What is event ticket insurance and is it worth it?
Should you tack on the extra cost at checkout to protect your purchase.
I was once a dedicated purchaser of ticket insurance. I go to about a dozen concerts annually, and I liked the peace of mind that I thought ticket protection offered.
Last March, I planned a weekend trip to Nashville with my best friend, a trip that was to conclude with a concert at the Grand Ole Opry. But a work emergency thwarted the entire trip a week before we had planned to leave.
I called the Dolly-Parton-themed hotel and canceled our stay with no problem: it was fully refunded. I called American Airlines and canceled our flight with no problem: it was fully refunded (in future trip credit).
But when I tried to get a refund for my insured concert tickets, it wasn't as simple. I first had to upload my receipt as well as a signed letter from my employer explaining why I couldn't attend. Then, I had to wait several days to hear the claim decision, which was thankfully approved.
The hassle and the $20 spent on insurance were admittedly well worth the nearly $300 refund, but the experience taught me a valuable lesson: ticket insurance is not the catch-all I thought it was. Here's what you need to know about event ticket insurance before deciding if it's worth the expense.
What is ticket insurance?
Ticket insurance is a type of protection that might reimburse your ticket purchase if you can't attend an event for certain covered, unexpected reasons. Customers can purchase it as an add-on when they buy tickets to live events like sports games and concerts .
Getting insurance seems like a smart move when you consider that concert tickets can be extremely expensive. Even before fees get tacked on, tickets for Swift's Eras tour ran from around $50 to $900 at face value; tickets for Beyoncé's Renaissance tour ran from around $60 to around $1,000. Resale tickets are even more expensive, often double or triple face value.
Fans of big-name artists are dropping big bucks on high-dollar seats and VIP passes, and these investments make ticket insurance an attractive offer.
How do I purchase ticket insurance and how much does it cost?
Ticketmaster, the world's largest ticket seller, is owned by Live Nation and handles around 70% of all event tickets sold in the U.S.
At checkout for ticket purchases, Ticketmaster customers are offered Event Ticket Protector, an insurance service offered by Allianz Global Assistance, a consumer brand well-known for its travel insurance . Allianz Partners developed Event Ticket Protector in 2006 with Ticketmaster, and the company has been Ticketmaster's exclusive event ticket protection provider since.
Event Ticket Protector costs about 10% of the ticket price. Depending on the ticket price, 10% could range from a couple of bucks to more than a hundred dollars.
What's covered by ticket insurance? What's not covered?
An Allianz Global Assistance ticket insurance policy that I received in February 2023 includes 18 covered reasons for ticket cancellation. However, these reasons are qualified by 20 listed general exclusions.
The policy lists several exclusions that may raise some eyebrows, such as:
- "Terrorist events"
- "Fertility treatments or elective abortion"
- "Nuclear reaction, radiation, or radioactive contamination"
- "A mental health disorder"
- "An epidemic"
Further, the insurance doesn't protect ticket purchases in the case of "the event being canceled or delayed by the venue or promoter for any reason." In other words, if the event gets canceled your best hope of getting a refund is if the promoter or venue voluntarily issues refunds, rather than through any ticket insurance policy.
You can find a general explanation of Event Ticket Protector coverage here , though you should always check your certificate of insurance or policy for detailed explanations of coverage. "These are very technical documents," says Omar Ochoa, a Texas-based attorney who specializes in insurance. "You may see an advertisement that says something like you're protected in case you get sick. But 'sick' is not what you think it means in the general sense. It'll be very clearly defined in the terms."
