10 Best Value Luxury Rwanda Safari Lodges & Camps

10 Best Value Luxury Rwanda Safari Lodges & Camps

Philip is a renowned Africa expert and author of the Bradt guidebook to Rwanda.

Rwanda is one of Africa’s most exciting and fastest developing ecotourism destinations. It is best known for the opportunity to go gorilla trekking in the forested Virunga slopes protected in Volcanoes National Park. Other wildlife attractions include chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park and the more conventional Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) safari territory of Akagera National Park.

Not that long ago, accommodation here was uniformly rather basic, but these days the country boasts an excellent choice of luxury properties, and here we pick 10 of our favorite Rwanda lodges and camps.

The accommodations below are not ranked in a specific quality order.

1. Mantis Akagera Game Lodge, Akagera NP

Mantis Akagera Game Lodge

The only non-tented accommodation available in the eponymous national park, Akagera Game Lodge is a 60-room property that stands on a hilltop offering sweeping views over Lake Ihema. The oldest lodge in Rwanda, it was originally built in the 1970s and experienced several ups and downs prior to being taken over by the upmarket Mantis Collection in 2017. Architecturally it feels like a bit of a throwback, but the current management has overhauled the decor to give rooms and public areas an appealing contemporary African feel. Amenities include a refreshing swimming pool, tennis courts, large manicured grounds alive with birds, and a varied menu of guided activities. This Mantis property is highly recommended to first-time safari-goers who would be uncomfortable sleeping under canvas in Big Five territory.

2. Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, Musanze

Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel

Named after the five volcanic Virunga peaks that lie partly within Rwanda, this well-run boutique lodge is a popular base with upmarket gorilla trekking tours. It has a convenient location on the northern outskirts of Musanze, alongside the main road to Volcanoes National Park. The 10 spacious rooms and suites are built with locally sourced lava stone and come with walk-in nets and private verandas. The attractive gardens are centered on a large free-form swimming pool and overlooked by a characterful terrace restaurant serving excellent Indian-inspired cuisine.

3. Ruzizi Tented Lodge, Akagera NP

Ruzizi Tented Lodge

This fabulous tented camp stands in a dense patch of lakeside woodland abutting Lake Ihema in the far south of Akagera. You’re certain to hear hippos grunting merrily in the lake at night, and it’s a great base for boat trips and game drives in search of the Big Five and other wildlife. The standing tents are very well equipped and spaced widely along the shore to ensure maximum privacy. It is also a highly rewarding spot for bird-watchers, and the breakfast terrace is ideally positioned for watching the sun rise over the lake.

4. Wilderness Magashi, Akagera NP

Wilderness Magashi

For Rwanda’s most exclusive bush experience, look no further than Wilderness Magashi. This intimate luxury camp comprises just six spacious and stylishly decorated standing tents, each of which is set on a stilted wooden platform and has a private balcony overlooking Lake Rwanyakazinga. What makes Magashi stand out, however, is that guests have exclusive access to a 6,000-hectare private concession that offers some of Akagera’s best wildlife viewing. Guided game drives here routinely throw up quality elephant, lion and black rhino sightings, while boat trips on Lake Rwanyakazinga can be rewarding for leopards, which here have the unusual habit of catching fish from the shore.

5. Wilderness Bisate, Volcanoes NP

Wilderness Bisate

Our favorite lodge in the vicinity of Volcanoes National Park is Wilderness Bisate, which consists of just six exclusive villas spaced widely on a 43-hectare hill only 400m/1,300ft from the park boundary. The imaginative design of the spacious twin-domed villas represents a fascinating contemporary take on traditional Rwandan architecture, and makes ample use of local materials such as lava stone, hand-fired bricks, wood and thatch. The views across to the volcanic outline of nearby Mt Bisoke are superb, and a nature trail around an eroded crater rim offers great birding. A rewilding project involving the planting of more than 60,000 indigenous highland trees has encouraged the return of wildlife to the lodge grounds. Occasional visitors include elephant, buffalo, golden monkey and even mountain gorilla.

