There are scammers making guarantees about working, studying or travelling in Canada. They charge a lot of money for bad service or no service at all. Their actions can have serious consequences for you and your family.

No one can guarantee you a visa

Scammers will tell you that you meet the criteria for a visa, even if you don’t, so that they can take your money. Don’t be fooled . Find out if you’re eligible to come to Canada (opens in a new tab)   .

On this page

Using a visa agent, consequences of fraud, application fees, fake job offers, student scams.

You can apply for a visa on your own, or you can use a visa agent (called a “representative” in Canada). The agent helps you fill out forms, and they can also submit applications on your behalf . If you use a representative, you must include this information in your application. If you don’t, the application could be refused, and you could be banned from applying for 5 years.

There are 2 types of representatives:

  • Unpaid representatives help you with the application process without charging a fee , and they often include friends and family members. They fill out forms and submit your application for you, for free .
  • Paid representatives must be authorized in Canada to charge money for their services. They fill out forms and submit your application for you, for a fee .

Authorized representatives are regulated professionals who understand Canada’s immigration and application processes. They can be lawyers, paralegals, Quebec notaries, or consultants registered with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (opens in a new tab)   . They can explain the different visas, advise you on your application, and communicate with the Government of Canada on your behalf.

Be careful when hiring unauthorized visa agents

We won’t deal with visa agents who charge a fee but are not authorized representatives. If you use an unauthorized representative, we may return your application or refuse it.

Hiring a visa agent will not help your application get processed any faster or guarantee that your visa will be approved. Agents do not have special connections with Canadian visa officers. Canadian immigration officials follow the same steps and rules when reviewing all applications, whether you hire an agent or apply on your own.

If your application was refused, make sure you understand why it was refused before you reapply . Applying again with the same information is a waste of your time and money. It will not change the decision, and it will cost you more.

No one can guarantee that your visa will be approved .

If you hire an agent to help you fill out the application, ask people you trust to recommend an agent they used to get a visa. Get advice from a few people before you choose.

If the agent applies on your behalf, remember these tips:

  • Both of you have to fill out and sign the Use of a Representative Form (opens in a new tab)   . Failure to declare information on your application is considered lying, and your application may be refused .
  • Ask to be present when the agent submits your application through IRCC’s online system to make sure it gets sent. A lot of scammers will tell you that they’ve sent in your application, but they haven’t .

If you’re paying someone for their services

  • ask for a written contract and breakdown of the IRCC fees and the services you’re paying for
  • get a signed receipt for every payment you make

Don’t lie or send fake documents

It’s a serious crime to lie on an application or send fake or altered documents. Your application will be refused and you could be banned from Canada for at least 5 years .

You’re responsible for the information you give in a visa application even if you use a visa agent .

If a Canadian visa officer finds false information on an application, you’re the one who will face the consequences—not your agent .

If someone tells you to lie on a visa application or give fake documents, they are putting you and your family at risk .

Never sign blank forms or applications given to you by a visa agent.

Before you sign your application , make sure that all the information in your application and supporting documents is true and that you understand everything.

If you send false documents or information or your agent does

  • your application will be refused
  • you could be banned from Canada for at least 5 years
  • you could have a permanent record of fraud with IRCC

The Canadian government works with partners to train officers and watch for fake documents.

Don’t waste your money

You and your family shouldn’t be spending your life savings on an application. It costs around 6,000 (CAN$100) to apply for a visitor visa. Beware of scammers who charge a lot more than that. Application fees are the same for everyone.

  • temporary resident visa (visitor visa): $100 ( 6,000)
  • work permit * : $155 ( 9,300)
  • open work permit * : $255 ( 15,500)
  • study permit * : $150 ( 9,100)
  • biometrics: $85 ( 5,100)

You must pay to have your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) taken, but making an appointment is free .

Fees are given in Canadian dollars, followed by approximate rupee conversions.

* Once a study or work permit is approved, a visa will automatically be issued at no extra charge.

Beware of fake job offers and student scams

Scammers around you and on the internet will promise to get you a work or student visa for Canada. They may also tell you that once you get a visa, you will be able to apply to become a permanent resident (PR).

No one can guarantee you a visa or PR .

Before a Canadian company can hire a foreign worker, they must try to hire someone in Canada. The company has to get a document from the government that gives them permission to hire a foreign worker. The document is called a labour market impact assessment (LMIA), and it costs the company 60,200 (CAN$1,000) for each worker they want to hire. The company must pay this fee .

If a job offer sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a scam . Research the company and the job offer to make sure they’re both real before you pay a visa agent to help you.

Learn more about working in Canada (opens in a new tab)   .

Canadian companies have to pay the fee for the labour market impact assessment (LMIA). The government does not let the worker pay the cost. Beware of companies, recruiters or agents who ask you to pay this fee. If the company does not comply with the requirements to hire a foreign worker, the LMIA could be revoked, and your visa could be cancelled.

If the LMIA is approved, your employer should give you a copy of the approval letter for you to include with your work permit application. You need the LMIA approval letter before you can apply for the work permit.

It could be a scam if

  • a recruiter charges you money to find a job Note: Honest companies pay recruiters to find workers, so you shouldn’t have to pay for a job offer .
  • you’re asked to pay money up front for the right to apply, the labour market impact assessment (LMIA), training, or supplies like tools or a uniform
  • a recruiter or employer promises that you can move to Canada and start working in a few weeks
  • the wages seem too high for the job or region Note: The Government of Canada Job Bank (opens in a new tab)   lists average wages by occupation and city. You can enter the city or postal code for the job and find its salary range.
  • the job description is vague (for example, location, duties, benefits)
  • no experience is required
  • no interview is required
  • a recruiter or employer promises that once you have a job, your family can move to Canada
  • permanent residence (PR) is guaranteed once you’re working in Canada Note: No one can guarantee you PR .

Many companies will post job openings on their website. If the position offered to you is not on the company’s website, it could be a scam. Ask your friends or family in Canada to research the company and the job offer to make sure they’re both real.

If you’re applying to study in Canada:

  • Make sure the school is a designated learning institution (DLI) .
  • Don’t apply for a study permit without an acceptance letter.
  • Always pay tuition fees directly to the school .
  • Check to see if your school has services for international students .

If you want to work in Canada after graduation, make sure you’re eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP).

Don’t let a scammer take your dream away .

Learn more about studying in Canada and working after graduation (opens in a new tab)   .

Not all schools in Canada can accept international students . A designated learning institution (DLI) is a school that’s approved to host international students. If you want to study in Canada, make sure the school you’re applying to is on the designated learning institutions list (opens in a new tab)   .

Many schools have services to help international students learn about living in Canada, the city, weather, finding somewhere to live, health care, scholarships and many other things.

Not all designated learning institutions (DLIs) and not all programs of study make you eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) . Review the DLI list (opens in a new tab)   to see which schools offer programs that make you eligible for a PGWP. Learn more about working in Canada after you graduate (opens in a new tab)   .

You may be getting scammed if a visa agent or student recruiter

  • tells you to apply for a student visa without an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada Note: You need the acceptance letter before you can apply for a student visa. The DLI will send the acceptance letter directly to you.
  • promises you a letter of acceptance from a DLI if you pay them Note: If someone makes that promise, they’re likely part of a scam. An honest school will assess your language and academic abilities before providing any admission documents.
  • tells you that they can get you a discounted tuition rate for a fee Note: Speak with the school directly to discuss fees.
  • asks you to pay money to apply for a scholarship or to guarantee that your scholarship is approved Note: Applying for a scholarship is usually free and no one can guarantee you will get one.
  • tells you that you can stay in Canada for much longer than the length of your study permit
  • tells you that all DLIs and programs of study can make you eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP)

Protect yourself and your family

Scammers want to take your hard-earned money and give you false promises of guaranteed visas or permanent residence (PR). Don’t be fooled: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

How Much Does a Trip to Canada Cost?

Figuring out how much money to budget for your trip to Canada is a key step to planning your vacation. You want to budget your money in the smartest ways possible for the Canada vacation that best suits you. Surprises can be nice—like a Drake sighting—but not on the credit card bill.

Canada is a relatively expensive travel destination mostly due to its size (a lot of travel between places) and its taxes: even more reason to carefully plan your trip and its budget.

Budgeting for a trip to Canada covers many of the same categories as for a trip to any other country and prices are similar to those in the United States with some differences. Canadian taxes will be added on to the bill of many of your purchases in Canada— this includes, clothing, hotel stays, and dining. These taxes can increase your bill by up to 15%.

Transportation, accommodation, eating and sightseeing will eat up the bulk of your cash, but there are some other considerations special to Canada, like sales tax. Saving and spending wisely are possible for each category (except sadly the sales tax which is a fact of life in Canada) with a little forethought.

All the prices listed are in Canadian dollars as of 2020. Most Canadian hotels, restaurants, and stores accept credit cards.

Budget Travel vs Luxury Travel

Of course, like any country, Canada offers a range of travel experiences from budget to luxury. You can stay in a hostel or a five-star hotel in any major city. One popular form of travel that appeals to both penny pinchers and big spenders is camping, which not only lightens the financial load but gives access to Canada's beautiful natural landscapes.

