Weather in Baltimore: Climate, Seasons, and Average Monthly Temperature

Baltimore is in the mid-Atlantic region of the East Coast and therefore experiences all four seasons. Extreme weather here is rare.

Summer is quite warm and humid; average highs range from 80 degrees Fahrenheit to 89 degrees Fahrenheit, though temperatures in the 90s are not unheard of.

In the winter, the city sees average temperatures between 29 degrees Fahrenheit and 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The sun is often shining, and while snow is possible, it is not guaranteed. When it does snow, no more than a few inches stick to the ground.  

Spring and fall are the most mild, with temperatures ranging from 48 degrees Fahrenheit to 76 degrees Fahrenheit.

Due to its predictable and most moderate climate, the city is a popular tourist destination throughout most of the year. Here’s what you need to know when planning your trip to Baltimore so you know when to go and what to pack.

Spring in Baltimore

Spring in Baltimore is extremely pleasant and one of the best times to visit. Temperatures are mild, there is plenty of sunshine, and flowers are beginning to bloom. Baseball season is just beginning, and there are several outdoor festivals. There may be a few rainy days.

What to pack: Layers are useful in spring since it might get warmer or cooler throughout the day and evening. Jeans and light trousers, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and long-sleeve button downs are useful. A raincoat or other light jacket is good to have on hand, as are sunglasses.

Summer in Baltimore

Be prepared to sweat: June to August is generally hot and humid in Baltimore (think 75 percent humidity). The sunny weather brings more tourists, and festivals and boat rides around the harbor are popular. It's still baseball season, and the city is especially crowded on game days. Expect plenty of free outdoor music concerts throughout the summer.

What to pack: You’ll want shorts, T-shirts, and tank tops for the sticky heat. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and hats will also prove useful. Rain can still occur, so check the forecast and see if you need rain gear.

Fall in Baltimore

Autumn is a beautiful time to visit Baltimore thanks to changing leaves, cooler temperatures, and less humidity. While days are getting shorter, there’s still plenty of sunshine. As baseball season winds down, football season begins and game days will bring out the crowds.

What to pack: Jeans, light pants, button downs, and T-shirts can be layered with a jacket. If you’re there in late fall, you’ll probably want a sweater and maybe a heavier jacket and scarf. Sunglasses are still a good idea, and if rain is in the forecast, bring a raincoat or umbrella.

September: High: 80 degrees F; Low: 64 degrees F

October: High: 68 degrees F; Low: 52 degrees F

November: High: 58 degrees F; Low: 43 F

Winter in Baltimore

Winter gets pretty chilly—especially at night. The days, while cold and short, can still be sunny. Because everyone is spending less time outdoors, museums and indoor attractions tend to be more crowded, particularly around the holidays. The Christmas season brings markets and light shows, while January and February promises fewer crowds and better deals on hotels and flights. Be prepared for possible snow and ice.

What to pack: Warm pants, sweaters, coats, hats, gloves, and scarves should all be in your suitcase. If it has snowed recently or if snow is in the forecast, bring warm, waterproof boots.

It may surprise you that there is much more to Baltimore, Maryland than what you see on TV! A vibrant city of many firsts with heart, soul, and charm that has a rich history will museums and galleries to tell stories for days. Including the Inner Harbor, breathtaking skyline view, and amazing food. If you’ve never thought to visit Baltimore, I’m here to share why you should. Here’s my ultimate Baltimore travel guide to inspire and help you plan an amazing trip!

Best time to travel: Baltimore has distinct seasons and honestly anytime is a great time to attend. If you’re not a fan of colder weather or snow avoid winter and opt for summer when the city is warm and active or fall when the foliage is changing and the weather is perfect.

Getting There

When planning your Baltimore travel, many non-locals are surprised to learn that Baltimore is not as close to the district as they assumed. Don’t get me wrong, Baltimore is also not ridiculously far either but a drive can range from 45 to 90 minutes depending on where you’re located. But once in Baltimore transportation is very easy.  

Though I can hop in a car and arrive in Downtown Baltimore in roughly 60 minutes, it may not be as simple for everyone. If you’re looking to travel to Baltimore, you have many transportation options to get you around.

If you’re traveling and driving isn’t an option, the Baltimore area has three major airports available for everyone to fly into. The Washington, DC metropolitan area airports include Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport ( BWI ), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport ( DCA) and, Washington Dulles International Airport ( IAD ). After arriving there are rideshares, taxi, car services, rentals and, public transportation like Light RailLink are available to take you around. 

