Launch of new agency shows confidence in future of travel

coop travel to jersey

Duncan Ashley and Julie Law both worked for the company for several years before it closed its doors in January 2021. The pair decided to set up their own travel venture, which will offer continuity for customers who had preciously booked with Travelmaker.

The new company is linked with Midcounties Co-operative Travel as a consortia member but will trade under its own name. The Channel Islands Co-operative Society has supported Travel by Design in setting up the business and ensuring the shop, located at 22 Colomberie, is ready to open.

Ms Law, who has over 20 years in the travel industry, said: ‘Duncan and I are really looking forward to running our own business. We can continue to provide a service to our loyal customers and offer new clients that personal contact and advice to help make their dream holiday a reality. Our belief is that it is important to maintain a presence on the high street where customers can be welcomed through the doors and chat through their holiday aspirations face to face.

‘We will remain a point of contact for Travelmaker customers who have been booking with us for many years. Through our membership with Co-operative Travel and along with the strong links we have built with travel providers and tour operators, we are relishing the next chapter.’

Mr Ashley, who had previous experience managing Lunn Poly and Thomson before working at Travelmaker, said that it had been a challenging year for the industry.

‘In these challenging times opening a travel agency might at first appear risky. However, we are confident that travel will recover and there will be a pent-up demand for holidays from consumers wanting to make up for lost time.

‘We are grateful for the support provided by the Co-op in setting up Travel by Design, as this has given us the confidence to continue with our passion for travel and take our own business forward. We look forward to welcoming new and familiar faces.’

Mark Cox, chief executive officer of the Channel Islands Co-operative Society, added: ‘We are delighted that Duncan and Julie have been able to launch Travel by Design and wish them every success. It was an incredibly hard decision for the Co-op to close Travelmaker, as it was a much-loved local business. Duncan and Julie have been valued colleagues for many years, so offering them support and guidance throughout the process of registering and launching Travel by Design was a real pleasure.’

More than 100 existing Travelmaker bookings have been transferred across to Travel by Design, where they will continue to have full ABTA protection.

A.I.-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material May Overwhelm Tip Line

A report by Stanford researchers cautions that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children doesn’t have the resources to help fight the new epidemic.

People stand beside TV cameras aimed at a lectern with a sign that says, “Protect kids from Big Tech.”

By Cecilia Kang

Cecilia Kang reports on internet and A.I. policy from Washington.

A new flood of child sexual abuse material created by artificial intelligence is threatening to overwhelm the authorities already held back by antiquated technology and laws, according to a new report released Monday by Stanford University’s Internet Observatory.

Over the past year, new A.I. technologies have made it easier for criminals to create explicit images of children. Now, Stanford researchers are cautioning that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, a nonprofit that acts as a central coordinating agency and receives a majority of its funding from the federal government, doesn’t have the resources to fight the rising threat.

The organization’s CyberTipline, created in 1998, is the federal clearinghouse for all reports on child sexual abuse material, or CSAM, online and is used by law enforcement to investigate crimes. But many of the tips received are incomplete or riddled with inaccuracies. Its small staff has also struggled to keep up with the volume.

“Almost certainly in the years to come, the CyberTipline will be flooded with highly realistic-looking A.I. content, which is going to make it even harder for law enforcement to identify real children who need to be rescued,” said Shelby Grossman, one of the report’s authors.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is on the front lines of a new battle against sexually exploitative images created with A.I., an emerging area of crime still being delineated by lawmakers and law enforcement. Already, amid an epidemic of deepfake A.I.-generated nudes circulating in schools, some lawmakers are taking action to ensure such content is deemed illegal.

A.I.-generated images of CSAM are illegal if they contain real children or if images of actual children are used to train data, researchers say. But synthetically made ones that do not contain real images could be protected as free speech, according to one of the report’s authors.

Public outrage over the proliferation of online sexual abuse images of children exploded in a recent hearing with the chief executives of Meta, Snap, TikTok, Discord and X , who were excoriated by the lawmakers for not doing enough to protect young children online.

The center for missing and exploited children, which fields tips from individuals and companies like Facebook and Google, has argued for legislation to increase its funding and to give it access to more technology. Stanford researchers said the organization provided access to interviews of employees and its systems for the report to show the vulnerabilities of systems that need updating.

“Over the years, the complexity of reports and the severity of the crimes against children continue to evolve,” the organization said in a statement. “Therefore, leveraging emerging technological solutions into the entire CyberTipline process leads to more children being safeguarded and offenders being held accountable.”

