Kauai Travel Guide: The Facts

• Kauai’s Mt. Wai’ale’ale is the wettest spot on Earth, averaging 450 inches of rain per year.
• With a coastline of 111-miles, Kauai has more accessible beaches than any other island.
• Over 90% of the land on Kauai is used for Conservation and Agriculture and 70% of the island is inaccessible by foot.
• Chickens run wild on Kauai after Hurricane Iniki destroyed many of the chicken coops. You will get an early start in the morning as the roosters may wake you up.

• Kauai Coffee is the largest coffee plantation in the United States
• You cannot drive around the island. The Na Pali Cliffs and Waimea Canyon make it nearly impossible to build a road to connect west Kauai with the North Shore.
• Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. Once rising more than 10,000 feet above sea level, Olokele Volcano has since eroded down to two main peaks — Waiʻaleʻale (5,148 feet) and Kawaikini (5,243 feet).

Kauai Travel Guide: Geography

Kauai, the Garden Isle, is Hawaii’s fourth-largest island. Like all of the Hawaiian islands, there are two sides: a leeward side and a windward side. The leeward side of the island is drier and the windward side is wetter. 

The island is divided into four main regions: the East Side (including Lihue), the West Side, the North Shore, and the South Shore. 

Also known as the Coconut Coast, the east side is home to groves of coconut trees (hence the name), and is the most populated area of the island. Sights here include the town of Kapa’a, the Wailua River, and ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls. If you’re looking for slightly cheaper accommodations, you’ll find some better value hotel deals on the east side.

There’s plenty to keep you busy in Kapa’a and around Lihue !

The west side feels like you’re miles away from everyone else on Kauai. Gone are the big resorts and traffic. Instead, you have dry landscape, very small towns like Hanapepe and Waimea, and some must-see sights. The most popular attractions here are Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Park.

North Shore

Escape to the beauty of the north shore. This is truly an experience. The jagged cliffs, lush landscape, and beautiful beaches are dramatically breathtaking. Summer here is ideal and the charming town of Hanalei is bustling. Winter brings significantly more rain and large waves.

Two towns you’ll hear mentioned often on the North Shore are Hanalei and Princeville. Princeville is located on a bluff overlooking Hanalei Bay, but you’ll need to drive across Hanalei bridge to reach the town.

South Shore

Picture perfect beaches and the best resorts are located on the sunny south shore. You’ll find famous Poipu Beach here as well as historic Koloa Town. And don’t forget Spouting Horn and the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail. 

This is a great place to stay, especially in the winter months, if you’re hoping for a beach vacation where you can walk from your accommodations to a swimmable beach. In Poipu, there are also plenty of restaurants to enjoy, lots of places to snorkel, and activities galore. It might not be as green and as lush as the north shore, but it has more mild weather year-round.

What’s the Best Time of Year to Visit Kauai?

While you may be visiting from a place that has four seasons each year, in Hawaii there are just two: summer (kau) and winter (hooilo). Summer runs from May to October and winter lasts from November to April. 

As with all the Hawaiian islands, the lowest prices, best weather, and smallest crowds are during the shoulder seasons of September to mid-November and March to May. But one thing to note is that Kauai has warm weather year-round but it does get significantly more rain than the other islands.

You can check out the average rainfall by month and average temperature by month for Hanalei (north shore) and Poipu (south shore). It’s easy to see that Hanalei consistently gets more rain than Poipu all year and is a bit cooler as well.

If you are planning to visit outside of the summer months, staying on the North Shore will mean a lot more rain and rough ocean conditions. If you decide to visit Kauai outside of the summer months, you might want to plan your stay on the South Shore for your best chance of sunny skies and calmer ocean conditions. 

We dive into this more and help you pick the best time to visit Kauai .

Our favorite month to visit Kauai is September. It checks all the boxes for the cheapest time to go, great weather, and it’s less crowded. 

If you can’t get away during the school season, then late May and June are good times to go during the busy season.

And if you’re curious about ocean temperatures and conditions, we have good news. The ocean temperature is always between 75 to 80 degrees, year-round. That means you can swim comfortably in January and in June.

But aside from temperature, consider waves. During the summer months, you can usually find calm water in many places around the island. The exception is if there is a storm (or remnants of a storm) passing by or if the island is getting a south swell. 

In the winter, north swells can bring choppy water and large waves to the north and east sides of the island, while Poipu and the south shore stay a bit calmer.

