Big Island Waterfalls Map

Below is a map of the Big Island that shows all the waterfalls mentioned in this blog post! As you can see, most of the waterfalls are located on the east side of the Big Island .

The reason for this is because the east (Hilo) side of the island has a tropical, rainforest climate. This is the opposite of the west (Kona) side of the Big Island, which is typically sunny and dry!

You can read more about the different areas of the Big Island in my guide on Where to Stay here !

Frequently Asked Questions about Waterfalls on the Big Island

Where are the most waterfalls on the big island.

As mentioned above, most of the waterfalls are located on the eastern side of the island. More specifically, a majority are located on the Hamakua Coast, north of the main town of Hilo. This is due to the heavy rainfall and tropical landscape in the area!

Can you swim in any waterfalls on the Big Island?

You can! Unfortunately, almost all of the waterfalls you can swim in require entrance fees or guided tours. I have a whole section below on which waterfalls you can swim in!

What is the biggest waterfall on the Big Island?

The biggest waterfall on the Big Island is Hi’ilawe Falls, located in the famous Waipi’o Valley. Not only is this the biggest waterfall on the Big Island, it’s the biggest waterfall in the entire state of Hawaii!

Are there guided tours to waterfalls on the Big Island?

Yes! In fact, some waterfalls on the list can only be reached by a guided tour. I’ll cover this more later in this post!

Do all waterfalls on the Big Island have entrance fees?

Nope, not all! Some waterfalls, like Rainbow Falls, are completely free to visit! I’ll note if there are any entrance fees for each waterfall I mentioned below!

Is it safe to swim in waterfalls on the Big Island?

Unfortunately, there isn’t one straight answer here! You should always do your research before swimming in any waterfalls on the Big Island. As waterfalls are fed by rivers, they are prone to flash floods, which can be extremely dangerous.

In addition, fresh water on the Big Island can be home to leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that is often present in Hawaiian rivers and streams. In fact, Hawaii is the number one place in the United States for leptospirosis. You should absolutely steer clear of fresh water if you have open cuts or sores. Putting your head underwater also increases your risk of infection.

In general, I don’t recommend swimming in any waterfalls on your own, unless you are part of a guided tour.

Big Island Waterfalls by Category

Waterfalls on the big island that are easy to access, ‘akaka falls and kahuna falls.

Located within Akaka Falls State Park you will find the famous Akaka Falls and Kahuna Falls! This state park is located about 20 minutes north of downtown Hilo. I loved visiting these waterfalls because they were so easy to access!

To get to the waterfalls, you’ll embark on a paved, 0.4-mile loop trail through the park. Although there are some stairs and inclines, they were very mild. This park is great for the whole family!

Akaka Falls Sate Park Sign Big Island Hawaii

Along the loop trail, you can see not one but TWO waterfalls: ‘Akaka and Kahuna. ‘Akaka is definitely the more impressive of the two. You’ll get to see the falls from multiple viewpoints and can see all the way down to the bottom of the river. On the other hand, Kahuna Falls was slightly obscured by the rainforest around it when we visited.

The only downside to visiting ‘Akaka Falls State Park is the entrance and parking fee you are required to pay. For non-Hawaiian residents, the entrance cost is $5 per person for adults (children 3 and under are free). In addition to the entrance fee, you are also required to pay a parking fee of $10 . If you are driving a commercial vehicle, the cost goes up!

Rainbow Falls

Rainbow Falls is probably the easiest waterfall to access on the Big Island of Hawaii! How easy? It is literally steps from the parking lot. You don’t even have to climb any stairs to see it!

In addition to being close to the parking lot, Rainbow Falls is only 5 minutes outside of downtown Hilo ! It doesn’t get more accessible than that. Oh, and it’s free!

rainbow falls waterfalls on Big Island

However, don’t discount Rainbow Falls because it’s so easy to get to! The falls are truly stunning, especially if you get to see the iconic rainbow the falls are named after. People have seen the rainbow at all times during the day, but you’re most likely to see it on a sunny morning.

What I loved most about these falls was the Hawaiian legend behind them! It’s said that the cave behind the falls is home to the ancient Hawaiian moon goddess Hina . Hina is the mother of the demi-god Maui, and legend says that Maui saved Hina from a giant lizard at Rainbow Falls and the nearby Boiling Pots. There’s much more to the story, which you can read about on a plaque at the Falls!

Rainbow Falls Hilo Hawaii

Pe’epe’e falls

Right up the road from Rainbow Falls is Pe’epe’e Falls , which are also fed by the Wailuku River like Rainbow Falls. There are no parking or entrance fees to see Pe’epe’e Falls!

These falls are even larger and more stunning than Rainbow Falls; however, the overlook area for the falls, which can be accessed just off the road, is slightly obscured.

Previously, you could get closer to the falls and swim in the nearby Boiling Pots on days where the flow of water is calm. However, many people have been injured or killed in these swimming areas. These days, several signs have been posted in the area to prohibit individuals from getting closer to the falls or swimming in the pools. You can also be charged a fine if you go past them.

Waterfalls on the Big Island You Can Swim In

Kulaniapia falls.

In my opinion, Kulaniapia Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the Big Island! And, you can swim here!! The only catch – Kulaniapia Falls is located on private property . The property is part of a beautiful eco-friendly hotel called the Inn at Kulaniapia Falls . Staying at the Inn means you have free access to the waterfall!

The good news is, Kulaniapia Falls also offers day passes to the Falls for those who are not staying at the Inn. The passes are offered to a limited number of people each day to avoid crowds. Here’s everything you need to know about the day passes!

  • Cost of the day pass starts at $49 for adults and $29 for children
  • Pass gives you access to the property for 4-5 hours
  • 10am slot is the cheapest ($49)
  • The other times are 11am, 12pm and 1pm.
  • Day passes must be purchased in advance (no walk ups!)
  • $50 discount on other activities on the property

Kulaniapia Falls Big Island Hawaii

Photos from Booking.com

The pass will give you access to Kulaniapia Falls plus three other waterfalls and miles of trails! They also offer swimming, kayaking, and paddle boarding at the falls when thee conditions are safe.

