College Road Trip
When senior Melanie Porter (Raven-Symoné) plans a trip with her high school girlfriends to look at colleges, her police chief father (Martin Lawrence) is determined to keep her from straying too far from home. Hoping to convince her to attend a nearby school, he insists on accompanying her on the trip, but his hilariously over-the-top efforts to protect his little girl backfire in a multitude of sidesplitting ways. Add one small stowaway, an over-caffeinated pig and a busload of unexpected encounters and it all adds up to an unforgettably funny journey packed with enough high energy hijinks and humor to keep the entire family laughing.
Storyline: Our Reviewer's Take
Raven-Symoné is one of the few child stars who has defied the odds and maintained a successful career in the industry for over twenty years now. At the age of four, she first landed her big break as Olivia on ‘A Different World’ which blossomed into a pretty extensive reprise of that role on ‘The Cosby Show,’ and then went on to become one of Disney’s go-to girls for projects like ‘Kim Possible,’ ‘Cheetah Girls,’ and even her own TV series, ‘That’s So Raven.’ There comes a time, though, when every young actor or actress outgrows the cutesy factor and should move on to more adult-oriented material. I hate to say it, but that time unfortunately came for Raven-Symoné right before Disney’s ‘College Road Trip.’
In this G-rated comedy, Raven stars as Melanie Porter, a high school senior prepping for her next steppingstone in life — heading off to college. Melanie's overprotective father, Police Chief James Porter (Martin Lawrence), has it all worked out to keep his baby close to the nest. At a mere forty-minute drive, Northwestern University is the perfect campus and compromise, but when one of Melanie’s teachers pulls some strings and scores her an interview at the prestigious Georgetown ( seven hundred miles away from their Chicago home), daddy’s dreams of keeping the proverbial umbilical cord intact are shattered. With the future looking bleak for James, the only option left is to bite the bullet and escort Melanie to the meeting on a father-daughter road trip, doing whatever it takes to sway her decision along the way. Except we all know that when desperate times call for desperate measures, things don’t always go according to plan.
I can see what Disney was going for with ‘College Road Trip.’ It’s essentially a coming of age story, not just for Raven-Symoné’s character, but also for her father, who must come to terms with and accept his firstborn child sprouting into adulthood. The main problem, though, is everything is “dumbed down” so much the movie ends up having more of a “kiddie” vibe than it really should have had. It doesn’t help matters either when Raven approaches the role with an over-the-top cuteness and exaggerated expressions that may have worked well for her in her younger days, but felt out of place for a college-related film. The juvenile karaoke song on the bus is only one example of this identity crisis. I’m not a religious follower of teen shows by any means, however I’ve seen a few and the maturity level is usually quite a bit higher than how it’s presented here.
It was also tough to warm up to the other big names in the movie. Martin Lawrence made me smile a couple of times, but he never really settled into a singular character. Sometimes he was the tough head honcho of the police force and Porter family household, and other times he practically became Mr. Rogers. I was waiting for him to sit down and take off his sweater and shoes, and then slip on another indoor sweater and pair of shoes. The other one is Donny Osmond, whose character and his daughter are thrust in to annoy the heck out of the Porters and the viewers. Osmond basically plays a supped-up parody of himself, and I give the guy credit for being a good sport (check out Weird Al Yankovic’s “White and Nerdy” video for more self-spoofing), but it loses some of the impact when Lawrence’s character seems to shift back and forth from loathing him to loving him. It didn’t make much sense to me.
The movie then takes a bizarre turn when Melanie’s younger brother, a science-loving geek named Trey (Eshaya Draper), stows away with his pet potbelly pig Albert for the ride. Pretty well half of the film focuses on the outrageous escapades of this pig — how he’s trained to flush the toilet, can play chess and solve Rubik’s cubes, and gets his snout into all kinds of trouble — but with the movie’s short 83-minute runtime and the pig being such a leap from the rest of the story, it’s totally obvious it was filler. What’s even stranger is the little porker actually steals the show and even the folks at Disney must think so too, as virtually all of the clips running on the Blu-ray menu screen showcase scenes with the genius hog.
When it all was said and done, I had a hard time trying to figure out who the target audience was for this film. Was it for college bound teenagers like the title suggests? No, since the movie is so goofy and childish at times that I can’t see anyone in their late teens calling it “cool.” Is it for preteens then, perhaps? Not really, as kids might find some of the pig parts mildly amusing, but still probably wouldn’t have much interest in any of the college stuff. It most certainly isn’t for adults, as the humor is way too simple and way too safe. I think this is why ‘College Road Trip’ fails. It tries to appeal to the entire crowd, but in the end it doesn’t successfully zone in to any age group.