Kauai Travel Guide: Getting to Kauai

There is one main airport on the island, Lihue Airport (LIH) , which welcomes overseas and inter-island flights. Located on the south-east side of the island, it’s approximately 50 minutes from Princeville on the North Shore, 25 minutes from Poipu on the South Shore, and 10 minutes from the Royal Coconut Coast resort area on the east side.

Renting a Car and Getting Around Kauai

Should you rent a car on Kauai? Most likely, yes. While Kauai does have a bus system and has uber and taxis, renting a car makes traveling around on your vacation easier. 

Our favorite tip for anyone visiting Hawaii is to book with Discount Hawaii Car Rental . When we travel inter-island or we have friends in town, we use them 95% of the time. They offer the most competitive rates, they work with national agencies, you don’t have to pre-book, and you can cancel at any time. For the most part, the roads on Kauai are well paved and easy to navigate with any type of car — no 4-wheel drive required! Though if you want to rent a jeep…it really is fun. 

Lihue Airport (LIH) is located in the capital city of Li’hue. In a centralized location, it is easy to hop in a rental car and head south to Poipu (25-minute drive) or north to Princeville and Hanalei Bay (45-minute drive).

Kauai Travel Guide: Where to Stay on Kauai

Think of Kauai as a compass when considering where to stay:

The most popular resort areas are Poipu (south shore) and Princeville (north shore). They have the best beaches and activities nearby. 

For the best year-round weather, look to Poipu and the South Shore as these beaches stay relatively calm during the winter months while the North Shore gets the big surf.

Should you stay in a hotel or vacation rental on Kauai?

Go for a hotel if you’re looking for the traditional resort experience with big pools, nearby beaches, and restaurants within walking distance. Opt for a vacation rental if you want access to a kitchen, are looking for space, or are looking to save money. 

We routinely stay in both. We’ll book a vacation rental for the majority of our stay so we have access to a kitchen and a little more space for the kids. Then we’ll treat ourselves to a great resort for a few days to enjoy the pool and other amenities. This has been a winning combo for us recently.

What part of Kauai should you stay on?

Most visitors to Kauai plan to stay in one of three areas: Princeville (on the North Shore), Poipu (on the South Shore), or the Royal Coconut Coast (on the East side). Where you decide to stay will depend on the time of year, the vibe you’re going for, and your budget.

How Many Days Should You Spend on Kauai?

How much time do you have? Kauai isn’t a large island but there is a lot to do and see so deciding how long to stay can be a challenge. 

According to Hawaii Tourism Authority data, visitors spend an average of 8 days on the island. Ideally, spending at least a week on Kauai will give you time to balance relaxation with adventure. If you’re island-hopping while in Hawaii, you might feel comfortable visiting Kauai for a few less days but make sure you prioritize your time to see all that you want to (we help you do that in the sections below!).

The Best Beaches and Snorkeling Spots on Kauai

When you are heading to Kauai, you’re in for a treat. The island has plenty of beautiful beaches to choose from, including our favorites: 

• Ke’e Beach: Yes, heading to this beach requires a lot of advanced planning (in the form of a reservation ), but it’s worth it. This is our favorite beach on Kauai for summer swimming thanks to the crystal clear water and the stunning cliffs as a backdrop. The start of the famous Kalalau trail departs from here, but you’ll also need another permit to access that hiking trail.
• Poipu Beach: This south shore beach has been named one of the best in America, and we don’t disagree. Golden sand crescents make this a beautiful spot for beachgoers and snorkelers. Plus, with plenty of parking, heading here is enjoyable.
• Makua (Tunnels) Beach: This beach is stunning, especially in the summer. It’s also a very popular snorkeling spot. But parking here is very limited. Your best bet is to arrive early and park at Ha’ena Beach and make the walk to Tunnels. Ha’ena Beach has a larger parking lot, lifeguards, and showers.

Remember that while the beaches in Hawaii are beautiful, they are not without risk. Currents, dangerous shore break, and changing ocean conditions make swimming in any ocean dangerous. Practice beach safety by swimming on beaches with lifeguards, obeying lifeguard flags, and when in doubt, don’t go out. This website has more excellent information to help keep you safe.

Kauai is the third-most-visited island, with 1.2 to 1.3 million visitors annually. It is also the fourth-largest landmass in the Hawaiian Island chain, which includes eight major islands and 124 islets. The island is defined by its amazing scenery and laid-back vibe. The Garden Isle (arguably, we admit) also boasts more coastline filled with beaches than any other island in the chain. Plus, it hosts a stunning array of uncrowded and secluded beaches, so you're sure to find one that's just right for you.

