Star Trek Infinite is among the few Mac compatible games released in the past months. Owners of both Intel and Apple Silicon MacBooks to enjoy them natively, without needing to resort to elaborate workarounds. And since we are both sci-fi 4X nerds as well as among the select few, who actually think Macs can be decent gaming machines, we decided to give this game a go and share our experiences with it.

If you are eager to try the game for yourself and don’t have the patience to read through what we have to say about it, here’s a quick guide to help you download and install the Star Trek Infinite Mac version on your Apple machine.

Playing the native macOS version of the game via Steam is a straightforward process. Here’s how you can do it:

  • First, If you don’t already have Steam installed on your Mac, you can download it from the Steam website .
  • I f you don’t have a Steam account, you’ll need to create one. If you’re already registered, simply log in.
  • After logging in, search for the game and click on it to go to its page where you can purchase it. Alternatively, you can check CDKeys for discounts on Star Trek Infinite and buy the game from there.
  • Next open your Steam library, find the game, and click the ‘Install’ button and wait for the process to complete. Once the game’s ready, you can start it through its ‘Play’ button.

Our experience with Star Trek Infinite on Mac

Contrary to what the the game’s Steam page says about the Star Trek Infinite Mac requirements, the game doesn’t actually require a whopping 15 gigs of Memory to run on an Apple computer. We opted to test the game on our MacBook Air M1 and its 8 gigs of unified memory were more than enough for this game.

However, even though the game’s performance, as determined by our testing hardware, was reasonable while running the game at medium settings, the real issue came from the current state of the game itself. You see both PC and Mac users have reported that the game has a lot of bugs and is prone to crashing, and we can attest to the validity of those complaints. It seems that the Apple crowd have it particularly bad in this instance, with the Star Trek Infinite macOS port being full of issues that make the game difficult to enjoy.

According to other users , who’ve played the game on PC, the Windows version also seems to have some annoying bugs, but is generally more stable and less frustrating.

Within the first several hours of playing the game, we experienced several crashes, especially after completing first contact missions. Also, we weren’t even able to load the Tutorial as any attempts to do so threw us out of the game. Good thing that gameplay-wise, Star Trek Infinite is basically a re-skin of Stellaris, so we had a good idea of what we were supposed to do.

In other words, if you are thinking about getting Star Trek Infinite on your Mac, we recommend giving it some time until a patch is released that hopefully fixes most of the issues present in the game’s macOS port. Otherwise, the frustration you might get from trying to play the game in its current state my make you lose your taste for it as a whole.

Are there other ways to play Star Trek Infinite on Mac?

If the current state of the Star Trek Infinite Mac version is so unpolished, and the PC version plays better, then is there a way to play that version on a Mac? There are, in fact, a couple of ways that can be attempted, such as using CrossOver or Boot Camp , but they come with their own set of disadvantages, so we cannot recommend them for a game that has a native macOS version that will probably have most of its bugs patched out in the coming weeks.

A good alternative for playing Star Trek Infinite on an Apple computer would have been cloud gaming, but right now the game isn’t available on any cloud platform, so this is also not a valid option at the moment. If the game becomes available on any cloud services in the future, we’ll make sure to update this post accordingly, because this method of gaming on a Mac is viable even in cases where the specific game is supported for macOS.

Ultimately, as we said, if you are eager to try out the latest grand strategy from Paradox Interactive, getting its native version is your best bet, but our advice is to wait a week or two until the main problems with the Star Trek Infinite Mac port are taken care of.

'Star Trek: Infinite' grand galactic strategy game lands on Mac

Players can select from four distinct factions: the United Federation of Planets, Klingon Empire, Romulan Star Empire, or Cardassian Union. The role of faction leader holds significant sway in determining the outcome, as each faction offers a unique approach to the game's progression.

Star Trek: Infinite delivers an authentic Star Trek experience where players' leadership choices shape the narrative. Align with the Federation to recruit iconic captains like Picard, Janeway, Sisko, and Data, or choose other factions for well-known characters like Gowron, Makbar, Garak, and more.

Players choose from a range of starships tailored to their faction and character. Options include the Federation's Intrepid and Defiant class ships, Cardassian Galor class vessels, Romulan D'deridex , and Klingon Negh'Var battleships. The Enterprise -D can be unlocked and added to the Federation's fleet via a unique Star Trek: Infinite storytelling system.

