

Anyone who has ever fancied a near-private yacht-style cruise experience will love the vibe of Windstar Cruises. Each of its yachts holds between 148 and 342 guests, with a 1-to-1.5 crew-to-guest ratio. This makes for more intimate sailings – not only because there's simply less ship to maneuver on foot, but also because Windstar ships have access to ports that megaships aren't permitted to enter. The end result is the unique ability to explore lesser-known destinations and smaller cities. While Windstar is not a strictly adults-only cruise line , you won't see any little ones on board, either. Children must be at least 8 years old to sail on the line, which further adds to the high-end ambiance.

In 2021 and 2022, Windstar's Star Breeze, Star Pride and Star Legend ships received a refresh. The three all-suite yachts were cut in half and enhanced with new suites and amenities, bringing the capacity to 312 passengers on each vessel. These Star Plus Class ships also boast new restaurants, a reimagined spa and fitness center, and more efficient engines, among other improvements. Elevators help make the Star Plus Class ships more accessible for anyone with limited mobility (note that Wind Class ships Wind Star and Wind Spirit do not have elevators). Additionally, Star Breeze, Star Pride and Star Legend each have four wheelchair-accessible suites, which feature a smaller queen bed and reduced "wheel around" space.

On board, passengers can drop by the Open Bridge anytime for an impromptu lesson in chart reading, listen to live music in the Lounge or jump directly into the water from the Watersports Platform. Culinary highlights include restaurant Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso, which serves a twist on modern Spanish cuisine by the 10-time Michelin-starred chef, as well as culinary shore excursions with hands-on cooking classes and chef-led market tours to explore fresh local ingredients.

The cruise industry is abuzz with interest in one of Windstar's newest itineraries, which introduces passengers to the Middle East. The Inaugural Sparkling Sands & Cities itinerary sets sail in November 2023, visiting Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates; Doha, Qatar; and Muscat, Oman, among others. Foodies will be especially interested in the James Beard Foundation's Sparkling Sands & Cities of the Persian Gulf itinerary, scheduled to embark in February 2024. Windstar's other destinations include Asia, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the South Pacific and more.

Spanning seven continents via river, ocean and expedition vessels, Viking is considered a quintessential high-end cruise experience. For more than 25 years, it has provided destination-focused sailings designed to allow its guests to explore the world in supreme comfort. Its voyages particularly appeal to travelers older than 50 who are interested in science, history, culture and cuisine.

Every Viking cruise fare includes a complimentary shore excursion in each port of call, onboard meals, beer and wine (with lunch and dinner service), Wi-Fi access, and all port charges and government taxes. On Viking's ocean and expedition vessels, guests also enjoy complimentary self-service laundry, access to the Thermal Suite in The Spa, high tea service, alternative restaurant dining and 24-hour room service. But the best part for older cruisers may be what's not included on Viking sailings: kids. This adults-only cruise line is dedicated to guests 18 and older.

Viking's fleet – with capacities ranging from 80 to 998 passengers (on river and ocean cruises, respectively) – feature elegant Scandinavian-style decor. The small ship cruises get closer to their destinations, spend more time in port and include more overnight stays, too.

One of Viking's newest ocean vessels, the all-veranda Viking Saturn, debuted in 2023 and focuses on European sailings. Its 10-day Empires of the Mediterranean route from Venice to Athens is particular popular, with stops in Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Greece. Another in-demand route is the Danube Christmas Delights itinerary on the Viking Longships, which visits enchanting villages, cultural capitals and iconic Christmas markets for a festive holiday cruise .

To suit their needs, guests can choose between different activity levels for walking tour-focused shore excursions. For bibliophiles, The Library on each ship is curated by acclaimed London bookshop Heywood Hill, as well as Cambridge University's Scott Polar Research Institute on the expedition vessels. Viking also holds exclusive partnerships with prestigious scientific institutions, which makes it possible for at least 36 experts – including field research scientists, mountain guides, submarine pilots and other specialists – to accompany passengers on each expedition journey.

A pavlova dessert served on board Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Uniworld ships are akin to floating boutique hotels, designed to reflect the destinations in which they sail – a vast list that includes ports in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. Guests will appreciate the exquisite details on board, including unique artwork from some of the most famous artists in the world (think: Pablo Picasso and David Hockney), handmade fabrics from local artisans and handcarved furnishings.

Holland America Line's Westerdam ship sails through Yakutat Bay in Alaska

Courtesy of Holland America Line

As a premium, midsize cruise line, Holland America Line offers plenty of destinations, excursions and activities aligned to an older audience. The smaller ship size, which averages around 2,000 passengers per sailing, allows for many of the ships to dock in ports that are inaccessible to larger ships, getting passengers even closer to the destinations they're visiting. For older passengers who may have limited mobility, the option to simply disembark the ship without waiting for a tender or other means of transportation can make or break a trip.

Holland America Line, though family-friendly, offers myriad excursions that are primarily adult-oriented and open to all types of adventurers. Shore excursions are clearly marked with an activity level ranging from easy to strenuous, from leisurely wine tastings and relaxing strolls through ancient towns to ATV rides through the jungle and dog-sledding on a glacier only accessible via helicopter.

Onboard entertainment and activities are plentiful; guests often enjoy the multiple music lounges and venues on each ship, along with hosted programs such as bingo and trivia. For seniors who can't get enough of the pickleball trend, Holland America Line has partnered with the Professional Pickleball Association to bring branded courts and equipment on board. After all that action on the court, unwind in the Greenhouse Spa & Salon with a rejuvenating treatment. (Pro tip: Add on the Thermal Suite for access to the healing hydrotherapy circuit and heated, tiled loungers that will melt all your cares away.)

The numerous onboard dining options bring together cuisines and flavors from all over the world, with specialty restaurants featuring menus developed by a team of master chefs known as Holland America's Culinary Council. In addition to casual dining in the Lido Market and multicourse affairs in The Dining Room, each ship also features the Pinnacle Grill, an onboard steakhouse offering high-end meats and seafood. Other specialty restaurants vary by ship and may include Italian eatery Canaletto and the French-inspired Rudi's Sel de Mer.

Holland America Line sails all over the world. It does an especially nice job with its Greek island cruises and Adriatic Sea adventures. One of the line's newest ships, Rotterdam , is a crowd-pleaser with its sleek design details and an onboard art collection valued at more than $4.1 million. Still, longtime favorites like the refurbished Oosterdam and Eurodam host plenty of happy guests.

There are four ships in Azamara's fleet. Each carries up to 702 passengers, so they still fit comfortably into the small ship category and can access less-visited ports than larger vessels. Destinations on Azamara include ports throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand, the Americas, and the Caribbean; there are also transoceanic itineraries. If spending roughly half a year on a cruise ship sounds like your ideal retirement plan, consider the Azamara World Voyage in 2025. Over 155 nights, you'll visit 37 countries.