Budget travelers to Canada should plan on spending up to $100 per day, which includes a night's stay at a campsite, hostel, dorm or budget hotel, food from supermarkets or fast food restaurants, public transportation and limited attractions.

Midrange travelers should budget between $150 and $300, and high-end travelers should plan on spending at least $300 per day, which includes a night at an appropriately priced hotel or resort, most meals out and attractions.

Getting to Canada

Airfare to Canada obviously depends on where you are flying in from, however; in general, Canada is among the world's most expensive countries in which to fly.

The biggest airport in Canada is Toronto Pearson International Airport and you can fly direct from many worldwide cities.

The Vancouver and Calgary international airports in western Canada and the Montréal-Trudeau International Airport in Quebec on the other side of the country are the country's other major airport hubs.

You may want to consider flying into a U.S. airport and driving to Canada. Especially with the closeness of, for example,  Buffalo and Toronto , flying into the U.S. may be a cheaper and even more convenient option.

Be sure to have all the right travel documents for visiting Canada .

Accommodation Budget

Accommodation in Canada should probably work out to about half of your daily expenditures. The country has a wide range of hostels, dorms, vacation rentals bed and breakfasts and hotels, including most international brands like Holiday Inn, Sheraton, Hilton, Four Seasons, etc.

Cost saving accommodation includes hostels , university dorms (which are excellent money savers, especially in summer when students are out), campgrounds, motels and budget hotels (2-star), like Super 8  and Days Inn (both part of Wyndham Worldwide brand), Travelodge  or  Comfort Inn . These moderate accommodation choices will sometimes include breakfast and should cost between $25 to $100 per night.

Motels outside of major cities will often offer rooms for under $100 per night.

Vacation rentals, though they range greatly in price, offer an excellent opportunity to save money on restaurant meals, parking, wifi and other expenses you would pay for at a hotel.

Mid-range hotels and bed & breakfasts (3 or 4 star) in Canada will run in the $100 to $250 range for major cities and less in towns or smaller cities. The hotel price may include breakfast.

Luxury accommodation includes resorts, high-end hotels, lodges and bed & breakfasts (4 or 5 star) that can range from $200 to $500+. These hotels may or may not include breakfast. Many resort prices will include at least one meal.

Remember that taxes in the range of 18% will be added to your hotel bill, so a $100 hotel stay is actually closer to $120.

Transportation Budget

Transportation costs can be quite steep in Canada. Especially given the country is so large, making your way across it can mean costly airfares, train tickets or gas.

Most people will limit the extent of their trip to Canada and cover only specific geographic regions, such as the West Coast, the Toronto/Niagara region and/or Montreal Quebec and/or the East Coast, which includes the Maritimes provinces.

Most people rent a car when they visit Canada as it gives them flexibility and because the transportation costs do tend to be relatively high. If you can start or end your visit in a big city, like Toronto or Montreal, a car is generally unnecessary and you can save on parking.

Canadians do not use the train in the same way that Europeans do. Yes, there is a national train system, but destinations, connections, and regularity are not great, especially given the steep cost. Nevertheless, the VIA train is a relaxing and scenic way to get yourself around Canada and has free wifi aboard.

Buses are definitely the cheapest way to make a long journey but of course, the downside is that they are not as quick as the train. Megabus  is a bus line that offers express, discount service in southern Ontario and Quebec. All buses have free wifi and fares can be as low as a few dollars per hour of travel.

Canada is not famous for its discount airfare and there is nothing comparable to ones like Ryanair in Europe. WestJet , Jazz , and Porter Air are your best bet to score a flying deal.

Taxis are a quick way to get around major cities, but less available the more rural you are. Taxi costs are generally determined by the meter except in some cases when there are fixed prices from major airports.

Taxis in Canada begin with a fixed rate of around $3.50 and then charge $1.75 to $2 per kilometer. Uber and Lyft are also readily available.

  • Cost to rent a car per day in Canada: $30 to $75.
  • Cost for return VIA train ticket Toronto to Montreal: $100 to $300.
  • One way airfare from Toronto to Vancouver $220 to $700.
  • Commuter train cost from Hamilton to Toronto (about 1.5 hrs) is $12.10.
  • The light rail from Vancouver International Airport to downtown Vancouver (30 mins) costs $7 to $10.
  • Montreal subway tokens cost $3.50.

Food and Drink Costs

Food costs in Canada are slightly more expensive than in the United States, in part due to the 10% to 15% tax that will be added to your restaurant bill at the end of the meal. The prices listed on the menu are generally before tax. This means if you order a $10 burger, your bill, depending on the province, will actually be something like $11.30. Then you would add another $2 for the tip, so the total bill would be $13.30.

Open-air fresh food markets and supermarkets offer the chance to buy the local fare and save on restaurant dining costs.

Alcohol will also be taxed at restaurants at various rates across the country by province. Sometimes taxes on alcohol are included in the listed price, such as in LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) stores in Ontario.

  • Breakfast at a diner: $15.
  • Coffee at Starbucks: $3 to $7.
  • Dinner for two, including wine, at fine dining restaurant: $200+.

Entertainment and Attractions, Sample Costs

Movie tickets: $12 to $18.

Typical museum entrance cost: $12 to $22.

Canada's Wonderland theme park entrance fee without tax (includes rides, but not parking or food): $39.99 (buy online at this rate to save).

Whale watching excursion (3 hrs): $50 to $120, depending on the size of boat and number of passengers.

Many of the major Canadian cities will have an attractions pass that will save you money if you visit a number of attractions within a certain period.

  • Parking $3 to $10 per hour or $25 per day. Hotels in major cities will charge about $45 per day to park your car.
  • Adult ski pass for one day at Whistler : $139, Adult ski pass for one day at Mount Tremblant : $99.

Other Expenses

Tipping is customary in Canada right across the country. In general Canadians tip 15% to 20% for services, such as restaurant and bar servers, hairdressers, beauticians, cab drivers, hotel bellhops and more.

For most casual visitors to Canada, the best advice for converting money is to use your credit card for purchases and make larger ATM local currency withdrawals at Canadian banks to last you a few days and avoid frequent withdrawal fees.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Canada

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Canada flight deals.
  • If you plan to visit multiple cities during your trip to Canada, consider booking flights that land in Quebec City or Montreal. Quebec and Montreal are both located near Canada’s east coast, which will shorten your overall flight time. These cities are also well connected by road and public transport to other major Canadian cities, such as Ottawa, Toronto and Winnipeg.
  • If you plan to hire a car with your children when you arrive at a Canadian airport, you must adhere to the road rules. These vary from region to region. For example, in Ontario children under 8 years of age, who weight less than 36 kg, or that are smaller than 145 cm in height, must be in a suitable restraint. Whereas in Alberta, kids under 6 or that weigh less than 18 kg must be suitably restrained.
  • Domestic flights in Canada tend to be very expensive. This means it is usually cheaper to fly to whichever Canadian city you want to base yourself in during your stay, rather than flying to a nearby city and then taking a domestic flight.
  • If you are flying to Canada to see Niagara Falls, you should fly to Toronto Airport (YYZ), which is about a 1 h 10 min drive from the attraction. Alternatively, you could fly to Buffalo Airport (BUF) in the United States, which is only a 30-minute drive from the falls.
  • If you are planning to fly to Canada during the summer, there are several popular festivals and events which can increase flight prices to certain areas. For example, flights to Calgary in July may be more expensive due to the Calgary Stampede, which is attended by millions each year. The Vancouver Light Festival also takes place around this time, so it is a good idea to book summer flights to Vancouver well in advance.

Top 5 airlines flying to Canada

Medíocre. The food wasn't good (although not bad, bad) and the staff wasn't kind. I asked for n extra blanket, the steward never came back, serving us roughly.

Excellent apart from transport to actual plane 10 minutes from the actual gate , walking out in the tarmac in the rain and having to climb stairs to enter while holding luggage.

Good aorcraft 777 but Worst food ever Breakfast was a bû’with matonnaise… Staff was nice but invisible most of the flight

Business class in the second leg - CDG-EVN was a disaster.

Everything went smoothly with Air France. There was a delay in departure which seemed to relate to the immigration services being short staffed.

worst experience ever i choose my seat in advance and also have my seat selected in my boarding and the they told me that my seat has been changed without notify me

No bording was given for next trip on same carrier, food was very moderate.

Lost luggage, 2 bags were badly damaged and one of the bags came open.

A couple of minor delays in boarding but very professional and efficient staff.

Crew was professional. Boarding has few seats . Since the plane was not full would have been nice to change seat on the internet

Lost my bag. My first ever flight with them that they forced me to gate check my bag on, due to them having a 30 year old plane with small carry on bins, and they lost my bag. Never again.

It was good. They ran out of snacks, which we didn't get the first time through. Free movie selection was great. Glad my husband had extra headphones with him. Airplane was still cramped, but we survived. I had to squish between him and another man. I'm glad I was smaller than them, but still tight.

