Spacey Jane announce ‘Here Comes Everybody’ tour, share ‘Hardlight’

I Know Leopard and Teenage Dads will join the Perth band on tour

spacey jane tour

Spacey Jane have shared details for their national Australian tour in support of their upcoming second album ‘Here Comes Everybody’, as well as sharing a new single from it.

The tour, announced today (May 19), is set to take place in August – some two months after the release of ‘Here Comes Everybody’ on June 24. With the exception of their hometown of Perth, the band will play two shows in each city – one an all-ages show, the other an 18-and-over show. Joining the band for the tour will be Sydney synth-pop trio I Know Leopard and Brisbane indie-rock band Teenage Dads .

Ahead of the tour, the band have shared ‘Hardlight’ – the fifth single to be lifted from ‘Here Comes Everybody’ prior to release. ‘Lots Of Nothing’ and ‘Lunchtime’ were shared in 2021, while ‘Sitting Up’ and ‘It’s Been A Long Day’ both came out earlier this year. An accompanying music video has also been shared for the single, directed by Nick McKinlay and shot on the Yarra River in Melbourne.

Watch the video below:

In a press statement, frontman Caleb Harper noted that the song dealt with “anxiety” and “having no idea what I’m doing, even though I want it to look like I really do”.

“I wrote this song about how I was feeling like my life was a bit like one of those nightmares where you’re at school with no pants,” he said. “I used the metaphor of being on set and forgetting all of your lines, because it felt less silly.”

The ‘Here Comes Everybody’ Australian tour continues the band’s extensive run of dates throughout 2022 – which included a run of Australian theatres in March with RAT!Hammock and Becca Hatch , as well as both headlining and festival dates in North America, the UK and Europe. The band will also see out 2022 in Australia, playing both Spilt Milk and Falls Festival .

Tickets for the tour will first go on-sale with a pre-sale at 10am local time on Tuesday May 24, with a general sale following on Friday May 27 – also at 10am local time. Tickets for Melbourne and Perth are available here , while tickets for Sydney and Brisbane will be available here . View a full list of dates below.

Spacey Jane Release ‘Here Comes Everybody’ Deluxe Edition and Announce Regional Tour

By Jules LeFevre

Perth outfit Spacey Jane have released a deluxe edition of their 2022 album,  Here Comes Everybody,  and announced a string of regional tour dates through May and June 2023.

The tour will kick off on Wednesday, 24th May at the Wollongong Uni Hall, after which Spacey Jane will move through regional centres up the east coast and finish on the Sunshine Coast in early June. See all the dates and details below.

Spacey Jane: ‘Sorry Instead’

Spacey Jane have also dropped a new single and video from the deluxe release called ‘Sorry Instead’.

“’Sorry Instead’ only just missed out on making the album so it feels good to finally have it out in the world,” frontman Caleb Harper said of the release. “I really like how dark the verses feel compared to the chorus and the ‘woahhhh’ chants at the end were super fun in the studio with Ashton [Hardman-Le Cornu, guitar] and Kon [Kersting, producer].”

Spacey Jane recently broke records by having three songs place in the top six of triple j’s Hottest 100 : #3 was ‘Hardlight’, #5 was ‘It’s Been A Long Day’, and #6 was ‘Sitting Up’. Three more of their tracks appeared in the countdown, with ‘Pulling Through’ landing at #25, ‘Yet’ at #40, and ‘Bothers Me’ at #75.

They’ll head out on a UK and European tour later this month, starting in Dublin.

Spacey Jane

Many big bands and artists have resurfaced with shiny new records post-pandemic. But what about the small bands? What happens when you take away live music from artists who are just getting started? Well, thanks to modern music streaming and the vinyl revival, plenty of them managed just fine.

  • READ MORE: Introducing… Alfie Templeman: The indie artist getting real about mental health, but also making it funky

That’s certainly the case for Spacey Jane . The Perth-based indie quartet recently released their sophomore album Here Comes Everybody , written during Australia’s ceaseless lockdowns. It’s time capsule of a lonely summer spent cooped up indoors, with all the time in the world to reminisce on friendships, love, loss and life.

