Homeworking companies have mushroomed in recent years, which is great news in terms of choice but does mean you have to weigh up the pros and cons of the different offerings. Here’s a helping hand if you’re tempted to break into the sector but are unsure where to start researching.  

BRILLIANT TRAVEL  

Part of Barrhead Travel, one of the UK’s largest independent travel groups, Brilliant Travel homeworkers pay a monthly fee of £65, receive access to Barrhead’s own products and have the freedom to book what they want. DESIGNER TRAVEL  

Founded in 2008 and part of the Hays Travel Independence Group, it now has 125 associates. Monthly fee is £50 and commission levels can reach 80%. New entrants to travel considered.

Homeworkers can receive 50% commission upfront and have the flexibility to use Blue Bay's leads if they need an extra boost while building their business. No joining fee; monthly admin fee of £49 if homeworker uses own equipment and £99 with full hardware and software support.

Silver Travel Advisor is a review, information and travel advice service for over-50s, which added a homeworking agency in January 2022. A) COLLECTION OF PERSONAL INFORMATION

We may collect different types of Personal Data: “Technical Information” and “Personal Information.” Your Personal Information, and that of your travel companions, is provided to us either directly by you or through an employer or travel sponsor (as the case may be), in order to provide you with the Services you have requested and typically consists of your full legal name, email address, mailing address, telephone number and credit card number or other payment information. We may also collect other Personal Information in order to assist you with your travel plans, including but not limited to, passport number, driver’s license or other government-issued identification number, date of birth, gender, arrival and departure locations and times, airline, hotel or car rental frequent loyalty numbers, known traveler and global entry number, and other related travel information.

We may also collect information about your location when you use certain of our services, particularly certain apps.  Such apps collect location data to display the real-time risk alerts and personalized assistance notification features, even when the app is closed and not in use. The types of location data we collect depend in part on your device and account settings. You can change this later by going to the device settings.

B) COLLECTION OF TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Information We Collect Through Automatic Data Collection Technologies

We collect other information “Technical Information”, such as your IP address, search terms, and site pages you visit while on our Site, whenever you visit our Site, use our services, or view our online advertisements. The technologies we use for this automatic data collection may include cookies and log data.

Whenever you use a website, mobile application, or other internet service, certain information is created and retained by the website or application. This happens with our Site as well. We collect Technical Information when you use our Site, or information that has been made anonymous, such as:

We collect and analyze this Technical Information to measure the number of visitors to the different sections of our Site, to evaluate how visitors use our Site and to provide you with advertisements that are relevant and useful to you, unless you have told us not to. If you are a prospective customer, the Personal Information we collect and use is necessary for our legitimate interest in providing you with information about the services we offer, and about which you have expressed an interest or that we believe will be of benefit to you. Where appropriate, we will obtain your consent at the time we communicate with you.

In some cases, our purpose for collecting the information is because you have expressly consented to our collection and use of your Personal Information.

We collect your Personal Information for a variety of reasons. You may provide the information to us directly, or through a tool or product provided by us or another company to your employer (in the case of our business clients). We collect your Personal Information, such as name, address, email address, phone number, and credit card information in order to provide the services you have requested. From travel customers, we may also request information such as your passport and known traveler information, vendor loyalty programs, and other information as deemed necessary by the service provider to fulfill your request, to permit us to provide other ancillary travel services to you and to manage your travel experience.; and

We use the Personal Information we have collected to allow us to evaluate your employment application, to provide the products and services you have chosen, process payments, or to manage and develop our business and operations, including:

Establishing, managing and terminating business relations with you;

Reviewing the products and services that we provide to you;

If you send us an email with questions or comments, we may use your email address to respond to your questions or comments, and we may save your questions or comments for future reference. We may email you when:

You have applied for employment with us;

You request information about or from us;

It relates to purchases you have made from us (e.g., product updates, customer support, etc.);

You consented to being contacted by email for a particular purpose;

We are sending you information about our other products and services, offers, promotions and our newsletters, if this is in accordance with your marketing preferences. However, you will always be able to opt-out of such communications at any time (See the “Your Choices About the Use of Your Personal Information” section below).

