20 Cheap and warm places to go over 2023 Christmas & New Years weeks

As of summer 2023, travel around the world is way up and it’s looking like the Christmas and New Years holiday seasons in 2023 are going to be the busiest in many years. If you are looking for a cheap place where you can relax in the sun or on the beach, we’ve got 20 great options for you below. The cheapest ones are all in Asia and near the bottom of the list. It could be worth the longer flight if you’ve got at least a week because you can often stay in an amazing 4-star beach resort in some Asian cities for less than the cost of a Motel 6 in Florida around Christmas.

We check hotel rates each year and some places are a bit higher this year while others are about the same and a few places on the list are actually looking a bit cheaper than they did in 2022. We checked prices for the week starting December 24 through 31 and used the nightly average including all taxes and fees for two people. Again, there are some amazing bargains down the list, and some really good bargains near the top as well.

Myth: Hotels are cheaper in countries that don't observe Christmas

A huge majority of the people who are well off enough to fly internationally are those living in countries that have a Christmas holiday, and that’s no secret to hotel owners. In other words, hotels in Thailand, Indonesia, Egypt, and India all raise prices for stays during those key holiday weeks because they know those are the most popular weeks of the year for their businesses. The good news though, is that those countries still offer great bargains compared to, say, Hawaii, which goes off the charts during Christmas week.

When to book a sunny Christmas or New Years holiday trip:

As soon as possible

There is all kinds of research showing the  cheapest time to book flights  and even research showing that hotel prices often drop a month or two out, but the key exception to both of those is around big holidays like Christmas. Suppliers do adjust prices as the months come and go, except for when they know they’ll have no trouble filling up even at the last minute. The  best December destinations in Asia  contains many great beach choices that are cheaper than most of the rest of the world.

When to book your flights:

The research shows that flights for key holiday periods start off at normal levels and then they just keep going up as seats are sold and the date approaches. There are no last-minute deals on flights just before or after Christmas, at least to and from  sunshine destinations .

The 2023 December holiday period is looking like it’s going to be the busiest and strongest since at least 2019 and probably before that as well. Booking hotels early should be wise advice this year again, and remember that most hotels offer free cancellation until shortly before the stay so there isn’t much risk.

When to book your hotels:

Bargains are possible at the last minute, but it’s risky

The best and most popular beach resort hotels will usually only have a few rooms left by early December, and they will price those high enough that most people will look elsewhere. But some other hotels can be too optimistic in pricing so they have to cut rates in December just to fill up. In other words, you shouldn’t really count on an appealing rate at a specific hotel where you are going, but there’s a decent chance you could still get a decent rate if you are flexible enough to accept something nearby.

Once again in 2023 it could be good to look into Airbnbs and other short-term rentals. Some markets have far too many listings for the demand and you might find bargains as the holidays approach if some owners priced their listing too high and will want to at least book up at a lower rate rather than sit empty during the busiest week of the year.

Again, the airfare portion of a holiday trip is almost certain to get more expensive as the year goes on, so a hotel+flight package will generally just keep going up in price as well.

Particularly to places like the Caribbean, Mexico, and Thailand with huge numbers of package visitors, you’ll almost certainly get the best rates in addition to the widest choices the earlier you book.

Cheap and warm destinations for Christmas and New Year holidays

Obviously “cheap” is a relative term, but these are the cheapest holiday resort areas around the world that also have warm and sunny weather in late December and early January.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

• December average high: 86°F/30°C
• December average low: 64°F/18°C

The weather during Christmas time is pretty much perfect for anyone wanting to escape the cold, and the large international airport also has good deals on flights from many North American cities as well. Puerto Vallarta has grown more popular lately, especially with Americans and Canadians, so it’s not as cheap as it used to be, just like everywhere else.

Hotel rates in 2023 are looking much higher than in 2022, but still good value and many great places available. Booking as soon as possible is probably wise.

Los Cabos, Baja California, Mexico

• December average high: 80°F/27°C
• December average low: 58°F/15°C

If you want to take boat tours and such, or if you like to hop around between restaurants and bars, it’s best to stay somewhere close to the marina in Cabo San Lucas. But if you prefer a quiet place where you mainly stay at a resort with its own restaurants and bars, you are better off between the two towns or in San José del Cabo itself.

Hotel rates start at bargain prices considering how nice the area is. It can get a bit chilly at night around Christmas time, although plenty of people actually prefer that to the tropical climate where it’s hot day and night. And the slightly cooler weather will fit in more with the Christmas lights, Christmas trees, and holiday spirit than some of the Caribbean islands lower on this list.

The 2023 Christmas hotel rates are similar to 2022 in the Cabo area so there are some good bargains still available to those who book early.

Cancún/Cozumel/Riviera Maya, Mexico

• December average high: 84°F/29°C
• December average low: 69°F/21°C

The area is getting more and more all-inclusive resorts and those range in quality from disgraceful to amazing, so it’s important to do your research and be careful about any beach hotel offering a suspiciously good deal. Cancun is home to some of the Caribbeans best all-inclusive resorts in general, but don’t expect very low prices on those.

The weather in late December is predictably perfect with barely a chance of a quick thunderstorm, much less anything worse. With so many hundreds of hotels competing for business, holiday room rates for well under US$100 per night are easy to find. Package deals to Cancún are very popular, and probably the best deal for those who book early. As you can see by the room rates below, there is a huge difference between 3-star and 4-star properties in this area. A 3-star can be just a normal hotel room in the city, while the 4-stars are all wonderful resorts with pools, usually on the beach. In other words, you will generally get what you pay for, so a hotel that charges twice is much is almost always MUCH nicer.

Hotel rates in 2023 look the same or a bit lower than they did in 2022, but that could change as December gets closer. As mentioned above, Cancun is a HUGE area and location is critical or at least it helps explain why some places are double or triple the price of others even though they look the same on the Expedia listings. Punta Cana / Puerto Plata , Dominican Republic

• December average high: 83°F/28°C
• December average low: 72°F/22°C

The weather and resort prices are similar in both places in late December, so either one would be a fine choice for someone looking for a cheap and warm place to spend a week. You’ll find that flight+hotel package prices are especially appealing to the DR, and those who book early will usually get the best deals.

The 2023 Christmas week rates are looking really good for those who book early. Room rates are similar to what we saw last year when we updated for 2022, while many other places have jumped in price this year. The best values in Puerto Plata are for 4-star all-inclusive resorts, which are often only a bit more expensive than those that only include breakfast.

Montego Bay / Ocho Rios / Negril , Jamaica

• December average low: 70°F/21°C

All three towns have a different vibe, so it’s really only the weather and most prices that are similar. Along with the Cancun area and the Dominican Republic, these Jamaican resorts are also known for all-inclusive resorts and appealing package deals. Even during the peak holiday months, it’s possible to lock in an appealing deal if you book early enough.

The 2023 room rates for Christmas week are similar to the 2022 rates when we researched, which is good when so many other places have gone up in price. As always, it is probably wise to book early because rates usually go up as each month goes by.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Especially if you are going to stay for more than a week, it pays to look into an apartment rental instead of a hotel. There is an abundance of nice apartments in the tourist area that are rented out most of the year. If you are staying for a month, you can get an amazing deal compared to a hotel. San Juan was famously hit hard by storms in 2017, but as of 2022 nearly everything is open and ready for you.

Room rates for San Juan in 2023 for the holiday week are looking similar to the 2022 rates. You’ll notice that rates for 3-star places and 4-star places are very different in this market because 4-star places are almost all large resort hotels on the beach while 3-star places are often family run and can be a few blocks away.