The Stanford researchers found that the organization needed to change the way its tip line worked to ensure that law enforcement could determine which reports involved A.I.-generated content, as well as ensure that companies reporting potential abuse material on their platforms fill out the forms completely.

Fewer than half of all reports made to the CyberTipline were “actionable” in 2022 either because companies reporting the abuse failed to provide sufficient information or because the image in a tip had spread rapidly online and was reported too many times. The tip line has an option to check if the content in the tip is a potential meme, but many don’t use it.

On a single day earlier this year, a record one million reports of child sexual abuse material flooded the federal clearinghouse. For weeks, investigators worked to respond to the unusual spike. It turned out many of the reports were related to an image in a meme that people were sharing across platforms to express outrage, not malicious intent. But it still ate up significant investigative resources.

That trend will worsen as A.I.-generated content accelerates, said Alex Stamos, one of the authors on the Stanford report.

“One million identical images is hard enough, one million separate images created by A.I. would break them,” Mr. Stamos said.

The center for missing and exploited children and its contractors are restricted from using cloud computing providers and are required to store images locally in computers. That requirement makes it difficult to build and use the specialized hardware used to create and train A.I. models for their investigations, the researchers found.

The organization doesn’t typically have the technology needed to broadly use facial recognition software to identify victims and offenders. Much of the processing of reports is still manual.

Ask Amy: Should we take a flight with our 1-year-old or miss a family function to avoid the travel headache?

DEAR AMY: My sister will earn her Ph.D. out-of-state this summer.

My wife and I have a one-year-old and a three-year-old.

Bringing the whole family would be too much for the one-year-old to handle.

I’d like to bring our older child, who is close with the graduating aunt.

My wife doesn’t support the older child going with me because she wants to be there for that child’s first airplane flight.

She acknowledges that this is a selfish desire.

Should we go as a family, despite the headaches that will come from flying with a baby, or should I go solo?

– Harried Husband

DEAR HARRIED: I have to admit that as someone who has flown – a lot – with my daughter when she was a baby and a toddler, and subsequently with many other children of varying ages, I don’t see flying with a three-year-old as being the important and unmissable milestone your wife seems to perceive it to be.

(I still have flashbacks of running from one end of the Dallas airport to the other with my daughter, repeatedly dropping our carry-on luggage and assorted backpacks as we went.)

If the trip to your sister’s graduation is a direct flight of three hours or less, I would take the whole gang. If the trip requires a complicated connection, I would suggest you go solo.

Pressure on Murphy, NJSEA to share details on FIFA World Cup costs, transportation grows

4-minute read.

coop travel to jersey

As FIFA walks back the requirement for free public transportation for the World Cup, calls are growing for Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration to share details about the agreements and investments New Jersey agreed to in order to host World Cup soccer matches in 2026.

Among the outstanding questions is what Garden State taxpayers are projected to pay to host eight matches, including the final.

State Sen. Michael Testa, a Republican on the state Senate budget committee, said it “never hurt to be more transparent.”

Sen. Paul Sarlo, a Democrat who chairs the budget committee and represents the Meadowlands region, echoed Testa and said these issues will be among the topics discussed during budget hearings with the state Treasury Department in May.

Although the tournament is still more than two years away, New Jersey and New York City began the bidding process with FIFA in 2017. The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority partnered with city officials to sign a contract to pursue the bid with FIFA in 2018. An addendum was signed in 2022, but the particulars of those documents were only recently made public.

Free public transportation to World Cup matches?

The NJSEA and New York City both signed on the dotted line to require free public transportation to matches and fan events in that 2018 contract, a provision that came as a shock when it was publicly disclosed last week given a recent budget decision that will increase NJ Transit fares 21% before the World Cup final.

FIFA, the multibillion-dollar international soccer organization that oversees the tournament, appears to be walking back the free public transport requirement, officials said.

"FIFA can confirm that the hosting requirements across all host cities for the FIFA World Cup 26 have been updated as follows: All Match Ticket holders and accredited individuals shall be able to access transport (public or additionally planned transport) at cost on matchdays to allow travel to Stadiums on match days. This change has been communicated to all host cities," a spokesperson for the organization said in an emailed statement Thursday.

Statements from the host committee, Murphy spokesperson Natalie Hamilton and NJSEA spokesperson Brian Aberback were identical, and they said, "Since the original contract was drafted in 2017, FIFA has advised the host committee that providing free public transit is no longer a requirement of the host cities" and that there are "no plans to provide free public transportation."