Train Service

If you are a person who loves slow travel, arriving in the Baltimore area by train can be a transportation option for you. Amtrak runs daily with Sunday being my favorite day of the week to travel as it seems to be slightly quieter. If you’re local and want to train to Baltimore for a weekend stay, MARC is available to get you there and back. 

*Tip: Arriving at Union Station spend a few moments checking out the building for a quick bite or help from the information desk

Bus Service

Another alternative is taking the bus. Many bus companies arrive and leave the area daily with some routes dropping you off directly in Baltimore like OurBus , BoltBus , MegaBus , and Greyhound naming just a few.

Road trips are always in season and for a driver like me, it’s one of my top ways to travel. If you’re coming from afar, this is a great way to turn this into the ultimate road trip . If you’re close by like me, this is an easy staycation option. If you opt to drive, ensure you have all the necessities for a road trip, remember you may hit a toll road and attempt to avoid rush hour if possible. Naturally, the middle of the day can be the best time to drive or even early morning or late at night. 

*Tip: Baltimore isn’t always the easiest place to drive so have your favorite navigation app ready and an expert eye to pay close attention to road signs.

Getting Around

Moving from place to place in Baltimore is relatively easy and a walkable city. You can drive or rent a car which gives you more control over when you leave and how far you can drive. Be sure to download your best parking app to avoid parking tickets. If you rather not drive yourself, taxis and rideshare are available in Baltimore which allows you not to even worry about paying to park. 

If you’re visiting the tourist areas be on the lookout for the Charm City Circulator which is a free hop-on-and-off shuttle downtown. Another unique way to get around Baltimore is via a water taxi , which is also free during select times and offers curated experiences. Additional ground transportation includes Metro Subway Link and the local bus system called CityLink .

Considering humidity, temperatures feel cold for about half of the year and otherwise nice with a chance of rain or snow throughout most of the year. The area is less temperate than some — in the 21st percentile for pleasant weather — compared to tourist destinations worldwide. Weeks with ideal weather are listed above . If you’re looking for the very warmest time to visit Baltimore, the hottest months are July, August, and then June. See average monthly temperatures below. How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early on the morning of March 26  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city. 

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future. 

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access. 

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed. 

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes. 

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.    

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge? 

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping. 

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C. 

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA. 

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic. 

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).  

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.

What happened in Baltimore on Tuesday morning?

A major bridge in Baltimore in the US state of Maryland collapsed after a container ship collided with it early on Tuesday, sending a number of vehicles into the chilly waters.

Rescuers pulled out two survivors, and were searching for more in the Patapsco River after reports that a 948ft Singapore-flagged container ship leaving port on its way to Sri Lanka had crashed into the 1.6-mile (2.57-km) Francis Scott Key Bridge, named after the author of the American national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner.

The state’s governor has declared a state of emergency to get federal resources quickly deployed. Joe Biden said search and rescue efforts were a “top priority” and that all indications were that the episode was a “terrible accident”.

What do we know about casualties?

Six people remain unaccounted for after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse, authorities said – all believed to be construction workers who had been repairing potholes on the bridge. Two people have been rescued so far, with one of them in serious condition.

The temperature in the river was about 47F (8C) in the early hours of Tuesday, according to a buoy that collects data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Several vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the crash, including one the size of a tractor-trailer.

What do we know about the ship and the cause of the collision?

Ship-tracking data showed the Dali – a 290-metre (948ft) cargo ship with a capacity of 10,000 containers – was at the location of the bridge where the accident occurred at about 1.30am ET (0530 GMT) on Tuesday. The vessel had left Baltimore at 1am and was headed for the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, according to the maritime data platform MarineTraffic.

Maryland’s governor, Wes Moore, said a preliminary investigation into the Key Bridge collapse “points to an accident”, and the FBI in Baltimore said the collapse of the bridge was not a result of terrorism.

The ship’s crew reported losing power and issued a mayday call moments before the crash took down the bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span, Moore said.

Video posted on social media showed the vessel ploughing into one of the bridge’s central supports in darkness, causing much of the bridge to give way as a number of vehicles fell into the Patapsco River below and the ship caught fire. Synergy Marine Group, the manager of the Dali, confirmed it had collided with one of the pillars of the bridge.

The same vessel was also involved in a collision while leaving the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016.

How important is Baltimore port and what will the impact be on trade there?

