If I’m out and about and I don’t have a bag slung across my body, I feel naked and unprepared. It’s like venturing into a dungeon without any health potions. What if I need ChapStick? Did I bring ChapStick? How can I fit my phone, keys, and face mask all in the truncated pockets of my jeans? Where do I put the cool rock I just found? Extra storage capacity is essential to my everyday carry, and being able to swing the bag around to the front and grab anything I need is crucial. Backpacks are better for heavy loads or all-day trekking, but for lightweight everyday needs, the best messenger bags are hard to beat.

I’ve gone through my fair share of messenger bags, even before writing about them was part of my job. But Waterfield Designs’ Executive Messenger is hands-down the best messenger bag I’ve ever laid my hands on. Messenger bags are often bulky, even when they’re not full. The leather Executive Messenger addresses this problem by being slim but flexible. There’s just enough internal structure to keep my gadgets safe but enough flexibility that after a few uses it will start to contour to your body. Plus, it has ample interior pockets and pouches to store small things, like lip balm and charging cables. The interior lining is a bright orange, which helps with visibility.

It’s a stylish bag (very dark academia and scholar-chic), and it’s built to last, with a leather outer that has so far weathered nicely. They’re handmade to order, and that attention to detail really shines through. It feels sturdy, the seams are thick and robust, and the pockets and front latch seem like they’re made to last a lifetime.

A Ludicrously Capacious Bag

Bellroy's Tokyo Work Bag is a deceptive little thing. From the outside it looks like any other messenger bag—if a bit more stylish. But once you open it up, that's when you start to realize this isn't any old bag. Inside you'll find a wealth of thoughtfully placed pockets and dividers that make it easy to keep your cables, batteries, and precious trinkets all safe and separate from each other. It seriously feels like it's bigger on the inside. It also has a padded pocket big enough to fit a 16-inch laptop.

Even when it's fully stuffed, it never balloons too far outside its ideal silhouette, which is always a plus. The exterior is made from recycled polyester, and it includes a luggage strap on the back so you can plop it over the handle of a rolling suitcase.

For 9-to-5 Commuters

Waterproof and built to last a lifetime, Chrome’s Mini Metro messenger bag is a classic. From its signature seatbelt-buckle strap to its double-clasp closure mechanism, this is designed with the life of a bike messenger in mind. You load it up and swing it around your back, keeping all the essentials safely packed away.

The waterproof finish and liner are heavy-duty too. I carried one of these for years through storms and snow. Each time, it was fully loaded with a MacBook and an assortment of notebooks, and everything managed to stay dry. The Metro is also a great choice if you need a little more storage space, as it will carry everything you need to and from the office.

Our Favorite Camera Sling

If you're looking for a camera sling to end all camera slings, take a look at Wandrd's Rogue. Inside you'll find the usual complement of zippered pockets and customizable dividers to keep your camera and lenses safe and separate. WIRED reviews editor Julian Chokkattu loves using the exterior straps to attach his tripod, making for a very portable go bag that can carry all the most important gear.

It's comfortable to wear for long periods even when it's chock full of hardware. The way the exterior zippers are laid out, you can sling it around to your front and have immediate access to the interior without having to take it off or wrestle with it. You can fit a small tablet in the rear zippered pocket, but it's worth paying for the optional Laptop Case ($59) to accommodate up to 14- or 16-inch machines.

Extra Durable

Carhartt has a reputation for hard-wearing clothes and accessories, and the Crossbody Snap is no exception. The water-resistant polyester material is thick and sturdy, and the seams and pockets feel like they'll stand up to just about anything you throw at 'em. I'm always on the lookout for a small bag that can carry an iPad and a couple other accessories, and lately the one I've been reaching for has been the Crossbody Snap. It's just tall enough to fit an 11-inch iPad Pro, but it more comfortably fits the new iPad Mini. Plus, it looks nice with just about any outfit.

Best Extra-Large Messenger

The Mission Workshop Khyte is a modern take on the classic messenger bag. Built to be fully waterproof, the Khyte is designed for heavy use. The interior pockets are intuitive and expansive; every time I thought I couldn't fit more stuff into it, I found extra room and pockets. This bag is practically a hiking backpack. It can carry just about anything and stay bone dry at the same time. There's plenty of style to go with the substance too.

The exterior closures are magnetic and snap securely and easily into place, and it supports Mission Workshop's Arkiv system, so if you don't have enough pockets and pouches, you can always add more. The Khyte is not the kind of bag you throw a tablet into and carry to a café. It's the kind you bring when biking to work in a rainstorm.

Best Small Shoulder Bag

Soft and lightweight, the Greenland Pocket is an excellent everyday bag. It's big enough to carry a Nintendo Switch, a notebook, and a variety of essentials. The cotton and polyester exterior is water-resistant enough to stand up to Portland rainfall, and it's really soft—so much so that I sometimes wonder if I carry it around just to pet it. It's also a stylish option that pairs just as well with winter wear as it does with lighter spring and summer outfits. Overall, this is one of my all-time favorite small-sized shoulder bags.