Each of the line's ships has staterooms designed to accommodate guests with mobility limitations, and Azamara has created customized shore excursion tours for guests with disabilities as well. Accessible tours are designed for full-time wheelchair users or guests unable to navigate motor-coach steps.

There are plenty of entertainment options on board, including Club Crooner's hits from current and classic songbirds, as well as ship-specific venues with various song and dance performances. Plus, every cruise hosts a White Night signature dinner and entertainment event on the pool deck (so be sure to pack your favorite white attire). Unwind with darts, arts and crafts, pingpong, shuffleboard, trivia contests, bingo and dance lessons. Don't miss opportunities to attend lectures through the enrichment program.

Cunard Line's ocean liners have sailed between the U.K. and New York since 1840 – and the brand's relationship with the British monarchy is integral to its heritage. As such, each ship is named after a British queen. The newest ship, Queen Anne, joins the fleet in 2024.

In keeping with its history, Cunard Line has several signature experiences that help set the brand apart. Afternoon tea is a Cunard tradition observed daily in the Queen's Room; expect white-gloved waiters serving scones and finger sandwiches alongside infused teas in silver teapots (add Champagne for an additional fee). During gala evenings, guests don tuxedos and ballgowns for a sophisticated celebration you won't soon forget. Themes range from Masquerade to Roaring 20s; you'll get a heads-up before you pack your cruise attire .

Each of the four stateroom grades has its own dedicated fine dining restaurant with excellent service and indulgent menus, though there are several casual dining options as well – not to mention specialty dining venues for an additional fee. A host of activities will keep you busy day and night, including a library, open-air pools, fitness facilities, live music, theater performances, guest speaker events, board games, film screenings, art classes, planetarium shows (on Queen Mary 2) and group dance classes.

Accessible shore experiences are available in many ports, ranging from lower activity-level tours to adaptations for wheelchair users. Accessible staterooms are available on Queen Victoria , Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2 ; these come with modifications like wider entryways, nonslip bathroom floors and shower seats.

A Zodiac cruise in Antarctica with Aurora Expeditions ship Greg Mortimer

Scott Portelli | Courtesy of Aurora Expeditions

Nothing says "once-in-a-lifetime" quite like embarking on an expedition to the world's most remote destinations – and, specifically, to Antarctica. For cruisers looking to explore this far-off land, Aurora Expeditions is one of the most trusted names in the industry. Founded by legendary adventurer Greg Mortimer, the brand sends an education-focused expedition team on each voyage, with a ratio of about one team member per every eight passengers. With an average of just 132 cruisers on these sailings, you'll get more one-on-one time with your expedition team.

Seniors can climb aboard Aurora Expeditions' Greg Mortimer or Sylvia Earle ship for innovative itineraries to the Great White Continent. When the ship isn't pausing to watch breaching whales, passengers can kayak between icebergs, visit penguin colonies or take guided hikes across the tundra. Aurora describes its cruises as "100% climate neutral," with a commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

All of Aurora Expeditions' voyages let travelers explore at their own pace, making it a great option for all ages. There are many included activities on each expedition, such as bird-watching, photography, lectures on wildlife, Zodiac cruises and near-shore excursions. The line will even outfit you with Muck boots and waterproof polar jackets. The entire voyage is laid-back, with an informal dress code.

On board, all cabins have a view of the ocean, and most have their own balcony. Tips are included in the cost of your cruise, and guests can enjoy a complimentary house wine or beer with dinner. Look forward to hearty dishes to help fuel your activities, with some buffet-style meals, a la carte options and a reservations-required restaurant on each ship.

With a variety of cruise lines catering to the needs and preferences of older travelers, seniors can embark on memorable journeys to explore beautiful destinations while enjoying a range of amenities and activities.

When it comes to choosing the best cruise line for seniors, there are several factors to consider. Seniors often value comfort, accessibility, and a relaxing atmosphere, making it essential to find a cruise line that offers senior-friendly amenities and activities tailored to their needs. Additionally, health and safety considerations, as well as options for solo travelers and those with limited mobility, play a crucial role in selecting the perfect cruise line.

In this article, we will explore the top cruise lines that go the extra mile to cater to the needs and preferences of seniors. From luxurious ocean liners to intimate river cruises, there is a perfect sailing for every senior adventurer. So let’s dive in and discover which cruise line is best suited for seniors seeking a memorable vacation on the high seas!

Factors to Consider when Choosing a Cruise Line for Seniors

Choosing the right cruise line for seniors involves considering several factors that contribute to a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here are some key aspects to take into account:

  • Accessibility: Seniors may have specific mobility needs, so it’s crucial to ensure that the cruise line offers accessible amenities and facilities, including wheelchair accessibility, elevators, and easy-to-navigate layouts.
  • Medical Facilities and Services: Look for cruise lines that have well-equipped medical facilities and professional staff on board. This can provide peace of mind in case of medical emergencies or if you require regular health monitoring.
  • Dining Options: Many seniors prefer flexible dining options, such as open-seating or anytime dining, which allows them to choose when and where they want to eat. Some cruise lines also offer specialty restaurants with a variety of cuisines to cater to different dietary preferences.
  • Entertainment and Activities: Consider the variety of activities and entertainment options available on board. Look for cruise lines that offer enrichment programs, live shows, music performances, and educational activities suitable for seniors.
  • Itinerary and Destination: Evaluate the cruise line’s itineraries and destinations. Some seniors prefer shorter cruises or cruises that visit ports with easy access to attractions and historical sites. Pay attention to the ports of call and the activities available at each destination.
  • Cruise Size and Atmosphere: Determine whether you prefer a larger ship with more amenities or a smaller ship with a more intimate atmosphere. Larger ships often offer a wider range of onboard activities and entertainment, while smaller ships provide a quieter and more relaxed ambiance.
  • Cost and Value: Consider your budget and what you are getting for your money. Look for cruise lines that offer senior discounts, inclusive amenities, and package deals that provide value for money.

By taking these factors into account, you can narrow down your options and find a cruise line that aligns with your preferences and needs as a senior traveler. Now, let’s explore the top cruise lines that offer senior-friendly amenities and activities to ensure an unforgettable experience.

Next, let’s discuss health and safety considerations that are crucial for senior cruisers to ensure a worry-free vacation at sea.