Ochoa and Daniel Durazo, a director of communications at Allianz Partners, both agreed that no insurance products cover every situation. Auto insurance , home insurance and health insurance generally have a list of exclusions.
However, the costs of not having home insurance (for example) when you need it could be catastrophic, which is why you should pay for a policy even if it has more exclusions than you'd like. With ticket insurance, the stakes are lower and you may feel a policy that doesn't cover enough situations isn't worth the expense.
How do I file a claim on my ticket insurance?
When you purchase ticket insurance, you receive an email from the issuing company containing a link to the claim site. If you purchased Event Ticket Protector from Allianz Global Assistance, you could file a claim here .
According to Ochoa, customers will need solid documentation of their circumstances to receive coverage for most claims, so have doctor's notes or police reports or employer letters ready to go.
Where it's unclear how your policy applies to your situation, Ochoa said it's up to litigation to iron those out on a case-by-case basis. However, attorney's fees are expensive, and it hardly ever makes financial sense to pursue legal action on a rejected ticket insurance claim.
"The coverage is actually very narrow," said Ochoa. "And to enter a dispute, if you feel like you're being taken advantage of, it's just not financially feasible in most instances. So, it makes it really difficult to justify this type of purchase for a consumer, in my opinion."
Customers can appeal rejected claims to Allianz Global Assistance by emailing [email protected] and including their policy or claim number in the email.
Should I insure my ticket purchases?
If you're worried about unforeseen circumstances, then ticket insurance might be a smart investment for you. Still, you should very clearly understand the terms before purchasing any form of insurance.
Durazo said in an email statement that he always protects his personal ticket purchases with Allianz Global Assistance. According to him, even off the clock, he likes knowing that his investments are covered for unexpected cancellations and the 24/7 event assistance that the insurance comes with.
Allianz Global Assistance gives its customers a "free look" to review their policy, Durazo said. During this period, customers can cancel their policy for a full refund of their purchase price within 15 days of purchasing, as long as the event hasn't happened yet, and no claim has been initiated.
He also recommended that customers call Allianz Global Assistance with any questions regarding what's covered by their policy.
Ochoa, on the other hand, doesn't insure his ticket purchases. He said the additional cost is just not worth it.
"The coverage it actually provides is pretty narrow when you read and understand the terms," said Ochoa. "There's this longer section called Ticket Cancellation Coverage, and it purports to cover all these different reasons for why you will be protected in some covered event, but then you go to the general exclusions, and it starts to chip away at those."
If you bought expensive tickets and are willing to track down all of the documents you may need for your claim, then ticket insurance may make sense. Otherwise, the policy may not be a worthwhile investment.
Money matters — so make the most of it. Get expert tips, strategies, news and everything else you need to maximize your money, right to your inbox. Sign up here .
What are the alternatives to ticket insurance?
Ochoa recommended that customers check their other insurance policies to see if they have any areas of coverage that overlap with ticket insurance. For example, some travel insurance policies cover costs of an event that you couldn't attend because of travel-related complications.
If you're looking to save money on or get the most out of large events, many credit cards offer exclusive event benefits, like pre-sales to concerts and sports games.
Capital One offers several cards that are great options for those interested in early access to tickets, special on-site perks at specific venues and the ability to upgrade experiences at certain events using Capital One miles. The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card (see rates and fees ) is one of CNBC Select's favorite credit cards from the issuer:

Bottom line
It takes one click to protect your ticket purchase, but it usually requires specific circumstances and paperwork to reap the benefits of that protection. Don't expect to be covered for simply changing your mind about attending. Read the terms and understand the limits of your coverage before deciding if ticket insurance makes sense for your next event.

How to Avoid Sports and Concert Ticket Scams
Taylor swift fans are just the latest victims of criminals selling bogus tickets online.
Suburban Detroit resident Lisa Turner, 47, is a veteran concertgoer who’s been to more than 1,000 shows over the past few decades — somehow managing to find tickets to performances by wildly popular artists like Billy Joel, Elton John and the Rolling Stones. So when her teenage daughter was eager to see the hottest tour of the summer, Taylor Swift , Turner was sure she could score a few seats to one of the star’s two Detroit shows.
First she tried using her credit card’s presale access to tickets — usually a dependable method. But with so many Swifties also on the hunt, she had no luck, even after spending hours on the website. “It was so stressful,” she recalls.

Next, she talked to various people offering tickets on Facebook, but she wasn’t convinced they were legit, so she kept looking.
Finally, as the shows neared, Turner found a seller on Craigslist. When she talked to him on the phone, she says, “He sounded very trustworthy, and nice and personable. He didn’t give me any kind of weird vibes or anything.”
Kevin, as he called himself, even offered to send Turner a digital ticket in advance before she paid him, so she could check it out. Sure enough, she soon got a notification on her husband’s iPhone, and downloaded “a very realistic-looking ticket” into the Apple Wallet app — which Kevin claimed he needed to use because he got error messages when he used the Ticketmaster app, the usual method.
Satisfied, Turner sent the man a total of $1,200 on an online payment app for four tickets — for her daughter and three friends — for the Friday concert.
But then, on the day of the show, she suddenly started wondering if the deal had been too good to be true. After trying unsuccessfully to verify the tickets online, she finally drove to the stadium box office. That’s where she got the bad news. “Unfortunately, these are not real,” one of the workers there told her, while also noting that the fakes were “the best we have seen.”
Meanwhile, Kevin suddenly vanished, his phone number disconnected.
A growth in ticket scams
It’s the sort of misfortune that many fans of live events are experiencing these days. While comprehensive statistics are elusive, reports of ticket scams (sports, concerts and other events) to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) increased from 13,168 in 2020 to 17,941 in 2021 and then slipped just slightly to 16,762 in 2022, according to BBB spokesman Josh Planos. He notes that the reports probably represent only a fraction of the actual scams.
The scammers take advantage of the fact that paper tickets are being increasingly replaced by digital tickets, which are purchased online, downloaded into a phone app and then presented for scanning at the arena gate.

While digital ticketing makes it easier for fans, it’s also a convenience for criminals. Instead of having to print counterfeit tickets and peddle them on a dark street corner, the scammers can sit at home and post ads for nonexistent tickets on online marketplaces. And it’s relatively easy for scammers, using consumer-grade graphic design software, to create a fake digital ticket with convincing-looking graphics, says Teresa Murray, head of the Consumer Watchdog office for the U.S. PIRG Education Fund.
They also know that many fans aren’t yet familiar with the technology. If a person hasn’t bought tickets from an online site before, and a seller provides them with a QR code , they may not realize that “there’s really no way to test it until you’re at the gate,” Planos explains.

How do ticket scams work?
With stars such as Swift, Beyoncé and Aerosmith going on major tours this year, high demand for seats makes it tempting for people to look in unusual places for tickets and to suspend their suspicions. Those conditions create a perfect situation for scammers, experts say.
You see somebody supposedly selling tickets to this concert that’s sold out, "and your mind starts going in overdrive. You're like, 'Oh boy, I can buy tickets!’ ” explains Murray. “We’ve seen case after case of perfectly intelligent, normally skeptical people who fall for the scam because they get caught up in this euphoria.”
Anti-fraud experts say that ticket scammers often ply their trade on social media and online marketplaces such as Craigslist, which have become last-resort options for would-be concertgoers. But some brazen scammers even create entire fake ticket-selling websites of their own.
“There’s a certain portion of reports coming from folks who thought they were buying a ticket from Ticketmaster, because it was a site that looked like Ticketmaster,” Planos says. “But they didn’t double-check that URL, and it was a lookalike site.”
Once a ticket scammer convinces a person to purchase a concert ticket, they’ll usually ask the target to send money through a peer-to-peer payment app such as Zelle or Venmo rather than using a credit card, according to Steve Baker, a former Federal Trade Commission official who now publishes the Baker Fraud Newsletter.
That’s when the bad stuff starts to happen. The scammer may send a counterfeit replica of the ticket, or simply disappear without sending anything at all — “a straight theft kind of deal,” as Baker explains.
How to protect yourself from ticket scammers
Some experts recommend that music fans stick to getting their tickets from name-brand sellers such as Ticketmaster, or if they’re going to venture into the resale market, only do business with sellers who belong to the National Association of Ticket Brokers (NATB), an industry group that requires members to follow a code of ethics.
AARP NEWSLETTERS