For Everyday Elegance

The Pearl crossbody is a lovely, elegant shoulder bag with two zippered pockets, a central compartment, and tons of internal organization. It's honestly the one I grab on my way out the door on most days. It's small enough that it's not bulky, and it's big enough to fit an 11-inch iPad Pro in the central pocket. Plus, it looks nice. It pairs well with most business casual or casual-casual outfits without being ostentatious.

I also like the fact that the pockets are accessible from the top, and not obstructed by a flap. That way I really can just reach down and grab my lip balms, or pick up a cool rock to put in there. The interior organization is perfect for stowing cards, keys, and devices, and it keeps everything separate but easy to spot. The price is steep, but we've seen it dip below $200 before.

A Multipurpose Camera Sling

The Everyday Sling comes in a variety of sizes, but my favorite is the 10-liter version. It's technically a camera bag, but it also works as a standard small messenger. With ample pockets for organization and optional flexible dividers (to store a camera body and a lens), this bag can also comfortably fit a MacBook Air, a charger, and plenty of other accessories. Even fully loaded, the Everyday Sling maintains a slim profile that makes it easy to keep it close to your body. The strap is made from a seatbelt-like material, designed to slide easily over clothes, and it doesn’t bunch up on your shoulder as some straps do.

It's spacious enough to carry makeup, my 11-inch iPad Pro, a power bank, and loads of other random supplies. And it's comfortable to carry either slung at the side or cinched up like a backpack.

Sleek and Small

The Peak Design Field Pouch V2 excels in its role as a small everyday-carry bag for a couple of reasons. First of all, it's weatherproof and doesn't soak up water even when you're out in a rainstorm. Second, the horizontal orientation and slim profile make it a surprisingly spacious but ultra-low-profile bag to carry around. It's big enough for a smartphone, wallet, and small camera, plus it comes with Peak Design's signature seatbelt-fabric-style strap, making it easy to sling around your body.

I was a fan of Savage Industries' EDC One bag , but even I had to admit it was a little too big and bulky for me. Then the EDC Two came out. This is essentially a smaller version of the original, which makes it much comfier to wear for long periods (even when it's filled to the brim with farmer's market produce). The top opens up like an old-timey doctor's bag, revealing the entire interior, so you never have to dig around for things. 

The lining of the black version of the bag is a gorgeous high-vis orange that makes it easy to spot any small items that might otherwise get lost in the shuffle. Its generous size and tough, utilitarian design make it a great pick for makers, or for anyone who needs a hybrid toolbox and shoulder bag.

For Artists

When I first saw this bag, I was skeptical. I've always had mixed feelings about vertically oriented messengers. They have a bad habit of banging against my hip when I walk and can be tough to cinch closer to my body. Waterfield's Muzetto crossbody shares the sturdy construction of its bigger sibling, but it has fewer internal pockets and the leather doesn't have as much give, so stuffing it with bulky objects, like full-sized headphones, can be awkward. The big weighty front flap secures seamlessly (and quietly) with a magnetic closure, and it flips over the back and rests securely against your body so you can walk around with it open. That's something I never thought I'd want to do, but reaching down to pluck out a camera, a sketchbook, or my phone makes it feel like an assistant is handing me the things I need.

Because it's vertically oriented, there's much less risk of your stuff spilling out onto the sidewalk if you crouch down to take a photo. It's the perfect bag to take to a museum for an afternoon, perfectly sized for a sketchbook and pencils, and the whisper-quiet magnetic closures make it super discreet. Nobody wants to open velcro in the reverential hush of a museum.

For Traveling Light

Made of simple, humble canvas, with just three pockets and a zippered pouch, this messenger bag is as straightforward as they come. It's inexpensive and lightweight, and it'll last you a really long time. I've had one since 2006, and while the color has faded a little, there are no holes or rips. Even with my stable of more expensive bags, I often pick this one up because it's not structured, and when carrying a light load it's pretty thin and light. It's not a good choice if you need something water-resistant though, as the canvas soaks up water like a sponge. 

For Stylish Travelers

Billingham bags have something of a reputation among photographers. These slick and stylish shoulder bags are renowned for their durability, understated style, and lifetime warranties. They aren't just for cameras though—they are excellent everyday totes if you're looking for a premium bag at a premium price. The Hadley 2020, in particular, is a perfect midsize bag that can fit a 15-inch laptop with ease, along with other essentials. A Teeny-Tiny Sling

The Bellroy Sling 7L is the first hands-free sling I've absolutely fallen in love with. It's big enough to carry some essentials (keys, masks, hand sanitizer, phone, wallet, and sunglasses) with room to spare, and because of its slim and flat profile, it doesn't feel bulky, no matter how much you pack in there. It sticks close to your body and swings around to the front with ease, making it a great choice for everyday use in a world of social distancing. What Is a Messenger Bag?