Star Trek: Infinite is available on Steam for $29.99 or $39.99 for the deluxe edition. It is available for Apple Silicon, and will run on just about any Intel Mac made after 2016.

Star Trek: Infinite announced for fall 2023 release on PC and Mac

Paradox Interactive, the famed maker of Europa Universalis , Hearts of Iron , Crusader Kings , and other games in the grand strategy genre, announced today Star Trek: Infinite — a strategy title aiming for a fall 2023 release on PC and MacOS and set in the decades before Star Trek: The Next Generation .

The game’s press release notes players “will run an entire fleet within the Star Trek universe,” and players will “command one of four major powers in the galaxy: the United Federation of Planets, Romulan Star Empire, Cardassian Union, or Klingon Empire.” Each faction has “individualized traits, stories, quests, and more to make their play feel distinct.” The developer promises more information during Captain Picard Day on June 16 .

A short trailer accompanied the announcement and showcased a fleet of Federation ships encountering a Borg Cube. You can check out the official teaser trailer below.

“It is an honor to bring one of entertainment’s most iconic properties to life for our players and Star Trek’s multigenerational fanbase,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “We know how much this franchise means to fans all over the world, and we are working closely with Nimble Giant and Paramount Consumer Products to create a faithful and fulfilling game that lives up to their expectations.”

Infinite is developed in collaboration with Nimble Giant Entertainment, a studio based in Argentina and responsible for titles such as 2021’s Hellbound and 2020’s Quantum League and Rocket Arena .

Star Trek and the 4X genre seem like a match so perfect it’s a fantasy you’d just have to create on a Holodeck. A grand universe to explore, tons of interesting species and factions to meet, and some very cool spaceships; what’s not to like? With so much promise, Star Trek: Infinite could have been – should have been – a slam dunk. But while I really wanted to like Star Trek: Infinite, it didn’t seem to like me back. It has some neat and unique ideas, but after dealing with more than a few off design choices and seeing several playthroughs blown up dozens of hours in by bugs that prevented me from performing major actions, I’m happy to explore strange new worlds elsewhere.

It’s quicker to list the few things Infinite does right than wrong, so let’s start there. This space-based grand strategy game is clearly heavily inspired by the excellent Stellaris , but developer Nimble Giant Entertainment has done a good job of making things just different enough to distinguish itself. You’ll start by picking one of four factions: the Federation, the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Empire, or the Cardassian Union. This choice isn’t just for flavor, either, as each faction plays dramatically differently, with unique units, mechanics, and different ways to expand its empire.

The Federation is best at exploring, diplomacy, and researching new technology. The Cardassians excel at spycraft, warfare, and conquering and enslaving other species. The Klingons’ penchant for tradition and honorable combat make them the ones you’ll want to use if you’re looking to conquer the rest of known space through coups. And the versatile Romulans, while great at stealth and guile, can either assimilate like the Federation or conquer like the Klingons or Cardassians. It’s good stuff; every faction feels distinct while still making it clear they’re playing the same game.

And… that’s about it as far as your options go. Infinite has a ton of Minor Powers like the Betazoid Houses or the Ktarian Enclave, but they’re only there for you to assimilate, conquer, enslave, trade with, and so on. They exist only to give the Major Powers something to do, which is a shame because it makes them feel more like resources to utilize rather than actual factions. It would be cool to take control of a Minor Power like the Bejorans and break away from Cardassian rule or try your luck as the Trill Assembly. Unfortunately, there’s just no option to.

The tutorial starts you off as the Federation, which is probably a good decision because they’re the most interesting faction, though the actual guidance you get is pretty barebones. It walks you through the basics, but you’ll probably need to watch several hours of YouTube tutorials before you actually understand what you’re doing if you’re not already familiar with 4X games – but once you’re in, Infinite has some nice touches that really nail the Trek feel.

You always start each new campaign in the same place at the same time: the year 2346, or about twenty years before the beginning of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It’s a deliberate and smart choice, as all of the Major Powers are neighbors at more or less the same strength, and a lot of the most important events in Star Trek are right around the corner. The incident that kicks everything off is the Khitomer Massacre, a Romulan attack on a Klingon colony, and fans of the shows will enjoy seeing other canon events occur as time goes on. Encounters with certain strange space cubes, for example, or an exploding Romulan sun.

What's most important to a good Star Trek game?