The flight got canceled multiple times and we had to drive their to reach midnight for our next morning interview. Poor and unriable experience. Now have to ask for a refund since we didn't need their rescheduled flight three days later.

Air Canada domestic flight is so so and is not conformable at all. Air Cañada international flight is Ok. The crew of international flight is more experienced and the plane is a bit better.

I didn’t fly I had to cancel as I booked the flight incorrectly, as in reverse order. I hope I wasn’t charged as I cancelled immediately.

The seats are so close together and when the person in front of you reclines the back of their seat you have even less room. It's quite uncomfortable.

Short flight, crew members were very nice, so much so I'll take the return flight next weekend

All but one of four were on time. One was delayed for an hour

The trip was fine and uneventful. The seat in business class was very uncomfortable which was disappointing given the extra cost. It was spacious but it felt like I was sitting on metal bars. The food in business class wasn't very good. The flight was ahead of time, the staff was professional and courteous and our luggage arrived safely.

Got the email to check in but when I tried to check in it said "cannot connect to server", so checked in at the desk.

I'm Canaadian. I hate Air Canada. I used to give them a pass on their international service. No longer, They suck across the board now! Old planes, exhausted staff bad food and shitty entertainment. Your seats need reupholstered! Start with that...

Very poor, flight cancelled, no help from Lufthansa customer service.

bad seats, meager food quantity. bread not fresh. Hollywood films lack entertainment.

Great flight. Left on time, not very crowded. Quiet and the right temperature.

terrible. they cancelled the flight 1 day before flying out and just sent an email to inform the same. i had to scramble on my own paying more to find another flight.

Boarding is as always an issue. Slow and long boarding time.

The flight was cancelled, and no reason was given. The flight was rebooked 3 days later. Calling customer service was next to impossible. There was no option to get in a queue in the phone call. It simply said all agents are busy call back later. It is 2024 and not 1970s to have such outdated technology. Live chat was even worse as I was 753 in line and it kept getting timed out. The icing on the cake was that the working hours was something like 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM? Really for international airline when the flights usually depart early in the morning? Things only got worse in the check-in counter in Mumbai. The monitor in the check-in counter said that the flight was on time even though it was cancelled. There were 2 agents helping a 747 full of passengers. It was 5:30 AM by the time I checked into the hotel. I tried reaching Kayak (Chatdeal via email) days before the onward flight from Seattle and no one cared to respond even after reminder. I will go with Expedia in the future. In fact, for my next trip to Japan I have already used Expedia.

Very very poor. Reliability is the main issue. The flight from Bangalore to Frankfurt was delayed by 8 hours and hence we couldn’t make the flight from Frankfurt to St. Louis ( which was later canceled by Lufthansa ) . Bangalore airport lounge 080 is EXCELLENT. The shower in the lounge is first class. Wished they had some extendable lounge chairs for sleeping for the weary passengers. FRANKFURT AIRPORT IS HORRIBLE! WILL NEVER EVER FLY IN OR OUT OF FRANKFURT. There is no jetways for the Lufthansa flight and the bus took so long to reach the next terminal. We had to clear immigration and security checks again and again though we are transit travelers.

I paid a lot of money for seat selection and was miserable for flight duration

Le personnel attentionné et trilingue, la tranquillité du vol. Aucun aspect négatif

The layover time was barely 1.30 hrs and the security clearance sucks. I almost missed my flight but for the help of a manger. She held the flight for me. My baggage did not arrive. The entertainment did not work, I had to switch my seat 3 times for different issues. The travel was not fun

It took over an hour to check in my bag a there was just one person at the counter. Security lines for business class also took a while. Although I reported 3 hours before my flight I made it to the gate 20 mins before boarding. To add to that jewelry was removed from my checked in baggage. I am submitting a separate complaint to Mumbai airport for that.

The check at Accra was very bad . I had to be in the queue for solid two hours simple because your staff were pushing people and lifting the balustrade for them to jump the queue. This situation made us very made with your Accra check in crew. I have video of what I am putting across and I am happy I have the opportunity now.I can send the video to you if you are ready to punish those involved.

Seated in business class. Bed too hard and no comforter. Way too many seats in business class for number of crew so never felt particularly looked after.

Great and pleasant service and smooth flight with wonderful and clean amenities.

Never got on this AA flight since British Airways delayed my original flight 29 hours

International flight from CCU to MIA . paid 1235 dollars at this low season. NO CHECK IN BAGGGAE ALLOWED ?????????????? NOT EVEN ONE?????????? Never ever I will even thing about buying tickets and flying with them again. Just A BIG NO

Biz class has a middle seat. 🙄. WiFi only for first class. No free seat assignments. Basically nickel and dime approach. They need to take lessons from Singapore Air and the likes. Never again.

I was called up at the gate not knowing why and then handed over my passport and was told I was being upgraded from Premier economy to Business class and it was wonderful. I've never been upgraded before and it was such a pleasant experience.

I have not used food or entertainment all other services I used were simply excellent. BA crew is always good in service. The BA Crew at anygiven flight is simply amazing.

Worst International flight I ever had in my whole life time. Boarding is the worst of all and flight experience was also not good. Screens were not working, seats were not comfortable and lot more.

Comfortable seats, on time departures and arrival, and helping staff

Very very impressed with the proactive care and alertness with which ABHISHEK Chowdhary took care of us. Quietl, dignified , very alert, and meticulous. Very impressed. Also with SUNiL Kumar who was there for us in a very helpful way. SHERLY ALEX On Flight 119, BOM TO JFK CUSTOMER ON SEAT 21C, 21ST March 2024

If you are traveling to mumbai -- must try SFO - MUM direct flight. It's a game changer when you are traveling to India. Timings are well designed, optimal and makes the travel enjoyable.

On time boarding, proper information, friendly and cordial approach of staff, particularly crew members and the most important timely available of checked in baggage after arrival.

Air India needs to launch new planes. Seats are worn out, most of the plane's TV screens wasn't working, USB charging ports wasn't working as well so I can charge my phone & watch my download movies, Food was mediocre, the plane smells. How can Air India put through their customers with this bad experience? This complaint needs to get escalated to the upper management. How shameful is the upper management to improve this plane? The flight is going back & forth from NEW YORK & DELHI. Two of the big cities in the world and this is how your experience is for sitting in a plane for 12+ hrs? Get your planes fixed ASAP Air India (TATA Management do your job right).

One of my worst experiences. Nothing was working in the flight. Entertainment system was broken, seat was very uncomfortable, crew did not offer water until food was provided, lights were not working, attendant call was not working. In short everything was broken and duct taped.

Air India need a big change of in all departments.

Boarding and crew were nice Food was normal No entertainment was on the flight. Neither TV screen was there nor Wi-Fi connection to the mobile phone or iPad was there. Even the budget wing of AIR INDIA ie AIR INDIA EXPRESS provided us Wi-Fi connectivity on our mobile phone in their DOMESTIC SECTOR. So not providing Wi-Fi connectivity on international flight was unthinkable.

Old aircraft, crew were so so. Meals were mediocre. Flight to delhi was delayed. Lounge needs update and was mediocre too.

Top tips for finding a cheap flight out of India

  • If you plan to visit multiple cities during your trip to Canada, consider booking flights that land in Quebec City or Montreal. Quebec and Montreal are both located near Canada’s east coast, which will shorten your overall flight time. These cities are also well connected by road and public transport to other major Canadian cities, such as Ottawa, Toronto and Winnipeg.
  • Domestic flights in Canada tend to be very expensive. This means it is usually cheaper to fly to whichever Canadian city you want to base yourself in during your stay, rather than flying to a nearby city and then taking a domestic flight.

Top 5 airlines serving from India to Canada

For me was not enough water. + 200 ml would be perfect… Generally it was good.

Again we were late leaving Austin , there was no tv screen for the 3.5 hr flight, the pizza I bought was kinda bland

It was fine. The seating was tight. My husband is 6' 2", so we were glad to get seats with no one in front of him. I was glad that the plane wasn't packed so I could spread out.

Main chicken dish was okay but the beef snack was not. Restrooms in the back were clean and uncrowded in spite of the full plane, although our friend in the section forward did not find them the same there. Delayed one hour on tarmac before we could leave Rome.

Canada, located in the northern part of North America, is a vast country that is best experienced by going crisscross across the massive expanse.

Hit the roads to know the real Canada. Pick from the number of scenic drives and be amazed by the splendid and the bizarre that the country has to offer on the way.

And the quaint like this will keep jumping at you as you travel through Canada.

There is a lot that Canada has to offer beyond its urban centres and the Niagara Falls. Nothing like taking to the roads to explore the wonderous hinterland.

The Banff National Park, under the protective shelter of UNESCO, is famed for its sensational beauty of rippling lakes, snow-topped mountains and lush meadows.

Badlands Trails: Passes through Calgary, famous for the festivity of Calgary Stampede and Drumheller, famed for being the dinosaur capital of the world. The sparse and dry topography of the region sits in beautiful contrasts to the greenery everywhere.