A messenger bag … well, it carries messages. It's the modern descendant of the rectangular satchels with crossbody straps used by early letter carriers and the back-slung bags used by modern bike messengers . That doesn't mean manufacturers are all going to agree on what constitutes a messenger-style bag. I've seen the terms “convertible tote,” “satchel,” and “laptop bag” all refer to the same style of bag. For our purposes, we're using “messenger bag” and “crossbody bag” to mean a bag that has at least one strap long enough to carry it over one shoulder or across your body. Generally, these bags rest on your hip.

What sets these bags apart from slings is that they are more like backpacks with a single strap. They sit very differently on the body.

There are even quite a few types of crossbodies to consider: there are traditional crossbody bags (think camera bags) and there are also sling bags and belt bags, which can each be worn in various ways. Whichever style you choose, the majority feature adjustable straps so you can customize your own personal, comfy fit.

Luckily, when we turned to our Travel + Leisure team and some additional frequent travelers for their favorite bags, the results were packed with crossbodies of all types. We recommended dozens of items we already own and travel with often, and we each rated our picks based on capacity, comfort, ease of use, portability, and value. The bags below are our favorites.

It’s extremely versatile and comfortable to wear.

Some may not think it’s the most stylish bag.

There are many reasons Baggu’s Medium Nylon Crescent Bag made the top spot on our list, but the biggest reason is its versatility. We have used this crossbody for everything from weekend trips and amusement park days to running errands and commuting. Beyond that, we can’t get over just how comfy it is to wear. The strap is pretty wide for a crossbody, which helps distribute the bag’s weight on our shoulder — plus the strap is adjustable, allowing the wearer to position it however they feel most comfortable. It’s also ultra-spacious, machine-washable, easy to pack into larger luggage , and significantly more durable than it initially feels. 

Inside its roomy main compartment, there are two pockets to neatly store smaller items like keys, cosmetics, cards, and cash. The top zipper is impressively smooth and we’ve never experienced it catching or snagging on anything in the several months we’ve been using it. We originally bought the Hammit Tony SML to take to concerts (yep — it’s stadium-approved), but its cute embellishments and versatile size have kept us reaching for it again and again over the last few months. We’ve taken it on everything from weeks-long international trips to weekend getaways and it comes in handy every time thanks to anti-theft features including slash-resistant mesh, a cut-proof strap, locking zippers, and a chair lock loop. We originally bought this bag to use on a weeklong trip out west, but we loved it so much, it has since become our everyday purse. It’s spacious, comfortable to carry, and easy to use thanks to its size and adjustable shoulder strap. It’s packed with both interior and exterior pockets as well as zipper and magnetic closures to keep everything inside secure. A wide opening in the main compartment even makes seeing and grabbing your items simple. We can’t get enough of the water-repellent nylon, which is helpful while at the pool or exploring new destinations in the rain. Perhaps best of all, though, is this bag is as stylish as it is functional — so you can pair it with any outfit and take it virtually anywhere.

After years of wear, it still never cuts into our shoulders — and it fits so much stuff.

The fabric fastener closure may not stay shut as well with repeated use.

This bag has been basically everywhere with us over the last few years: major vacations, road trips, flights, the mall, the park, and beyond. That’s partially because it’s so comfy to carry (the strap feels soft and broken-in on the first wear), but also because it fits so much inside. Designed with two vertical zip compartments and two smaller pockets, we felt like we had enough space for all our essentials and more — in fact, we used this while traveling with toddlers and were able to stow several of their items, too. The cotton canvas fabric feels soft against our back and shoulders and it appears to be high quality. In other words, we have a feeling this bag will withstand years of travel.

It’s pretty pricey for a belt bag.

We’ve carried this belt bag across our bodies, around our waist like a true fanny pack, and even as a clutch — and we’ve loved it every time. Whether traveling, hitting the gym, or heading to dinner with friends, the Senreve Belt Bag never feels out of place. It’s strappy and stylish like a purse, but it fits a bit more securely, like a fanny pack or sling bag. The microsuede interior feels luxurious and the magnetic flap closure offers a sense of security without adding bulk or taking away from the bag’s sharp appearance. There are only two pockets inside, but we felt that was plenty for the size, especially considering the spacious main compartment. It’s also scratch-, stain-, and water-resistant, so we feel comfortable getting a little rough with it, even in a lighter color. This bag comes in six different textures and colors ranging from chablis to merlot.

