Learn How To Sail

Few travellers can resist setting sail on the sparkling Mediterranean when in Barcelona! Here, I share the best sailing yacht tours , catamaran trips and motor boat tours , as well as private boat charters , and some unforgettable combined activities – such as Ferrari drive & sailing!

Life on the ocean waves! That’s what it’s all about. Blues skies, salty air, and the majesty of the Mediterranean unfurling in front of you as you sail out of Barcelona’s ports thirsty for adventure. (Hopefully with a copy of  Moby Dick and a bottle of rum tucked inside your cabin for good measure).

Barcelona is one of the best bases in the world for sailing holidays, with its clement weather , modern marinas and the wealth of picturesque coastal towns along the Costa Brava. Those with a week or so to spend at sea might also note the city’s proximity to the magical Balearic islands,  Majorca , Menorca and  Ibiza .

For the casual tourist … there are plenty of great sailing activities on offer in the Catalan capital, which can be enjoyed in a single afternoon, or less.

While for the casual tourist, who doesn’t have time for a weekend, let alone a week, on a boat, there are plenty of sailing activities on offer in the Catalan capital, which can be enjoyed in a single afternoon, or less, thus allowing more time for all the other fun things to do in the city !

You can even combine sailing with other fun activities, like wine tasting, supercar drives or helicopter flights! I go into more detail towards the end of this article .

What’s on Offer? How to Choose a Sailing Tour!

When choosing a sailing tour the first choice is whether you want to hire a private boat (with skipper), for just you and your partner, or friends and family. This can be done from as little as €250 for a 3-hr sail on an 8 metre yacht, with prices rising for bigger vessels. More details later on this page .

For most people, I would suggest that booking a space on public tour makes more sense, as it’s a lot more affordable and still plenty of fun. Broadly speaking, we can divide public sailing tours into three categories:

Sailing Yacht Tours

Sailing yacht tours are perhaps the most authentic experience as your skipper will rely on wind-power to captain your vessel and you’re sure to feel the ocean spray once in a while too! Prices start at €39 per person on a 1.5 hour Sailing Trip , while the in-demand Sunset Sailing Trips start at €69.

Catamaran tours are steadier and more comfortable, and still use windpower for the most part, but the experience is closer to a boat cruise. They are more affordable and you will share the vessel with a larger number of people.

Boat tours typically take place on big steady diesel-powered boats such as the famous Golodrinas ferries, although luxury, RIB and speedboat tour options also exist for adrenaline seekers!

Yacht life…. making the most of the Mediterranean!

Boat tours are all very well, but true sailors understand that the real thrill of sailing is to harness the power of the wind and plough the ocean furrows. If you’ve been on a yacht once or twice before, you can usually help the captain by winching in some ropes, or even steering the helm. While those who don’t know their port from their starboard (and have little intention of learning) can dedicate themselves to drinking champagne  on deck and working on their tan.

1. Sailing Tour (1.5 hrs) with Vermouth

This is the number one activity from Barcelona’s number one boat company, Sailing Experience . Their professional skippers will take you out on an 11 person sailboat for a 1.5 hour spin on the big blue. You’ll leave from Port Olimpic and, looking back across land, you’ll be able to admire views of the Olympic Village, sun-kissed city beaches and the modern skyscrapers of Poblenou. And you’ll do all that with a delicious glass of Catalan vermouth in your hand, or beer, sangria, wine or soft drinks, if you prefer. This tour runs four times a day (9:30am, 12pm, 2:30pm and 4:30pm) every day of the year – even on Christmas day – and costs just €39-44 per person.

Barcelona boasts some beautiful sunsets, and there are few places better to enjoy them than out on a boat with views back over the city’s rose-tinted skyline, glass of sparkling Cava in hand. The activity takes place on a 12-metre yacht with a maximum of 11 passengers, and also includes snacks and other beverages. After a hectic schedule of sightseeing, this is the perfect way to round off your day! Catamaran tours are affordable, relaxed and fun, and their twin hulls make them steadier than yachts, so I would recommend this option if you are prone to any seasickness. Catamarans vary in size, often fitting between 30 and 100 people, so obviously they are less exclusive than taking a trip in a yacht, and you may have to sit on the netting, but they offer good value for money. (They are also the vessel of choice for epic parties, if that’s your thing !).