3. PREFERENCE-BASED ADVERTISING, ANALYTICS AND SERVICES

We do not currently share your information that we collect for preference-based advertising purposes and we do not currently have any plans to do so through this Site.

If we do in the future work with third parties for preference-based advertising, then we will do so in accordance with this section and you can opt-out as explained below. Such third parties may include third party advertising networks and website analysis firms who use cookies and web beacons to collect non-personally identifiable information when you visit our Site and third-party sites. The information collected through cookies and/or web beacons, including your IP address, web browser, pages viewed, time spent on pages, and links clicked, is often used by these advertising networks to serve you with advertisements, while you are on our Site and/or on third party sites, that better reflect your preferences and needs. We also share your Personal Information as necessary with airlines, hotels and other providers for whose services you have requested our assistance. A) THIRD PARTY PROVIDERS

We may use third parties to assist in processing your employment applications, fulfilling your service requests, or providing other important information to you. We require all such service providers to act in compliance with this Privacy Policy. We may also share your Personal Information with third parties, including our affiliates, or with employees, agents, consultants and other parties who require the information to assist us to establish, maintain and manage our business relationship with you. Further, we may share your Personal Information with our partners and affiliates to promote other services to you that you might like or to show you ads in which you might be interested.

B) EMAIL COMMUNICATIONS

We may share your email contact information with our partners to assist with marketing our products and services. You may unsubscribe from receiving future commercial email communications from us by clicking the “unsubscribe” link included at the bottom of any marketing emails we send, or by contacting us  here . However, we reserve the right to send you transactional emails such as customer service communications in connection with the products or services you have purchased. For security reasons, we do not recommend that you send Personal Information, such as passwords, social security numbers, or bank account information, to us by email.

C) TRANSFER OF ASSETS

We do not sell or lease Personal Information or provide a list of our customers to third parties. However, as we continue to develop our business, we may sell or purchase assets. If another entity acquires us or all (or substantially all) of our assets, the information we have about you will be transferred to and used by this acquiring entity. Also, if any bankruptcy or reorganization proceeding is brought by or against us, all such information may be considered an asset of ours and as such may be sold or transferred to third parties.

A) ACCURACY OF PERSONAL INFORMATION

It is important that the Personal Information we hold about you is accurate and current. We require you to keep us informed of changes to your Personal Information. If your registration information changes, please contact us  here . We take reasonable steps to verify your identity prior to honoring any such requests to help protect your privacy and security.

B) ACCESSING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

If you want to know what Personal Information we hold about you or wish to change Personal Information that is inaccurate or out of date, or to withdraw your consent to our use of your Personal Information, please contact us  here . It may not always be possible to completely remove or modify information in our databases, although we will make reasonable efforts to do so upon your request. We do not control how our partners retain, store and destroy data they have accessed in connection with assisting with providing our services. C) DO NOT TRACK DISCLOSURES

Certain browsers may offer you the option of providing notice to websites that you do not wish for your online activities to be tracked for preference-based advertising purposes (“DNT Notice”). Some browsers are, by default, set to provide a DNT Notice, whether or not that reflects your preference. Some Personal Information included in this category may overlap with other categories.

C. Protected classification characteristics under California or federal law.

Age (40 years or older), race, color, ancestry, national origin, citizenship, religion or creed, marital status, medical condition, physical or mental disability, sex (including gender, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy or childbirth and related medical conditions), sexual orientation, veteran or military status, genetic information (including familial genetic information).

D. Commercial information.

Records of personal property, products or services purchased, obtained, or considered, or other purchasing or consuming histories or tendencies.

E. Biominfo rmationetric.

Genetic, physiological, behavioral, and biological characteristics, or activity patterns used to extract a template or other identifier or identifying information, such as, fingerprints, faceprints, and voiceprints, iris or retina scans, keystroke, gait, or other physical patterns, and sleep, health, or exercise data.

F. Internet or other similar network activity.

Browsing history, search history, information on a consumer’s interaction with a website, application, or advertisement.

G. Geolocation data.

Physical location or movements.

H. Sensory data.

Audio, electronic, visual, thermal, olfactory, or similar information.

I. Professional or employment-related information.

Current or past job history or performance evaluations.