Health and Safety Considerations for Senior Cruisers

Health and safety are paramount considerations for senior cruisers to ensure a smooth and enjoyable sailing experience. Here are some essential health and safety considerations for seniors planning a cruise:

  • Medical Facilities and Insurance: Before embarking on a cruise, it’s important for seniors to review the onboard medical facilities and services available. Most cruise lines have medical facilities staffed with trained medical professionals, but it’s advisable to carry travel insurance that covers any potential medical expenses during the cruise.
  • Medication Management: Seniors should ensure they have an ample supply of their required medications for the duration of the cruise. It’s also advisable to keep medications in their original containers and carry a copy of the prescription, in case of any unforeseen circumstances or emergencies.
  • Mobility Assistance: If seniors have limited mobility or require special assistance, it’s important to inform the cruise line in advance to make necessary arrangements. Cruise lines offer amenities such as accessible cabins, wheelchair ramps, and priority boarding to ensure a comfortable experience for seniors with mobility challenges.
  • Sanitary Practices: Following good hygiene practices is crucial for maintaining health and safety on a cruise. Seniors should frequently wash their hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizers available throughout the ship. It’s also important to avoid touching the face, especially before cleaning hands, to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Dietary Considerations: Informing the cruise line about any specific dietary needs, allergies, or restrictions is essential for seniors to ensure that their dining experience is safe and enjoyable. Cruise lines are well-equipped to accommodate various dietary preferences and restrictions, including gluten-free, vegetarian, or low-sodium options.
  • Staying Hydrated: It’s important for seniors to stay hydrated while on a cruise since spending time in the sun and being in air-conditioned environments can lead to dehydration. Drinking ample fluids, particularly water, is vital to prevent heat-related illnesses and maintain overall well-being.
  • Travel Vaccinations: Depending on the cruise itinerary, it’s advisable for seniors to consult with their healthcare provider to ensure they are up-to-date with necessary vaccinations for the destinations they will visit. Some countries may require specific vaccinations as a condition of entry, so it’s essential to take necessary precautions.

By considering these health and safety guidelines, senior cruisers can ensure a worry-free and enjoyable journey. It’s always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider before embarking on a cruise to assess your overall health and any specific considerations based on your medical history.

Choosing the best cruise line for seniors involves considering various factors such as accessibility, amenities, activities, and health and safety considerations. Fortunately, there are cruise lines that excel in providing senior-friendly experiences, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable journey for older travelers.

Cruise lines like Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Crystal Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, and Celebrity Cruises offer senior-friendly amenities, including accessible accommodations, wheelchair-friendly facilities, and a range of enriching activities. These cruise lines go above and beyond to cater to the needs and preferences of seniors, ensuring a memorable vacation experience.

For seniors with limited mobility, cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line provide accessible facilities and accommodations to ensure easy movement throughout the ship. These cruise lines also offer shore excursions with accessible transportation and facilities, allowing seniors to explore ports of call comfortably.

Cruise lines such as Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Cunard Line, Viking Ocean Cruises, Oceania Cruises, and Seabourn provide activities and entertainment geared towards seniors, offering enrichment programs, cultural experiences, and culinary delights to engage and entertain older passengers.

For seniors traveling solo, cruise lines like Norwegian Cruise Line, Cunard Line, and river cruises provide dedicated solo traveler accommodations and programs. These options allow solo seniors to enjoy their privacy while offering opportunities to meet and socialize with fellow travelers.

Health and safety considerations are paramount for senior cruisers. Checking medical facilities and carrying travel insurance, managing medications, practicing good hygiene, and informing the cruise line about dietary needs are vital for a safe and healthy cruise experience.

In conclusion, senior travelers have a plethora of options when it comes to choosing the best cruise line. By considering factors like accessibility, amenities, activities, and health and safety precautions, seniors can embark on a memorable cruise adventure that caters to their unique preferences and needs. So set sail and enjoy the incredible experiences awaiting you on the high seas!

Finding The Best Cruise Deals

best cruise deals

Ever wonder how to find the best cruise deals?  There are a lot of great resources out there, and we picked from some of our favorites to bring you a list of tips. According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) between 2003 and 2013, demand for cruising worldwide increased 77 percent , from 12 million to 21.3 million passengers. The CLIA says that “Florida remains the center of cruising in the United States, with its five cruise ports accounting for nearly 62 percent of all U.S. embarkations.”  Following Florida, are California, Texas, and New York (each had more than 600,000 embarkations).

How to Find the Best Cruise Deals

NBC News.com says:

  • Book during the January-through-March “wave period”.  This is “traditionally the cruise industry’s busiest booking period. During this time, cruise lines make about 35 percent of their annual sales”.
  • Call the cruise line directly as a first step (get a quote and ask if there are any special deals out there)
  • Check the cruise booking websites.
  • Call a travel agent.
  • Negotiate, Negotiate, Negotiate.
One thing to know before you meet with a local travel agent is that many charge consulting fees for their time with you. Like many independent travel agents, luxury cruise specialist Lucy Hirleman, president of Berkshire Travel in Newfoundland, N.J., charges new clients a $50 nonrefundable trip deposit fee. –NBC News.com

CruiseCritic.com says:

  • Look for last-minute cruising deals.  60-90 days to departure can be a treasure trove of last-minute travel deals
  • Be on the lookout for off-peak travel times (holidays are likely to have premium prices attached to them)
  • Be flexible
  • Take the car.  Taking the car means you won't be paying for last-minute airfares, and that can save you money too!
  • Access Military, Senior or Residency Rates. A number of cruise lines have special deals for seniors, military personnel and teachers.
Access Military, Senior or Residency Rates. A number of lines have special programs for seniors, military personnel and even teachers. Norwegian Cruise Line provides discounts to U.S. and Canadian military vets on select sailings. And for AARP members, it offers a 5 percent discount on any cruise booked at least nine months in advance. Holland America even goes so far as to offer discounts on select sailings to teachers, EMTs, firefighters, police officers and active military. Erik Elvejord, Holland America's director of public relations, told us that, while fares vary, they've typically been $50 to $100 below going rates. — Cruise Critic.com

Clark.com says:

  • Be flexible with your schedule.  When you're looking for cruise deals, make sure you look at the cost-by-week to take advantage of the best deals.
  • If you're buying your first cruise, don't buy online.  You should have someone helping you like a travel agent or a live cruise specialist. They'll ask you about your interests and recommend cruises that will fit your lifestyle.
  • Clark likes the cruise website VacationsToGo.com.  They offer a number of cruise deals to be had, and highlight deals on their site.  They also acknowledge discounts for seniors and others!
The number one rule right now about cruising is be flexible with your schedule. The week you go will control how much of your wallet you leave behind on the ship. The same exact cabin could cost you as little as a third one week what it might cost you the very next week. — Clark Howard.com

A Must-Have Packing List For Your Next Cruise

Norwegian Cruise Lines posted a great question on their Facebook Page today. They asked; “What's on your must-have cruise packing list?” Some of the answers are very funny, and some are very practical! Since many of you may be planning cruises this year or looking for other travel deals , we thought we'd post our favorites from that Norwegian Cruise Lines  must-have list for a cruise . These items (not necessarily in this order) are important to remember when you take to the high seas! Are you planning a cruise this year?