Icefield Parkway: The ride is a trek back to the ice age. It takes you through the Rocky Mountains to the Columbia ice fields. It provides with stunning views of glaciers in the middle of their slides. A series of roaring waterfalls, glistening lakes and miles and miles of forests is what you encounter on this highway that joins the Jasper National Park and Banff.

A little further, transmits you to lands of beautiful inlets and fjords and waterfalls besides lakes and mountains. The Sea-to-Sky Gondola takes you up the peak with the most scintillating views of the mountains and lakes below.

The Cabot Trail. It is a 300 kms of awe-inspiring vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and the St. Lawrence Gulf with a number of charming towns along the way. Meandering through the northern end of the Cape Breton Island you might sight the Finback, the Humpback, the Pilot or the Minke Whales.

The Algonquin Corridor of Highway 60 through the famous Algonquin Park with a plethora of holidaying choices between beaches, lakes, precipices, rivers and marshlands is a fantastic place for relaxed extended family holidays. You may find the moose paying you a visit too.

THE CHARMING, THE QUAINT AND THE BIZARRE

As you drive crisscrossing the country, you come across charming towns and bizarre practices so numerous, it is difficult to enumerate.

Alberta famed for its hot springs in British Columbia; Summerside in Prince Edward Island with stately sea-side heritage homes; and Neepawa in Manitoba, the ‘lily capital of the world’ are only some of the charming towns of Canada. St. John, the city with vibrant coloured buildings, sloping streets and maritime culture is another charming corner of the world.

Tobermory, Ontario, the freshwater scuba capital of the world has 22 shipwrecks to explore. Dawson city with building facades of the period of the Goldrush are some of the quaint ones. Then there is this city of Humboldt in the Prairies of Saskatchewan that has a water tank masquerading as a lighthouse when the nearest sea is 1500 kms away.

Moose Jaw at Saskatchewan with underground tunnels as a tourist attraction and Dawson where a saloon serves cocktail with a mummified human toe in it are just befuddling bizarre.

NATURAL WONDERS

Canada’s vast expanse and the sparse population is a blessing. The country still abounds with almost-untouched virgin lands standing invitingly in its graceful glory.

The Banff, the Niagara Falls and the Whistler snowy slopes are simply mind-blowing places to visit in Canada.

Q. Which Canadian cities are the best to visit? A. Looking for Canada vacation packages but having trouble choosing which city to visit? Though it depends completely on your interest and the kind of activities you want to enjoy during your stay, you should plan to visit Montreal, Quebec City, Vancouver, Ontario, Calgary, Toronto, and Victoria. Q. How long does it take to get a visa to Canada? A. On the website of the Canadian government, you can submit two application forms to request a visa. Once you have verified the form is completed and attached the necessary supporting documents, you can submit the form. The embassy will contact you for an interview after verifying your information. From the date you have applied, the processing of your application takes between 10 and 15 days. You may look up the status of your visa online. Q. What time of year is the whale-watching season in Canada? A. For the largest population of killer whales in the world, visit British Columbia to view orcas. Observe humpback, grey, and minke whales as well. For the finest viewing, visit from April to October. In addition to a sizable population of humpback, minke, and beluga whales, Quebec is also home to the world's largest known mammal, the blue whale, as well as the fin whale, which can be seen there from May to October. To see the less common spotted whale in addition to minke and sperm whales, travel to Newfoundland and Labrador. The optimum months for it are May through September. Around the same time of the year, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are also excellent places to go whale watching. Q. What is Calgary Stampede and when will it take place? A. The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo that takes place in Calgary, Alberta, in July. The rodeo event calls itself "the greatest outdoor show on earth" and consists of a variety of performances, exhibitions, and festivals that long for over ten days. Along with parades, concerts, stage acts, chuckwagon races, agricultural competitions, and other displays, one of the biggest rodeos in the world draws millions of spectators each year. Q. What is Vancouver known for the most? A. In addition to having a year-round harborside beauty, Vancouver, a busy seaport city in British Columbia, is atmospheric, artsy, and full of architectural and cultural gems. Visit the 400-acre Stanley Park, a national historic monument, while you are in Vancouver. Along with the charming Chinatown neighbourhood, you should also visit the Vancouver Aquarium, the Seawall, a 28 km waterfront route that passes through some of the city's top attractions, Downtown and the West End for its beaches, Gastown, and Granville Island. Q. What should I eat while visiting Canada? A. You should surely try Poutine, which is almost on every menu and is made of gravy, cheese, and fries. Do try Bannock, Butter Tarts, Timbits, Tourtière, which is a meat pie, and Montréal Style Bagels. There are various food options for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Q. Which are the top Canadian cities to visit? A. Looking for Canada packages and cannot settle for the places to visit? You should zero in on these cities to make the most of the second largest country in the world; Montreal, Quebec City, Vancouver, Ontario, Calgary, Toronto, and Victoria. Q. Which is the best time to visit Canada? A. If you are in the process of shortlisting Canada tour packages, make sure you know its seasons well in order to plan the month of your visit. The peak season, however, are the summer months starting from late June to all of September when the air is nice and warm and the schools out of session. Canada’s most popular destinations like Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto get extremely busy at this time of the year, though the country is quieter the remoter you travel. Almost all national parks of the country are heaving with tourists in the summer months because it is vacation time for kids and they are out in full strength with their families exploring around. The accommodation rates do go up in these months; so it makes sense for you to close your booking several months ahead. Q. How long does it take to get a Canadian visa? A. As you sift through Canada travel packages , you should be aware of the time required to get a Canadian visa. You can apply for the visa on the Government of Canada website, where you need to fill in two application forms. Attach the mandatory support documents and once you have checked the form for its completion, you can submit the same. After the embassy verifies your details, it will call you for an interview. The processing of the application takes between 10-15 days from the date on which you had applied. You can check your visa status online. Q. Which is the whale-watching season in Canada? A. Head to British Colombia to see Orcas, known for the world’s highest population of the Killer Whales. Also spot humpback whales, grey whales and minke whales. Come here between April and October for the best sighting. Quebec also has a sizable population of Minkes, Belugas and humpback whales, but you can also spot the blue whale, the largest known mammal on the planet and the fin whale here from May through October. Visit Newfoundland and Labrador to spot the rarer spotted whale apart from the minke and sperm whales. May through September is the best time for it. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are also great for whale-watching around the same time of the year. Q. What are the popular events and festivals of Canada? A. A veritable cultural landscape, Canada is known for its multi-cultural ethnicity and the resultant diversity in its art and culture scene. The International Fringe Theatre Festival in Edmonton is the oldest and the largest fringe theatre festival in the world to take place every August. Montreal’s Jazz Festival needs no introduction as does the Toronto Film Festival. The Jazz festival is an annual event that kicks off late June and continues for 11 days. Ontario’s Stratford Festival is also a popular one for it is the world’s largest classical repertory theatre. Q. What is Calgary Stampede and when does it happen? A. Calgary Stampede is a yearly rodeo show held every July in Calgary, Alberta. The rodeo event is a mix of shows, exhibitions and festival that pans out over 10 days and bills itself as ‘the greatest outdoor show on earth’. There are millions of visitors every year who come to witness one of the world’s largest rodeos, aside from parades, concerts, stage shows, chuckwagon racing, agricultural competitions, among other exhibits. Q. What activities can I pursue in Banff, Canada? A. A part of the Banff National Park in Canada’s Alberta region, it is regarded as the country’s best adventure destination. With a Rocky-mountain-dominating skyline, at Banff you can ride the Banff Gondola to the Sulphur Mountain, go hiking or skiing in the Sunshine Village, go whitewater rafting on the Kicking Horse River, visit Lake Moraine during sunrise, drive the famous Icefields Parkway or go hiking on the Athabasca Glacier. The Banff Avenue has its share of chateau-style resorts, cool cafes, and souvenir boutiques. Q. What is Vancouver most famous for? A. When in Vancouver visit the national historical site, the 400-acre Stanley Park. You also need to round up the Vancouver Aquarium, Seawall - a 28 km waterfront path that takes you through some of the best sites in the city, Downtown and West End for its beaches, Gastown and Granville Island apart from the quaint Chinatown neighbourhood. The free-of-cost Discover Niagara Shuttle is in full operation in this season. The spring and the fall brings in fewer tourists because of the drop in temperatures before it entirely freezes over in the winter. Canada

At A Glance

  • Canada covers a vast area of land. It is virtually impossible to see it all in one trip, regardless of how much time you have. Definitely choose one or two regions that you can explore in depth. You'll have a more fulfilling experience and you'll save yourself a lot of money. Every region is different so do some research to determine what appeals to you the most.
  • If you're hoping to cover vast distances, then flying is the most convenient way to get around the country. It is also one of the most expensive. Other options include taking trains, buses, or renting your own vehicle. Bus connections are decent but not great. They typically connect the largest cities. Having your own vehicle will allow you more flexibility and you will be able to delve into the experience on a different level.
  • One fun way to experience the national parks throughout the country is to travel with a RV. This gives you the added flexibility of having your own vehicle, and you have your accommodation with you wherever you go. Many of the campgrounds have adequate hookups for RVs so this is a great way to experience all that the country has to offer.
  • Wildlife spotting is a popular activity throughout the country. Whether you're looking for bears, whales, or something else, it's best to make sure you're traveling during the appropriate season. Also make sure you have a good guide with you as that can make all of the difference.
  • You'll find most major western chain restaurants throughout the country. Fast food options are abundant and cheap, but generally the quality is quite low. Instead, look for local options. These are everywhere in the larger cities, and available on a smaller scale in the more rural locations.