6. Virunga Lodge, Volcanoes NP

Virunga Lodge

Hilltop Virunga Lodge was one of the first luxury properties to open in the vicinity of Volcanoes National Park, and it remains another favorite. Its most memorable feature is undoubtedly the magnificent panoramic views, which take in four of the Virunga Volcanoes along with Lakes Burera and Ruhondo. Guests are accommodated in attractive stone-and-wood chalets with private verandas. Virunga Lodge is significantly farther than other luxury lodges from the meeting point for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, but the staff are used to organizing early wake-up calls and breakfast.

Virunga Lodge Tours

7. Wilderness Sabyinyo, Volcanoes NP

Wilderness Sabyinyo

One of the most luxurious Rwandan lodges, Wilderness Sabyinyo is also notable in that it operates in collaboration with a local community association that owns the land on which it stands. Bordering Volcanoes National Park, the rehabilitated grounds stand at a chilly altitude of 2,500m/8,200ft below Mt Sabyinyo, a dormant volcano whose peak forms the three-way border between Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The well-equipped stone cottages are attractively decorated in traditional Rwandan style, while log fires keep guests warm at night. Wilderness Sabyinyo is highly recommended to those who want to be sure their visit to Rwanda benefits the local people, as rates include a substantial community levy.

8. One&Only Nyungwe House, Nyungwe NP

One&Only Nyungwe House

Far and away the most prestigious and costly lodge serving Nyungwe National Park, One&Only Nyungwe House stands in a pretty tea estate scattered with relict forest patches inhabited by a wealth of monkeys and birds. The spacious chalets combine an organic wooden feel with modern amenities such as air-conditioning, television, hot tub and private balcony. There is also a heated infinity pool, a spa and mountain biking. If you’re looking for a super-luxurious base for chimp trekking and other activities in Nyungwe, this is the obvious choice.

One&Only Nyungwe House Tours

9. Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel, Nyungwe NP

Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel

Although it doesn’t pretend to match the nearby One&Only in terms of unbridled luxury, this comfortable and welcoming lodge is easily the best option in Nyungwe for visitors on a more restricted budget. Its best feature is a spectacular hilltop setting offering stunning views east over the vast rainforest and west towards Lake Kivu. Accommodation is in large stone chalets, all of which have a sitting room with fireplace and a private balcony. Meals are taken in a circular two-story traditional-style building with a tall thatched roof.

Top View Hill Hotel Tours

10. Forest of Hope Guesthouse, Gishwati-Mukura NP

Forest of Hope Guesthouse

It doesn’t get much more exclusive than the Forest of Hope Guesthouse. This two-bedroom property is the only accommodation servicing Rwanda’s newest national park, whose Gishwati sector effectively operates as a private concession for the exclusive use of overnight guests. The setting, on a grassy hilltop overlooking Gishwati Forest and the more distant peaks of the Virunga Volcanoes, is absolutely stunning. Guided walks come with a good chance of encountering chimps, golden monkeys, l’Hoest’s monkeys and a variety of colorful forest birds. Accommodation here arguably doesn’t quite nudge into the luxury category, but the lodge is very comfortable and well run, and the exclusivity of the experience is a luxury in itself.

The Best Luxury Lodges in Rwanda

In recent years, Rwanda has become an emerging destination for American travelers, thanks to its growing mountain gorilla population, classic savanna wildlife experiences, and quickly evolving capital city of Kigali. It’s also become a haven of world-class lodgings. Read on for our AFAR picks of the best luxury lodges for your next trip.

Volcanoes National Park

In the northwestern part of the country, Volcanoes National Park is home to more than a third of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas; it’s also the site of some of Rwanda’s most luxurious stays.

Singita Kwitonda Lodge

Best for : families and groups who want to stick together

Highlight: The exclusive-use, four-room Kataza House villa, which comes with its own private chef, butler, and experiences manager.