If you are feeling extra adventurous, you can even go waterfall repelling here! This incredible activity is available to anyone 10 and older. The cost of waterfall repelling at Kulaniapia Falls is $250 per person; however, if you buy a day pass, the activity is $199. It is offered daily at 10:30am and 2:00pm and lasts 2-3 hours!

Umauma Falls

Another waterfall on the Big Island you can safely swim in is Umauma Falls! However, similar to Kulaniapia Falls, this waterfall is only accessible by private tour through the Umauma Experience.

This company offers many different ways to experience Umauma Falls from zip lining to waterfall repelling to kayaking. The best bang for your buck is definitely their Zip N Dip tour . On this tour, you’ll get to zip line on 9 runs and then relax, swim, and kayak at the waterfall. This tour starts at $300 per person and lasts 4 hours.

Zipling Over Waterfall on the Big Island

Umauma Falls Zip N Dip Adventure

  • Price: Starting at $300 per person
  • Duration: 4 hours
  • TripAdvisor Rating: 5/5 stars ⭐
  • Includes : Zip lining, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, and lunch!

If you’re looking for something a little more low key, they also have a self-paced walking tou r where you can explore the waterfalls and gardens. The cost for this activity is only $12 and doesn’t require an advanced booking.

With 5 stars on TripAdvisor, The Umauma Experience is a great way to experience the Big Island for the whole family!

Kohala Coast Waterfalls

The last of the Big Island waterfalls you can swim in are located on the Kohala Coast . Unfortunately, these waterfalls are located on private property, so you cannot visit on your own. The only way to explore these waterfalls is via a private tour like this one !

Most of the Kohala Waterfall tours leave from Kona, so this is a great option if you are staying on the west side of the Big Island and still want to explore some waterfalls!

The tour lasts approximately 7 hours and costs $240 per person. It includes round trip transportation, a guided hike through a nature preserve, swimming in waterfalls, and a picnic lunch! Another perk is that this is a small group tour, so you will have a private experience (only up to 10 people).

Waipi’o Valley Waterfalls

The last waterfalls on the Big Island I want to talk about are 2 waterfalls in the Waipi’o Valley: Hi’ilawe Falls and Kaluahine Falls . These are not easy to access, nor can you swim in them, but they are still worth mentioning!

If you didn’t know, Waipi’o is a stunning, expansive valley located on the Hāmākua Coast of the Big Island. It has a strong political and cultural history for the nation of Hawaii. The valley was home to Hawaiian royalty and was the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I.

Waipio Valley Lookout Hawaii Big Island

Waipi’o Valley is one mile across and over five miles deep. Within the valley, there is a gorgeous black sand beach and lush taro fields. Although you can view a portion of the valley from a public lookout, visitors are no longer permitted to enter the valley. This emergency rule issued in 2022 was due to the treacherous nature of the entry road getting into the valley.

As mentioned, there are two waterfalls located within the Valley. To view this waterfalls, you can either book a private tour into the valley (like this horseback riding tour ) or take a helicopter ride ! Unfortunately, there is no way to see these waterfalls on your own any longer.

Hi'ilawe Falls Big Island Hawaii

Final Thoughts

That wraps up my guide to the best waterfalls on the Big Island of Hawaii. As you can see, there are a variety of Big Island waterfalls to choose from, from jaw-dropping cascades to road-side treats!

I highly recommend staying on the Hilo side of the Big Island for at least a few days. As shown on the map at the beginning, this is where almost all of the waterfalls on the Big Island are.

Description

The Big Island Waterfalls Tour explores the lush Hamakua Coast, Waipio Valley overlook, and waterfalls on the east side of the Big Island. This full day of adventure departs from Kona and Kohala Coast resorts. You will experience some of the most breathtaking valleys and waterfalls, and see rare and exotic plants and wildlife, some can only be found on the Big Island! A knowledgeable certified local guide will teach you about the rich history, cultures, folklore, geography and much more during this guided small group tour.

The journey begins as you pass the serene Waimea town and Parker Ranch, through the quaint town of Honoka'a, and stop at the famous overlook of majestic Waipio Valley.

The tour continues the drive down the scenic Hamakua Coast and visit the towering Akaka Falls, which plummets 442 feet into a stream-eroded gorge. You will also stop to explore the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden, a spectacular nature preserve with over 2000 species of exotic plant life and cascading waterfalls to enjoy.

The highlight of the day is the stop at Kulaniapia Falls, a 120' privately owned waterfall where guests can swim in the giant natural pool at its base on MOST days. We say MOST days because swimming is based upon water levels ... sometimes after heavy rains the river is raging and while it is impressive to see this spectacle, it is not safe to enter the water. Your guide will make this call based upon current conditions.

You will return to the Kona or Kohala Coast resorts via Saddle Road, which is nestled between the world's tallest sea mountain, Mauna Kea, and world's most massive mountain Mauna Loa. In November of 2022 Mauna Loa volcano unleashed a new flow that stopped just short of this road, and from a distance you will see the youngest Mauna Loa flow and its path down the slope of the mountain.

EVERYBODY loves waterfalls, and this full-day adventure gives you the opportunity to view majestic Waipio Valley, the gorgeous Hamakua Coast and some of the most amazing waterfalls you will ever see!

This is a F U L L – D A Y excursion. Plan on being out from about 7:00am to about 5pm. The tour is limited to 13 people, so you can be sure to get a personalized experience. Umbrellas and rain jackets are provided if they are needed, but you are welcome to bring your own. Wear comfortable clothes and good walking shoes that get good traction. Latest reviews of Waterfall Tour Adventures

Fun experience.