Back in June 2020, the band were due to tour the UK in 100-200 capacity venues on the back of their debut album Sunlight . When they finally got to tour it just under two years later in April 2022 after covid restrictions eased, they found themselves facing 500- to 1,500-strong crowds instead. At a time when we were all searching for our new favourites bands, Spacey Jane’s music was growing in the underswell.

“It was amazing, we were just ecstatic,” lead guitarist Ashton Hardman-Le Cornu tells us. “None of us had been to the UK before so to be completely in new places and have people singing along to the songs and the guitar riffs, it was incredible. We felt so welcomed. I’m excited to come back later this year hopefully.”

The band, rounded out by Caleb Harper, Kieran Lama and Peppa Lane, currently sits at more than one million monthly listeners on Spotify. New record Here Comes Everybody  features their trademark beachy sound but this time it’s more mature. “It was maybe two weeks or so following the release of the first [album] when we were like, ‘Shit, we need to do it again’, so we were kind of writing it right out the gates,” Hardman-Le Cornu says. “I had a chance to try a whole lot of different tones and sounds that maybe we would have stayed away from before. I think it leans a little in the softer direction than the last record – we’re a bit more grown up now.”

Although Spacey Jane’s two albums and three EPs sit well with your typical indie fans, the band’s discography to date also boasts a fresh, bittersweet edge that should appeal to those outside the genre too. “We try to do things differently,” Hardman Le-Cornu says. “I often find that if it sounds weird, we usually like it. We try not to have too many bluesy riffs or anything – as much as I love that stuff, it’s already been done.”

Spacey Jane - Here Comes Everybody

When it comes to the band’s playing styles and approach to sound, they’re still working things out. But, having been making music together since university, they already have a solid routine for how things come together.

“Caleb and I have a unique relationship guitar-wise. Our tones are very different, and I think that’s something that’s helped us. Our style of playing is different too: he’s a lot more rounder with jangly-sounding tones, and I have a bit of an edgy tone. There’s something great that happens when we play together, and that’s always been the way it’s worked between us, but we’re still figuring it out.”

Since Spacey Jone have been back on the road post-lockdowns, they’ve made some changes to their gear to keep things streamlined. “It’s a lot easier if you rock up somewhere and with your Kemper sim and you know it’s gonna sound the same no matter where you go,” Hardman Le-Cornu says, “whereas with renting in different cities, you get these rinky-dink amps where you don’t know if it’s gonna sound the same or break halfway through.

“We went crazy making up tones and effects. I’ve always used multi effects but for the last two years I’ve used a Line 6 Helix pedalboard. There’s something about playing live with the fluidity of switching tone without fiddling to get the right sort of things. I think a lot of old gearheads, especially the old dudes you find in guitar shops with the ponytails, they’re really scared of digital-sounding things, but there’s a lot of good to be said about them.”

They may keep it simple when it comes to effects but Spacey Jane’s go-to guitars are much more expressive. “Caleb’s got a Rickenbacker 620 Midnight Blue,” Hardman Le-Cornu says. “It’s beautiful. I play a Fender Jag, a ’66. I’ve got a 12-string Fender Strat [that I used on] a couple of songs. I love playing 12-strings, especially acoustic, and I never had a chance to do that on a record before, so I got super-jangly with it.”

Over time, many players become known for their setups, and it’s usually a sign that their band is on to something big. “When we first played around Perth, I heard we were known as that band that had really nice guitars,” Hardman Le-Cornu says, with a chuckle. Not a bad reputation to earn, huh?

Spacey Jane

Despite their sun-kissed riffs, Spacey Jane aren’t an easy-listening act. Ever since Sunlight  struck an emotive chord with millions of people in 2020, they’ve sought to stand for something more than just that summer aesthetic.

