If you decide to stay in Getxo where your cruise ship docks, there is a wide variety of things to do and see. Getxo is renowned for its legendary  Vizcaya Bridge (Bizkaia Bridge), a massive hanging bridge that connects the two banks of the Nervion Estuary between the towns of Portugalete and Getxo.

Vizcaya Bridge is the oldest transporter bridge in the world dating from 1893 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006. It is one of the most iconic structures in Bilbao representing the industrial era.

The bridge can be crossed via a pedestrian walkway that can be reached in the 50-meter high panoramic lift. Once you’re up, you’ll admire the most amazing views of the Bilbao port, neighboring mountains, Portugalete and Getxo. The general admission fee to the walkway is 10€.

Vizcaya Bridge can also be crossed on the gondola hanging from a 25-meter-long, 36-wheel carriage that moves along the rails from one end to another. The ride lasts around 90 seconds and the price is symbolic, 0.50€ per person. Find more information on Vizcaya Bridge (Puente Bizkaia) official website

As your cruise ship will be docked in Getxo, you can choose to spend a day exploring the town’s Old fishing port (Puerto Viejo), walk along the waterfront promenade overlooking Ereaga beach , enjoy a coffee with a view over the town’s marina, or discover the town’s landmarks.

If you are looking for scenic views, La Galea cliffs offer a real treat for the eye with dramatic cliffs, inlets, beautiful beaches and landmarks such as Aixerrota Windmill, La Galea Fort and Faro La Galea Lighthouse. You can either opt for a panoramic coastal ride or go hiking, cycling, or sailing.

You can walk into the Getxo town center from your ship (it takes about 20 minutes), but the best option is to take a free shuttle bus provided by the port authorities to the Getxo downtown from where you can explore the city.

2. Guggenheim Museum

Guggenheim Museum is the icon of Bilbao and home to an outstanding collection of the 20th and 21st centuries’ art masterpieces.

Nestled on the banks of the Nervión River, this architectural wonder consists of a massive complex of interconnected buildings made of silver titanium and glass, of shapes representing the sea and the city’s maritime tradition.

Guggenheim Museum was designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry and was officially opened in 1997.

The two most famous sculptures of Guggenheim are Jeff Koons’ 12-meter tall “Puppy”, entirely covered with flowers and plants, guarding the entrance to the museum, and Louise Bourgois’s “Maman”, a 10-meter tall sculpture of a spider made of marble and stainless steel.

The museum consists of multiple floors and takes a few hours to visit. You will also find a tourist information desk and two restaurants where you can go for lunch or snacks.

Guggenheim Museum Puppy, port of Bilbao

To get to the Guggenheim Museum from the port of Bilbao, the best way is to either take a cruise line shuttle bus that will drop you off at Plaza Moyúa, from where you can walk 10 minutes to the museum, or take a metro and get off at Moyúa train station. Guggenheim Museum is wheelchair-accessible.

You can visit the interior and the courtyard for a small fee (the audioguide and the visit to the Church of Saint Anthony the Great are included in the price).

Another church in the old town to visit is the Church of San Nicolás which dates from the 18th century and features a beautiful Baroque facade.

Church of San Nicolás, Bilbao

Casco Viejo is also known as Las Siete Calles (“Seven Streets” or “ Zazpikaleak”  in Basque) after the seven streets that form the heart of the old town. Here, you’ll find  Plaza Nueva (also known as Plaza Barria), the neoclassical square filled with tapas bars, cafes and restaurants, as well as numerous narrow old streets packed with taverns and shops.

If you look for authentic food and local experience, head to La Ribera Market , the main food market in Bilbao where you can taste the “pintxos”, small finger food served at bars and taverns, a specialty of Basque cuisine.

4. Bilbao Museums

Besides Guggenheim, Bilbao has a few other amazing museums that are within walking distance from Casco Viejo and the city center.

  • Bilbao Maritime Museum (Itsasmuseum Bilbao) – It is located a 15-minute walk along the Nervión riverside walkway from Guggenheim, in the former Eukalduna shipyards. The museum is dedicated to shipbuilding, maritime culture and the history of maritime activity on the Ría de Bilbao and its port.

The majority of Guernica’s architecture was destroyed in the bombing, however, the Biscayan Assembly House and the Guernica Tree (Gernikako Arbola) survived. Bilbao Cruise Port: What to Do in 8 Hours

Located in the Bay of Biscay on Spain’s Atlantic coast, Bilbao had long been an important fishing and trading port before it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Castille in 1200. Over subsequent centuries its key location facilitated trade with the Americas and the rest of Europe which ensured its role as an important maritime centre.