My family did this experience. It’s quite a drive to get to this place. I did this with my husband and 2 kids (ages 12 & 9). The tour guides were really friendly and informative. They chose our horses for us based on wei ... more ght and experience. The horses know where they’re going so there’s little for the rider to do. The waterfall was very cold, deep, and there’s quite a current! Be prepared if you want to swim (we did!). They have kayaks and paddle boards if you prefer not to swim. My kids loved this experience and have been asking for horseback lessons since we got back. Bring a long sleeve shirt or light jacket just in case- we were chilly!

A great time at Umauma Falls Zipline Tour & Waterfall Swim Adventure / 9 Zipline Tour. Although it rained, it was a great time with my visiting friends. Our group had about seven total members, and we all felt include ... more d and enjoyed the adventure together. When the weather turned into rain, and the wind made the rain even more interesting... We all decided to make the most of it and enjoy the unique experience. Our Guides were friendly, informative, and humorous. They take safety seriously but they take the time to make sure you are having fun while being safe. Safety tip... "Keep your head and face to one side of the tether, or you'll get a knuckle sandwich." We will return on a sunny day to enjoy the waterfalls, but it was a great time for all, and the guides made it extra memorable.

Drew's the best!

The six if us had a great time with Drew who kept us entertained while ensuring we understood the historical and cultural importance of many of the sites we visited. The dad jokes were appreciated over the course of the ... more day travelling from Kona to Hilo and points in-between. The consensus highlight was the swim in the waterfall pool. Even the weather cooperated. Fabulous day! Mahalo Drew!

Great experience!

My hubby and I wanted to try this ATV experience since we enjoyed a similar one on Kauai the previous year and it did not disappoint! Going through the trails and seeing the sites were completely beautiful. The priva ... more te little waterfall/lagoon was also refreshing after being covered with the dust from the trail. The one thing I would have liked is a bandana to cover the lower half of my face because the dust got all up in every crevice.

ATV n Swim Beautiful

You need to check this out if you are not an experienced ATV rider, the tour guides are very patient and chill. You will arrive to a beautiful area, check in, bet your gear and go over a few house rules. HIGHLY RECOMM ... more END TO USE THE PROVIDED GOOGLES (not your sunglasses)! The road gets pretty dirt heavy and become difficult to see. It's a short ride but they take you to a small water hole where you are given the opportunity to jump off the rock and into the water and afterwards a drive back. Wear something that you can get dirty, do not wear white and do not bring items you do not want to get dirty. The dirt is like a clay color and sticks. Our tours guides were great ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Great Activity!

The zip line experience was excellent! Ages 8-45 in our group all loved it!! We weren’t sure about the waterfall swim/kayak, the kids said this was their favorite part of the time at Umauma, even better than zip lining ... more !! Highly recommended for people of almost any age!!

best big island waterfalls in hawaii with view of hiilawe falls

Some of the world’s finest waterfalls can all be found on the Big Island of Hawaii. Tropical gardens dominate the northeast coasts of Hilo and Hamakua due to the abundance of rainfall they receive.

Before we dive in, it’s worth talking about the island’s name. Most of us refer to the island as Big Island but its official name is the Island of Hawaii . I know, this is confusing because it has the same name as the state. Sometimes you’ll also hear the name Kona (especially for the coffee lovers out there) but this actually refers to a region on the west coast of the island.

Since there are so many Big Island waterfalls, we’ll divide it between the ones that you can easily get to and others where you need the help of a local guide, tour, or entry into special garden.

Big Island Waterfalls You Can Visit Yourself

With your car rental , you’ll be able to see many of the signature Hawaii Big Island waterfalls. These are cascades you can get to on your own without the need to book a tour or helicopter but there may still be entrance and parking fees.

The ‘ Akaka Falls State Park has two waterfalls, the ‘Akaka Falls and the Kahuna Falls (not to be confused with hakuna matata). The trailhead is by the parking lot which is easy to find. The trail is mostly paved with hand railings and multiple steps. It’s a family friendly loop that’s 0.4 miles in length, that’s approximately a 30-45 minute hike to see both falls.

If you only have time to see one waterfall, the panoramic view of ‘Akaka is the one to visit. ‘Akaka is a free-falling waterfall, it’s unique in that the water drops down 442 feet from the cliff’s edge to the bottom of the gorge.

Compared to ‘Akaka, Kahuna is a cascading waterfall that falls into various pools of water before its eventual drop to the Kolekole stream.

rainbow falls big island waterfalls

The 80-foot Rainbows Falls is located in the Wailuku River State Park . As the name of this waterfall suggest, it is best known for its rainbow formed from its morning mists.

For those with young children and elderly, the advantage of this waterfall is that you don’t have to hike to see it. For a scenic viewpoint, there is a viewing platform with a ramp right off the parking lot.

At the base of the falls is a natural lava cave formed from the splash back of the falls. There are also a set of steep steps next to the falls where you can get a top down angle.

While you’re up there, walk another 100 feet on the trail and you’ll find more huge banyan trees. If you can’t make it up the steps, there are also a bountiful of banyan trees near the parking lot as well. Look up and you’ll see the huge canopies you’re under. You need to watch you footing around the banyan trees as there are many roots sticking out from the ground.

peepee big island waterfalls with wailuku river

Another area of the Wailuku River State Park is the Boiling Pots Section with a view of Pe’epe’e Falls . This is worth a visit as both the Rainbow Falls and Pe’epe’e Falls are close in proximity.

On the same street as Rainbow Falls, a four-minute drive along Waiānuenue Avenue, Boiling Pots area is at the end of Peʻepeʻe Falls Drive. The Boiling Pots is more the highlight in this location as it is within a section of the Wailuku River that has a lot of twist and turns. These pots are caused by storm water rising and filling these holes with pools of water and the turbulent river swirling or “boiling” within these pots.

You’ll still be able to get a view of the Pe’epe’e Falls as there’s no hiking involved, you’ll be able to view both the falls and the Boilings Pots from the lookout point.