J. Non-public education information (per the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (20 U.S.C. Section 1232g, 34 C.F.R. Part 99)).

Education records directly related to a student maintained by an educational institution or party acting on its behalf, such as grades, transcripts, class lists, student schedules, student identification codes, student financial information, or student disciplinary records.

K. Inferences drawn from other Personal Information.

Profile reflecting a person’s preferences, characteristics, psychological trends, predispositions, behavior, attitudes, intelligence, abilities, and aptitudes.

Personal Information does not include:

Publicly available information from government records.

De-identified or aggregated consumer information.

Information excluded from the CCPA’s scope, like:

health or medical information covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and the California Confidentiality of Medical Information Act (CMIA) or clinical trial data;

personal information covered by certain sector-specific privacy laws, including the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FRCA), the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) or California Financial Information Privacy Act (FIPA), and the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act of 1994.

We obtain the categories of Personal Information listed above from the following categories of sources:

Directly from our clients. For example, from documents that our clients provide to us related to the Services for which they engage us.

Indirectly from our clients. For example, through information we collect from our clients in the course of providing Services to them.

Directly and indirectly from activity on our Site and the Sites of Travel Leaders Group’s brand companies. For example, from submissions through our website portal or website usage details collected automatically.

From third parties that interact with us in connection with the Services we perform. For example, from third party travel suppliers.

B) USE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION

We may use or disclose the Personal Information we collect for one or more of the following business purposes:

To fulfill or meet the reason for which the information is provided. For example, if you provide us with Personal Information for us to book travel, we will use that Personal Information to make travel arrangements and provide it to any third-party supplier (hotel, airline, car rental company etc.).

To provide you with information, products or services that you request from us.

To provide you with email alerts, event registrations, offers and other notices concerning our products or services, or events or news, that may be of interest to you.

To carry out our obligations and enforce our rights arising from any contracts entered into between you and us, including for billing and collections.

To improve our Site and present its contents to you.

For testing, research, analysis and product development.

As necessary or appropriate to protect the rights, property or safety of us, our clients or others.

To respond to law enforcement requests and as required by applicable law, court order, or governmental regulations.

As described to you when collecting your Personal Information or as otherwise set forth in the CCPA.

We will not collect additional categories of Personal Information or use the Personal Information we collected for materially different, unrelated, or incompatible purposes without providing you notice.

C) SHARING PERSONAL INFORMATION

We may disclose your Personal Information to a third party for a business purpose.  When we disclose Personal Information for a business purpose, we enter a contract that describes the purpose and requires the recipient to both keep that Personal Information confidential and not use it for any purpose except performing the contract.

In the preceding twelve (12) months, we have disclosed the following categories of Personal Information for a business purpose:

Category A:             Identifiers. Category B:             California Customer Records personal information categories. Category C:             Protected classification characteristics under California or federal law. Category I:              Professional or employment-related information.

We disclose your Personal Information for a business purpose to the following categories of third parties:

D) YOUR RIGHTS AND CHOICES

1. Access to Specific Information and Data Portability Rights

You have the right to request that we disclose certain information to you about our collection and use of your Personal Information over the past 12 months. Once we receive and confirm your verifiable consumer request, we will disclose to you:

The categories of sources for the Personal Information we collected about you.

Our business or commercial purpose for collecting or selling that Personal Information.

2. Deletion Request Rights

You have the right to request that we delete any of your Personal Information that we collected from you and retained, subject to certain exceptions. Once we receive and confirm your verifiable consumer request, we will delete (and direct our service providers to delete) your Personal Information from our records, unless an exception applies.

Enable solely internal uses that are reasonably aligned with consumer expectations based on your relationship with us.

Comply with a legal obligation.

Make other internal and lawful uses of that information that are compatible with the context in which you provided it.

3. Exercising Access, Data Portability, and Deletion Rights

To exercise the access, data portability, and deletion rights described above, please submit a verifiable consumer request to us  here .

Only you or a person registered with the California Secretary of State that you authorize to act on your behalf, may make a verifiable consumer request related to your Personal Information. You may also make a verifiable consumer request on behalf of your minor child.