This setup does a great job of capturing the Star Trek universe, and on replays, you have the added benefit of having a good idea of where some of the Minor Powers are (though that does change somewhat from run to run). The downside is that it takes a bit for each new playthrough to actually feel “new,” which puts a little bit of a damper on the initial replayability.

Once you get going, though, things are like any other grand strategy game – in other words, you’ll manage a lot of spreadsheets. Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of strategy in this grand strategy game. You’ll colonize planets, construct fleets, mine and manage resources, build your relationships with other powers, recruit leaders, research technology, and boldly go where no one has gone before, but you do all of it by clicking through menus. As in most grand strategy games, however, the appeal is in the larger choices you make to guide your faction, not necessarily the moment-to-moment unit management. StarCraft this ain’t. With so much to keep track of, it’s easy to get overwhelmed, but thankfully you can pause and take your time to think out each move, and all of these systems combine for a compelling, unique take on the 4X formula.

The combat in Infinite doesn’t have the same depth to make it as engaging. Usually, the only thing you have to do to win a battle is build a larger force than your opponent and throw it at them until they surrender. To be fair, and despite what the J.J. Abrams reboot trilogy might try to tell you, Star Trek isn’t really about ships shooting at each other with phasers and photon torpedoes – but it is kind of a bummer that there’s not more variety to break up all the menu management.

One of the best additions to the genre, however, is the Mission Tree – a series of branching events you can complete to take your civilization down different paths. For example, gather enough alloy as the Federation and you can build the Enterprise; if you’re playing the Romulans and on good terms with the Federation, they might help you when your sun starts dying, which opens a different path on the tree. The tree also offers some alternate “non-canonical” paths: wanna take the Federation down to the dark side and conquer the other powers? You can, and the Mission Tree will reward you for doing so.

Unfortunately, the Federation’s tree is the only one with any interesting choices. Most of the Mission Trees for the other factions allow you to choose between reforming the worst parts of their culture or being slaveholders and warmongers who’d set a box of kittens on fire with a flamethrower, light cigars off of their smoking corpses, and then read their lines with a level of menace reserved for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Khan in Star Trek: Into Darkness . It’s a very binary “Are you a good witch or a bad witch?” kind of progression, but it does add a nice narrative flow to each run and constantly gives you something to shoot for while rewarding you for playing your faction a certain way.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “But Will, this sounds alright! What was with that negative opening paragraph? I was expecting things to be way worse!” Well, dear reader, that’s because we haven’t talked about the bugs yet. Star Trek: Infinite was buggy when I previewed it back in September, but it was one of those things I chalked up to playing a pre-release build. Surely it would get better by launch, right? Wrong. It got worse . I’m not often one to hang my hat on whether or not a game is buggy, but Infinite is one of the buggiest games I have ever played, to the point where entire systems simply did not work in the review build.

Some of these bugs are minor. For instance, occasionally the in-game notifications would tell me one of my leaders had died, so I’d frantically tab through them, wondering what had happened. Had I sent a science vessel to explore a hostile area? Were they claimed by old age? An accident? Nope. Infinite just played the wrong voice line for an entirely unrelated notification like some sort of cruel prank. Annoyances like this happen all the time.

Occasionally whole mechanics will bug out as well, like when you initiate First Contact with an alien race. You’re essentially racing to see if you can make contact with them before they can make contact with you, and if they beat you to it, you simply don’t get as many rewards from the post-race resolution. This is supposed to end the First Contact section of your relationship with that race and let you interact with them normally from then on, but sometimes they’ll beat you to it, you’ll resolve that outcome, and then Infinite will act like you actually won the race and force you to resolve that outcome, too.

I could live with these smaller issues if they were the only things wrong with Infinite. Unfortunately, they aren’t. No, the real, glaring problem I consistently encountered is that the process for integrating new cultures into your empire always ceases to function after a certain point in a given run, often leaving my progress severely hindered when I was already a dozen or more hours deep.

I’ve played most of my Infinite runs as a pacifist, peacefully befriending and integrating other cultures into my civilization of choice, and only using combat as a last resort. But after a while, when I start the process with one of my Envoys, nothing happens. When I previewed Infinite, there was a little bar that would fill up and tell me how fast it was happening. Now? My Envoy just stays there forever. That means I’m not only locked out of expanding my empire the way I want to, I also can’t complete certain missions on the Mission Tree. After hours and hours, that save file essentially becomes useless. And this happens every time . No amount of starting a new run, verifying my files, uninstalling and reinstalling, or anything else has made a difference.