WARNING: You may see some swimmers in the area but there are many warning signs along the fence that tell you that entering is not allowed. Not only does it harm the environment but there’s a risk of unsuspecting flash flood. Use your own judgement here.

Once you’re finished here, another small waterfall you can stop by to see is the Wailuku River Falls . This is a 3-minute drive from Pe’epe’e Falls. From the bridge of Waianuenue Avenue, you can see the pair of waterfalls. Unfortunately, there’s no designated parking, so you can either take a peek as you’re driving through or park off the street near the bridge and walk over.

Facilities: Restroom is by the parking lot.

Can you swim by the falls: Yes, if you cross the fence.

hillawe waterfall waipio valley big island hawaii

The Waipi’o Valley opens right out into the Pacific Ocean and what leads it off to the left is the Hi’ilawe Falls , where water drops a thundering 1,450 feet, making it the tallest waterfall in the entire state of Hawaii.

Hi’ilawe Falls shares the same cliff wall as Hakalaoa Falls to the left which is often dry.

A heads up that this waterfall isn’t always flowing as strongly as you see in the photos. Due to a dam and ditch that redirects water to nearby farms, don’t be too disappointed if you find Hi’ilawe to also be dry.

If you’re trying to figure out how you can see the waterfall, the short answer is that because of how deep it’s set in the valley, the best way to see it is from within the valley or from the air. While you’d think that there’s a good view of the falls from the Waipi’o Valley Lookout, you actually can’t see it from there as you can only see across the valley.

For those that are intent to see the waterfall from the valley floor and fit, there is an access road along Waipio Valley Road. This one-way paved road is extremely steep downhill (25% grade and one of the steepest roads in the world) so it is only recommended if you have a 4×4. Depending on the water levels, there are also a few rivers that need to be crossed if you’re looking to go all the way to the end of the road. From there, walk into the valley, past the junction, where you then get view of the falls. At this point, you’re right in private lands so going any further would mean trespassing.

If you’re going to walk it from the Waipi’o Valley Lookout parking lot, expect a 20 minute walk on the way down and about 40 minutes to get back up. You also don’t necessarily need to hike all the way as there are many openings in the valley with views of the waterfall (vantage point of the photo above).

TIP: If you’re attempting the hike, only do it if you’re prepared to make the hike back uphill and make sure to have good hiking shoes or sandals , a few snacks, and plenty of water.

An alternative to walking or driving down is to experience Waipi’o Valley by horseback with a company like Waip’o on Horseback or to book a shuttle with Waipio Valley Shuttle .

muliwai trail z trail from across the waipio valley on the big island

LOCAL TIP: The best panoramic view of Hi’ilawe Falls and the Waipi’o Valley is actually on the Muliwai Trail (aka the Z-Trail) which is on the opposite side of the valley. There are incredible views of the valley and the falls about halfway up the switchbacks.

Location: North west side of Big Island

Address:  Hiilawe Falls, Hawaii 96743

Parking: You can drive your 4×4 to the valley floor down the extremely steep road but for most, your best bet is to park at the Waipi’o Valley Lookout which is free. Parking here is limited especially during the busy hours of the day.

There may be cars parked on the street as you approach it but don’t stress. Continue driving down into the parking lot as people are moving in and out all of the time.

What you will see: Hiilaw’e Falls , Waipi’o Valley Lookout

Website: This is not administered by Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Difficulty: Hike is challenging, lookout is easy.

Great for kids?: Strenuous hike is not suitable for kids but the lookout is kid-friendly.

Best time to visit: Early in the morning and on weekdays when it’s less busy and easier to find parking.

Closest hotels: Cliff House Honoka’a , Private Honka’a Apartment , Waipi’o Lodge , and Hale Kukui Orchard & Cottages .

Facilities: Bathrooms at the lookout.

Nearby activities: Waipi’o on Horseback , Waipio Valley Shuttle , Muliwai Trail , Waipi’o Black Sand Beach (there’s the Kaluahine Falls but use caution when walking east along the coastal boulders for 0.42 mile), Kahi Ola Mau Farm

Big Island Audio Guide Apps

To help in your road trip around Big Island, there are two different audio guide apps out there that I can recommend. Both of these apps use GPS to pinpoint where you are and as you’re driving, you’ll get commentary, stories, and directions to where you should visit.

The app doesn’t require data so it works offline.

The most popular is one called GypsyGuide ($9.99) and the other is ShakaGuide ($29.99).

Guided Big Island Waterfalls Tours

ziplining umauma falls is a guided waterfall tour on big island hawaii

Something unique to Big Island waterfalls is that there are a number to cross into private property which means you can’t simply walk in yourself.

In addition to these private waterfalls, there are also a number of guided tours that will simply make your life a lot easier, not having to worry about having a 4×4, driving treacherous roads, and being able to see them all in a short span of time.

Something you’ll quickly see is that this is Hawaii’s zipline island with so many different ones to choose from, each flying through a different private waterfall.

These are the best paid experiences to see waterfalls on Big Island.

ziplining over kamaeee waterfalls in botanical world adventures

Not to be confused with the botanical garden, the Botanical World Adventures is closer to The Umumu Experience and is actually next door to them. Think of this place as an adventure playground and botanical garden all-in-one.

kamaee falls at botanical world adventures

For the nature lovers, once you enter the grounds, you’ll be able to either do your own Botanical Gardens Segway Tour in Hakalau . These will allow you to take a stroll through the lush rainforest trail, Rainbow Gardens, Arboretum, giant maze, and their two waterfalls. Walking there, or driving up, you’ll be able to see Kamae’e Falls and the small tumbles of Hanapueo Falls .

If you’re looking for adventure, they have the Zip Isle zipline (6 including dual racing lines), Segway adventures ( moderate and advanced ), and Jungle Falls bike experiences.

kohala waterfalls adventure tour on big island

A well-respected tour operator in Hawaii, Hawaii Forest & Trail has specialized tours on the Big Island that focuses on the hidden waterfalls of Northern Kohala.