  • Reading Glasses
  • Flip Flops (sandals)
  • Extension Cord/Power Strip (adapter and/or 3 plug outlet)
  • A “Cover-Up”
  • Baseball Hat (sun hat)
  • iPad or Kindle Charger
  • Cross Body Purse (or backpack)
  • Dressy Shoes
  • Running or Athletic Shoes
  • Work Out Gear
  • Hair Clip (for the curtains if you want to take a nap during the day)
  • Anti-Nausea Meds (Dramamine?)
  • A Good Book (books)
  • A Camera (could be your phone)
  • Your Prescription Medicine (s)
  • Coffee Creamer (a lot of folks mentioned this – there's no creamer aboard?)

Safety Tips For Your Cruise

Beau Prichard from USA Today published a list of safety tips for beginners that are preparing for an upcoming cruise.  In the wake of the overturned Costa Concordia, and the crap-covered Carnival Triumph it's important to pay closer attention to emergency measures AND general safety precautions when getting ready for your “vacation aboard”.  Remember these safety tips for your cruise and have smoother sailing on your next vacation!

Best Safety Steps for Cruising

  • “ Pay close attention to your safety briefing ” – We've reached a point when you can't take anything for granted anymore.  You are responsible for you (and your family)… Pay close attention!
  • “ Take care of your health ” – Beau warns against using public restrooms, but if you wash your hands and practice good hygiene protocols this shouldn't be a problem.  We recommend that you try to get some exercise in during your cruise.  At least an hour per day should keep you feeling more alert, help with your sleep, and allow you guilt-free indulging.
  • “ Wear appropriate shoes ” – This one is obvious, but worth noting.  Ladies don't need to haul around 4 pairs of high-heels.  Get comfortable, and find yourself a quality pair of sandals, and be sure to bring some tennis shoes (or some quality walking/running shoes).
  • “ Leave valuables at home ” – Love this one… and frankly, it's a good rule-of-thumb for any travel (abroad or otherwise).  Unless you feel the need to show off (and it's OK if you do) leave the jewels at home in the safe.  Thieves and schemers love to prey on the naive and on the wealthy.  When they spot both (in one person) they know they've hit the mother-load!  IF you can afford to lose it, no big deal… but if you can't, better safe than sorry.  Just leave it at home.
  • “ Keep your money out of sight ” – See above (same applies).
  • “ Do not travel alone ” – There is safety in numbers.  Enough said.
  • “ Drink in moderation ” – This is a tough one because some folks want to cut loose when on a cruise.  Once you've reached the point where you can't drink responsibly you're at your limit, and it's best to back off.

There are so many more to mention that we'll be doing more of these lists in the future.  (Here's a preview… “Make sure you use that sunscreen!”)  If you have tips you'd like to share, please do so in the comments below.

The Ultimate Guide to the Best Senior Cruises

A couple enjoying their senior cruise

Cruising is the perfect vacation for “seniors” since it looks after so many travel logistics, from accommodations and meals, entertainment and activities, to pampering service. The biggest bonus is seeing different places without having to live out of a suitcase, sitting on coaches and staying at a different hotel every night. In short, cruising lets you see the world in superior comfort and style.  In this article we are going to break down the best cruise lines and the best destinations for those living in their golden years.

Best Cruise Lines for Seniors

Today there are countless ocean and river cruise lines plying the waterways of the world. All cruise lines provide identical services – transportation, accommodations, meals, entertainment, and activities. Where they differ are the level of liveliness, areas of specialty, and inclusiveness.

So what are the best cruise lines for seniors? Well, it depends on what your interests are. Here are our top picks:

1. Best for entertainment and activities

For seniors who are active and young at heart, these cruise lines will not disappoint.

Carnival Cruise Line

Known worldwide for their fun onboard experience, Carnival Cruise Line ships will keep your days occupied with fitness classes, spa treatments, art auctions, bingo, trivia, pool and deck games, and nights filled with stage shows, comedic acts, deck parties, casino games, and dancing. You’re guaranteed not to run out of things to do!

Royal Caribbean International

Operating some of the largest amenity-filled ships, Royal Caribbean leaves no stone unturned when it comes to entertainment and activity options. The cruise line is famous for its full-length Broadway shows such as Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Cats, and Grease, as well as water acrobatics and ice shows. Its newest vessels are outfitted with surfing and sky-diving simulators, zip lines, observation pods, rock climbing walls, and extensive pools and water slides.

2. Best for gastronomy

The following contenders offer culinary quality and variety that will satisfy the fussiest taste buds.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Boasting over 20 dining venues on many of its ships, your appetite will be well satisfied every day onboard a Norwegian Cruise Line voyage. Choose from international and continental cuisine in the main restaurant, buffet, pool grills, and casual eateries. And for something different, try Asian specialties including Teppanyaki and sushi, Brazilian steakhouse, Italian, French, Mexican, seafood, American diner, and even Texas Barbecue.

Oceania Cruises

In partnership with celebrity chef Jacques Pépin, Oceania Cruises takes cruise cuisine up a notch. In addition to the main dining room, four specialty restaurants featuring steaks, Asian, Italian, and French cuisine invite guests to indulge in a culinary journey. Special dinners include Wine Spectator and Dom Pérignon experiences. Take in cooking demonstrations and classes onboard, and chef-led culinary excursions ashore. Oceania also recently introduced a full line of plant-based menus onboard its fleet.

River Cruising

River cruising also provides a terrific culinary experience, as regional cuisine sourced from the freshest local ingredients are served throughout the voyage. Every meal is accompanied by a terrific selection of local wines and beers. Think Bavarian ales along the Rhine, exceptional vintages on the Bordeaux, and fine ports on the Douro.

3. Best for destination immersion

These two cruise lines offer guests a chance to explore the far reaches of the world.

An Azamara cruise includes visits to off-the-beaten-path ports and excursions that delve deeply into local history and culture. Highlights include late and overnight stays that allow you to linger and take in the atmosphere long after other ships have departed, and an AzAmazing Evening excursion that takes you to an exclusive locale for a private touring experience. Azamara also features country-intensive itineraries such as Japan, Croatia, Iceland, New Zealand, and more.

Holland America Line

Holland America offers the Exploration Central (EXC) program through multimedia presentations and lectures, unique shore excursions, photography lessons, and even a “port to table” culinary experience all designed to deepen your understanding of the places you visit. The 1200-guest Maasdam is the cruise line’s meandering globetrotter, bringing guests to exotic destinations with a team of field experts onboard, and zodiac boats for close-up encounters.

4. Best for education and personal enrichment

If you’re looking for extra learning experiences, these cruise lines offer a tremendous choice for all interests.