Table of Contents

By the 19th century the city of Bilbao was one of Spain’s most important industrial centres with its wealth based largely on mining, the iron and steel industry and shipbuilding. Such was its prosperity that the city experienced rapid population growth which necessitated the extension of its urban area beyond the Casco Viejo (Old Town) and Bilbao La Vieja. As a result the attractive and prosperous Ensanche (Extension) district was built on the other side of the Nervión River. Today this is the city’s vibrant commercial centre where visitors will find offices, shops and banks set amid beautiful historic buildings.

Changing patterns of world trade conspired to destroy the city’s industrial base such that by the 1980s Bilbao had experienced a near total decline in its key industries. It was in this post-industrial environment that the city’s fortunes would be transformed when in 1991 the Basque government and the Guggenheim Foundation came to an agreement to to build a museum in the city’s old port area. The opening of the Guggenheim Museum in 1997 sparked a revival in the local economy as tourists began arriving in the city to admire the magnificent building and its world-class art collections. Nowadays there are more than a million annual visitors to the Guggenheim making it one of Spain’s top tourist attractions.

Getxo Cruise Terminal: The popularity of Bilbao has slowly caught the attention of the cruise line industry with a growing number of companies starting to schedule a day in the Port of Bilbao. This year an estimated 95,000 passengers will pass through the city’s new cruise terminal which is located in the pleasant suburb of Getxo, some 15km to the north of Bilbao’s historic centre. Some cruise lines provide shuttle buses from the port to Plaza Moyúa in the city centre. If this option isn’t made available to you there are a variety of convenient ways to visit Bilbao of which the excellent Metro service is most recommended.

Please note that Brittany Ferries’ services from England arrive in the Port of Zierbena to the north-west of Getxo. They do not arrive at the Getxo Cruise Port.

Transport into Bilbao from Getxo

By Metro: From the cruise terminal you can take a very pleasant 20-minute walk to the metro stops of Gobela or Neguri. There are frequent departures into the city on Line 1 (direction Etxebarri). Alternatively, you can wait for the free shuttle service provided by the port authority which will drop you off at the metro stations of Areeta or Algorta in Getxo which are on the same line.

If you’re heading directly to the Guggenheim Museum you should get off at Moyúa metro station otherwise continue for two more stops to Casco Viejo to reach the historic centre. Metro services depart from Neguri every seven minutes and take just 23 minutes to the Moyúa stop (take the ‘Ercilla Guggenheim’ exit) from where it’s a 10-minute walk to the Guggenheim. Fares for this journey are remarkably cheap (about 2 euros each way), just buy a two zone ticket from the ticket machine.

For the return journey by metro be sure to get on Line 1 trains heading for Plentzia otherwise you’ll end up on the wrong side of the river for the cruise terminal. For maps and further information please refer to the Metro Bilbao Website .

By Taxi: There is always a good supply of taxis waiting outside the cruise terminal when a ship is in port but the drive into the city may prove longer than the metro journey due to traffic congestion. In good traffic conditions the taxi ride shouldn’t take more than about 25 minutes and works out fairly cheap when shared amongst four passengers.

By Bus: The local Bilbobus service provides connections between Getxo and Bilbao centre on numbers 3411 and 3413. This is a cheap and efficient option though it is still slower than the highly recommended Metro.

Self-Guided Walking Tour

Your first reference point in the city is likely to be Plaza de Federico Moyúa as that is the location of the metro stop from Getxo as well as the drop-off point for most shuttle buses from the port. From here you can easily walk to the Guggenheim which is just 600m away from the northern side of the square. There’s a tourist information office conveniently located next to the entrance to the Guggenheim (Alameda de Mazarredo, 66) where you can pick up a city map and get other useful information.

What to See in Bilbao

Guggenheim Museum: Located on the banks of the River Nervión in Bilbao’s industrial heartland, this silver titanium structure was designed by Frank Gehry to reflect the city’s historic relationship with the sea. As soon as it opened in 1997 there was an a significant upturn in the local economy as tourists began arriving to admire the building from the riverside and visit the impressive art exhibitions within. Such has been its success that the term “Bilbao Effect” is used in economic circles when discussing urban regeneration projects. You can read more about the Guggenheim Museum here . If you are in time for lunch during your visit the Bistró Guggenheim Bilbao is available within the complex and has a terrace with river views. More upmarket is the Michelin-starred Nerua Guggenheim Bilbao which opens for lunch and dinner.

Museo Marítimo Ría de Bilbao (Ramón de la Sota Kaia, 1): The city’s maritime museum lies just a a 10 minute walk west of the Guggenheim along the riverside walkway. It is built on the site of a former shipyard and its exhibits focus largely on the city’s shipbuilding industry and show how the port was redeveloped in the post-industrial era.

Nervion Riverside Walkway: This walkway follows the river from the Museo Marítimo Ría de Bilbao to the west of the Guggenheim as far as El Puente del Arenal (Arenal Bridge) on the edge of the Casco Viejo. If you’ve visited the Guggenheim and are heading for the Casco Viejo simply turn right as you walk out of the museum and enjoy a pleasant 30 minute (2km) stroll along this riverside path to get to the Old Town. If this is too much walking for you then simply hop on the EuskoTran tram from outside the Guggenheim and get off at Teatro Arriaga in the Casco Viejo.