The bridge leads to the Baltimore port, one of the busiest in the country and an important hub for shipping on the US east coast, especially in transporting road vehicles.

It is also the largest US port by volume for handling farm and construction machinery, as well as agricultural products, and a cruise terminal, according to Reuters.

Port traffic was suspended until further notice following the bridge collapse, and there will probably be grave consequences on commerce in the region.

The bridge’s collapse has revived scrutiny not just of this specific structure but also the overall health of bridges across the US, many of which are considered to be in poor condition. Maryland’s governor has said the bridge was “fully up to code”, while some experts have pointed out that the span, completed in 1977, was conceived before an age of supersized container ships.

What are the implications for road transport in Maryland?

With four lanes, the bridge is part of Interstate 695 and serves as a major route along the ring road that encircles the city. The bridge carries 11.3m vehicles a year, according to the Maryland transportation authority.

Authorities have called the incident a “major traffic alert” and closed all lanes in both directions of the I-695 Francis Scott Key Bridge. Highway signs as far south as Virginia have warned drivers of delays.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed after being struck by a cargo ship early Tuesday, was named after the American lawyer who wrote the lyrics of the national anthem. Construction of the bridge started in 1972 and was completed in March 1977.

Plans for the bridge began in the early 1970s, after traffic inundated the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, through which Interstate 895 crosses the harbor. When the bridge opened, The New York Times reported that construction costs had totaled $141 million, which is roughly $735 million in today’s dollars.

More than 12.4 million passenger and commercial vehicles crossed the bridge in 2023, according to a Maryland state government report .

The bridge itself spans 1.6 miles over the Patapsco River, but the crossing’s overall structure, including its connecting approaches, is almost 11 miles long. As part of Interstate 695, it is the outermost of three major crossings of the Baltimore Harbor.

Francis Scott Key was believed to be near the site of the future bridge in 1814 when he observed the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, where he served as quartermaster, during the War of 1812. The battle inspired Mr. Key to write a poem called “The Defense of Fort M’Henry” that would later be set to the music of a popular British tune and renamed “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It became the national anthem in 1931.

After the bridge opened to the public, parts of it underwent renovation several times, including a $14 million project in 1986 to repair damage, improve safety and restore the bridge’s appearance.

Six presumed dead after cargo ship crash levels Baltimore bridge

BALTIMORE — A major Baltimore bridge collapsed like a house of cards early Tuesday after it was struck by a container ship, sending six people to their deaths in the dark waters below, and closing one of the country’s busiest ports.

By nightfall, the desperate search for six people who were working on the bridge and vanished when it fell apart had become a grim search for bodies.

“We do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals still alive,” Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon N. Gilreath said.

Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, said earlier that one of his workers had survived. He did not release their names.

Up until then, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore had held out hope that the missing people might be found even as law enforcement warned that the frigid water and the fact that there had been no sign of them since 1:30 a.m. when the ship struck Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Moore expressed heartbreak after officials suspended the search for survivors.

"Our heart goes out to the families," he said. "I can’t imagine how painful today has been for these families, how painful these hours have been have been for these families."

It was a crushing blow to the loved ones of the missing men, who had waited for hours at a Royal Farms convenience store near the entrance of the bridge for word of their fate.

The tragic chain of events began early Tuesday when the cargo ship Dali notified authorities that it had lost power and issued a mayday moments before the 984-foot vessel slammed into a bridge support at a speed of 8 knots, which is about 9 mph.

Moore declared a state of emergency while rescue crews using sonar detected at least five vehicles in the frigid 50-foot-deep water: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle of some kind. Authorities do not believe anyone was inside the vehicles.

Investigators quickly concluded that it was an accident and not an act of terrorism.

Ship was involved in another collision

Earlier, two people were rescued from the water, Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said. One was in good condition and refused treatment, he said. The other was seriously injured and was being treated in a trauma center.

Moore said other drivers might have been in the water had it not been for those who, upon hearing the mayday, blocked off the bridge and kept other vehicles from crossing.

“These people are heroes,” Moore said. “They saved lives.”

Nearly eight years ago, the Dali was involved in an accident. In July 2016, it struck a quay at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium, damaging the quay.

The nautical commission investigated the accident, but the details of the inquiry were not immediately clear Tuesday.

The Dali is operated and managed by Synergy Group. In a statement, the company said that two port pilots were at the helm during Tuesday's crash and that all 22 crew members onboard were accounted for.