The strap is adjustable, the fabric is water-resistant, and the top zips closed to keep your belongings safe. It even comes with a removable RFID wristlet to keep your most important documents safe, or to use when you don’t need to carry a larger bag. If you’re into bags that are so compact they’re downright cute, you’ll love the Persia Crossbody by Tumi. It’s slim, sleek, and perfect for traveling with just the essentials. We love flying with it because it’s small enough to fit into a larger personal item as needed, but leaves the essentials close at hand mid-flight. And though it’s one of the smallest crossbodies on our list, it actually has an impressive number of pockets, so it’s still able to fit your keys, phone, wallet, AirPods, Kindle, makeup, and even snacks with room to spare. It even has a key leash; three card slots; and a wide, adjustable strap for added convenience. If you prefer to personalize the bag, you can do so with the monogramming feature.

It’s best for those who travel with just a few small items.

We’ve been using this purse for more than four years and it’s still finding ways to impress us. It’s not overly spacious, but it’s large enough to fit a few essential items and it’s the ideal size for trips ranging from international journeys to weekend getaways. Designed with one main compartment, two separate zip compartments, and a handful of other interior zip and slip pockets, you won’t find a crossbody of this size with better organization features. The detachable strap and touchably smooth leather are testaments to the bag’s high-quality construction, but our favorite thing about it might be the available colors: there are 21 color and leather options ranging from navy Saffiano leather to cognac cactus leather.

It’s roomier than it looks — and because it's Bottega Veneta, you know it's going to last.

It’s the most expensive item on our list by far.

Bottega Veneta’s chic little Small Loop Camera Bag may have snagged our best designer spot, but after using it for the past year, we think it’s the best bag for city exploration, too. We’ve used it in London for a weeklong trip, toted it around the towns of Spain, and have taken it with us pretty much everywhere in New York City. Despite its compact size and single compartment, it’s spacious enough to fit plenty of items like a small wallet, sunglasses, a phone, keys, cosmetics, and more. The woven leather design and gold hardware only up the luxurious feel, while an unstructured strap feels soft on the shoulder. We love this bag in classic black, but it’s also available in white, pink, and navy.

Kavu Sydney Satchel

It’s well-made, reasonably priced, and packed with pockets.

It’s not particularly fancy or fashion-forward.

The Kavu Sydney Satchel may be our value pick, but don’t let that deter you — there’s not much the bag can’t do. We’ve spent the last four or five years taking it pretty much everywhere, including various national parks, multi-week Europe trips, and nights out with friends. Because it’s made of extra-durable cotton, it holds up against unfavorable weather and rough travel. It’s on the larger side, so it’ll fit plenty of items including clothing, but it’s also rather slim, so it makes a great non-bulky travel bag. It’s the pockets, though, that keep us coming back to this crossbody: the oversized front pocket holds larger items like wallets, tablets, and other devices, while the main compartment boasts several smaller interior pockets for things like cards and cosmetics. To top it all off, the Sydney comes in 26 fun prints and colors.

Best for Parents

Canvelle sling bag.

It’s the most stylish sling bag we’ve ever seen, and it has space for both parents' items and their kids' stuff.

It’s a little pricey for a sling bag.

This is the daily bag we’ve been using for the past few years to carry our stuff and our kids’ stuff — without sacrificing style. While it’s not quite the size of a full-fledged baby bag, it does have the space for a change of clothes, some snacks, a full-size wallet, sunglasses, sunscreen, and other everyday essentials. Because it has a wide, super comfy strap and boasts high-end construction, it makes an excellent personal item when flying. It even has a cushioned back panel, a water-resistant lining, water-resistant back pockets, and a key clip. After using it for a couple of years, we think it feels like an oversized belt bag that can be worn across the body.

Other Crossbodies We Liked

A few other crossbody bags almost made our list, but were ultimately cut due to minor issues we experienced while using them.

Athleta All About Crossbody : This crossbody is quite durable and comfy, and we like it enough that we’ve used it pretty consistently over the last few months. It’s just a bit too small to use as a travel bag or even as a commuter bag. 

Lo & Sons Waverley 2 : This bag is made for travel and it’s come along with us everywhere from Cancun to Paris. It’s super slim yet packed with pockets, so it’s a packing dream, but we noticed that after a few years of use, there’s some discoloration on the leather.

It can be tempting to go for the most visually appealing crossbody bag you can find, but keep in mind crossbodies are small by nature and if you can’t fit all your daily items inside, you’ll just end up frustrated on your travels. You may even find yourself wanting to buy a new bag once you arrive at your destination. That said, it’s wise to prioritize size over everything else when shopping for a crossbody.

Look for padded, adjustable straps

Crossbody straps are often thinner than those on totes and backpacks, so if your bag is stuffed to the brim, that thin strap may dig into your shoulder. To avoid discomfort in your shoulder or any body part the bag may repeatedly rub against, consider crossbodies with padded, adjustable straps. 