Kauai's North Shore features some dramatic and beautiful mountain scenery along with a variety of hidden beaches. The area also has an incredible selection of shopping and dining options. While the winter months bring more rain to the northern part of the island, it's still one of the most popular regions. Hanalei Bay is a favorite location for water activities and is home to some of the best beaches in all of Hawaii.

The island's South Shore is popular due to its abundance of sunny weather, even during the wet winter months. Poipu and Lawai offer a wide selection of accommodations, fine dining, and shopping. On the East Coast- also known as the Coconut Coast- Kapaa offers a nice selection of affordable rentals and more shopping than most other areas. While Kauai does have a small town feel to it, many large and big box stores can be found here.

Before I take a trip, I love to read and learn about where we are going before we get there . I will read anything—from guidebooks, histories, and biographies—to fiction set in place. 

The guidebooks help me plan, and in most cases, provide welcome introductory overviews of the culture and history.

They help bring the people and history of a place to life. And they provide a greater depth to my travel experience, much more than my typical brief visit could do alone. 

Plus, reading books related to place introduces me to titles that would never show up on my feeds and are unlikely to be suggested by one of my book groups. Travel-related reading greatly expands my literary repertoire while also—and happily— transforming my way of seeing the world .

The Two Best Books

Shark dialogues.

My overall favorite Hawaii book read was Shark Dialogues by Kiana Davenport .

I deeply enjoyed its multi-generational matriarchal story based on the author’s own diverse family history. Reading the book gave me more than a passersby insight into what life was like for a huge cross-section of Hawaiian citizens.

Stretching back in time – from the 1830s to the modern-day – the book is part dream, part tragedy, and part homecoming . 

It connects four contemporary female cousins through the thread of their fearsome and fearless grandmother and their formative summers spent on her coffee farm on the Big Island . The book also tells a story of how each generation is marked by the one before it.

After reading it, I firmly put Shark Dialogues into my personal category of rare books—such as All The Light We Cannot See — that I am likely to read more than once . 

This is Paradise: Stories

A close second favorite was This Is Paradise: Stories by Kristiana Kahakauwila .

I am not typically a big fan of short story collections, especially when the stories are unrelated. I usually avoid the genre not because the stories are not good—but instead because they are typically so enjoyable to read—I find it distressing to have them end so soon. I am always left wanting more.

However, I made an exception for This Is Paradise: Stories because its collection focused on contemporary Hawaii experience across a broad swath of society, and offered a departure in style and content from my other titles.

This anthology is grittier , and due to its excellent writing, it effortlessly immersed me into the setting of each story—from the cockfights to the couple driving on vacation. I found some stories to be quiet in their content and theme and others more jarring—but the constant behind all of them was the near-mythical pull that Hawaii has on its people. 

3 Guidebooks

As for the guidebooks—I found all three essential.

Frommer's Hawaii

The Frommer’s Hawaii guidebook provides an excellent high-level overview for planning .

The author writes from the perspective of what the average tourist would want to know. It offered a great starting point to help me figure out where I wanted to go and how I could stretch my vacation time across so many excellent options. 

Oahu Revealed & The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook

Once I had the rough plan for my trip down – seven days in Oahu and seven in Kauai – I read Andrew Doughty’s highly rated guidebooks, Oahu Revealed and The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook . 

I found them both to be a love letter to all things beautiful, natural, and adventurous for each island.

Doughty’s content goes deep— detailing hidden beaches and trails—and does not steer away from the highly adventurous , such as hikes through lava tube tunnels, info on swimming with sharks, and where to rent a Harley.

Reading his books made me feel the meager week I gave to stay on each island was laughably short. Silly me.

3 Additional Fiction Picks

In addition to the two books I list in my “ favorites ” section above, I read three other Hawaii-related works of fiction.

Another fiction book I read—or listened to—related to my Hawaii trip was Moloka’i by Alan Brennert.

Initially, I did not want put this book in my queue. It takes place at the turn of the 20th-century and tells the story of a very young Hawaiian girl diagnosed with what, at the time, was known as Ma’i Pake, which we recognize today as Hansen’s disease, or leprosy. Once diagnosed, she is forcibly separated from her family and relocated to the leper colony on Moloka’i.