Beyond the emailed statement from FIFA, nothing has been produced in writing to show if there is a change to the language in the legally binding agreements.

Alex Ambrose of New Jersey Policy Perspective noted the provision shows the state and FIFA recognize that “one of the best ways to get people out of cars and onto safer, cleaner modes of transportation like transit is to get more affordable and more accessible.”

“We do need as many people as possible using transit, but we need that 100% of the time, not just for big events like this,” Ambrose said.

Earlier: Free transit? No tax collection? We got NJ contract to host World Cup. Here's what it says

Testa hasn’t looked at the contract yet, but the idea of free public transportation was something that concerned him.

“Public transportation is so severely lacking in South Jersey. I have a real problem with public transportation being free for a sporting event when we should be focusing on … utilizing public transportation to move people in more rural counties,” he said.

He noted NJ Transit is “operating at about a billion-dollar deficit ” and thinks the focus should be expanding its operations into South Jersey where transportation is needed to “move bodies to where the jobs are.”

Questions remain on state's agreements with NYC, FIFA

Murphy has been a staunch advocate for hosting the global spectacle in East Rutherford. The eight matches set to take place at MetLife Stadium will span a weekslong period in June and July of 2026, after he leaves office.

June 2026 will be the end of Murphy's final budget, and July 2026 will mark the start of his successor’s first. Ambrose pointed out the change in leadership is among the reasons transparency is so important.

“We keep hearing about all these huge economic benefits, that this will be great for New Jersey, but if that's true, then it shouldn't hurt the state at all to be more transparent about these costs,” she said.

Ambrose also noted FIFA and the administration are touting the job creation the tournament will bring but the “reality is that those jobs are also short-term jobs.” And while the state is dedicating time, resources and money to the improvements necessary for FIFA, she said, “we still don't know if we, as New Jersey residents, are going to see any of those benefits."

The Murphy administration has said there are currently no tax breaks for the international organization , but ultimately the decision to provide such relief would be in the hands of the Legislature anyway.

Testa expressed concerns about the economic boon that the tournament is supposed to bring.

“I've looked into how cities that host the Olympics have turned out and fared after they hosted the Olympics, and it seems to me that it's not the economic boom that it's supposed to be for those municipalities,” he said. Testa did say other cities have had to build whole stadiums to support hosting bids, which is not the case here.

Ambrose said FIFA and other big corporations stand to benefit from this event as opposed to “New Jersey residents, most of whom won't even be able to afford a ticket to the game,” and that if the state is going to invest more in public safety, transportation and infrastructure, “we should be able to make those improvements 100% of the time, not just because we have one big event that's coming.”

There is still no projected or estimated cost for the tournament, either. The host committee, Hamilton and Aberback all said the "vast majority of costs associated with the FIFA World Cup will be paid for through private and corporate sources through fundraising managed by the host committee" and the state "will pay for specific public services during the FIFA World Cup." Examples of what could be funded by public dollars, according to the host committee, Hamilton and Aberback, include security, waste management, city beautification and stadium renovations.

The state will also be on the hook for the work done by NJ Transit to improve accessibility via public transportation to the stadium. The design stage alone for those projects is projected to cost more than $35 million. And while New Jersey is sharing hosting duties with New York City for the matches to be played at MetLife, there is still no contract with the city to split the costs — though New Jersey officials have said such an agreement is a work in progress.

Shocked passengers watch liquid leak down airplane aisle from bathroom on flight: Video

Passengers on board a Spirit Airline flight headed to New Jersey witnessed an unexpected and strange sight midair when they watched a mystery liquid flow down the aisle, seeping from one of the plane's lavatories.

Video shows some passengers sitting in the aisle of the plane gawking at the fluid during this week's flight, while others laugh, some recording footage of the unexpected situation from their phones.

According to a Spirit Airline spokesperson, the incident took place Monday on Spirit Airlines flight 1595.

The plane departed just after 3 p.m. on Monday from Atlanta Hartfield Jackson International Airport and landed at Newark Liberty International Airport at 5:18 p.m. according to the online site Flight Aware, which tracks flight paths.

Cockpit no-no: FAA launches investigation after MLB coach posts video from cockpit during flight

What caused the liquid to spill?

A maintenance team met the flight upon arrival in Newark due "to an issue with a potable water line connected to a sink in the rear lavatory," a Spirit Airlines spokesperson said in an email to USA TODAY.

The issue was addressed and the aircraft was cleared to continue with its next flight, the spokesperson said.