Prioritize built-in organization and safety features

Depending on what you plan on traveling with, it’s a good idea to shop for crossbodies that have plenty of pockets as well as safety features such as zip tops or both zips and snaps for double protection. Multiple pockets mean there’s a spot for everything, making it easier to locate things inside the purse. Meanwhile, safety features like locking zippers, slash-resistant straps, and RFID-blocking technology help prevent pickpockets and hackers from getting their hands on your most precious items.

Standard crossbodies can be worn over the shoulder or, as the name suggests, across the body. More specific crossbodies like belt bags and sling bags can be worn across the chest or back or even around the waist — fanny pack-style.

When worn correctly, it’s harder for crossbodies to slip off your shoulder or be stolen than totes and handbags. Crossbodies also allow shoppers to go hands-free, which is helpful on challenging hikes, cycling adventures, and when there’s other luggage to carry.

Typically, airlines only allow travelers to bring two items into the cabin with them: a carry-on — which is usually stowed in the overhead bins — and a smaller personal item that must fit under the seat in front of you. Most crossbody bags are small enough to be considered a personal item (18 x 14 x 8 inches) and some larger ones count as carry-ons (22 x 14 x 9 inches). But if you’re hoping to bring a crossbody into the cabin in addition to another personal item and carry-on, TSA will likely ask you to pack your crossbody into another piece of luggage or leave it at the airport altogether. Something smaller and more compact, like a phone purse , might work better since it can be stashed in a carry-on or personal item easily if necessary.

So to help you choose, it’s useful to think about where you’ll be using the bag.

Do you need it for work purposes? If so, is your work environment smart-casual or formal? In these cases, understated colorways like black, gray, navy, or tan will blend in better (no matter how much you may be digging that blazing orange, it’s best saved for after-work hours). Clean silhouettes or soft draping designs will also be easier to fit in formal environments than “busy” designs that draw the eye (but not for the right reasons). Size and weight

The bigger the bag is, the more bulk you’ll be carrying around. Ask yourself if the added space is worth the increased weight and bulk penalty. Maybe you need it or really value the ability to accommodate a variety of loads from one day to the next. But if you tend to carry a set amount of gear, picking a bag that’s just big enough without adding unnecessary weight may be a better option.

For example, are messenger bags good for laptops? Some are much better suited to tech carry than others and will be sized accordingly to fit different devices. They may also have additional features such as padded sleeves that add to the bulk. Potentially increased size and bulk is a worthy trade-off if you regularly carry a laptop but unnecessary if you don’t.

So you’ve got a bag that’s the right size and suits your style, but how about getting to your gear? One of the key advantages of messengers and shoulder bags over other types of carry is the on-body access they provide. The ability to easily swing them round to your front to get to frequently used essentials or to access gear from the main compartment without having to remove the bag from your shoulder. Features such as quick-release shoulder straps, exterior pockets, magnetic or one-handed flap buckles, and multiple access points to the main compartment will help you get to gear in a jiffy.

Are you going to be putting your bag through the wringer on regular cycle commutes ? Shoving it in and out of overhead compartments or heading off into the wilderness for a day of exploring trails or outdoor photography? The more demanding you are on your bag, the tougher it will need to be. My favorite messenger bag is the canvas and leather book bag made by Rough & Tumble a small shop in Maine. I’ve had it more than 7 years and it’s still like new. It lays flat against my body. It has a myriad of compartments that are functional for my iPad, paperwork, pouches, lunch, umbrella, jacket, hat, sweater, and toiletries. For me, the best messenger bag (also referred to as a crossbody bag, sling bag, courier bag or man bag) is the perfect way to carry my personal belongings while sightseeing and travelling, and for everyday use.

I was recently in the market for a new crossbody bag for my travels as my current one had so much use a zip broke. It had accompanied me for the past few years on my travels and every day life and I was sad to say goodbye to it. And because I am a convert to this style of travel bag, because it fits all my stuff in it that I need for the day, I of course bought a similar one.

If you are in the market for one of the best travel messenger bags for travel, then you are in the right place. In this article I share all my research for the current best crossbody bags for travel. I also take a closer look at their various features and provide a number of reasons why these bags are so great for travel and every day use. First of all, what are messenger bags (or sling bags and crossbody bags) and why do I recommend you use one instead of your usual handbag or small backpack when you travel? So, messenger bags are bags with a single shoulder strap. They have been designed to be worn across the front of your body, hence the name crossbody bags. These bags come in a variety of sizes, shapes, designs and colours. And, they hold everything (well most things) you need for a day of sightseeing, travelling or everyday life.

For me, the best messenger bag for travel is one that can fit my purse, passport, mobile, sunglasses and various other travel accessories. And I know, it keeps all of these items together and safe.