Cunard Line

Cunard offers a wealth of enrichment through the Cunard Insights program. A rotating roster of experts includes personalities in broadcasting, filmmakers, historians, authors and more, conducting lectures, Q&A sessions and mingling with guests during the cruise. Fascinating topics range from politics, art history, and astronomy, to oceanography, forensic medicine, intelligence and espionage. Cunard also has an artist in residence, and the onboard library boasts thousands of volumes and reference materials. A collection of themed cruises focusing on a variety of interests is also scheduled every year.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Called “A Thinking Person’s Cruise”, a voyage onboard Viking Ocean Cruises is inspiring and educational. In addition to guest lecturers, Viking also employs resident historians onboard to enhance your experience through small group and one-on-one interactions. It also has its own cooking school where you can learn to master your skills and hunt for local ingredients with the chef ashore. Additional partners for onboard programming include TED Talks, the Met Opera, the Oslo Munch Museum, and more.

5. The Best of the Best

For seniors looking for the ultimate pampering vacation, where the accommodations, service, and cuisine are second to none, consider a luxury, all-inclusive cruise line, where your ticket includes lavish suite accommodations, fine dining, premium beverages, and crew gratuities.

Crystal Cruises

Operating ocean, river, yachting, and coming soon – expedition cruising, Crystal Cruises has been voted “World’s Best” by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler and Travel & Leisure 25 years in a row. Crystal excels in intuitive yet unobtrusive service, with a high crew-to-guest ratio.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

The only cruise line to include airfare, transfers, and unlimited shore excursions at every port, Regent Seven Seas ranks as the most inclusive of the luxury lines. Cruises departing from outside of North America also include business class airfare.

Seabourn Cruises

Champagne and caviar flow freely onboard Seabourn’s intimate yachts, carrying no more than 600 guests. Seabourn sails to all seven continents, enhanced with partnerships such as master chef Thomas Keller, wellness guru Dr. Andrew Weil, and lyricist Sir Tim Rice, to curate the onboard cuisine and programming.

Silversea Cruises

Slightly more formal than the others, Silversea sails to over 900 destinations worldwide. Highlights of a Silversea cruise experience include butler service in every suite and a selection of fine dining restaurants. Silversea also offers luxury expeditions to the Galapagos, Arctic, and Antarctica.

Best cruise destinations for seniors

Here are the top 5 cruise destinations that we feel are perfectly suited for seniors.

1. Cruises to the Sun

For Seniors who are snowbirds, cruises to warm places are always a winner. The Caribbean remains the most popular of all sun destinations. On the Pacific side, cruises to the Mexican Riviera make for a great getaway. Or take a cruise through the Panama Canal, or sail to the Hawaiian Islands.

2. European River Cruising

Imagine exploring some of Europe’s most iconic cities along the banks of scenic rivers, while enjoying regional cuisine, wines, and local hospitality. River ships dock in the heart of the cities and villages, allowing for easy sightseeing and exploration. Complimentary tours showcase the highlights of each town, with ample free time to wander and explore on your own. Each evening, return to your river vessel to enjoy a gourmet cooked-to-order meal and wake up to the next wonderful city. River cruises are convenient, comfortable, and much easier than any coach tour!

3. Cruises to Asia

Cruising is a great way to travel to Asia, as your floating resort transports you from country to country, without the need to travel through foreign airports or fuss with language issues. The exotic locales and cultures – from China and Japan to Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia – can be experienced on a multi-week holiday, as most ships move throughout the region during the entire season.

4. Expedition Cruising

Expedition cruising appeals to seniors because these voyages are on small, intimate ships of less than 300 guests, and present a wealth of learning opportunity and discovery in otherwise unreachable lands. Whether it’s a journey to the Polar region, the deep Amazon, or the biodiverse Galapagos, expedition cruising brings you up close and personal with the sights, flora, and fauna of the remote regions. It’s a great combination of soft adventure and personal enrichment, and well-appointed vessels ensure your journey to the ends of the earth without sacrificing on comfort and amenities.

5. World Cruises

For those who have the time, a world cruise or extended voyage is a perfect way to cross off your must-see destinations on one trip. Typically 100+ days in length, world cruises depart every January and circumnavigate the globe, some hitting every continent. Extended voyages typically range from 30-60 days, visiting a specific region such as circumnavigation of South America or Australia, are also available.

I hope you find this guide useful and now you feel ready to choose your next cruise destination. Whether you’re travelling with you partner, family, friends or solo, there’s a cruise line out there that will cater to your travel needs.

From easygoing river voyages to elegant ocean sailings to enrichment heavy expedition journeys or exciting globe-spanning World Cruises, a cruise vacation is the perfect way for seniors to visit multiple destinations while maximizing your travel dollar.

Comfortable, convenient and extremely cost-effective, cruises are a safe and stylish way for seniors to see the world with like-minded travelers and be pampered along the way. Whatever your mobility level, a cruise provides the perfect balance of full independence and accessible support while venturing out on your own.

Seniors enjoying a Viking Cruise

Of course, the list of reasons to go on a cruise is long, making that part of the decision an easy one. With so many choices to choose from though, the hard part might be deciding which cruise line is right for you.

To help narrow down the choices, our experts have selected some of the top cruises for seniors wanting to travel in style.

Luxury Cruise Lines

Today's luxury liners rival most 5-star hotels and are ideal for active seniors and those at the upper end of the age spectrum, including limited-mobility passengers, and most have been built specifically to cater to a more discerning, mature crowd.

Oceania's private veranda

Today's luxury ships feature exotic itineraries , engaging onboard activities and elegant ship designs that include easily accessible passageways throughout, wheelchair assistance for embarkation and debarkation and an array of stylish staterooms with state-of-the-art handicap-friendly layouts.

Cunard Line

Classic yet contemporary, Cunard Line is a nostalgic voyage harkening back to cruising's heyday. From authentic British-style afternoon tea to enrichment programs including thought-provoking lectures and talks by well-known personalities, and even a full-scale planetarium, Cunard is all about recreating the "Golden Age" of ocean liner cruising.

The elegant main areas on Cunard ships harken back to cruising's storied history.

Crystal Cruises takes high-end cruising to a whole new level and are considered the standard-bearer for excellence in luxury - by ocean, by river and by yacht. Crystal's elegant ships boast high passenger-to-guest ratio making their service second-to-none and providing guests with more pampering and more programming than most other luxury lines. Onboard their all-inclusive voyages, passengers can partake in art classes, guest lectures, cooking demonstrations, afternoon tea, wine tastings, bridge lessons, and a variety of fitness and wellness programs.

Insider Tip: Cunard and Crystal are among the few senior-friendly cruise lines to provide mature singles the chance to dance, mingle and schmooze with their "gentleman hosts" or "Ambassadors" - distinguished men who entertain guests and dance nightly with unescorted female passengers.

Called "the thinking persons cruise line", Viking Cruises understands the difference between a tourist and a traveler. They truly cater to adults and "no frills" cruisers with their policies of no kids, no casinos, no umbrella drinks and never any sales pressure to purchase needless services, spa packages or specialty items.