You may only make a verifiable consumer request for access or data portability twice within a 12-month period. The verifiable consumer request must:

Provide sufficient information that allows us to reasonably verify you are the person about whom we collected Personal Information or an authorized representative.

Describe your request with sufficient detail that allows us to properly understand, evaluate, and respond to it.

We cannot respond to your request or provide you with Personal Information if we cannot verify your identity or authority to make the request and confirm the Personal Information relates to you.  Making a verifiable consumer request does not require you to create an account with us.  We will only use Personal Information provided in a verifiable consumer request to verify the requestor’s identity or authority to make the request.

This Privacy Notice applies to our processing of personal data of UK and EU residents that is covered by the EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) and is a supplement to our Privacy Policy.

Locals in one of 'UK's most rundown seaside towns' hit back at criticisms

Cleethorpes has been named one of the UK's worst seaside towns but according to locals the reputation isn't deserved - and they argue it's actually full of brilliant shops and a great beach

Residents of a seaside town condemned as one of the worst in the country have explained why it's secretly "a great place to live".

Cleethorpes was recently judged to be the six worst coastal destination by the Telegraph , only losing out on the dubious top spot by the likes of nearby Morecambe and Skegness, and Rhyl in North Wales.

Many of those who live in the Lincolnshire settlement of around 40,000 argue that the beautifully wistful air that is afforded the place by the Humber estuary nearby confuses visitors into wrongly believing the place is bleak.

One of those people is Jo Aitchison, who was born in Cleethorpes and returned to the area after university. "The beach is beautiful, there is a lot of countryside, and lots of great cafes. My friends from London always comment on how many dogs there are," Jo told the Mirror.

"There are two sections of the beach in my mind, the fish and chip shop bit with the arcade and pier, where there are donkeys. Further up is St Anthony's Bank, which is more natural. You can walk your dog there. It is natural and rugged, and you can do paddle boarding there. It is my favourite place in the world. It is where I got engaged. It was sunrise, we got there first thing in the morning. It was really quiet, dog walkers were just coming out."

The PR manager for Pace Comms also argues that the town and its bargain £160,000 average house price is the perfect place not just for a day out at the seaside, but for young families looking to get onto the property ladder.

"It is such a great place to live around here. One of the biggest reasons is that young people can afford to get on the property ladder. It is a more affordable way of life," Jo added. Not only are house prices low, the natural riches of the town and its cheap chippies and pubs mean living there is far more affordable than other parts of the country. The average pint of a pint is around £1 lower than the national average.

A slower, more traditional pace of life is at work in Cleethorpes, where queues to get into the chippies form on a Friday evening. Jo tips Steels as her favourite, due to the experience of dining with a cup of tea and a thick slice of bread beneath the net curtains.

"There are lots of great pubs which you can walk between. Willy's is a very popular pub and Message in a Bottle sells independent beers, which you can take away or you can drink in. They are all locally owned."

While UK seaside towns can feel a little rundown or as if they are receding further and further from their glory days of the Victorian era, Jo argues that Cleethorpes has a sense of being on the up. If ONS reported wellbeing figures are to be believed, people in the broader North East Lincolnshire area in which it lies are generally happier, less anxious and more satisfied with life than the average Brit.

"We have a lot of renewable energy businesses which have come here recently. There is a really optimistic and hopeful feel to the place. It feels like Cleethorpes has been on the up for a while. There are lots of great independent shops," Jo continued.

"We have big events like Armed Forces Day and scooter rallies. There is a really hopeful air in the place. There is a very quirky area, called Fitties where there are holiday chalets and beach huts. Some are made of wood, pebble dash, and glass. Lots of people come and stay during their visits."

Jo is not alone in her defence of the town. Elaine Stones said: "Cleethorpes has its problems, but I love it, it's home and I would move back if I could. Perhaps its charm is the fact it's not drastically commercialised. It's easy to not always appreciate what you have on your doorstep. There are far worse places to live."

Jason Cutler added. "I think Cleethorpes is ace. I'm not a local to Grimsby and Cleethorpes but I went a lot of times with my late partner whose family all hailed from that area and I saw nothing to dislike at all. Very Veteran friendly there as well."