• The best messenger bags for travel will have room to fit all my things in while sightseeing and travelling. Even be taken to work in the office on a working holiday ;
• The best crossbody bags for travel have been designed with multiple compartments to keep all my items well organised and safe;

I’ve briefly given you the reasons above, but expand on these reasons to choose a messenger bag following. Consider these reasons for what to look for in a crossbody bag for travel. They will help you choose the right messenger bag.

Size is the first thing to consider when choosing a messenger bag for travel. They need to be the right size to fit in all your items. So take a moment to think of what you want to carry in your bag. Messenger bags are just the right size and enable me to fit in all the things I need to carry around while travelling. My phone, my power bank, my travel wallet and/or purse, my lip balm, small bottle of perfume, my passport, tissues, sunglasses, etc. Everything fits in – it’s amazing. Some sling bags are big enough to hold a small iPad or laptop but I wouldn’t go much bigger than that. So consider the size of a messenger bag before you purchase one so it fits all you intended belongings in it.

2. Adjustable Strap for Comfort

The second thing to consider when choosing a cross body bag is if they are adjustable. Messenger bags have adjustable straps making them extremely comfortable bags to wear. With an adjustable shoulder strap that I can adjust myself, believe me, being able to do this has helped with comfort. Sometimes I have the strap long. Other times I have it short – it depends on what I am doing. And a lot of the time I do not know I am wearing the bag because it is so comfortable to wear.

I had never considered this before about a bag, but being able to adjust the strap to fit my body makes me feel safe and secure knowing that my valuables are close to me. Sometimes I wear my messenger bag under a jacket and which makes it harder for would be thieves to steal. Mostly, I wear it across my body like it should be warn and no one can pull it off me. No matter if I am sitting or standing it is by my side keeping my things safe and secure.

Other safety and security things messenger bags have include RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) protection. RFID provides protection by blocking radio waves from RFID scanners. As a messenger bag hangs in front of the body, you keep your hands free. This can help with your safety and the safety of your things in your bag. Meaning you can use your hands for other things. To carry your shopping, to hold a drink or food, or to use both hands to do something with. Hopefully that isn’t to defend yourself from a suspected burglar or attacker! And as the bag is in front of you, you can put your hands on it anytime. And when you have your backpack or dragging a suitcase , being hands free can come in handy.

5. Don’t get caught out carrying other people’s things

When I first went travelling I did a coach tour and that tour company advised to bring x, y and z with me. And guess what? I did. However, after a couple of days my shoulders and back ached from carrying loads of stuff, but I still continued to carry this stuff in my large bag. Then, people on the tour started asking me to hold things in my bag for them like their jumper, or camera, or water bottle because they didn’t want to carry a bag. I thought I would do the kind thing and carry their stuff for them. Soon, I felt like a ‘pack horse’ and decided very quickly to downsize. Now I don’t get lumbered with other people’s things with a messenger bag. And I have suggested to many fellow travellers about the reasons to get their own messenger bag for travel and every day use.

6. Fashionable – you don’t look like a tourist

My messenger bag is very fashionable – well I think so! And I know I am not alone because I have seen loads of other people wearing one too. What I like is the fact it doesn’t make me look like a tourist or a traveller unlike some other bags such as a daypack can. It just fits in to my travelling lifestyle however, if I was hiking I would probably choose something a little bigger so it can fit a water bottle and food in.

Most messenger bags are made from lightweight and durable materials. I love this aspect of crossbody bags as even though the materials they are made from, cotton, leather and suede also means the travel bag is durable and strong enough to hold all my items. Another aspect to consider before buying a messenger bag for travel is that the material it is made of is waterproof. Waterproofing will help to keep your stuff dry, and you just never know when you will be caught in the rain while travelling.

Cons of Owning a Messenger Bag for Travel

As with everything, there are pros and cons. I’ve gone over the pros of messenger bags for travel, now it is time for some cons of messenger bags for travel. The only 2 things I can come up with are:

• the messenger bag may not fit everything you need in it. This would suggest that you need to buy a bigger one!
• you might find the straps uncomfortable.

A mysterious signal recorded by an Ohio State University astronomer in 1977 is getting a fictional explanation thanks to " 3 Body Problem ."

The Wow! signal is a plot point in the Netflix sci-fi series starring Jess Hong, Benedict Wong, Liam Cunningham and Eiza González, among others. Here's how. ( And beware of spoilers! )

What is the Wow! signal?

The Wow! signal was detected by Ohio State’s Radio Observatory (known as the “Big Ear” telescope), which scanned for alien radio signals from 1973-95, according to the university . The 22-year search is the longest-running Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project in history.

On Aug. 15, 1977, the telescope picked up a mysterious signal originating near the Sagittarius constellation. Volunteer astronomer Jerry Ehman, surprised by the numbers he saw on a computer readout detailing the intensity of the signal, wrote “Wow!” next to the finding, coining its name. To this day, the Wow! signal remains the strongest candidate for an alien radio transmission ever detected, according to OSU.

