How to Check Your Australian Visa Application Status

Navigating the process of checking the status of your Australian visa application can be a challenging task, especially if you are unfamiliar with the systems used by the Australian Government's Department of Home Affairs. This guide aims to simplify this process, explaining step by step how to check your visa application status, primarily through the use of the ImmiAccount and the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system.

Navigating the process of tracking your Australia visa application status can often seem daunting. Whether you're applying for a tourist, student, or work visa, understanding the progress of your application is crucial. This guide simplifies this task by detailing how to effectively use the Australian Government's ImmiAccount and the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system. These tools are essential for anyone seeking to stay informed about their visa application status in Australia. By following the steps outlined, applicants can ensure a smoother and more transparent visa application process, leading to a more stress-free experience.

Understanding the Basics

Before diving into the specifics, it's crucial to understand the basics of the Australian visa process. When you apply for a visa to Australia, you are essentially asking for permission to enter and stay in the country for a specific purpose, such as tourism, study, work, or permanent residency. The Department of Home Affairs handles these applications and provides updates on application status through various online tools.

Understanding the Basics also involves familiarizing yourself with key platforms like ImmiAccount and Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO). These tools are integral to the Australian visa process. ImmiAccount is your primary portal for submitting and tracking your visa application, offering real-time updates and communications from the Department of Home Affairs. Once your visa is granted, VEVO allows you to verify your visa entitlements and conditions. Navigating these platforms efficiently is crucial for a smooth Australian visa application experience, ensuring you stay informed about your application status at every step.

Registering for an ImmiAccount

The first step in tracking your Australian visa application status is to create an ImmiAccount. This online account is the main portal for all visa-related services provided by the Australian Government. Here's how to set one up:

  • Visit the official website of the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
  • Look for the ImmiAccount registration link and create an account by providing necessary personal details.
  • Once your account is set up, you can log in to track your visa application status.

Submitting Your Visa Application

After creating your ImmiAccount, you can proceed to submit your visa application. This involves filling out the required forms, attaching necessary documents, and paying the visa application fees. Once submitted, your application will be processed, and you can begin tracking its progress.

Tracking Visa Application Status via ImmiAccount

With your visa application submitted, you can use ImmiAccount to check the status. Here's how:

  • Log in to your ImmiAccount.
  • Navigate to the ‘My Applications’ section.
  • Select the application you want to check.
  • The status of your application will be displayed, including stages like 'Submitted', 'In Progress', or 'Decided'.

Understanding Status Updates

Understanding status updates for an Australian visa application involves regularly checking the ImmiAccount or using the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system. These updates reflect the progress of your application, from 'Submitted' through 'In Progress', to the final 'Decided' stage. Regular monitoring of these platforms ensures you're up-to-date with your visa application status, helping you to effectively manage the next steps towards obtaining an Australian visa. If your application is taking longer than expected, or if the status is unclear, you might want to contact the Department of Home Affairs for clarification.

Using Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO)

Another tool to check your Australian visa application status is the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system.VEVO is an online service provided by the Australian Government, allowing visa holders, employers, and other registered organizations to check visa details and conditions. Once your Australian visa application is approved, you can access VEVO using your visa grant number, along with other personal details. It offers a quick, reliable way to verify your visa status, including its validity, conditions, and entitlements. This is particularly useful for checking visa details and conditions after your visa has been granted, facilitating a smoother experience in Australia for both visitors and residents.

How to Access VEVO

To access VEVO, you need to have your visa grant number, which is provided once your visa is approved. Here’s how to use VEVO:

  • Visit the VEVO page on the Department of Home Affairs website.
  • Enter your visa grant number along with other required personal details.
  • Once logged in, you can view your visa details, including validity, conditions, and entitlements.

Benefits of VEVO

It provides real-time updates on visa status, conditions, and entitlements, ensuring transparency and ease of access for applicants. Additionally, VEVO is crucial for employers and educational institutions in Australia to verify visa details, to ensure that your visa status is transparent and accessible. This tool simplifies the visa management process, making it an indispensable asset for anyone involved in Australia's immigration system.

Tips for a Smooth Application Process

Ensuring a smooth application process for your Australian visa requires careful attention to detail and adherence to guidelines.