“If you’re dealing with a NATB member, it’s guaranteed, and if they failed to deliver that ticket, it’s not just a refund, you get 200 percent,” explains Gary Adler, NATB’s executive director and counsel.
You can get a list of members at natb.org or at verifiedticketsource.com .
Here are some additional safety tips from Teresa Murray at U.S. PIRG.
- Always treat someone selling tickets to a hot concert or big sports event with skepticism, since these events are likely to be sellouts.
- If you do buy from an individual, it should be someone whom you know personally, such as a relative, close friend or coworker.
- Unless you know a seller personally, never pay for tickets with a peer-to-peer payment service such as Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, CashApp or a wire transfer. If the person turns out to be a scammer, you won’t be able to get your money back (these apps don’t have the same consumer protections that credit cards do). When you’re buying tickets, check a floor chart to make sure that the section and seat number actually exist.
- If you’re buying tickets from a name-brand site such as Ticketmaster or StubHub, make sure that the URL is the correct one, and not for a look-alike site created by a scammer.
In Michigan, Lisa Turner says that her ticket scam experience had an unexpectedly happy ending. After a local TV station aired a news story about the girls having to miss the Friday concert, she got a call from the company managing Swift’s tour, informing her that an anonymous benefactor was willing to give them four free tickets to the Saturday show.
What to do if you are a victim of a ticket scam
- File a local police report.
- Contact the Federal Trade Commission online at ReportFraud.ftc.gov , or by phone at 877-382-4357.
- Report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov .
Listen to this episode of AARP’s podcast The Perfect Scam to hear more on Lisa Turner’s experience with a Taylor Swift ticket scam.

Consumer Reports Supports TICKET Act for Transparent Ticket Pricing, Urges the Senate to Prioritize Consumer Protection
The TICKET Act would require “all-in pricing” for sales of tickets for concerts, sports events, and other live entertainment events
WASHINGTON, DC – Consumer Reports (CR) strongly endorses S.1303, the Transparency in Charges for Key Events Ticketing Act (“TICKET Act”), which calls for “all-in pricing” for concert, sports, and live entertainment event tickets. The TICKET Act will ensure upfront disclosure of the complete ticket cost, including all mandatory and unavoidable fees, equipping consumers with greater price transparency and information to make informed purchase decisions. CR has sent a letter of support to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation, which is scheduled to hold a mark-up of the bill on July 27, 2023.
“The current ticket marketplace lacks transparency, with sellers employing ‘drip pricing’ to hide additional fees that can inflate prices by up to 30 percent,” said Jonathan Schwantes, senior policy counsel at Consumer Reports. “The TICKET Act will combat this issue, creating fair ground rules for all sellers and enabling consumers to make head-to-head comparisons at the point of sale.”
Consumer Reports has received thousands of stories from frustrated consumers burdened by excessive ticket fees. These testimonials shared a common frustration with the purchase process, citing hidden fees significantly raising ticket prices beyond expectations, bait-and-switch tactics causing uncertainty about purchased tickets’ legitimacy, and the opaqueness of the secondary ticket market. Many more consumers have voiced similar complaints about hidden ticket fees to the FTC, state attorneys general, and other state and local consumer protection agencies.
“The TICKET Act’s “all-in pricing” requirement is urgently needed to provide essential consumer protections and promote a fair and transparent ticketing industry,” said Chuck Bell, advocacy program director at Consumer Reports. “The common-sense consumer protections provided through the TICKET Act are long overdue. Consumer Reports calls on Senators to cosponsor and vote ‘yes’ for this critically important consumer protection bill.”
Consumers often are not informed about fees until they have selected their tickets, sometimes only after entering their payment information. The late disclosure of fees right before purchase increases search costs for consumers and makes comparing-shop harder. It also creates opportunities for unfair and predatory competition by obscuring the actual price of tickets available for sale on competitive platforms.
The TICKET Act will provide an enormous step forward to ensure consumers can shop and compare ticket prices on a fair and transparent basis—as consumers routinely do for other products and services—and will ensure all market actors act appropriately.

