Bhadrachalam (Telugu: భద్రాచలం) is a major pilgrim town on the banks of the Godavari River in Telangana in Southern India .

Understand [ edit ]

The main attraction is the temple of Sri Ram built by Kancharla Gopanna, popularly known as Bhakta Ramadas, in 1630 AD. Ramdas was then tax revenue collector (also called as Tahsildar). He collected money from people to build this temple and when the collections were not sufficient, used tax collections and consequently was jailed for 12 years by the king Tani Shah of Golconda (now Hyderabad ). Moved by the plight of his devotee Sri Ram and his brother, Laxmana repaid the money owed to the king and got Ramadas released.

Two festivals are most important at Bhadrachalam:

• Annual Kalyanotsavam on the eve of Sri Rama navami, during Sri Rama Navami(March-April) there is a huge influx of pilgrims not only from Andhra districts, but also from other distant places to attend the wedding of Lord Rama with Sita.
• Vaikunta Ekadasi (Mukkoti). Sree Seetaramachandra swamy will give darshan through the Vaikuntha dwaram on the eve of Mukkoti(December–January)

By plane [ edit ]

The nearest international airport is Hyderabad and domestic airport is Vijayawada .

By car [ edit ]

From Hyderabad follow this route: Hyderabad – Suryapet – Khammam – Kothagudem – Palvancha - Bhadrachalam. Buses ply from Vijayawada and other major towns in Andhra Pradesh.

By train [ edit ]

The nearest railway station is Bhadrachalam Road (station code: BDCR), 40 km from the town. Locally, Bhadrachalam Road Railway Station is more commonly referred to as Kothagudem Railway Station. It takes approximately 50 minutes to travel from Kothagudem Railway Station to Bhadrachalam by bus and the fare is about ₹20. Bhadrachalam is:

• 120 km from district head quarters, Khammam
• 325 km from the state head quarters, Hyderabad

Machilipatnam/Manuguru express (Train No:17050/12752) at Secunderabad Station every day at 10:45PM. You should buy a ticket up to Kothagudem (Bhadrachalam Road). The train reaches Kothagudem at 4:45AM. From there you can take a bus to Bhadrachalam. There are lots of buses from just outside Kothagudem station. Bus fare is around ₹20. You can reach Bhadrachalam Town in 50 minutes. While returning you can take Train No:0340(Link Secunderabad Express) from Kothagudem. It departs from there at 10:15PM.

By bus [ edit ]

It will be around 315 km from the capital city Hyderabad. The tourism department buses also ply to Bhadrachalam. It will take you non-stop with a break at the Guest House on the Highway near Narketpally. It will be a 7 hours journey from Hyderabad to Bhadrachalam. Suppose if you start from Hyderabad at 10PM, you will reach by 5AM the next day.

The courtesy and the behaviour of the temple administration are excellent. You can feel that everyone there is ready to extend cooperation, and they talk to you politely. Perhaps it is the manners of Sri Rama embedded into atmosphere.

Get around [ edit ]

Three wheeler taxis (called 'auto rickshaws') can be found everywhere, clogging the streets of Bhadrachalam. They don’t carry meters, so fares are to be bargained based on distance (or your perception of it). Fares to temple areas are ₹10-15 per person (August 2013). Never book an auto rickshaw in advance for trips to the temple as the Darshan (to see the deity) time may vary depending on demand and day of the week (Mondays, Tuesdays and weekends are busy). You can always find auto rickshaws once your Darshan is over.

• Bhadrachala Rama Temple . Is the main temple complex and the abode of Lord Sri Ram – it also has smaller temples of other gods and goddesses. Temples of Lord Shiva, Panchamukha Anjaneyala and Narasimha are quite close by. The temple is kept open from 4AM in the morning for Suprabatha Seva, rests till 8AM and reopens to stay till 1PM. The temple usually remains closed during the noon hours, and reopens in the evening at 4PM. The temple will be closed in the night after the last pujas (Pavalimpu Seva) are performed by 9PM.  
• Tiny museum within the temple complex has jewellery Ramdas and others got made for deities of this temple. (The dates of Ramdas’ and Abul Hassan Tanasha's birth and death given on their painted portraits indicate that Ramdas lived for 32 years and Tanasha for 17 years which is rubbish.)