  • First, create an ImmiAccount on the Australian Government's website. This platform is integral for submitting and tracking your Visa Application.
  • Double-check all documents for accuracy before submission to avoid delays.
  • Regularly monitor your Application Status through ImmiAccount, as this is where updates and requests from the Department of Home Affairs will appear.
  • If your visa is granted, use the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system to verify visa details and conditions.
  • Remember, prompt responses to any additional information requests can significantly expedite your application process.
  • Keep copies of all submitted documents for your records
  • Ensure all information provided in the application is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Be prepared to provide additional information or documents if requested.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

When checking your Australian visa application status through ImmiAccount or Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO), you might encounter issues.

  • Delays in Application Processing : Visa processing times vary depending on the type of visa and individual circumstances. Regularly check ImmiAccount for any updates.
  • Technical Issues with ImmiAccount or VEVO : If you encounter technical difficulties, try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser. If the problem persists, contact the Department of Home Affairs.
  • Common problems include login difficulties, delayed updates, or error messages. To resolve these, first, ensure your login credentials are correct.

Staying patient and persistent is key in efficiently managing and resolving these common obstacles.

Checking the status of your Australian visa application is an essential part of the visa process. By utilizing ImmiAccount and VEVO, applicants can stay informed about their application status and ensure that they comply with all visa conditions. Remember, patience and attention to detail are key in navigating the complexities of visa application processes.

Australian visa application processing times

Here are the key points about Australian visa application processing times:

  • The visa application processing times are updated monthly.
  • For most visa categories, the processing times are available, excluding visas subject to capping and queueing, or those which have a low volume of applications.
  • The processing times depend on the period of visa applications finalised recently.
  • Many applications which had been finalized were on-hand for some months while borders were closed.
  • Once borders reopen, more applicants will be able to enter Australia, while many of the applications are being finalized.
  • During the Covid-19 travel restrictions, applications of individuals eligible for a travel exemption were prioritized, such as students, humanitarian workers.
  • The Government of Australia publishes processing times in calendar days for 25, 50, 75, and 90 percent of applications finalised in the period.

Processing times include applications filed online as well as by paper. You should make your best efforts to file your visa application online. It helps streamline processing arrangements.

Covid-19 processing consideration

The Australian Government is doing its level best to process the applications of travelers who are exempt from travel restrictions, such as individuals working in sectors critical to Australia’s economic recovery due to unavailability of Australian workers, students, humanitarian workers, people employed in occupation on the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL), etc.

You can visit the Home Affairs’ COVID website for more information on travel restrictions and visa information.

How do I check my Australian visa status?

Sep 24, 2019 | Blog

australian visa status

If you have lodged a visa, it is very simple to check your Australian visa status. There are several different ways in which you can check your visa status.

Check through the Visa Entitlement Verification Online system (VEVO)

You will usually be able to check your visa status through VEVO . This is generally the easiest way to check your Australian visa status. You will usually only need your passport details and you should be able to check. VEVO will show many things including:

  • The current visa you hold
  • The date the visa was lodged
  • Your work rights
  • Your study rights
  • Other visa conditions

Australian employers and other parties can also check your Australian visa status, including work rights. In order to do this, you would need to provide the other person with the required information.

Check through your Immi Portal

If you lodged your visa through your Immi portal, you can also check your Australian visa status of your application through your immi portal . Please note if you used a migration agent to lodge your visa, your application will only show up in the companies immigration portal (not in yours). Therefore you will need to check your visa status through VEVO.

Contact Immigration on the Phone

If you cannot check your visa status through VEVO or through your Immi portal, you can contact immigration over the phone. Please note this would be the last resort, as you can expect to wait on hold for a long time. You can contact immigration in Australia on 131 881.

What if my visa is taking longer than expected to process?

Australian has many different visas . Each visa has a separate processing time and recently almost all Australian visa processing times have blown out.

Some visas may take longer than expected. This is not necessarily a bad sign for your application. Often immigration may be expecting a higher number of applications than the case officer can process. You can contact immigration over the phone to check the status, but will often only be told that the application is processing and you will be contacted by immigration shortly. Patience is a virtue.

If you have any questions regarding your specific visa status and would like to speak to a qualified migration agent, feel free to book a consultation with Pathway to Aus:

Checking the Status of an Australian Visa Online

check australia visa status

Travellers using Australia’s convenient online visa system may need to check the status of their visa or travel authorisation . These queries may be for one of the following reasons:

  • To check the **status of a visa application** that is in progress
  • To find out if a **visa used for a previous trip** is still valid

It is possible to check the ETA status for Australia online while the application is being processed, without having to contact immigration authorities by phone. Please note that it is only possible to complete the check if you obtained your Australia ETA through this website .

