Carnival Cruise from Galveston

What’s not to love about a cruise ship? You get to wake up to new colorful locations without having to drive or pass through gruesome airport screening at every destination. You get to disconnect from the world – even from the Internet if you choose to do so! You get to experience the joy of fine dining every night. And you’re caressed by a fresh breeze while lying on a lounge chair on the deck. You get to sing your heart out at night with the cast of professional performers in lively musical shows. You might even prove your brother wrong about your “two left feet” while dancing the “Electric Slide” at the command of your Cruise Director. (We see you MarQ !)

Now, let’s talk about our Galveston cruise journey. The good, the bad 😢 and the perfect.

Where do you park when you cruise from Galveston?

There are various options, including hotels that will let you park in their lots and take a shuttle to the port. We parked at a covered parking garage across from the cruise ship. We got there earlier than needed and paid $113.66 from Sunday to Saturday. We recommend that you make a reservation. You can do that here . The less stress you pack into your day of boarding your cruise, the better.

How was the onboarding process to your Carnival cruise from Galveston?

We were boarding the Carnival Dream. There were a lot of people already at the port and a pretty long line. We checked luggage first but I personally kept an over-the-shoulder bag with me. That was an unnecessary weight that I had to carry with me for a good hour or so. I suggest you check it all. They will then leave your luggage in front of your room door. Be sure to keep with you some essentials such as IDs, snacks for kids and water.

Any hiccups?

There was only one part that put a dent in our experience. Our lead photographer’s passport was expired. So we called Carnival’s customer support to find out exactly what he would need to board the cruise. They assured us he only needed a valid US ID, such as his driver’s license. “Just like at the airport.” This is not true, you need an additional proof of citizenship, such as his birth certificate. And we weren’t the only ones who were misinformed by customer service. Others were told they could take a photo of a particular document for verification purposes and/or print it out to use as evidence. This was not our case. Our photographer was not able to board the cruise. Did it sour the experience? Absolutely. Regardless, the rest of us decided to leave our troubles at the Galveston dock and embrace the rest of the adventure.

First impressions on board the Carnival Dream

Once you board the cruise ship your whole world changes. We took it all in knowing that this was going to be our home for roughly the next week. The lobby deck of the Carnival Dream was beautiful with tropical music running in the background and multiple seating areas, including a bar. Everyone greets you with a smile. The area you walk into is very close to the customer service area and elevators. You’ll also find the doors to “Encore!” the theatre where you’ll get to experience live shows throughout the week. Because my onboarding took a bit longer than expected, I was told I could head to my room drop off my things and come down for a security presentation at our *Muster Station. The station, which was preassigned on our check-in documents, is where you are assigned to go in the event of an emergency. Once I got that out of the way, I went up to the Lido deck to meet the rest of the crew to say goodbye to Galveston. I must admit, even after the onboarding experience “from hell,” the farewell was super incredibly exciting!

As a side note, make sure you follow A Texas Guide on  Instagram ,  TikTok ,  YouTube  or  Facebook for more footage.

*It is recommended to go to the Muster Station first.

What about your cruise ship rooms?

We decided to save a couple of hundred dollars by choosing rooms that were not on the balcony side. Did we feel we were missing out? I personally didn’t. I know I would have isolated from others a lot more if I got to see the sunshine from my room and that would have defeated the purpose of being there, documenting and being with friends and family. But I will probably try a balcony room next time. I was surprised at how comfortable the room was. The bedding was impeccable, the bed sheets were fresh, I had enough pillows to keep comfortable and the housekeeping crew did a wonderful job of sprucing up the room every day. And the bathroom, although small, was creatively planned to be all the space you need.

Which destinations did the Carnival Dream take you to?

Let’s start with our Carnival cruise itinerary, which consisted of the following:

  • Day 1 – Leaving Galveston
  • Day 2 – Fun Day at Sea
  • Day 3 – Costa Maya, Mexico
  • Day 4 – Belize City, Belize
  • Day 5 – Cozumel, Mexico
  • Day 6 – Fun Day at Sea
  • Day 7 – Back in Galveston. Go home! 🥲

Costa Maya, Mexico view at the port arriving from Carnival Dream Cruise

Let’s start with the first destination. How was Costa Maya?