Keep Your Concert Tickets Safe With These Expert-Approved Scam Spotting Tips
Don't let scammers ruin that Taylor Swift concert you bought tickets to. Here's how to outsmart them.
Ticket scams are no joke. No one wants to spend hundreds of dollars to see their favorite artist, only to get to the concert arena and realize the tickets they bought were fake.
The Better Business Bureau received 16,884 total complaints regarding event ticket sales -- that includes concerts and sporting events -- from January 2022 through February 2023.
The repercussions of a concert or game-day scam go beyond simply missing the event. If you pay for a phony ticket with your credit card, you could be compromising your personal information and putting yourself at risk of identity theft. "You're out your money, you're out your personal information, and now you can't go to the show," Melanie McGovern, director of PR and social media at BBB, said.
Luckily, there are ways to prevent scams from raining on your baseball game or Taylor Swift concert. McGovern walked me through the essential tips for spotting scams and what you should do if you bought a fraudulent ticket.
For more ticket advice, here's how you can buy concert tickets on TikTok .
Stop and think
Whenever a widely regarded artist comes to town or there's loads of hype over a sports game, fans race to snag the best seats for the event as quickly as they can. To take advantage of fan interest, fake websites for buying tickets or fake listings will pop up on secondary ticket sites to prey on the desperate customers.
"There's so much emotion involved in buying tickets for something that you love that people just don't think [when they're purchasing]," McGovern said. That leads them to throwing logic out the window and jumping at the first offer they see. The first thing you should do when buying tickets is stop and think logically about what and who you're buying from.
How to find legitimate concert or game tickets
When in doubt, always head to the official venue site for tickets. If you end up searching for tickets to a game in your city, McGovern recommends avoiding any sponsored ticket listings that pop up at the top of the page and, instead, scrolling until you find an official ticket broker or venue site. Sponsored ticket listings are more likely to be fraudulent, she says. Check the name of the website for any minor misspellings, too. Frauds can create lookalike sites with one or two misspellings to try and trick you into buying from them instead of official and secure websites.
What about tickets on the resale market?
Let's say the tickets on the venue's website are all sold out and you resort to the resale market. There are still a few ways to avoid getting duped by scams.
To see if the ticket broker is legitimate, look up the seller on the Better Business Bureau's website and the National Association of Ticket Brokers member directory . Ticket sellers should have a customer protection policy, be registered with the NATB or both, the BBB said . If your seller isn't, consider it a red flag and find somebody else.
While perusing ticket options on secondary sites, have the seating chart of the venue open in another window, McGovern recommended. The "biggest telltale sign" you're getting scammed is if the seats you are being sold don't match up with the venue's seats and rows, McGovern said.
How to make sure the tickets you bought aren't fake
Many venues primarily use digital tickets now, which can make it easier to get scammed with counterfeit ticket PDFs. To ensure that the tickets are real if you bought them from someone else, it doesn't hurt to visit the venue a few days before the concert to ensure to check. Also check the format in which the venue accepts and scans tickets. If someone sold you a paper copy of a ticket but the venue exclusively accepts digital tickets, you just got scammed.
Immediate concert and game-day ticket red flags
If the deal is too good to be true, most of the time it likely is. If someone is selling Beyoncé Renaissance tickets for half the retail price or Super Bowl tickets for $100, that's cause for concern. If someone is using a sob story to advertise their tickets, it may be a scam as well. McGovern said that online scams all "have the same MO of tugging at your heartstrings and getting you to act quickly without thinking."
How can I protect myself?
Beyond all the aforementioned tips and red flags to look out for, McGovern recommends always buying tickets with a credit card, instead of less secure forms of payment (like peer-to-peer payment apps). "If you're buying a ticket from a person online and they're asking you for a peer-to-peer payment app, there's a good chance you're not gonna get that money back," she said.
For more, here are the best credit cards right now and the best TVs .
I just got scammed. What should I do?
File a complaint using the BBB's reporting tool . If your complaint is in line with the BBB's complaint acceptance criteria, your complaint will be sent to the business that scammed you within 14 days. This may not work for all scams.

I struggled to make payment because my bank thought I was being hacked but I eventually sorted that out and got the tickets I wanted. It was an easy thing to do following all the instructions on screen.

Too expensive tickets for listening to the songs that are not familiar to the children and even adults, except Frozen and Little Marmaid. I paid nearly 50 pounds for two adults and two children, which is too expensive for a very light entertainment.