“People have told us they really connected with that record and it helped them get through that time. If we can help people get through tough times then that’s really special and really beautiful. Part of why we like playing live so much is connecting with [people] and gathering with everyone who’s been off listening to this music alone. It’s a really beautiful thing that we’re lucky to do.

“It’s hard to feel like what you do is important as a musician or artist when suddenly that stuff [live music] isn’t really anywhere anymore, and there’s more important things going on, but it’s taught us the value of what we do.”

As life goes on and gigs and festivals return across the world, Spacey Jane continue to blossom. “I’m really proud of us, says Hardman Le-Cornu says. “I’m excited to take the next steps as a band and define ourselves a little bit differently from the last record. I’ve realised as covid slowly dissipates that my life is gonna look a lot different than it has the last two years. I’m looking at the calendar and I’m not gonna be home all that much, so it’s gonna be a lot of touring and lots of new places. I’m very excited about this phase. We’re already thinking about the next record.”

If Spacey Jane continue the way they are, they won’t be small for much longer.

Interview: Spacey Jane

spacey jane tour

Like many other bands who had big plans for 2020, Spacey Jane ’s were cut short due to the global pandemic. The Australian band’s debut album, Sunlight , was released in June of that year during a time where the primary promotion tactic, touring, was put on indefinite hold. Despite the challenges, the band’s sunny alt-rock reached the ears of people looking for brightness during a dark time and the single, “Booster Seat,” was named the 2021 Song Of The Year by the Australian Recording Industry Association

Rather than take a break and wait things out, singer/guitarist Caleb Harper began working on new material with ideas he had before Sunlight had been released. For what would eventually become Spacey Jane’s sophomore album, Here Comes Everybody , Harper tapped more difficult subject matter than the debut, partially due to the condition of the world in light of a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, partially based on self-reflection and mistakes made along the way. Despite some tough lyrics, the band, which also includes bassist Peppa Lane , guitarist Ashton Le Cornu and drummer Kieran Lama , continues to deliver bright sounds that are arena ready. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Spacey Jane follows up their 2021 ARIA award with a 2022 Album Of The Year award for Here Comes Everybody .

With a U.S. tour on the horizon, Harper took some time to answer questions delivered via email.

Where did you feel Spacey Jane was at in February 2020? Did you feel like you were well on your way to whatever came next or were you still trying to figure things out?

CALEB : Hmm, it’s hard to know exactly where we thought we were or what we thought was going to happen. We were so excited to put our first record out and wanted the best for it, we just wanted to have as many people listening as possible. guess we didn’t really expect what came next so we’re all pretty stoked on what’s transpired since!

I feel like there should be a picture book of Instagram photos by bands that were posted in early March 2020. I see so many happy bands who are either already on the road or who have announced tour dates and are exclaiming, “We can’t wait to see you all.” And then those bands post the “Due to the ever-evolving situation, we are postponing dates for now” and, in hindsight, you know that it’s going to be a long time before those bands are actually able to play a show. Do you remember the situation that led to the conversation about postponing or canceling dates? And, do you recall if you were hopeful that this would all pass over in a few months or did you have the feeling we were in it for the long haul?

CALEB : Yes, I remember it clearly. The Australian federal government put a ban on all gatherings over 500 people and that basically put a stop to all touring for the foreseeable future for us. I think, at first, we felt similarly to a lot of people, that it was going to be a 2-4 week drop in the ocean. But as the reality of the severity of Covid set in, there was a slow realisation that we were really about to be eating shit for a long while to come, ha ha.

You gave birth to a Covid baby named Sunlight. Was there any consideration into pushing the release date back knowing that you wouldn’t be able to get out right away to support it?

CALEB : We thought about it briefly but in the end, with no real end in sight, it wasn’t like we were working towards some later, more certain date. So we just dropped it when it was ready and I think the vacuum of new releases around that time actually helped to give Sunlight some space to have its moment.