Similarly, the notifications you get can sometimes be disastrously wrong rather than just annoyingly so. Once, I found myself drawn into a war with the Klingons because they attacked my ally. Every pop-up and every in-game bar was telling me we were winning, but shortly thereafter, my ally surrendered. Another time, the Federation was having an election. I put my weight behind my current leader, but despite having far more popularity than any other candidate (I checked), he lost. I’m also fairly sure I’m not supposed to be able see the Casus Belli (the reasons each faction has for going to war with another faction, or any claims they hold on other factions) that absolutely every faction can use on every other faction next to each Major and Minor Power’s name when I open the Contact page, especially when no one has used any of them to make a claim. Even if I am supposed to be able to, it’s a little weird when the civilizations in question are openly hostile to me and I have no other information on them.

The list goes on. Sometimes tooltips have placeholder text. At a certain point I stopped being able to even open the ship designs menu, which allows you to take a ship class blueprint and slap on all the upgrades you get from the research your scientists have done. It’s fun to be able to tailor your ships to your playstyle, and it means your older ships are still useful later on… or at least it was until I inexplicably lost access to it anymore. When I reinforce my fleets, new ships get added to their own fleet instead of to the fleet they’re supposed to be reinforcing. All these issues together become maddening. There’s a good grand strategy game in here somewhere, but right now, I can barely play it.

Star Trek: Infinite does a great job of capturing the look and feel of Star Trek, but those enticing bones splinter under the weight of its bugs and glitches. Each Major Power feels distinct, Mission Trees add choices and story elements to encourage you to roleplay your faction a certain way, and the consistent date and map set-up provides room for experimentation and familiarity in each new run. But that doesn’t matter much if none of it works properly. I have yet to play a single game where I haven’t encountered a backbreaking bug that either halts my progress entirely or cuts me out of fundamental features, whether that’s integrating another civilization into my own or simply building my ships. The end result often feels a lot more like The Original Series than The Next Generation. You can see the promise here, but it’s held back by so many problems that it can be hard to enjoy. Maybe these issues will get patched and sorted out with time, but right now this is a journey into the unknown you’re better off avoiding.

The best Star Trek MMORPG on mobile. The best Star Trek Experience since the one in Vegas shut down. Seriously, until someone makes a Star Trek dungeon crawler or top-down tactical game, this is as good a Star Trek mobile game as you will ever get. A little limited in visual frills (I’d love to see the interior of the Romulan ship my crew is moving through!) but that opens up the possibilities of the game. The feeling of command is real because you are choosing the right crew to send on away missions. You are responsible for training and advancing them. I’d like to see real faction events, where not only can you support just one faction, but you can only use crew from one faction. Imagine a true Klingon vs Federation event. But overall, the best mobile Trek game there is, or is likely to be. Graphics are top notch on my iPhone 7 and iPad Pro. I’ve found support (through the website, submitting a ticket) to be great. Some delays when there is heavy traffic. Could do with new episodes though. PLEASE. All in all, the most all encompassing Trek experience you’ll find on mobile.
I love Star Trek so much! I grew up on it which is why I want this game to be everything. It has a lot going for it but it is sorely lacking in some areas. First, it seems like the developers do not care about their customers and how much Star Trek means to them. There are some shady things going on. For instance, they have an arbitrary cap of 1,000 unique items and after 7 days if you are over that limit they start deleting your inventory. What they haven’t told anyone is that even if you try and build something to use up the unique inventory there is a bug that won’t use up lower level items. They are shady. The gauntlet is another aspect of shadiness. It is so rigged that even if you should beat the other player you don’t especially if it is the third time when your supposed to get a gift. Second, this is a collecting game even if the developers don’t want to admit it. People are here, collecting the cards and the developers are milking every sucker for all the money in the universe. It’s tempting. We love Star Trek and want the characters. Slow down on the introductions. Third, the ship schematics are useless and are just sitting there taking up space. Plus, they are a common get in packs which is annoying. Figure out additional ways of using them. In summation, I love Star Trek and I like this game. Just fix the issues and make it seem like you care about the fan base and customers.
I m a big fan of Star Trek and this game is just great. I've taken off two stars for two reasons. I'm a beginner and as a beginner the game is daunting with no real explanation of how things are best done. For instance when I get to the start of a ship battle some tips or information comes on the screen but disappears too quickly, so I get the first three words, not very helpful. The other star is because as someone who thinks logically, I know I'm never going to own this game so if I ever spend real money on it, it would have to be for a very good reason and it's not likely, so when I see the characters and boosts available to the players willing to spend it's frustrating. I get it that you have to make money and I'm really glad some people will spend, but it's still frustrating. Because of the fact that I'm a beginner when I entered my first event I was completely under prepared, I still have entered into some of the contests, but good grief I get plastered which is very discouraging. I'm really impressed that these reviews are actually responded to and as a big fan of Star Trek I will keep playing and see where it goes, I also think it should be as enjoyable to a solo player as it can be to a social player- there are plenty of people who like staying solo. Thanks for creating this game and making it available to players like me (with virtually stitched pockets!) :-))