If you prefer traveling alongside a distinguished, older clientele, spending more time in each port and enjoying an inclusive cruise experience complete with world-class dining and thoughtfully curated shore excursions, Viking is the perfect choice for you.

River Cruises

Elegant small ships with wide-open vantage points (and without the crowds) that offer a safe, smooth journey through the world's most iconic destinations are just some of the reasons why scenic river cruising is the perfect experience for seniors.

AmaWaterways

With friendly and knowledgeable service, fewer guests on board, uniquely personalized experiences both on and off the ship and French balconies with floor-to-ceiling sliding-glass doors in the majority of their spacious cabins, AmaWaterways is one of the best river cruise experiences for mature travelers.

Themed, solo and group cruises also make this one of the top options for foodies, wine lovers, history buffs and educated travelers looking to immerse themselves in truly exotic destinations.

AmaWaterways open-air dining room

The dining venues on AmaWaterways ships offer dramatic views during meals.

Regularly topping most "best of" lists in the upscale river cruise category, Uniworld boasts world-class cuisine, unmatched service, great enrichment opportunities and top-notch local entertainers brought onboard regularly. European river cruises are a favorite for history buffs and even WW II veterans as their itineraries visit Europe's most famous cities , sites, towns and landmarks throughout France, Germany, Austria, Hungary and more.

Insider Tip: If you have major mobility issues, a river cruise might not be right for you as there can be some limitations such as a lack of elevators or accessibility throughout some ships, challenges of getting on and off the ship while in-port and any logistical issues related to changing water levels.

Contemporary options.

Widely considered one of the best vacation values available and with wide variety of luxurious options, a contemporary cruise is typically a larger ship packed with more activities, services, restaurants and options than any other type of cruise. See the world in absolute style while you relax and unwind with no packing or unpacking, no worrying about missing connecting flights and no extra transportation costs.

Princess Cruises

As far as "mass-market" cruising goes, Princess is an excellent option when it comes to cruises for seniors, especially those with disabilities, as there are plenty of wheelchair-accessible lifts throughout their ships and some ships like the Ruby Princess have dozens of wheelchair accessible cabins, including inside, ocean view, balcony and suite options.

Norwegian makes our list of top cruise lines for seniors thanks to their affordable fares, frequent senior deals and their Freestyle Cruising options - a uniquely NCL concept that allows guests to dine whenever, wherever and however they want without the need to rush back from a shore excursion or worrying about making the show that evening.

If you're on a budget, Norwegian regularly releases new cruise specials exclusively for seniors ages 55 and older, so ask our experts what's currently available.

Insider Tip: Norwegian's Pride of America is one of their many ships that provide wheelchair accessible rooms and scooter rentals to make it easier for seniors and disabled passengers to get around on board.

Holland america line.

Holland America Line is a great choice for seniors of any mobility level, but they are the best at offering accessible experiences for guests with disabilities, even honored by Porthole Cruise Magazine as the No. 1 cruise line overall in accommodating physically challenged passengers. These mobility-friendly ships even include a specially designed lift system for tender transfers.

Insider Tip: Holland America's Vista Class ships feature 28 accessible rooms, and all cruises include wheelchair assistance at both embarkation and departure.

Plan Your Senior Cruise With AAA.

Cruising is a vacation experience that is universally loved — but seniors often find that they’re looking for something a little bit different out of their voyages. Cruises for seniors tend to be quieter, more intimate and, in many ways, more engaging, with a plethora of activities to participate in.

Those who are looking into cruising as a senior have different priorities. Whether you are hoping to book a cruise for single seniors, or embarking on a retirement celebration, you will want to keep the following in mind:

  • Choose a cruise line that caters to adult travelers. Many of the larger, more well-known cruise lines appeal to families, young travelers or large groups, which can give them a lively or raucous atmosphere. By prioritizing a cruise line that focuses on adult travelers, you are going to find a ship that offers the dynamic you crave.
  • Select a cruise line that goes out of its way to accommodate all types of travelers, regardless of their needs. Cruise lines that include mobility assistance or personalized accommodation will be able to provide you with the best possible experience.
  • Focus on cruise lines that offer cultural experiences and immersive destinations. For many seniors, cruising is a convenient and comfortable way to see the world and they are often looking to visit ports of call that allow them to broaden their horizons.
  • Look for cruise lines that specialize in low-impact adventures. You are not limited by your age, but you may need to be more mindful about the types of excursions and activities that you enjoy during your cruise.

In order to take a comprehensive look at the top cruises for seniors and to understand the offerings that would best align with your personal needs for your trip, you should consider booking your voyage with a cruise travel agent who specializes in senior cruises. An experienced cruise travel agent will be able to match you with the perfect cruising experience and secure you the best possible package for your adventure.

These are the cruise lines that are considered to be the best options for senior travelers:

Seniors who are looking to check off those bucket list destinations will find their selections to be inviting, with trips to Australia, Africa and the Panama Canal available.

Multigenerational Cruises

Multigenerational cruises are a great way for seniors to bond with their children and grandchildren. Whether you’re the matriarch or patriarch of your family, it’s time to start planning this trip that your entire family will remember for the rest of their lives.

Cruises for seniors over 60 who are traveling with children and grandchildren should have a wide range of activities to appease all ages. This will help to get all your family members excited for the cruise, too.

Choose cruise ships with kids and teen clubs as well as separate adult-only areas on the ship. An onboard spa is great for the ladies (or men) of the family to bond while getting a rejuvenating massage or other treatment, while a pool will get the kids excited. And that’s just the start. There are so many different things to do on a cruise ship that there’s no end in sight for the fun your family can have on this very special bucket list cruise for seniors.

Instead, you can sail away for weeks on end. We offer itineraries that are two to three weeks long and take you around some of the most exciting and exotic locations in the world.

Get away for 15 nights on a Best of India & Southeast Asia cruise that takes you to the wonders of Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore as well as the vibrant cities along the western India, such as Mumbai and Goa.

Another one of our longer bucket list cruises for seniors over 60 to add to their repertoire is an Arabian Sea and Suez Canal cruise. Experience the most beautiful parts of the Middle East before sailing through Egypt along the Suez Canal and finishing your cruise in the Mediterranean.

Extend your vacation even longer with a fun City Stay in San Diego during which you can explore the historic Gaslamp Quarter, dine at beachfront restaurants, and enjoy the antics of animals at the San Diego Zoo.

Dreaming of Europe? Get away to Spain, Italy, and the Canary Islands on a  transatlantic cruise  itinerary that sails through the region while your ship travels between Florida and Rome.

A 15-night transatlantic cruise typically starts with seven days crossing the Atlantic Ocean before arriving to Tenerife, where you can easily tick off your list of things to do in the Canary Islands . You will spend two more days at sea before stopping in Mediterranean ports like Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona, Provence, Florence, and Rome.

