California Through My Lens

Touring the Historic Casino on Catalina Island

The island of Catalina, off the coast of Southern California, has been a popular spot for weekend adventures for over a century. The iconic building, known as the casino, is one of the island’s most well known landmarks. The casino is not a casino in the traditional sense with gambling and such, but a gathering place for people with a movie theater and one of the largest circular dances floors in the world. While it is still open for movies and events during the year, you can also tour the casino daily as well. We went for a tour on a recent trip, and I have to say it was an enjoyable experience and one I highly recommend while on the island.

Getting There

casino tour avalon

To get to the island, you have to take a boat from either Long Beach or Dana Point. Once you get to Avalon, you will be able to see the famous casino building and can walk over to it for the tour.

casino tour avalon

We got there about 15 minutes before the tour started and paid to join it. There were only three other people with us on the tour, but it was a weekday, so I am not sure if it is more popular on the weekends.

casino tour avalon

Our tour guide started the one hour tour with some history on the large murals at the front of the Casino. These panels were designed by famous artist John Gabriel Beckman.

casino tour avalon

From there, we entered into the lobby and then moved into the fantastic movie theater. This theater was immaculate with a sizeable cylindrical ceiling that helped provide amazing acoustics and that the Radio City Music Hall in New York was based on.

casino tour avalon

We got to watch a short 15 minute movie while we were in the theater on the history of it, and it was a fun way to get a better understanding of the area and to experience seeing a movie there.

casino tour avalon

From the theater, we walked up to the second floor on the slanted cement pathways that resembled what you would find in a baseball stadium (the creator was William Wrigley Jr. from Wrigley Feild).

casino tour avalon

The next stop was a visit to the famous ballroom, and it was just as impressive as you would imagine.

casino tour avalon

The 20,000 foot circular ballroom is gigantic (it is the world’s largest circular ballroom), and I have to imagine the parties in here are pretty special.

casino tour avalon

The ceiling and chandelier are also impressive with an art deco style that I spent a lot of time admiring.

casino tour avalon

For our last stop on the tour, we got to go out on the balcony and overlook the city of Avalon.

casino tour avalon

It was a fantastic last stop as the views were awe-inspiring and were worth the price of admission for me. The tour guide gave us a lot of time to take photos out here before we starting walking back down to the lobby.

casino tour avalon

This is a great tour and a fun way to experience the history of Catalina Island. I highly recommend you go on it if you are into this type of thing and let me know what you think in the comments.

Olivia Rodrigo, Janet Jackson, Green Day and more: 23 summer tours visiting Missouri

casino tour avalon

Summer is time for so many delights, not least of which meeting your favorite musicians as they take to the road for sprawling tours.

In addition to the number of great shows coming to Columbia, household names and cherished indie acts will be packing up and taking their shows to Missouri. Here are just 23 of the tours worth catching in our state through August.

More: From Needtobreathe to The Steel Woods, these acts will play outdoor shows in Columbia

June 4: Noah Kahan at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre (St. Louis)

It's not "Stick Season" per se, but it is the right time to catch Kahan, one of our moment's most popular singer-songwriters. Ryan Beatty shares the bill. Tickets range from $310-$487.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

June 9-10: Sarah McLachlan at Starlight Theatre (Kansas City), St. Louis Music Park (St. Louis area)

Celebrating 30 years of her luminous record "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" — which houses signature songs like "Possession," "Hold On," "Good Enough" and "Ice Cream" — McLachlan will visit Missouri back-to-back nights. The wonderful Feist shares the bill. Tickets are $25.50-$105.50 in Kansas City, $36-$110 in St. Louis.

June 12: Jon Batiste at St. Louis Music Park

The Roots N Blues festival veteran, former Stephen Colbert bandleader, and Oscar- and Grammy-winning American treasure tours behind his "World Music Radio" album from last summer. Tickets range from $29-$125.

June 21: Janet Jackson at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre

A pop and R&B legend with too many hits to name, Jackson's "Together Again" tour is, in a way, her own Eras run. One of St. Louis' favorite musical sons, Nelly, will share the bill. Tickets run from $47 to $212.