5. Small-Group Catamaran Tour (2 hrs)

A great option if you want a bit more exclusivity than the larger catamaran tours, this small group option hosts a maximum of 30 people on board a gorgeous red-and-white catamaran, and even includes a free tapa (that’s singular of tapas!) and drink of your choice. Choose the day time tour and you can take advantage of a 30 minute swim stop and dive into the Mediterranean, or opt for the sunset cruise and enjoy the setting sphere. Reserve via Get Your Guide .

It doesn’t get much more affordable than this catamaran cruise which costs less than €25 per person and even includes a live jazz concert on board. 15. Wine Tasting & Sailing

Probably my favourite of all the activities on this page, I would highly recommend this excursion to anyone with half a day to spare in Barcelona. There are a few different options here, but you can either set sail from Barcelona to the nearby Alella wine region, to enjoy a sumptuous wine tasting overlooking the sea, or you can do the winery first and then sail back to Barcelona, merrily tipsy as you recline on deck (which would be my preference!). For the other leg of the journey, you can choose private transport by car, or you can ride along the coast on an electric bike. (You can even choose to e-bike it both ways, but then you would miss out on the sailing!). Check out Get Your Guide, where you can select the best option for you .

Afterwards you get to relax on a 1.5 hour sailing cruise, cocktail in hand. Prices start at just €110 for a combined 20 minutes Ferrari drive, plus 90 minutes of sailing. Yacht Charter Companies

There are a number of yacht charter companies in Barcelona, from whom you can hire you a variety of boats, including sailing yachts, motorboats and catamarans. If you’re a qualified sailor you can leave a deposit and rent a yacht bareboat, ie. without a skipper/crew, and get going. However, most companies provide the option of hiring a professional captain to make sure your sailing holiday doesn’t end in you shipwrecking yourself on a desert island and being forced to grow a Tom Hanks-style beard.

Barcelona Yacht Charter

This leading private charter company, directly affiliated with Barcelona Life, has an enviable array of vessels to choose from – from 1 to 12 berth sailing yachts, top notch motor yachts, three catamarans and several historical yachts. You’ll definitely be the envy of the Costa Brava swanning along the Mediterranean in the Llaüt “Sant Ramon” from 1904. Virtually all of their vessels are available both for bareboat rental or with a skipper and/or crew and hostess. They can also arrange sailing day trips, boat parties and luxury cruises for large corporate groups . Whatever you need, email us on  [email protected]  and we’ll get back to you with a price quote.

Sailing Holidays

Aspiring Buccaneers could even choose to spend a week or two in  Barcelona  learning the ropes (quite literally) on an RYA accredited sailing course that will have you hoisting, tacking and reefing up and down the rugged coastline of the Costa Brava.

Qualified sailors, meanwhile, can charter a yacht from Barcelona and take a leisurely (or not so leisurely) cruise around the Mediterranean, heading up to France or further down to Spain’s southern resort towns like Marbella.

We’re currently researching the best providers of sailing lessons and courses in and around Barcelona and the Costa Brava, where you can study for your  RYA sailing certificate , and become a qualified seafarer. We’ll be back to update this page shortly with this information.

Corporate Sailing Events

If you’re on this page looking for sailing activity for a corporate team building event then you’ve just struck gold. This sailing regatta allows up 400 people to take part, racing against each other on boats of up to 8 people. It’s a tonne of fun, and a great way to challenge your colleagues and also see them work together in a new way. Maybe that’s why Pepsi, Mars, Zurich, Unilever, DHL and Swarovski have all booked it for their staff in recent years. We work direct with the provider, with no mark up on the price, so just drop us an email on [email protected] with dates, group size, etc and you’ll hear back within 1 working day.

About the Author

Duncan the Author

Eleni Manoli

Hi Duncan, I am looking for a boat ride for two people as a gift for my boss, who is getting married and lives in Barcelona. Which one would you recommend? My boss and her partner are around 60 years old, so please take that under consideration, as they prefer things a little bit more comfortable. My budget for the both of them is around 220 EU, maybe stretching it to 250EU. By the way when I saw your picture I could not believe it. We met in Iguazu falls a few years back when my and my friend Agnes were travelling there. I have a few photos of the three of us when we went on the boat around the falls 🙂 Hope you are doing well and look forward to hearing back from you!

Hey Eleni, small world! That was a lovely day at Iguazu! I’m checking out some boat options for you now, and will be in touch! x

I am looking for a private boat trip for 24 people.