Ambergris Caye/Caye Caulker, Belize

• December average high: 81°F/27°C
• December average low: 68°F/20°C

Belize is (more or less) an English-speaking country, and these islands both have a bit of a Rastafarian feel in places, so it’s an interesting mix of culture and convenience. Nearly all 4-star hotels here start over US$200 per night for the holiday weeks, but there are 3-star bargains nearby in addition to holiday villas for rent for those with higher budgets.

Belize room rates in 2023 are looking similar to last year for 3 star hotels but a bit higher for 4-star hotels. If you enjoy staying in smaller family-run hotels you can save quite a bit of money and maybe make some new friends in the process.

Roatán Island, Honduras

• December average low: 75°F/24°C

Honduras is a Spanish-speaking country, though especially with the recent influx of cruise-ship crowds here, it’s very easy to get by in English only. There are only about 60 hotels on the island at this point, and holiday rates are still surprisingly reasonable considering what is on offer. Still, booking early is probably wise.

This is another destination where there is a huge gap between the 3-star hotels and the 4-star resorts on the beach, which means you can save a lot of money if you don’t require an actual ocean view from your bed. The 2023 room rates are up from last year so if you see a place you like it’s probably worth booking it early.

Tamarindo/Guanacaste, Costa Rica

• December average high: 90°F/32°C

Most of this northwestern area is new and quite luxurious, so 4-star resorts and rental properties aren’t much cheaper than in Hawaii, but there are still some really good 3-star bargains. Nosara is another small town in the area that doesn’t feel quite so mass-market compared to Tamarindo.

It’s important to note that the smaller and cheaper hotels here with reasonable prices will feel like you are visiting a somewhat exotic part of the world, while the 4-star chain resorts on the beach will feel much more like home for most guests coming from the US and Canada. The 2023 room rates are showing an even larger split between cheap 3-star places and the posh and more expensive 4-star beach resorts.

Panama City, Panama

It helps if you know at least a bit of Spanish, but even those who don’t can find plenty to do here to keep them busy. The city has a few large shopping malls in the tourist area, so it could be a good place to do some Christmas shopping or just hanging around. The restaurant scene here is notoriously good as well.

The 2023 room rates for Panama City are looking similar to last year and very appealing. In fact, if you would like to stay in a very nice resort hotel with at least a pool if not a beach, Panama City is one of the cheapest places to do that. The most interesting resorts are in the San Blas Islands in the Caribbean, so that’s another place to consider.

Cartagena, Colombia

• December average low: 76°F/24°C

Not only is Cartagena popular with international tourists in the winter months, but domestic Colombian tourists taking their holidays as well. So you won’t be avoiding the crowds here, but at least it’s one of the more affordable sunshine destinations in the region. The 4-star hotels along the beach just west of the historic center are some of the best Christmas season bargains going. Speaking at least a bit of Spanish is helpful.

The 2023 rates look really appealing for those who can book early. It’s important to note that this is one of the very few places in the western hemisphere (along with San Juan, Puerto Rico) where you can stay in a gorgeous, historic city with great restaurants and entertainment, and also be on a nice tropical beach in less than a 10-minute taxi ride. The beaches aren’t white sand, so not quite as photogenic as most of the others on this list.

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

• December average high: 71°F/22°C
• December average low: 61°F/16°C

Partly because it’s not really a great beach season, hotels in Tenerife are still quite cheap during the Christmas holiday period. Most everything else is quite affordable as well, at least compared to where you live now. Especially if you are looking for a place with reasonable airfares from elsewhere in Europe, this could be a good choice. The area around Los Cristianos and Playa de la Americas is the easiest for English speakers, and it has the most consistent warm weather as well.

The 2023 room rates for Tenerife are actually a bit down compared to 2022, so if you are able to book in July or August you can lock in a great rate. Expect to see a lot of northern Europeans all winter here.

Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt

• December average high: 74°F/23°C
• December average low: 59°F/15°C

Egypt had some security issues a few years ago and they kept almost everyone away for a while to the point that beach resorts were literally charging under US$30 per night for two people. The country has not had any such issues in several years now and the European visitors are coming back.

Sharm el-Sheikh room rates in 2023 are down a bit compared to what we saw in 2022. It’s hard to say whether they’ll stay down, but if you can book something early you can lock in an amazing deal for a beach resort with a great climate.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

• December average high: 79°F/26°C

It’s worth noting, however, that the nicer and better located hotels in Dubai will cost at least two or three times the minimums mentioned below. Those on lower budgets can get by pretty well here, but that’s not to be confused with the luxury market and beach hotels that rival top room rates anywhere on earth.

The 2023 hotel scene is very encouraging once again. Rates for this December are looking fairly cheap, but again, the fancy places and those in the prime locations will cost at least double these rates.

In other words, it pays to do some research before choosing a beach hotel here because most of them won’t be suited to you. Room rates are quite reasonable even during this busiest time of year, although it’s important to note that the cheapest hotels in Goa (and all over India) tend to be disappointing and rarely worth the savings. Still, the 4-star hotels in Goa are mostly quite good, and excellent value at Christmas time.

The 2023 hotel situation in Goa looks kind of a mixed bag, but rates are still very cheap compared to almost anywhere else in the world. Again, choosing the right hotel in India can be a challenge because there are hundreds of cheaper places that get very few reviews on the main hotel-booking sites like Expedia or even Agoda. If you can find a nice one you can save a lot of money, and they do exist (I’ve stayed in quite a few in Goa myself), but if you want to play it safe you’ll be paying a bit more.

George Town, Penang, Malaysia

• December average high: 88°F/31°C
• December average low: 74°F/23°C

The cheaper hotels in the area are those in the historic center of Georgetown, while the beachfront resorts are going to cost quite a bit more. Avoid the cheapest hotels here and pay close attention because most of the cheapest rooms have no windows at all. Still, there is great value here, particularly in the food scene. Penang is known as the culinary capital of Malaysia, with an abundance of cheap and cheerful food courts in addition to some notable fine dining.

The 2023 hotel rates over Christmas look really cheap for those who can book early. Rates are even down a bit on 2022, which is a relief. If you can only stay a week it’s probably worth booking a nicer place with lots of great reviews, but if you are staying a few weeks you might try to experiment with a more affordable place, knowing you can switch easily if you aren’t happy.

Phuket, Thailand

Karon and Kata are nearby beach areas that are at least a little more serene, and there are several other enclaves of upmarket luxury hotels and resorts. This has been a very popular Christmas destination for northern Europeans for decades, and yet it’s still quite affordable even during its peak season. Hotels on or near the beach are going to cost quite a bit more than the prices listed below, but those who don’t mind walking a bit can get great value even at Christmas here.

The 2023 Christmas hotel rates are once again, shockingly low, at least for the simple places. There are so many independent hotels on this island that competition is fierce for guests. Room rates for international chains such as Hilton and Marriott are going to be MUCH higher, although still cheap by international standards.

Hoi An/Da Nang, Vietnam

• December average high: 77°F/25°C
• December average low: 67°F/19°C

Hoi An has been a favorite among visitors to Vietnam for decades, while Da Nang is more of a newcomer after it’s built a string of large beachfront hotels meant for foreign guests. Vietnamese food has a large cult following around the world, and both of these towns have an abundance of great and affordable restaurants serving several varieties. This is one to think about if it feels like you’ve been everywhere else.