Book now: singita.com

The only thing better than cinematic views of Volcanoes National Park from your private villa? Enjoying those mist-shrouded peaks from a heated plunge pool next to a roaring fire. Leave it to Singita , a benchmark setter for luxury safari lodges, to find an unparalleled location for the company’s latest retreat. (As far as properties go, it’s the closest you can get to the national park.) The eight stand-alone rooms, with their soaring ceilings and picture windows facing the Sabinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura volcanoes, take inspiration from the local landscape (volcanic stone walls; hand-fired terra-cotta brick) and pair it with an earthy palette of grays and greens.

The same aesthetic dominates the light-filled, indoor-outdoor dining room, where chef Alice Wilhelm works her magic with small plates that feel indulgent and healthy at the same time (Musanze mushroom risotto; ginger caramel chicken with avocado). Her husband, lodge sommelier and F&B manager James Burnham-King, ensures you’re pairing her dishes with the best wines on the African continent (a Stellenrust cab from South Africa’s Stellenbosch, maybe). And when you’re gazing out over the 178 acres of land next to the park, spotting the occasional buffalo (and on much rarer occasions, a gorilla), rest assured the terrain is being rehabilitated with a replanting project that will create an extension of gorilla habitat around the park .

One&Only Gorilla’s Nest

Best for: wellness buffs

Highlight: The resort features running paths, a state-of-the-art gym, and a serene spa with a heated swimming pool.

The calm, eucalyptus-shaded grounds of One&Only Gorilla’s Nest are a welcome respite from the bustling neighboring city of Musanze. The latest luxury lodge to open near Volcanoes National Park is a leafy, 35-acre oasis where 21 guest rooms—configured as one- or two-bedroom suites—sit along winding, landscaped pathways. Interiors are studies in natural wood and geometric Rwandan Imigongo designs; basket porch swings make for easy lounging on large larchwood terraces.

Between trips to Volcanoes National Park for mountain gorilla and golden monkey treks, travelers at the resort will find plenty of things to better acquaint them with Rwanda. Opt for a coffee tasting of locally grown, female-owned Question Coffee, maybe, or head over to the recently restored Jack Hanna House, the former residence of the famed Columbus Zoo and Aquarium zoologist known for introducing America to rare animal species on talk shows and TV programs. Guests can pass an afternoon at the cottage, which retains its original furnishings and wood floors, for a game of cards on Hanna’s veranda, or book the space for a private dinner of local Rwandan dishes.

Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge

Best for: adventurous travelers who like a room with a (bird’s- eye) view

Highlight: The soon-to-open Bisate Day Lounge, located on an adjacent hillside, lets guests check in early to shower, change, or grab a light meal or massage while in transit. Slated for early 2021.

Book now: wilderness-safaris.com

A winding volcanic stone staircase leads to the hillside Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, but the 320-foot climb is worth every step: With its six individual villas, Bisate faces views of three volcanoes within Volcanoes National Park, and it is designed to mimic the thatched exteriors of the palace of a Rwandan king. The result is a futuristic-looking cluster of thatched cocoons embedded in the tree-lined hillside, with a sustainable twist: Get closer to the thatching, and you’ll notice it’s made of recycled plastic. Rwandan designer Teta Isibo of Inzuki Designs collaborated with Cape Town–based Artichoke Design on the locally inspired interiors; Rwandan textiles appear on pillows and upholstery; and cowhide rugs cover wooden floors. Showers are made of volcanic stone, and a wood-burning fireplace heats up the entire room to max coziness.

The lodge, set on a former agricultural plot across 106 acres, has undergone a multi-year indigenous tree-replanting project just next to the national park. Thanks to the reforestation, once-absent species such as the golden monkey, tree hyrax (a small mammal related to elephants), and side-striped jackal now roam the grounds. Guests can have a stake in the conservation experience, too: A sapling is planted for each visitor as a gift during their stay, and that visitor takes home the GPS coordinates of their tree so they can check on it once they’ve returned home.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

In the mountainous southwest corner of Rwanda, one of Africa’s oldest mountain rain forests is also one of the country’s most exciting emerging destinations.