In 2016, Paradox released Stellaris , its first space-based 4X grand strategy game. It allowed players to take on the role of an upstart interstellar empire, establish colonies, manage their government, forge alliances, and crush their enemies. The game’s galaxy was vast and robust, but, as Polygon’s own Charlie Hall pointed out in his initial review , it was also fairly generic, a weakness that the modding community has sought to rectify by applying the aesthetics and history of their own favorite space operas overtop of it, such as Star Wars, Mass Effect, and of course, Star Trek. Not to be outdone, Paradox and developer Nimble Giant have been creating an officially licensed Star Trek 4X game, Star Trek: Infinite . Paradox offered me the opportunity to preview the game over Labor Day weekend, and those four days melted away.

Stellaris players will immediately recognize much of Star Trek: Infinite ’s interface and basic gameplay, down to the keyboard shortcuts. You begin by selecting your faction and expanding your immediate circle of influence across a two-dimensional galactic map, surveying and colonizing local star systems, developing new technologies and relationships with your neighbors. Depending on your faction, your goal may be to build partnerships, annihilate obstacles, or something in between.

As the decades pass and your empire grows, your responsibilities become more complex and varied, from keeping your sprawling population employed to defending your borders against hostile invasion. Conflict is inevitable and defeat is an expected part of the process, as power dynamics shift over the course of centuries. The constant juggling of tasks and the ability to shrug off the odd failure make for a compelling combination that I suspect will keep players glued to their seats for hours on end.

The things that make Star Trek: Infinite hard to put down are mainly inherited from Stellaris ; however, producer Mats Holm flatly rejects the notion that Star Trek: Infinite is a mere branded module.

“We split off from the Stellaris main branch quite a while ago,” says Holm. “The Stellaris team is completely focused on making every possible sci-fi theme that you can imagine, put into one game. On Star Trek: Infinite , we want to make the ultimate Star Trek fantasy. We want it to be very bespoke.”

While Stellaris certainly provides the foundational mechanical elements, Infinite ’s gameplay experience is shaped by its Star Trek setting. Rather than offering a dozen different playable empires with subtly different play styles, Infinite narrows your options to four major powers with conflicting philosophies. The United Federation of Planets is driven by scientific advancement and intergalactic cooperation. The Klingon Empire is a warrior culture that relishes in battle and conquest. The Romulan Empire prefers a more subtle approach to statecraft, utilizing spies and propaganda to keep their enemies off balance. The Cardassian Union is a cunning military dictatorship whose economy relies on slave labor and vassal states.

Conveniently, these four bodies also happen to be neighbors in the Star Trek canon, and each of them has been both ally and enemy to every other over the course of the franchise’s long fictional history. In a change from Stellaris , each empire’s gameplay is guided by a unique mission tree that rewards you for keeping your faction on brand and on task, or for making certain radical departures from the canon. Certain events are set in stone, such as the Borg invasion or the destruction of the Romulan sun, but the rest depends on your skill as well as your whims, and should your imagination fail you, the mission tree is there to point you to your next goal. Each faction has canonical and counter-canonical branches on the mission tree (will you play the Federation at its most benevolent, or give in to its more paranoid, martial tendencies?), but in either case, you’re encouraged to lean into your character.

Infinite ’s creative leads chose the game’s major factions and temporal setting very deliberately, beginning gameplay in 2340, about 20 years before the beginning of Star Trek: The Next Generation . This is an era during which all four player empires are evenly matched, generally stable, and will see a lot of conflict in ensuing decades. Infinite ’s first unavoidable event is the Khitomer Massacre, a Romulan sneak attack against the Klingons whose political ramifications reverberate throughout The Next Generation . The merciless Cardassian occupation of Bajor, a peaceful world that also shares a border with the Federation, is well underway. Rumors grow of strange cubical starships full of cybernetic zombies, looming just outside of known space. If you were going to design an original universe for a space conquest game, you might very well come up with a status quo like this one, and it just happens to be the beginning of the most prolific and popular era of an iconic franchise.