The tour is called Kohala Waterfalls Adventure and this is an off-road expedition that takes you to private Kohala waterfalls, scenic coastlines, rugged valleys, and tranquil streams.

big island waterfalls tour

Since I haven’t been on this tour and their access is so exclusive, I can’t even pinpoint exactly which waterfalls they take you but if you read the reviews , this is easily one of the best day trips you can do if you love the outdoors.

One of the unique aspects of this tour is that it starts in Kona (west side of the island) and offers pickups at Waikoloa resorts so this is perfect for those that are based there during your time on Big Island.

Location: Tour starts in Kona (West side of Big Island) and takes you to the North west side of the island.

Tour start time: 6:50AM (not available every day of the week so make sure to check the calendar)

Total tour time: 7-9 hours

Price: $198.95 USD per person.

Difficulty: Easy. Expect to hike approximately 1.5 miles with an elevation gain of 200 feet in 1 – 2 hours.

Includes: Water (bring your own water bottle), walking stick, daypack, rain gear, lunch, and hotel pick up/drop off.

guided big island tours and rainbow falls

There are a number of tour operators that run your “see everything in a day” type of tour or those that focus on Waipi’o Valley and take you to a bunch of different waterfalls. I’ve bundled a few in here to give you some choice if you’d rather put the trip planning in the hands of an expert.

The advantage of these tours is that they’ll take you to all of the popular and hidden spots you need to see. These are done in small groups and your guide will be able to provide thoughtful commentary along the way. This is also great for those tight on time and want to pack in a lot without having to do the driving themselves.

The disadvantage of these tours is that you don’t have as much flexibility as you would on your own. As a result, you might be a bit more rushed from spot to spot.

With each of these tours, pay attention to where they depart from and whether they offer pick-ups from your accommodations.

FULL DAY TOURS

Volcano Adventure from Kona : Why not combine the wonders of volcanoes and waterfalls all together in this small group tour that leaves from Kona.

Big Island in a Day: Volcanoes, Waterfalls, Sightseeing, History :  Sounds ambitious but this tour manages to pack in black sand beaches, waterfalls, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park . This tour includes pick up in Kona and Kohala Coast.

Small Group Waipio Valley and Waterfalls Adventure : See 3 of the Big Island’s most famous waterfalls in a single day on this guided tour. You’ll also get a chance to swim at a private waterfall as well. Pick ups available from Kona or Waikoloa hotels.

Big Island Private and Customized Tour : If you want a bit more control over exactly what you want to see and want to do it in your own private group, these guys do an amazing job.

blue hawaiian helicopters big island spectacular tour

The best-rated and most-reviewed helicopter on Big Island is this one operated by Blue Hawaiian Helicopters .

There’s something magical about seeing the Hawaiian islands from the air but arguably the best island to do it, if you had to only pick one, is Big Island because you get the rainforests, mountains, waterfalls, and of course, volcanoes.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience with flybys of Kilauea Volcano and Kohala Coast .

The big elephant in the room though is safety and with this operator, you get the advantage that they’ve received the FAA Diamond Award every year since they started operating in 1998.

Location: Waikoloa Village (West side of Big Island)

Address:  68-690 Waikoloa Rd, Waikoloa Village, HI 96738, United States

Tour start time: There are two morning (8AM and 10:30AM) departures normally but currently it’s set at 9AM.

Total tour time: 1.5 hours

Price: Starts at $638.94 USD per person

Reviews: Blue Hawaiian Helicopters

Check out the map below to see where all of the Big Island waterfalls are located. You’ll notice that all of them are clustered on the northern coast of the islan.

Tips for Visiting Waterfalls in Big Island

Before your trip, there a few things you need to know to make sure you’re prepared.

  • Hiking sandals – With all the hiking you’ll be doing and dipping in the water, something versatile like the Keen Newport H2’s . Closed-toe footwear are mandatory for zip-lining and these count.
  • Sunglasses – As much as Ray Bans and Oakleys are popular, those that know about Maui Jim swear by it. I currently use the Chee Hoo .
  • Sunglass straps – These Croakies are super helpful to make sure you always have sunglasses on you and won’t fall off while you’re doing something active like hiking or zip-lining.
  • Reef safe sunscreen – Sun Bum is the leader here and is critical not only to protect your skin but also the reef and aquatic life. I recommend a minimum of 50 SPF.
  • Hiking backpack – You don’t need anything crazy here but if you’re doing some hiking to a waterfall, you’ll want to carry all the things you need including beach gear and cameras.
  • Beach bag – Backpacks work but when you’re packing snorkel gear, mats, chairs, and other gear, you need a large beach bag/tote.
  • Waterproof case – If you want to carry some valuables and your phone with you as you snorkel, make sure to get one of these waterproof phone cases.
  • Dry bag – Another way to keep your valuables from getting wet is by using these large dry bags.
  • Flip flops – A good pair of flip flops is always important for Hawaii. I’ve had my pair of Rainbows for a long time and swear by them.
  • Beach towel – While you might not be spending as much time on the beach as on the other islands, you’ll be definitely dipping into your fair share of waterfall pools.
  • Snorkel gear – While many resorts and tours will have free snorkel gear rental, you might as well pack your own if you plan on doing a lot of snorkeling. The full face snorkel is something that’s becoming really popular too.

To properly explore the Big Island, you’re definitely going to need a rental car.

When booking your car, here are a couple of things to remember:

  • To get the best deal on car rentals, make sure to use car rental coupon codes .
  • If you want to drive down to get close to Hi’ilawe Falls or any other off-road trails, make sure to get a 4×4 such as a Jeep Wrangler.
  • Similar to the above, if you’re going over more rugged terrain, make sure you get insurance.

When you go to Maui and the rest of Hawaii for a vacation, remember that you’re a guest of the land and as a visitor you need to respect the fragile ecosystem. Here’s how you can do your part.