One&Only Nyungwe House

Best for: seasoned safarigoers who want to visit less-explored ecosystems

Highlight: An hour-long helicopter ride from One&Only Nyungwe House’s private helipad offers guests a sweeping overhead view of the jungle.

When it opened in late 2018 on a working tea plantation next to the national park, One&Only Nyungwe House was the only luxury retreat in this less-discovered part of Rwanda. But that could change quickly, now that African Parks , a Johannesburg-based conservation NGO that works with governments on long-term, donor and tourism-funded park management agreements, is taking over the management of the Nyungwe Forest to improve wildlife conservation efforts and develop tourism. The goal is to showcase why Nyungwe—which supplies 70 percent of Rwanda’s water—is also a compelling destination for aficionados of the natural world. The terrain is filled with mahogany and ebony trees, swamps, and waterfalls, and it’s home to 13 species of primates, including the colobus monkey and the gray-cheeked mangabey. There’s plenty for the bird lovers, too: close to 300 bird species, such as great blue turacos and giant hornbills, inhabit the area.

The sprawling One&Only retreat, with its 22 one- and two-bedroom suites, is a destination unto itself. Geometric Imigongo designs cover interior walls with their dramatic, black-white-and-red color scheme; hand-woven decorative plates from local cooperative Indego Africa decorate the rooms; and king-size four-poster beds dominate the spacious bedrooms, all of which face the jungle through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Akagera National Park

A 3.5-hour drive outside of Kigali, Akagera National Park is just 433 square miles, but its turnaround story is monumental. After suffering heavy poaching and other extractive activities in the wake of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, it now receives 36,000 visitors a year—half of which are Rwandan nationals. That’s because in 2010, African Parks took over the management of Rwanda’s only savanna park in partnership with the government-led Rwanda Development Board. The NGO has dramatically improved the park’s biodiversity (it’s now home once again to Africa’s iconic “Big Five” species, including the endangered eastern black rhinoceros), along with better infrastructure, strong law enforcement, and improved relationships with area communities.

Wilderness Safaris Magashi Camp

Best for : guests who want to get a close-up look at a successful wildlife conservation story

Pro tip: With rates starting at $540 (all inclusive) in the country’s lower “green” season, Magashi is great value for the kind of exclusivity and luxury you’re getting in East Africa.

In 2019, Wilderness Safaris Magashi Camp debuted in the park’s wildlife-rich northeastern corner along scenic Lake Rwanyakazinga as the only luxury lodging. Magashi is also the only privately managed area in Akagera, which means that guests staying at this property have more than 16,000 acres to explore all by themselves . Magashi’s private concession status also allows for offroading, walking safaris, and even evening drives—all activities that are prohibited in the park. In the six spacious tents, which are fully solar powered, sisal rugs cover natural wood floors, and traditional basket weavings decorate stone-clad bathrooms. Each accommodation has its own deck facing the lake, which is teeming with hippos and crocodiles. When you’re not on a game drive checking out nearby lion prides or taking a spin on the retreat’s double-decker swamp cruiser, you can cool off and take in the magical surroundings at the lake-facing swimming pool.

Rwanda’s bustling capital, home to a new generation of creative entrepreneurs, is worth a couple of extra days on your itinerary.

The Retreat

Best for: culture and history buffs

Highlight: Heaven Tours runs outstanding cultural experiences out of the city–including one on Rwandan fashion and another that takes guests to the moving Nyamata Church Genocide Site. (Stay two nights at the Retreat, and you get a half-day cultural tour.)