June 23: The Flaming Lips at Uptown Theater (Kansas City)

Do you realize ... the Lips never fail to put on a Technicolor, mind-bending rock 'n' roll show? Hear one of the Midwest's great weirdo bands whenever you can. Tickets are $49-$79.

June 26: Kurt Vile at The Pageant (St. Louis)

The great shaggy dog of indie rock, Philly-area native Kurt Vile has crafted some of the best guitar jams of the past 15 years. Emily Robb shares the bill. Tickets range from $32-$35.

June 27, 28: Lyle Lovett and His Large Band at The Factory (Chesterfield), Uptown

You can't ever go wrong with Lovett, whose hall-of-fame caliber catalog stretches from wry and spry country ramblers to some of the best ballads you'll ever hear. Tickets are $69-$149 in Chesterfield, $49-$135 in Kansas City.

July 6: Iron and Wine at The Pageant

"Light Verse," the latest record from Sam Beam's Iron and Wine project is gentle and strange and sublime, a re-articulation of Beam's place among our best living songwriters. The dynamic Amythyst Kiah shares the bill. Tickets are $37.50-$50.

July 10: The Baseball Project at Record Bar (Kansas City)

A midsummer classic? Perhaps so, when this baseball-themed band featuring members of R.E.M. (Peter Buck, Mike Mills), Dream Syndicate (Steve Wynn), The Minus 5 (Scott McCaughey) and Filthy Friends (Linda Pitmon) pays a visit to the home of the Royals. Tickets are $29.

July 23: Alanis Morissette, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Morgan Wade at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre

Dubbed the "Triple Moon" tour, this bill revolves around Morissette, whose work seems as relevant as ever, but packs in a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer in Jett and the serious talent of Wade. Tickets are $37-$299.

More: Have a very '90s (and early aughts) summer with Goo Goo Dolls, The Fray, Blues Traveler

July 26: Olivia Rodrigo at T-Mobile Center (Kansas City)

Rodrigo is set to performe her "Guts" out on the tour named for her 2023 record, which yielded such smashes as "Vampire" and "Get Him Back!" PinkPantheress shares the bill. Ticket prices TBA.

July 27: Santana and Counting Crows at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre

Good songs seem to be the connective tissue between guitar god Carlos Santana's outfit and the resilient Crows; Adam Duritz and Co. remain tender road warriors after all these years, delivering their work with a painter's touch. Tickets range from $44-$200.

July 30: Red Hot Chili Peppers at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre

Feel both California's heat and cool washing over you as the legendary funk-rock hitmakers push into their fifth decade of music. Otoboke Beaver shares the bill. Tickets run from $83-$506.

July 30: Future and Metro Boomin at T-Mobile Center

Future and Metro Boomin didn't start the fire exactly, but "Like That," their recent collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, reignited a 21st-century rap beef. The pair's not one, but two collaborative records in 2024 propel them into this tour, which will no doubt feature a dynamic survey of their work together. Tickets are $44-$194.

July 30-31: Phish at Chaifetz Arena (St. Louis)

Fresh off playing Las Vegas' spectacular Sphere, the beloved jam band will venture on into the summer, playing — what will no doubt be — two nights that can never be repeated. Tickets are $78-$269.

Aug. 8: Jason Isbell at The Factory

A frequent visitor to Missouri — and to festivals such as the former Roots N Blues — Isbell remains at the head of the current class of American songwriters. His most recent record, last year's "Weathervanes," contains a generous handful of canonical cuts. Powerhouse singer Shemekia Copeland shares the bill. Tickets range from $59-$99.

Aug. 9-10: Blink-182 at T-Mobile Center, Enterprise Center (St. Louis)

The re-formed punks are older and wiser but, thankfully, no less funny or filthy. Blink excels at anthemic singalongs that bridge the gap between the serious and absurd. Pierce the Veil shares both bills; Hot Milk will also play St. Louis. Tickets range from $44-$250 in Kansas City, $35-$176 in St. Louis.