The 2023 hotel rates continue to be insanely cheap, at least for the smaller places in and near Hoi An itself. You can still book a beach hotel with an ocean view along the Da Nang beaches for cheap, but it’ll be more than for the family-run places.

Bali, Indonesia

• December average low: 76°F/26°C

The most crowded and popular area is the famous surf beach along Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak on the west coast, but there are many lower-key beach areas in addition to Ubud a bit up in the central hills. Well-heeled visitors might also consider the tourist zone of Nusa Dua in the south, which is filled with large chain hotels that are often loaded with honeymoon couples.

The room rates for 2023 are up a bit from 2022, but still ridiculously cheap considering how nice most of these places are. Bali has so many hotels that you can probably get a good deal even close to the last minute, but it still might be worth locking in a great place if you find one you like.

Boracay Island, Philippines

• December average high: 82°F/28°C

There are no super-cheap hotels on Boracay Island, but that’s mainly because every hotel is within 100 meters or less of the sandy beach. There are many choices of international cuisine here, including many chain restaurants. The most obvious choices are the great number of affordable all-you-can-eat buffets that set up every evening right on the beach. There’s also plenty of live music, as you’d expect in the Philippines.

The hotel rates in 2023 for Christmas season are looking pretty typical for Boracay Island, which means they are cheap, although not nearly as cheap as some others on this list. Still, this is a very special place and many people come back year after year. I wish I lived closer myself.

I’m looking into an inexpensive place for my boyfriend and I to travel to for the weekend of Christmas, preferably warm .

We are open to the US but loveee to travel and would love to find a Caribbean place or other island.

The article above contains all of my best suggestions for this. To summarize, if you are in the US and you would like to go to an all-inclusive resort I’d recommend Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic for the best value. If you want to stay in a normal hotel or an Airbnb sort of thing I’d recommend Mexico for the best value. I prefer Playa del Carmen if you are in the eastern US or Puerto Vallarta if you are in the western part. Let me know if you have any other questions. -Roger

Surely, with the danger of visiting Mexico now and advice to stay on a resort, and that even being risky, making it a pointless destination, an AirBNB in Mexico would surely be madness.

It’s true that there have been some issues in Mexico lately, but it’s nothing that should keep tourists away. I only recommend the places where disturbances are extremely rare. For example, Acapulco apparently is not a safe places for foreign tourists for some time, so I don’t recommend that anyone go there.

If you are looking for a ‘very cheap’ holiday over New Years week leaving from England, you don’t have too many warm-weather options. I’d say your best cheap option would be the Canary Islands. That is a busy time there, but if you book and plan well in advance, it should be very affordable. As you may know, Tenerife is the largest of the islands and is probably easiest for those who are not fluent in Spanish. Let me know if you have any other questions about it. -Roger

I am recently heart broken 47 years old male from the midwest of the US that is wanting to get away solo on christmas day to a warmer climate that doesn’t take 2-3 days to travel to. I’m happy to help and I understand the heart break thing. My favorite two places for solo travel in the Caribbean are San Juan and the Playa del Carmen area. In fact, I think Playa del Carmen would be even better because the tourist district is so much more compact and right near the beach. The town of Tulum is another one to consider, as it’s really up and coming and it’s a bit more artsy. Playa del Carmen is really fun and there are loads of little bars and restaurants and so forth that will be easy to meet other tourists (and locals) if you choose, or just hang out and watch the crowds if you choose. I’m thinking of going to Panama next month. Have you been? Where do you recommend people eat, hang out, etc? I’m a woman in my late 20s.

I’ve only been to Panama City so far and I was very impressed. It’s much larger and more modern than other Central American capital cities, although the historic district is disappointing compared to most others. You might stop in to Panama City for a couple days and the city center area with all of the hotels seems very safe, but I’d probably focus on the beaches. I’ve heard and read great things about the San Blas Islands and that is where I plan on going on my next Panama visit. Considering the devastation that has occurred recently to Puerto Rico, is it equipped for tourism now? I hear there are still areas where there is no power or infrastructure. Please advise.

The hurricanes were in 2017 and things were really bad for a couple months, but the San Juan area was mostly back to normal a few months later. I was there in late 2018 and it seemed like everything was fine. In fact, I’m flying into San Juan tomorrow to start a cruise the following day. My understanding is that there are still some rural areas that are not back to normal, and definitely at least some hotels that were damaged and never reopened. But as far as I know the island is very welcoming of tourists and that helps them in many ways.

The easiest way to check on the outer areas is to check hotel availability there. So if you search for hotels in, say, El Rincon, you’ll see how many of them are open and ready for visitors. To be even more sure it’s wise to check recent reviews to make sure that recent guests say that things are good. I hope this helps. -Roger

Cancun itself is mostly a long stretch of beach hotels and timeshare properties, but south of that you’ve got Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and across the water you’ve got Cozumel. All of those are interesting towns filled with activities and shopping and restaurants and bars and such. There are many resorts and hotels all around Playa del Carmen that are family oriented, and you can spend most of your time at the resort, and also take a shuttle ride into the town center for a bit more culture. That would be my top pick based on what you’ve said, and the airfares into Cancun are usually reasonable. Playa del Carmen is about an hour south of Cancun airport by road. I’m planning to travel with my 3 children age ranging from 6, 7, & 23 the week of Christmas. We all have our passports. This will be there first time traveling. I want an international travel (warm weather) that’s not going to require a long plane ride and the resort ought to be kids friendly.

I’m assuming you are starting in the US since you didn’t mention a country, but flight times to most places are quite different if you are starting in, say, Seattle compared to, say, Philadelphia. -Roger

? Dear Roger, Came across your article and responses and would like to pick your brain if possible. I am looking for more ideas for warm family beach holidays (with swimming pool) from London. We are mixed race couple that started less adventurous travelling now with a just turn 2. Just back from Phuket, Malaysia and Singapore in September and hoping to find something closer like 5-7 hours flight for under a week holiday. We have been to Tenerife earlier this year with Sicily, Majorca and other Canary Island on our lists. Am thinking Turkey but we have been to Marmaris before we have a plus one but feel a bit weird when we venture around by ourselves may be because we are mixed race couple. I’ll try to help. This is an interesting query because I’ve not thought much about it. I lived for over a year in a small Turkish town near Marmaris, and now that you mention it I didn’t see many non-European visitors at all. There were a few and I never heard about any outright racism, but I’d imagine with such small numbers that it could still feel uncomfortable.

Of the places on the list, Sharm el-Sheikh and Dubai should both be closer to the flight times you mention, and I’d think that both would feel welcoming. I’ve yet to make it to Sharm and many people are still avoiding Egypt at this point, but it’s now been years since there have been any problems that have made the news. Dubai is totally filled with people from all over the world, and it does have family beaches along with swimming pools at most hotels. I’m not sure if you’ve been there before, of course. Dubai isn’t a classic beach destination because it feels much more like a big city that happens to have a few nice, sandy beaches, but it is something to consider and you can usually get apartments there for good prices. Since it’s a Muslim country, it’s a very family-friendly place.