We want to sail for 3 hours near Barcelona with music and drinks all-in.

We would like to leave on July 1, 2023 in the afternoon. Around 2:00 PM approximately.

Do you have a boat available and can you offer a total price?

Hi Bjorn, hopefully you saw the catamaran options my partners sent over!

Best way for private boat requests is to send us an email. Many thanks!

Hi Duncan, I am trying to find a way of crossing the sea from Barcelona to Palma, on a sailing boat. We want to get to Palma from London, by not flying, and by using as little CO2 as we can. Diesel ferry boats use the dirtiest fuel and end up not being any mor eco-friendly than flying! We can take the train to Barcelona but I can’t find a friendly sailor to take us across to Palma and collect us a week later for the return trip. In these days of ‘green tourism’ it seems like these sailing holidaly and party boats are missing a trick. Many people like us want to do the right thing for the environment but still travel leaving a smaller a carbon footprint as possible. Any ideas Duncan? There are two of us. My husband has some sailing experience so could help with ropes and things 🙂 Best wishes, Sonja (Thame, England)

I am not sure this service exists to be honest, but there are some sailing holidays that depart from Barcelona to Mallorca… you might want to run this page through Google translate for example, or get in touch with them to find out what is possible.

https://www.sailwiz.com/velero-mallorca-barcelona

I can also send your enquiry to my sailing partners, just in case they have any boats going out that way. What dates are you looking at?

Barcelona From the Sea – Enjoy some sparkling views!

' src=

Boasting a sunny climate with the Mediterranean Sea as a sparkling backdrop, it is no wonder Barcelona is one of the most visited cities in Europe.

Joining a boat tour of Barcelona, its harbour and the beaches is an increasingly popular and exciting way to explore this stunning city.

1. Ports of Barcelona

1.1. port olimpic.

Port Olimpic is one of the most popular leisure districts of Barcelona. Part of the growing interest here stemmed from its creation for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

While 1992 is far behind us, this clever addition to the city is still enjoyed by tourists and locals.

The actual Port Olimpic today is a yachting harbour that the wealthy use to get onto the water with family and friends.

Whether you are approaching this port from the sea or the city, you will instantly notice the 154-metre tall twin skyscrapers.

Aerial View Of Port Olimpic

These two buildings, the office tower of Torre Mapfre and the Hotel Arts are the two tallest buildings in Barcelona.

The Port Olimpic Beaches

Towards the sail-shaped Hotel Vela, there is a lovely promenade. This will take you past the beaches of Barceloneta and Sant Sebastiá up to Port Vell.

Following the coast north, you will end up at the beaches of Nova Icaria and Bogatell.

Port Olimpic Nightlife

Dancing the night away at a club in Barcelona is a memorable, fun and freeing experience. Barcelona is known for its nightlife that typically carries into the wee hours of the morning.

It only makes sense that this beachy city would have vibrant clubs along the glistening sea. In front of the Hotel Arts and directly in the yacht harbour, there are plenty of nightclubs and bars.

The most popular ones are Shoko, Opium mar and CDLC. These are sprawling places with interior dance floors and large terraces directly on the beach.

During the day, enjoy the many terraces; in the evening, you can have a lovely meal.

Port Olimpic 994065 1280

1.2. Port Vell

Before the 1992 Olympic Games, Port Vell was degenerated and run down. Much like many areas along the seashore of Barcelona, Port Vell (the old harbour) was renovated and restored for the Olympics.

In a huge restructure project this Port, which neighbours Barceloneta, has been completely transformed to open up the city to the beautiful sea.

Port Vell went from an industrial wasteland to an area of yacht harbours that have been created. These harbours encompass a peninsula with a large entertainment complex.

Included in the entertainment complex is the most popular attraction: The Barcelona Aquarium.

Here you can actually dive with Mediterranean sharks! Simply cross the wooden swing bridge along Rambla Mar to a gorgeous harbour promenade. Find the Maremagnum complex with shops, bars and restaurants.

The stunning Maritime Museum (Museo maritime) is situated on your right. Along the pier on your left lies the Barcelona World Trade Center, which is a hotel and convention center in the middle of Port Vell.

Port Vell’s makeover has added vibrancy and color to the city while celebrating the sea and the history of Barcelona.

2. Tours on the Sea

2.1. eco boat trip barcelona port skyline.