More: These 13 summer music festivals are within a day's drive of Columbia

Aug. 12: Childish Gambino at T-Mobile Center

Back on the musical tip — but for how long? — Donald Glover has promised new Childish Gambino albums that may just conclude the project. Which, of course, makes it a crucial time to hear the entertainment polymath perform his artful blend of pop, R&B and hip-hop. Pop phenom Willow Smith shares the bill. Tickets range from $99-$343.

Aug. 15: Green Day at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre

Showing off its staying power, the Bay Area pop-punk legends will play through not one, but two landmark anniversary albums: "Dookie" and "American Idiot." Rancid and The Linda Lindas share a stacked bill. Tickets range from $102-$510.

Aug. 17-18: Ben Folds at Gillioz Theatre (Springfield), The Factory

Gen X's piano man has revived his Paper Airplane Request Tour, in which fans can do just that — send their requests floating through venue space to the remarkable musical craftsman. Tickets are $42.50 to $122.50 in Springfield, $55-$115 in St. Louis.

Aug. 20-21: Zach Bryan at T-Mobile Center

One of the most significant names in country music today, Bryan tours behind, well, his name — the self-titled 2023 album that landed him on numerous year-end lists and earned him a Grammy for his duet with Kacey Musgraves. Levi Turner and Matt Maeson round out the bill. Tickets are $54-$320.

Aug. 23: Dierks Bentley at T-Mobile Center

Now something like an elder statesman of country, Bentley has been one of the genre's most consistent — and stylistically interesting — hitmakers for more than 20 years now. The Arizona native will bring Chase Rice and Tanner Usrey out to Missouri with him. Tickets range from $25.75 to $115.75.

Aug. 23: Waxahatchee at The Pageant

Now calling Kansas City home Waxahatchee leader Katie Crutchfield will play the other side of Interstate 70, touring behind "Tigers Blood," far and away one of the best records of 2024's first half. Terrific songwriter Tre Burt shares the bill. Tickets are $35-$50.

Jennifer Lopez deal for $1M-per-show Las Vegas residency in jeopardy as new album, concert tour flop: source

J ennifer Lopez was recently in talks for a $90 million Las Vegas residency — but the blockbuster deal now looks shaky at best as her new album and upcoming concert tour are flopping badly, The Post has learned.

The embattled pop diva — whose headline-grabbing marriage to Ben Affleck is reportedly crumbling — recently had been in talks with MGM Grand on a guaranteed $1 million a show for 90 dates starting next year, a source close to the situation told The Post.

But casino executives have lately grown skittish over abysmal ticket sales for her first tour in five years following the release of her “This is Me … Now” album in February — with poor demand having forced the cancellation of seven shows this summer, the source said.

No Vegas deal has yet to be announced. That’s despite a report from The Mirror on Feb. 2 that MGM had teamed up with Live Nation to offer more than $800,000 a show.

Rival casino Resorts World upped the bidding to $875,000 per show in partnership with Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) soon after, sources said.

MGM and Live Nation then swooped in with the $1 million-a-show offer for the “Let’s Get Loud” singer — but buyer’s remorse has lately set in, the first source said.

“MGM is watching her not doing well on the road. They are very nervous,” the person said. “It’s pretty rare you have a poor tour and then go to Vegas.”

  • Jennifer Lopez gives brutal response to question about Ben Affleck split rumors

Now, the Bronx-born star could be looking at a significant haircut to the $90 million windfall. A Lopez residency should fetch just $600,000 to $650,000 and be for fewer shows, the source said.

Another source with knowledge of the MGM talks said no deal was ever signed, but discussions have continued.

Reps for Lopez and MGM did not comment.

The latest album was the worst selling of Lopez’s career and a companion film on Amazon Prime Video was panned. Ticket sales for the concert, which kicks off next month, are poor and her love affair with Affleck is apparently on the rocks.

The couple has rarely been seen together in recent weeks and he failed to show up for the premiere of her new film “Atlas,” which debuted on Netflix on Friday — and which The Post gave a one-star review.

MGM brass are worried about Lopez’s fading star power and whether she’ll be able to fill its 5,200-seat Park Theater to justify the massive financial commitment, the source said.