How can I check the status of my Australian ETA or eVisitor?

The simplest way to check the status of your Australian ETA or eVisitor visa is to take a look at your emails . As part of the quick online Australian visa application , you must register an email address. All correspondence regarding the status of the ETA will be sent to this inbox . To perform an Australian visa status enquiry, applicants for an ETA can simply check their inbox for emails informing them about the processing status of the electronic authority .

The different Australia ETA and eVisitor application statuses

There are 3 possible statuses of an Australia ETA or eVisitor visa application. According to the stage of processing and the result of the application, you will receive an email indicating that your application is one of the following:

After submitting the ETA form, you can expect to receive an email advising you that your request has been received and that the application is ‘Pending’ .

Soon after, you can expect to receive an email stating that the ETA is either ‘Approved’ or ‘Denied’ .

If approved, you will then be able to print out a copy of the attached approved Australian ETA to carry with you to present when boarding transportation and at border control upon arrival.

If the ETA / eVisitor is denied , it will be necessary to submit a new electronic application and receive approval before reaching Australia.

Why should I check my ETA status?

You may want to check your status after submitting the eVisitor / ETA application to ensure that processing for the travel authority is underway and you will receive their granted ETA in enough time before your departure for Australia.

It takes up to 2 days for an ETA to be processed (and approved in 90% of cases). In the rare case of any delays, this may take longer, so the traveller may wish to check which stage of the process the application is in.

Why is my Australia ETA /eVisitor application status still “pending”?

It is highly unlikely that an application will be pending for more than 2 days.

Delays in ETA processing may occur because of an issue with the application, such as the following:

  • The applicant has not uploaded all the necessary supporting documents according to the Australia visa requirements
  • The application form contained small errors in the data provided

In such cases, the applicant will be notified of this by email and prompted to provide the missing documents or information.

Why has my Australia ETA /eVisitor application been denied?

The vast majority of Australian online visa applications are approved without any issues. In the rare case that a visa is denied, it may be for the following reasons :

  • Errors or inconsistencies in the data provided
  • Failure to meet Australia’s health or character requirements

Those who plan to travel to Australia but have a criminal record with more than 1 year of jail time served are not likely to have their ETA application approved, as they do not meet the character requirements for the Australian online visa. However, they will be able to apply for an Australia visitor visa or another visa type from an embassy.

How can I check the validity of my Australia ETA authority?

Applicants for an ETA are able to check the validity of the Australian visa authority by checking the expiry date on the PDF copy of the ETA sent to their email inbox upon approval.

What is my Australia ETA online visa expiry date?

The Australian ETA visa waiver is valid for 12 months from the date of approval and issue. Therefore, it will expire exactly one year to the day from the day the traveller receives their approved ETA.

If the passport which they use to apply expires before this time, the ETA will no longer be valid.

This is because an approved ETA is electronically linked to one individual passport , which will be scanned upon arrival in Australia to check the validity of the travel authority.

It is important not to overstay in Australia on an ETA, as this may incur fines or other penalties. The visitor must also inform the Australian Immigration Authority if any of the key information provided on the ETA form changes , including their phone number, email address, or relationship status.

Other ways to verify the eTA Australia status

If, for whatever reason, you do not receive any emails about the status of the Australian ETA within the standard 2-day period of processing time, you can submit a contact form to request an update.

On the form, you must specify the nature of your enquiry, as well as provide the following information:

  • Email address
  • Passport number
  • Passport country of issue

Those who submit an ETA contact form can expect to receive a response within 72 hours. However, before submitting a form, applicants are advised to check the spam section of the email inbox in case the eVisitor or ETA status updates have accidentally been sent to this folder.

Requirements for your Australia Visa check

To check the status of your Australian visa, you'll typically need the following:

Personal identification: This includes your full name, date of birth, and nationality as per your passport.

Passport or travel document: The passport or travel document you used when applying for your visa. Ensure it's the same, as visa records are often linked to passport numbers.

Reference number: This can be the Transaction Reference Number (TRN), provided when you submit your visa application online, or your visa grant number, given to you when your visa is approved.