While the ports of Barcelona are lovely to look at from dry land, get an even closer look by boat. On this 40 minute eco boat trip, you will discover the port and a part of the coastline of Barcelona.

When walking around these areas of Barcelona, the iconic W hotel and the cruise ships in the distance are hard to miss. See them in detail with this tour.

Eco Boat

Offering a completely different perspective of the city, this tour takes you away from the crowded streets and into the serenity of the sea.

Relax and sit back on the eco boat, taking in the refreshing smell of the sea as it blankets your face as the dazzling views unfold.

This service is offered every day, but please note that weather conditions could alter the service.

2.2. The Wooden Boat Tour

Be captivated by the stunning work of art that is the Goleta Karya .

It is a unique boat for you to experience this sightseeing tour. The wooden schooner was built in Bodrum, Turkey. Comprised of fine materials and modern details, it is a treasure found on the Barcelona coast

You have the choice of two different routes, both showing the most incredible views of Barcelona.

The Wooden Boat Tour

The first choice is called the Water District Experience. A 30-minute cruise in the Port of Barcelona, you will feel immersed in the busy life of the most important port of the Mediterranean Sea.

Experience the fisherman life in Barcelona as well as get closer to the Montjuic Mountain.

The second option is the Blue Side Experience. If you are hoping to gain a different perspective on the popular sights of the city as well as discover the coast, this is the route for you.

This exciting tour showcases the Tibidabo Mountain the background.

Both options are available from April 1- October 31.

We booked Catamaran Orsom for a Saturday evening and it was beautiful. We took our own prossecco and watched the sun set to the sound of Jazz. We were also given blankets and everyone was very friendly. I would highly recommend.

Great value for money, amazing views of the city. Staff very friendly jazz player very entertaining.

I took my son, daughter and hubby on this ride, we enjoyed Jazz music whilst watching the waves. The children were made to feel extra special by the captain when he invited them to Sail the boat. I definitely recommend this excursion and certainly worth the money!

The ride was smooth and relaxing and there is plenty of space on board to hang out with friends and drink. Nice music as well. The price is reasonable and staff were very friendly.

Cruise ship held in Barcelona due to forged Schengen visas

A cruise ship with around 1,500 passengers was prevented from continuing its onward journey from Barcelona due to forged visas among some on board.

There were 69 Bolivians on the Armonía ship, operated by MSC Cruises, whose Schengen visas had been falsified, the company said, confirming reports in Spanish media.

The group of Bolivians, which included families with children, had embarked in Brazil for the journey to Barcelona, where their voyage was to end. But, following visa checks, they were not allowed to leave the ship to go ashore like the other passengers.

Schengen visas allow their holders to travel among nearly 30 European countries.

Meanwhile, the Armonía had planned to continue its journey on Tuesday through the Mediterranean for other passengers, but the vessel has instead been held up in Barcelona pending the investigation.

Some relatives of the Bolivians on board who live in Spain told Spanish media that the people had been victims of a scam.

They said an agency in South America had offered the passage and visas online and charged up to $10,000 per person. This agency also cancelled return flight tickets that had been promised after the cruise ship left Brazil for Europe, La Vanguardia newspaper quoted relatives as saying.

However, the police have not ruled out the possibility that the Bolivians actually wanted to enter Spain illegally using knowingly forged documents.

It was unclear when the ship would be able to continue its journey and what would happen to the Bolivian passengers.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — A cruise ship reportedly carrying 1,500 passengers was stuck Wednesday in the Spanish northeastern port of Barcelona due to the visa problems of a group of Bolivian passengers who were due to disembark there, officials said.

Authorities say 69 Bolivians were not being allowed to leave the ship because they lacked valid documents to enter the European border-free Schengen area. Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told The Associated Press she received reports some of the stranded Bolivians had been duped into obtaining fake visas but had no further information.

“We have asked the families to indicate who has processed this visa and we have not gotten answers,” she said, adding she heard it was possible the Bolivians would be transferred to a different ship.

Spain’s national police was looking into the possibility of a fake visa scam, Duarte said.

Spanish state news agency Efe and other media said some 1,500 passengers were on board the MSC Armony hoping to continue the cruise to Croatia.

Bolivia’s deputy foreign affairs minister, Fernando Pérez, said the country was waiting “to see what the Spanish authorities decide what to do.”

A statement from the Bolivian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said the Bolivian Embassy in Spain and the country’s Consulate General in Barcelona “are carrying out the pertinent steps to address this case,” coordinating with Spanish authorities, as well as with the MSC Cruises Company.