Video Review
‘College Road Trip’ parks on a BD-50 with a pristine 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 (2.40:1 aspect ratio) encode. Like most Disney/Buena Vista releases, this one is very colorful and vividly striking.
The transfer is very crisp and sharp, with an exceptionally bright color palette featuring bold primaries and lush greenery. The clothing really stands out, and a solid example of this is the reds, whites, and blues of the jumpsuits and helmets. Black levels also remain strong throughout and there’s a good presentation of depth that makes the picture “pop.” Skin tones are natural and highly detailed, and the hair on the pig and the damp sheen of his snout really stands out in high-definition. The image has a very faint layer of grain, but there is no noise and I didn’t catch any imperfections or instances of banding, edge-enhancement or other eyesores. Even though I didn’t care for the movie itself, the picture quality sure glistens and sparkles like Donny Osmond's smile.
Unfortunately, the U.S. release of ‘College Road Trip’ is region-locked and therefore will only play in Region A PlayStation 3, and standalone Blu-ray players.
Audio Review
The audio for the Blu-ray isn’t quite as impressive as the video, but the uncompressed English PCM 5.1 (48kHz, 24-bit) still holds its own.
This one is primarily front-channel heavy, and there’s plenty of dialogue that can always be heard with clarity from the center channel. As a comedy, there isn’t much bass going on here, although it’s occasionally put to work in some of the party music and when James hits the switch of the newly installed floodlights at grandma’s house. There’s also very little surround activity, except for some periodic drifting music, birds chirping, and most noticeable was the whizzing action of the golf cart duel sequence. Overall it doesn’t sound too bad, just don’t expect to be completely floored.
Additional lossy tracks in Dolby Digital 5.1 in English and French are also provided, as well as optional English SDH, French, and Spanish subtitles.
Special Features
The Blu-ray disc includes all of the supplemental material found on the standard-definition DVD release.
- Director and Actress Commentary – Director Roger Kumble and actress Raven-Symoné (who also serves as one of the producers) sit down together for an energetic and lively commentary. Raven giggles away and clearly has a blast participating while Kumble provides more informative comments about the Disney production.
- Writers’ Commentary – I was surprised to find a second audio commentary included on the disc, this time with writers Emi Mochizuki and Carrie Evans. This one is much drier and peppered with dead spots, so if commentaries are your thing go with the first one.
- Deleted Scenes (HD, 12:32) – A total of ten wisely excised deleted scenes with optional audio commentary from director Roger Kumble.
- Alternate Scenes (HD, 3:35) – Next we have an alternate opening sequence and a pair of very confusing alternate endings.
- Raven’s Video Diary (HD, 9:56) – Raven-Symoné wanders around the sets taking home movies of the other stars, the crew, and a few other surprises. Technically this isn’t entirely diary footage, as it alternates between Raven’s camerawork and another camera following her around which was weird.
- Gag Reel (HD, 2:47) – A really tame short series of outtakes. Some of the footage is unfinished with green screens in the background.
- Music Video: “Double Dutch Bus” (SD, 3:16) – A flashier MTV-style version of the song from the film.
- On the Set: Double Dutch Bus (HD, 3:27) – Basically a short “making of” featurette for the above music video covering some of the choreography, dancers, filming, etc.
- Sneak Peeks – Finally, we have a collection of trailers which include: 'Blu-ray Disc,' ‘ The Nightmare Before Christmas ,' 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,' ' Tinker Bell ,' and 'Disney Movie Rewards.'
’College Road Trip’ had good intentions trying to be fun-filled family flick, but falls short by taking a grown-up subject and downplaying it too far to make it uber kid-friendly, so ironically, it emerges as a film most of the family can’t enjoy. At least the one saving grace is that if you’re in desperate need of a movie suitable for all eyes and ears, it doesn’t get much safer than this. The Blu-ray sports fantastic video, acceptable audio, and there are enough supplements that one or two may spark someone’s interest. That being said, I’ve seen many better choices out there for G-rated content, so I’d have to say this one is skippable unless you are (or know) a diehard Raven fan.

The Film: 5 Disney proves once again that it can get behind a G-rated movie that is also well-acted, funny and intelligent, that doesn't preach its moral position at every possible turn, a movie that the entire family could safely enjoy – and, dare I say it: magical. Of course, I'm speaking of WALL-E, not College Road Trip.