Wow. Costa Maya is beautiful. We made sure we were up in the Sky deck as we docked into this beautiful Mexico destination. I couldn’t help but smile as the Carnival Dream made its way to the dock and embraced one of the most beautiful hues of blue I’ve ever seen on the ocean. It reminded me of the water at the island of Capri in Italy. As we walked through the long dock towards the port, we encountered a musician playing the harp, simply playing for tips. There were also trolleys that will take you from the dock to the port for tips as well, if you have any mobility restrictions, you are carrying more than you would like to because you are with your kids, or simply want to save your energy, that is an option.

Photo Op at Costa Maya Port – Carnival Cruise from Galveston TX

The port is beautiful if you decide you just want to stay in that area. You will find multiple photo ops. People are friendly. There are restaurants, a gorgeous pool you can use that has a view of the ocean, restrooms, shops, and piraña pedicures if you want pampering.

If you have not pre-purchased a tour through Carnival (which is always your best and safest option), you can purchase one there. One heads up: If you purchase as soon as you step into the dock, you will be paying a lot more.

Beach in Costa Maya Mexico

Beach in Costa Maya Mexico

Where do you go in Costa Maya if you did not purchase a tour?

The beach of course! One of our crew members had done some research on Costa Maya and found out that they would charge us $4 each for a taxi to go to the closest beach. So when they offered to take us to the beach for $50 at the beginning of the port, we cordially declined, and kept walking towards the end of the port area.

Here’s where we fell into a bit of a tourist trap. While getting to the cab area, there were some vendors who offered us a trip to beach for $15 that included a lounge chair, a margarita (a lemonade if you don’t drink), and wifi. We paid them, were given a branded wristband and they escorted to the cabs a few steps away.  We then proceeded to pay another $4 each in cash for the shared cab/van ride to the Costa Maya beach. We could have simply paid for the cab to get to the Costa Maya beach.

The drive to the beach takes you through some rural areas. You don’t see enormous resorts. A member of our crew sat up front and asked the cab driver about the area in Spanish. He was very friendly and gave us what became a guided tour of Costa Maya for the next 10-15 minutes. Once at the beach area, one of the vendors we purchased from took us to some lounge chair right in front of the beach. The wifi did not have signal and we were offered lemonade in lieu of margaritas. (We declined). I personally did not drink it as I was avoiding local water. The other crew members forgot about our no local water oath and drank them. Thankfully they were fine, although I am not recommending that you not do this. Please bring a water bottle with you if you decide to venture to the beach on your own.

Carnival Dream from Galveston TX at Costa Maya

View from the Costa Maya port to the Cruise Ships

How was the beach at Costa Maya?

Ahh. Soothing. You get to see such a serene view once you are there. You get to breathe in the salty air and you have the option of swimming. Once you find yourself on a lounge chair at the beach, you will have multiple local vendors come to you to sell you everything from massages to bracelets and sunglasses. They are usually very sweet and will move along with a simple, “No, thank you,” and a smile. We even ended up chatting for a while with one of them telling us about his journey and how he makes a living selling sunglasses.

We also chatted with a snowbird from Canada. He and his wife own a house in Ontario, which they Airbnb during the cooler months for income. They then find a short term rental at a fraction of the price in Costa Maya from November to May every year. They’ve been doing this since the 80s. It surely got our wheels turning and daydreaming of this work and play nomad life. Later we reflected on how grateful we are to live in the great state of Texas.

Ready for more of our Carnival cruise adventure? Stay tuned for Part 2 coming next week.

So for Galveston, theres an Early/Late line and an On Time line. There is someone there checking boarding passes and directs people to the appropriate line. This was at the end of July when we cruised Vista.

Enjoy your cruise!

I cruised last week and unaware of any early and late line. Two lines. One was already wound around out to the street. I asked if our boarding area or anything made a difference and was told nope. Not until you get upstairs and then they call by hc, then A01, A02 ...

Not a thing mentioned about early and late and I was in the 2nd mass pushing, not even lined up, just a mass waiting until they started our area after they finished first area.

They do call boarding in order upstairs.

That's so frustrating. My last cruise a few years ago they were good about checking boarding times. Was hoping it would be the same.