The challenge, as you certainly know, is that in December there are almost no good warm-weather destinations near Europe so you usually have to go all the way to at least India, or to the Caribbean. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are rare exceptions in that closer area. One more to consider is Cape Verde. I haven’t been there myself, but it’s about 6 hours flight from London and has fairly warm Decembers. It’s #17 on this list of cheapest all-inclusive destinations from Europe . There is more information there that might be interesting even if you don’t want to stay at an all inclusive. Nashville, Tennessee

Music City knows how to throw a festive party at any time of year, but over New Year's Eve you can enjoy an elaborate spectacle – the annual Jack Daniel's Music City Midnight concert – without paying a penny. The performance "is expected to be an incredible event this year, offering a free show to the public to count down to the new year as a music note drops, triggering fireworks and confetti," says David Solomito, vice president of North American marketing at Kayak.com. Aside from enjoying a free Styx and Keith Urban performance and countdown with a brilliant fireworks display complete with a 15-foot music note drop at midnight, you can enjoy plenty of free and cost-effective attractions, from the Country Music Hall of Fame to the Grand Ole Opry. Even better, Nashville caters to price-sensitive visitors, with affordable flight and accommodation options. According to Kayak's historic data, in Nashville, the median flight price for January has been under $300 and the median price for a hotel has been under $250, Solomito says. Currently, Google Flights shows round-trip treks from major Washington D.C. airports starting at $213 from Dec. 30 to Jan. 4, 2017, and round-trip flights from New York City airports starting at $270 for the same period.

Laguna Beach, California

If your ideal vacation escape involves surf, sand and laid-back vibes, slip away to Laguna Beach. During New Year's week you can snag a deal at high-end hotels, explains Clara Sedlak, senior editor at travel site Jetsetter.com . At Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa you can take advantage of complimentary beach chairs and breakfast as well as a heated swimming pool, Sedlak says. During the day you can enjoy a whale-watching tour or stroll along the nearby Victoria Beach, she adds. Rooms start at around $250 a night for New Year's Eve week. For a more cost-effective stay, consider checking into Laguna Beach Lodge, which is offering rates around $140 a night for stays from Dec. 30 to Jan. 3, 2017. What's more, you can kick-start the new calendar year with a low-key beachfront celebration at one of the area's buzzy local haunts such as The Deck on Laguna Beach or Driftwood Kitchen. Kaka'ako Waterfront Park is always a crowd-pleaser, with rides, a beer garden, entertainment and food galore," says Carrie Peters, travel editor at Hotwire.com. For a wallet-friendly New Year's Eve adventure, consider heading to Canada for the long weekend. With discount carriers offering affordable flights, it's easy to snap up a bargain. Google Flights currently lists round-trip journeys from Boston's Logan International Airport starting at $300 from Dec. 30 to Jan. 4, 2017, and round-trip flights from major New York City airports starting at $200 for the same time frame. "The Hotel Omni Mont-Royal has great deals, starting at $180 a night," Sedlak says, highlighting the hotel's on-site restaurant Manitoba as a steal, with a seven-course New Year's Eve dinner starting at $90. "The Old City is great for New Year's – you feel like you're in Paris, and it's just a two-hour flight from New York City," she adds.

In Dublin , you can not only ring in the new year in grand fashion with a three-day festival and holiday-themed Irish art and cultural events, but also check out iconic sights, from Ha'Penny Bridge to lively Grafton Street to Dublin Castle, without spending a pretty penny. Solomito points to Dublin as a top pick for taking advantage of the favorable exchange rate against the euro. Dublin saw a 65 percent increase in New Year's flight searches compared to last year, Solomito says, highlighting that Dublin is the No. 6 trending destination across the globe for New Year's Eve celebrations, according to Kayak.com's 2016 Travel Hacker Guide. Google Flights currently shows round-trip treks from New York City airports starting at $560 from Dec. 30 to Jan. 4, 2017.

Los Cabos, Mexico

While most hotels in San José del Cabo, Mexico, come with steep price tags during the peak winter season, hotels are offering enticing promotions this year. Paradisus Los Cabos, a new property, is offering a promotion through Dec. 15 for stays from Dec. 23 to Jan. 6, 2017, where guests who book five-night stays can enjoy a free night, Sedlak says. Plus, "the resort has four swimming pools, seven bars and seven restaurants, so you really never have to leave the property," she adds. When you're not lounging by the pool with an umbrella drink, you can pop into trendy art galleries, enjoy snorkeling at Bahia Santa Maria or soak up the area's vibrant nightlife scene. Google Flights currently shows round-trip jaunts from New York City hubs to Los Cabos International Airport starting at $443 from Dec. 30 to Jan. 4, 2017, and round-trip flights starting from Los Angeles International Airport start at $358 from Dec. 30 to Jan. 5, 2017.

Portland, Oregon

For an under-the-radar New Year's escape, consider Portland , Peters says. "The city is friendly and walkable, with some of the best craft beer and coffee to be found anywhere," she says. What's more, the city boasts "an impressive fireworks display, as well as multiple parties and events to ring in 2017," Peters adds. Plus, you can stay in five-star accommodations without leaving a dent in your wallet, she adds. GoSeek.com currently shows nightly rates at the Heathman Hotel, a four-and-a-half-star hotel, at $162 for stays between Dec. 30 and Jan. 3, 2017. Google Flights shows round-trip journeys from Chicago hubs to Portland International Airport starting at $546 from Dec. 30 to Jan. 4, 2017, and round-trip flights from Austin, Texas, starting at $443 for the same period.

And the first thing to do is to find those places. Whether you want to party or looking for a romantic getaway with your significant other, New Years is one of the best times of the year. So, as much as possible, it’s good to make plans on what you’re going to do on this day. Here are some good New Year’s Day destinations for those who are on a budget.

1. Berlin, Germany

If you want to spend your NYE getaway on a budget, Berlin could be a perfect destination for you . The capital city of Germany is already known as one of the liveliest cities in Europe and the best time to see it is during New Year’s Day. Drinks here are also ridiculously cheap, so if you want to drink and party, it’s the best place to be. In order to get things going, you can simply join Brandenburg Gate’s official New Year’s celebration and enjoy the fireworks at Victory Column as the clock hits 12. 

2. Lisbon, Portugal

If you’re looking for a place that looks incredible to the eyes , then Lisbon would be a great choice. You can get started with a couple of shots of ginja before laying down the Cais de Sodre’s waterfront. It is a perfect place to enjoy a spectacular visual feast of fireworks and sample the local’s favorite – the roasted chestnuts. After that, you can go to Bairro Alto to party in some of the biggest nightclubs in the city. This famous Croatian city has become one of the most popular destinations to celebrate New Year’s Eve, especially from those who are on a tight budget. There are options  where to stay in Dubrovnik for every price range.

Make sure to check out the Stradun district where you can find some of the best bars and restaurants. This is also where you will find some of the most iconic places in the city. This is especially the place to be if you’re looking to spend the last day of the year with your kids. When the clock hits 10:30 PM, the traditional Children’s New Year’s Eve party begins. This part features a performance from famous local artists. With live music performances and orchestras, this is also a haven for music lovers.

5. Reykjavik, Iceland

Looking for something more authentic? Then Reykjavik could be the perfect location for you. In terms of New Year’s Eve experience, locals will surely show you how to get it done right.

Without state-run celebrations going on, the locals take control, and more than 200,000 people go out to the streets 30 minutes before the, fortified with fireworks. Another great option if you’re looking for cheap places to travel for New Years in Vienna! As a German-speaking country, instead of having a typical firework-filled New Year’s Day, you’re likely to experience a party as you’ve never experienced before. Go directly to the Old City that’s totally turned into a huge party zone, the center of which you can call New Year’s Eve Trail – full of parties, music, and of course, food to satisfy your taste bud. If you are planning to celebrate New Year’s Day with your romantic partner, then it’s definitely one of the best places .