I’ve read that you’re a big Wilco fan and named the album after the working title for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and even reached out to Jeff Tweedy . Can you put your finger on why Wilco is so special to you? What is it that you find appealing and was it something you found appealing from your very first listen or is it a band that you grew into?

CALEB : My step-dad first showed me Wilco some time in my early teens and they were always playing around the house and in the car. I love Wilco for a number of reasons, Jeff writes with such vulnerability and isn’t afraid to let things meander and be figured out as they go. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is one of my favourite albums of all time, I always go back to it and I’m always finding new meaning and inspiration from it. I love how brave they were in creating that record and that’s something we always work towards.

The lyrics on Here Comes Everybody are full of self-introspection. From finding yourself to dealing with anxiety and depression to making sense of fractured relationships. Was it hard to visit those places in your mind to pull out lyrics or is it a place you can go to now that you’ve started working through everything?

CALEB : Yea, it can be tough to explore those emotions, for sure, but something about song writing makes it feel like there’s a barrier between me and those songs and those themes. It’s something I try to be conscious of for my own wellbeing, not having to make myself so vulnerable every time I perform or create.

The first few times I listened to the album, I didn’t listen intently to the lyrics and while the songs aren’t straight up rays of sunshine, I imagine it could have been a lot darker if the music matched the lyrics. Was it a conscious decision not to fall into a black hole musically?

CALEB : No it’s not really by design as much as it might seem. The music and lyrics are created mostly separate from each other, we just like making music that makes you feel something strongly even if you can’t hear the lyrics.

Besides writing songs, in what ways, if at all, were you able to maintain your mental wellbeing during the period of lockdown?

CALEB : I got into running (sadly) which was really helpful in so many ways. Obviously exercise is good for your mind and body but I also found that just having something to work towards and challenge myself with was really important.

I think the last 2.5 years have really affected many people’s mental health, mine included. I live in Ohio where our winters are cold and gray and last five months. This past winter, coming out of the extreme measures of maintaining safety during a global pandemic, I couldn’t help but slip into depression. I found your explanation of what “Clean My Car” is about hits me right in the chest. Before finding a great therapist, it was a challenge to get out of the bed in the morning and go about my day. Was this type of weight blocking you from writing songs or was that a bright spot in an otherwise dark timeline?

CALEB : It means a lot to me that you felt a connection to that song, it obviously resonates with me very deeply. It was a bit of both I guess, that weight can be extremely prohibitive when it comes to creating but like you say writing is also a distraction and for me is often a way of distilling and addressing big feelings.

I recently spoke with Alice Merton and, thematically, the lyrical inspiration for the songs on her new album aren’t that different from yours. And, like you, she closes her album with a song of hope (“The Other Side”). Like Alice, did you feel like it was important to end the album on a positive note?

CALEB : Yes, although we didn’t write the song for that reason, it was the obvious choice when we were working out the track list. I think it was important for us to feel like we can offer at least some sense of hope, even if it’s a weak and uncertain hope.

As a younger band, this probably doesn’t weigh heavily on you, but wondering, when you’re working on a setlist for the upcoming tour, will it be balanced between the two albums since you didn’t get a chance to do a lot of touring for Sunlight or are you considering that something from the past and stacking the setlist with newer songs?

CALEB : We’re trying to find the right balance there. Obviously we want to play as many songs off the new record as possible but there are so many tracks from Sunlight and even earlier that we love to play.

Later this year, you’re doing your first U.S. tour. Do you have any sort of expectations? Anything you’re particularly looking forward to seeing, eating, visiting, etc?

CALEB : I’ve spent a bit of time over there this year already and I really love it! Honestly we’re just really really excited to meet new fans on the other side of the world. That shit is still so mind blowing to us.

As you ended the album on a lighter note, I’d like to end the interview on a lighter note. If you could put together a time capsule containing the music, movies, books, entertainment that kept you sane during the pandemic lockdown, what would you include?