After the Wow! signal was detected, scientists used radio telescopes with more sensitivity than the Big Ear to try to locate it again, but nothing was found.

How the Wow! signal is used in '3 Body Problem'

The series, adapted from a novel by Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin, tells of a "fateful decision" made in 1960s China that "reverberates in the present, where a group of scientists partners with a detective to confront an existential planetary threat," according to its IMDb description .

In the series, the Wow! signal is a real message from intelligent aliens beyond Earth, according to Space.com . A Chinese astrophysicist responds by inviting the aliens to Earth — to humanity's detriment. In the series, the signal is covered up as a false alarm unique to the Ohio State University discovery.

What makes the Wow! signal so special?

According to Ohio State in a 2018 release , researchers have hypothesized that aliens would choose to communicate at a frequency near the one emitted by hydrogen, since it is the most common element in the universe. The Wow! signal occurred at almost exactly this expected frequency and was about 30 times more intense than the surrounding noise level.

“Over the years, people have considered different theories,” said Molly Gallagher, a graduate research associate in the Department of Astronomy, in the statement. “It’s not a comet. There weren’t any planets in that area at the time; there were not any known asteroids in that area that could have reflected light. … So, it sticks around in popular culture and in the scientific mind because it hasn’t been explained.”

What are some real-world theories about the Wow! signal?

So, if it wasn't aliens, what caused the Wow! signal?

In 2017, an EarthSky article suggested it was a comet.

At the time,  Antonio Paris  -- an adjunct professor of astronomy at St. Petersburg College, Florida, and ex-analyst of the U.S. Department of Defense -- and his team had new evidence two comets,  266P/Christensen  and  P/2008 Y2 (Gibbs) , were passing through the part of the sky the Big Ear Radio Observatory was surveying in 1977, when the Wow! signal was noticed.

They believe the signal came from a hydrogen cloud accompanying one of the comets. This idea would explain why the Wow! signal was not measured again: the comet that caused it moved on in its orbit.

According to Astronomy.com , we may never know.

“Was that E.T. or was it not E.T.? Nobody knows,” Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the SETI Institute, tells Astronomy. “Nobody has ever found another explanation for what that might have been. It’s like you hear chains rattling in your attic and you think ‘My god, ghosts are real.’ But then you never hear them again, so what do you think?”

Authorities recover fourth body from Key Bridge wreckage in Baltimore

Authorities announced a fourth body has been recovered from the site of the deadly Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore last month.

Salvage crews discovered what they believed to be a missing construction vehicle Sunday and alerted the Maryland State Police, the  Key Bridge Response Unified Command  said in a statement. State police, the FBI and the Maryland Transportation Authority Police responded and found the victim trapped inside the vehicle.

The victim was taken to the medical examiner's office and identified on Monday, officials said. The name of the victim was not immediately released at the request of the family.

"As we mourn the lives lost and continue the recovery operation, we recognize each missing individual is someone’s beloved friend or family member," Col. Roland L. Butler Jr., superintendent of the Maryland State Police, said in a statement Monday. "Along with all of our allied law enforcement partners, we pledge to exhaust the physical and technical aspects of their training while deploying every available resource possible."

Authorities have been working to recover the bodies of the  six construction workers who died in the collapse on March 26. Eight workers were fixing potholes on the bridge when the container ship Dali struck it, collapsing it into the Patapsco River.

Rescuers pulled out two workers, but the six were presumed dead after an hourslong search. Crews recovered two bodies a day after the collapse, and a third body was found April 5.

The three bodies were identified as those of Maynor Suazo Sandoval, 38, Dorlian Castillo Cabrera, 26, and Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, according to authorities.

Zefir – is the unique dessert very popular in Russia, but almost unknown in other countries. Unlike many other desserts it is light and healthy. Many Russians who live abroad miss for rye bread , buckwheat and zefir.

Zefir is made of apples, sugar and egg white. This mix will not be a solid, so the next substance should be added – it is a hardener. Usually it is pectin or agar.

The result has white or beige color and delicious sweet taste. To tell the truth, the white color is not natural. Fully natural zefir should be beige. If you found snowy white zefir in a supermarket, then you should know it contains artificial food dye.

Zefir is a light dish, and the name given for this dessert is the name of the Greek god. According to the legend, this god was extremely quick; he acted as the messenger for the gods. Zefir is soft, its hardness similar to souffle. It melts in your mouth.

History of zefir

In Russia in the old times there was the dessert made of applesauce and honey. Unfortunately, we don`t know its exact name. In the 15th century the confectioners from the Russian town of Kolomna added an egg white and invented the dessert that was very look like modern zefir.

Unfortunately, we never saw zefir in restaurants. In the best case a restaurant will offer you the factory made zefir; but it is not interesting because you may visit a supermarket by yourself.

