âBruce Power summer bus tours to begin June 2
After welcoming thousands of people to the visitors’ centre last year, following a two-year COVID-19 pandemic hiatus, Bruce Power has announced that the public is welcome to take part in its Summer Bus Tour Program, commencing June 2. Tours begin at the visitors’ centre, at 3394 Bruce County Road 20, northwest of Tiverton, where participants will have the opportunity to watch a short film and interact with displays about the nuclear electricity process, the production of cancer-fighting medical isotopes, refurbishment projects, the company’s commitment to safety and the environment, as well as the changes to the site as it progresses with its Life-Extension Program. After a security check of each person’s government-issued photo ID (for individuals over the age of 18), visitors will continue to learn about clean and reliable nuclear energy by boarding a bus and taking a one-hour, narrated tour of the 2,300-acre site. “Inviting tourists and residents of our surrounding communities to see inside the gates of Bruce Power, is something we look forward to every summer, and this year is no different,” said Dwight Irwin, manager of community relations. “The response in past years has been fantastic, and we expect to see a high number of registrations again due to the interest in our work providing clean, reliable power to Ontario and cancer-fighting medical isotopes worldwide.” Tours will be offered Monday to Friday in June at 10 a.m., and in July and August at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. (except statutory holidays), for guests who pre-register at www.brucepower.com/bustours . Note, some days are unavailable due to special events and the final tour of the season will be Aug. 31. It is highly recommended that participants pre-register to secure their seat, as space is limited. Guests should arrive at the visitors’ centre at least 30 minutes prior to their scheduled tour to watch the welcome film in the air-conditioned theatre and complete required security checks. There are limited walk-in spots for each tour, and you must arrive 45 minutes prior to departure and have the required identification to claim one of these spots. The Bruce Power Visitors’ Centre, located at 3394 Bruce County Road 20, northwest of Tiverton, is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding statutory holidays. Larger groups, such as service clubs, school and church groups, and other business and community organizations, are also welcome. To arrange a site tour for larger groups, call 519-361-7777 or E-mail: [email protected] . Public, Indigenous groups to get say on possible nuclear expansion
Residents of midwestern Ontario will soon get their say on whether they want more nuclear reactors in the region.
Bruce Power will be holding public information sessions and bus tours of their sprawling nuclear facility, as they embark on plans to build up to five more reactors along the shores of Lake Huron.
The public information sessions will take place on Nov. 19 and Dec. 10, starting at the Bruce Power Visitor’s Centre, located north of Kincardine.
Bruce Power has already sent out a request for proposals for potential nuclear options for the proposed expansion, which could include small modular reactors.
The Saugeen Ojibway Nation, the closest Indigenous community to Bruce Power, said they will not support any new nuclear expansion until decades of worth of nuclear waste has been dealt with.
Still, Bruce Power said they’ll engage with Indigenous communities and the public as they try and get support for their planned expansion, which is at least a decade away.
“Bruce Power is fortunate for the continued strong support from our surrounding communities over our many years of operation,” said James Scongack, Bruce Power’s chief development officer and executive vice president of operational services.
He added, “This is something we do not take for granted and we will continue to build upon the strong relationships with local Indigenous communities and the broader community through a commitment to openness and transparency. We are committed to keeping our communities up to date and engaged throughout the impact assessment process and will provide multiple opportunities to be involved.”
The proposed “Bruce C” would add up to 4,800 megawatts of power to Ontario’s electricity grid. Bruce Power’s current maximum electrical output from eight reactors is 6,600 megawatts, with a goal of reaching 7,000 megawatts by 2030, through upgrades to existing reactors.
Bruce Power is in the midst of a 13 year, $13 billion project to refurbish six of their eight reactors .