There's nothing actually offensive about Martin Lawrence's latest comedy, it simply lacks imagination. I blush when I write this, but the funniest thing in CRT is a pair of white folks - a father and daughter act (played by Donnie Osmond – God bless 'im and Molly Ephraim) that reminded me of – this is going to sound strange! - Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd as exchange students meeting on the train in Trading Places. Lawrence is Police Chief James Porter. We don't ever get to know what sort of cop he is, but as an overprotective parent, he would make Nemo's dad blush. He and his considerably more mature wife (Kym Whitley) have two children: their very teenage daughter Melanie (an altogether too old looking, but properly adolescent-behaving Raven-Symon, in one of her less compelling screen performances) and young brother Trey, (Eshaya Draper, along with his winning smile, - no doubt practicing to take up Denzel's mantle when the time comes). And leave us not forget Trey's very smart pet pig, who has a habit of eyeballing the chief to the point of insomnia. The chief has worked things out for Melanie to attend Northwestern upon graduating high school so as to be as close to home as possible yet still offer the illusion that she is "away" at school. When Melanie gets a last-moment offer to apply to Georgetown in faraway Washington, the chief offers to drive her there, but has secretly put up various roadblocks designed to head her back to Northwestern and away from Georgetown. Melanie, no dummy, sees right through his strategy. But the chief is relentless in his pursuit of control, with the expected result, and the occasional smile from yours truly.
Image: 7/8.5 While nothing to write home about, the image here is trustworthy, just as it is uninteresting – but, then, it's very G-rated, as its look. It's not the sort of image that particularly benefits from HD, if for no other reason than so much of it is not especially cinematic – among other things, most of the movie is framed with unnecessary space at the left and right for easy 4:3 cropping, the sort of movie we used to call, disparagingly, made-for TV. All the same, it is fairly sharp, fairly coherent, and fairly good color – if not always honest. And having been made only yesterday, it's as clean as a pig's . . . whatever.
Audio & Music: 6/5 The uncompressed audio track is certainly clearer, more dynamic than the basic 5.1 DD, however a strange thing happens when "Double Dutch Bus," the one musical set piece (mercifully brief, I might add) comes into play: The entire sound stage is disembodied from the performance on screen; no one actually looks like they're singing. Yes, the audio mix certainly pumps up the bass and increases the layering effect, but once again it also let's us know, as musicals have often done for decades, that we have just moved into the studio for this segment of the program – only in staggeringly dynamic 5.1 Uncompressed Audio, the effect is not a happy one. I only hope that this level of disconnect doesn't become a trend with high-def audio.
Operations: 7 I couldn't help notice here and for Step Up 2 The Streets (released at the same time) that Buena Vista has reduced the number of compulsory previews and adverts by more than half. So don't go out for a burger and fries while things are loading this time. Except for it being a bit sluggish, as many Blu-rays are, in permitting return to the menu from any bonus feature, things are clearly laid out with directions for how to navigate so simple an adult can manage them.
Extras: 4 This little movie offers not one, but two audio commentaries, which is at least one more than it deserves – or so I thought at first until I considered its target audience whom I suspect will get a kick out of Roger and Raven's commentary. The menu description of "On the Set" – "Catch a glimpse of Raven-Symon and Donny Osmond during the shoot of "Double Dutch Bus" music video – is remarkable for its accuracy: a "glimpse" is just about it. In the "Double Dutch Bus" Music Video Raven-Symon turns up the heat a little. . . which reminds me: Why have a name with an "" if you don't pronounce it? She doesn't. It's just "RavinSmoan," thank you very much.
Bottom line: 5 College Road Trip has nothing to offend anyone, except its relative lack of originality - not even so much as a raised eyebrow could be worked up on behalf of its smutless situations. Indeed, there is no sex, nor a hint of it (though it seems to be one of two things that worry poor Chief Porter. There is no violence and no bad language. This is movie that's as homogenious as white bread – and just as unchallenging. Porter talks about "trust" but, except for what he has dancing around in his head and what we, the audience, bring to the movie, Melanie never offers so much as a hint of anything to be concerned about. And while this has the makings of a comedy of errors, it also makes its moral as empty as a Rubik's cube. That said, for its intended audience, College Road Trip is harmless family entertainment – the stuff that should make Wall-Mart a few extra bucks. For movie officiandos or those wanting to enlarge their high definition video library for just about any reason, I'd urge renting first. But don't get your hopes up.