For an itinerary that will truly let you unwind and relax, book our 19-night Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Hawaii cruises. You’ll sail across the Pacific between Sydney or Melbourne in Australia, and Honolulu, Hawaii, stopping at the beautiful islands of French Polynesia along the way plus have ports of call in New Zealand.

Cruises For Seniors Over 60 Who Have Been There, Done That

Here are a couple ideas:

If you missed the era of backpacking through Southeast Asia as a youth, fear not – you can still explore the wonders of Southeast Asia, but don’t need to worry about rowdy hostels. Instead you’ll be exploring this gorgeous region of the world in style and comfort when you cruise there. Our Southeast Asia cruise itineraries  sail to beloved Southeast Asia destinations like Halong Bay (via Hanoi) and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand, and alluring Singapore.

Looking for somewhere totally off the grid? Head to the Galapagos Islands, located off the coast of Ecuador. Turn this into even more of an enviable bucket list cruise by booking your Galapagos cruise on  Celebrity Flora , the new all-suite ship that was specifically designed for the Galapagos Islands.

If you haven’t made it to Machu Picchu yet, you can also add a land excursion to Machu Picchu into your  Galapagos Vacation Package .

Cruise in an Edge-Class Suite

Bucket list worthy cruises for seniors over 60 don’t have to be just destination related. Consider the mode of transportation as well and where you’ll be residing on the ship.

On our new  Celebrity Edge ship  (and subsequent Edge-class ships) you’ll be able to travel like you never have before by booking yourself into one of our incredible suites, like the Edge Villas or Iconic Suites.

The incredible Edge Villas have a loft bedroom over the spacious living area. Every part of the suite overlooks the ocean from the two-story windows. Step outside onto your expansive terrace where you will find a plunge pool and comfortable lounge seating. Making the Edge Villas even more spectacular is that they have a second entrance that connects right into the Retreat, an exclusive area just for Suite Class guests with its own pool area, bar, and sun deck, and lounge.

If you’d prefer a luxurious suite that doesn’t have stairs, check into one of the Iconic Suites, the largest suites on board which have a massive outdoor living space with a sun bed, hot tub, and lounge seating.

How to Choose The Best Cruise Lines for Adults

Choosing the best cruise lines for adults can make all the difference in your vacation experience. Here are some tips to help you select the right cruise line for your needs:

  • Determine Your Budget : Before you start looking for a cruise line, decide on your budget. Cruise lines vary in price, so it’s important to know how much you can afford to spend before you begin your search.
  • Consider Your Interests : Look for a cruise line that offers activities and entertainment that cater to your interests. If you’re a foodie, look for a cruise line with gourmet dining options. If you’re interested in history, look for a cruise line that offers educational excursions.
  • Decide on a Destination : Consider the destination you want to visit and choose a cruise line that offers that itinerary. Some cruise lines specialize in certain regions, such as the Caribbean, Europe, or Asia.
  • Research the Ship : Check out the ship’s amenities, cabins, and dining options to ensure they meet your needs and preferences. Some cruise lines offer more upscale amenities, while others focus on a more relaxed, casual atmosphere.
  • Read Reviews : Research online reviews from past passengers to get an idea of the overall experience of the cruise line. Look for reviews that specifically mention adult-oriented activities and the ship’s atmosphere.
  • Check for Adult-Only Options : Make sure to check if the cruise line offers adult options. Some cruise lines may offer specific adult-only cruises or have areas of the ship designated for adults only.

By considering these tips, you can choose the best cruise for adult needs and preferences, ensuring a relaxing and enjoyable adult-only vacation experience.

Tips for Planning an Adult Cruise Vacation

Planning an adult cruise vacation can be exciting, but it’s important to make sure you’ve covered all the bases. Here are some tips to help you plan a successful cruise vacation:

  • Choose the Right Time : Consider the best time of year to take your cruise, based on your budget, schedule, and destination. Look for special offers or promotions to help save money.
  • Select the Right Ship : Consider the size, amenities, and atmosphere of the ship to ensure it fits your preferences. Check for specific areas or cruises to ensure a more relaxed and refined atmosphere.
  • Book Early : Book your cruise early to ensure you get the best deals and preferred accommodations. Popular cruises and cabins can sell out quickly, so don’t wait too long to make your reservations.
  • Plan Your Activities : Research the ship’s activities and entertainment options to plan your daily itinerary. Consider activities that cater to your interests, such as fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, or wine tastings.
  • Pack Appropriately : Consider the dress code for the ship and any shore excursions you plan to take. Some cruises may have a more formal dress code for certain nights or dining venues. Don’t forget to pack any necessary medications or travel documents.
  • Budget for Extras : Plan to budget for extras, such as gratuities, alcoholic beverages, and excursions. Look for any package deals or promotions to help save money on these extras.

Coast Guard calls off search for man, 20, who jumped overboard on cruise in front of family

Coast Guard calls off search for man, 20, who jumped overboard on cruise in front of family

Fellow passengers of the royal caribbean cruise have recalled the horror behind the ‘surreal’ incident.

The US Coast Guard has called off the search for the 20-year-old who is said to have jumped overboard from a cruise ship.

The young man is believed to have ‘jumped off’ Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas in front of his family, who were left looking on ‘helplessly’.

Fellow passengers recalled how there had been ‘a lot of yelling’ as the crew were alerted to the ‘surreal’ incident.

The ship had been sailing between Cuba and the Bahamas' Grand Inagua Island on Thursday 4 April when the man went overboard, at around 4.00am.

Cruise line brand Royal Caribbean later confirmed a search was underway for the passenger, saying in a statement to the New York Post: "The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search.

“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

However, the US Coast Guard has now confirmed the search has been called off, telling LADbible Group in a statement: “The Coast Guard has suspended its search for the 20-year-old pending the development of new information.”

One of the ship’s passengers, Bryan Sims, explained how he’d been hanging out with the 20-year-old and his brother in the hot tub until about 3.30pm.

"It was standing room only,” he said during an interview with the New York Post.

“He sat right beside me the whole time.

“He was pretty drunk.”

Sims continued: “As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess.

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now'. And he jumped out the window in front of us all.”

He added: "It was insane. It was just surreal.”

Amy Phelps Fouse said Royal Caribbean had been ’excellent’ at communicating updates with those on board, asking people to ‘act with compassion’ in light of the ‘tragic situation’.

“The early morning was definitely sombre as so many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person,” she said, with third passenger Deborah Morrison also telling the outlet: “There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately.

“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

LADbible Group contacted Royal Caribbean for comment.

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's 2 largest cruise ships. They were shockingly similar for the $1,000 difference

  • Royal Caribbean operates many of the cruise industry's biggest ships.
  • Icon of the Seas  launched in January, dethroning its predecessor, Wonder of the Seas, as the world's largest.
  • Here's how the two mega-ships compare in size, neighborhoods, amenities, dining, cabins, and costs.

