Bill Callahan @ QMU, Glasgow, 5 Nov
The celebrated american singer-songwriter’s show breathes life and warmth into qmu.
A chilly Bonfire Night spent in the company of Bill Callahan is a very appealing concept. Glasgow’s Queen Margaret Union is packed for the sold-out show, and with no support act preceding Callahan the crowd waits excitedly in the near darkness of the venue.
On the stage under yellow spotlights, Callahan is a slender figure in a black sport coat. He’s joined by guitarist Mark Kenzie, saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi, and veteran indie-rock drummer Jim White, whose wild and extravagant style is a captivating performance all by itself.
Callahan strums straight into First Bird, the opener of his new record YTI⅃AƎЯ . 'And we’re coming out of dreams / As we’re coming back to dreams', he sings in his instantly affecting, deep baritone voice, and the words take on new significance when heard live, in the glow of a shared experience.
Glasgow is one of his favourite places to perform, Callahan says – and he’s “not just saying that.” It’s true he chooses his words sagely, and he’s a controlled presence on stage; when fans scream out to him, he seems at first to not react, then after a pause quips: “You’re animals. I like animals.”
It’s a wild and energetic show; mingling old and new material, the set frequently shifts pace and tone, keeping us on our toes. Songs end with vibrant improvisations, Callahan giving space to his extraordinary bandmates. While the band are clearly a unit, there’s a rawness and disorder to the show that gives it life force. Callahan commands the stage naturally, unpretentiously, and seems to genuinely love to be here performing.
The songs chosen are on the lighter, airier side of Callahan’s discography. The darkest moment comes with a rendition of the old Smog song Rock Bottom Riser, Callahan’s vocals dulled and deadpan as he sings its mournful words. There’s also a delightfully rough cover of Hank Williams Jr.’s O.D.’d in Denver, which Callahan has previously recorded with Bonnie “Prince” Billy.
The highlight of the show comes somewhere in the middle with Coyotes, a dreamy, off-kilter love song from Callahan’s newest record. Hearing it performed live is feeling it come to life, unfolding before us like a vast, luminous landscape. 'That is how and why I love you now and have always and will always love you now / Yes I am… your loverman', Callahan sings, filling the venue with warmth and shared gratitude.

Bill Callahan Announces New Album YTI⅃AƎЯ, 2022 Tour Dates
Aka "reality" spelled backwards
Bill Callahan has announced his new album, YTI⅃AƎЯ , which, in case you didn’t guess, is the word “reality” spelled backwards. The project will arrive on digital platforms and CD on October 14th via Drag City, with the vinyl edition releasing next year. He also unveiled a new run of California tour dates (grab your tickets here ).
The lo-fi artist’s main collaborators on YTI⅃AƎЯ were Matt Kinsey on guitar, Emmett Kelly on bass/backing vocals, Sarah Ann Phillips on piano/backing vocals, and Jim White on drums. In a statement, Callahan explained the motivation behind the album.
“I wanted to make a record that addressed or reflected the current climate,” he said. “It felt like it was necessary to rouse people — rouse their love, their kindness, their anger, rouse anything in them. Get their senses working again. I guess there was already plenty of anger! But we needed a better anger.”
He continued, “I wanted sounds and words that made you feel and that lifted you up… I went for horns because horns are heralds, triumphs, second line funerals and just breath forced through a metal maze or amusement park slide. And I wanted voices, I wanted multiple voices, not just mine. There is too much of just mine right now. So there are 6 or 7 people singing on this record.”
Pre-orders are ongoing. See the artwork and tracklist below.
To support the album, Callahan will kick off a tour of the UK on November 1st in Bristol, after which he’ll return stateside for a series of California shows in cities like San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and Los Angeles. Tickets are available now via Ticketmaster .
Callahan’s last album was 2020’s Gold Record . After that, he covered Billie Eilish’s “Wish You Were Gay” with Bonnie “Prince” Billy and The High Llamas’ Sean O’Hagan. The track would later appear on Callahan and Billy’s covers album Blind Date Party alongside their versions of “Blackness of the Night” by Yusuf/Cat Stevens, “OD’d in Denver” by Hank Williams Jr., and Dave Rich’s “I’ve Made Up My Mind.”