San Francisco native Alissa Ruxin started out as a health professional, but that all changed when she arrived in Rwanda with her husband, Josh, in 2006. Her pivot to hospitality in 2008, when she opened Heaven Boutique Hotel and Heaven Restaurant, was part of a larger plan to bring more hospitality training and employment to the city at a time when Rwanda was beginning to emerge as a global tourism destination.

Two years ago, she opened her second hotel, the Retreat, which is now regarded as one of the city’s most sought-after boutique hotels—and likely even more so after the debut of eight enormous villa suites in January 2021. Each suite is slated to be massive (1,300 square feet) and will feature oak floors, high ceilings, mattresses made of organic materials, and outdoor showers; they’ll also have their own saltwater plunge pools heated by solar power. Part of the property upgrade included an expanded gym, a new three-room spa, and an outdoor fitness deck that hosts weekly yoga classes.

Gishwati-Mukura National Park lodging

The Gishwati Forest recently signed a 25-year contract with the Rwandan government to introduce luxury ecotourism in a multiphase plan for Gishwati-Mukura National Park, located in northwest Rwanda just a couple of hours’ drive from Volcanoes National Park. The conservation-minded company is collaborating with the Forest of Hope Association , an NGO that played a large role in preserving this park and its chimpanzee population. In the coming months, Forest of Hope Association plans to debut and manage two affordable accommodations, including a campsite for up to eight guests and a basic guesthouse for up to four guests.

The 10 Best Safari Lodges in Africa in 2022

The best safari lodges, according to Travel + Leisure readers, go beyond the traditional game drive with a wide range of cultural experiences.

best safari lodges rwanda

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite safari lodges in Africa.

For Travel + Leisure readers, the best safari lodges in Africa aren't necessarily traditional safari properties — though plenty of those did make this list. Take, for example, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge — a luxurious base for tracking mountain gorillas in the cloud forest of Rwanda. It seems that this once-in-a-lifetime experience elevated guests' memories beyond those of Big Five safaris: the word amazing appears repeatedly in Bisate reviews.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

This year's World's Best list reveals a growing interest in nontraditional safaris. In addition to Bisate at the top spot, there's another Rwandan lodge, One&Only Nyungwe House (No. 3), where the highlights are tracking chimpanzees, bird-watching, and visiting a tea plantation. "A gorgeous property in an incredible location," said one voter. And there's a second gorilla-tracking property on the list: Bwindi Lodge (No. 10), in Uganda. "How special to stay at Bwindi Lodge," wrote one guest, "and be so well cared for when setting out to see the magnificent gorillas."

At No. 2, Gibb's Farm is "the most unique lodge of any kind in East Africa," claimed one reader. Overlooking Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a protected area known for its incredible density of wildlife, the 17-cottage property offers activities around its coffee plantation and gardens, as well as bush walks from the property and wildlife drives in the crater. One guest loved that it was "fun for adults and kids." It's "an incredibly beautiful hotel," said another. "The food was amazing, and I loved the farm-to-table philosophy."

Classic safaris are still well represented, with guests favoring wildlife-rich areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and the South African Kruger National Park. As well as wildlife sightings and luxurious rooms, it was the people who made an impact on T+L readers. Of andBeyond Bateleur Camp (No. 6), in Kenya's Masai Mara, one reader said that "the guides are truly spectacular," while another described "warm, welcoming service."

1. Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

On the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bisate Lodge has six stylish and cozy villas, each overlooking the surrounding villages, forests, and misty mountain peaks. The main activity there is trekking into the national park to spend some time watching the mountain gorillas, but there are also opportunities to see golden monkeys, go hiking in the mountains, or visit the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. The staff are "amazing," said one reader, who added the food was "delicious," especially the homegrown vegetables. Another fan said staying at Bisate was "the absolute best...experience we have ever had. The food, service, and rooms were beyond amazing."