Spacey Jane / Dolores Forever, The Roundhouse, London, 10th February 2023

Award-winning Aussie band Spacey Jane may not be a household name in the UK, but they filled legendary London venue The Roundhouse to bursting on Friday night and those excited 3,300 fans sang along to almost every word of every song.

The band’s largest audience outside of their home country so far, since they formed in Western Australia in 2016. Average age of the crowd would have been no older than early 20s methinks, with the odd mum and/or dad dotted about to chaperone.

Gig # three of a six-date sold out UK tour – Glasgow, Manchester, London, Southampton, Bristol and Birmingham (plus Dublin to kick off with) – and this band really did deliver an incendiary set for the Chalk Farm/Camden venue fans.

Support act on the tour, Dolores Forever, are future stars for my money, and while the crowd did not know their songs, they won over the audience after just one song. No chatter from the Spacey Jane fans; a respectful listening crowd taking it all in.

Dolores Forever are from London, fronted by Hannah Wilson from Yorkshire and Julia Fabrin, who was born to Danish parents in Indonesia, but lived in Cape Town before a move to Copenhagen. Maybe a wee bit of a similar vibe to the wonderful Wet Leg, in the indie meets folk style. Fab harmonies. Ones to watch for sure.

Hannah and Julia are both individually accomplished songwriters across K-pop hits, Scandipop bops and Eurovision winners. After a handful of their own shows and the Spacey Jane tour, Dolores Forever’s first headline show is at Omeara in London on Weds 15th Feb.

They are booked for Live At Leeds In The Park and Neighbourhood Weekender in Warrington, both in May. They triumphed with two spots at Glastonbury Festival in 2022.

Spacey Jane offered up a sparkling 15-song set (see full set list below), with tracks from their brace of albums, “Sunlight” from June 2020 and their latest, “Here Comes Everybody” which dropped in June 2022.

Spacey Jane are lead singer and main songwriter Caleb Harper, guitarist Ashton Hardman-Le Cornu, Peppa Lane (bass guitar) – who replaced original member Amelia Murray in 2019 – and drummer Kieran Lama. They make a big sound for a four-piece.

Harper is a formidable front man and some great pipes, who told the fans in London he loved the city so much he was house-hunting here. Probably a wee joke, but there were 3,000+  in the room who may well happily give him their spare bedroom for while.

Wonder if any fans took the drummer up on his invite to join him for a few beers after the show, when he gave out his mobile number on stage?

Many Aussies snapping up tickets, with London a major destination for ex-pat Antipodeans. “Coming back to the UK is a habit we’d like to get used to.” We could too, based on their stunning performance tonight.

If guitarist Ashton had been wearing a Fitbit during the gig, he’d have clocked up a few thousand steps for sure. Shirtless at one point, long hair flying,  good impression of a whirling dervish; not sure how he holds those notes at the same time. His indie flair gives real flavour to the band’s sound.

There is light and and shade between their rocking tracks and more laid back acoustic numbers, without losing the audience’s attention. A lot of that is down to Caleb’s excellent vocals and stage presence.

spacey jane tour

Infectious, joyous, electric, sizzling, passionate. Frigging lit! Just some of the words I penned in my notes while watching this outfit, to sum up their set. If live music was a food, this band were Michelin starred tonight. Yum yum, nom nom….more please!

  • Spacey Jane have recently released the deluxe edition of their latest album “Here Comes Everybody”, which incudes four bonus tracks.

spacey jane tour

Dolores Forever played tracks from their new EP “Conversations with Friends”, 2022 EP “Baby Teeth” and their singles to-date, including the superb “Rothko” and “Party In My Mind”, and the current banger, “When I Say So” (1st Feb). Just like the headliners tonight, this act have chemistry a-plenty, tonnes of talent and a sound that is on-trend and soon to blast off.

Hannah and Julia met at a house party in London, and could well be “the next big thing” in indie pop music with the right wind behind them. I was mightily impressed, as evidently were 3,000+ Spacey Jane fans. I intend to see this band in their own right asap and report back….