Bill Callahan at Stereo, Glasgow, Scotland, August 24th, 2009
It’s a damp, humid Sunday evening and tucked away in a cobbled lane at the heart of Glasgow’s city centre, Stereo is the venue for the only Scottish date on Bill Callahan’s European tour. He’s promoting his latest release, Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle, his second without his famous sobriquet.
The last time I attended a gig at Stereo, Damien Jurado played a wonderful set to a small, yet enthusiastic crowd. This time around, the basement is completely full. A young couple wriggle their way to the front, others ready their cameras and iPhones, layers of clothing are removed, beers are guzzled: it gets warmer by the minute.
Opening the evening’s proceedings with a pleasant acoustic set is Sophia Knapp, singer and guitarist with Lights, Callahan’s label mates at Drag City. Callahan takes to the stage with his Gibson Les Paul together with drummer Luis Martinez, guitarist Jaime Zuverza, bassist/cellist Kris Youmans and violinist Andra Kulans. The band open with “Jim Cain,” the opening track on the new record and Callahan’s tribute to legendary pulp novelist James M. Cain before launching into the extraordinary “All Thoughts Are Prey To Some Beast” — another from Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle and surely one of the tracks of the year.
Whilst not as resolutely monosyllabic as the likes of Mark Lanegan, Callahan is not one for banter between songs. Once the applause dies down he thanks the crowd, waits for Youmans to fetch a replacement bow, sips some water and launches into the next number. Most of the songs on Eagle get an airing as well as several from 2007’s Woke On A Whaleheart including the wonderful “Diamond Dancer” (“She danced so hard/She danced herself into a diamond”). Other highlights include the beautiful “Our Anniversary” from 2003’s Supper .

Bill Callahan (born June 3, 1966) is an American lo-fi and alternative singer, songwriter and guitar player formerly of the group Smog, from Silver Spring, Maryland, U.S.
Callahan’s early musical endeavours were defined by his lo-fi, experimental approach using substandard instruments and poor quality recording equipment, given it was all he had. His string of early releases, all under the moniker, including his debut album “Sewn to the Sky” (1990) are distinctively instrumental albums, featuring discordant and dissonant sounds that often went without much melodic structure.
After the release of his debut, Callahan signed to Drag City, where he had access to professional recording equipment and a cache of musical instruments that helped highlight the musician’s talent and creativity. He then went on to release 12 albums under the Smog pseudonym, worked with esteemed producers such as Jim O’Rourke and Tortoise’s John McEntire and collaborated with then partner Cynthia Dall. His later albums under the Smog name are distinct from his earlier work in that it returns to simpler instrumentation but retains the strong and interesting songwriting fans had come to expect.
In 2007 Callahan released his debut album under his own name entitled “Woke on a Whaleheart” and featured a similar musical aspect to Smog’s later albums whilst combining rich textures of soul and gospel genres. It’s follow-up, 2009’s “Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle” included luscious string and brass arrangements by Brian Beattie and around the same time Callahan contributed songs to four tribute albums for Judee Sill, Kath Bloom, Chris Knox and Merge Records.
In 2010 the musician released the live album “Rough Travel for a Rare Thing” and in the same year his debut novel “Letters to Emma Bowlcut”, also released via Drag City, which was a 79-page novelette comprised of a multitude of letters to and from a woman he met at a party. Callahan has subsequently released the albums “Apocalypse” in 2011, “Dream River” in 2013 and “Have Fun with God” in 2014 and achieved a cultish and esoteric following of supporters.
Live reviews
Bill Callahan is a singer-songwriter from Maryland in the U.S., though his genre can be a little hard to describe. Some potential genres include lo-fi, underground rock, and alternative country, but the bottom line is that his sound and performance is pretty unique. He does not seem to be the kind of musician to have huge shows, but rather performs in more intimate setups where he can really put the focus on the music and nothing else.
His attire and background are really nothing special, and by all appearances he really is a pretty average guy. However, the music changes all of that and his singing is something that it seems almost anyone can truly appreciate. He definitely seems to feed off of the crowd’s enthusiasm and puts on a good show, but there is not much of anything flashy to his performance. In some setups he plays with small ensembles, but he is obviously the star of every show and the others simply serve as background players.
While his albums and recordings are definitely great, there is a lot more to his live shows. Between the general benefits of live performance, like hearing the songs differently each time, and the emotion he shows while playing, it is definitely a great opportunity for any fan of his music.
Report as inappropriate
Bill never let's you down, even if he dislikes encores. He puts his show together with what seems to be a carefully selected handfull of his countless songs. Being a non-populist he make sure his stage appearances are quality from beginning to end, whether as a duo or, like this European tour, with a band. And travelling with him as a support warm-up, a clever and mysterious trio from Dallas, who reappears at the end of Bill's show. For people like me who has been listening to BC for quite a time, he never disappoints us, but it looked like the whole Rockefeller crowd thouroughly enjoyed themselves. And so did BC and his band.
Great set. Great venue. Bill Callahan and his band were a delight to listen to and watch. His songs mean a lot to a lot of people. And you could tell the band enjoyed playing them for us. They all delivered a stellar performance. We loved it!
He basically phoned in the entire show, sadly. It was a weird vibe, maybe something was off for him personally. Whatever the case it affected the performance. The bass player was great and totally into it. Maybe next time!