7. Bratislava, Slovakia

Bratislava is probably not a place you would expect to be on this list. However, if you’re looking for a cheap place to spend New Year’s Eve in with your family, especially if you’re with children, then this is a place to be. Goa is a small state located in the southern part of the country with over a dozen different laid-back beach towns, each of which caters to its own groups of travelers. Goa certainly beats all other cities in India in terms of partying. Party is a synonym to Goa. Incorporate the zeal of New Year and you’re getting yourself an epic experience. A wild New Year party in Goa is one of the best experiences you can have to start your year right.

9. Phuket, Thailand

Another great Asian destination for celebrating New Year’s Day is Phuket in Thailand. This beach destination features well more than 1,000 resorts and hotels for you to stay during this special day. It also has a walking street filled with bars, clubs, and restaurants showing crazy shows for everyone to enjoy.

Phuket has long been a candidate for one of the bes t spots for partying in Thailand . Bangla Road is one of people’s favorite with its exciting club scene and its closeness to one of the prettiest beaches in the country. 

That being said, my personal favorite would be Surin Beach. This place has been a popular New Year’s Day destination for those who are looking for a nonstop party. Along with Surin Beach, the whole island is basically turned into a party zone during this day, with people having fun, spectacular fireworks, beach barbecues, live music, and delicious food served in many restaurants.

10. Bali, Indonesia

With sunshine all year round, great waves, colorful culture, and some of the best parties you’ll ever find, Bali is definitely one of the best cheap places to travel for New Year’s Day celebration. Dance until the sun rises and hits the golden sand of beautiful beaches or simply enjoy the beautiful fireworks illuminating the sky. Bali is definitely an ultimate destination for this particular day. However, because Bali is located in the Southern Hemisphere, expect a little bit of rain during this month. But then again, the rain normally doesn’t last very long, so you can surely enjoy your stay here overall. Interest rate hikes, rising food costs and inflated petrol rates… I could go on. With prices of practically everything increasing, money is tight for many. Still eager to bid a big fat goodbye to 2023? There are plenty of good value New Year’s Eve breaks around the world to ring in 2024 .

From the cost of flights and accommodation to food and general activity expenditures, I’ve considered everything. Ready to ring in a brand new year in a brand new location? Here are 9 memorable New Year’s Eve breaks that tend to have cheap flights and good-value celebrations.

The best cheap New Year’s Eve breaks

1. experience hogmanay in edinburgh.

If you’re looking for a memorable New Year’s Eve break in the UK, get yourself to Edinburgh . Ok, that should actually be ‘Hogmanay break’ rather than ‘New Year break’. Names aside though, Edinburgh is the place to be for a party.

If you are on a strict budget, the city hosts three days of free live music and street festivals from December 30th to January 1st. There’s also the Edinburgh Hogmanay Street Party (prices TBC) which is usually very reasonably priced at around £30 per person. The event is world famous, with an anticipated 30,000 revellers taking to the streets with LED wristbands to enjoy fireworks, live DJ sets, delicious food and fairground rides.

However, you don’t actually have to pay to see the fireworks. They can be viewed from all across the city. What’s more, many pubs and bars also host lively Hogmanay celebrations (although it’s worth booking in advance ). Want to check out some of the Scottish capital’s attractions while you’re there? There are plenty of free activities and sights to enjoy, too.

2. Ring in 2024 in elegant Vienna

Looking for a New Year’s Eve break abroad with a touch of flair? Get yourself to Vienna. Flights to this beautiful city are reasonable, plus there are accommodation options to suit all tastes and budgets .

For the city’s main New Year’s event, head to the Old Town for Silvesterpfad. Translated as New Year’s Eve Trail , it features lively parties, food (lots of sausages!) and music to suit every taste . At the stroke of midnight, you’ll hear Pummerin: the famous bell of St. Stephen’s Cathedral which only strikes on special occasions.

If you fancy indulging in some culture on New Year, Vienna comes into its own with activities like opera, theatre, and classical concerts . Want to get in on a local tradition? Vienna’s residents like to swap marzipan pigs to toast in the New Year – they’re considered lucky charms!

3. Eat, drink and be merry in Lisbon

Where would I recommend as a cheap New Year’s destination in Europe that satisfies all the senses? Lisbon , of course! While many consider Portugal’s capital a summer destination , it’s also a great place to see out the end of the year .

The easiest way to indulge your tastebuds is to head to the legendary Timeout Food Market. There, you can sample a wide selection of delicacies such as the amazing Pasteis de Nata (the city’s world-famous custard tarts). Afterwards, wind through the city’s cobbled streets to the waterfront to party and watch the free firework display that lights up the sky at midnight.

Lisbon’s nightclubs will then be in full flow until dawn breaks. And the best bit? You can experience all of this without putting a major strain on your finances.

4. Celebrate in party-loving Amsterdam

If you’re planning to celebrate the end of the year with a party-based city break, Amsterdam is the perfect destination for a New Year’s holiday. That’s because many of the nightclubs have 24-hour licenses .

The capital of the Netherlands is well-known as one of the liveliest cities in Europe – and NYE is no exception.  The whole city turns into a massive party , with fireworks, concerts and events hosted all over the town. The streets around the Oosterdok and Rembrandtplein have lots of impromptu street parties, while the district of Nieuwmarkt is especially wild.

At midnight, get a spot on the Magere Brug bridge for the fireworks before heading to one of the city’s many nightclubs. It really is the ultimate destination for New Year’s!

5. Book a family-friendly New Year’s Eve break in Bratislava

Bratislava may not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of a family-friendly New Year’s Eve trip. However, this gorgeous city is cheap to get to and offers value for money when you arrive.

From lunchtime on the 31st, Bratislava’s  stunning medieval old town turns into one giant party, with various events and celebrations to suit all ages. This includes a range of traditional activities and modern events , including dancing and singing.

Bratislava is also a fabulous city for New Year’s Eve for adults thanks to its buzzing nightclubs.

6. Sample Berlin’s world-famous party scene

Each year, Berlin attracts thousands of visitors eager to sample its notorious party scene. It’s bursting with countless bars, a vast techno scene and several 24-hour nightclubs.

While you can find a great party any night of the week, month or year, Silvester (NYE) in Germany’s capital is a particularly big deal. The highlight of a New Year’s Eve break in Berlin is the big, free festival with fireworks at the Brandenburg Gate : one of the world’s largest open-air New Year’s Eve events.

Afterwards, you can hit the bars and clubs for more festivities. Make sure your practice how to say ‘Frohes neues Jahr’ (‘Happy New Year’ in the local lingo). Looking for something a little more wholesome? Many of Berlin’s famous Christmas Markets are open until the start of January.

7. Enjoy some culture in Prague

Whether you’re after a short break abroad, a family break , a couple’s break or a straight-up party break, Prague has something for everyone . Head towards the river banks near Charles Bridge to enjoy relaxed revelry. Book a table at a nice restaurant in the hills. Or head to Old Town Square or Wenceslas Square for a wilder atmosphere.

A river cruise is another good option. And the next day? Spend the 1st of January 2024 admiring the beautiful city on a free walking tour or visiting the majestic Prague Castle.

8. For wintery vibes, visit Reykjavík

Wondering where to go for New Year’s Eve for authenticity? Reykjavik may well be the answer. As far as New Year’s Eve breaks go, Iceland’s capital is pretty near perfect — and the flights are surprisingly cheap too.

With no state-run festivities planned, the locals tend to take charge and thousands head out into the streets at midnight dressed in sparkly outfits and snow boots. Earlier on in the evening, you’ll find them cosy indoors in front of the TV. Why? Because it’s tradition to watch a show called ‘Áramótaskaup’ which satirises the year just gone.