We also just got off the cruise this past Sunday.

We showed up at the port around 11ish.

The people working the front line ask what time is your boarding time. We said 12noon and where told to get into this line and not that line. When we where finally let in. It took less than 30 minutes from front door too getting on the ship. Very well organized.

The reason for the back up after 1ish was there was a computer issue that had them shut down for about half and hour causing the back up.

I think they checked the first line perhaps idk. I had to wait for the parking shuttle to drop me off. But I did arrive before my 1030 am time.

We also boarded at terminal 2, the boarding arm at terminal 1 is still broke. We got off at terminal 1, and they used 6 elevators to get us down to deck 0. Breeze had terminal 2. Carnival is sharing rcl terminal on Saturdays while rcl leaves on sundays.

The carnival employee organising debark had a swear word for Galveston and she said you would think they could order 2 of the part that keeps breaking.

SCBarker

I cruised out of Galveston earlier this month. There were 2 lines then. An early/late, and an on-time.

We left out of terminal 1. The elevated gangway was broke, so we checked-in as normal and routed upstairs through the process. Then we made our way down through the baggage claim area and boarded from ground level (deck 0), just like you were in a port of call.

We cruised out of Galveston in July, and I thought they were incredibly organized.

We had 10:30 - 11:00 appointment time, boarding group A02.  We arrived at approximately 10:25 and walked right up to the terminal.  There were no lines.  As we approached the terminal they verified our appointment time, and referred us to 2 lines (one for on-time appointments and one for people outside their appointment time).  Being on time, we walked right through stopping at 2 check points, but never enough people to form a line.

Once we got up to the boarding area (it was fairly crowded) we sat down in the first chairs we found, to try to figure out if they'd started boarding yet (they had not).

Within 5 minutes they called all passengers in suites to board first, next they started down the groups A01, A02, etc.

We cruised out of Galveston on the Breeze on 9/13. It was pouring down rain.  Our arrival time was 12:00.  We got there at 11:45 and anticipated waiting outside the terminal till 12 to get in line. At 11:45 we were told they were letting everyone check in regardless of arrival time so we got in line to enter the terminal.

This is different from our Feb 2020 cruise where they had two different lines. One for on time and one for early/late.

Possible difference was the rainstorm? They did have a rain delay in boarding due to lightning in the area.

I completely agree with firefly333. We boarded last Saturday and saw 2 lines. No difference. People with late boarding times where in line. They do call boarding numbers when they are ready to board and looked at boarding passes before you could get through.

There were 2 lines today.  An employee was checking our boarding passes and we were directed to get in the on time line (which we were). This line moved much faster than the early/ late line.  30 minutes from getting in line to walking on the ship.

Galveston is not consistent.  Sometimes you will be there and you get the impression it is the fist day on the job for all.  They do seem to have good excuses ready.  I have heard the computer glitz many times but if you look many are working on their computers.

We just got off the Breeze today.  We had a 10:30 boarding time and got there early at 9:30, so we were put in the "early/late" line.   Right around 10:00, they started letting us in and the process was very quick.  If I remember correctly, they started calling the sections right at 11:00.  We were told the capacity was around 70%, so embarkation and debarkation were much faster than normal.  We were able to get into our stateroom around 1:15 (maybe even a few minutes earlier) rather than than the expected 1:30 time.

11 Reason To Sail on Cruises From Galveston

I n no uncertain terms, a cruise port makes all the difference regarding your entire vacation. After all, the location of your departure sets the tone for your trip moving forward, determining which destinations you’ll reach once you’re on the high seas.

While specific destinations like Miami or Canaveral boast unique strengths, something might also be said for the Port of Galveston, Texas. A smaller port overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston may not be the largest or busiest destination from which to depart. Yet, there are plenty of amicable reasons to look into this idyllic Texan island for your next cruise-going experience.

1. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Disney Offer Cruises From Galveston

Looking at it plainly, Galveston has three cruise terminals making up its port. In contrast, far larger alternatives, like the Port of Miami, have eleven terminals. Because of this, Galveston unfortunately cannot house many of the industry’s prestigious cruise lines. However, the port’s terminals support several large-scale cruise corporations, with Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Norwegian, MSC, and Disney Cruises departing from Galveston regularly.