Lopez is having trouble filling the 19,500-seat T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the tour stop on July 20, with a third of the high-priced floor tickets and plenty of cheaper options — some as low as $65 — still available, Ticketmaster shows .

Seven tour dates in cities including Atlanta, New Orleans and Houston were scrapped, Variety reported .

The Live Nation-produced tour concludes Aug. 17 at Madison Square Garden in New York City and the residency was expected to begin about six months after the tour ended, the first source said.

J.Lo and her manager Benny Medina began shopping for a Vegas venue before the singer dropped her new album and a companion film on Feb. 16, the source said.

Lopez was a good bet for a casino in the past. Caesars paid her about a guaranteed $500,000 a show for a Planet Hollywood residency that ran for 120 shows between 2016 and 2018.

It grossed $101.9 million, making it the sixth highest Las Vegas residency of all time, and the top residency by a Latin artist, according to Billboard .

MGM is paying Mariah Carey just $500,000 a show for her current residency. Giving Lopez twice that amount would put her in the same ballpark as recently signed deals for Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga.

Adele got a record-breaking $2 million a show at Caesars Palace, The Post reported exclusively last year.

It was a chilly day, so he provided blankets in the Jeep. He was an excellent driver who had a great sense of humor, vast knowledge of the landmarks and terrain, shared very detailed historical information, explained the Catalina island ecosystem regarding the endemic and invasive species and recommended a related video about the Channel Islands (which we watched when we got home and enjoyed). It was a fun, memorable excursion for our family and I highly endorse it. Thanks to Halvy's determination, we saw several bison. After the tour, we ate at an authentic Mexican restaurant, Coyote Joe's, which he recommended and the food was delicious. Five out of five stars! Read more Written May 9, 2024

I've been to California manay many times but only to cities - San Diegi, San Francisco, LA - and never here. Coming to the island the view reminds me of Cinque Terra in Italy. The little town itself is great - lots of shops, restaurants. The people there were especially friendly, welcoming and happy to answer what I'm sure must be the same questions again and again! Love that there are buffalo on the island. Interesting history. Would love to return for a visit. Read more Written May 7, 2024

It took me forever to step off the platform on the second zip line and Abby was patient and kind and supportive And ultimately encouraged me to take the step and I’m so glad I did! BREAKING NEWS: Former President Donald Trump is convicted of all 34 counts in his New York hush money trial

He was the lead guitarist of the legendary rock band KISS. Now, he’s bringing his solo tour to this popular spot just outside the DC area

He shredded legendary rock riffs as the iconic lead guitarist of the classic metal band KISS.

Now, Ace Frehley bring his solo tour to Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races on Saturday, June 15.

“I’m not slowing down at all — if anything, I’m accelerating my career at this juncture in my life,” Frehley told WTOP. “Of course, I’ve got to do songs like ‘New York Groove.’ … You will hear me perform ‘Rock & Roll All Nite,’ you’ll hear me perform ‘Cold Gin,’ ‘Shock Me,’ ‘Rip It Out,’ all of the classic KISS songs, plus we’ll be doing ‘10,000 Volts’ off of the new album and ‘Cherry Medicine’ off of the new album.”

His latest album “10,000 Volts” (2024), released back in February, includes such out-of-the-world song titles as “Walkin’ On The Moon,” “Up In The Sky” and the instrumental final track “Stratosphere.”

“The reaction to this new album has been phenomenal,” Frehley said. “[‘10,000 Volts’] I wrote with Steve Brown. … On most of these songs, Steve brought me the music, I’d end up doing a guitar solo, doing the lead vocals and writing most of the lyrics. He engineered the whole record with me and it’s just a pleasure working with this guy. … [‘Up in the Sky’], if you listen to the lyrics, it’s so obvious I’m talking about UFOs. … I’ve seen three in my lifetime.”

These extraterrestrial references reflect his lifelong passion for science-fiction, which he’s enjoyed since he was a kid growing up in the Bronx in the ’50s. Frehley got his first guitar as a Christmas present at the age of 13.