Just before midnight, the city’s residents set off fireworks galore. Starting with a literal bang, the party continues well into the wee hours or indeed the next day at bars or house parties.

There’s a lot to love about Iceland during the day, too. Expect lots of snowy scenery, dramatic frozen waterfalls and the amazing geothermal Blue Lagoon (the perfect place to soothe your hangover).

9. Dance the night away in Budapest

Another cheap New Year’s destination in Europe to consider is Budapest . The Hungarian capital is one of the best city break locations, regardless of the time of year. In winter, though, you can take full advantage of its steaming thermal baths, pretty frozen scenery and hearty seasonal cuisine.

Budapest is a wonderful spot for an affordable night out, too. Why not bar hop around the city’s rustic ruin bars (including the iconic Simpla Kert)? You could also grab tickets to the incredible New Year’s Eve Bath Party hosted at the outdoor Szechenyi Baths. Or, for a more low-key night, consider a NYE cruise along the Danube . Some offer multi-course dinners and live piano music, while others cater to a younger crowd.

Finding cheap airfare around the holidays is never an easy task.

Though customers have seen some relief in recent months, the holidays are generally shaping up to be both busy and pricey. As TPG reported last month , your best bet to find the cheapest airfare for the major year-end holidays is, without a doubt, to book sooner rather than later.

But how can you find the cheapest destinations to visit for the holidays? It may require some creativity.

Finding the cheapest holiday airfare

One thing we frequently discuss here at TPG is flexibility: The more flexible you are, the better chance you have to find a good deal.

After all, if you're not tied down to a particular location, specific travel dates, certain time of day or a particular airline, you can maximize your potential for finding the best deal.

In fact, lack of flexibility is exactly what can make the holiday travel so difficult — and expensive.

Many Thanksgiving travelers, for instance, have schedules that dictate they must leave during the afternoon or evening hours Wednesday, the day before the holiday, to fly to a specific destination. That doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room for alternative itinerary options.

"Most folks don't associate Thanksgiving with cheap flights, but that's because most people are traveling home to visit family," Scott Keyes, founder of airfare-tracking site Going , told TPG.

To the extent you can skirt those trends, though, you might be able to find better deals.

What will it cost to fly?

In its holiday travel forecast published in recent weeks, booking app Hopper noted average Thanksgiving airfare for a domestic flight came in at around $268, down 14% from last year.

Christmas is a different story, though, with average domestic round trips averaging around $400 — down from last year but up significantly, 29%, from 2019.

Keep in mind, though, that these are merely averages. What you'll pay for your holiday trip really comes down to the individual route you're flying.

But you can use those averages as a benchmark to try and "beat" as you decide what price you're willing to settle for.

Finding the cheapest places to travel for Thanksgiving

If flying overseas for Thanksgiving has never occurred to you, you're certainly not alone. After all, the thought of traveling to a country that doesn't celebrate one of the most iconic American holidays may seem counterintuitive.

But when it comes to prices, that outside-the-box approach can work in your favor.

"Thanksgiving is the hidden best week for international travel," Keyes says. "All those people traveling domestically are, by definition, not traveling internationally."

That means Thanksgiving prices for international flights don't spike at the same rate domestic flights do. They may be cheaper than usual — a basic case of supply and demand.

International flights over Thanksgiving

To get your money's worth and tap into the cheapest prices, you may want to take an additional day or two off work on the front or back end of the holiday period. (This is a great option in general as you consider Thanksgiving travel.)

For instance, even as domestic airfare spikes over the Thanksgiving holiday, you can still find a round trip from New York to Paris for $546, flying on a combination Star Alliance itinerary (United Airlines on the way out, Air Canada on the way back).

Another destination to consider? South America.

Hopper says Thanksgiving-week airfare to South America is trending 12% cheaper than 2019; it's the only continent or major international region seeing broad declines in pricing over the Thanksgiving holiday when compared with pre-pandemic travel in 2019, its data shows.

How to know if you're getting a good deal

It's difficult to provide a catch-all destination that's cheap to fly to over the holidays.

After all, with airfare largely determined by constantly fluctuating supply and demand-based algorithms, you might see prices to a destination low from one city but sky-high from another.

There are some tricks, though.

Google Flights has a function that will tell you how current fares compare to historical data.

For instance, the search engine rates our New York-to-Paris airfare on the "low" end of the spectrum, hundreds of dollars cheaper than what you'll typically find.

On the other hand, the cheapest trip from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) during those dates comes to more than $1,200.

Though you may not even need Google to validate this for you, that registers as (very) "high."

Tools like these can help you decide whether to spring for one itinerary based on the price or opt for another.

Finding the cheapest places to travel for Christmas

Although there's some hope of finding some decent deals for Thanksgiving, it's getting harder to say the same about the end-of-year holidays.

Average airfare across the board (not just including the holidays) is down 13% year-over-year, according to Katy Nastro, Going spokesperson and travel expert. "That doesn't change the fact that the winter holidays are the busiest time of the year to travel, which can mean surrendering to ridiculously high prices if you book last minute," she said.

"The closer we get to the holidays, the lower your odds of a cheap flight," Nastro added.

Compared to full calendar year airfare averages, Hopper is tracking marginal price drops to just a couple of regions over Christmas:

• The Caribbean is seeing an 8% drop compared to the calendar year average. (However, we found plenty of $800 and $900 round trips to islands from the East Coast, so you still may have to search a bit to find a good deal.)
• Oceania (think Australia and New Zealand) is seeing an 8% drop versus the calendar year average — something to consider if you're thinking about a long-haul holiday excursion.

Find ways to save beyond airfare

If you end up having to pay more for airfare than you'd like, your next best option may be to find other opportunities along your trip to save.

Your hotel is a big part of that, particularly in a year when lodging prices have remained high .

Over the end-of-year holidays, that may involve considering a U.S. destination even if you'd had your heart set on traveling internationally, according to Melinda Fortunato, a travel adviser based outside Washington, D.C.

"What I'm hearing from hotel partners in the U.S. is, because there's such a push for international travel, there's still a lot of openings in the U.S.," Fortunato, the president of Best Travel, said. "In some cases, they are having specials and packages and things like that to attract customers."

Internationally, she recommends seeking out lesser-known, more " off-the-beaten-path " destinations.

"If you want to go to the typical Paris, London — the big cities and, during the holidays, the Christmas markets — then those places are still going to be expensive and availability is going to be tight," Fortunato said, recommending small towns in Europe as an alternative.

And don't forget about the savings you can pick up in places like Colombia, Argentina and Peru where the dollar is strong right now. This can help you save on everything from your hotel to your ground transportation and meals.

If you do decide to pay for a trip out of pocket instead of using points or miles, be sure to take advantage of those American Express Membership Week offers you (hopefully) added to your account, which can help you save hundreds on your holiday travels.

And finally, you can always search award space on an airline that doesn't use dynamic pricing for its redemptions, such as Avianca .

There may not be any award space available on some flights. In other cases, you may be able to snag an award flight that isn't subject to the same forces that cause dynamically priced awards to spike with cash prices over the holidays. This can be a way to put your hard-earned credit card points to good use over the holidays.

Bottom line

If airfare the last couple of years has taught us anything, it's that prices will fluctuate, and your best bet to secure a deal is to lock it in when you see it.