At the time of reading I was looking for my books to provide uplift . I was not in the right mindset, given it was early 2021 and we were still in the midst of the pandemic, to want absorb a book focused on the individual and collective tragedy of the Hawaiian people. 

Of course, I was wrong to try to bypass it . Like so many stories that center around calamity, there are moments of hope and renewal seeded in between the sadness. And there are few things more relatable than that.

This telling provides a gentle recounting of the personal and the shared trauma leprosy wrought on the Hawaiian population as it decimated its ranks and struck fear in communities. I listened to this book as part of an attempt to better understand the complex history of the paradise I had just visited. 

Because I initially was not excited about reading this story, I chose to listen to it as an audiobook, so I could passively “read” it as I drove, cooked, and did laundry. It turned out this was a lucky choice. The audiobook was excellent, and I highly recommend it.

Wai-nani: Voice from Old Hawaii

The book, Wai-nani: a Voice from Old Hawaii , was gifted to me by the author, Andrea Ballou, who came across this article and wanted me to consider including it. And since I enjoyed it, I am sharing it.

Although this book is a work of fiction and nearly mythological in its style —I liked that it covers a time in Hawaii before colonization .

The story focuses on the main character Wai-nani. She is a defiant young Hawaiian woman who refuses to abide by or, when compliant, continues to push at the limits society with which binds her.

The story and her character are loosely based on Ka’ahumanu , the chief wife and trusted advisor of the great Hawaiian warrior king, Kamehameha (Makaha, in the story).

Additionally, the book shares a great introduction to Hawaiian myths, which helped me better understand how interconnected the land, the ocean, and the creatures that live in it are to Hawaiian culture.

My “bonus fiction book” is Hawaii , by James Michener. I read it nearly ten years ago. 

I am a big fan of the oversize epic historical fiction novels for which authors like Michener, Rutherford, Follet, Wouk, and Clavell are known. I have read tons of them. And I found Michener’s Hawaii consistent with—albeit a bit fluffier—than his other works.

However, and sadly, its content—especially when it comes to multi-cultural relations— does not age well . The book also provides more coverage of the missionary settler and haole histories than the other books I read. 

3 Non-Fiction Recommendations

For non-fiction, I read three books.

Sea People: The Puzzle of Polynesia

We picked Sea People: The Puzzle Of Polynesia as our family audiobook, which also happened to be highly rated, similar to the other books on this list.

We  typically pick one book to listen to with the kids related to our destination. And we thought this one would be fascinating for all of us – because it answers the question, how DID the Polynesians settle such distant and far removed islands? 

With careful attention to history, geography, and archeology—the book breaks the question down and address how it has been incorrectly answered by the prevailing powers over generations . 

If you have been fortunate enough to fly over the expanse of the Pacific Ocean, and this is a question you have wondered, then this is a book worth checking out. The narration was well-done, and we enjoyed listening to and learning from it as a family as we drove around the islands.

The Three-Year Swim Club

I only learned about The Three-Year Swim Club once I returned home. A friend who grew up in Oahu recommended the book after I shared with her what I had already read.

The book focuses on a group of poor Japanese and Filipino plantation workers’ children who first learn to swim in an irrigation ditch and eventually rise through the ranks to compete as Olympic contenders internationally. Though, with the onset of WWII, many of their dreams are derailed permanently, or delayed until after the wars ends.

I had already read and thoroughly enjoyed the Olympic underdog triumph novel  The Boys In The Boat . And I was aware of the terrible working conditions on the island sugar and produce plantations in Shark Dialogues , so I was very interested in checking this book out. 

The story is true—and its drama is enveloping. And the struggle of Coach Sakamoto and his swimmers to succeed despite the odds, setbacks, and prejudice, is inspiring.

Waterman: The Life and Times of Duke Kahanamoku

In the book The Three Year Swim Club , the figure of Duke Kahanamoku looms large. Although his part in the story is more of a cameo, it was enough to want me to learn more about him. So, I found this biography— Waterman: The Life And Times Of Duke Kahanamoku —and read it. 

I first heard Duke’s name before our trip when I booked an hour-long family surfing lesson with a man named Sparky in Oahu, and he told me to meet him at the Duke statue on Waikiki Beach. 

Knowing nothing about the surf or swim history of Hawaii—I did not understand who the Duke was, or what his statue was commemorating. And because I had not been to Waikiki Beach since I was 15, and could not remember much from that trip, I looked it up.