MSC Cruises said in a statement the Bolivians included families and children.

The company said the ship remained in port while it works with authorities to facilitate the process.

The Schengen area is an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries, most from the European Union.

This story was corrected to show that the Schengen zone is a European rather than European Union creation and comprises 29 countries.

How these cruise passengers missed boarding, got stranded in Africa

Both Americans and Australians were left at port after an excursion ran long.

After what seemed like a dream trip, several American travelers were left stranded at port in West Africa mid-cruise while traveling from Cape Town, South Africa, to Barcelona, Spain.

Jay and Jill Campbell told ABC News Myrtle Beach affiliate WPDE that they were in the first week of a three week voyage aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines when they stopped just off the coast of West Africa.

The couple and others opted to tour the nearby island of São Tomé and Príncipe on the afternoon of March 27, and when the excursion ran late, they said they brought it to the guides' attention.

"We were like, 'our time is getting short,'" Jay Campbell recalled, at which point he said the guide let them know, "'No problem we can get you back in an hour.'"

Upon their return, the passengers said cruise officials refused to let them aboard the ship, even as the local Coast Guard had ferried the group to the anchored vessel.

"The harbormaster tried to call the ship. The captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL the customer service emergency number," Jay Campbell said. "They said the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is via email. They're not responding to our emails."

The Campbells say they were left stranded along with four other Americans and two Australians -- of whom one is a paraplegic, one has a heart condition and one is pregnant. Some did not have credit cards or medication that was left on board.

Cruise expert Stewart Chiron, known as The Cruise Guy, told ABC News that "the bottom line was, they were hours late, the ship was ready to go."

"More than likely that the anchor was already up, and the ship was already possibly moving," he said.

He continued, "Any operation at that point to get these passengers back on the ship would have caused tremendous delays, and safety would have been a major concern."

In a statement to ABC News, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines said, "On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time."

They continued, "While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship's intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel."

The spokesperson added that the passports for the passengers who did not return at the all aboard time "were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port, as per the regular protocol."

"Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call," they said.

The Campbells said that their eight person group spent 15 hours traveling through six countries in an attempt to rejoin the Norwegian Dawn ship in Banjul, Gambia, on April 1. However, the ship couldn't dock due to low tide, so they are now trying to get to Senegal where the ship is meant to dock on Tuesday.

The Norwegian spokesperson said, "Unfortunately the ship was unable to safely dock in the destination due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage. While we share in our guests' disappointment, this modification was made with great consideration for their safety and that of our crew, which is our top priority."

The cruise line contacted the guests "regarding this itinerary adjustment and provided them with authorization to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal on April 2, 2024."

In light of the "series of unfortunate events outside of our control," the spokesperson said Norwegian Cruise Lines "will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal" and are still in communication with the guests to provide additional information as it becomes available.

In a separate, unrelated situation that took place coincidentally on the same day of the voyage, the spokesperson said, "An 80-year-old woman was medically disembarked after being evaluated by our onboard medical team, who thought it best that she receive further assessment and treatment as needed from a local hospital."

"In instances such as these, as the guest was released from the hospital and in a coherent state, our protocol is to contact the guest directly, as we would not have the authority to share any medical details with anyone else without their expressed consent," the spokesperson added, saying they worked with the port agent to receive updates.

"The guest has since been escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, and then put in the care of airport staff to continue her journey to the United States, where she has now made a safe return," they said.

Spanish government officials in the city said they are in contact with Bolivian authorities and the MSC Cruises Company to resolve the situation. The ship had sailed from Brazil to cover a route in the Mediterranean Sea.

Spanish state news agency Efe and other media said that some 1,500 passengers were meanwhile on board the MSC Armony hoping to continue the cruise to Croatia.

A statement from the Bolivian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said the Bolivian Embassy in Spain and the country’s Consulate General in Barcelona “are carrying out the pertinent steps to address this case,” co-ordinating with Spanish authorities, as well as with the MSC Cruises Company.

MSC Cruises said in a statement the Bolivians included families and children.

It said the “passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil. We have been informed by the authorities that the visas are not valid for entry into the Schengen area. As a result, passengers have not been able to disembark in Barcelona, which was their final destination.”

The company said the ship remained in port while it works with authorities to facilitate the process.

The Schengen area is an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries, most from the European Union.