Ans. The months of June and August during Summer see the most visitors to Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada. This is because the mist and air from the waterfall cool the surroundings and provide a break for tourists who have been visiting on foot all day. Because of the decline in temperatures as it completely freezes over in the winter, fewer tourists visit in the spring and fall. In the high season, the Maid of the Mist boat trips is quite popular since they give you a sense of the volume and impact of the falls. Most Popular Canada Tour Packages

About Canada Holidays It is general knowledge that Canada is the second-largest country in the world. But, what so many of us don’t know is that Canada is also an influx of charming landscapes. Its awe-inspiring scenery, vibrant cities and cultures and welcoming vibe make it a very popular tourist destination, especially for Asians.

And, to make this awe-inspiring scenery extend to a heart-warming trip, Thomas Cook India is here to help you choose the kind of holiday you can make the most out of.

Canada is the land of majestic mountains. It is the land of lush green forests, and mesmerizing coastlines. What we know of Canada is very little compared to what the reality of the harmonious country is. And, well, do you know what its reality is? Vibrant and culturally rich cities full of natural and manmade wonders- yes, that’s what. Canada is home to people from different cultures and backgrounds. The accepting nature of this country makes home to people of different descent- British, French and others.

How to go to Canada? Multiple Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Bangalore have constant flights from India to reach Canada . These flights connect to most major Canadian cities of Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal. While most flights are generally connecting flights that have one or two halts, there are also some 15-hour long direct flights from New Delhi to Toronto and Mumbai to Toronto.

Best time to go to Canada : Yes, we know that countries of the west remind us of snowfall (the sight of which looks straight out from a fairytale), and snow-covered streets. But, as tempting as it is to visit Canada during the winter, the best time to visit Canada is during summer, between June and September. The weather is warm and pleasant. This is the perfect time to enjoy natural landscapes such as lakes, gardens and parks. This is also the ideal time to visit the countryside and to enjoy outdoor lunches and picnics.

Winter, of course, also has pros and cons of its own. However, Canada experiences extreme cold during the winter as the temperature drops drastically. But winter also means that you would get to enjoy winter sports like skating and skiing. Depending on the activities you want to engage in, and the places you want to visit, you must decide if you want to visit during the summer or winter.

Places to visit in Canada: Quebec City: Quebec City is one of the most famous tourist destinations of Canada . If you’re someone who enjoys the feel of colourful old towns, high-domed churches and narrow streets filled with tiny art stalls and ice cream places, then Quebec City is the place to visit! Called North America’s oldest walled city, we would recommend Quebec for couples looking forward to a romantic getaway. Niagara Falls: Of course, no discussion about Canada will ever be complete without a mention of the marvelous, majestic and mesmerizing Niagara Falls . As is commonly known, one can see half of the falls from the town of Niagara in Canada, while the other half can be seen from the United States of America. For those interested, there are also ferry services that tour you around the falls. En route these ferry jet boats is a remarkable experience of its own, especially when one nears the falls and feels the gentle spray of water on their face.

The town of Niagara is not just known for these falls, but also for the many casinos that are spread around the area. St John’s: The artistic town of St John’s is famous among locals and tourists alike as Mini San Francisco for its colourful, picture-perfect town vibe. This town, with its technicoloured houses, has a vibrant atmosphere and appeals to the creative side of even the most practical of souls. Despite being one of the oldest towns of the country, St John’s has a refreshing vibe that makes for a pleasant getaway. Whistler: Whistler hosts the largest ski resorts in the entire North American continent. This is a winter wonderland and has everything- from snowboarding and skiing to tobogganing. Whistler, however, is not a day trip, and we would recommend staying there for a couple of days to make the most out of the many resorts in the area. Tofino: Tofino is the perfect place to go to if you're looking for a beach-y getaway. For the love of sea, sand and sun, you must indulge in a visit to Tofino and explore the beautiful Long Beach and Chester Man beach. Old Montreal: For all of you old-school souls, Old Montreal will literally seem like a scene from your favourite 18th-century novel. With impressive architecture, horse-drawn carriages, domed buildings and quaint bistros, the city of Old Montreal has an old-worldly charm to it. This is actually a perfect vacation spot, especially if you're looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Churchill: This is one of our personal favourites to visit in Canada. And, for one particular reason: polar bears. Churchill is the polar bear of the world! If even that doesn't sound exciting to you (HOW!), then what about underwater activities? Churchill is the hub of that and more!

What to eat in Canada? Poutine: Out of respect for this amazing dish, we had to put it first! Imagine a plate full of hot, crispy fries topped with cheese and rich gravy of your choice. Does it sound tempting? This French-Canadian dish has gained considerable popularity over time and is now available globally. The dish has vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian variants. Butter tarts: Well, tarts are not a big novelty. But, how often have you heard of butter tarts? They sound ordinary but believe us when we say their taste is anything but ordinary. Flaky pastry shells are filled with butter, sugar and eggs to make the lip-smacking butter tarts that Canada is so famous for! Bannock: Bannock, essentially a type of bread, was the staple food of Canada's Aboriginal people. However, over the years this bread has undergone many changes. Now, one would find many versions of bannock available in most patisseries throughout the country. There is baked bannock and then, there is fried bannock. This is one of those things that you would want to carry back with you! Caesar Cocktail: Who doesn't like cocktails? Nobody. Yes, we thought so! Well, when in Canada, you must let loose and party a little. And, what better way to party than by trying the country's national cocktail? The Caesar, made with vodka, clamato juice, Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce is Canada's version of the Bloody Mary. But what really makes this set out from the others is the garnishing. Along with the traditional garnishing of a salt rim and celery stalk, some restaurants and bars have upped their game by including an entire roast chicken, sliders, onion rings and even hot dogs as rim companions! Pouding chômeur: The name of this pudding literally means 'unemployment pudding'. It is said that this pudding was introduced during the time of the Great Depression. This classic French-Canadian dessert is made of a few basic ingredients- cake batter topped with hot syrup. Its charm lies not in its ingredients or preparation, but in its deliciously sweet taste that melts the heart and its woes!

What to do in Canada: Visit the CN Tower: The CN Tower is the landmark of Toronto. It is an 1815-feet long tower that highlights the city’s skyline. The tower offers not just a very mesmerizing view, but also a very exciting experience through the glass floor. Looking down through the glass below your feet is a once-in-a lifetime experience, truly!

Another exciting opportunity for all adventurous souls is walking on the edge of the CN tower. Equipped with protection gear like jumpsuits and harness, walking on the edge is sure to give a much-needed adrenaline rush! Mountain Biking: The winter land, as many people believe Canada to be, is not just about winter activities like skiing and snowboarding. It is also about outdoor activities like mountain biking in British Columbia. Canadian citizens, especially the people of Vancouver are very fond of outdoor activities as they like to make the most out of the pleasant weather. These enthusiasts have mapped out several mountain bikes trails. The towns of Sooke and Campbell River also have suitable terrains on which one can experience bicycle tours. Canoe Your Way: The landscapes of Canada offer more than just peace of mind. The mesmerizing icy blue lakes at Banff offer you the chance to float on a canoe, that you can navigate on your own, with your significant other. The cherry on top is that the beautiful lakes are surrounded by majestic fir trees and Canadian Rocky Mountains.

The same lakes also offer the option of kayaking, if you’re looking for a more thrilling activity. Hop through West Queen West: West Queen West is Canada’s trendiest and the hippest neighbourhood because of its amazing street art. This area is a must visit to pacify the spontaneous, creative soul within you. West Queen West is home to the trendiest artist and houses a lot of galleries. What’s more, the area also offers a chance to go on a free graffiti tour! Don’t miss out on exploring galleries like the Propeller and the Birch Contemporary. Skate through the Ottawa Canal: UNESCO has declared Ottawa Canal a world heritage site. And, the 202 km Rideau Canal is an entry in the Guinness Book of World as the world’s longest naturally frozen lake. This lake is best suited for ice skating during the months of January, February and March. The lake is surrounded by snack stations and changing stations. This region also hosts the Winterlude Festival which has ice sculptures, live music and dance festivals. Party in Vancouver City: This is probably the most exciting invitation for most of our readers. Vancouver is known for its wild and frolic nightlife! With various clubs situated in a line, you will find enough and more options to unwind with a pint of beer and some delectable snacks.

So, what are you waiting for? Book your Canada tour through Thomas Cook India. All you have to do is tell us where you want to go and when, and we will plan it out for you!