Duke was celebrated for being the first Hawaiian, as well as Pacific Islander, to become a champion Olympic swimmer , as well as the father to the 20th-century surfing movement . Additionally, Duke was known for his great humility and sportsmanship. 

His story of being a trailblazer is a fascinating one.  Especially as his life straddled all that was old and new in Hawaii . 

Duke was born at the end of the 19th-century in the Kingdom of Hawaii before the United States annexed it. And he came of age as an internationally renowned athlete as a resident of a U.S. Territory.

He witnessed statehood, traveled the world as a celebrated swimmer and surfer, and tried to make it in a Hollywood not yet ready to embrace an actor of color, all while witnessing the waning of his Hawaiian people and culture.

The book provides insight not only into his life, his achievements, and struggles—but also of a drastically changed Hawaii.

Although, I appreciate non-fiction books a great deal, as a category, they put me to sleep if I read them before bed. So, I almost exclusively “read” non-fiction by listening to them as audiobooks .

If you cannot borrow the audiobook from your local library—consider purchasing an Audible membership . I have one, and we save a ton as my husband and I pick and share new books every few weeks.

I had the privilege to live in Hawaii for two years, and after traveling all over the state, I can say that Kauai might be my favorite Hawaiian island. Everyone already knows about Kauai’s pristine beaches and gorgeous green mountains, but how about some more unique things to do in Kauai, or what to do in Kauai when it rains?

My top suggestion is to make a journey to Kauai’s only bookstore, Talk Story Bookstore.

Visiting local bookstores is one of the best ways to be a responsible traveler to the Hawaiian islands . It allows you to support the local economy, plus you’re likely to stumble across some great reads (make sure you check out my list of the 15 books set in Hawaii you must read ) that will give you insight into and appreciation for local culture and history.

I’ve been to some fantastic bookstores on Hawaii’s Big Island and some must-visit indie bookstores on O’ahu , but I have a special place in my heart for Kauai’s Talk Story Bookstore.

In this guide, I’ll tell you all about this unique indie bookstore, why you should visit, and how to get there.

What makes Talk Story Bookstore Unique?

Talk Story Bookstore is an awesome independent bookstore located in Hanapepe, on the southern coast of Kauai. It’s honestly a delight to browse around here and makes a perfect rainy day activity in Kauai. You’ll find so many charming details in this beautiful indie bookshop, including a tape outline of a body in the mystery section, a door-turned-Tardis, and even an electrical box disguised as a flux capacitor.

If you haven’t lived in Hawaii before and aren’t familiar with the expression “Talk Story,” it’s a phrase used commonly in Hawaii meaning to slow down, chat with friends and family, share stories, and develop friendships and community. In a culture that has largely been an oral storytelling culture, talking stories is an important and beloved tradition in Hawaii even today.

At this Kauai bookstore, you can expect to find both new and used books at very reasonable prices. You can find any of the major book genres here, including a great children’s book selection, and an impressive selection of local fiction and Hawaiian. You’ll also find records, comic books, and DVDs.

As I mentioned, Hawaii has some really cool bookstores , but there are a few things that make Talk Story Bookstore unique:

• It’s the westernmost bookstore in the US
• It’s the only bookstore in Kauai
• It’s run by a bookstore cat

Alright, let’s break these points down a little further.

The Westernmost Bookstore in the US

Talk Story Bookstore is, in fact, the westernmost bookstore in the United States. Kauai is the westernmost of the main Hawaiian islands, which is the westernmost state in the US, so Talk Story Bookstore gets to boast that title (and they do!).

On that Western theme, just looking at the outside of Talk Story Bookstore, you’d think it came straight out of Tombstone, Arizona rather than Hawaii. This Hawaii bookstore has a distinctly Western facade, with a saloon-like wooden exterior. It’s actually an ode to Kauai’s plantation town history, although Hanapepe itself was one of the few towns on Kauai that was not created by sugarcane plantations .

An interesting fact about Hanapepe is it was, supposedly the real-life inspiration for Lilo’s hometown in the Disney movie, Lilo & Stitch. Hanapepe is a cool town to visit because it still retains that authentic old feel of old-world Kauai.

Kauai’s Only Bookstore

Owner Ed Justus opened up Talk Story Bookstore in 2004 when met with an interesting proposition: he was offered a month’s free rent to open up a business, any business, in the then-vacant Hanapepe building. As Ed had a lot of books and records already, he decided to open up Kauai’s only bookstore. Almost twenty years later, it still stands, attracting visitors from all over the globe.