The ‘Creditrans’ travel card is handy if you plan on using multiple travel services as it covers all journeys on the metro system, city buses (Biblobus) and city tram (Euskotram). You buy it at any ticket machine and top it up with 5, 10 or 15 Euros depending on how much you plan to travel around.

Casco Viejo: If you’re walking from the Guggenheim Museum just go as far as Puente del Arenal where you cross the river into the Old Town. Historically this was a walled city made up of seven parallel streets. Today it remains a residential area where buildings display traditional medieval façades but is also a popular tourist destination. Highlights of this compact area include: Plaza Berria: Also known as Plaza Nueva, this square is home to some of the city’s oldest taverns and restaurants which are tucked away behind its many stone arches. Catedral de Santiago (Plaza Santiago 1): The city’s beautiful yet understated cathedral dates back to the 14th century making it one of Bilbao’s oldest religious buildings. Museo Vasco (Unamuno Miguel Plaza, 4): The city’s Basque Museum provides a fascinating history into the history of the Basque Country and its people.

Teatro Arriaga (Arriaga Plaza, 1): Overlooking the river, the city’s historic Opera House dates back to 1890. Today it is plays host to a number of musical, theatrical and operatic events throughout the year. You can check out what’s on during your visit on the Arriaga Theatre Website . La Iglesia de San Antón (Erribera Kalea, 24): Thanks mainly to its much photographed bell tower the Church of Saint Anthony the Great is one of the best recognised features of the Casco Viejo. The building originates from the 15th century but has had to be renovated on numerous occasions due to flood damage.

Mercado de la Ribera (Erribera Kalea, s/n): Located right next to the Church of San Antón is La Ribera which is reputedly Europe’s largest indoor market. Visitors can wander around a vast selection of stalls selling fresh food products from the sea and the Basque countryside. Museo de Arqueología (Mallona Galtzada, 2): This small archaeological museum provides an interesting insight into the Basque region and its people with exhibits dating back to Prehistoric times.

Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao (Plaza del Museo, 2): Located just a 5-minute walk south of the Guggenheim, Bilbao’s Fine Arts Museum is regarded as one of the finest museum’s of its type in Spain. Its exhibits date back to the 12th century and include a fine selection of Basque art. Highlights of the museum include works by Goya, Velazquez, El Greco and Picasso as well as pieces by French artists Gauguin and Cezanne.

Puente de Vizcaya: Located just 3km south of the Getxo Cruise terminal, the Vizcaya Bridge is the world’s oldest transporter bridge. Built in 1893 it connects the towns of Portugalete and Las Arenas (part of Getxo) across the Nervión River. It has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in the Industrial Heritage category. Cruise ship passengers can walk to the bridge or take the port shuttle as far as the Areeta metro station which is close to the bridge. Visitors can either take a lift to the top of the bridge then walk across it or take the gondola to the other side.

Funicular de Artxanda (Funikularreko Plaza): On the opposite side of the river from the Guggenheim and a 20 minute walk north of the Casco Viejo is the funicular which transports passengers up Monte Artxanda. At the top there are some beautiful gardens from where you get great views over the city and the Basque countryside. This is a nice place to have lunch before walking back down into the city.

Bilbao Shore Excursions

If this is your first time in Bilbao and you’re only in port for the day then you should head into the city, visit the Guggenheim and discover some of the other tourist attractions. However, if you’ve been in Bilbao previously and are keen to discover what else the region has to offer the most popular shore excursions are as follows:

Guernica: Located 45km east of the Getxo cruise port is the historic Basque town of Guernica which is famous for the horrendous bombing it suffered during the Spanish Civil War . This event was later portrayed by Pablo Picasso in his famous work of the same name. San Sebastián: Located some 110km along the coast to the east, San Sebastián is a resort city is best known for its beautiful beaches, its old town which is packed with tapas bars and for its wealth of Michelin-star restaurants (9 at the last count).

Cruise Extension: Practicalities

The best way to get pintxos are at one of the many pintxo bars located in Bilbao. To find a popular one, head to Calle Ledesma where bars serving pintxo line the street and offer a plethora of outdoor seating.

Culture & History of the Bilbao Cruise Port

The origins of Bilbao date back to 1300 when it became a city-state. The Old Town area of Las Siete Calles flourished over the centuries, particularly after trade began with the Americas. Basque fishermen and merchants created strong ties to New England, and the city became a focal point for iron and steelworks, shipbuilding, and chemical plants.  In 1937, Bilbao became part of Franco and Basque nationalists were punished. This created an economic decline that continued throughout the 1900s, but recent decades have seen the city’s economy flourish again, largely thanks to the banking and tourism industries.