This is usually one of the last things you think of but as we talk about in our breakdown of travel insurance , better safe than sorry.

If you’re planning on doing a helicopter tour, zip-lining, hiking, horseback riding, or any other adventure tours, a provider such as World Nomads is going to protect you and your loved ones.

The best time to visit Big Island of Hawaii is April to May, and August to October. November and December is usually the wettest time of the year that also carries into January – March. Summer is also a nice time to visit but it is also the busiest and most expensive.

Waterfalls depending on water of course and so the strongest flows come after rainfall. However, since you might not have too much control over that, the best time of the day to see waterfalls is in the morning because some have a high chance of seeing rainbows from the spray and also parking and the crowds are the smallest.

Whale season on Big Island is in the winter months between January and March where you’ll have a good chance to see humpback whales that migrate from Alaska.

This depends on the waterfall. For many of the waterfalls that you can drive to, hiking down to the base of the waterfall to swim in is not condoned but you will see that some people will disregard the signs. In most cases, this is to preserve the environment and also in case of flash-flooding. For private waterfalls and ones that you’re taken to by a guide, many of those you can swim in.

Starting July 8, 2021, pre-travel testing and quarantine requirements will be eliminated for domestic travelers who have been fully vaccinated in the United States (2 weeks beyond their final vaccine shot). At this point, restaurants will be able to get to 75% capacity although social distancing will remain and masks indoors required. When the state reaches 70% vaccination rate, all restrictions will be terminated. Travelers to Hawaii will need to upload your CDC issued vaccination record card to the state’s  Safe Travels Program  website and have that card with them upon arrival in Hawaii. For everyone else, there is a 10-day quarantine for in-bound visitors to all Hawaiian Islands unless you have proof of a negative COVID-19 test ( state-approved trusted testing partner ) taken 72 hours prior to departure to bypass this including travellers from Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and French Polynesia. For Canada, the lab used must be approved by Air Canada or WestJet . If you fail to produce this, you’ll need to do a 10-day quarantine. The AlohaSafe Alert app is optional on the Big Island. The most up to date information can be found here .

There’s something truly magical about the Big Island waterfalls. It’s not only the majesty of the type of cascades you can see, the lush and verdant mountains and jungles that surround it, but it’s also the height that they drop from as well.

Whether you explore on your own or join one of the epic tours available, you’re bound to be impressed.

Big Island Waterfalls FAQs:

What is the biggest waterfall on the big island.

With a drop of 1,450 feet, the Hi’ilawe Falls in Waipio Valley is the biggest waterfall on the Big Island and the entire state of Hawaii! However, the flow of water is rather minimal and falls in a trickling stream rather than a powerful cascade (especially during the wet season when the river is used for irrigation).

But don’t let that discourage you – Hi’ilawa is stunning. To visit the valley, you’ll need to book an excursion or shuttle bus tour.

What are the easy-access waterfalls on the Big Island?

If you’re short on time (or just not interested in a long hike), there are a few waterfalls that you can see without much effort. Rainbow Falls and Pe’epe’e Falls are both located just a few minutes drive from downtown Hilo. They’re also located right next to the parking lot, so no long or strenuous hike is necessary.

If you don’t mind a little bit of a walk, then you can also visit ‘Akaka Falls and Kahuna Falls in the ‘Akaka Falls State Park. Both of these waterfalls can be seen from the paved .4-mile looped trail. There are a few steps here and there (so it’s not wheelchair accessible), but easy and fun to do for those traveling with little ones.

What Big Island waterfalls can you swim in?

Swimming in the pool of a waterfall is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, there are only a few Big Island waterfalls that are safe enough to swim in.

For example, Kulaniapia Falls and Umauma Falls are both swimmable. However, they can only be visited by purchasing a ticket to the gardens/private property they’re on. You can also go swimming at two waterfalls on the North Kohala Waterfall Swim and Hike (a guided tour that takes you to a private reserve on the Kohala coast).

As we love to go swimming in Kulaniapia Falls and we like local guides for their stories and history, we like recommending the Big Island Waterfall Adventures tour . They include access to Kulaniapia Falls, Hawaii Bioreserve, Akaka Falls, and more on a guided tour.

We want to stress that you should only go swimming in places where it’s allowed. Waterfalls can be extremely powerful and dangerous, and many of them are subject to strong currents and flash flooding. So please – pay attention to the signage and stick to waterfalls you know are safe.

We provide pictures of all these waterfalls below but for a more immersive experience, watch our Best Big Island Waterfalls video!

10 Best Big Island Waterfalls

1. kulaniapia falls.

Located just a short drive outside of Hilo, the breathtaking Kulaniapia Falls is one of our top picks for outdoor adventure. Not only is the waterfall itself beautiful (it’s around 120 feet tall), but it’s also located on private property and only accessible to a small number of people each day. Therefore, it’s rarely crowded, which gives you the feeling of being somewhere exclusive!

To see Kulaniapia Falls, you’ll need to purchase a day pass , which is $49 per adult and $29 per child. This gives you five hours on the 42-acre property, where you can go swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding beneath the falls. You also have the option to purchase other activities, like waterfall rappelling, farm tours, and cooking classes. With so much to do here, you might also consider spending the night in one of the property’s off-the-grid suites or guesthouses.

While the price of the day pass may seem high, it’s, in our opinion, 100% worth it. Considering it’s one of the few swimmable waterfalls, spending the day at Kulaniapia Falls is truly a unique experience.

A drone photo of one of the best Big Island waterfalls, Kulaniapia Falls, which cascades into a waterfall pool.

2. Rainbow Falls

Although it’s not particularly tall, Rainbow Falls is still one of the most jaw-dropping waterfalls on the Big Island. That’s because it has one of the most picturesque settings we’ve seen. The water flows over a natural lava cave, which is believed to be the home of Hina, the Hawaiian goddess of the moon. And because it’s surrounded by wild ginger and monstera plants, this waterfall is the definition of tropical paradise.