Easy way to book tickets but let’s see as I haven’t been to the gig yet but being asked to review the service!!
Seat Choice Issue
I expected to choose my particular seat, but the system would not permit it. I attempted to see what would happen if I changed the number of tickets, and up popped seats I would have chosen, as they were available, but never released for a single booking. I tried numerous times to select the seat I wanted, but it was not possible. I finally had to accept a seat that was chosen at random for me. Very disappointing, especially considering the high cost of the ticket.
Reply from Gigs and Tours
Hi, thank you for your feedback. We have a designated seating map on the left hand side of the booking page, which is also on the next stage/page of booking once tickets are in your basket. For reassurance, our site allocates the best available seats from the criteria you choose/what is there when you try to book. I hope you have a great time at the gig either way. Thanks ^P
Always managed to get tickets!
Considering that I couldn't get AC/DC tickets when they first came on sale but then, I got some when they let me know they released more tickets, I'm delighted. Bearing in mind, it was the first time I couldn't get tickets! I even got tickets for the Hawkins tribute. So, I'm delighted with Gigs and Tours!

Stress free booking.
The booking form was easy no issues Tickets being sent out in the post 7 days before concert.
Insurance is worthless
Insurance is worthless. I can't attend (booking error), but unless it's a life or death scenario, the insurance doesn't offer refunds. Surely the whole point of buying insurance is the ability to get a refund if you can't attend? Money wasted and trapped.

Hi, sorry to hear you're not happy with the ticket plan protection. The terms of cover are available at the point of the optional add on when you check out. If you are not eligible to claim, you can list tickets for resale through ethical site Twickets, further info can be found when you log in here https://gigst.rs/customerservice and click on 'sell these tickets'. Thanks ^P

Lloyds Bank is aiming to help Taylor Swift fans in the UK avoid a cruel summer. The bank has issued an “urgent warning” over ticket scams for the upcoming UK leg of the superstar’s Eras Tour, finding that Swifties are being “targeted by a wave of concert ticket scams flooding social media.”

Josh charles reflects on the fun of his cameo in taylor swift's 'fortnight' video.
The institution further estimates that industry-wide across the UK there are likely to have been at least 3,000 victims since tickets went on sale, with over £1 million ($1.25 million) lost to fraudsters so far.
More than 90% of reported cases start with fake ads or posts on Facebook, which includes Facebook Marketplace, according to Lloyds, with dozens of unofficial groups set up specifically for people looking to buy and sell tickets for Taylor Swift concerts.
Lloyds warned, “With all UK dates now sold out, many more fans are likely to fall victim to ticket scams in the coming weeks and months, both leading up to the tour and once the concerts begin in June.”
In its research, Lloyds found that the number of reported scam cases relating to concert tickets more than doubled last summer compared to the same period a year earlier (up by 158%). Among the other major artists most commonly targeted last summer were Coldplay, Harry Styles and Beyonce.
Liz Ziegler, Fraud Prevention Director, Lloyds Bank, said, “For her legion of dedicated Swifties, the excitement is building ahead of Taylor’s Eras Tour finally touching down in the UK this summer. However, cruel fraudsters have wasted no time in targeting her most loyal fans as they rush to pick up tickets for her must-see concerts. It’s easy to let our emotions get the better of us when we find out our favorite artist is going to be performing live, but it’s important not to let those feelings cloud our judgement when trying to get hold of tickets.”
Ziegler suggested, “Buying directly from reputable, authorized platforms is the only way to guarantee you’re paying for a genuine ticket. Even then, always pay by debit or credit card for the greatest protection. If you’re being asked to pay by bank transfer, particularly from a seller you’ve found on social media, that should immediately set alarm bells ringing.”