2. The Nearby Cruise Destinations Are Well Worth It

Admittedly, inevitable drawbacks are attached to cruises from Galveston. Considering how much farther west it is than ports in Florida or along the East Coast, most cruise lines out of Galveston cannot travel to their company’s private islands as many are in the Eastern Caribbean. However, Galveston’s location along the Gulf of Mexico has its distinct perks, including ready access to the Western Caribbean and parts of South and Central America. Though some guests might regret losing a chance at CocoCay, it’s hard to be upset when trekking along the shores of Mexico, Honduras, or Belize.

3. It’s Easier To Navigate Than Larger Ports

There’s no simple answer when it comes to determining the total cost of cruises from Galveston over any other port in the U.S. Like most ports, the final cost of the cruise depends on numerous factors, including the time of year you’re sailing, the location of your cabin, and the cruise line you plan on traveling with. However, the convenience of navigating the port itself makes Galveston a perfect option for anyone new to cruise vacations. Avoiding the large-scale crowds and tedious boarding lines as other major ports, Galveston remains a hassle-free destination for most novice travelers out there.

Baby, It's Cold Outside! 12 Warm Destinations to Escape to This Winter

4. galveston is conveniently located in the central u.s..

Given Galveston’s distinct location in eastern Texas , it’s one of the most readily accessible ports for travelers across the U.S. Located in the heart of America, travelers from the Western U.S. will have just as easy time reaching it as vacationers from the Midwest or East Coast. After all, who wants to sit on a lengthy plane ride to reach their port of call? Also, Galveston lacks the same high value of traffic as Miami or other popular ports, making it relatively hassle-free to reach.

5. The Port Terminal Is Reasonably Close to the Airport

Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport is the closest airport to Galveston. Roughly 41 miles northwest of the port, travelers can easily navigate from the airport to their cruise terminal in under an hour. Galveston is also close to several major cities, making it an option, albeit a farther one, for anyone flying into Austin or Dallas. However, given Houston’s short driving distance to Galveston, William P. Hobby Airport is your best bet for air travel.

6. The Boarding Process Is Quick and Seamless

As mentioned above, Galveston doesn’t have the same volume of passengers flooding through its port as Miami, Canaveral, or Port Everglades. As a result, boarding a ship is comparatively tamer—especially since the port opened up its third and latest terminal in 2022. Having been constructed in the past two decades and carefully refurbished, these terminals are in fantastic shape, making the onboarding process much more efficient for vacationers. The terminals also come equipped with innovative new features, with Terminal 3 offering mobile check-in and state-of-the-art facial recognition devices.

7. There Are Plenty of Hotels Nearby

Another notable feature of Galveston is the number of hotels near the port. (Because let’s face it: what’s more accessible than simply waking up, hopping in your car, and practically walking onto the ship without worrying about losing track of time?) What’s more, many of the hotels in the Galveston area have special offers for anyone traveling onboard a cruise ship. These offers include free or discounted parking rates and a helpful shuttle that ferry passengers back and forth from the hotel to the ship. While several hotels in Galveston have these amenities, some of the best include the Hilton Galveston Island Resort and the San Luis Resort .

8. Parking Is Easy

Don’t let Galveston’s size fool you—the port itself has plenty of options when it comes to parking. As previously suggested, anyone staying at a nearby hotel might want to consider leaving their car parked there and taking a shuttle, taxi, or Uber over to their terminal. Additionally, travelers can reserve a space in the port’s parking lot ahead of their trip. These parking spaces are safe and secure, and port employees will assist with any luggage brought aboard on cruises from Galveston.

9. Galveston Itself Is a Beautiful Place To Visit

The main reason we believe you should depart from Galveston on your next cruise is the opportunity you’ll have to see what it has to offer. Like most major cities, there’s plenty to do and see around town, with every prospective sight catering to travelers’ interests. For those interested in shopping, the Strand Historical District has plenty of independently owned stores that feature everything from odd tchotchkes to essential beach items. Galveston’s famous Moody Gardens is an educational park built around natural wonders such as exotic sea life, immaculate flowers, roaming monkeys, and sloths.