Bilbao is a vibrant city that embraces its Basque heritage while also proudly moving into the 21st century, with a strong influence in architecture and design. When visiting the Bilbao cruise port of call, you’ll find that two languages are largely spoken: Basque and Spanish, with Basque being the first language of many locals.

Bilbao Port Facilities & Location

Cruises to Bilbao, Spain, will actually dock in Getxo, which is located about a 20-minute drive from Bilbao’s city center. Your ship will dock in the cruise terminal, which is adjacent to a leisure marina, a beach, and a pretty promenade.

Transportation in Bilbao

Bilbao has a city center that is fairly easy to walk around and see all the main sights. You can also save your energy by taking the metro or bus system around the city. Taxis are easy to recognize with their white exterior that features a red stripe on the side. You’ll find them at taxi stations throughout Bilbao as well as lined up outside the cruise terminal in Getxo. River cruise boats can also get you between sights, such as to the Guggenheim Museum.

Shopping Near the Bilbao Cruise Port

For clothing and souvenirs, you’ll find plenty of shops in which to browse in the Gran Via shopping district. Located on and perpendicular to the street called Gran Via, you’ll find high streets and designer goods from some of the most popular brands around.

If you want to bring home some local spices and other foodie finds, head to Mercado de la Ribera, a bustling food market located by the river. Even some of the city’s top restaurant chefs find their produce for the day’s menu at this market.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The Euro is the official currency in Bilbao, just like in the rest of Spain. You’ll find ATMs all over the city that dispense Euro notes.

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Bilbao, but it is appreciated. The amount to tip is completely discretionary, but generally 5-10% to taxi drivers is given. Small change is a typical tip for cafes and bars, while nice restaurants likely deserve a 10% tip.

A modern, dynamic and bright building

The station has been conceived as a great rectangular glass container bearing in mind the differentiation between passenger and luggage flows with independent lanes and stairways. It is 15 metres high with 3,200m² of useable surfaces and consists of two main floors with a mezzanine in between.

The hall and tourist information are on the lower floor where embarking passenger reception and check-in take place; there is also ample space for disembarking passenger luggage collection. The mezzanine accommodates the VIP lounge and offices, while the waiting area, embarking and disembarking passenger control area and disembarking area are on the first floor.

New passenger terminal

In addition, there is a movable gangway 169 metres long next to the building for passenger access to vessel embarkation/disembarkation.

Direct vessel access

The station opens out towards the vessels, thus facilitating embarking and disembarking movements, and guaranteeing passenger comfort. Passengers access the vessel directly, and safely, without having to walk along the pier, thanks to the above-mentioned movable gangway. In addition, this infrastructure, adapts to the height of the embarkation doors of any vessel, independently of size, and enables access to persons with reduced mobility.

Luggage and ship supplies movements, take place at ground level, next to the berthing area through a zone completely free of passenger movements.

Cruise ship carrying 1,500 passengers stuck in Spain port due to Bolivian passengers' visa problems

A cruise ship reportedly carrying 1,500 passengers is stuck in the Spanish port of Barcelona due to the visa problems of a group of Bolivian passengers who were due to disembark there

BARCELONA, Spain -- A cruise ship reportedly carrying 1,500 passengers was stuck Wednesday in the Spanish northeastern port of Barcelona due to the visa problems of a group of Bolivian passengers who were due to disembark there, officials said.

Authorities say 69 Bolivians were not being allowed to leave the ship because they lacked valid documents to enter the European border-free Schengen area. Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told The Associated Press she received reports some of the stranded Bolivians had been duped into obtaining fake visas but had no further information.

“We have asked the families to indicate who has processed this visa and we have not gotten answers,” she said, adding she heard it was possible the Bolivians would be transferred to a different ship.

Spain's national police was looking into the possibility of a fake visa scam, Duarte said.

Spanish state news agency Efe and other media said some 1,500 passengers were on board the MSC Armony hoping to continue the cruise to Croatia.

Bolivia's deputy foreign affairs minister, Fernando Pérez, said the country was waiting "to see what the Spanish authorities decide what to do.”

A statement from the Bolivian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said the Bolivian Embassy in Spain and the country’s Consulate General in Barcelona “are carrying out the pertinent steps to address this case,” coordinating with Spanish authorities, as well as with the MSC Cruises Company.

MSC Cruises said in a statement the Bolivians included families and children.

It said the “passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil. We have been informed by the authorities that the visas are not valid for entry into the Schengen area. As a result, passengers have not been able to disembark in Barcelona, which was their final destination.”

The company said the ship remained in port while it works with authorities to facilitate the process.

The Schengen area is an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries, most from the European Union.

This story was corrected to show that the Schengen zone is a European rather than European Union creation and comprises 29 countries.