“I never went to college, I never took a guitar lesson, it just manifested,” Frehley said. “I grew up in a one-bedroom apartment in the Bronx and used to be in a street gang called ‘The Ducky Boys.’ … What were the odds of me becoming one of the most famous guitar players in the world? Probably one in 100 million? But it happened.”

In 1973, he formed KISS with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and Peter Criss, becoming famous for high-energy shows with the band wearing costumes and face paint. Frehley not only designed the band logo with double lightning bolts, he also created his own “Spaceman” persona (a.k.a. Space Ace) with silver stars over his eyes.

“We used to play at this club on Long Island called ‘The Daisy’ when we were formulating the makeup designs,” Frehley said. “We were experimenting. One night, I had come out with my whole face silver, I think Paul’s face was all red, but Gene pretty much started that demon thing. All the makeup has evolved over the years. When you look at my makeup on the first album cover, everything is just silver around my eyes, then I started doing dark around my eyes, then when I got the cape outfit with the mirrors on it, I decided to put blue eye shadow around my eyes.”

Two years later, the band delivered its most famous hit “Rock & Roll All Nite” (1975).

“I’m actually performing it again live, it’s in my set,” Frehley said. “You will hear me play ‘Rock & Roll All Nite,’ a new addition. I was speaking to some friends of mine; in fact, it actually may have been Steve Brown, who coproduced the record, and he recommended it, he said, ‘You know, Ace, ‘Rock & Roll All Nite’ is one of the most popular songs on Spotify as far as KISS songs go, it has one of the highest downloads.'”

Another one of his most famous riffs comes on “Detroit Rock City” (1976).

“I love that solo that me and Paul used to do, the harmony, but I don’t believe in taking credit for anybody else’s ideas — that was Bob Ezrin’s idea, that melody,” Frehley said. “He told us exactly what to play and told Paul what the harmony was. Things happened very spontaneously those days.”

Ironically, he does not like performing “I Was Made for Loving You” (1979), even though it was a huge hit at the time and was recently featured in the movie “The Fall Guy” (2024) starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.

“‘I Was Made For Loving You’ is one of my least favorite songs to perform because my wrist cramps up,” Frehley said. “I know it’s one of our biggest hits, but I didn’t like the fact that it was disco rock. I’m really more hard core, I’m a blues-based rock guitar player and I like heavy metal. I would have never written a song like that and I don’t believe Gene would have either. … It’s not a bad song, I just don’t think it fits with KISS, just like ‘Beth’ didn’t.”

After his debut solo album “Ace Frehley” (1978) went platinum, he officially left KISS in 1982 to record two albums with a new band, the cleverly-titled “Frehley’s Comet,” before cranking out a dozen solo albums since.

Known for his array of “special effects,” including guitars shooting smoke, flashing lights and spinning pyrotechnics, Frehley was recently ranked in the Top 15 of Guitar World’s “100 Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists of All Time,” while his solo on “Shock Me” (1977) was included in Guitar World’s list of the “50 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time.”

Still, his favorite accolades come from fellow guitarists, from Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) calling Frehley his “first guitar hero,” to the late Dimebag Darrell (Pantera) getting a tattoo of Frehley on his chest.

“My peers like John 5 or Slash, who’s a dear friend of mine, or Mike McCready from Pearl Jam, those guitar players come up to me and say that I influenced them,” Frehley said. “For almost every band that was younger than me when KISS came out, broke and became one of the biggest bands in the world, that album ‘Alive’ is like their Bible of learning how to play rock guitar, at least that’s what I’ve been told. … If I’m influencing somebody, that’s great.”

This year also marks the 10th anniversary of KISS being inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. The legendary band just went on its farewell tour last year, but at age 73, Frehley is still playing his face off with solo tours.

“Now, on top of influencing guitar players, I’m also influencing people to get sober because I’ve been sober over 17 years,” Frehley said. “When I do meet-and-greets backstage, a lot of them will show me their [Alcoholics Anonymous] coin and say, ‘Hey, I got sober because of you. I figured if Ace Frehley could get sober, I could.'”