10. You’re Bound To Find Some Great Last-Minute Deals

As previously mentioned, Galveston is a more scaled-down port than Miami or Port Canaveral, but its three terminals still receive cruise ships constantly. Because of this constantly moving schedule, most travelers will find it incredibly easy to find last-minute deals on select cruises from Galveston—often days before the ship is booked to leave. Sure, it may not be practical for those traveling from longer distances to book something last-minute. Yet these last-minute deals are well worth it for anyone within a short distance of Galveston.

11. Galveston Is Steeped in Rich Maritime History

Galveston is a city rich in history, having first been settled by Indigenous Natives of the Akokisa and Karankawa tribes before the Europeans arrived in the 1600s. Over the next several centuries, Galveston became a hub for maritime trade, eventually attracting such notable figures as French buccaneer Jean Lafitte. All that being said, history buffs will delight at the chance to visit Galveston, taking in some of the numerous historical sights around town—like Lafitte’s personal hideaway at Maison Rouge or the Michael B. Menard House, named after one of Galveston’s original American settlers. Even those who don’t care for history will find these areas fascinating.

How these cruise passengers missed boarding, got stranded in Africa

Both Americans and Australians were left at port after an excursion ran long.

After what seemed like a dream trip, several American travelers were left stranded at port in West Africa mid-cruise while traveling from Cape Town, South Africa, to Barcelona, Spain.

Jay and Jill Campbell told ABC News Myrtle Beach affiliate WPDE that they were in the first week of a three week voyage aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines when they stopped just off the coast of West Africa.

The couple and others opted to tour the nearby island of São Tomé and Príncipe on the afternoon of March 27, and when the excursion ran late, they said they brought it to the guides' attention.

"We were like, 'our time is getting short,'" Jay Campbell recalled, at which point he said the guide let them know, "'No problem we can get you back in an hour.'"

Upon their return, the passengers said cruise officials refused to let them aboard the ship, even as the local Coast Guard had ferried the group to the anchored vessel.

"The harbormaster tried to call the ship. The captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL the customer service emergency number," Jay Campbell said. "They said the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is via email. They're not responding to our emails."

The Campbells say they were left stranded along with four other Americans and two Australians -- of whom one is a paraplegic, one has a heart condition and one is pregnant. Some did not have credit cards or medication that was left on board.

Cruise expert Stewart Chiron, known as The Cruise Guy, told ABC News that "the bottom line was, they were hours late, the ship was ready to go."

"More than likely that the anchor was already up, and the ship was already possibly moving," he said.

He continued, "Any operation at that point to get these passengers back on the ship would have caused tremendous delays, and safety would have been a major concern."

In a statement to ABC News, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines said, "On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time."

They continued, "While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship's intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel."

The spokesperson added that the passports for the passengers who did not return at the all aboard time "were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port, as per the regular protocol."

"Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call," they said.

The Campbells said that their eight person group spent 15 hours traveling through six countries in an attempt to rejoin the Norwegian Dawn ship in Banjul, Gambia, on April 1. However, the ship couldn't dock due to low tide, so they are now trying to get to Senegal where the ship is meant to dock on Tuesday.

The Norwegian spokesperson said, "Unfortunately the ship was unable to safely dock in the destination due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage. While we share in our guests' disappointment, this modification was made with great consideration for their safety and that of our crew, which is our top priority."

The cruise line contacted the guests "regarding this itinerary adjustment and provided them with authorization to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal on April 2, 2024."

In light of the "series of unfortunate events outside of our control," the spokesperson said Norwegian Cruise Lines "will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal" and are still in communication with the guests to provide additional information as it becomes available.

In a separate, unrelated situation that took place coincidentally on the same day of the voyage, the spokesperson said, "An 80-year-old woman was medically disembarked after being evaluated by our onboard medical team, who thought it best that she receive further assessment and treatment as needed from a local hospital."

"In instances such as these, as the guest was released from the hospital and in a coherent state, our protocol is to contact the guest directly, as we would not have the authority to share any medical details with anyone else without their expressed consent," the spokesperson added, saying they worked with the port agent to receive updates.

"The guest has since been escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, and then put in the care of airport staff to continue her journey to the United States, where she has now made a safe return," they said.