Other bookstores have opened and closed during that time, but Talk Story has remained a constant for Kauai residents and tourists. Owner Ed has won 19 business awards, and Talk Story Bookstore has become the #1 shopping destination on Kauai according to TripAdvisor.

Talk Story Bookstore is Run By a Bookstore Cat

Okay, obviously the cat doesn’t really run Talk Story Bookstore, but it is the boss. If you visit this Kauai bookstore, you’ll notice a cat throne behind the register letting everyone know that the cat is the boss in this bookstore.

At the time that I visited, Talk Story Bookstore was still ruled over by cat Mochi-Celeste. Celeste, as she was known for short, inspired a line of sassy cat stickers, a cute children’s book, and even her own dedicated Instagram page . Sadly, this beloved bookstore cat passed away in 2022. After a period of mourning for Celeste, the owners brought in a new feline bookstore boss, Natalie, to keep workers in line and customers company.

Talk Story Bookstore is everything you want from an indie bookshop: it’s well-curated, aesthetically creative, and it just feels welcoming. The owner, Ed, works right there in the shop (he was our cashier), and the store sells original artwork by local artists, including the owner’s wife (he personally thanked me for supporting his wife’s artwork when I purchased one of her old dictionary art prints).

How to get to Talk Story Bookstore

Talk Story Bookstore in Hanapepe is just 20 miles from Kauai’s airport in Lihue. It’s easy to reach Talk Story Bookstore, just a 30-minute drive from the airport via Kaumualiʻi Highway.

Talk Story Bookstore is a great, unique thing to do in Kauai and makes a natural stop on your way to Waimea Canyon , the Grand Canyon of Hawaii.

This independent bookstore is also only a 4-minute drive from Kauai’s Glass Beach, popular because it is covered in tiny pieces of colored sea glass (if you visit, make sure you leave the sea glass behind; don’t take it with you!).

Finding Accommodations in Kauai

As you look for somewhere to stay, I recommend checking for lodging on Hotels.com . I almost always book my accommodations through Hotels.com , because you can earn rewards for every night you stay without having to choose only one hotel chain to be loyal to. You can even book locally owned apart hotels and bed and breakfasts.

If you’re looking for privately owned vacation rentals, I recommend checking VRBO. I’ve personally had much better experiences with their owners and rentals than I have with their primary competitor.

Travel Resources At-A-Glance

All of the following are links to sites and services I actually use to book and plan my travel or to purchase books or travel gear.

For flights : Skyscanner is my number one go-to resource for booking flights. I love using the “explore” function to find the cheapest places I can fly during a given time or using the fare calendar to identify the cheapest days to fly.

For hotels and lodgings : For hotels, hotels.com , and for vacation rentals, VRBO.com . I’ve had much better experiences with private rentals through this website than through other popular private vacation rental websites.

For car rentals : Kayak allows comparisons across a wide range of booking agencies and lists reviews of companies as well. I’ve found this to be the most user-friendly and efficient way to compare car rental prices.

For tours & excursions : Viator and Get Your Guide are my top choices for booking excursions and tour experiences in a new destination.

For travel gear : Amazon.com and REI for more outdoorsy items. Check out my travel gear recs here.

For booking trains & buses : I find the Omio app and website to be the most easily navigable for comparing options for public transportation, especially in Europe,

Best travel credit card : My favorite travel rewards credit card for European travel has been the Chase Sapphire Rewards card . Visa is accepted just about everywhere in Europe, and there are no foreign transaction fees on the card. Some of the travel benefits I love on the Chase Sapphire include free TSA pre-check or Global Entry (worth it every time), an annual $200 travel credit, an annual $200 hotel benefit, built-in rental car, and trip insurance, and points are worth 50% more when used to book travel. I travel around Europe a LOT, and I end up with many free flights and hotel stays from using my points on my Chase Sapphire.

For books : Bookshop.org often has prices as good as Amazon or sometimes better, but profits go to indie bookstores all over the country. Whenever possible, consider buying your books from this online indie bookshop resource.

The Hawaii tourism department of course wants you to visit their state, and they’ll give you plenty of goods reasons to do so!

They have a number of travel guides available that are free. One for each of the islands. The travel guides for the main islands are magazine-style. (That’s for Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.) For the smaller islands, it’s a smaller brochure. (That’s for Molokai and Lanai.) For the magazine-style travel guides, this means you can expect gorgeous blown up images that will make you dream of Hawaii even more!