Security situation

In the context of recent developments in Canada and in India, there are calls for protests and some negative sentiment towards Canada in traditional media and on social media. Demonstrations, including anti-Canada protests, could occur and Canadians may be subjected to intimidation or harassment. In Delhi and the National Capital Region, you should keep a low profile with strangers, and not share your personal information with them. Avoid crowded areas, including public transportation. You should always travel with someone and inform a friend or a family member of your travel plans.

Consular services in person are temporarily unavailable in and around Bengaluru, Chandigarh and Mumbai. Consular services in person at the High Commission of Canada in New Delhi will remain available.

Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir

The security situation in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is tense. There are high risks of violent protests, civil unrest and acts of terrorism and militancy.

Violent clashes between militants and security forces occur regularly. Terrorist attacks against security forces have led to civilian casualties. Further attacks could take place at any time. You could find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Indian army has enhanced powers in this territory. Authorities may impose curfews and security restrictions on short notice.

  • Avoid gatherings and demonstrations
  • Always carry ID
  • Expect a heightened security presence and security checks
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities

Border areas with Pakistan

The level of tension between India and Pakistan may change suddenly. You could experience difficulties when travelling between the two countries. You may be subject to scrutiny if officials from either country become aware that you have recently travelled to the other.

The security situation along the border with Pakistan, especially along the Line of Control (LoC), which separates the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh from Pakistan-administered Kashmir, remains volatile. Cross-border gunfire and shelling are occurring sporadically along the LoC. The presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance also constitute a risk.

Although international travellers regularly use the Wagah border crossing linking Amritsar, India, to Lahore, Pakistan, it remains vulnerable to attack. Security measures are in place. You may experience long delays.

Parts of Northeastern India

Several extremist and insurgent groups are active in the northeastern states of Assam and Manipur. They regularly target local government and security forces and may use various criminal activities to finance their activities.

Ethnic tensions in the State can also lead to conflict and civil unrest.

There is a threat of terrorism in India, particularly in:

  • the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir
  • the State of Manipur
  • the State of Assam
  • areas of East India where Naxalites groups are active

Maoist extremist insurgents, known as Naxalites, are responsible for the majority of terrorist attacks in India. These groups are usually based in rural and forested areas within zones of concerns, as defined by the Government of India, which include:

  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Chhattisgarh
  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Maharashtra
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • West Bengal

Extremist and insurgent groups usually target government and security forces, and sometimes, trains and railway tracks. While tourists are not usually specifically targeted, bystanders could be affected. Be particularly vigilant during election periods and in the lead-up to, and during, religious holidays and times of national significance, such as:

  • Republic Day (January 26)
  • Independence Day (August 15)

Targets of terrorist attacks could include:

  • government buildings, including schools
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners

While in India:

  • always be aware of your surroundings when in public places
  • if you see a suspicious package, immediately leave the area and report it to authorities

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, is common. Criminals may target foreigners, especially in major cities and tourist areas.

  • Be vigilant in all crowded locations
  • Don’t carry large sums of money
  • Ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times

Petty crime frequently occurs on public transportation and overnight trains.

  • Ensure that the train compartment contains packages belonging only to you and other occupants
  • Store personal belongings in a safe place, and don’t leave the compartment unattended
  • Securely lock the doors

Serious crime against foreigners is less frequent, but incidents do occur.

Credit card and ATM fraud occurs. Be cautious when using debit or credit cards:

  • pay careful attention when your cards are being handled by others
  • use ATMs located in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business
  • avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
  • cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
  • check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements

Exercise caution in tourist areas and airports where scammers particularly target foreigners.

Scams involving the exportation of jewels, gemstones, carpets, and other items have occurred. Taxi drivers may approach you, offering money to export such items.

  • Don’t accept any offer, no matter how convincing
  • Beware of offers for cheap transportation or accommodation, extended taxi rides and unsolicited guided tours

Romance scams

If you’re travelling to India to meet someone you’ve otherwise only met online, you may be the victim of a scam.

Be alert to attempts at fraud by persons who profess friendship or romantic interest over the internet.

Investment scams

Unsolicited emails offering attractive business or financial opportunities are most likely fraudulent.

Don’t travel to India to obtain restitution after losing money to a scam.

Overseas fraud

Spiked food and drinks

Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum or cigarettes from new acquaintances. These items may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery.

Women’s safety

Crimes committed against women frequently occur in India. Foreign women are often the target of unwanted attention.

Staring, verbal abuse, groping, and other forms of sexual harassment can occur anywhere, including in tourist sites and areas. Attackers sometimes act as a group.

Reports of rape and assault against foreign women have increased. You should be particularly vigilant:

  • on all forms of public transportation
  • at Yoga centres, ashrams and other places of spiritual retreats

Local authorities may not always respond adequately to reports of sexual violence and harassment.

  • Avoid travelling alone, particularly at night
  • Be extremely vigilant on public transportation, taxis and auto-rickshaws
  • Be careful when dealing with strangers or new acquaintances
  • Be wary of accepting snacks or beverages from new acquaintances
  • Avoid less populous and unlit areas
  • Respect local customs and dress codes
  • Reach police immediately if you feel threatened

If you are the victim of a sexual assault, you should report it immediately to local authorities and the nearest office of the Government of Canada.

Advice for women travellers

Forced marriages

Forced marriage affecting foreigners occurs, sometimes without the affected person’s prior knowledge or consent.

Some Canadians have been forced into marital arrangements and have been detained against their will. They have been subjected to threats, intimidation and violence by family members.

If you’re in Canada

If you’re in Canada and you believe that you’re being forced to travel overseas to marry, you should call your local police for assistance.

If you’re in India

If you’re in India and you believe that you’re being forced to marry, contact the nearest office of the Government of Canada. You may also contact the Emergency Watch and Response Centre .

Family members may retain passports to prevent victims from returning to Canada. Keep digital or physical copies of your travel documents in a safe place.

General information and advice about forced marriage

Demonstrations and mass gatherings

Protests in manipur.

Violent demonstrations have been taking place in Manipur State since May 3, 2023, resulting in casualties. Protests have led to disruptions to traffic and public transportation. Curfews have been imposed in several districts and mobile and internet services may be limited.

If you are in Manipur:

  • monitor local media for the most recent information
  • follow the instructions of local authorities
  • be prepared to modify your plans in case of disturbances
  • expect enhanced security measures and an increased police presence

Demonstrations, mass gatherings, general strikes, “bandh” or “hartal,” take place frequently. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

Stampedes have occurred during mass gatherings, including religious ceremonies, and resulted in deaths and injuries.

Local authorities may impose curfews and other restrictions on short notice.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities, including curfews
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Road safety

Road conditions and road safety are poor throughout the country. Most roads, including major highways, are poorly maintained. There is severe traffic congestion. Driving conditions may be hazardous during the rainy season, and some roads can become impassable.

Drivers don’t respect traffic laws. They are often aggressive or reckless. Driving can be hazardous due to the presence of livestock or wandering cows, including in urban areas.

Fatal road accidents are frequent. They can lead to mob anger and assault.

  • Avoid travelling outside urban centres after dark
  • Avoid driving or riding motorcycles in India, even if you are an experienced motorcyclist
  • Be very careful when crossing the street, even at pedestrian crossings
  • If involved in an accident, contact local authorities immediately

Public transportation

India has an extensive passenger train system. Rail accidents are common, mostly due to poor maintenance. Thefts are frequent on certain train lines.

If you use a taxi, get it from a reputable hotel, an official taxi stand, or a trusted ride-sharing app. At the airport, use officially marked taxis or pre-paid transport services.

  • Negotiate fares in advance, or insist that the driver use the meter, as you may be overcharged
  • Avoid travelling alone, especially at night
  • Don’t share taxis with strangers

Maritime transportation

Maritime accidents occur regularly due to the overloading and poor maintenance of some vessels.

  • Don’t board vessels that appear overloaded or unseaworthy
  • Always wear a life jacket

Pirate attacks and armed robbery against ships occur in coastal waters. Mariners should take appropriate precautions.

Live piracy report - International Maritime Bureau

Water activities

Coastal waters can be dangerous. Riptides are common. Several drownings occur each year.

Beaches are not usually supervised by lifeguards. Many beaches don’t display warnings of dangerous conditions.

  • Seek local advice before swimming
  • Avoid swimming if red flags are flown
  • Avoid swimming during Monsoon season
  • Always wear a life jacket if you use a boat or a small embarkation

Water safety abroad

No commercial mountain rescue services are operating above 3,000 metres.