• Edicts made by Ramadas on stone guiding administration of the temple, poojas and other rituals are inside the temple complex written in Telugu.
• Parnasala is a popular (nearby) place frequently visited by tourists and is 35 km from Bhadrachalam. This is said to be the place where Ravan abducted Sita. A small hut with gaudily painted sculptures of Sri Ram, Sita, Laxman and Ravan depicting key events from Ramayan is what Parnasala is about. This place has great historical importance but weathered sculptures, attempt to replicate the sculptures with fiber glass, lack of maintenance make it a little less satisfied experience. However, passing through tiny tribal hamlets and expansive fields of paddy by a spooky tree lined road plus the serene Godavari River are the saving grace. Its would be a worth while to visit this place if you plan to spend at least 2 or 3 days in Badrachalam. Avoid recommendations from local guides about this place and make your own call.

• Papikondalu Hills - a steam boat ride on River Godavari enjoying views of the River and setting sun. Available as a package of one day including 5 to 7 hours of boat ride. Diesel-powered boats start from Sriramagiri, about 60 km from Bhadrachalam. They offer breakfast, tea, lunch and evening snacks on the boat itself, except lunch where they make special arrangements on the way to papikondalu on the shores of Godavari. The taste & hygiene of the food is good. On the way you can also see the Perantallapally, a temple of Lord Shiva, where you can find a small water fall coming from the thick forests. A sage used to meditate in this forest. You should maintain utmost silence in the temple. You should not offer any thing (like donations etc.). The environment is peaceful. If you have the time, you can do meditation here. On the way you can also visit Sriramagiri temple (58 km. from Bhadrachalam). It is always better to take water, fruit and food with you on the steam boat ride. You have to be cautious before planning trip to Papikondalu during summer as the water levels in River Godavari may cancel the boat trips.
• Bogotha Waterfalls, during rainy season, 115 km away.
• Palem Resevoir: 101 km away.

• Visit the main temple.
• Sit and absorb the atmosphere in the peaceful (on working days) temple premises.
• Perform different types of pooja – fees for which can be paid right outside the main temple.
• Attend sessions of Kirtanas written by Ramadas and others in honor of Sri Ram (after 8PM)
• Walk along river Godavari through tiny hamlets if the weather is pleasant.

Prasadam (food offered to the main deity of the temple) sold outside the main entrance can be a good breakfast as well – especially Laddu, Chakrapongali, Pulihora and Patikabellam (misri) are sold at nominal price right in the temple complex.

For breakfast go to Veeranna Hotel near Amba satram to have delicious idly with spicy Ginger chutney.

For lunch there is mess at Tata gudi centre to have delicious Telugu vegetarian food.

Most restaurants are near bus station and offer the same food fare. Cuisine is South Indian ‘thali' and normal South Indian snacks like Idli, Vada, Poori and Dosa.

Tea and coffee (always with milk) are served in small stainless steel tumblers – tend to be cloyingly sweet unless otherwise specified.

Branded bottled water (also referred to as Mineral Water, which it isn't) of well known brands are available all over the town.

It is considered to be a holy place. Drinking alcohol may not be a suggested activity here.

• Devastanam (temple administration) accommodation offers good value: Sita Nilayam (also called ‘vanda gadulu’)is one such located near the main temple, - several new and big rooms costing between ₹200 and ₹350 with A/C. No room service. If all the rooms are booked enquire about other so called 'cottages'
• Hotel Kalki, Godavari, Gitanjali are other smaller hotels.
• State run Punnami Bhadrachalam has dormitories for ₹150.

Hotel "Sudarshan Residency" just opposite to the temple is also a good choice. A/c Double Occupancy costs at ₹1100/- and this hotel is well maintained. The advantage of this hotel is, it is just opposite to the temple and walkable to both temple and river Godavari.

Mid-range [ edit ]

• State run Punnami Bhadrachalam has A/C Suites at ₹1400 to ₹1500 and non A/C rooms at ₹800. (Phone No. 08743231463). This is the best hotel in Bhadrachalam town.
• Hotel Ratan , near the Bus Stand - has decent ambience and reasonably clean rooms - twin rooms. It is somewhat noisy with constantly ringing phones resounding through the hotel building (especially in the nights).

Bus station is on the main road where most hotels and restaurants are. Do check the room you are offered before you pay up.

Bhadrachalam town has a clearly documented history of Lord Sri Rama temple, which was constructed in the 17th Century CE. According to mythology, the present town was once part of the Dandakaranya forest, which Lord Sri Rama, Sita and Lakshmana had visited during their exile. The jungle, which is now in the vicinity of the temple, was the place for Rama’s retreat and a place called Parnasala, which is 32 km away, was the location where Rama built a dwelling for himself and Sita. It was here that Sita was abducted by Lanka ruler, Ravana. The famous temple at Bhadrachalam is home to the Archa Murthy’s of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana and their idols are believed to be swayambhu i.e. self-manifested ones.