One of the most popular series of Hawaii guidebooks for each of the main Hawaiian islands is this series of guidebooks .

The books in the Hawaii Revealed series give you a lot of information about your chosen island, and you’ll be given loads of ideas of things to do to stay active in Hawaii.

One of the negatives about this series is that you may find recommendations for trespassing in order to get to certain places. It may be best to not follow this kind of advice, or if you do so, do so at your own risk! Hawaii does have a lot of areas that are deemed off limits but seem to be frequently visited by locals, and even some tourists. Use your best judgement, and always respect the land and the people.

That said, it’s very possible that you can have the best Hawaii vacation ever with a Hawaii Revealed book! These guidebooks often receive high praise from visitors.

These guide books all cover a lot of ground and explore each of the major Hawaiian islands. Any of these will make a good travel companion and are packed full of tips and suggestions to help you enjoy your time here. 

The Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook

If you only bring one thing to the Big Island THIS is what you want to bring along. This one book made our first vacation 10 times better. When we created this site to help bring the treasures of the Island to the web, this book was the benchmark. If it’s on the island its in the book. It has the authors’ personality and obviously is their opinion but we found most of their assessments were spot on. Some of the other books below are nice add ons but this has to be the first book you start with in your guidebooks. We know you’ll thank us later.

Lonely Planet Hawaii

Lonely Planet is one of the best-known names in the guide book game for good reason – they always put out quality information that will lead you to unique and memorable destinations all across the world. This guide book is focused on all things Hawaii and is recommended because it takes both a budget and luxury approach to travel here. 

The book features many full-color detailed maps, sample itineraries for each island, and reviews of hotels, restaurants, and a whole lot more. If you only read one guide book before or during your trip to Hawaii, this would be the one. It also provides a good background on the islands’ history and culture, which is essential to understand before coming here. 

Fodor’s Essential Hawaii

This is another excellent guide book for your Hawaiian adventures. A nice feature about this book is that locals wrote a large portion of the content. That means you’ll get genuine insight from the people that live here, not just a summary of other traveler’s experiences. This comes in useful when you want to venture off the beaten path or discover some of the best food or experiences away from the resort crowd. 

It’s also packed full of beautiful photos, over 40 maps, and sample itineraries. You’ll also get a crash course in some Hawaiian phrases to use that can help you show thanks and respect to the locals you meet during your stay. Fodor provides you with another in-depth resource that will give you more than enough to explore throughout this book’s 592 pages. 

Frommer’s Hawaii 2020

This is another option from one of the big names in travel publishing. Frommer’s Hawaii 2020 is a recent edition with plenty of quality information to keep you busy on your trip. It covers a wide range of attractions and activities, from the best beaches and hikes to some fine dining and world-class lodging across all of the major islands. This one is a bit more adventure-oriented with tips for exploring the jungles, oceans, beaches, and forests.

Another highlight of Hawaii 2020 is a section on money-saving tips. This can be useful for any traveler to Hawaii whether you are trying to camp or staying at a 5-star resort. Many maps and itineraries are scattered across the book, and though it lacks in the historical department a bit compared to the other options above, it’s still a useful resource.

If you have the chance to visit multiple islands during your trip to Hawaii, consider yourself lucky. If you only have time for a single island, don’t fret, you’re still in for a fantastic experience, and these island-specific guide books can help you out. 

Fodor’s Big Island of Hawaii

The island of Hawaii is also known as The Big Island. It’s by far the largest of the islands and has a smaller population than Oahu or Maui. I’m going to include a few good books here to serve as a guide to the unique history and culture of the Hawaiian islands. Learning about Hawaii before visiting is thoroughly recommended to provide you with essential background and increased respect. 

Captive Paradise: A History of Hawaii

This is a great look into the history of Hawaii and its current culture. James L. Haley paints a vivid picture of these islands and how they have changed over the years. From the rule of King Kamehameha I to the controversial annexation of Hawaii into the United States, this book is well-written and informative. It’s a highly recommended read for any visitor wishing to understand these islands and their people better. 

Hawaii: A Novel

This a book that is intimidating in size but enlightening in scope. It’s an epic look at the history of Hawaii, as told by James Michener. The book reads like a novel but paints an accurate historical picture of the first settlers of Hawaii with their beliefs and tribulations fueling a journey into unknown seas under unknown stars. It follows this history into more modern times, and even though this was written in 1959, it still holds up strong. 