If you intend on trekking:

  • never do so alone and always hire an experienced guide from a reputable company
  • buy travel insurance that includes helicopter rescue and medical evacuation
  • ensure that your physical condition is good enough to meet the challenges of your activity
  • ensure that you’re adequately equipped and well informed about weather and other conditions that may pose a hazard
  • inform a family member or friend of your itinerary, including when you expect to be back to camp
  • know the symptoms of acute altitude sickness, which can be fatal
  • obtain detailed information on trekking routes or ski slopes before setting out and do not venture off marked trails or slopes

Wildlife viewing

Wildlife viewing may pose risks, particularly on foot or at close range. If you plan on visiting a wildlife area such as a tiger reserve:

  • always maintain a safe distance when observing wildlife
  • only exit a vehicle when a professional guide or warden says it’s safe to do so
  • only use reputable and professional guides or tour operators
  • closely follow park regulations and wardens’ advice

Large groups of monkeys are present in several parts of India, including some urban regions. Monkeys can get aggressive and rapidly overwhelm travellers in their search for food. They can also steal your belongings.

Be vigilant when in the presence of monkeys.

  • COVID-19 and International Travel - 13 March, 2024

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country   where yellow fever occurs.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.
  • Discuss travel plans, activities, and destinations with a health care professional.
  • Contact a designated  Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  well in advance of your trip to arrange for vaccination.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada * It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that can cause swelling of the brain.  It is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Risk is very low for most travellers. Travellers at relatively higher risk may want to consider vaccination for JE prior to travelling.

Travellers are at higher risk if they will be:

  • travelling long term (e.g. more than 30 days)
  • making multiple trips to endemic areas
  • staying for extended periods in rural areas
  • visiting an area suffering a JE outbreak
  • engaging in activities involving high contact with mosquitos (e.g., entomologists)

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Typhoid is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Travellers going to countries in South Asia should speak to a health care professional about getting vaccinated.

Malaria  is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is caused by parasites spread through the bites of mosquitoes.   There is a risk of malaria in certain areas and/or during a certain time of year in this destination.

Antimalarial medication may be recommended depending on your itinerary and the time of year you are travelling. Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic before travelling to discuss your options. It is recommended to do this 6 weeks before travel, however, it is still a good idea any time before leaving.    Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times:  • Cover your skin and use an approved insect repellent on uncovered skin.  • Exclude mosquitoes from your living area with screening and/or closed, well-sealed doors and windows. • Use insecticide-treated bed nets if mosquitoes cannot be excluded from your living area.  • Wear permethrin-treated clothing.    If you develop symptoms similar to malaria when you are travelling or up to a year after you return home, see a health care professional immediately. Tell them where you have been travelling or living.

In this destination, rabies is carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. Rabies treatment is often available in this destination.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals).

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Cholera is a risk in parts of this country. Most travellers are at very low risk.

To protect against cholera, all travellers should practise safe food and water precautions .

Travellers at higher risk of getting cholera include those:

  • visiting, working or living in areas with limited access to safe food, water and proper sanitation
  • visiting areas where outbreaks are occurring

Vaccination may be recommended for high-risk travellers, and should be discussed with a health care professional.

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is a viral disease that can cause fever, pain and bleeding under the skin.  In some cases, it can be fatal.  It spreads to humans through contact with infected animal blood or tissues, or from the bite of an infected tick.  Risk is generally low for most travellers.  Protect yourself from tick bites and avoid animals, particularly livestock.  There is no vaccine available for Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever.

Visceral  leishmaniasis   (or kala azar) affects the bone marrow and internal organs. It is caused by a parasite spread through the bite of a female sandfly. It can also be transmitted by blood transfusion or sharing contaminated needles. If left untreated it can cause death. Risk is generally low for most travellers. Protect yourself from sandfly bites, which typically occur after sunset in rural and forested areas and in some urban centres. There is no vaccine or medication to protect against leishmaniasis.

Lymphatic filariasis , also known as elephantiasis, is caused by filariae (tiny worms) spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can cause a range of illnesses. Risk is generally low for most travellers. Protect yourself from mosquito bites. There is no vaccine available for lymphatic filariasis although drug treatments exist.

  • In this country,   dengue  is a risk to travellers. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
  • Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue.

Zika virus is a risk in this country.

Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.

During your trip:

  • Prevent mosquito bites at all times.
  • Use condoms correctly or avoid sexual contact, particularly if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should discuss the potential risks of travelling to this destination with your health care provider. You may choose to avoid or postpone travel.

For more information, see Zika virus: Pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

There is a risk of Nipah virus infection in this country. Nipah virus infections can range from asymptomatic (no symptoms) to severe illness and death.

Nipah virus is spread to people from animals (such as fruit bats) but it can also be spread through contaminated food or close contact with someone who is ill.

Travellers to areas where Nipah virus is found should:

  • avoid consuming date palm sap products, including raw date palm juice
  • thoroughly wash and peel fruit before consumption
  • wash hands regularly with soap and water
  • discard fruit with signs of bites or fruit that has been found on the ground
  • avoid contact with fruit bats and areas where they are known to roost

For more information on preventing Nipah virus infection, visit Nipah virus: Prevention and risks .

There is no vaccine or medication that protects against Nipah virus infection.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Tuberculosis is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs.

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

Medical services and facilities

The quality of health care varies significantly throughout the country.

Medical care in major cities may be good, but it’s usually very limited or unavailable in rural areas.

Government hospitals provide free services or at a minimal cost. Private facilities often offer a higher level of care but can be expensive. Most hospitals require up-front payment or confirmation of insurance coverage before commencing treatment.

Specialised treatment for psychiatric illness may not be available outside major cities.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

Ambulances are often equipped with basic and old medical equipment.

Response times can be very slow. Traffic doesn’t yield to emergency vehicles.

In case of serious illness or injury, you may consider taking a taxi or private vehicle to go to the hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

Medical tourism

Some Canadian citizens have had severe health complications following cosmetic or other elective surgeries abroad.

Before leaving for medical travel:

  • make sure you have done your research
  • use competent health-care providers only

Indian family law is very different from Canadian law.

In case of dispute, consult a local lawyer to be fully aware of local laws regarding marital fraud, dowry abuse or extortion, custody, guardianship and visitation rights. Individuals facing charges may be forced to remain in India until their cases have been settled or charges dismissed.

Commercial surrogacy

If you’re planning to visit India to commission surrogacy arrangements, you should consider the potential challenges involved in pursuing international surrogacy. Seek specialist legal advice on Indian and Canadian laws before making any arrangements.

A proposed Indian government ban on foreign commercial surrogacy could affect Canadians travelling to India to enter into a surrogacy agreement.

You should also consult with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on current policies regarding citizenship through descent and the issuance of Canadian travel documents.

Land and property disputes

If you plan on buying property or are involved in a land dispute in India, you should seek legal advice. Do so before making commitments. Related disputes could take time and be costly to resolve.

The offices of the Government of Canada in India can’t provide assistance or legal advice related to private legal matters.

2SLGBTQI+ travellers

Standby Cruising: A New Option for Bargain Seekers

Are you a flexible traveler? Holland America’s standby cruises may be for you. The cost: $49 a day, excluding fees, taxes and extras. The catch: It might be a hair-raising, last-minute scramble.

A large cruise ship is situated in the middle of a calm, peaceful bay, surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

In February, Barb McGowan took a seven-day cruise on Holland America Line, visiting the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the Dominican Republic for just $343, or $49 a day, excluding taxes, port fees and extras. By comparison, Holland America currently lists a seven-day Caribbean itinerary in October from about $700.

The catch: She had just 48 hours’ notice.

Ms. McGown, a 64-year-old from Naples, Fla., who runs a restaurant franchise, took one of the line’s new standby cruises , which are aimed at travelers who live near departure ports and intended to fill ship vacancies.

“I look for deals, and this was an especially good experience,” Ms. McGowan said, praising the food and entertainment. “I was impressed enough to put down a deposit on a future cruise.”

A way to keep ships full

Holland America introduced its standby program last August to maximize ship occupancy, knowing that cancellations are inevitable. So far, the rest of the cruise industry has not followed its lead.

“If cancellations are within a week or two of sailing, it’s difficult to resell that space in the open market,” said Dan Rough, the vice president of revenue management at Holland America.

In the same way that airlines oversell seats, cruise lines may compensate for cancellations by overselling staterooms. Filling in with standbys, however, reduces Holland America’s reliance on overselling, which runs the risk of bumping passengers to distant departures or potentially offering generous cash incentives to coax volunteers to cancel.

Though the company does not heavily promote the new practice, it has attracted a following among the thrifty by dangling a bargain rate — $49 a person, whether sharing a cabin or traveling solo, before taxes and fees — on a web page that lists available departure dates to attract flexible travelers. Standbys should expect an inside cabin, according to the company, though ocean-view and veranda cabins have been assigned. (The company declined to say how many standby cabins it has offered.)

“Forty-nine dollars per person, per day is pretty exceptional,” said Colleen McDaniel, the editor of CruiseCritic.com , a website that reviews cruises, noting that the price covers all meals and entertainment. “You can’t find a cheaper rate at a land resort for what’s included.” (In 2023, the average nightly rate for a hotel room in the United States was nearly $156, according to STR, a data analytics firm that monitors the hospitality industry.)

To participate, travelers choose an itinerary from the standby list on the website — current embarkation ports include Boston; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Montreal; Quebec City; San Diego; Seattle; Vancouver, British Columbia; and Whittier, Alaska — and pay for the trip in advance by calling Holland America or booking through a travel adviser.