“Choosing the time period was a pretty big discussion,” says game director Ezequiel Maldonado. “We felt The Next Generation was the best fit, because that series is very focused on what’s happening on the Enterprise and not too much of what’s happening in the universe, but you get just a glimpse of what’s happening on a diplomatic scale. For us, it was a perfect starting point for a grand strategy game.”

“Once you choose the TNG era, you sort of have to include the Klingons, Romulans, and Cardassians,” adds programming director Andres Ricardo Chamarra. “Apart from late seasons of Deep Space Nine , the metapolitical stuff happens around the series, but it doesn’t happen in the series, so the player has to use their imagination.”

Setting the game in this familiar galaxy isn’t without its drawbacks. Unlike in Stellaris , where the geography of the galaxy is randomized at the start of each game, the relative positions of the powers in Star Trek: Infinite are fixed to something approximating the canonical star map. Anomalies and obstacles are scattered across the map to create some variety, but for the most part, replays of Infinite take an hour or two to become dramatically different from one another.

The diversity of the galaxy itself is also hampered by the limitations of its source material. All of the major and minor powers you encounter are, as in the TV show, humanoids with slightly different bumpy foreheads. The consistent geography might help you to remember what part of space belongs to which empire, but if you don’t know a Ktarian from a Talarian, that’s not much help. For Star Trek fans, however, pre-investment can sweeten the experience, as many of the societies you meet or planets you settle will have a deeper meaning than their practical value in the game. There is no specific advantage to giving Benjamin Sisko command of one of your fleets, but you’ll probably keep a more watchful eye on him than on NPCs with randomly generated names.

As in Stellaris , warfare is easily the most underwhelming element of Star Trek: Infinite . While seasoned strategy gamers may find more interesting ways to maneuver their forces, for the most part, winning a battle in Infinite merely depends on amassing a larger force than your opponent, and military might is merely another resource for the player to manage. That being said, combat has never been the most important element of Star Trek on screen, and given the habit of Star Trek games to disproportionately focus on violence (particularly during Activision’s time with the license in the 2000s), lackluster action is certainly forgivable. In Infinite , just as in most Star Trek, the future is built at the negotiating table, not on the battlefield.

For longtime players of Stellaris who have kept up with its expansions and mods, whether or not Star Trek: Infinite is worth a separate purchase will likely depend on the price point. (Paradox certainly hopes to court this audience, going so far as to invite the creators of the popular Star Trek: New Civilisations mod to playtest Infinite and give notes.) But, for strategy fans who are not already bought in — particularly Trekkies — Star Trek: Infinite is already promising. Even in its pre-release state, Infinite is an abyss into which you can easily lose yourself for days at a time, and given the studio’s track record of expansions and extended game life cycles, it’s likely to get a lot deeper.

Star Trek: Infinite will be released on Oct. 12 on Mac and Windows PC.

Interplay announced Thursday the release of the games, including Star Trek 25th Anniversary , originally published in 1992, and its sequel, Star Trek: Judgement Rites , published in 1993. Both of those games are available for Mac, Linux and Windows. A third game, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , is available for Windows. All games are DRM-free, so you can copy or archive them off your machine and not worry about having to activate them online.

The two multi-platform Star Trek games are point-and-click adventure games based on the original series. You man away teams on alien worlds and control the Enterprise's weapons, shields and communications during space missions.

Star Trek 25th Anniversary features the voice talents of the entire original Star Trek core cast of actors, including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols. The musical score and sound effects are also derived from the original Star Trek television series.

Judgement Rites is a sequel featuring eight new "episodes" also featuring the original voice actors, sound effects and music. Starfleet Academy was originally published in 1997. It's a simulation game featuring full-motion video and 3D graphics, but it only runs on Windows.

Just released last week, and already in Porting Kit: Star Trek – Bridge Commander for Mac! Yes, we got some e-mails when the release was announced of a bunch of Star Strek games on GOG.com. So we requested the games from GOG, and today I am proud to announce the first and high demanded one: Star Trek – Bridge Commander . I tested the game and it works great on my Intel based Macbook Pro. I will test the game on Apple Silicon as well, but when writing this, this still needs to be tested. Hello! I am really struggling to get this to work. I have an M1 MacBook Pro. I have followed the steps but the game shows a blank black screen when loading and does not change. Can anyone help? Thank you!!