Insider Today

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's new mega-cruise ship darling, was deemed a success before it was even built.

In January, the highly anticipated vessel — complete with more than 40 bars and restaurants, a six-slide waterpark, and a waterfall — set sail, dethroning its less than two-year-old precursor, the Wonder of the Seas , as the world's largest cruise ship.

Before its debut, Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, had already repeatedly called Icon its "best-selling product" yet. The company experienced its largest booking day ever when reservations opened for Icon of the Seas more than a year before its launch, it said

Despite all of this fanfare, you might be surprised by how similar it is to its predecessor.

I've sailed on both ships. Let's see how Icon and Wonder compare in six categories: size, neighborhoods, amenities, dining, cabins, and costs.

Both ships stunt the size of their competitors.

best cruise line for elderly

Wonder of the Seas debuted in 2022 as the then-world's largest cruise liner, measuring 235,600 gross-tons, 1,188 feet-long, and 18 decks-tall. The ship can accommodate up to 9,288 people, including 2,204 crew.

Icon of the Seas is, comparatively, 13,063 gross-tons heavier, eight feet longer, and two decks taller. It can sail up to 9,950 people, including 2,350 crew, although it's 52 feet less wide than its predecessor.

Both vessels feel more like amusement parks than traditional cruise ships.

best cruise line for elderly

Royal Caribbean invited me on complimentary, non-revenue sailings on both ships: two nights on Wonder in late 2022 and three nights on Icon in January.

I spent most of my time lost, overwhelmed, and exhausted.

It's no surprise both ships are operating weeklong itineraries this year. Any less, and you might not have time to experience all the activities and restaurants on your list.

Like other Royal Caribbean ships, Wonder and Icon have eight 'neighborhoods' that serve separate purposes.

best cruise line for elderly

The new ship shares three of Wonder of the Seas' neighborhoods : Central Park, Royal Promenade, and Suite.

Icon's other five — Thrill Island , Surfside, Hideaway, Chill Island, and AquaDome — are a first for the cruise line.

Many of the ships' amenities overlap, but in differing quantities.

best cruise line for elderly

Wonder has three waterslides. Icon has a six-slide waterpark complete with rafting and racing options.

Both have increasingly popular cruise amenities like decks-long dry slides, mini-golf courses, rock climbing walls, and playgrounds.

But instead of Wonder of the Seas' zipline , Icon of the Seas has Crown's Edge, a thrilling agility course with a small zipline that leaves travelers dangling 154 feet above the ocean.

Wonder’s Boardwalk neighborhood was my go-to.

best cruise line for elderly

Boardwalk delivered exactly as it had promised: an open-air space grounded by wood-planked floors, a hot dog stand, a sweets store, and kitschy, colorful decor.

Icon of the Seas' Surfside , designed for families with young children, felt like its closest dupe.

Both neighborhoods had a carousel, an outdoor playground, and family-friendly dining. But Surfside was more toddler-friendly, as suggested by the children's water play area and nighttime story readings.

On to entertainment: Both mega-ships have ice skating performances and exciting multi-disciplinary shows at the AquaTheater.

best cruise line for elderly

But travelers who enjoy musicals at sea will want to stick to Icon.

Unlike its predecessor, the new ship shows a rendition of Broadway hit "The Wizard of Oz" — Munchkins, a puppet Toto, and a 16-piece live band included.

The layout of Icon's amenities were better than its cousin.

best cruise line for elderly

Some of Wonder of the Seas' enticing outdoor amenities — like the surf simulator, zipline, and mini-golf course — are clustered on the deck above and away from the pools and water slides.

This layout might be difficult for parents with children who bounce from one activity to the next. Wouldn't it be easier to have all of these outdoor extras near each other, or at least on the same deck, for parental supervision purposes?

This is where Icon of the Seas excelled: All its exciting open-air activities were adjacent.

best cruise line for elderly

The rows of pools flowed perfectly into Thrill Island's waterpark , rock climbing walls, mini-golf course, and Crown's Edge.

The best part? The adult-only Hideaway — which flexes an infinity pool club with a DJ — is right behind Thrill Island, creating a clear separation between parents and their children without being too far from each other.

'Free' options like the buffet and build-your-own tacos and burritos bar are available on both ships.

best cruise line for elderly

But you won't find the larger vessel's five-stall food hall or mini-golf-adjacent finger food stand on Wonder.

As expected, Icon of the Seas has more dining options than its predecessor, although there are some overlaps.

best cruise line for elderly

Wonder of the Seas has 11 bars and 21 dining venues (9 complimentary and 12 upcharged).

Icon of the Seas has eight more bars, four more complimentary restaurants, and three more specialty dining choices.

Nor will you find the new ship’s plush $200-a-person Empire Supper Club on any other cruise liner.

best cruise line for elderly

The multi-course dinner, paired with cocktails and live music, stunts the cost of either vessel's other dinner options.

But if you love Johnny Rockets, you’ll be disappointed by Icon of the Seas.

best cruise line for elderly

Restaurants like the popular burger chain and Southern comfort-inspired Mason Jar are only on Wonder of the Seas. Fine by me: My fried chicken at Mason Jar was as dry as a desert.

The younger ship doesn't have Wonder's robot bartender-armed bar either. It does, however, have new watering holes with dueling pianos and live jazz.

Surprisingly, Wonder of the Seas has 65 more cabins than its new cousin.

best cruise line for elderly

But several of Icon's 28 stateroom categories are a first for the cruise line.

This includes the new family infinite balcony cabin, which has a small bunk bed nook for children.

Royal Caribbean assigned me an ocean-view balcony stateroom on both ships.

best cruise line for elderly

My Wonder of the Seas' cabin was 20 square-feet smaller than the one on Icon. But my bathroom on the latter was so tiny, I accidentally elbowed the walls at almost every turn.

Sailing on the world's largest cruise ship doesn't mean you'll have the world's largest cabin after all.

Wonder and Icon are both operating seven-night roundtrip itineraries from Florida to the Caribbean.

best cruise line for elderly

In 2024, Wonder of the Seas is scheduled for year-round sailings from Port Canaveral to the Caribbean and Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , starting at $700 per person.

Icon of the Seas is spending its first year in service operating nearly identical itineraries but from Miami instead. The cheapest 2024 option is $1,786 per person.

That's a difference of more than $125 per person per day.

"Bookings and pricing for Icon of the Seas can only be described as 'iconic,'" Naftali Holtz, the CFO of Royal Caribbean Group, told analysts in February.

Icon of the Seas’ name speaks for itself.

best cruise line for elderly

If your family is looking for a jam-packed kid-friendly cruise with enough amenities to stay entertained for a week, both ships are a great option.

But if you're a seasoned mega-ship-cruiser looking to experience something new, Icon of the Seas is your best bet.

They may be similar, but no other behemoth cruise liner has a waterpark for children and a pool club for adults just dozens of feet from each other.