The best time to visit is first thing in the morning. As the sun rises, it reflects off the light in the water, which creates a shimmery rainbow in the mist of the pool. Hence how Rainbow Falls got its name!

Rainbow Falls is also one of the best attractions because it’s just so easy to reach. It’s a 5-minute drive from downtown Hilo and easily accessible from the main parking lot. Not to mention, it’s free to park and free to visit! This is a great thing to do if you’re exploring Hilo for one day.

While the view from the platform is impressive, many people like to take the walking path on the left-hand side to get closer to the falls. This trail leads you through a dense canopy of century-old banyan trees before taking you to an upper lookout that gazes over the top of the falls.

3. Boiling Pots (Pe’epe’e Falls)

A short drive up from Rainbow Falls sits another natural wonder – the Boiling Pots. These rocky pools sit at the base of Pe’epe’e Falls (which is also fed by the Wailuku River) and were carved out by lava from an eruption of Mauna Kea. The water rushes through them with such force that they look as if they’re a bubbling pot of hot water.

Pe’epe’e Falls and the Boiling Pots are also just a short walk from the parking lot (it’s free to park and to visit), so they’re easy to reach if you’re on a budget or short on time. Once you arrive, you’ll find a small viewing platform that looks out over the river. The basalt pools can be seen clearly, although the waterfall is a bit further back. And although it may be tempting to get a closer look, doing so can be extremely dangerous!

Walking anywhere past the lookout deck is strictly prohibited, and those who proceed beyond the signage can be fined. Even when there aren’t flash floods, the water flow is so strong that many people have drowned trying to cross the stream to get closer to the falls. So stay back – no matter how tempting it may seem!

Big Island waterfalls, boiling pots, also known as Pe'epe'e Falls, which is set back a little farther among lush vegetation and a river.

4. Onomea Falls

Nestled between the exotic forest of coconut palms and ferns is Onomea Falls. This multi-tiered waterfall is part of the 17-acre Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden, a nature reserve with over 2,000 different types of flora. So, in addition to seeing the waterfall, you’ll also be able to wander the grounds admiring orchids, heliconia, monkeypods, and fruit trees.

As soon as you enter the gardens, take a sharp left after the boardwalk to reach the waterfall. The water is supplied by Onomea Creek, which winds its way through the jungle before emptying out into the nearby Onomea Bay. When you add up the height of all three tiers, the waterfall is anywhere from 20 to 30 feet tall. Unfortunately, there is no swimming allowed, so stick to the main path.

While the high ticket cost may deter people from visiting, we think it’s worth the cost, especially if you have a few hours to spend in the garden. It’s a very peaceful experience. Plus, you’ll also get to see another waterfall, which is our #5 on this list! We include this in an excursion day as part of our Big Island itinerary .

Onomea falls making its way down a series of tiers and switchbacks into a small pool.

5. Boulder Creek Falls

Boulder Creek Falls is also located within the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden. However, it’s part of the Alakahi Stream, which is a set deeper inside the park. It’s a pretty and scenic walk as you navigate the gardens, which are filled with orchids, vines, and chirping birds. Keep going until you reach the paved Boulder Creek Trail, which takes you directly to a bridge boasting scenic views over the falls.

The waterfall itself isn’t very large, as it’s only 10 feet in height. And instead of seeing a straight drop, Boulder Creek is more like a tricking cascade that snakes its way across a series of – you guessed it – boulders! Swimming is not allowed (although you probably couldn’t anyways since it flows into a stream rather than a pool).

As it’s part of the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden, you will need to pay for entrance if you want to see Boulder Creek Falls. But again, it’s well worth it, in our opinion!

Boulder Creek Falls flowing beneath a bridge among green vegetation.

6. ‘Akaka Falls

As one of the biggest waterfalls on the eastern coast, ‘Akaka Falls is not to be missed on your trip to the Big Island. It’s located in the ultra-lush ‘Akaka Falls State Park, which is a stunning 65-acre property just 23 minutes north of Hilo.

There is a .4-mile loop trail that winds through the park, taking you directly to ‘Akaka Falls as well as Kahuna Falls. The trail is paved and relatively flat (except for a few stairs), so doable for families with little kids! And there are so many tropical plants to see along the way, like ferns, orchids, and bamboo groves.

Best Big Island Waterfalls 'Akaka Falls

Once you spot the falls in the distance, you’ll be in awe of its beauty and size. This straight-plunging 442-foot waterfall dives right off a cliff into a bowl-shaped gorge. There are several viewpoints on the trail, so make sure to bring your camera to get all those good shots!

Keep in mind that there is a fee to enter the park ($5 for each car or $1 for pedestrians). And because it’s one of the more popular attractions in the area, be prepared to share the walkway with other waterfall chasers.

If you want to see ‘Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, and see sights all around the Big Island in one day, this Big Island Grand Circle Tour is a great way to do that.

7. Kahuna Falls

Before you reach the magnificent ‘Akaka Falls, you’ll likely pass by a little overlook while walking on the looped trail of ‘Akaka Falls State Park. Make sure to stop here because this is where you can see the second waterfall in the park – Kahuna Falls!

As a side note, you can also walk the looped trail in reverse. From the entrance, you can head left to see the ‘Akaka Falls first before continuing another 800 feet to reach the viewpoint of Kahuna Falls.

At first glance, Kahuna Falls may look much smaller than its more famous neighbor. But in reality, it’s over 400 feet tall! However, the viewpoint is somewhat obstructed, as there is a large cliff that stands in between you and the falls. You’ll also only be looking at the waterfall’s profile instead of having a dramatic view straight on. For this reason, we recommend coming after heavy rainfall when the flow of the water is more substantial.

Because Kahuna Falls also lies within the ‘Akaka Falls State Park, you’ll need to buy an entrance ticket and pay for parking when you arrive.

Big Island waterfalls, overlook to view Kahuna Falls.