There are no refunds for standby cruisers who want to back out. However, if the gamble fails to pay off, and the cruise line cannot offer a cabin to someone on the standby list, it issues a refund.

The company says standby offerings are added on a rolling basis and usually lists itineraries within two to three months of departure. Current offerings include seven-day sailings in Alaska’s Inside Passage from April through September and seven-to-11-day trips cruising the coast of New England and Canada’s Maritime Provinces between May and October.

Proximity is a bonus

Standby cruisers don’t learn of their acceptance or denial until a week to two days before departure, complicating transportation arrangements.

“Last-minute airfare could offset the savings on a cruise,” wrote Crystal Seaton, the owner of Road to Relaxation Travel , a travel agency based in Raleigh, N.C., in an email. Though she has not booked a client on a standby sailing yet, she surmised that it is intended for travelers who can drive to a port.

“We were lucky; we found out Tuesday we were going on a Friday 3 p.m. sailing,” said Sheila Valloney, 66, of Clermont, Fla., who with her husband spent nine days aboard a Holland America ship in the southern Caribbean in February by going standby.

Before being cleared, she reserved a parking spot near the ship dock in Fort Lauderdale, which would have set her back about $6 if she canceled. She also kept their vacation clothes ready to go at the last minute for the three-and-a-half-hour drive to port.

Booking a refundable airline ticket — or at least one that guarantees a credit in loyalty points or cash in the event of cancellation — is one way travelers who must fly can take advantage of the deal.

For her standby sailing, Ms. McGowan drove 90 minutes from her home to the ship in Fort Lauderdale. But her travel companion was coming from Indiana, so when she joined the standby list a few months before the departure date, she booked her friend a Southwest Airlines flight using frequent flier points that would be refunded if the last-minute cruise didn’t come through.

Avoiding extra charges

Once on board, charges for extras like cabin upgrades, Wi-Fi, alcohol and shore excursions can inflate the bill, though the thriftiest travelers try to avoid them.

Ms. McGowan sprang for the $17.50-a-day charge for an upgraded drink package (basic nonalcoholic drinks are included in the cruise) and took one shore excursion, focused on coffee growing, which she deemed a good value at $89.

On their Caribbean cruise, the Valloneys asked around for recommendations for good beaches, where they went to relax on port days, and waited until they were on land to check emails, in order to avoid paying for Wi-Fi on the ship.

“We didn’t miss it at all,” Ms. Valloney said. “For beverages, we would wait until happy hour, when it was buy one, get one free.”

Will other companies follow suit?

To date, no other cruise lines have adopted standby programs.

Princess Cruises said it did not plan to offer cabins on a standby basis, but noted that it already offers last-minute deals , which tend to run about $50 to $60 per passenger per day. For example, a seven-day Alaska sailing from Vancouver to Anchorage departing on May 8 is listed at $399 a person in a double-occupancy cabin.

Several other major cruise lines did not respond to inquiries about potentially adopting standby programs, though operators like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line also offer last-minute deals on their websites.

“We would be surprised to see many mainstream cruise lines begin to adopt a similar model” to the standby system, wrote Kimberly Coyne, the head of sales and content strategy for Cruiseline.com , a cruise review site, in an email. She said the standby fares might be financially unsustainable for cruise lines and cited the potential that travelers might become too accustomed to late-booking deals.

More ways to save

With the recent surge in cruise bookings, companies are discounting less, said Ms. McDaniel of CruiseCritic.com.

She identified more reliable ways to get a deal compared with going standby, such as booking during “ wave season ,” a sales period that generally runs January through March, or taking a repositioning cruise, in which a ship relocates from one region to another seasonally. A repositioning itinerary might sail in the fall from Alaska to the Caribbean via the Panama Canal.

“It’s not unusual to see a repositioning cruise at less than $75 per night,” Ms. McDaniel, said, noting that other expenses such as an airline itinerary into one city and returning from another may cost more than a standard round-trip ticket.

Repositioning cruises tend to stop at fewer ports and add more shipboard enrichment programs, such as lectures and activities like cake decorating classes and craft spirits tastings.

“For a lot of people the ship is the destination and this is the perfect activity for people who like to be on the ship,” she said.

Air Canada's Checked Baggage Fees & Policies: Everything You Need To Know

Understanding airline baggage policies is essential for travelers to avoid unexpected fees and ensure a smooth journey. Air Canada , like most airlines, has specific rules and fees regarding checked baggage. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into Air Canada's checked baggage policies, including fees, allowances, and important guidelines, to help passengers prepare for their upcoming flights.

Checked baggage allowance and fees

Air Canada's checked baggage allowances differ based on the fare purchased, route, and travel class. According to Upgraded Points , checked bags must weigh no more than 50 lbs (23 kg) per item for economy class, or 70 lbs (32 kg) for business class. Furthermore, the bag must have a linear dimension (length + width + height) of under 62 inches (158 cm).

Checked baggage fees vary depending on factors such as fare type, destination, and frequent flyer status. Typically, passengers flying on economy class tickets are required to pay for checked bags, whereas higher fare classes or elite status may include complimentary baggage allowances. It's crucial for travelers to review their fare conditions and baggage allowance before booking to avoid unexpected charges at the airport.

All passengers in the premium economy, Premium Rouge, and business cabins are entitled to two checked bags each. In economy class, however, the checked baggage allowance depends on the route and fare, as detailed below.

Which Airlines Have The Most Generous Checked Baggage Allowances?

For flights between the US and Europe, Canada and Europe, as well as domestic US flights, one checked bag is allowed per customer, excluding those on Economy Basic fares. For flights between the US and Canada and the US and Mexico, one free checked bag is provided only for Flex and Comfort fares. Outside these fares, a $35 fee is applicable for the first checked bag, and $50 for the second.

Those on Latitude fares can bring along two checked bags, no matter the route. Similarly, Star Alliance Gold members can enjoy one free checked bag, regardless of the fare purchased. From the third bag onwards, passengers can expect to pay between $100 and $225 per item, depending on the route.

To avoid surprises at the airport, you can opt to prepay for baggage online or via the mobile app from 24 hours to 45 minutes (domestic Canada flights) or 60 minutes (all other flights) from the scheduled departure.

Special items and oversized baggage

In addition to standard checked baggage, Air Canada accommodates special items such as oversized baggage and sports and hunting equipment. However, transporting these items may incur additional fees or require advance arrangements. Passengers should familiarize themselves with Air Canada's policies regarding special items to ensure a hassle-free travel experience.

As per Air Canada , bags weighing between 50 lbs (23 kg) and 70 lbs (32 kg) are labeled as “overweight”, while bags measuring 63 inches (160 cm) to 115 inches (292 cm) are “oversized”. A fee of $100 is imposed on bags considered overweight and/or oversized.

When it comes to sports equipment, passengers must register their items at least 24 hours before their scheduled departure by contacting the airline’s reservation desk or their travel agent. Fees vary depending on the type of equipment: for example, a $50 fee per flight is applicable for bicycles, while surfboards, paddleboards, and wave skis will incur a $100 fee.

Like with sports equipment, passengers will need to register their hunting equipment no less than 24 hours before the flight and arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the usual check-in time. Antlers and horns are $150 to check in, while firearms are $50 per segment of the flight. For specific packing requirements for special items, you are advised to refer to the Air Canada website .

Traveling with pets in the baggage compartment

As for the other type of precious cargo – pets – Air Canada accepts dogs and cats in the baggage compartment. For travel within Canada or between Canada and the US, a $105 one-way fee is applicable, while all other itineraries will cost $270.

The animal must be kept in a carrier that is no larger than 115 inches (292 cm) in linear dimensions, with a maximum weight of 100 lbs (45 kg) for both the pet and kennel combined.

Your Stress-Free Guide To Traveling With Furry Friends

Other requirements include:

  • The cat or dog must be at least 10 weeks old and fully weaned.
  • A maximum of two pets (of the same species) can be allowed in the same kennel.
  • The carrier must be hard-sided, secure and leak-proof, and large enough for the pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

Key takeaways

To avoid inconvenience and unexpected fees, passengers should adhere to Air Canada's baggage policies and guidelines. This includes sticking to weight and size restrictions and planning ahead for special items.

Passengers are also advised to take note of itineraries that include travel with Air Canada’s codeshare partners. In such cases, the baggage policies of the other carrier may apply.

How To Upgrade To On Your Next Air Canada Flight

Understanding Air Canada's checked baggage fees and policies is essential for travelers to plan and budget for their trips effectively. By familiarizing themselves with the airline's guidelines, passengers can avoid surprises at the airport and enjoy a seamless travel experience with Air Canada.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse starts, reaches peak totality and ends today

By Sarah Maddox

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 3:25 PM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality .

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

Eclipse map of totality

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT.

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT.

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017.

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET.

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com .

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

Sarah Maddox has been with CBS News since 2019. She works as an associate producer for CBS News Live.