Official Australian government channels for visa status verification

The Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) platform is the primary channel provided by the Australian Government for visa holders to check their visa status online . It lets you view your current visa details, including type, validity period, and conditions. VEVO can be accessed through its website or by using the myVEVO app, available on both the Apple iTunes and Google Play stores.

Alternatively, you can visit or contact the nearest Australian embassy or consulate , especially if you're overseas. You'll need to provide your personal identification and possibly other details related to your visa application.

Contacting the Department of Home Affairs via phone is also an option. However, this might involve longer wait times.

Online platforms for visa status checks

Apart from using the VEVO platform, these are the other ways you can check your visa status online:

iVisa: If you applied for your Australian visa through our website or iVisa app , we provide an easy way to track the progress and current status of your visa. We'll ensure that you're always up to date with your Australian visa status, providing peace of mind and the ability to plan your stay or travel in Australia confidently.

ImmiAccount ImmiAccount is a user-friendly portal where you can manage all your Australia visa-related tasks. It's designed to make your life easier by allowing you to apply for visas and citizenship, check the status of your application, and upload all the necessary documents for your visa application.

Step-by-step guide: Checking your Australian visa status

Here's how you can check the status of your Australian visa using VEVO and ImmiAccount.

Access VEVO online. If it's your first time using it, you may need to create an account.

Ensure you have all the necessary information, like your passport or ImmiCard details. You'll also need your Transaction Reference Number (TRN) or Visa Grant Number.

After logging into VEVO, enter your travel document details and one of the reference numbers mentioned above.

Once logged in, you can check your visa status and other relevant details.

Using ImmiAccount

Log in to your ImmiAccount. If you don't have one, you'll need to create an account first.

Navigate to your applications, where you can view the status of your visa application if you applied online.

Here, you can also find your visa grant number or TRN, especially if you applied for your visa through this account.

ImmiAccount allows you to manage various aspects of your application, including uploading documents and updating personal details.

Types of Australian Visa statuses

When you're keeping an eye on your Australian visa application, understanding the different types of statuses that can appear is key. Each status gives you a clear picture of where your application stands in the processing pipeline. Let's dive into what they mean:

Received: Right after you submit your application, this will likely be the first status you see. It simply means your application has been successfully received and is ready for the next processing stages.

In Process: This status means your application is under review. The authorities are reviewing your submitted documents and information, making sure everything is in order before deciding.

Finalized: This status pops up when a decision has been made on your application. It could mean approval or rejection, so you'll need to check further details to know the outcome.

Approved: This is the green light you've been waiting for. It means your application has met all the criteria, and you're all set for your Australian adventure. Once your visa is approved, you can start finalizing your travel plans.

Rejected: Facing a rejection can be disappointing. This status indicates that your application didn't meet the requirements or lacked adequate supporting documents. It's important to review the reasons for rejection carefully, as you might be able to reapply or provide additional information.

Common visa status issues

When applying for an Australian visa or checking your visa status, you may encounter a range of issues. Understanding how to address these problems can save you a lot of stress.

Incomplete information or documentation: One of the most common reasons for visa application delays or rejections is incomplete or missing information on the application. Double-check your application before submitting it. Make sure you have provided all necessary documents and filled every required field accurately. Keep a checklist of required documents handy.

Delays in processing: Sometimes, visa processing takes longer than expected due to high volumes of applications or other administrative reasons. Plan your application well in advance of your intended travel date. Regularly check your visa status online and be patient. If the delay seems unusually long, contact the Australian Department of Home Affairs for an update.

Technical difficulties with online services: Technical glitches can occur when using online platforms like ImmiAccount or VEVO. Try accessing the service using a different browser or device. Clear your browser's cache and cookies before trying again. If the problem persists, contact the technical support team for assistance.

Incorrect information provided: Providing incorrect details, whether unintentionally or otherwise, can lead to application delays or rejections. Review your application multiple times for accuracy. Ensure that all information matches the details in your official documents. If you realize you've made an error after submitting, contact the Department of Home Affairs immediately to correct it.

Understanding Australian visa types

Australia offers a wide range of visas tailored to different travel needs. Here's a breakdown of the main categories:

Visitor Visas: For tourism, business, or visiting family and friends. This includes the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) , Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601) , and eVisitor (Subclass 651) .

Family Visas: These allow Australian citizens, permanent residents, and eligible New Zealand citizens to sponsor family members. Key types include Partner Visa (Subclasses 820 and 801), Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300), Parent Visa (Subclass 103), and Contributory Parent Visa (Subclasses 173 and 143).