8. Umauma Falls

With a drop that separates into three different tiers, Umauma Falls is one of the more unique waterfalls we’ve been to. Together, the waterfall is roughly 300 feet high and, like many other waterfalls in the area, is also surrounded by lush vegetation.

It’s important to note that the falls are located in a private botanical garden owned by the Umauma Experience . To visit, you’ll need to pay for the Umauma Falls & Garden tour ($12 per car), which allows you to drive right up to the viewpoint of the falls. This ticket also gives you time to enjoy the gardens and surrounding landscape.

However, the Umauma Experience also offers a few other fun adventures if you’re interested in doing some heart-racing activities while you’re here. You can go ziplining , ATV-ing , horseback riding, or river kayaking.

But by far the most incredible thing to do here is the Waterfall Rappel and River Tour . For this experience, you’ll be outfitted with a wetsuit and safety gear as you descend 250 feet down into the Umauma Valley. You’ll then rappel down two waterfalls and straight into the Umauma River, floating until you reach the final pool (which you can jump into!). The entire tour lasts around 3.5 hours, and rappelers must be at least eight years old to join. Younger kids or those who don’t want to rappel can instead book the Umauma Falls & Garden tour .

We’ve also done the zipline course and can highly recommend that as well. You’ll fly high above the canopies as you cross 14 different waterfalls at speeds of up to 65 miles an hour. And it’s suitable for kids four and up!

9. Hi’ilawe Falls

Hawaii’s largest waterfall may not be easy to reach, but it’s an awe-inspiring natural wonder that will take your breath away! Located in the rugged Waipo Valley (on the northern coast, approximately one hour from Hilo), the 1,450-foot Hi’ilawe Waterfall is a cascading white ribbon of beauty.

The towering cliffs that cradle the water were formed by lava flow from Mauna Kea. Nowadays, they’re covered in a thick brush of vines and ferns, blanketing the gorge in all shades of green.

If you’re eager to tick Hi’ilawe off your bucket list, then be aware that visiting the falls is only accessible on a tour. While there is a public parking lot at the viewpoint atop the valley, ascending down to the valley floor to get closer to the falls is restricted unless you’re with an approved guide. And please, don’t think about driving down the road that leads to the valley! It’s incredibly steep and should only be attempted for those with a 4×4. And even if you do have an SUV, it’s likely that your rental company has written in your contract that doing so is prohibited!

10. North Kohala

Trekking the picturesque Kohala coast isn’t just about waterfalls (although you do get to see lots of them on your journey). It’s about immersing yourself in the pristine, untouched natural surroundings that the Big Island is so famously known for.

This Kohala Waterfall Swim and Hike tour starts off with an off-road drive to a private nature reserve that was once a sugar cane plantation. After getting your day packs, walking sticks, and towels, you’ll embark on a leisurely 1.5-mile through the forest. There’s so much to see along the way, like trickling streams, fruit trees, and, most importantly, waterfalls!

In total, there are seven waterfalls in the reserve. You’ll be given lots of time to go swimming under two falls, so make sure to bring your swimsuit as well. The pools range anywhere from 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the perfect temperature for a refreshing mid-hike dip!

This is such a unique experience because the max group size is just 12 people, so you won’t have to deal with crowds or other tourists. Being here really makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a slice of untouched paradise on the Big Island!

The trip ends with a picnic lunch, where you’ll get to enjoy one of the most spectacular views on the island. The jaw-dropping views over cliffs and black beaches of Pololu Valley are the perfect backdrop to end a fantastic day exploring the waterfalls of Hawaii. We really enjoyed the entire tour! Learn more about our entire experience on the tour (including a video review).

You can see a volcano on television, but have you witnessed one in person? If not, consider booking one of the Big Island Volcano Tours for an adventure of a lifetime.

You’ll get to spend hours outside exploring some of these Hawaii lava tours. However, there are shorter options that allow you to ride on a helicopter to get some of the best views of all time.

Regardless of the tour you choose, you can expect the experience of the tour to leave a lasting impression on you and your loved ones.

And if you really want to turn it into an educational experience, try running one of these volcano experiments before your trip!

Hawaii Volcanoes FAQs

As of 2023, there are 6 Hawaii volcanoes that are considered active. And the Big Island of Hawaii is home to 4 out of those 6. The active volcanoes on the Big Island include Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai. The remaining active volcano is Haleakala on Maui. There is also a volcano off of Big Island’s coast that is underwater too!

Unless the volcanoes are actively erupting, you will not be able to see lava in Hawaii. Kilauea last erupted in December 2020.

While you won’t die if you quickly touch the lava, you will definitely get a horrible burn. I definitely don’t recommend it!

It depends on traffic, but it usually takes about 2 hours if you don’t make any stops. There are a lot of cool places to see along the drive from Kona, so I suggest planning for 3-4 hours to take in some sights along the way.

Usually, the best way to see the volcano in Big Island is to go on a Hawaii volcano tour! You can also enjoy some self-guided tours if you prefer to go at your own pace to view these active volcanoes.

The best volcano tours take you to see the Kilauea volcano and help you to explore Volcanoes National Park. There are even some that take you to some black sand beaches and take you on a day trip all around the island of Hawaii.

If you want to see the red, hot lava glow, then you will want to go very early in the morning or after it gets dark under the night sky. However, there are plenty of other awesome things to explore at the Big Island volcanoes, so you can visit any time you want!

Where to Stay in Volcano Hawaii

Now that you know what to do at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, let’s talk about accommodations. There are tons of options for places to stay in Volcano Hawaii for all price points.

Unless you want to go camping, the only place to stay inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the Volcano House Hotel . It’s a historic Big Island hotel that is super convenient for exploring the park. And it’s great for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with kids !

Otherwise, your best bet is to stay at a vacation rental in Volcano Village. Some of my top picks include Hale Sweet Hale (featured on HGTV), At the Crater’s Edge , and Volcano Hideaway Hale (also seen on HGTV).