Bhadrachalam temple, popularly known as Lord Sree Sita Ramachandra Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. Situated in the temple town of Bhadrachalam in Khammam district of Telangana, this temple is one of the most important Hindu temples of the region. The area of Bhadrachalam is circumscribed by the Holy river Godavari which enhances the overall charm of this place. Located at a distance of 300 kilometers from the state capital, Hyderabad, Bhadrachalam temple is visited by thousands of devotees every day.

The main attractions of the temple are the grand celebrations that are organised here. The annual Brahmotsavam festival and the Sri Sitarama Thirukalyana Mahotsavam, celebrated on the eve of Rama Navami are the major festivals celebrated in the Bhadrachalam temple. Other important festivals celebrated here include Vaikuntha Ekadashi, Vijayadashami and Vasanthotsavam.

Legend of the Temple

There are several legends associated with the Bhadrachalam temple, one of them suggests that the significance of this temple dates back to the Ramayana Era. It is believed that Lord Rama with his consort Sita and brother Lakshama spent some time at Parnasala, a village near Bhadrachalam temple during their 14 years of exile. This is also the same place where Sita was abducted by Ravana. A Rishi named Bhadra who used to live there was a great devotee of Lord Rama. Overwhelmed with his devotion, Lord Rama promised him moksha but never managed to make good on his promise during the Ramavataram. But Bhadra continued his penance on the banks of the Godavari River which pleased Lord Vishnu and he appeared before Bhadra in the form of Rama. Lord Vishnu came with the intention of giving him moksha. He appeared with his four celestial arms. He was holding Shankha and Sudarshan chakra in upper arms and a bow and an arrow in the lower hands. While Sita was sitting on his left thigh, his brother Lakshmana was standing to his left. Rama granted him salvation and turned him into a hillock which is now referred to as Bhadradri. This form of Rama came to be known as Vaikuntha Rama and Rama Narayana (the union of Rama and Vishnu).

The Bhadrachalam temple has the idols of the Vaikuntha Rama with a bow and a conch, depicting both Lord Vishnu and Lord Rama at the same time. The idol of Sita sitting on the lap of Lord Rama is a rare sight.

Another myth related to the Bhadrachalam temple is about Pokala Dhammaka, a tribal woman who was a passionate devotee of Lord Rama. According to folklore, one night Lord Rama appeared in her dream and told her about the idols that existed on the Bhadragiri hills. The next day, she went there and found the idols inside an anthill. She poured countless number of pots of Godavari water over the anthill to uncover the idols. She started worshipping the deities there and one day Lord Rama told her that a temple will be constructed at this very site by one of his devotees. That devotee was Bhakta Ramadas who constructed the Bhadrachalam temple in the year 1674 A.D.

Architecture of the Bhadrachalam Temple

The magnificent architecture of the Bhadrachalam temple will leave you enchanted. The temple has four entrances and the temple complex is divided into three parts. The first part is a temple dedicated to the head of Bhadra. Inside this temple, there is a rock structure of Bhadra’s head. This structure has a footprint on it which is believed to be that of Lord Rama’s. The second part is a shrine where the presiding deity of the temple resides and the third is the main tower or rajagopuram located at Bhadra’s feet.

On the top of the shrine or the sanctum, a Sudarshana Chakra is engraved. Gopanna found this eight-faced chakra with thousand corners in the Godavari river. The idols of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana are seated to the right of the sanctum. These idols are worshipped every day. A gold plated flag post or dwajasthambam can be seen right opposite the sanctum. Made up of panchaloha, the flag contains images of Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu.

This hill range located in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh is a sight to behold. This mountain range got its name from the Telugu word which translates to “partition”. This is because the hill looks like the partition that women make in the hair from an aerial view. Papikondalu is adorned with a wide variety of natural vegetation and wildlife. Papi kondalu wild life sanctuary is home to numerous animals including spotted deer, tigers, jackals, panthers, antelopes and various species of birds.  2. Abhaya Anjaneya Temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The temple is renowned for its artefacts and sculptures. The sculptures and carvings of the deities are extremely stunning and add to the beauty and divinity of the temple. The sculptures of gods and goddess are carved along the border of the temple. Abhaya anjaneya temple witnesses a crowd of devotees from around the country especially during Tuesdays which is considered as the day of Lord Hanuman. The positive aura and the beautiful surroundings makes it a must-visit place while in the town.