I am having the same problem, I have an M1 Mac and the screen just turns black.

This is a low resolution game and the latest Apple silicon macs don’t support the low resolution (640×480/800×600/1024×768 anymore), did you try to connect your mac to an external (non-4k) display ad see if it works in there? We are already working on fixes for these games using patches/fixes/mods etc, but these ae most of the time game specific and costs time.

I’m having the same problem on a 2021 MacBook Pro M1. I’m using an external monitor that I can change to 1024×768 and 800×600, and it’s the same problem – screen turns black, then back to normal with no game launching.

Paradox's grand strategy Star Trek Infinite will receive no further updates

Just months after release

Paradox have a reputation for updating their games in perpetuity, with both free patches and DLC, even if players would rather they stopped. Star Trek Infinite is bucking that trend, it seems.

The grand strategy game was released last year and has only received a few patches since, and now it's been confirmed that it will receive no further updates.

"Sadly, we must inform you that Star Trek: Infinite will not receive further updates," reads the announcement on March 27th, alongside some pablum thanking everyone and everything for their support.

Players on Steam aren't feeling so supportive, where already 'mixed' reviews have fallen sharply into 'overwhelmingly negative'. Ctrl+F "abandoned" to clock the eleven uses of the word on the first page.

Star Trek Infinite ? "Mr. Simpson, this is the most blatant case of false advertising since my suit against the film 'The Neverending Story'," as Lionel Hutz would say.

Sin seemed to be having a good time in her Star Trek Infinite review , while carrying plenty of complaints.

And yet... I recorded all these complaints with a detached sort of "hmm" rather than major frustration. It's one of the most low-stress strategy games I've played this year, and its detail comprehensible once you've picked up the stone it's hiding under. It's a combination of engaging and undemanding that grand strategy seldom manages, and has enough Trek stuff to work for someone who's seen most of the serieseses but only once, and can only sometimes tell if something's a reference to an episode or wholly new. How the boon of such a familiar setting will stand against the weight of that setting's expectations I do not know, but if you go in wanting an enjoyable game that you kind of already know, Infinite will be a pleasant little surprise.

Which only makes it more of a shame that there won't be more of it and that players feel frustrated by the experience.

I've played plenty of Star Trek games over the years and I've loved a couple, but I'm not sure any of them have been great . I loved Star Trek: Armada mostly because the ship stats were all held in text files so it was trivially easy to mod the game and construct a fleet of undefeatable Enterprises.

In this age of universes colliding, a peek into another way events could have gone is nothing new. Starfleet generally has regulations on technology from other universes crossing into our own, but there’s a few backdoors that have been used by enterprising Starfleet Captains. The results of one such loophole bring us a ship that many never thought they’d see in action: The Constitution II, of the Kelvin Timeline. You'll have the chance to get this ship when you open an Infinity Crafting Pack or Infinity Duty Officer pack on PC from  April 11th at 8am PT to May 2nd at 12pm PT.

This successor to the ill-fated U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701), which was lost in the Altamid nebula, was envisioned as being one of the most advanced ships in Starfleet for its time. Purpose-built for exploration of that selfsame nebula, it has been outfitted with cutting-edge navigational sensor equipment as well as impressive maneuverability for a ship of its size. This defensive countermeasure was developed in direct response to the Altamid Drone Swarm attack which destroyed the U.S.S. Enterprise within the dense nebula near Yorktown Station. The devastation caused by those unanticipated hull-to-hull contacts can now (hopefully) be remedied. This technology sets up a harmonic resonance between the interior of the ship’s deflector shields, and a polarized hull plating, allowing the ship’s phaser emitters to “bounce” energy around between them, resulting in a field of devastation that is intended to be deadly to enemy vessels caught in its emissions. Increasing the ship’s impulse speed results in a natural increase in the harmonization potential, further amplifying the phaser damage potential.

This console also provides a passive increase to Phaser Damage, Flight Speed and Turn Rate.

Starship Trait - Gravitational Nexus

Adapted from the complex gravitational technology used at Yorktown Station, this artificial nexus can generate gravitational eddies to aid in the flight of starships, projectiles, and exotic particles that are attuned to the gravitational fields being generated.

