The reunited riot grrrrl band return for the first time since 1996

bikini kill tour australia

Bikini Kill have shared a full run of headlining Australian tour dates, following their announcement on the lineups for both Golden Plains and Mona Foma earlier this month.

The tour, announced today (October 27), will see the reunited riot grrrl band play additional shows in Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. A pre-sale for the band’s Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne shows will run tomorrow (October 28) from 9am local time, prior to A general sale commencing on Monday October 31. Ticketing info for Brisbane can be found here , while tickets for Adelaide and Melbourne can be accessed here and here , respectively.

As for Perth, the band’s show at The Rechabyte – announced as part of this year’s Perth Festival – will go on sale at 12pm on Thursday November 3, with tickets available from the festival’s website . Finally, the Sydney Opera House show will go on sale at 9am on Friday November 4. Ticketing information is available via the Sydney Opera House website .

Next year’s run will mark Bikini Kill’s second tour of Australia, with their first coming as part of Summersault Festival over the 1995/1996 new-year period. The festival, as documented in the new Powerhouse Museum exhibition Unpopular , included bands such as the Foo Fighters , Sonic Youth and Beck .

It also featured Pavement  – who will also appear at Mona Foma on their upcoming tour  – as well as the Beastie Boys , marking the first time Bikini Kill frontwoman Kathleen Hanna would meet her husband-to-be, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz.

Hanna has toured Australia twice between Bikini Kill’s 1997 split and their 2019 reunion – with Le Tigre at the 2005 Big Day Out, and a headlining tour with The Julie Ruin (which also featured Bikini Kill bassist Kathi Wilcox) in 2014. The latter band were meant to return to Australia in 2017 as part of that year’s Laneway Festival, but pulled out due to what was described as an “unanticipated and unavoidable medical conflict”.

Bikini Kill’s 2023 Australian tour dates are:

FEBRUARY Sunday 26 – Hobart, MONA Lawns

Recommended

MARCH Wednesday 1 – Perth, The Rechabyte Friday 3 – Brisbane, The Tivoli Sunday 5 – Adelaide, Lion Arts Factory Wednesday 8 – Melbourne, Forum Theatre Saturday 11 – Meredith, Golden Plains Festival Monday 13 – Sydney, Sydney Opera House Concert Hall

Frequently asked questions, reunited riot grrrl icons make their sydney opera house debut.

Get ready for revolution girl style, as legendary feminist punk rockers Bikini Kill – lead by riot grrrl icon Kathleen Hanna, alongside original members Tobi Vail and Kathi Wilcox – return to Australia for the first time since the ’90s, marking their Sydney Opera House debut. The band that defined a generation – and influenced countless others – will bring their indefatigable spirit and defiant energy for an unmissable show in the Concert Hall for one night only .

Exploding onto an early-‘90s indie rock scene dominated by male bands, Bikini Kill fused the bratty, visceral energy of punk with the radical politics of feminism, igniting a whole new movement that came to be known as “riot grrrl” – an ethos that continues to reverberate across music, art and culture more than 30 years later. Lead by the irrepressible Kathleen Hanna – who famously wrote the phrase “smells like teen spirit” on Kurt Cobain’s apartment wall – the Olympia, Washington trio’s brief but influential reign yielded such classics as “New Radio”, “Double Dare Ya” and “Rebel Girl”, while Hanna would go on to form the exhilarating electro-punk outfit Le Tigre and become a hero to generations of girls, queers and femmes.

Since reuniting in the US for their first shows in more than two decades, the band has drawn breathless raves from American critics and audiences, their music and message – as relevant as ever in an era where women’s reproductive rights are again under threat – retaining all of its righteous fury and cathartic power.

On top of appearances at Mona Foma , Golden Plains and Perth Festival , the trailblazing trio of Hanna, Kathi Wilcox and Tobi Vail are doing a series of headline shows, including appearing in Melbourne in March.

In preparation, either watching or rewatching the exceptional documentary The Punk Singer , about Hanna, should be on your must-do list right now. Fun fact: when Hanna spray-painted "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit" across her pal Mr Cobain's wall, the name of a certain grunge anthem was born.

When they hit Sydney, Bikini Kill are appearing at the Sydney Opera House's All About Women conference on Sunday, March 12 , too, which Melburnians can also livestream from home .

The group returns to the road next month

bikini kill tour australia

This spring, Bikini Kill are returning to the road for an extensive world tour. The run begins on March 3 at Pabellón Oeste in Mexico City, Mexico, and wraps up on September 11 at Baltimore Soundstage in Baltimore, Maryland. The trek will see the band play shows across South America, Europe, the UK, and North America.

These shows see the band performing with their iconic line-up of Kathleen Hanna on vocals, Tobi Vail on drums, and Kathi Wilcox on bass, along with guitarist Sara Landeau.

Tickets on sale this Friday, February 9 at 7am PT/10am ET.

Check out the full tour itinerary below.

Active from 1990 to 1998, Bikini Kill is a feminist punk band that started in Olympia, WA, and later moved to Washington, DC. Billy Karren joined Kathleen Hanna, Kathi Wilcox and Tobi Vail on guitar after the band had played several shows as a three-piece. Credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early ’90s via their political lyrics, zines and confrontational live shows, Bikini Kill encouraged women and girls to start bands as a means of cultural resistance. They used touring as a way to create an underground network between girls who played music, put on shows and made fanzines. This informal network created a forum for multiple female voices to be heard.

Bikini Kill started touring in June 1991, serving up their radical feminist punk rage to crowds across the US several times, as well as making their way through Europe, Australia and Japan. The band recorded and released a demo tape, two EPs, two LPs and three singles which are available via their independent label Bikini Kill Records. The band has re-issued Pussy Whipped and Reject All American , available now on vinyl & CD for the first time since they went out of print. They also uploaded their entire catalog on streaming services. Bikini Kill

Bikini Kill is a feminist punk band that was based in Olympia, WA and Washington, DC, forming in 1990 and breaking up in 1997. Kathleen Hanna sang, Tobi Vail played drums, Billy Karren (a.k.a. Billy Boredom) played guitar and Kathi Wilcox played bass. Sometimes they switched instruments. Bikini Kill is credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 90's via their political lyrics, zines and confrontational live show.

The band started touring in June 1991. In addition to touring the US several times, they also toured Europe, Australia and Japan. Bikini Kill recorded and released a demo tape, two EP's, two LP's and three singles. Their demo tape was self-released,while their first two records came out as a full length CD/Tape and their singles were posthumously collected on CD.

Bikini Kill believed that if all girls started bands the world would change. They actively encouraged women and girls to start bands as a means of cultural resistance. Bikini Kill was inspired by seeing Babes in Toyland play live and attempted to incite female participation and build feminist community via the punk scene. They used touring as a way to create an underground network between girls who played music, put on shows and made fanzines. This independent media making and informal network created a forum for multiple female voices to be heard.

Speaking with Rolling Stone in 2020 after announcing their reunion, Hanna explained how the band’s return was prompted by the dual forces of Donald Trump’s presidency and the #MeToo movement. “Since Trump was elected, there’ve been all these times when the news is on and I’m singing a Bikini Kill song in my head,” Hanna said. “It’s like I need to hear these songs… With the #MeToo movement and a president who says, ‘Grab them by the pussy,’ it’s hard not to feel like, ‘OK, feminism’s coming back.”