From Taylor Swift to Coldplay: how to avoid festival and gig ticket scams
Offers on Twitter and Facebook may be tempting – but experts warn over the risks of fraud
W ith many popular events selling out in double-quick time, trying to get your hands on a ticket when they first go on sale can be a stressful and frustrating business (hello Glastonbury, Beyoncé and, no doubt, Taylor Swift, whose ticket presale for her 2024 UK dates kicks off on Monday).
Also, not all of us can commit to organising our diary six months or a year in advance.
All is not necessarily lost if you are not successful. However, it pays to be cautious when trying to bag a last-minute ticket for a hot event.
Fortunately, there will always be people who need to sell their tickets nearer the time. But, while using official sales channels won’t leave you out of pocket, the world of ticket resale on social media requires exercising a huge amount of caution, warns Mike Andrews, a coordinator for the National Trading Standards eCrime team. “There’s been a shift in the last few years towards fraudsters targeting people on social media, which has reflected consumer behaviour of more people turning to social media to find tickets,” he says.
In fact, concert ticket scams soared by 529% between March 2022 and February this year, with those defrauded losing an average of £110, according to research by Lloyds Bank .
Scour genuine resale sites
If you are desperate for a ticket but the event is sold out, websites such as Ticketmaster list resale tickets (typically offered by people unable to attend) for many events, and Twickets is arguably the leading resale marketplace. “They offer greater protection if anything was to go wrong,” Andrews says.
Other resale sites include TicketSwap, while the ticket app Dice allows fans to join a waiting list for sold-out gigs.
Too good to be true?
Many people will jump on to social media to scout out tickets for a gig – and there are plenty of genuine sellers using platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. However, there are ways to stop yourself falling for increasingly sophisticated scams.
“If it’s too good to be true, it probably is,” Liz Stanton at Get Safe Online, an internet safety website, says. Although she quickly adds that scammers are becoming increasingly savvy.
“They’re more switched on and will drop the price down to a level that doesn’t sound ridiculously obvious that it’s a scam. For example, if Glastonbury tickets are originally £350, they might drop to £320 as they know that putting it at £50 is just having a laugh.”
Check the person’s profile
This is where some of the most obvious warning signs are if you are buying via social media.
“A red flag would be that they have few friends or followers on the platform,” Andrews says.
Scroll through their profile and look at the activity. “If someone has recently set up a profile and put on a week’s worth of pictures, that should raise concerns,” he adds. Sometimes you will spot fake profiles as they will set their location abroad, which might give off a whiff of suspicion. On Twitter, many scammers use random usernames that don’t correlate with their name, and add in emojis and kisses to their username to make them look more approachable. Also, scammers can stick out on Twitter as they often retweet furiously in the days leading up to selling a ticket for a big event – look at their posts and replies to see if there’s any actual engagement with friends or followers.
Also, watch out for people who say “DM me” in their original post and turn off comments. The purpose of this is that they are trying to have multiple conversations with potential victims in their private messages rather than look like the ticket had been bought.
Use ‘reverse image’
“Criminals will ‘scrape’ pictures of tickets online and use the information in the image to add to their own posts,” Andrews says.
However, he adds, there are ways to check if it is legitimate. “You can do a ‘reverse image’ search to see if there are copies of the image on other websites. (For more information on how this works, check out articles such as this .) If you spot others, that would suggest it’s highly suspicious.”
And a word of warning from the experts: to help crack down on this problem, don’t post an image of your own ticket online. Also, you can apply the same approach with the seller’s profile pictures.
“Most scammers use someone else’s pictures, which a reverse image search can sometimes pick up,” Stanton says.
Pay by credit card
Many fraudsters push buyers into paying for tickets via a direct bank transfer, and will come up with all sorts of excuses to get you to do this. “If you use a money transfer service or direct bank transfer, you’re not protected and may not be refunded,” Andrews says.
Whenever you are buying tickets online, make the purchase with a credit card, he adds. “If you can demonstrate to your credit card issuer that you have been defrauded, it should refund you.”
To qualify for protection under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, you have to spend between £100 and £30,000 on your card.
Scammers will sometimes encourage people to pay using PayPal’s friends and family option. However, this doesn’t offer you any protection, as PayPal doesn’t provide refunds for payments made this way.
If you want to use PayPal, only do this via its goods and services option – which will often result in scammers running a mile. This offers protection and provides refunds. Also, you can often spot a scammer when they provide PayPal or bank details, as this will often reveal a different name to the one they are using online.
If you are scammed
Try to take pictures of the conversations as evidence for your refund request. “As soon as the transaction goes through, they will usually block you and delete the conversation; that’s why we say to always screenshot,” Stanton says.
Report and block the fraudsters on the social media platform and report them to Action Fraud, the national fraud reporting centre. Contact your bank as soon as possible to try to stop the transaction and see if you can claim a refund if it has gone though.