Brand number 1 of zefir

We told already, that at first time modern zefir appeared in the Soviet Union. It has happened in Moscow, and the first food factory produced this dessert was “Udarnica”. Since 1929 this factory is the leader of quality and taste. Its name has become one of the best brands in the Soviet Union and now it is popular in Russia.

“Udarnica” factory is located in Moscow at Shabolovka street. It is near Shabolovskaya subway station. Near the factory you can find a company store with fresh zefir, pastila and candied fruit jelly. If you have some time, you may visit it. Exact address: Moscow, Shabolovka street, 13.

Russians are proud of this brand. This factory was not sold to foreign companies. We can surely call this brand as "Russian national". Such situation is rare. For example, most of the popular brands of Russian national beverage kvass are owned by PepsiCo and Coca-Cola.

Even most of those foreigners who know Russian language cannot translate the word “Udarnica” to English. It is not easy, but we will try. The direct translation is “a striking woman”, but this translation is not correct. To understand the right meaning, we need to remember the history of Russia.

In the Soviet Union many of Russian people believed in communism. Many people worked hard for “light future”. Most active workers who struck records of productivity were called “udarnik” and “udarnica”. Udarnica – is a woman, who strikes records in labor. This translation is correct.

We told above this food plant was found in 1929. It was the time of starting the construction of “a new communist future” and all new factories received such names.

The “Udarnica” factory already broke all records. The half of all candied fruit jelly and zefir eaten in Russia is produced by this factory. 50% of the market is the magnificent result.

If to read the composition of zefir that produced by different factories, then it is clear that “Udarnica” is the most natural and healthy zefir . Of course, we recommend purchasing of zefir with this brand. It is better quality, better ingredients, and the price is not high.

What we can say about other brands? We advise not to take the risk.

For example, let's see the package in the photo on the right. This zefir produced by “Petrovsky” food factory in Saint-Petersburg. We can see the word “Premium”. The package shows us this product is high quality.

In fact, if to watch for the composition of this zefir, you will find artificial dye, cocoa butter substitute, artificial flavoring, sodium lactate and more. It is a large question: “Petrovsky” is a food factory or maybe it is a chemical factory?

Health benefits of zefir

Zefir is healthy. The Russian Academy of Medical Sciences officially advises it as a food for children. Of course, you should not eat much. The recommendation of scientists: not more than 50 grams in one day.

Zefir contain 0 fats. Also, it contains “fast carbohydrates” and useful for fast energy recovery. “Fast carbohydrates” helps a brain to work better.

Zefir usually includes pectin. This natural substance is able to remove toxic elements from human's body. Pectin is able to decrease cholesterol level and increases natural immunity. DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche will be without forward Jonathan Drouin for their first-round playoff series against Winnipeg due to a lower-body injury.

Drouin got hurt when he tripped in the second period Thursday against Edmonton. He skated off and didn’t return.

The Avalanche practiced Saturday morning before leaving for Winnipeg. Game 1 of the series is Sunday.

The 29-year-old Drouin turned in a career season with 56 points (19 goals, 37 assists) after signing with Colorado as a free agent over the summer.

Drouin was typically on the same line as Mikko Rantanen and his good friend Nathan MacKinnon, who had a career-best 140 points this season.

“Super unfortunate. I feel really bad for him,” MacKinnon said. “I know he’s crushed right now. He’s been building all season for this. We can’t replace him.

“Obviously, it sucks for the team, but for him as a person, it’s just so sad. Hopefully we get him back sooner than later.”

The third overall pick by Tampa Bay in 2013, Drouin has played in 564 career regular-season games, with 96 goals.

“That’s a tough one for us,” forward Zach Parise said. “He’s had a great season. He’s had some really good chemistry with those guys on the 5-on-5 and on the power play. We have to as a group pick up the slack.”

Parise was on a line with MacKinnon and Rantanen for Saturday’s practice. Coach Jared Bednar declined to confirm if the lines on the ice were an indicator of how the lineup might be against the Jets.

“I’m not going to give you that,” Bednar said.

Defenseman Devon Toews missed practice to be with his wife, who gave birth to a baby boy Friday. The family was bringing the baby home from the hospital, but he was expected to join the team for the flight.

Fellow defenseman Samuel Girard skated with the team as he progresses through concussion protocol. Bednar said he didn’t have an answer yet if Girard would play Sunday.

Girard left in the first period of last Saturday’s 7-0 loss to Winnipeg following a collision with teammate Ross Colton.

Captain Gabriel Landeskog joined the team on the ice and meandered around chatting with teammates. Bednar recently said Landeskog wasn’t close to being a full participant in practice. The 31-year-old Landeskog had cartilage replacement surgery on his right knee last May and is missing a second straight season .

Colorado called up defenseman Brad Hunt, forward Chris Wagner and goaltender Arvid Holm on Saturday from the Colorado Eagles of the American Hockey League.