3. Parnasala

A popular village situated at a distance of about 32 kilometers from Bhadrachalam is an important place of tourist attraction. This village has religious significance as it is believed that Lord Rama along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshama had stayed in this village during their exile. A small hut known as shoka Rama with beautiful sculptures of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana is a major attraction of this place.

  4. Sabari

Sabari is a river that joins the river Godavari before becoming one with the sea. There is a very interesting story behind the formation of this river. It is believed that sabari or Dhammakka, a tribal woman was a great devotee of Lord Rama, was immortalised as this river. Owing to her extreme devotion towards Lord Rama, she was granted salvation by him. Hence she took the form of a river. Each year during the month of October, a festival called Sabari Smruti Yatra is organised to celebrate Sabari’s devotion towards Lord Rama. Adivasis from different tribal communities participate in this religious procession. There are numerous ceremonies organised during the yatra.

By Railways : Bhadrachalam railway station, located at a distance of 40 kilometers from the main town is the closest rail head to reach Bhadrachalam temple. At a distance of 2 km from Bhadrachalam Bus Station, Sri Sita Rama Temple is a magnificent temple situated close to the banks of River Godavari. Bhadrachalam is a major pilgrim town in Telangana . Parnasala, near Bhadrachalam is believed to be the place where Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana stayed during their 14-year exile in forests. Ravana abducted Sita at this place in the absence of Rama and Lakshmana. This temple was built by Kancherla Gopanna popularly known as Bhakta Ramadasu in the year of 1630 AD. Gopanna was the Tahsildar of Bhadrachalam and constructed the temple using public donations. But the Golconda Sultans were misled and felt that Gopanna had misused the government funds to build the temple. He was imprisoned in a dungeon at Golconda Fort. 4 Parnasala

At a distance of 35 km from Bhadrachalam, Parnasala is a pilgrimage place situated at Parnasala village in the newly formed Bhadradri Kothagudem district (formerly in Khammam district) of Telangana, India. It is one of the several Hindu temples connected with Epic Ramayana, and among the must-include places in Bhadrachalam tour packages. Parnasala holds a significant value in mythology. According to legend, Lord Sri Rama spent some of the 14 years of exile at this location. Parnasala is said to be the place where the evil-minded demon king Ravan abducted Goddess Sita. 2 Amruthadhara Falls

At a distance of 15 km from Maredumilli Bus Stand, Amruthadhara is a beautiful waterfall situated on Rajahmundry - Bhadrachalam Highway near Maredumilli in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. It is a seasonal waterfalls and one of the must visit places in Maredumilli as part of Vizag tour packages . Amruthadhara is formed over a seasonal stream amidst forest and steep rocks. During monsoon this small waterfall is in full gush and would be a heaven for nature lovers. The waterfall is in two stages. This place is not so comfortable to take bath but one can slide. 4 Jalatharangini Waterfalls

At a distance of 7 km from Maredumilli Bus Stand, Jalatharangini is a picturesque waterfall situated on Rajahmundry - Bhadrachalam Highway at Maredumilli village of East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. It is a seasonal waterfall and also one of the must visit places in Maredumilli. Jalatharangini Waterfalls is a cascade of running water amidst forest and rocks. This is a multi-tier waterfall. During monsoon this small waterfall is in full gush and would be a heaven for nature lovers. The water of the fall is crystal clear and one can take a bath under the falls. One needs to walk 150 m to reach the falls from the entry point which takes 30 minutes. The trekking path is slippery and little strenuous. The waterfall is maintained by local tribes and they maintain the area by making steps and preparing easy Jungle path with side barricade supports. The dam is situated inside Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary. The Kinnerasani Dam was constructed in 1966 on the Kinnerasani River, one of the important tributaries of Godavari River. The dam provides water to Kothagudem Thermal Power Station at Palvoncha for power generation. It also provides irrigation facilities to the nearby farmers through lift Irrigation. Kinnerasani Dam is situated in a beautiful location surrounded by greenery and natural landscape. 2 Nelakondapalli

At a distance of 22 km from Khammam, 111 km from Nalgonda and 200 km from Hyderabad, Nelakondapalli is an important Buddhist excavation site in Telangana located in Khammam District. Nelakondapalli is a historic Buddhist site with Stupas and Buddha idols. The site was found during the excavations conducted in 1977. Excavations have unearthed foundations of brick built Viharas, wells, cisterns, a Mahastupa, a bronze idol of Buddha, a miniature Stupa carved in limestone and other materials from the third and fourth centuries. Nelakondapalli is associated with the Hindu epic Mahabharata. The Virata Raju Dibba and Keechaka Gundam, archaeological evidences from the period of the Mahabharata are located 1.6 km from Nelakondapalli.