Activating any Bridge Officer Anomaly ability will simultaneously deploy an Artificial Gravitational Nexus at the location of the target. Allies within 5km of this Nexus will receive increased Flight Speed and Maneuverability, as well as Bonus Damage with Exotic Damage Abilities, and Projectile Weapons.

This buff extends to the 24 allies nearest to the Nexus in the affected area, including summoned allies, hangar pets, targetable torpedoes, and mines.

Star Trek Fleet Command is based on the popular multimedia franchise , and players will be familiar with the ships, systems, and crew members they can recruit. However, building up all these various items and recruiting people will take a lot of effort. This can be reduced by using various codes to get some items for free , and the active codes for April 2024 will be listed below.

W hile the Playmates line of Star Trek figures may have not lasted as long as we had all hoped for, modern fans are still getting a lot of great new things to spend their income on, namely video games. A whole host of new games have come out over the years recently and for the first time since the early 2000s, Trek fans have a whole list of things to play.

Since Star Trek: Discovery launched as show, we've gotten PC games like Star Trek: Timelines, console and PC ports of Star Trek: Prodigy: Supernova, Star Trek: Resurgence, Star Trek Bridge Crew, Star Trek: Online, and on mobile we've had Star Trek Trek: Timelines, Star Trek: Trexels II, Star Trek Fleet Command and Star Trek: Legends.

That doesn't even count the latest game that came out in October of 2023, Star Trek: Infinite, a computer game that was described as a "grand strategy video game". The game had mixed reviews, landing a 6/10 on Steam and mostly getting viewed as mediocre.

The lack of hype and support by the fandom has caused the publisher of the game, Paradox Interactive, to stop any further support for the game going forward. It was announced this week that the game would no longer have any updates going forward, a sign that the game is likely dead in the water.

There's always a chance that a sudden influx of new players and an increase in sales would cause Paradox Interactive to rethink its stance, but that doesn't happen usually. The developer made sure to go on and talk about their experiences with the game and the people who worked on it, saying via a forum post;

"Today, we bring news regarding the future of Star Trek: Infinite, a journey we’ve embarked on together with a lot of excitement. Sadly, we must inform you that Star Trek: Infinite will not receive further updates. We want to extend our gratitude to those who have been the backbone of this journey. To the incredible team at Nimble Giant whose dedication and creativity made Star Trek: Infinite a reality. Working alongside such a talented group has been a privilege."

It's a shame that the game is already dead after just releasing in October, but luckily this seems to be an outlier in current Trek games, so it shouldn't affect the franchise too badly.

Penn Engineers Recreate Star Trek’s Holodeck Using ChatGPT and Video Game Assets

Using everyday language, users can prompt Holodeck to generate a virtually infinite variety of 3D spaces, which creates new possibilities for training robots to navigate the world. (Yue Yang)

In Star Trek: The Next Generation , Captain Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise leverage the holodeck, an empty room capable of generating 3D environments, to prepare for missions and to entertain themselves, simulating everything from lush jungles to the London of Sherlock Holmes . Deeply immersive and fully interactive, holodeck-created environments are infinitely customizable, using nothing but language: the crew has only to ask the computer to generate an environment, and that space appears in the holodeck.

Today, virtual interactive environments are also used to train robots prior to real-world deployment in a process called “Sim2Real.” However, virtual interactive environments have been in surprisingly short supply. “Artists manually create these environments,” says Yue Yang , a doctoral student in the labs of Mark Yatskar and Chris Callison-Burch , Assistant and Associate Professors in Computer and Information Science (CIS), respectively. “Those artists could spend a week building a single environment,” Yang adds, noting all the decisions involved, from the layout of the space to the placement of objects to the colors employed in rendering.

Enter Holodeck , a system for generating interactive 3D environments co-created by Callison-Burch, Yatskar, Yang and Lingjie Liu , Aravind K. Joshi Assistant Professor in CIS, along with collaborators at Stanford, the University of Washington, and the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2). Named for its Star Trek forebear, Holodeck generates a virtually limitless range of indoor environments, using AI to interpret users’ requests. “We can use language to control it,” says Yang. “You can easily describe whatever environments you want and train the embodied AI agents.”

Rayner belongs to a species that made its debut in the lesser-known realm of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . Rayner, characterized by his rugged demeanor, resilience, and sharp intellect, is known as a war hero grappling with the challenges of transitioning to a peaceful existence post-Burn. Despite the hurdles, he remains steadfastly committed to upholding the principles of serving the common good.