The Dali was chartered by the Danish shipping giant Maersk, which said it would have no choice but to send its ships to other nearby ports with the Port of Baltimore closed.

The bridge, which is about a mile and a half long and carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River southeast of Baltimore, was "fully up to code," Moore said.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said that her agency will lead the investigation and that a data recorder on the ship could provide more information.

"But right now we're focusing on the people, on the families," she said. "The rest can wait."

President Joe Biden vowed to rebuild the bridge and send federal funds.

"This is going to take some time," the president warned. "The people of Baltimore can count on us though to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

Speaking in Baltimore, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg echoed the president's promise.

"This is no ordinary bridge," he said. "This is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure."

But Buttigieg warned that replacing the bridge and reopening the port will take time and money and that it could affect supply chains.

The Port of Baltimore, the 11th largest in the U.S., is the busiest port for car imports and exports, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023 alone, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

Writer David Simon, a champion of Baltimore who set his TV crime drama "The Wire" on the streets of the city he once covered as a reporter, warned online that the people who will suffer the most are those whose livelihoods depend on the port.

"Thinking first of the people on the bridge," Simon posted on X . "But the mind wanders to a port city strangling. All the people who rely on ships in and out."

Timeline of crash

Dramatic video captured the moment at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday when the Dali struck a support and sent the bridge tumbling into the water. A livestream showed cars and trucks on the bridge just before the strike. The ship did not sink, and its lights remained on.

Investigators said in a timeline that the Dali's lights suddenly shut off four minutes earlier before they came back on and that then, at 1:25 a.m. dark black smoke began billowing from the ship's chimney.

A minute later, at 1:26 a.m., the ship appeared to turn. And in the minutes before it slammed into the support, the lights flickered again.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the workers on the bridge were repairing concrete ducts when the ship crashed into the structure.

At least seven workers were pouring concrete to fix potholes on the roadway on the bridge directly above where the ship hit, said James Krutzfeldt, a foreman.

Earlier, the Coast Guard said it had received a report that a “motor vessel made impact with the bridge” and confirmed it was the Dali, a containership sailing under a Singaporean flag that was heading for Sri Lanka.

Bobby Haines, who lives in Dundalk in Baltimore County, said he felt the impact of the bridge collapse from his house nearby.

"I woke up at 1:30 this morning and my house shook, and I was freaking out," he said. "I thought it was an earthquake, and to find out it was a bridge is really, really scary."

Families of bridge workers wait for updates

Earlier in the day, relatives of the construction crew waited for updates on their loved ones.

Marian Del Carmen Castellon told Telemundo her husband, Miguel Luna, 49, was working on the bridge.

“They only tell us that we have to wait and that they can’t give us information,” she said.

Castellon said she was "devastated, devastated because our heart is broken, because we don’t know how they have been rescued yet. We are just waiting for the news."

Luna's co-worker Jesús Campos said he felt crushed, too.

“It hurts my heart to see what is happening. We are human beings, and they are my folks,” he said.

Campos told The Baltimore Banner that the missing men are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

Active search and rescue ends

The Coast Guard said it was suspending the active search-and-rescue effort at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"Coast Guard’s not going away, none of our partners are going away, but we’re just going to transition into a different phase," Gilreath said at a news conference.

Maryland State Police Superintendent Roland L. Butler, Jr., said it was moving to a recovery operation. Changing conditions have made it dangerous for divers, he said. 

Butler pledged to "do our very best to recover those six missing people," but the conditions are difficult.

"If we look at how challenging it is at a simple motor vehicle crash to extract an individual, I'm sure we can all imagine how much harder it is to do it in inclement weather, when it's cold, under the water, with very limited to no visibility," he said.

"There's a tremendous amount of debris in the water," which can include sharp metal and other hazards, and that could take time, Butler said.

'A long road in front of us'

Built in 1977 and referred to locally as the Key Bridge, the structure was later named after the author of the American national anthem.

The bridge is more than 8,500 feet long, or 1.6 miles. Its main section spans 1,200 feet, and it was one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world upon its completion, according to the National Steel Bridge Alliance .

About 31,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, which equals 11.3 million vehicles per year, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The river and the Port of Baltimore are both key to the shipping industry on the East Coast, generating more than $3.3 billion a year and directly employing more than 15,000 people.

Asked what people in Baltimore can expect going forward, the state's transportation secretary said it is too early to tell.

"Obviously we reached out to a number of engineering companies, so obviously we have a long road in front of us," Wiedefeld said.
