Marlow to Henley Boat Trip

The weather was wonderful so we decided to take a boat trip. The scenery and wild life were marvellous. The commentary was very informative. We walked along the river bank to the Angel on the Bridge and sipped Peroni on the terrace. We had a pleasant time watching the boats go by, before sailing back. A lovely trip.

What a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. My mum and I had a few river tips on Salter's Steamers. We felt as though we had slipped back in time as the boats are about 100 years old. I do, however, recommend taking something soft to sit on. Don't expect quick service for drinks because the steamers operate on a skeleton crew with one person manning the bar and also helping with the ropes and moorings in the locks. Sit back and watch the world go by.

We decided to catch the steamer (which wasn't a steamer) to Henley-on-Thames from the Caversham bridge just to experience being on a vessel that was going along the Thames and through the various lochs. The boat was basic with pew type seats sitting loose on the deck, but at the sped we were travelling there was no chance of the seats moving around. We arrived in Henley half an hour later than scheduled. This didn't worry us as we were not in any hurry to be anywhere. I can't actually see how they can keep to any kind of timetable as no one can tell how many boats will be waiting to go through any particular loch, and you have to wait your turn, I think we went through four on the way. But we thoroughly enjoyed the tranquility of moving slowly along, taking in the lovely countryside and the beautiful homes that are built on the Thames; and after having had a number of non-stop days we found it to be very rejuvenating. A hot drink was available on board if required, we didn't bother as it was only around 2 & 3/4 hrs. A very pleasant way to spend the time.

We really enjoyed this boat trip I went with my two year old and my parents, the staff were really welcoming and entertaining!! You can buy drinks on board and just relax and enjoy the ride. They told you lots of interesting facts along the way in a lighthearted manor with a few added jokes. We will be doing this again and highly recommend the service thank you salters steamers!

Easy to find we climbed aboard the Salters boat only to be guided onto a smaller vessel that was well hidden at the side of its larger sister. Like everyone else I thought I had paid to travel on the larger vessel. On board there were two skippers who were both very entertaining and knowledgeable of the area. It was a comfortable 45 min trip that offered refreshments from a small mini bar. Would recommend this trip to anyone visiting the area.

On Tuesday we came down to Marlow. The town is lovely, We wanted to use the service but we couldn't found ticket office, we have seen the leaflets, we took one and tried 10times to call number but nobody answered! No timetable only when the boat should leave but no information when will be back (this information was important as we wanted check how much spare time we have) . Shame as we really wanted to use the service, but if someone doesn't want to earn money, this is the way to do it,

Henley on Thames

Home of the Royal Regatta, a stunning riverside town steeped in history and packed full of world class eateries

Henley on Thames

Henley on Thames is one of the jewels of the river, a stunning reach , complete with the long near straight regatta course, the iconic Temple Island downstream of the town and stone multi-arch bridge dating back to 1786. Henley is packed full of boutiques, cafes, pubs (it is the original home of Brakspears Brewery) and high-quality restaurants. Shortly after exiting Marsh Lock at the top of the reach, parkland opens up on the Oxfordshire bank and the River and Rowing Museum comes in to view which is a drop-off and boarding point for many of our Henley cruises. Head further downstream and you reach the centre of the town, dating back to the 1100s and even today boasting a street layout that was set out in the 1300s. Modern Henley embraces its place in history and has protected the period charm. For one week in summer the sound of popping corks and clinking of Pimms glasses takes over as regatta followers watch elite rowing teams from across the globe, battle against one another in a way that has not changed dramatically for decades.