You may not find a $150 transcontinental flight at Christmas. However, thinking a bit outside the box on your destinations — and using tools like Google Flights to find which departure and return dates get you the best price — could go a long way toward saving you money on holiday travel this year.

It’s a catch-22 that so many travelers bemoan: Summer is the most convenient time to travel thanks to good weather and plenty of federal holidays to extend that vacation . But summer holidays—like Memorial Day Weekend, Juneteenth, Fourth of July, and Labor Day Weekend—are among the most expensive days of the year to fly, leading many would-be-tourists to just stay home.

But if you purchase your airfare during the right booking window, it's still possible to score a deal on flights departing in June, July, and August. We’re talking roundtrip flights from New York to Copenhagen for just $459, Chicago to Madrid for $540, and Boston to Cancun for just $296, according to Hopper .

But to lock in cheap summer flights, the general consensus is not to delay any further. “Especially if you’re looking to catch a flight during one of the many holiday weekends this summer, you should start planning now before you miss out on the best deals,” says Laura Lindsay, Skyscanner’s global travel trends and destinations expert. A good rule of thumb is booking a month out at the very least, and buying tickets even farther ahead could lead to bigger savings.

When planning your summer vacay , there’s also more to consider than just the holiday crowds. According to Skyscanner’s data, the most popular week for international travel this summer is the week of June 10, while domestic flights are projected to reach peak popularity the following week, June 17, which is the same week as Juneteenth.

It's a lot to consider, we know. So, to help cut through the noise, we asked experts at Skyscanner, Going, and Hopper for their best budget travel tips on how to score cheap summer flights for every holiday weekend this year.

Memorial Day Weekend

The booking window to find a deal on flights for Memorial Day Weekend, which falls on Monday May 27 this year, is quickly closing. “You’ll find the best prices for Memorial Day Weekend now,” Hopper travel expert Lindsay Schwimer tells Condé Nast Traveler . “Book no later than April 15th as prices will only increase as we get closer to Memorial Day.” In the last three weeks leading up to the long weekend, prices are predicted to increase more than $40 per week, Hopper’s data shows.

This year, Juneteenth, which is celebrated annually on June 19, falls on a Wednesday. The fact that it’s a midweek day off in 2024, and that it’s a newer federal holiday , could mean a better chance of locking in cheaper airline tickets. “Juneteenth is a holiday that sits at the very beginning of the peak summer travel season when some schools are still in session—and not all employers observe this day—so you might be able to find deals a touch closer in,” says Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going .

The middle of June, however, usually ends up being a popular time with travelers, “so expect higher airfares overall,” Schwimer says. According to Hopper, the best time to book is now: mid-March. But booking no later than May 1 should help keep prices from getting too exorbitant.

Fourth of July

Falling on a Thursday in 2024, July 4th will be a tempting time for US travelers to take a long weekend and fly to a destination a bit farther from home.

To stay one step ahead of the high demand—and higher prices—buy your Independence Day airfares three months in advance, according to Hopper’s data. March and April are the best times to lock in tickets. “Book no later than June 1st to get a good price and ensure there is still availability on your route,” Schwimer says, adding that prices are likely to spike by about $50 per week in the last three weeks leading up to July 4th. Not only that, but flights around this time often sell out, so booking now will help you avoid big disappointment down the line.

Labor Day Weekend

Usually viewed as the traditional end of summer travel season , Labor Day Weekend has some unexpected advantages to finding flight deals. “Because some schools are back in session and a lot of folks take their summer trips before this period, you again might be able to find some cheaper fares versus traveling in the middle of summer,” Nastro says. “We just found some availability from the end of August into September from Las Vegas to Dublin roundtrip for only $518, a fare almost half off normal price.”

According to Hopper, the best time to find deals for Labor Day , which falls on Monday, September 2 in 2024, is one to three months in advance of the holiday weekend. But if you miss that window, you might still have options. “There will be some deals available if you book more last minute, meaning within three to six weeks of departure, but you’ll need to be flexible on destination or dates to find these deals,” Schwimer says.

More tips for finding affordable summer airfare

In fact, keeping an open mind on destinations and the exact dates of your trip is good advice for finding cheaper flights in general. “Travelers that can be flexible in terms of the destination, airports, airlines, and dates will have more options,” says Lindsay from SkyScanner, which offers an “ Everywhere” search feature to show cheap flights to destinations around the world departing from your home airport. Google Flights also offers a similar search filter, called “explore,” which allows users to input their departure airport and then move the map to see the most affordable destinations across the globe.

If you’re already set on a destination, consider using a price monitoring tool, which Hopper and Google Flights both offer. Travelers can input their vacation dates and airports and let the websites track airfares for them—they will send a notification when a good deal on your route is available. That means you can slip into vacation mode that much sooner.

From the outside, it may seem like the northern lights dance across Iceland’s skies each night. On Icelandair ads, planes fly across shimmering curtains in the sky. On social media, travelers gaze at the green bands above them . The lights are even on some recycling bins in Reykjavík, the capital: “Keep Iceland Clean.”

In the past decade or so, an aurora borealis industrial complex has boomed in Iceland. Many rent a car and go out on their own, but there are northern lights big bus tours and northern lights minibus tours and northern lights Super Jeep tours . There are private guides and boat cruises . There’s an observatory base camp . There’s even a museum .

But the lights can be elusive.

“Tourists sometimes expect, like, ‘At what time do you turn them on?’” said Björn Saevar Einarsson, a forecaster at Iceland’s meteorological office , chuckling. “Like we have a switch in the back room.”

This year, the letdowns are especially intense.

The northern lights, which are also called the aurora borealis, are most visible when there are solar flares, which are big eruptions on the sun that send charged particles toward Earth. This year, the sun is approaching the peak of its 11-year cycle of activity , which some assume means that the displays could peak, too.

But the enhanced solar activity doesn’t necessarily mean the northern lights will be brighter or more frequent, scientists wearily explain. Instead, they mostly mean that the lights can be seen farther south than usual: In recent months, they have been visible in Arizona , Missouri and southern England .

That doesn’t mean much for Iceland.

In fact, Icelanders and scientists said, this winter is nothing special. Sometimes, the lights are there. Sometimes, they aren’t. Just like always.

Hunting the lights

But nothing special, with the northern lights, is still very special. And so tourists keep coming .

Last month, I joined the fray. For four nights, I looked for telltale sky shimmers in and around Reykjavík.

I booked my tickets riding high — this was the best year yet, right? But as I learned more, and as my flight neared, my hopes ebbed. Scientists and tour leaders gently told me that the skies were cloudy and the solar activity seemed quiet.

“Just to let you know the forecast doesn’t look too good” Inga Dís Richter, the chief commercial officer at Icelandia , a tourism agency, wrote in an email two days before I planned to take a minibus trip with Reykjavik Excursions , one of its tour operators.

“But,” she added, “this can change.”

To find the lights, guides and travelers often rely on aurora forecasts, which overlay cloud cover and solar activity. They check them constantly, like a bride with an outdoor wedding in mid-April.

Some of the forecasts are free, like the aurora forecast run by Iceland’s meteorological office or Iceland at Night , which includes space weather. (Some are not — Aurora Forecast , which costs $12.99 a year, sends alerts.) Many people also turn to Facebook pages , where enthusiasts hungrily swap sightings.

Luck, though, is everything.

“There’s only one thing less predictable with the northern lights, and that’s the Arctic weather,” said John Mason, a global expert on the northern lights. “An aurora forecast is barely worth the paper that it’s written on.”

The guides work hard to explain the science, and set expectations. Most companies offer a free rebooking option if the lights do not show.