Best Safari Lodges in Rwanda

Rwanda is a well-known safari destination for mostly its gorilla trekking adventures, which not only allow visitors to get up close and personal with endangered mountain gorillas ; but also, golden monkeys, and other primates. A Rwanda safari , however, is more than that! Traveling through rainforests in search of gorillas is just the beginning of the unforgettable experiences available. A safari to the “Land of a Thousand Hills” will also include sightings of the Big 5 in Akagera National Park , hiking up ancient dormant volcanoes, trekking chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest National Park , and relaxing on the “beach,” at Lake Kivu, among others.

Is Gorilla Trekking better in Uganda or Rwanda

Because of its increasing mountain gorilla population, typical savanna wildlife experiences, and rapidly evolving capital of Kigali , Rwanda has emerged as a developing safari destination for many travelers around the globe. Best Lodges and Camps in Rwanda

  • July 27, 2021
  • Travel Info

Best Lodges and Camps in Rwanda, embark on a new adventure. In recent years, Rwanda has become an emerging destination for western luxury travelers, thanks to its growing mountain gorilla population, classic savanna wildlife experiences, and quickly evolving capital city of Kigali. It’s also become a haven of world-class lodgings.  This article gives exclusive, private best lodges and camps in Rwanda. They include:-

Singita Kwitonda Lodge.  Book Now

The only thing better than cinematic views of Volcanoes National Park from your private villa? Enjoying those mist-shrouded peaks from a heated plunge pool next to a roaring fire. Leave it to Singita Kwitonda Lodge, a benchmark setter for luxury safari lodge, to find an unparalleled location for the company’s latest retreat. It’s the closest you can get to the National Park with the eight stand-alone rooms, with their soaring ceilings and picture windows facing the Sabinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura volcanoes, take inspiration from the local landscape (volcanic stone walls; hand-fired terra-cotta brick) and pair it with an earthy palette of grays and greens.

Bisate Lodge.

A winding volcanic stone staircase leads to the hillside of Bisate Lodge, but the 320-foot climb is worth every step: With its six individual villas, Bisate faces views of three volcanoes within Volcanoes National Park, and it is designed to mimic the thatched exteriors of the palace of a Rwandan king. The result is a futuristic-looking cluster of thatched cocoons embedded in the tree-lined hillside, with a sustainable twist: Get closer to the thatching, and you’ll notice it’s made of recycled plastic. Rwandan designer Teta Isibo of Inzuki Designs collaborated with Cape Town-based Artichoke Design on the locally inspired interiors; Rwandan textiles appear on pillows and upholstery, and cowhide rugs cover wooden floors. Showers are made of volcanic stone, and a wood-burning fireplace heats up the entire room to max coziness.

One & Only Gorilla’s Nest Lodge

One & Only Gorilla’s Nest brings extra elegance and comfort to the heart of Volcanoes National Park jungles and awakens freedom of spirit as well as a wild sense of adventure. The facility is made up of 21 Lodges and suites spread across with views of the eucalyptus and Virunga Volcanoes. While here, you will have a chance to participate in breathtaking gorilla treks, golden monkey treks, Volcano hikes as well as birding expeditions, and in the evening unwind in comfort.

Magashi Camp.

In 2019,  Magashi Camp was opened up in the park’s wildlife-rich northeastern corner along scenic Lake Rwanyakazinga as the only luxury lodging. Magashi is also the only privately managed area in Akagera, which means that guests staying at this property have more than 16,000 acres to explore all by themselves. Magashi’s private concession status also allows for offroading, walking safaris, and even evening drives—all activities that are prohibited in the park. In the six spacious tents, which are fully solar-powered, sisal rugs cover natural wood floors, and traditional basket weavings decorate stone-clad bathrooms.

The Retreat by Heaven.

The Retreat is now regarded as one of the city’s most sought-after boutique hotels—and likely even more so after the debut of eight enormous villa suites. Each suite is slated to be massive (1,300 square feet) and will feature oak floors, high ceilings, mattresses made of organic materials, and outdoor showers; they’ll also have their own saltwater plunge pools heated by solar power. Part of the property the upgrade included an expanded gym, a new three-room spa, and an outdoor fitness deck that hosts weekly yoga classes.