Student Visas: For those who want to study in Australia, the Student Visa (Subclass 500) is the most common.

Temporary Work Visas: These permit working in Australia temporarily under specific conditions. Examples are the Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482), Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417), and Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462).

Skilled Migration Visas: For individuals with specific skills, qualifications, or work experience in demand in Australia. This includes the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189), Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190), and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491).

Legal insights: Understanding the rights and responsibilities of visa holders in Australia

When planning a trip to Australia or considering a longer stay, it's crucial to understand the rights and responsibilities that come with your visa. Knowing these details can ensure your time in Australia is enjoyable and compliant with local laws, whether you're there to work, study, or enjoy the incredible landscapes and cities.

For work-related visa holders

Equal workplace rights: You're entitled to the same workplace rights as Australian citizens, including fair pay and safe working conditions.

Protection from discrimination: The Fair Work Act protects you against workplace discrimination.

Support from the Fair Work Ombudsman: If you encounter issues with workplace entitlements, you can seek help from the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Visa protection: Only the Department of Home Affairs can alter your visa status, not your employer.

For non-work visa holders

No unlawful work: If your visa doesn't allow work, you shouldn't engage in any employment.

Financial self-sufficiency: Ensure adequate funds to support your stay.

Health insurance: Some visas require maintaining health insurance.

General responsibilities for all visa holders

Compliance with visa conditions: Always adhere to the specific conditions of your visa.

Reporting changes: Inform the Department of Home Affairs about changes in your situation, like a new address or passport details.

Adhering to local, state, and federal laws: Abide by all Australian laws during your stay.

Leaving before visa expiry: Leave Australia before your visa expires unless you legally extend your stay.

The importance of regular visa status checks

When traveling or living abroad, keeping an eye on your visa status is more than just a formality; it's vital to ensuring a smooth and trouble-free experience. Here's why regular checks on the status of your visa are important:

Avoid overstaying: One of the most critical reasons to keep tabs on your visa status is to prevent overstaying. Knowing your visa's expiration date helps you plan your departure or next steps within the allowed timeframe, avoiding penalties or future travel restrictions.

Stay informed of changes: Immigration policies and regulations can change, sometimes with little notice. Regularly checking your visa status informs you of any changes that might affect your stay.

Legal compliance: Keeping track of your visa status ensures that you remain legally compliant with the immigration laws of the country you're in. This is crucial for avoiding legal complications that could arise from unintentional violations.

Plan ahead: Regular checks allow you to plan ahead, especially if you need to extend your visa, change its type, or take any other action regarding your immigration status. This is particularly important for those on long-term visas, such as student or work visas.

Maintain accurate records: By regularly checking your visa status, you can maintain accurate and up-to-date records of your immigration history. This can be beneficial for future visa applications or even permanent residency applications.

Dealing with visa expiry, renewals, and overstays

Navigating Australian visa issues such as expiry, renewal, and overstays can be daunting. Here's a guide on what to do in each of these scenarios:

Visa expiry

If you know your visa is about to expire, and you wish to stay in Australia, it's crucial to explore your options before you become unlawful. You have more visa pathways available if you're on a valid visa.

If less than 28 days have passed since your visa expired, you might be eligible for other visa types without facing a 3-year exclusion period . This period bars you from applying for any temporary Australian visa for 3 years after leaving the country. If you have a “no further stay condition” on your last visa, it must be waived by the Department of Home Affairs before you can lodge a new visa application.

If your visa has expired, you can be granted a Bridging Visa E (BVE) . This temporary and short-term visa allows you to stay lawful while making arrangements to leave Australia or resolving an immigration matter. However, the BVE comes with restrictions, like being unable to travel and limited work rights.

Visa renewal

Australian visas cannot be extended beyond their expiration date . If you wish to stay longer, you must apply for a new visa. Applying for this new visa before your current one expires is essential to staying lawful and enjoying your extended stay in Australia.

Visa overstays

If you're caught overstaying your visa, you may face detention and deportation. Overstaying can also lead to being barred from re-entering Australia for at least 3 years and incurring costs associated with your removal.

If you've overstayed and wish to leave, you won't be detained at the airport, but you may need to speak with immigration officers. It's advisable to leave voluntarily if you can't obtain a new visa.