If you take the time to read a few of these books before your trip to Hawaii, you’ll be better informed and be able to take full advantage of everything the land and sea here have to offer. Be sure to bring at least one of the above along with you as well – a good guidebook is essential reading for every island adventure.

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

The United States hosts around 1,000 marathons every year, the largest of which see tens of thousands of endurance runners crossing the finish line and conquering the grueling 26.2-mile distance.

To find the top races, USA TODAY 10Best editors and a panel of experts made their nominations, then readers voted for their favorites. Here are the 10 best marathons across the nation for 2024.

No. 10: Hatfield McCoy Marathon - Williamson, West Virginia

The longest-running marathon in the states of Kentucky and West Virginia is the popular Hatfield McCoy Marathon, which traverses both states on its journey. Named after the infamous Hatfield-McCoy feud, the challenging course takes runners through the rugged and beautiful Appalachian Mountains and includes both road and trail sections. 

No. 9: Honolulu Marathon - Honolulu, Hawaii

After New York, Chicago, and Boston, this is the fourth largest marathon in the United States. It's tropically scenic and warm, and there's no time limit, so everyone is allowed to finish, making it a great first-time marathon race. The course runs through downtown Honolulu and its famed Christmas lights, through Waikiki and up around Diamond Head, to a stunning oceanside finish in Kapiolani Park. The post-race treats are also legendary, with everyone getting fresh Hawaiian malasadas (scrumptious local versions of donuts dusted with sugar).

No. 8: Bank of America Chicago Marathon - Chicago, Illinois

One of the six World Marathon Majors, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is typically held on the second Sunday in October. The flat, fast course takes runners past iconic Chicago landmarks on its journey through 29 neighborhoods, starting and finishing in Grant Park. This popular race attracts more than a million spectators each year.

No. 7: Shiprock Marathon - Shiprock, New Mexico

Held the first weekend of May, the Shiprock Marathon takes runners through the rugged desert landscapes of the Navajo Nation. Along the way, participants enjoy a variety of live music to motivate runners, adding to this unique and memorable running experience. 

No. 6: CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon - Indianapolis, Indiana

CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon is a good qualifying event, as the USATF-certified course is flat and fast. You'll run through the heart of Indianapolis' historic neighborhoods and enjoy Hoosier hospitality before finishing near the Indiana State House. With a November date, you'll get crisp fall weather, and the final stretch is all downhill, so this is a great marathon for first-time long-distance aspirants. 

No. 5: Coast Guard Marathon - Elizabeth City, North Carolina

If you've ever wanted a running tour of a military base, this one's for you. The Coast Guard Marathon runs through the U.S. Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City, along the Pasquotank riverfront, and even takes participants on the runway and around one of the last standing WWII airship hangars. Registration is open to both military personnel and civilians. 

No. 4: Big Sur International Marathon - Big Sur, California

Famed for its stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged coastline, and picturesque scenery, the Big Sur International Marathon is a favorite among runners and nature lovers alike. In addition to breathtaking vistas, this challenging course features significant elevation changes on its route from Big Sur, north along Highway 1, to the finish line in Carmel. The USATF-certified course has been called “one of the jewels of American running.”

No. 3: Marine Corps Marathon - Arlington, Virginia

Known as "The People's Marathon," the Marine Corps Marathon honors the dedication and sacrifice of the United States Armed Forces. The race is known for its rich history and is one of the largest marathons in the world. With a course that winds through the streets of Arlington, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., the route passes many of the area's famous landmarks and monuments, including the National Mall and the U.S. Capitol.

No. 2: New York City Marathon - New York City, New York

Known for its enthusiastic crowd support, the famous New York City Marathon embodies the spirit and energy of the city where it takes place. A celebration of diversity and inclusivity, runners from all over the world come together to participate in this iconic event. The course takes runners through all five boroughs of the city, starting in Staten Island and finishing in Central Park. Along the way, runners pass by many of the city's famous landmarks, including the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the Empire State Building, and Times Square.

No. 1: Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon - Cincinnati, Ohio

The Flying Pig Marathon is loved by runners, and for good reason. It's fun, with pig motifs used everywhere, from the "pig pen" corrals where different speed groups are segregated, to crossing the "finish swine" and attending the post-race party with pizza and beer. The course is also super attractive, albeit hilly, running through the most diverse and scenic neighborhoods of Cincinnati and surrounding townships, and alongside the Ohio River. Finishers get medals and mylar blankets to go with all the post-pig party refreshments.