On my first night of aurora stalking, despite Ms. Richter’s warnings, I joined an expectant group on the Reykjavík Excursions minibus. For $88, I got a seat on the 19-person bus, which left the city’s central bus station at 9:30 p.m.

Over the next three to four hours, we would drive through the Icelandic night together. I’d either see something astonishing with these strangers — the sky, banded with light — or shiver with them shoulder-to-shoulder, awkward in the cold.

As we pulled onto the road, Gudjon Gunnarsson, the guide, set the mood early. “We are going hunting for the lights,” he said, emphasizing the word “hunting,” “similar to going out fishing in a lake.”

He drove for about 45 minutes, letting Reykjavík’s glow fade behind us. The city has about 140,000 people, and no real skyscrapers, so there’s limited light pollution. Although the northern lights can appear over the city, it’s best to see them in total darkness.

Then he paused and consulted with another guide.

“It is too cloudy here,” he told his flock. “So we will keep driving.”

But as we kept driving, clouds turned to a dense fog, so thick that the moon all but disappeared.

Mr. Gunnarsson turned off the main highway about an hour after we left Reykjavík. He parked in a parking lot. Or maybe it was a side street? The darkness was so deep that I could only make out the moonlight on the ocean, and only then after my eyes adjusted.

We disembarked and stood dutifully beside him, staring up at the sky. Then, one woman pointed toward Reykjavík. Were those the lights? (No. That was light pollution.)

Christof Reinhard, 65, who owns a medical laser company and was visiting with his family from Paris, mused that our search was a little bit like a safari. Sure, the desert is amazing, but it’s much better with lions. Or, maybe, was this more like a whale watch?

“Instead of a boat,” he said, “you have a bus.”

Mr. Gunnarsson watched the group stomp their feet and bend into the wind. Fifteen minutes. Then, half an hour. The clouds hung thick above. “There’s nothing happening here, as you can see,” he finally said to relieved chuckles. “It’s one of those nights where you just have to give up.”

Tourists can get mad, Mr. Gunnarsson and other guides said. It’s rare, but it does happen.

“It’s the trip that has our worst reviews,” said Eric Larimer, the digital marketing manager for Gray Line Iceland , a day tour and airport transport company.

A wake-up call for the aurora

For some, the joy is in the search, even if there is no find. A few focus on astronomy, often opting to stay at Hotel Rangá , which is just off the main ring road (Route 1) near Iceland’s south coast.

The hotel looks unassuming — low-slung and wooden — but it’s one of the most famous in Iceland. (The Kardashians stayed there . So did the Real Housewives of Orange County .) A standard room costs more than $300, depending on the season.

But Rangá doesn’t just cater to celebrities. It also draws astronomy buffs, enticed by its “aurora wake-up call” service and its observatory, which has state-of-the-art telescopes.

“One thing is to sell them,” said Fridrik Pálsson, the hotel’s owner, speaking of the northern lights. “Another thing is to deliver them.”

About 20 years ago, before the northern lights industry took off, he delegated the night security guard to monitor the sky. The guard pokes his head out every few minutes to look for the telltale flicker. If he sees the lights, he alerts the guests.

The service aims to address one of the main issues with hunting for the northern lights: They are usually only visible on winter nights, when it is very cold, very windy and very late.

“To be a good northern lights observer, you need the constitution of an insomniac polar bear,” Dr. Mason said.

My room phone, alas, stayed silent. But I did dream about the lights — great Wonka colors swirling, strangely, behind the Chrysler Building.

Mr. Pálsson built the observatory, too. Even if the lights didn’t show up, he figured, the stars are still magnificent — and, for city dwellers, also rare. The hotel contracts astronomers to work the telescopes and explain the stars to guests.On my second night in Iceland, as twilight slipped below happy-hour skies, I crunched across the snow to the observatory with Saevar Helgi Bragason, an Icelandic science communicator who leads the astronomy program.

He bent into a toddler-size telescope, focusing it on the moon’s craters. They looked clearer than the hotel, just a short walk away. It was too early for the lights, he said. And that evening seemed too cloudy (on Earth) and too quiet (on the sun).

Mr. Bragason joked that the lights can get in his way — they create a mist over the stars he really wants to see. But tourists often come specifically to see them. And sometimes, he said, as they wait impatiently, they can miss the real wonder.

“You’re left with these beautiful skies above you,” he said. “Basically, literally, another universe opens up.”

Creating a lights season

Hotel Rangá was a pioneer in Iceland’s northern lights tourism industry: About two decades ago, people came to Iceland for the long summer days, and left as daylight slipped farther south.

“I found it rather stupid in the beginning,” admitted Mr. Pálsson, the owner of Rangá, speaking of northern lights tourism.

But spreading tourism throughout the year made sense. Partly, that was an environmental concern. The tourists would crowd the country’s extraordinary natural sites over just a few months. It was also economic. When the visitors left Iceland, tourism jobs would ebb with the sunlight.

So the northern lights, which are reliably visible from September to March, became the backbone of the country’s winter branding, said Sveinn Birkir Björnsson, the marketing and communications director at Business Iceland , which promotes the country.

“To be able to sell this product of cold and darkness, you have to have something to offer,” he said.

Now, even though June, July and August are the busiest months, tourism has evened out over the seasons. In 2023, there were about 1.1 million international visitors to Iceland during the aurora months, based on departures from Keflavík Airport, according to data from Iceland’s tourist board . From April to August, there were about 1.1 million, too.

About a decade earlier , when tourism overall to Iceland was lower, there were about 336,000 departures from the main airport in colder months, and about 446,000 in the spring and summer.

The winter travelers are drawn by the lights — and the hot springs, glaciers and icy waterfalls. It’s also cheaper than the summer season.

Some try to visit volcanoes , but the country recently warned tourists to avoid the lava flows — Iceland is living in an unusually active period of seismic activity . In January, lava flowed into a small town and last week a volcano erupted with just 40 minutes’ notice near the Blue Lagoon thermal springs, one of the country’s biggest attractions.

The final attempts

Near midnight on my last night, a Sunday, I drove to the Grótta Lighthouse , a popular spot on the outskirts of Reykjavík.

A few die-hard experts had warned me off — many tourists go there because it’s darker than most of Reykjavík, but then don’t think to turn off their headlights. It was also raining, greatly diminishing my chances of seeing the lights.

But I only had three hours before I had to leave to make my predawn flight. I felt a little desperate, a little dazed. I parked, and approached two people who were sitting in the rain on a wet wall, looking at the water in the darkness. I climbed over seaweed, and introduced myself. What would it mean to them, I asked, if the lights suddenly appeared?

“It’d be a little bit like the cherry on top,” said Catherine Norburn, 29, who was visiting from England.

She and her husband were set to fly out the next morning. They had not yet seen the lights.

“We don’t have high hopes,” said her husband, Reece Norburn, 29, “but it’s now or never.”

We didn’t see the lights. And I didn’t see them later, even after pulling off the highway halfway between Reykjavík and the airport at 3:30 a.m., half convinced by a shimmery cloud.

But I did spend more time looking up at the sky. And it’s a marvel.

In New York City, where I live, the night sky blooms orange-mauve. In Iceland, the nighttime darkness is just that — darkness. Clouds roll, breaking the deep blue. Stars actually shine. Northern lights or no northern lights, it was still cosmically beautiful.

Christmas gift guide to Moscow surroundings

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Vladimir Chic ( 2 Dvoryanskaya ) also sells local glass and crystal work.

Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.