One & Only Nyungwe House.

Come Witness this spectacular facility! This is the most recommended accommodation facility for our guests visiting Nyungwe forests. One & Only Nyungwe House  is a stupendous luxury accommodation at the edge of Nyungwe Forest National Park, found in the south-western side of Rwanda. The Lodge is surrounded by a vast tea plantation at the boundary of the chimpanzee trekking national park.

Adventure awaits you, enjoy and stay at one of the best lodges and camps in Rwanda merged with enchanting wildlife, cultural heritage, and exotic cuisine.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Planning your Gorilla safari can be an enjoyable experience in Africa, but there are some important considerations to guide your gorilla tour preparations. These include choosing the best season, deciding what type of gorilla safari you’d like to undertake and where, and selecting accommodations.

The opportunity to track mountain gorillas in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is such an amazing wildlife experience regarded by most travelers as the highlight of any safari to Africa. To inspire you, we have crafted customizable itineraries to help you plan a gorilla safari , spend some time with these endangered gentle giants in the wild. Mountain Gorillas

With about 1050 mountain gorillas left in the world, Uganda and Rwanda harbor the largest population of these species however the gorilla groups in Virungas are easier to access than those living in Uganda’s impenetrable rain forest of Bwindi. Embark on a 3 hour drive from Kigali to the volcanoes , check in your lodge for dinner and overnight stay. Tracking the gorillas begins the next day, it takes a lot of effort as the bushes are thick with stinging nettles and steep slippery slopes and that’s why its always advisable to carry 4 bottles of water , a rain coat and rubber boots. You will enjoy a full hour in the midst of the gorillas taking pictures (no flash) and observing their way of living, feeding and resting.

Celebrating 25 Years

Pioneers of gorilla and chimpanzee eco-tourism in uganda and rwanda since 1997.

We have had a clear vision during our 25 year journey: to develop lodges that are sensitive to local culture and aesthetics, connect to local communities and conservation of great ape species and seek to use resources responsibly.

The Volcanoes team is excited to welcome you to our lodges and to share the rich culture, history, and hospitality traditions of the Great Lakes Region of Africa.

Volcanoes Safaris Lodges

Volcanoes Safaris is the only company in the world to focus exclusively on the gorilla and chimpanzee parks of Uganda and Rwanda, a very rare and distinct type of eco-tourism. We have three lodges near the mountain gorilla parks: Virunga Lodge  in Rwanda and Bwindi Lodge and Mount Gahinga Lodge in Uganda. Kyambura Gorge Lodge and Kibale Lodge , opening in early 2024, focus on the chimpanzees.

Each of our lodges are connected to unique community and conservation projects, developed by the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust , which allow guests to experience the local community and participate in eco-tourism and community-based conservation.

In 2022 we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Volcanoes Safaris with a series of events with our partners, including the Jane Goodall Institute, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, and Empowers Africa. We hosted a retreat with 25 conservationists at Mount Gahinga Lodge, where the ‘Albertine Apes Alliance’  was created to support collective action and advocacy to support the long term future of the great apes in the Albertine Rift .

Safari Activities

Chimpanzee tracking.

Tracking chimpanzees in their natural habitat, as they swing from the branches in the canopy high above the forest floor is nothing short of exhilarating. The chimps effortlessly cross and scamper through the trees above the gorge, and visitors on the other hand must cross the river using natural bridges in order to keep up with the chimps. So although the walk usually lasts only 2–3 hours, descending the steep gorge and crossing the log bridges over the river requires some agility and fitness.

Chimpanzee tracking is also available in nearby Kalinzu, a forest reserve 30 minutes drive from Kyambura Gorge Lodge where there is a community of about 40 habituated chimpanzees.
